- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So today I would like to talk to you about future pacing.
- 0:37So you might be saying, well, what is future pacing really?
- 0:41This is something that human beings have become addicted to.
- 0:45We are constantly living out in the future.
- 0:50We are rarely staying in the moment, which is, you know,
- 0:55beautiful and tragic all at the same time because we can go out
- 1:01and we can think about the future.
- 1:02We can go off and we can think about, you know, what I'm going
- 1:06to be doing next, what I'm going to be doing next.
- 1:08Where am I going to be going? What are my goals?
- 1:11You know, it's we are so driven to ask questions that are future
- 1:15paced questions, moving us somewhere where we are currently
- 1:19not The challenge with that though is it robs us of the
- 1:23experience of being in the moment.
- 1:25It robs us of of being where we currently are.
- 1:30And because it does that, it leaves us in a very precarious
- 1:36place because we've become addicted to what we call future
- 1:40pacing. We become addicted to thinking
- 1:42about what's next. And we don't ever enjoy where we
- 1:45are. And unfortunately it's something
- 1:48that, you know, we don't recognize.
- 1:51And when we don't recognize something, we can't fix it.
- 1:55So we just become very accustomed to constantly
- 1:58thinking about that, that part of it, constantly thinking
- 2:02about, you know, the future and not what's happening in the
- 2:07moment because the moment might be boring or the moment might
- 2:10seem that we can't get control of it or we don't like the
- 2:15moment. More often than not, we just
- 2:16don't like the moments we are currently in.
- 2:18Therefore we want to get out of them as quickly as possible.
- 2:21So it's easy to go future pace, imagination moving into another
- 2:26place. It is necessary, I want to be
- 2:30very clear about this. It's necessary to be able to
- 2:33have the ability to future pace and think about what you want.
- 2:38Where it becomes toxic is when it becomes the only place we
- 2:42want to go and we're never enjoying where we are.
- 2:45So I'm going to give you an example.
- 2:47So I coach quite a few business people and when they are working
- 2:55on something and they are focused on whatever their plan
- 3:01is for the year or they're focused on growing their
- 3:04business or their deals, let's say they have a big deal that's
- 3:08coming through and there's a process in most of this.
- 3:12It doesn't all happen instantaneously.
- 3:14It's like it, it's layered. So you have step one, Step 2,
- 3:17whatever the business is, it doesn't matter.
- 3:19There's many steps to the final of it all taking place.
- 3:23And often when they'll have something closed, they'll have a
- 3:27very big thing. I'll say to them, OK, did you
- 3:30celebrate your win? And they will say, well, I mean,
- 3:36not really. It took so long to get here.
- 3:38I kind of was already on to the next thing.
- 3:40I was already thinking about the next deal.
- 3:42So the challenge you have with that is when you don't celebrate
- 3:48each step, when you don't acknowledge each step in the
- 3:52process, you become that future pacer, that one that's always on
- 4:00to something next. And you don't go into a state of
- 4:04gratitude for the steps along the way.
- 4:07It's very hard to manifest more things because you're not even
- 4:13grateful for the one that you just had.
- 4:15All you're doing is focusing on what's next and you're not being
- 4:20grateful for what has already happened.
- 4:22We're so like quick to move through it that we don't pause
- 4:28and we don't put ourselves into a place of being in the moment.
- 4:32You know, one of my favorite mentors, John Kabat Zinn, so his
- 4:37name is spelled Jon and Kabat KABAT and then Zinn Zinn.
- 4:42He teaches mindfulness. And I learned so much from his
- 4:47processes about being in the moment and pausing and saying,
- 4:52OK, let me bring myself back down.
- 4:55This moment, this place, This is why one of the reasons that I
- 4:59record from the chicken coop, because when I'm out here with
- 5:03them, they they're not thinking about what's next.
- 5:05They're just enjoying what is. They're not worried about when
- 5:08she's going to bring us another snack.
- 5:09They're not worried about what's going to happen.
- 5:11They're just having a fine time doing whatever they're doing and
- 5:16they don't stress out about those things.
- 5:18They're just chilling, having a good time.
- 5:20Like what you're hearing right now is lots of chickens in a
- 5:22dust bath having a great time burying themselves in dirt.
- 5:27You know, totally the morning here and they don't think about
- 5:32the other stuff. So I'm going to challenge you to
- 5:35start thinking about how much do I future pace?
- 5:38How much am I constantly somewhere else?
- 5:41I am. Have I fallen into the
- 5:43intoxication of being out in the future so much that I'm
- 5:46sacrificing my present? Because this is a big deal for
- 5:52being able to move yourself forward.
- 5:54So track it and then pause and start coming back to the moment
- 5:58and being like, Oh no, I've got to be in this moment right now
- 6:01and be grateful for I got to stop future pacing as much as I
- 6:04can or have been, and I've got to use it as a tool.
- 6:10OK, I will talk to you all soon.
