Transcript
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: You're listening to the Adventure Sports podcast.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for adventuring with us, as we discover what incredible athletes and outdoor enthusiasts are doing all over the world.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Now here's your host, Kurt Linville.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: Hello friends, welcome to the Adventure Sports Podcast.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: I am speaking to you from the past.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: Again, today, today is Wednesday, January the 14th, and I'm not here.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm in Tanzania, and today is the day when all of our crew is meeting somewhere near the steps of Kilimanjaro, and tomorrow will be the first day that we actually begin ascending the tallest mountain in Africa.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: So, first of all, this episode is actually going to be guest hosted by the Fine Gentleman from Backpacking and Blisters that's Carl Mandereoli in Derek Summerville.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: Now, what I like best about Derek thus far is that the last syllable of his last name and the last syllable of my last name match up.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know what that means if there's any significance at all.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: His name is Summerville, but they misspelled it, so I don't even know what that means.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: My name is Lynville, and I like to joke that the Lyn actually means language.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: And that's just because I like to talk, I like to write, I like to do all those things, but that's really a transliteration, so you've got me introducing the other Ville, and Carl Mandrioli.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: I met Carl years ago without door retailer and we've kind of been acquaintances and checked in with each other for a long, long time now.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I am very thankful to Carl and Derek for stepping in while I am on the Kilimanjaro expedition and bringing you some fresh content.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: Now, they're going to try really hard to sell you on the idea of never listening to the Adventure Sports podcast again, and only listening to backpacking and blisters.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: I know they will, I'm not even here to defend myself, so I'm just telling you to advance when they do that.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it might be a good idea.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: You never really know, but we put out more content than they do, so at least listen to us when they don't have a show live.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: And we really appreciate you for listening to the Adventure Sports podcast.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: Carl and Derek, great guys.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that before I handed this over to them, I would give you a couple of discoveries, might be the way to say this, about preparing for expedition travel.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I have done a lot of adventures.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: I have done travel in lots of places around the world.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: This is the first trip where I'm traveling to a remote place and everything that I might need while I'm gone.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: I have to make sure I take with me because when we're on Mount Kilimanjaro, then we're not going to have access to go get the toothbrush that we forgot.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: I used that example with my son when I was explaining to him how packing actually is a more of a challenge than I expected and he says daddy's already done that when you're in Kenya.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: Remember, sure enough, I lost my toothbrush in Kenya.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: And my dear Kenyan friend, Joseph Kamani, was driving us and all the sudden he pulls over to the side of the road and he stops.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: I look at him, I'm like, what's going on?
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: Where are we stopping?
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: And he points at a thorn bush out in the field and he says toothbrush.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: I said, what?
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: It was, yeah, yeah, toothbrush, that thorn bush, toothbrush.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so I went out there to this thorn bush.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: I still don't know what it was.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I cut off a twig and if you chew the end of this twig, it makes bristles just like a toothbrush, not only that.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: but the sap inside of it was really kind of freshening to your mouth, although it wasn't mint, definitely not mint, but I used that stick toothbrush for, oh, I don't know, maybe even weeks.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: And then I found my toothbrush buried somewhere in the bottom of my pack, but I kind of like this stick better.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, all of that to say, this has been quite the experience just packing for this trip.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: and all the people that I have interviewed over the years about expedition travel, I never brought that up, never thought of it, never realized it, it takes a lot more effort and careful planning to pack to a specific weight limit when you're going overseas and you're going somewhere far away from all the services and I'll be really transparent here.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: I have been overthinking this.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: I really have been overthinking this, it has been a long time since I've done a expedition style trip and I am so excited and just a couple of updates, I'm going to put together some episodes while we are climbing the mountain so that I can present those when we get back, it'll be about climbing, Africa's tallest peak, what it's really like to interact with the culture, the people, the weather, the
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: The vegetation, I mean, everything that you might want to know about Kilimanjaro.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to try to encapsulate that down into episode length so that you can experience it with us.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm also going to take a lot of video while I'm there and I'll post it somewhere.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want to see the video, I'll let you know about that as well.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we are doing this trip.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: 15 guys are climbing Kilimanjaro to raise money for we see hope and I've mentioned that several times.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not stopping contributing to we see hope just because the climb is past.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: Our goal was $20,000.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: We're not there yet.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: I want to keep going.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to pasture you guys for money.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: I want you to know that in advance.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to pasture you for money.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: But the $20,000 remains a goal for the Adventure Sports podcast.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I've been thinking, what's the best way to continue to move toward that goal over time without pestering you the audience?
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: And here, I'm going to ask you because I
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: don't know what the best way to do it is.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's something I want to be very, very careful with.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: I want to be sensitive not to where you out and bug you about giving to save children in Africa.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we've heard that mean so many times, but this is for real.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: We see hope rescue's homeless children orphans, orphaned often by parents who died of AIDS, living on the streets.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they're just impoverished but regardless, they get food, they get clothing, they get shelter, they get education, they get entrepreneurial skills, they get a crack at having a successful life and like I said once before, I believe this will be generational.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: If you save a kid,
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: Then that kid has a more successful existence.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: That means that his or her children has a much better chance at thriving in life.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_01]: And this could go on generation to generation to generation.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: So you help one kid now.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: You might be helping hundreds.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: later down the you know down the road.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's just such a beautiful opportunity.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: So the Adventure Sports podcast is going to continue supporting We See Hope.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: And we want to reach the $20,000 goal.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: The question I have is, and I want you to answer this email us at info at adventuresportspodcast.com.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: Put ideas in the comments.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: do that, but I did in the comments.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: Or join our Discord server.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: And we can just have a chat back and forth and brainstorm.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever, I'm looking for ideas the best way for the adventure sports podcast to raise more money for or we see hope for the kids in Africa without bugging you about it all the time.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: One thought that I had is people could join our Patreon and they could earmark the money that they give to Patreon and we'll just pass it straight on to we see hope or maybe if you come to Patreon and you give to the Adventure Sports podcast, we'll automatically give a percentage of that to we see hope just because it's our mission to help we see hope as well as to help
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: everyone that hears about the adventure sports podcast to get out and to be outdoors connect with nature, get healthy, have fun, build community, build richer, better families, all that kind of stuff.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: So our mission includes helping people and that means these kids in Africa too.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, I'm looking for your ideas.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: Please show notes, discord, info at adventure sportspodcast.com, Patreon, you can reach us in so many different ways.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm going to be even more transparent.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: I started packing for this trip a couple of weeks ago because I wanted to be ahead of the game.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: It is now Saturday.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: I leave tomorrow.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: I haven't yet gotten everything in a suitcase.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: it's not even done yet.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: And it's been a very strange dynamic.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to confess, you know, I don't really know what to expect.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: And the people we're climbing with the guiding service has provided us with a great list of a checklist of things to bring.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: But I keep thinking about all the what ifs.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: And what's really funny about that is I've been adapting to challenging situations in the wilderness my whole life going into the woods with far less than maybe I needed but being just fine.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: But for some reason this one is kind of creating an itch that I'm not sure that I know how to scratch.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's very, very strange, but that's what I've been going through.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I have been packing and repacking and unpacking and going down the check list and then weighing the weight of the bag and then thinking, what can I leave?
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: What should I take?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: What did I forget?
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I've been going through all of this stuff over and over and over again.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: And then finding out, oh, I don't know if I can take this on the plane.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if this is allowed in through customs.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: All the things.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: It is taking me so much longer.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm accustomed to a change of clothes and a toothbrush.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: I'm good to go, right?
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: not so in this case.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_01]: And part of me thinks that, you know, in my subconscious somewhere, I am overthinking it quite a lot.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know what that means.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: But here's something that's going to be very interesting.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe I'll share some of this when we get back.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm traveling with this group of guys.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: They are from all over the world.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: They're from different places around the United States.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: Some of them are from the Valley where I live here in the Colorado Rockies.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: Some are from Texas, some are from...
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think Oklahoma some are from the UK, United Kingdom, every one of the guys that I've met thus far, and I've not met them all clearly, but everyone that I've met thus far has just been superb, fantastic human being, I am super excited to get to know these people, but at the same time, I also recognize these guys are kind of all alpha males.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: I might be wrong about that, but it's going to be so interesting.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: to get people together on a trip to the highest point in the African continent.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: Some of them who are not mountaineers, who have never climbed before, maybe, no experience of very little experience.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: And when you have that many chiefs in the group, what is the group dynamic going to be like when things get tough?
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: And they will get tough.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: You don't get to 19,000 feet without things getting tough.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's just very, very curious what the group dynamic, the social dynamic will be.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: I know that everyone is starting with the intention of being a team, supporting each other, carrying each other to the top, and I imagine there will be some of that going on.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: But there's going to be
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I suspect some very interesting stories about how all this turns out, so that's something that I've been kind of percolating in the back of my mind, super excited to go through this adventure with these guys, but usually when you choose a team to go on an expedition like this, usually you hand-picked the people that you know already.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: the you know there's strengths and their weaknesses need to try to get a group of people that complement each other in those strengths.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, where I'm weak, someone else could be strong and how we could succeed is a team together and all that sort of thing.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: This group isn't really like that.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: This is a group of guys who said, yes, I would like to do something huge, and I would like to support we see hope.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to get together with a group of guys and do our best.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: but many of us don't even know each other.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: So it's going to be a lot of fun.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: Enough of me blabbing about it.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: I am starting the climb.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: You're time now.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm starting the climb.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: You're tomorrow.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I appreciate your thoughts.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to let Carl and Derek take over from the backpacking and blisters podcast.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_03]: hello everybody welcome to the adventure sports podcast i am direct summer bill and with me today is my partner from our podcast back by king and blisters carol man really i mean carol man really are no joke man really i have no joke prepared as you can tell let's see what you can do go for it yeah welcome to the vintage sports podcast is honored to be here's co-host darexville is my co-host and he was actually playing on getting a brain transplant but then he changes mind
- 13:15[SPEAKER_03]: I love how you carry the bad jokes from our podcast over to this one seamlessly.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_03]: So good.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_03]: That was really, that was really bad.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_03]: It was so good.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_03]: This is going to be fun.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_03]: I'm excited.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_02]: We're on the adventure sports podcast.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_02]: My friends, this is awesome.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's like you've never had an adventure before.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_03]: You sound a little too excited.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_03]: Is that safe to say?
- 13:33[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to be talking about adventure.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_02]: where we get the worst backpacking trip of all time, which is a trip both of us went on a couple years ago, so we're going to get to that.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_02]: And a bit about us is our podcast backpacking wishes is tips and tales with a sense of humor.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_02]: So if you don't have a sense of humor, then you're in the wrong place.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, don't listen.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_02]: That's fine.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_02]: Don't listen.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's right.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_02]: So we've been buddies for years and we'd like to play off each other, poke fun each other, but it's
- 14:02[SPEAKER_03]: Carl may be bald guys, but I still style his hair as best I can, and that's why we still manage to have great conversation and hang out, right?
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm the only guy.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_02]: Alright, so you will not believe the series of unfortunate events decisions that all happen on this one trip.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_02]: That's where we're going to get to, but we got to give you a little bit of backstory first.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_02]: So, so what's the backstory of like this type of trip we go on?
- 14:26[SPEAKER_03]: The back story, okay, this is like an annual trip we do every July.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_03]: We get a group of guys Usually buddies we know and we go on this adventure supposed to be some epic journey and this particular trip and in This year was just I won't don't keep it away.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_03]: Don't get away in a nutshell.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_03]: It's just disaster after disaster and we had all kinds of Ridicularity going on
- 14:48[SPEAKER_02]: A couple things you have to know about our crew is that we've been doing this for years for decades.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: We've been going with these guys pretty much the same guys, and so you would think that people that go back packing for so long would be very experienced, be very wise, and be very good decision makers, and really none of that is the case.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: Is that fair to say?
- 15:07[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, yeah, I mean, should we give them like a little quick highlight thing before we do this or no?
- 15:13[SPEAKER_03]: Should we give them nothing?
- 15:14[SPEAKER_03]: you want what does that mean I was going to say you know the story is got broken friendships wrestling old men with bags on their feet lightning and bad and swords and we got nothing so the other thing that you have to know is
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: we kind of up the any of the years back where he thought it was fun to do something ridiculous and crazy on the backpacking trip and so I actually got a trophy I got one of the flea market that we called the strider award named after some of the lord of the rings so whoever brought or did the most ridiculous thing on our July trip was awarded the strider award for the year so that kind of plays into what weird things we have so
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: Without giving anything away to your key gives me examples of things people have done or brought over the years.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_03]: One example of the shredder award was a buddy of ours brought some inflatable rafts that you could use as boats, uses loungers at camp, just pretty pretty ridiculous, heavy, but he brought it.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_03]: One year, the same guy built about and floated around using those and so he sailed across a lake.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_03]: So I mean, something like that, will you do something awesome or something outlandish?
- 16:20[SPEAKER_03]: You're going to probably get the shredder award.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_02]: You're storytelling's amazing.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_02]: I think people are imagining some people be like packing in a full-size canoe or something into the back under.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_02]: That is not what happened.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_03]: It basically happened.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_03]: Now, have you got on the shredder work?
- 16:33[SPEAKER_03]: Did you do anything awesome?
- 16:34[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_03]: You did.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_03]: You did actually.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_03]: I think the year, the year you got it, I'm going to mention quite because it was pretty hot.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_03]: He, this, this guy right here, with no hair, brought, repelling gear in his backpack.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_02]: I got it.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_03]: That's, that's one reason to do.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_03]: You, you brought, took his repelling down a mountain.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_03]: It was pretty red.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_02]: I got the Striderworld because we did a trip in maroon bells in Colorado where it's like a four pass loop.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_02]: It's a tough trip and I carried a patio chair strapped my backpack over the entire four passes.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_03]: That was absurd.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_03]: Um, so I'm saying the Striderworld you got might be your wife told me it was a high lead of your life.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_03]: Is it?
- 17:08[SPEAKER_03]: Possibly.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_03]: One of them.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so anyway, that's just the backstory.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_02]: Let's get to this, my friend.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_02]: So we went to Yosemite a few years back.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_02]: We've gone to Yosemite a number of times, kind of like our stopping rounds.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_02]: This trip could not have gotten worse.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_02]: And so we're going to start with events leading up to the trip to the trip itself.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_02]: And so folks, if you have done backpacking trips or plan to do a backpacking trip in the future, hopefully this is some sort of an encouragement because people that have gone before making all these mistakes, like it can't get any worse than
- 17:40[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you think after years and years over a decade of doing whatever, like we would have had a dial, but this trip just proved like it doesn't matter, like stuff can just still go wrong in a matter how long you've been doing this.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_03]: So, correct.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_03]: Here we go.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_02]: So we're gonna go chronological order.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: Do you know what chronological means?
- 17:56[SPEAKER_03]: It means your hair is slowly going like that.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, that's receding.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_03]: That's my bad.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_03]: Karan, yeah, in order, from the beginning, here we go.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I think you hit on the hair thing enough.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think you're good there, dude.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_03]: I have a couple more.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_03]: I might break out later, just buckle up, buckle up.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so this all started before the trip a guy who is relatively new to our trip into our group was super excited to go He got on the previous year.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_02]: He crushed it.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_02]: He was a lot of fun to have but he calls me up and he says just see you know I have a little bit of a back injury and I think I'll be good for the trip I just wanted to give you a heads up because I just want to be fair and just let you know like I might have to bail and I'm like He lives in other states.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, I don't know what that means like I don't know how your back feels so I was like if you think you can go
- 18:41[SPEAKER_02]: You can go like, how do I know, right?
- 18:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, what is, what do you say to that?
- 18:45[SPEAKER_03]: Like, what's a little bit of a back injury?
- 18:47[SPEAKER_02]: I don't really know what that means.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_03]: I don't really know what that means.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_03]: Like he was sore back.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, could be a sore back.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_03]: Did he say he might bail?
- 18:52[SPEAKER_02]: He said he might bail?
- 18:53[SPEAKER_02]: He really wanted to go.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't want to bail.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_02]: He said he's been, he said he's been doing exercise and stretches to make sure he's good to go for the trip.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_03]: How about an MRI?
- 19:02[SPEAKER_03]: How about that?
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: No, about that.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: We're like younger than I don't know that we're like throwing around MRIs like we are as we get older, right?
- 19:08[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just saying you're going to hear what happens and then you're going to be like, yeah, maybe you should have got the MRI.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, in retrospect, I don't know.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're a trip leader, yeah, I think what we're going to do is we're going to hit on what we should have done, obviously.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_02]: And so if you're a trip leader and somebody's like, I have a back injury and we're doing a hard trip, which is partially off trail involving navigation and clambering up and over rocks and downcans and things.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, would you say no to that guy?
- 19:32[SPEAKER_03]: Again, it's so subjective, like we saw him the year before.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_03]: He was amazing.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_03]: He kept up no problem.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_03]: Super fun guy to be around.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_03]: And then he's like, and then he's like, I got a little bit of a bit of a big injury.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what that means.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_03]: I've had a little bit of a back injury, but I'm still doing a lot of my normal stuff.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_02]: Are you bragging right now?
- 19:49[SPEAKER_02]: Is it like a humble bragging?
- 19:51[SPEAKER_03]: I'm kind of bragging.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's a big deal.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_03]: Like I can lift up like a two pound bag of trash.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_03]: So what can you do?
- 19:56[SPEAKER_02]: I took it in the mailbox, I got a back injury.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_03]: Wow, that's, I mean, if you can get up and down from the toilet, you can come on the trap, that's my, you know what I mean?
- 20:03[SPEAKER_02]: That's a test, okay, so folks, if you're trying to figure this out in the future, that's the libous test is, can you easily get up and down from the toilet?
- 20:10[SPEAKER_02]: So, there you go.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there you go, that's the bar.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_02]: So that's the first thing, alright, so that's kind of like setting the stage, second thing will happen.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_03]: The setting the stage, we were maybe two miles in, right?
- 20:21[SPEAKER_03]: We're just pressed it over a little hill, we went around a lake, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_03]: At one point and and we all kind of go like hey, what's the deal?
- 20:32[SPEAKER_03]: We all kind of like gather around him He's like he tells us he's tweaked his back.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_03]: It hurts really bad But he wants to push on he wants to push on tough guy so we I think isn't that isn't this the point where we I remember taking some of his gear at this point
- 20:48[SPEAKER_03]: I'm putting it in my back.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so we decide to push on with him because at this point, we don't really have a plan B for like how do we evacuate somebody from a trail?
- 20:55[SPEAKER_02]: This is before like all the garment and reaches and things like that.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_01]: I know I know I'm not even here.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm halfway around the world, but I had to interrupt for giving me to share campfire ranch.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's just too cool to pass up.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a mountain biker and you have a group of mountain biker friends, or maybe you're a hiker, that sort of thing, you really need to check this out.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: My friend Sam started campfire ranch several years ago, and his goal, his mission, is to energize places by creating meaningful human
- 21:28[SPEAKER_01]: And all of the campfire range locations from their campgrounds to trailside lodges to back country huts, their goal is to help you stay in the place and in the way that you want, so that you can spend more time getting out there and getting after it.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_01]: Campfire Ranch Little Sugar is a trailside lodge located in Belivista, Arkansas, just north of Bentonville, the mountain bike capital of the world.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: The lodge features seven private bedrooms with on-sweet bathrooms and communal spaces for gathering, meeting with others and relaxing after a long day on the trails.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: Little Sugar has immediate access to 160 plus miles of public trails designed for mountain biking gravel biking, trail running and hiking, and it also has easy access to the food, art, and music scene of downtown Bentonville.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_01]: So grab some buddies and go to www.campfirerange.co slash ASP.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's not.com.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's .co slash ASP and you'll get 15% off nightly base rates at little sugar and bell of us to Arkansas.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: And this opportunity is valid all the way through 2026.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: But you know how these things go, your weekend is going to fill up quickly.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: So go right now to campfirerans.co slash ASP to plan your big adventure.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: We've talked about this.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_02]: Wisdom would suggest just send the guy back to the trail.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_02]: He'd give me the keys to your car and like go figure out buddy.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's your fault.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_02]: But one of my faults as a leader is I'm a people please, I just want to make sure every can go, every day is a good time.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_02]: So about so we hit this lake and at that point we're going off trail.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_02]: And that's when we, yeah, what did you say?
- 23:16[SPEAKER_02]: We start divving up the gear.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_03]: We well, we I think we all decided like let's take some way off of his gear.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_03]: I remember putting stuff in my backpack pots or clothes or something A and and by the way Too many clothes.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_03]: Let's let's talk about that for a second too many clothes.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_03]: We wait for outfits for outfits
- 23:32[SPEAKER_03]: Um, so it was just, you know, what's just fine?
- 23:35[SPEAKER_03]: Like it's, I've been in his shoes.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_03]: I know how he feels.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_03]: I think we've talked about this sentence and we should have been like, you know what?
- 23:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think this isn't going to work.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_03]: Like you're screaming and you have a back injury and you're basically giving us all your gear.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_03]: And it's going to get harder.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_03]: We should have sent a back.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_02]: That was the easy part.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_03]: That was definitely our mistake.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_03]: For sure.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_02]: I think, yeah, if you're two to three miles into the trip and you're
- 24:02[SPEAKER_03]: Is this the problem with like you got a bunch of dudes?
- 24:06[SPEAKER_03]: We're all like what are we are we in our 40s yet we're in our 30s I don't know like 30s Let's say and it's just like that ego thing is like now do we got it we can keep going like there's no I'm not dead if I'm not dead.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going basically so That was that goddess in the butt right there for sure, but okay, so we we kept going though We kept going his pack must have weighed like five pounds at that point and
- 24:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think only three of the dudes actually took weight out of his pack.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_02]: It was Derek and I guess so we're gonna wear that badge proudly like we carried his weight, but really it's kind of I took it.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of like a foolish badge because we shouldn't have done that at all.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_02]: So okay so anyway adding more tension to the trip.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_02]: I decided I want to make a documentary.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to film this trip.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_02]: And I had I known it had a time about the disaster nature, like that would have been the storyline.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_02]: But I was just trying to film, but I was also in charge of the trip.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_02]: And so I was also trying to navigate as we go off trail and go in search of a lake.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_02]: And so we apply me up to this raise and I'm trying to get these epic shots of like the lake we just left in the backdrop, I'm getting shots of us literally putting gear in each other's pack from like, you know, sharing the load there.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm trying to film and I'm trying to navigate horrible idea.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_02]: I should have had, I don't know why you didn't step up Derek, why didn't you navigate?
- 25:22[SPEAKER_03]: Why, well, I probably, I should have, I think it was dealing with his, his, his weight, his gear and I had some text off of my own.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_03]: I think that was part of the mentality was like, oh, we'll just, you know,
- 25:34[SPEAKER_03]: We'll just push through this off-road section, and we can figure it out.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_03]: We've glanced at the map a few times, like we know we were going there.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: There were like three or four people on the trip qualified to navigate off-trail, and somehow none of them shipped in.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_02]: So I was trying to navigate and film the same time.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_03]: Nobody.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_02]: We never found the link.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody found it.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_02]: We ended up just camping in some podium, like, cruddy spot, and it just wasn't, I mean, I don't even think there were members where we can't do that bad.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_03]: I don't, I don't, I thought we can't somewhere else.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_03]: I thought day two was day one and you're telling me day two, whatever, I got all confused, but I didn't even, we all failed.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_03]: Like I should have got the map out and like, uh, with somebody else because you're fiddling with all this other junk and we should have been like, this is where we're going.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_03]: Let's, let's just go here, but we didn't do that.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_03]: We didn't do that.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_02]: So when you're in front of the lake and so as a result on day two, we had to figure out where the heck we were and then figure our way kind of across this open area back to the trail.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_02]: So day two, Derek, what goes down towards the beginning?
- 26:29[SPEAKER_03]: So we gather, we're going down this, kind of like a rock granite face with a river going through it.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_03]: And I hear another yelp.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_03]: I hear another yelp from another back issue.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's when we all kind of gather it around and we're like, what are we gonna do?
- 26:46[SPEAKER_03]: What are we gonna do?
- 26:48[SPEAKER_03]: We had two competing ideas, which was your idea was like,
- 26:53[SPEAKER_03]: we need to stay on the trail or get back to the trail and kind of follow this out and maybe there's an escape hatch out here or we just keep going or whatever right and then we had this other theory that was like well we're trying to go over there on the map and I bet if we just go up and over this this ridge that we really don't know where it's going to end up we have an idea then that'd be a lot quicker but also a lot more challenging because you're you know the grade was just pretty steep so
- 27:22[SPEAKER_03]: What do we do?
- 27:23[SPEAKER_03]: Do we just take all of his weight and just let him climb up by himself?
- 27:27[SPEAKER_03]: Or do we just like battle and go to the trail and go around?
- 27:30[SPEAKER_03]: And it became this, it became this like, I don't know, muteness argument, muteness.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you're, you're making this really interesting story very boring.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_03]: Am I?
- 27:39[SPEAKER_03]: Do I need to jump in?
- 27:40[SPEAKER_03]: Just, oh, okay, great one.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_02]: The crux is that we had two dudes, one of them by the back guy, the least experienced guys in our trip, they were like, we're not going to keep going down this river.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_02]: The river was kind of like our way to figure out where we're on the map.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_02]: Instead, we're going to climb over a treacherous ridge.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_02]: With the back guy, we're going to lead the way, going into spot where the Ranger specifically said not to go, just so we can get to our campsite faster and we're going to basically
- 28:11[SPEAKER_02]: Who's with us?
- 28:12[SPEAKER_02]: This is a two-loud, type-aid guys.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_02]: Lead the chart, right?
- 28:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that was interesting, because you had a lot of Meli go going on there.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_03]: And it was like, and if you think about it too, let's think about some of the other side.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_03]: Like, if we went up the crazy pass and did that, we didn't do that, obviously, but, if we went up and did that, then the trip's just like, a lot shorter for everybody else, right?
- 28:33[SPEAKER_03]: Unless we decided to do something else, but, yeah, let's alter the entire trip.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_02]: No, it's not, I think it's a lot longer.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's going to be dyes, if we go up.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_02]: Probably you actually I wouldn't even put the back guy in that yeah, but yeah, I just kind of was hanging back I was like letting people kind of hash it out and argue and the guys that you know put the least effort into the trip Like try to decide for everybody.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_02]: How does your spot where you like you know what we should listen to wisdom on this or are you kind of like I'm with you guys I think we should go for whatever reason I think I just like compounded the melee go issue that trip.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_03]: I don't why there's something in the air
- 29:10[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe it was a full moon.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, you know what?
- 29:15[SPEAKER_02]: I think we could do that ridge.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_02]: I think we could do it.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_02]: We could make the ridge.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like a war movie.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_02]: Part of me wanted the challenge.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_02]: Part of me wanted the challenge.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_03]: But in hindsight, I'm like, that was a terrible idea.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's a range of like, this area is off limits.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: This is where you're going to die.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I feel like that's good advice, right?
- 29:35[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it's probably the best advice we've got for my Ranger in a while.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: So we had like a like a powwow and finally convinced them to keep going down to the trail which happened to be like epic scenery along the way.
- 29:45[SPEAKER_02]: All right, but just having guys that were at least qualified try to you serve the trip plan was really crazy.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_02]: So okay, so then this is where it gets like even worse.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: So we have a full day of hiking.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_02]: Not as much goes on the rest of the day until that night.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_02]: So that night we made camp.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_02]: We have a good time hanging out at camp and Derek
- 30:08[SPEAKER_02]: oh yes so everybody's kind of hanging around the campfire and I was like all right Derek and I had to crash the tent you guys good kind of you know take everything and they're like oh yeah yeah we're good because of course there experience backpackers so we go to sleep we fall asleep and I wake up in the middle of the night and everybody's you know it's like probably two two three am and I hear a sound outside the tent crackling the campfire is still going
- 30:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I was like, but it's like full blown campfire.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, are they still hanging out?
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what's going on?
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: I look around.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, everything's in their tents.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_02]: And so there's like this ghost campfire.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody's sitting around.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's just going as if they never stinkin' put the campfire out.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_02]: Like, we could have started a forest fire on that trip.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_02]: Did you see flames or embers?
- 30:49[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what were you looking at?
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: No, no, no.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: Full fire.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: Full fire?
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: Borderline bonfire.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_02]: That is yeah, that is one of them so I get up and yeah, Derek's like Carl you take care of it So I got out of the sand and and got another buddy and we were not too far from the lake So we started kind of you know gathering water and we eventually put it out Next morning the guys like oh no, no, we put it out
- 31:13[SPEAKER_02]: But I guess we didn't like separate the wood out and so it kind of had reheated and like reignited somehow.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_02]: Which is possible if you do a terrible job putting it out, right?
- 31:23[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I mean, they didn't pee on it, they didn't do any water balls on it, like nothing.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_02]: No, I think they put, they said they put it out.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_02]: They said they put it out.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: They just didn't separate the wood, a jeet.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: I literally just explained this, re-listening.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_03]: Look, all I'm saying is like, I don't think they know what puts out a fire.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_03]: And I think maybe we need to go over that.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, throw dirt on it.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_03]: I think they do now.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_03]: Throw some dirt.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_03]: I don't, I mean, anything.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_02]: We could have been in the news for a bad reason from that trip.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: But okay.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_02]: So that's day two.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_02]: Day three.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_02]: What's going on?
- 31:57[SPEAKER_03]: Day three.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_03]: We make it to the exposed plateau.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_03]: I like to call this.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_03]: So this is where we had a
- 32:04[SPEAKER_03]: a glorious thunderstorm, lightning storm, but to make it worse, it was raining, it was like hailing, I think at one point, which is torrential, you know, all just like fully exposed, but then one of our guys has a, don't ask me why, we have a huge camera slider because Carl wanted to document this whole thing, which was like the film, the trip, we talked about that.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_03]: Super obnoxious weight and long piece of metal.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_03]: It's basically like a large metal pole, large metal pole, not only that, he,
- 32:32[SPEAKER_03]: this particular character in our group uh he loved carry a ginormous metal sword five pounds just cuz just cuz just cuz so one army's got a story we explain this are we we had the shred of he's got the sword in one hand he's got a football in the other hand he's got the metal pole in the backpack exposed lightning
- 32:52[SPEAKER_03]: Totally ridiculous.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_03]: So we are then running for cover essentially.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_03]: Do we tell him to such drop all the metal stuff and just run for cover?
- 33:00[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_03]: We made run for it.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_03]: We had one other guy who was so cool.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_03]: We had one guy who's so cold.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I'm going to quit and turn around.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_03]: But I'm like, there's really nowhere to go to.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_03]: Like, we're going to go.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_03]: So we all just try to hunker down and get out of the storm.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so we had one person who almost got struck by lightning because he's like asking for it and then another guy who just didn't bring he brought like a water resistant jacket not a waterproof jacket, even though the gearless had waterproof I guess I could have gone around him like tested all of the waterproof coatings I thought he had a punch show.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know either way.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's soaked through because we got the down porrises for awesome.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_02]: I guess in the bright side like had that forest fire rage out of control like it would have been put out the next day.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, that's true.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_03]: That's true.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_03]: So we wouldn't have been charged with anything, probably.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: That's great.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_03]: We were going to get away with it.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_03]: That was so pretty well.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_03]: So after that lighting storm, I think, I believe it.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_03]: Right after we pressed it over that hill, the sun came out a little bit.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_03]: And then we met Old Man Trail.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_03]: I guess I call them.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_03]: He had the plastic bags on the feet.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_03]: He had been going over a hundred miles.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_03]: Old Man.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_03]: And he was giving us some stories about where he's coming from, some different state or something.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_03]: full on like Lewis and Clark kind of guy.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, dude, this guy is a baller.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_03]: And it kind of inspired me to keep going.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_03]: So we were all wiped.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, it inspired you to keep going like, like, you're going to quit.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's going on here.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_03]: No, I'm not going to quit, but it was like, it was that little like extra like push you needed to get through the day.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I was like, this guy can do it.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_03]: And he's got 150 with bags on his feet.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to I'm going to make it to camp.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to be okay.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_02]: Well, maybe you did to use
- 34:43[SPEAKER_02]: That was day three.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_02]: We had some other stuff go down as well.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't super positive.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_02]: We might get to that later, but moving on to the last day.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_02]: All we had to do is we got to descend.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_02]: We actually head down.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_02]: The other side of the assembly.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_02]: We hit the job your trail kind of like head out through a spot called Twalmy.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_02]: It's like downhill to like a relatively flat portion pretty easy.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_02]: And this is like you'd think it'd be easy, right?
- 35:11[SPEAKER_02]: So we encounter on the last day, somebody who's become a notorious character on our podcast, legendary.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_02]: Legendary, a woman named Ranger Annie.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_02]: And she is a feisty Ranger who's going to take no nonsense from any of you folks out there if you come across her.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_02]: And so she stopped to check her permit, which is
- 35:33[SPEAKER_02]: what they're supposed to do and then she checked to see how many bear canisters we have because they're required and you're 70 for your food storage and bear canisters are probably the number one most annoying piece of gear in the world so yes because you understand these are stomping rounds we bring bear canisters still but we strategically camp where the bears aren't coming and we haven't had an issue in decades in her defense like yeah we were trying to uh... but the rules push the limits
- 35:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, push the limits a little bit.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_02]: So we didn't have enough bear canisters.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: Some of the guys were trying to like mislead her about this.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_02]: I just came around like, look, here's how many we have.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's not enough for the size of our group, but then we had eight guys with us.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: And so what happened?
- 36:11[SPEAKER_03]: So then she's like, she started late.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_03]: She was not intimidated by all eight of us or how many we have.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_03]: She just like laid it out or with the sword.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_03]: The sword or with the sword or with the metal pole in the football like she just came out and laid it out and she's like, well, this is a nice one that you can do and you guys I'm going to have to write you up that's not how she taught she got she went full like
- 36:39[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, well, it's the last day of our trip and we haven't seen a barrier.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_02]: Are we still bear killers?
- 36:44[SPEAKER_02]: And I was trying to like ask politely with my soft kind boys.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_02]: That didn't work.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: That just set her off.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_03]: That's what happened.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_03]: Here's what happened.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_03]: It's like she laid down the smack right in front of Carl in front of all of his buddies and Carl hated it.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_03]: He hated a woman just like dropping the facts.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_03]: and amasculating him in front of his friends.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_03]: And I will say, when she got out that little pad of paper to start to write, what's your name?
- 37:05[SPEAKER_03]: Can I get your name?
- 37:06[SPEAKER_03]: What's your name?
- 37:07[SPEAKER_03]: And we were all kind of like, oh dude, he's getting ready.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_03]: He's gonna get blacklisted from Yosemite.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_03]: What's happening right now?
- 37:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_02]: It was serious.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_02]: And kind of funny.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_02]: So as a result, I have not been back to Yosemite since.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: just kidding.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: I don't I think that there has to be some sort of due process involved to get blacklisted, but at the time we thought we were getting blacklisted from the assembly.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_03]: We did.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_02]: I tried in on a good note.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_02]: I yeah, but that didn't work.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_02]: So basically we got reprimanded on our way out.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_02]: And then we had just like a couple miles to go and of course is a forest fires somewhere else like on the eastern side of the Sierra's.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_02]: And we get smoked in the last couple miles of trails.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_02]: So we're just inhaling this deep smoke.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_02]: Just to clarify, not from our campfire.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_02]: not for our camera.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_03]: As far as we know, it's far as you know.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: So anyway, so that's how the trip ended.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_02]: We had some other stuff go down that was not preferable, but those were the the low lights of the worst backpackaged revol time where we somehow still made it to the end.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody died.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_02]: I guess that's good.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody died.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_02]: That we could have died.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_02]: Could have been blacklisted.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_03]: Friendships for friendships were ruined.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_03]: You know, we had wrestling.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_03]: We had a wrestling match.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it was memorable.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_02]: You want more to that story.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_02]: You can check out our podcast that's been referenced at number of times.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, I think that if you're going to plan a backpacking trip in the future, or if you're already a backpacker, or like, this should give you confidence that you can definitely plan a better trip than we did.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_03]: I would agree.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_03]: I would agree.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_02]: You got some trivia.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_02]: A part of our show that we'd like to introduce you to is we get, we always have a trivia section of where you typically do.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_02]: And I've got national parks trivia coming up right after there we go.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: Alright, so National Park sure he's been kind of like a fun part of our show over the years.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_02]: We actually had the most recent National Park's director on our show last season, and we actually asked him some questions, and I was able to stop him with some of the National Park's questions.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that does that make you feel better about always failing this review?
- 39:04[SPEAKER_03]: For sure, for sure.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_02]: Did you?
- 39:06[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, remind me, did you give him the, uh, the big sir?
- 39:09[SPEAKER_02]: yeah so the one that we stumped upon was like it was a trick question I asked him like what what's your favorite thing about big sir national park which is a state park out of Korea and he he fell victim to that so yeah well word and well word and yeah well word and I don't have any trick questions this time I just got straight questions our rules you got to get two out of three to get the crash please play along as we go are you ready Derek I don't know
- 39:38[SPEAKER_02]: What is the biggest national park by Lansize?
- 39:42[SPEAKER_02]: Is it A, Denali, B, Yellowstone, C, Wrangles Saint Elias, or D, Death Valley?
- 39:52[SPEAKER_03]: Death Valley, okay, we got, oh geez, that's a good one.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_03]: Um, let me think.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think I've asked this before.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's get, I don't remember, okay wait, okay go through one more time.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_03]: You have wrangle, you had death fally, you had to do that.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_02]: No, the yellowstone death fally.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_03]: I want to say denali and then the wrangle.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna, I'm gonna go wrangle.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_03]: The wrangle?
- 40:17[SPEAKER_02]: Wrangle is correct.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_02]: It's like bigger than like a couple of these national parks plus Switzerland combined.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_03]: So it's gonna be canceled.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, okay.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's in South Eastern Alaska.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, it's on our list.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_02]: It's on our list, yeah.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_03]: I've heard of that, I don't know where it was on.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_02]: Number two, wish of these is not a national park when we pay for questions.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_02]: is it a black hanging of the gunnison be dead horse point or see white sands is also written uh... they're not two of the rational parks one state park i'm going to say the gun one
- 40:55[SPEAKER_02]: So he said gun, so that can't get into the gun, and I just like he called the gun one.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_03]: The gun one, you'll know.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_02]: All right, black can of the gun is in colorado, and it is a national park.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_02]: No!
- 41:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's actually not on my list.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like a really small, I don't know what's a national park, like it's beautiful there, but it's just so small.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_02]: So dead horse point is a state park in Utah.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, dead horse, dead horse.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_02]: It comes down to a true false question number three.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_03]: Pressure's on, I'm so bad at true false.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_03]: Here we go.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_02]: On the list of proposed national parks is a place called Craters of the Moon.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, wow.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_03]: Is this new?
- 41:36[SPEAKER_03]: Is this you just made this up, didn't you?
- 41:39[SPEAKER_02]: No, there's there's actually like a there's a pretty extensive list of proposed national parks.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_02]: I did not realize how many national parks like proposals.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_02]: There are there is like one in like Western Colorado, which it's nice out there But I wouldn't put a national park there.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_03]: Creators of the moon.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it sounds so good.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_03]: It sounds so like legit for a park.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_03]: It was great
- 42:00[SPEAKER_03]: That's like, I think you know that I want to say true, which is why I think it's false.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_03]: But I want to say false, but I feel like if I say it false, I got it wrong.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_03]: No, I'm Prince's bride.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_03]: Do you just pick one?
- 42:09[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to say true.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_02]: All right, true is correct.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_02]: So it's not actually on the moon, just to clarify.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_02]: It's, I think it's in South Dakota, and it's got some craters there.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_03]: Like, like the moon, craters the moon.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like the moon, but not of the moon for sure.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's a cool name, though.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_02]: So Derek and I put some pretty serious things on the line for trivia.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_02]: So you want to track that with us in our show, feel free to join us with the happy part of the family.
