- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
- 0:04Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia, Judice.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Fessler. Hi, guys, welcome back to
- 0:14Speaker 2: another episode of Dirty Rush. My name is Jen Fessler,
- 0:16Speaker 2: and today I'm speaking with a group of sorority sisters
- 0:20Speaker 2: that recently graduated, who are here to tell us how
- 0:22Speaker 2: they keep in touch now that they are no longer
- 0:24Speaker 2: in college together. All right, you guys, So we are
- 0:28Speaker 2: talking today to Lauren and Kate. Hi, ladies, Hi, Hi,
- 0:33Speaker 2: So tell me, So, Lauren, where did you guys go
- 0:35Speaker 2: to school? And what sorority were you in?
- 0:37Speaker 3: We went to TCU and we're in Theta.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You're in Theta. Okay. And when did you guys graduate?
- 0:43Speaker 3: We graduated in twenty twenty four.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Okay, So, Kate, where did you move after graduation?
- 0:49Speaker 1: I actually stayed local. So I moved to Dallas, just
- 0:53Speaker 1: like forty five minutes from Fort Worth.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Okay. And where are you now?
- 0:58Speaker 1: I'm still in Dallas right now. Now, I'm just traveling
- 1:01Speaker 1: for work. So I'm in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Okay, okay, but you're still in Dallas and Lauren, I
- 1:06Speaker 2: moved to San Diego.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Postgrad.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Okay, great, So was it hard to keep in touch?
- 1:11Speaker 2: Were you all close in college?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Yeah? We lived together our senior year and it was
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's definitely been an adjustment after college staying in touch
- 1:22Speaker 3: and just getting into that groove, because I also feel
- 1:25Speaker 3: like it's so subjective to each friendship. You know, I
- 1:28Speaker 3: have friends that I talk to every week. I have
- 1:30Speaker 3: friends that I talk to every month, or I don't
- 1:33Speaker 3: really talk to them, but then whenever we see each
- 1:34Speaker 3: other in person, we just pick right back up. So
- 1:37Speaker 3: I do think that it kind of is just subject
- 1:39Speaker 3: to the friendship, and it's been interesting figuring out those
- 1:42Speaker 3: dynamics and seeing how it's been.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys can't even imagine what it was like
- 1:47Speaker 2: for us old people after graduating, and there was no
- 1:51Speaker 2: social media and there was no cell phones, so that
- 1:55Speaker 2: was like, right, so totally different time. But what I hate.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Do you still talk to a lot of people since
- 2:03Speaker 2: graduating from your sortie?
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:05Speaker 1: I think honestly, one of the benefits of being pretty
- 2:10Speaker 1: close to TCU is, uh, you kind of are able
- 2:13Speaker 1: to keep in contact with a lot of people, But
- 2:16Speaker 1: like Lauren said, it kind of ebbs and flows. Some people.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I remained really close with some people I got closer
- 2:22Speaker 1: with just through location, and some people there's kind of
- 2:27Speaker 1: that more constant effort and thought of being like, oh,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I need to keep in contact with this person, put
- 2:34Speaker 1: in more of an effort than you were when you
- 2:36Speaker 1: were just living down the street, or for me and
- 2:38Speaker 1: Lauren's case, living down the hall from each other.
- 2:41Speaker 2: What's made you do stay in such? Is it mainly texting?
- 2:44Speaker 1: You have texting calls facetimes. I think social media feels
- 2:50Speaker 1: a little bit surface level, so I usually try to
- 2:53Speaker 1: put that second second step in and the extra effort.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Good for you. You don't hear that that often? No, I
- 3:01Speaker 2: love that because, like you know, it is even with me,
- 3:05Speaker 2: now that we have social media and cell phones, I
- 3:09Speaker 2: almost rather might go to is always to text rather
- 3:11Speaker 2: than to pick up the phone and talk, because a
- 3:13Speaker 2: lot of times there's just so much to catch up on.
- 3:15Speaker 2: It's been a while since I was in a sorority,
- 3:18Speaker 2: so sometimes it's easier to just you know, throw a
- 3:21Speaker 2: text out, get one back. And I think you're right.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I think there is a lot of value, even more
- 3:26Speaker 2: so in face to face, but at least, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: in talking and hearing each other's voices. What about group
- 3:32Speaker 2: chats are you guys? Do you guys have those going?
- 3:35Speaker 3: Yeah? I feel like we have quite a few group chats.
- 3:37Speaker 3: We have one of like everyone that lived in our
- 3:39Speaker 3: house in college together that were talking pretty often, and
- 3:43Speaker 3: then with like a larger group of friends that we
- 3:46Speaker 3: actually do a reunion with every year.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And do you do what do you do?
- 3:50Speaker 3: We? Well, we did our first one last year and
- 3:54Speaker 3: all of our friends actually came to visit me in
- 3:56Speaker 3: San Diego and it was julyve so it was beautiful
- 3:59Speaker 3: weather and we got to just spend like three days
- 4:03Speaker 3: all together at the beach. So that was really fun.
- 4:05Speaker 3: And I think we're trying to figure out dates, but
- 4:07Speaker 3: we're planning to do it again this year.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Oh that's so fun. I love that.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Do you think that like this whole friends for life thing?
- 4:15Speaker 2: I mean, you know when you're rushing and pledging and
- 4:18Speaker 2: you hear that a lot that you're going to make
- 4:21Speaker 2: your friends for life, And I think I personally think yes,
- 4:26Speaker 2: but you're not necessarily going to make thirty friends for life, right,
- 4:30Speaker 2: But what do you guys feel like? Do you feel
- 4:32Speaker 2: like it was more friends for four years for the
- 4:35Speaker 2: most part, or lots of friends for life.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I think I would say that when you're a freshman
- 4:41Speaker 3: or you're younger and you've just rushed, do you really
- 4:45Speaker 3: want to believe that, Oh, all of these sorority sisters
- 4:48Speaker 3: are going to be my sisters for life? And I
- 4:50Speaker 3: think that the sorority does kind of give you that
- 4:54Speaker 3: extra layer of bond and you know that you can
- 4:57Speaker 3: trust these people and fall back on them, at least
- 4:59Speaker 3: most of them. So that's nice to know and to have.
- 5:02Speaker 3: But definitely, since graduating college, I've realized how much effort
- 5:06Speaker 3: it truly does take to maintain a friendship that feels
- 5:09Speaker 3: real and that feels constant and is the most impactful
- 5:14Speaker 3: in your life. So I think that coming out of college,
- 5:17Speaker 3: I definitely do have a few people that I know well,
- 5:20Speaker 3: or at least I hope will be in my wedding
- 5:22Speaker 3: and we'll be there for all the big moments in
- 5:24Speaker 3: my life, or that I'll try to see every year.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But it's not as many as I think maybe I
- 5:29Speaker 3: thought I would have going into college. But that being said,
- 5:32Speaker 3: it's something I'm really okay with. I think it'd be
- 5:34Speaker 3: overwhelming of too many friends for life.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Thankate it's very dependent on the person and like what
- 5:41Speaker 2: they make of it.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I went into college thinking that I was going to
- 5:44Speaker 1: have all these best friends from Greek life because my
- 5:49Speaker 1: mom stayed very involved. She was the president of her
- 5:51Speaker 1: sorority back when she was in college, and so I
- 5:54Speaker 1: had this whole different viewpoint on it from what she
- 5:58Speaker 1: had shown me to then, like what I personally experienced.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I think some people love having the big friend group
- 6:07Speaker 1: and being friends with as many people as possible. Personally,
- 6:11Speaker 1: I like to have kind of a smaller group of friends.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So I think that I kind of was looking for
- 6:18Speaker 1: those specific people that stood out to me and those
- 6:20Speaker 1: specific people that I could get really close to. And
- 6:23Speaker 1: so it's not necessarily about making thirty friends for life,
- 6:27Speaker 1: but it's about finding your friends for life within those
- 6:30Speaker 1: thirty people.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I feel like that too. You know, since graduating, you
- 6:35Speaker 2: guys have changed and grown, and do you feel like
- 6:41Speaker 2: a lot of those friendships that you had it's more
- 6:45Speaker 2: difficult to feel the closeness. You know, there's your changing,
- 6:49Speaker 2: your friends are changing. Have you had some experiences where Wow,
- 6:52Speaker 2: I really love this person in college not so much anymore?
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like, you know, it's funny. I went
- 7:00Speaker 3: back to TCU this past weekend because my sister was graduating.
- 7:05Speaker 3: She's a couple of years younger than me, and I
- 7:08Speaker 3: have some friends that have younger siblings, some friends that
- 7:10Speaker 3: still live in the area. And there were a couple
- 7:12Speaker 3: of people I ran into who I was very close
- 7:14Speaker 3: with in college, and I was so excited to see them,
- 7:17Speaker 3: and I'd run up and I'd be like, Hey, how's
- 7:19Speaker 3: it going, and like, some people match that energy and
- 7:22Speaker 3: we're so excited. We just kind of picked back up.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Some people were like not as jazzed to see me,
- 7:29Speaker 3: and well, you were just a little less enthusiastic, and
- 7:34Speaker 3: I was like, what's going on? Like, I guess you
- 7:37Speaker 3: do kind of lose that level of closeness if you
- 7:39Speaker 3: don't put in the effort to keep up. And I'm
- 7:43Speaker 3: always happy to jump back into where I left off
- 7:46Speaker 3: with people, But some people are a little more reserved.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's true, but also change and you may not
- 7:50Speaker 2: have the things in common that you used to. Maybe
- 7:52Speaker 2: what you had in common was that you loved to
- 7:55Speaker 2: party and meet boys, and you know that was sort
- 7:59Speaker 2: of like your main focus. Well it was mine. I
- 8:01Speaker 2: don't know if it was yours. But you know, things change, right,
- 8:04Speaker 2: so sometimes sometimes that's a little bit harder. Have you
- 8:07Speaker 2: guys had any milestone celebrations or like get together as yet,
- 8:12Speaker 2: Like have you done the wedding thing if you guys,
- 8:14Speaker 2: do you guys have friends who've had babies, baby showers,
- 8:17Speaker 2: any of that.
- 8:19Speaker 1: No weddings and stuff. But I think with like what
- 8:23Speaker 1: Lauren said, her younger sister was graduating, and because we
- 8:27Speaker 1: got so close through college, like her family is kind
- 8:31Speaker 1: of like my extended family, So being able to go
- 8:35Speaker 1: back and like celebrate that and kind of like whenever
- 8:39Speaker 1: she's in town, it's like a it's a quick drive
- 8:42Speaker 1: for me. So it's so worth it to be able
- 8:44Speaker 1: to to spend that time and celebrate her family's milestones
- 8:49Speaker 1: because of the because of the relationship that we formed.
- 8:52Speaker 2: So right, well, you guys are still young, so that's coming.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I wonder, I mean, I'm imagining the you're imagine that
- 9:00Speaker 2: there will be sorority sisters at those milestones, at those weddings,
- 9:03Speaker 2: and that's gonna be fun.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Absolutely, what this is kind of a deeper question, but
- 9:10Speaker 2: what parts of sorority life do you think still impact
- 9:13Speaker 2: you today? Lauren?
- 9:16Speaker 3: For me. I think sisterhood has always been a major
- 9:19Speaker 3: theme in my life just growing up. I have two
- 9:21Speaker 3: younger sisters, and so my family was just so built
- 9:25Speaker 3: on sisterhood. But going through the Greek system and joining
- 9:30Speaker 3: a sorority just kind of made me think about it
- 9:32Speaker 3: in a new light and really made me evaluate like
- 9:36Speaker 3: how sisterhood can play into friendships, because I don't think
- 9:40Speaker 3: I ever had that mentality before where I could make
- 9:44Speaker 3: my friends my sisters too, since I already had that
- 9:46Speaker 3: and I held that so close to me, and so
- 9:49Speaker 3: it's really just like expanded my view of sisterhood. And
- 9:52Speaker 3: I think that bringing kind of the principles of sisterhood
- 9:56Speaker 3: into every person I interact with and just like really
- 10:00Speaker 3: wanting to be an anchor for people and trustworthy and
- 10:03Speaker 3: like I just I kind of think, like, oh, just
- 10:06Speaker 3: treat people like they're my sister and they'll be my
- 10:08Speaker 3: close friend, you know. I think that it's such a
- 10:11Speaker 3: beautiful way to approach life and friendships and college and
- 10:15Speaker 3: Greek life really just expanded that definition of sisterhood for me.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Lauren, if I was your age, you would never get
- 10:22Speaker 2: rid of me, I catch myself, I would glom onto you. Honey,
- 10:26Speaker 2: and I would never let go. And Kate, I'm saying
- 10:29Speaker 2: the same thing to you, but Lauren just s had
- 10:30Speaker 2: something very touching to me. But you tell me, Also
- 10:34Speaker 2: tell what what do you feel like? You know, what
- 10:37Speaker 2: parts of the love of your sobrity life really are
- 10:40Speaker 2: still impacting you.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I feel like I kind of agree with like what
- 10:44Speaker 1: Laurence said. I had a brother growing up, and I
- 10:48Speaker 1: always wanted sisters, so kind of to be able to
- 10:53Speaker 1: get that deeper level. I feel like Greek life as
- 10:58Speaker 1: a whole kind of a bonding experience. There's a lot
- 11:03Speaker 1: of like trials and tribulations that you go through in
- 11:06Speaker 1: college because there's a lot of growth and hardships that
- 11:09Speaker 1: you deal with, and so to have such a strong
- 11:13Speaker 1: support system and such a strong group of girls, like.
- 11:16Speaker 3: That's really.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Solidified the way that I view my friends and the
- 11:22Speaker 1: way that I feel like I can lean on my
- 11:23Speaker 1: friends that I didn't necessarily feel before with you know,
- 11:29Speaker 1: having a brother or having you know, someone who doesn't
- 11:32Speaker 1: really understands a lot of the things that girls go
- 11:35Speaker 1: through or the emotions that they deal with, so that
- 11:37Speaker 1: it was nice to kind of have that bond.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I love that all right, I'm gonna glom onto you too, Kate,
- 11:42Speaker 2: in my next lifetime when we're all the same age.
- 11:59Speaker 2: So tell me your perception. It has your perception of
- 12:03Speaker 2: Greek life change since you've graduated.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I think so. I think when I was in college,
- 12:10Speaker 1: there was this heavy emphasis on the sorority that you
- 12:15Speaker 1: were in and kind of these biases and stigmas to
- 12:22Speaker 1: certain parts of Greek life. But now seeing it from
- 12:26Speaker 1: a postgrad perspective and being able to bond with people from.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Other schools.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And kind of have that in common with people, I
- 12:35Speaker 1: think is definitely something that makes it painted in a
- 12:39Speaker 1: more positive light than I think it was sometimes viewed
- 12:42Speaker 1: in college.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Right. Interesting, What do you think, Lauren?
- 12:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it's interesting because when you join a sorority, especially
- 12:49Speaker 3: at like a Southern school, where there's just such a
- 12:52Speaker 3: huge drive for people to do so it feels like
- 12:55Speaker 3: this make or break thing, and it feels like you
- 12:58Speaker 3: have to be in the right house will perceive you
- 13:00Speaker 3: in the right way, and there's just so much image
- 13:03Speaker 3: associated with what really should be about just making friends
- 13:08Speaker 3: and being yourself and getting to make relationships with people
- 13:11Speaker 3: where you can be authentic. And so I think that Honestly,
- 13:15Speaker 3: as I went through college that just kind of those
- 13:18Speaker 3: walls kind of dropped, where like, you care so much
- 13:20Speaker 3: about being top house or whatever it is for you
- 13:23Speaker 3: that you care about. And then by the end of college,
- 13:26Speaker 3: and I think still continuing after college, I've just realized, like, oh,
- 13:30Speaker 3: the authority that I chose or that I was in
- 13:34Speaker 3: didn't matter because we were toping grades and we were
- 13:37Speaker 3: cool girls and we were smart and funny or whatever.
- 13:41Speaker 3: It mattered more that I found a place where I
- 13:45Speaker 3: could be myself, that I found girls that I could
- 13:47Speaker 3: be myself around, And it's really just like the relationships
- 13:52Speaker 3: that you take with you rather than like the status
- 13:54Speaker 3: of being in a certain house.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm definitely glomming onto both of you. Do you
- 13:58Speaker 2: feel like if you had to do it again and
- 14:01Speaker 2: you would go through the rush process differently, do you
- 14:03Speaker 2: think you'd still choose your house.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I think I would have. I really think I would have,
- 14:10Speaker 3: especially because of the girls that I spoke with during rush,
- 14:14Speaker 3: like they just made me feel so seen. However, I
- 14:18Speaker 3: rushed twice, so freshman year, I don't think I would
- 14:21Speaker 3: have maybe made the same decision as I did sophomore year,
- 14:24Speaker 3: just based on the lessons that I learned going through
- 14:27Speaker 3: Rush the first time versus second.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Okay, what about you, Kate, Yeah, I think honestly, I
- 14:34Speaker 1: feel like I have a very different viewpoint than the
- 14:38Speaker 1: average person because the year that we went through Rush,
- 14:41Speaker 1: our freshman year was all online because of COVID, So
- 14:48Speaker 1: it definitely kind of had a different experience. You're not
- 14:51Speaker 1: in the house, You're not feeling the vibe. But I'm
- 14:56Speaker 1: so glad that I met the people that I did,
- 15:00Speaker 1: and I don't have any regrets about, like any decisions
- 15:02Speaker 1: that I made because of that.
- 15:04Speaker 2: So glad to hear that. So you, guys, for both
- 15:07Speaker 2: of you, if someone is getting ready to graduate, what
- 15:10Speaker 2: advice would you give them on staying in touch and
- 15:13Speaker 2: maintaining their sorority friendships.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I would just say, like, it may feel small, but
- 15:21Speaker 3: a text can go a long way. There's been so
- 15:23Speaker 3: many times where I've felt distant from my college friends
- 15:27Speaker 3: because I chose to move so far away and just
- 15:30Speaker 3: to a place that not a lot of people went,
- 15:32Speaker 3: and a lot of people did, like I would say,
- 15:35Speaker 3: the majority of people. Kate, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Moved to Dallas, you know, and stayed in that area,
- 15:41Speaker 3: and so I have kind of gone through times where
- 15:43Speaker 3: I felt a little bit isolated or lonely because of
- 15:46Speaker 3: the decision that I made, but it always brightens my day,
- 15:50Speaker 3: like to get a text of two of my friends
- 15:53Speaker 3: being like, Oh, we're at lunch and we were just
- 15:55Speaker 3: thinking of you and like miss you so much. Like
- 15:58Speaker 3: just little things like that go a long way. It
- 16:00Speaker 3: doesn't need to be the pressure of having this hour
- 16:03Speaker 3: long face time to catch up on every play by
- 16:06Speaker 3: play of your life, Like you can get that when
- 16:08Speaker 3: you do a visit or something. But I think just
- 16:11Speaker 3: the text like thinking of you or this reminded me
- 16:14Speaker 3: of you, That's what impacts me the most, being so
- 16:17Speaker 3: far away. Just those little things and like little moments
- 16:21Speaker 3: that keep me still connected to everybody.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. So I recently went through something that
- 16:27Speaker 2: I will not boil you all with, but nothing tragic,
- 16:31Speaker 2: but something and I got like three different messages, just
- 16:34Speaker 2: texts just from sorority sisters. Hey, Jen, thinking about you,
- 16:39Speaker 2: love you here if you need me, And that's just
- 16:41Speaker 2: you know, that's everything, right. Yeah, give any advice for us, Kate,
- 16:45Speaker 2: just in terms of keeping in touch.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Yeah, kind of kind of tagging onto what Warren said,
- 16:52Speaker 1: I wish that someone would have told me that you
- 16:56Speaker 1: don't need to maintain the same friendship that you had
- 16:59Speaker 1: in college to still maintain that friendship, because I feel
- 17:03Speaker 1: like I had this huge pressure and like burden almost
- 17:08Speaker 1: of like, oh my goodness, I have to get them
- 17:11Speaker 1: this hour long phone call and catch up with this
- 17:13Speaker 1: person because I haven't talked to them all week, and
- 17:15Speaker 1: then that weekly phone call becomes monthly, and then it
- 17:19Speaker 1: ever ends up happening because it's now something you're dreading
- 17:22Speaker 1: versus shooting that quick little text where it's like hey,
- 17:26Speaker 1: I'm just thinking about you, or like hey saw this
- 17:28Speaker 1: and like it made me think of you. That goes
- 17:31Speaker 1: such a long way, and you don't need to know
- 17:35Speaker 1: every single minor life update in your friend's life to
- 17:38Speaker 1: still have that same relationship.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, I agree with that, and I think that
- 17:43Speaker 2: applies all around. Like sometimes if you're not seeing everyone
- 17:47Speaker 2: or to every if you're not seeing someone every day
- 17:49Speaker 2: or every week or every and you feel this pressure like,
- 17:53Speaker 2: oh my gosh, if I get on the phone, I
