A WakeMed police officer, 47-year-old Chad Penland, was arrested on felony charges of statutory sex with a child and indecent liberties with a child — allegations tied to an incident in February 2022. Suspended immediately after the news broke, WakeMed condemned the claims, stressing their zero-tolerance policy for any threat to a minor’s safety, even if the incident occurred off-campus. Penland, who previously served at WakeMed from 2014–2018 and later with the Morrisville Police Department, is currently jailed in Johnston County and set to return to court on July 30.
