Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: I know you're like, what's Emily doing in the speed today?
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's a Friday.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Well, here I am special episode of Hurdle Emily Abadi
- 0:10Speaker 2: here excited to bring you a conversation I had last
- 0:13Speaker 2: week in Los Angeles. This special episode, I have the
- 0:17Speaker 2: opportunity to sit down with Nike Master Trainer and Pyro
- 0:20Speaker 2: girl Christy Godzo, as well as Catherine Lee.
- 0:24Speaker 3: She is a.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Model, and we had a talk all about running to
- 0:28Speaker 2: celebrate Nike's newest sneaker launch. It is called the joy Ride. Now, firstly,
- 0:34Speaker 2: let's talk about the joy Ride. The joy Ride is
- 0:36Speaker 2: launching globally on August fifteen. The shoe is pretty much
- 0:40Speaker 2: made for people that can't stand running. Yes, I know
- 0:43Speaker 2: you're wondering what in the world does that mean. So
- 0:46Speaker 2: maybe it's because you don't love the impact that running
- 0:49Speaker 2: can have on your body, or because maybe it's just
- 0:51Speaker 2: not your idea of fun. Regardless, the sneaker is made
- 0:55Speaker 2: on top of a dynamic footbed, which is full of
- 0:58Speaker 2: these little itty bitty beads. They formed your foot and
- 1:01Speaker 2: ultimately they make the run easier on your legs.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Trust me, I know it sounds too good to be true.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I gave the Sneaker a good, good test, a good
- 1:10Speaker 2: few tests actually, since my time in Los Angeles, I've
- 1:13Speaker 2: probably logged about i'd say fifteen sixteen miles in it.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And the best way I can describe the sensation is
- 1:18Speaker 2: it feels as though you're walking on bubble wrap, but
- 1:22Speaker 2: the bubbles aren't popping. It's super comfortable, really cozy, really
- 1:26Speaker 2: great recovery sneaker. I'd say perfect for a five k
- 1:30Speaker 2: something around that distance, and it looks pretty cool. Now
- 1:34Speaker 2: what you're going to get out of this episode out
- 1:37Speaker 2: of our conversation again, the Sneaker is marketed toward recovery,
- 1:40Speaker 2: toward the runner who feels like it might not necessarily
- 1:43Speaker 2: always be their jam, and that's okay.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So we're talking about the hard stuff. We're talking about.
- 1:49Speaker 2: How we got into running, why running makes us feel good,
- 1:52Speaker 2: how we pushed through some of those runs that just
- 1:55Speaker 2: feel like absolute junk, and the appreciation we have for
- 2:00Speaker 2: the sport and bringing us together, and just this idea
- 2:04Speaker 2: that you can be from anywhere, love anyone, do anything,
- 2:07Speaker 2: and have a mutual connection with someone else that.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Runs, and that is pretty freakin' awesome.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I'm not going to make this intro super long Here
- 2:15Speaker 2: as always at Hurdle Podcast at Emily a Body. You
- 2:18Speaker 2: can connect with Christy Godso and Katherine Lee on Instagram
- 2:23Speaker 2: as well. It's just at Christy Godso and Catherine is
- 2:26Speaker 2: at Katie Lee c A T I E L I.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And that's it. With that, Let's get to hurdling.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Hey, guys, I know a lot of you. I'm super
- 2:51Speaker 2: stoked to be here with you guys today to chat
- 2:54Speaker 2: about running in honor of the launch of joy Ride.
- 2:58Speaker 2: If I don't know you, my name is Ema a Body.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I'm a writer and an editor. I'm also a podcaster,
- 3:03Speaker 2: so I wear a lot of hats, and today I'm
- 3:05Speaker 2: here wearing.
- 3:06Speaker 1: My podcast hat. I have a podcast called.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Hurdle for Hurdle, I talk to everyone from entrepreneurs to
- 3:12Speaker 2: CEOs about how they've gotten through tough times in their
- 3:15Speaker 2: life hurdles of sorts by leaning into wellness now sixty
- 3:19Speaker 2: six episodes in as of Monday. I had my own
- 3:24Speaker 2: personal hurdle moment which was kind of the jumping off
- 3:26Speaker 2: point for this, where I lost about seventy pounds in college.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Some of that through learning to eat better, but the
- 3:32Speaker 2: other half of that by learning to love running. You know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: running was really hard for me growing up. I didn't
- 3:37Speaker 2: make my JV volleyball team and high school because I
- 3:40Speaker 2: couldn't run a mile and under ten minutes. And now
- 3:43Speaker 2: I'm a seven time marathoner and training for Chicago. So
- 3:47Speaker 2: everyone has a different story when it comes to sport,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and I am very fortunate that mine has become part
- 3:56Speaker 2: of what I get to do every day for my career.
- 3:58Speaker 2: So today on our panel, we're gonna be talking about
- 4:01Speaker 2: runn We're gonna be chatting some good stuff. First off,
- 4:03Speaker 2: I've got Kirsty god So Nike Master Trainer Pyro Girl
- 4:07Speaker 2: Extraordinaire joining me, and then I've also got Catherine.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Lee come on over. So I'd love to.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Kick us off just by having the two of you
- 4:20Speaker 2: introduce yourself a little bit more and tell me about
- 4:22Speaker 2: your relationship with running.
- 4:23Speaker 1: What does that look like? So okay, God give me
- 4:26Speaker 1: the deeds many names, guys.
- 4:29Speaker 3: So I am obviously a trainer by my actual job
- 4:33Speaker 3: description and by my true passion, and I commonly reference
- 4:37Speaker 3: myself as a reluctant runner. So I think that's it's.
- 4:42Speaker 3: My journey with running has been really interesting. Actually, I
- 4:46Speaker 3: am from New Zealand, where I just I guess everyone runs.
- 4:49Speaker 3: There's nothing else to do. I think that's why people
- 4:51Speaker 3: always like, wow, why are people from New Zealand so athletic?
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'm like, have you been there?
- 4:54Speaker 3: There's really not much to do, so, you know, we
- 4:59Speaker 3: always had to do country and everything like that.
- 5:02Speaker 1: It was just like you just ran.
- 5:04Speaker 3: My brother and I did dirt biking for a long
- 5:07Speaker 3: time and I actually broke my knee really severely and
- 5:09Speaker 3: had a big knee operation at fifteen, so I don't
- 5:14Speaker 3: run a lot, and I was actually kind of sad.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Initially I was like, oh, that that kind of sucks.
- 5:19Speaker 3: But through my relationship with Nike, who I've been working
- 5:22Speaker 3: with since I was twenty two.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I'm still twenty two.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Just fy guys, if we're doing a U, that was
- 5:28Speaker 3: the only time I would run. And really my relationship
- 5:30Speaker 3: with running was Nike Run Club, and Nike Run Club
- 5:33Speaker 3: in New Zealand is huge and it's such an amazing community,
- 5:35Speaker 3: and you'd think maybe you were going out to run
- 5:37Speaker 3: five can and then I'd be like, yeah, we're actually
- 5:39Speaker 3: running twelve today, be like, oh, quite different. But for me,
- 5:43Speaker 3: I have to run with others or I have to
- 5:45Speaker 3: run to like really good playlists or like a good
- 5:47Speaker 3: podcast or something, because I kind of need that camaraderie
- 5:50Speaker 3: to be there because mentally it's tough for me to run.
- 5:53Speaker 3: It's more of like a deployment mission on my run,
- 5:56Speaker 3: whereas training love it. I'm like Burpie's let's go run,
- 6:00Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, I'm really stuck with my thoughts here.
- 6:02Speaker 3: So I like leaning into running because it's not easy
- 6:05Speaker 3: for me and I like to be humbled by it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And I also like that it.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Doesn't expect anything from me, so we're in an interesting relationship.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It doesn't expect anything from me.
- 6:16Speaker 4: What about you, Kat, I am a plus size model
- 6:19Speaker 4: and I hate running, just legit real stuff, like you know,
- 6:23Speaker 4: They're like, why do you hate running? I can't breathe.
- 6:26Speaker 4: It hurts, like there's so many reasons why. And never
- 6:30Speaker 4: ever in my life would I think I'd be here
- 6:32Speaker 4: with Nike talking about running like ever, that's like really
- 6:36Speaker 4: blows my mind.
- 6:38Speaker 5: I mean, I grew up always I think, wanting.
- 6:40Speaker 4: To be athletic and be into sport, but I think
- 6:42Speaker 4: because of my size and it just they never gave
- 6:45Speaker 4: me a chance. And I mean I would try out
- 6:48Speaker 4: for Batman do everything. I did, track, I did everything,
- 6:50Speaker 4: and like just never made it. And so I just
- 6:52Speaker 4: was like, forget, it doesn't make me feel good about myself.
- 6:55Speaker 4: So I'm just not going to do it. But then
- 6:57Speaker 4: going into college, you know, you just want to stay healthy.
- 6:59Speaker 5: And st stuff like that. I mean, free gym, you
- 7:01Speaker 5: know what I mean. So I just would go and
- 7:03Speaker 5: I would you know, run here and there. But it
- 7:05Speaker 5: wasn't my main thing. I still just really disliked it.
- 7:08Speaker 4: And it wasn't until I did the marathon with Nike
- 7:11Speaker 4: in October at Chicago where it really kind of changed
- 7:14Speaker 4: my perspective. I mean, I still have a struggle with it.
- 7:17Speaker 4: I think that's like completely normal. Everybody has a struggle
- 7:20Speaker 4: with it. But it's just kind of I get my
- 7:22Speaker 4: highs the feeling after I run, not really during or
- 7:24Speaker 4: before I run. It's after it and that I accomplished,
- 7:28Speaker 4: you know, like a mile, two miles, like any type
- 7:31Speaker 4: of running.
- 7:31Speaker 5: I'm like, yes, I did that, and that's what makes
- 7:33Speaker 5: me want to run more. But yes, I think it's
- 7:36Speaker 5: a constant struggle for me.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Congrats on CHICAO.
- 7:39Speaker 5: I just talk about the fact that you're like yeah,
- 7:40Speaker 5: and like I just ran a marathon. I mean it's
- 7:43Speaker 5: still shocking. It's still shocking to me.
- 7:45Speaker 4: I mean it just feels like yesterday and it's almost
- 7:47Speaker 4: it's been October. It's been a while, but like I
- 7:50Speaker 4: still can't believe I did that.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Do you use that a lot? Sorry not taking.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Your job, I'm just curious mode, But do you use
- 7:56Speaker 5: that a lot?
- 7:57Speaker 3: Like when you're in and now the type of workout
- 7:59Speaker 3: to be like you know, this kind of sucks, but
- 8:01Speaker 3: I did run a marathon, so I've got through us.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Like I can do.
- 8:05Speaker 4: It's so funny because after the marathon, I was like
- 8:07Speaker 4: I can do anything, like literally, like I said, okay, guys,
- 8:11Speaker 4: I was like telling like Jack, I was like, okay,
- 8:13Speaker 4: so what's next, A You're gonna make me into a boxer?
- 8:14Speaker 4: Now are we gonna do synchronized swimming? Like I can
- 8:17Speaker 4: do it at this point, like swimming, I mean like
- 8:22Speaker 4: I feel like I could literally do anything.
- 8:24Speaker 1: So I mean that's cool.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it's still a shock though that I did, like
- 8:29Speaker 4: you know that many miles, Like I don't even know
- 8:31Speaker 4: how I survived.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Well, you have so many emotions, like it probably looked
- 8:35Speaker 1: great doing it.
- 8:36Speaker 4: No, you know what they sent pictures on my face
- 8:38Speaker 4: were like like really like traumatic, like can.
- 8:41Speaker 5: This be over?
- 8:42Speaker 4: Situation I met with through so many emotions. I think
- 8:44Speaker 4: for the first like thirteen and a half miles, I
- 8:46Speaker 4: was very much like focused and like then what they
- 8:49Speaker 4: did is they put a billboard of me at the
- 8:51Speaker 4: seventeen miles, so I still had to like that was
- 8:53Speaker 4: my focus.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Okay, let me see a picture of myself, you.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Know, seventeen And then after that was like I'm angry,
- 8:59Speaker 4: I'm crying, and I'm happy, you know what I mean?
- 9:01Speaker 2: All the feelings at once, Yeah, all the feelings at once.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I love that that the both of you are saying
- 9:06Speaker 2: that it can suck sometimes, right, Like, it can be
- 9:09Speaker 2: really difficult sometimes. So when it feels like that, what
- 9:13Speaker 2: is it that keeps you going?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Right?
- 9:17Speaker 2: I mean I think we have that in common actually,
- 9:19Speaker 2: but really, like what gets you out on the days
- 9:21Speaker 2: that you don't want to do it? What gets you
- 9:23Speaker 2: out when you're when it's hot, when it's humid in
- 9:25Speaker 2: New York it was like one hundred and ten and
- 9:27Speaker 2: one hundred percent humidity this week.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So what makes you move when you don't want to
- 9:31Speaker 1: do it at all?
- 9:32Speaker 5: It's that after feeling.
- 9:33Speaker 4: I think that feeling when you've done that mile or
- 9:35Speaker 4: if you've done that really hard workout, you just I
- 9:38Speaker 4: don't think anybody cannot not agree that after they work out,
- 9:41Speaker 4: they feel good about themselves, right, So I think that's
- 9:44Speaker 4: kind of what you kind of aim for. But it's
- 9:47Speaker 4: definitely trying to stay motivated to get to that point.
- 9:49Speaker 4: And usually it's like for me bringing a friend or
- 9:52Speaker 4: like you know, I don't know. For me, it was
- 9:55Speaker 4: a marathon, like I cannot mess up.
- 9:57Speaker 5: I have to practice. So that was really kind of
- 10:00Speaker 5: my thing that got me out there.
- 10:02Speaker 3: What else gets I think that's cool that you said
- 10:03Speaker 3: about feeling too. It's not like you're driven to be like,
- 10:05Speaker 3: oh I've got to look a certain way or I
- 10:07Speaker 3: need to be in shape, but it's like you're going
- 10:09Speaker 3: for the feeling because like that's always been my.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Relationship with movement.
- 10:14Speaker 3: The I just know that, like exercise in general, like
- 10:18Speaker 3: movement is not gonna let me down.
- 10:19Speaker 5: So it doesn't matter what's happened to me.
- 10:21Speaker 3: That day, Like I could have had the worst day,
- 10:23Speaker 3: whatever's going on, And if I go for a run
- 10:26Speaker 3: or if I get to the gym, like I'm gonna
- 10:27Speaker 3: dramatically flip that, and I think it's just a great
- 10:30Speaker 3: way to catch some perspective and like it's funny, like
- 10:32Speaker 3: you might see me in New York running along like
- 10:34Speaker 3: the East River and I'm like, I might do an
- 10:37Speaker 3: occasional grunt like held your holder of me, and.
- 10:39Speaker 5: I'm like, oh, And it's like when I'm mad that
- 10:42Speaker 5: I have to stop, and then.
- 10:43Speaker 3: I'm like, wow, get over yourself. Cool you have to stop,
- 10:46Speaker 3: like you don't run. So I think it's interesting this
- 10:50Speaker 3: like ego check, Like you know, we always expect to
- 10:53Speaker 3: be so good at something. You know, I ask people
- 10:55Speaker 3: to do uncomfortable things all the time, so I have
- 10:57Speaker 3: to put myself in an uncomfortable place. And that for
- 11:00Speaker 3: me really is running because it's like a consistent motion
- 11:02Speaker 3: and I'm stuck there being like, oh, I don't particularly
- 11:05Speaker 3: love this. But I was talking to someone about the
- 11:08Speaker 3: other day. I was like, who loves paying tax? Like
- 11:09Speaker 3: let's just get to show a hands, no one right,
- 11:11Speaker 3: and we all do it. So like I think, if
- 11:13Speaker 3: we have the ability to move, it's just so selfish
- 11:17Speaker 3: to not celebrate your body in multiple different ways. And
- 11:20Speaker 3: you know, challenging myself with running, I do notice benefits
- 11:23Speaker 3: in my training, and I really notice mental benefits.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Like especially in New York.
- 11:26Speaker 3: It's just about that escapism, like getting off your phone
- 11:29Speaker 3: and learning to be okay with not being great at something,
- 11:32Speaker 3: and you know, you can't expect a promotion like the
- 11:35Speaker 3: first time that you do something. So no, I'm never
- 11:38Speaker 3: going to run a marathon, maybe a deconstructed one, but
- 11:42Speaker 3: I'm happy to go.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Out and run a fast five or something. You know, Yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 1: I feel that.
- 11:46Speaker 4: I think also it's like lowering your expectations, like you
- 11:49Speaker 4: can work out and maybe do half a mile or
- 11:51Speaker 4: a mile, you don't necessarily have to do this like
- 11:54Speaker 4: five mile thing. And then you know, just lowering your expectations.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I think also doesn't isn't so stressful for me to
- 12:01Speaker 4: be like, oh, I'm going to go out and.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Work out today, totally.
- 12:03Speaker 2: And I mean when I started running, I literally ran
- 12:05Speaker 2: a half mile every day for a month, and I
- 12:07Speaker 2: thought it was a full mile. But every day I
- 12:10Speaker 2: laced up, I was wearing really junkie workout clothes like
- 12:13Speaker 2: from Target, probably like cotton leggings and a Shane's white
- 12:16Speaker 2: V neck. I wasn't comfortable with how I looked or
- 12:20Speaker 2: how I felt on the road, but I would just
- 12:21Speaker 2: go out there for fourteen minutes every day. It took
- 12:24Speaker 2: me fourteen minutes to run a half mile. But by
- 12:26Speaker 2: the end of the summer that I was doing this,
- 12:28Speaker 2: I realized during that time period that I had started
- 12:31Speaker 2: to love something that used to make me feel so bad,
- 12:35Speaker 2: Like I used to feel so defeated by it.
- 12:37Speaker 1: So it didn't matter that it was just a half
- 12:39Speaker 1: a mile.
- 12:39Speaker 2: What mattered in that time period was that I found
- 12:43Speaker 2: an appreciation for something that made me feel better. And
- 12:46Speaker 2: that's what I think is so important across all runners.
- 12:49Speaker 2: It doesn't matter if you're running a half mile or
- 12:50Speaker 2: if you're running a marathon. What runners have in common
- 12:53Speaker 2: is just this love for the sport and how it
- 12:55Speaker 2: makes you feel that after effect that you're talking about
- 12:58Speaker 2: so again and going back to starting running and how
- 13:01Speaker 2: it can be super difficult.
- 13:03Speaker 1: How did you get to a place where you were.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Like, I'm going to run a marathon, because I think
- 13:08Speaker 2: that's a huge hurdle that some.
- 13:10Speaker 1: People can't like they stare at and they like run
- 13:12Speaker 1: the other way. They're like, I'm also with that.
- 13:13Speaker 4: I don't even know how I got to that to
- 13:16Speaker 4: be honest, because I just they sent me an email
- 13:18Speaker 4: and I was like, yes, I will do it.
- 13:20Speaker 5: It was just like a once in a lifetime.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Opportunity, and I'd be really stupid not to do it,
- 13:24Speaker 4: to have the training community to help me and tell
- 13:28Speaker 4: me somebody to show me how to run.
- 13:29Speaker 5: So I felt like I would be really stupid just
- 13:32Speaker 5: not to do it. And if I was.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Just going to just go with the flow, I don't
- 13:35Speaker 4: I don't know what to expect. And then when I
- 13:38Speaker 4: did the marathon, I really had to like search deep
- 13:40Speaker 4: down on why I hated running, and I really realized
- 13:44Speaker 4: that it was from school. And so you kind of
- 13:48Speaker 4: touched on that too. But like as a child, you
- 13:51Speaker 4: don't like, you don't dislike running. Kids are running around
- 13:54Speaker 4: all the time. They're not saying I hate running.
- 13:56Speaker 5: I don't want to run.
- 13:57Speaker 4: It was when I got into like elementary school in
- 13:59Speaker 4: middle school when they start timing your runs and they're
- 14:01Speaker 4: like you, if you don't make this ten minute mile.
- 14:04Speaker 5: You're overweight or like you're obese, and so we're like
- 14:08Speaker 5: so that.
- 14:08Speaker 4: In that mindset, it was just like I don't want
- 14:11Speaker 4: to do this, you know what I mean, that's just
- 14:13Speaker 4: I just can't do a ten minute mile, and so
- 14:15Speaker 4: it was very discouraging. And so I think that started
- 14:18Speaker 4: the trail to why I didn't like running, because it
- 14:21Speaker 4: just it never I never felt accepted. You know, they
- 14:24Speaker 4: don't teach you how to run in elementary school, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 4: middle school or high school. There's a specific way on
- 14:29Speaker 4: how to run. The shoes, everything is like, there's a
- 14:32Speaker 4: specific it's a sport, you know what I mean. And
- 14:34Speaker 4: so they just never taught me those things. And so
- 14:36Speaker 4: I come to find out I've been running wrong for
- 14:39Speaker 4: my whole life. I was walk running pretty much. I
- 14:43Speaker 4: didn't understand that specific shoes were gonna help me and
- 14:46Speaker 4: cause less pain.
- 14:47Speaker 5: How to breathe.
- 14:48Speaker 4: I always could not breathe, and so that was the
- 14:51Speaker 4: main thing, and it was just like, you know, they
- 14:53Speaker 4: taught me how to do that. So yeah, starting was
- 14:56Speaker 4: just I think it just really was at school, it
- 14:59Speaker 4: really discouraged me. Then it wasn't until literally last year
- 15:02Speaker 4: where it kind of changed.
- 15:03Speaker 1: My mindset on this idea of starting.
- 15:06Speaker 2: For someone that feels like they cannot but they don't
- 15:08Speaker 2: say that they won't, there's a big difference between those two, right, Yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 2: for someone who says that they can't. What would you
- 15:15Speaker 2: tell that person to help them start running?
- 15:18Speaker 4: You? Yeah, I mean I literally, I mean I hate hate.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I hated hated, hated, hated, hated running. So literally, if
- 15:25Speaker 4: I can do it, anybody can do it. And it's
- 15:27Speaker 4: that change of mindset. So I also noticed like instead
- 15:31Speaker 4: of we had a group of thirty four women, So
- 15:33Speaker 4: I was I had to decide, like, I have to
- 15:35Speaker 4: be on my own pace and I'm going to be last.
- 15:38Speaker 4: And I had to accept that these girls were running
- 15:40Speaker 4: three to five miles already. I was starting at one,
- 15:43Speaker 4: and so I had to accept that I'm not going
- 15:45Speaker 4: to be running with them, and I'm.
- 15:46Speaker 5: Going to be last.
- 15:47Speaker 4: And from there, I just realized, okay, I'm going to
- 15:50Speaker 4: do this. If I need to stop, that is okay,
- 15:52Speaker 4: you can stop. That's like not a big deal. Just
- 15:55Speaker 4: give your guys, you know, give yourself a point. I'm
- 15:56Speaker 4: going to stop from here to this tree, from this
- 15:59Speaker 4: tree to the stop by a jog.
- 16:00Speaker 5: And then that's how my my distance started to grow.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And then I'm you know, literally I think on our
- 16:06Speaker 4: weekend they start off with four miles.
- 16:08Speaker 5: I couldn't do it, and so I got really worried
- 16:10Speaker 5: and so I.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Started training on my own and I ran every day
- 16:13Speaker 4: and I made it like within a week, three miles
- 16:16Speaker 4: without stopping, just by practicing. So with that kind of
- 16:20Speaker 4: stop run, stop go kind of thing. So if I
- 16:23Speaker 4: can do it, anybody can do it, trust me, Like
- 16:25Speaker 4: you can ask them.
- 16:26Speaker 5: I always complained.
- 16:27Speaker 4: I was like, what the heck, I don't want to
- 16:28Speaker 4: do this today, and like I was like the number
- 16:31Speaker 4: one hater pretty much, and so yeah, if the hater
- 16:34Speaker 4: can do it, anybody can do it, right.
- 16:36Speaker 6: So what's your what's your gets started to Kirsty, Well,
- 16:39Speaker 6: I think yeah, just like you said, consistency is great
- 16:42Speaker 6: because you know, if you're hitting your run like once
- 16:44Speaker 6: a week or like once a month, like that's not
- 16:46Speaker 6: really going to give you much progress.
- 16:48Speaker 3: But if you're making it kind of like a continued effit.
- 16:51Speaker 3: I actually know how to hack myself. Like I'm competitive
- 16:54Speaker 3: with myself, so like I'll sign up to like some
- 16:58Speaker 3: of the challenges like on the Nike running it. Like
- 17:00Speaker 3: Joe and I were in Paris actually doing some stuff
- 17:02Speaker 3: with joy riding, so we just happened to we ran
- 17:05Speaker 3: like three days in a row and I was like, oh,
- 17:07Speaker 3: like my knee actually feels okay, consistency feels quite nice.
- 17:11Speaker 3: It's a good way to sight see in Paris and
- 17:13Speaker 3: get a tan at the same time. And so I
- 17:15Speaker 3: was like, oh, I've already done like twenty kilometers while
- 17:18Speaker 3: we're here, I should just join this like fifty kilometer
- 17:20Speaker 3: challenge for July on the nic app. And I was like,
- 17:23Speaker 3: it doesn't matter like what time I do it in
- 17:25Speaker 3: or whatever it is. It's just about maybe getting up
- 17:27Speaker 3: to fifty kilometers. And then the moment it became a
- 17:30Speaker 3: game that it's like always in the back of my head,
- 17:33Speaker 3: I was like great. I was like, I need to
- 17:35Speaker 3: get these kilometers, whereas before I wouldn't have kid list
- 17:38Speaker 3: like it didn't mean anything to me. So that's like
- 17:41Speaker 3: something fun for me. But ultimately I think what I
- 17:44Speaker 3: love with joy Ride and everything that's about is like
- 17:47Speaker 3: it's bringing back like using the word joy like thinking
- 17:50Speaker 3: about it, it's actually fun to just get outside and
- 17:53Speaker 3: move and be free and you can.
- 17:55Speaker 5: It's you know, when you are on a joy ride,
- 17:57Speaker 5: think about it.
- 17:57Speaker 3: If you're like on a bike because something you see
- 17:59Speaker 3: a cool shop, like cool stop, have a look, But
- 18:01Speaker 3: that's you know, that's this kind of relationship we're saying
- 18:04Speaker 3: you don't have to be the marathon runner.
- 18:06Speaker 1: You can be the reluctant runner.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Like, even if I think I start loving running, I'll
- 18:10Speaker 3: still call myself a reluctant runner. That's my favorite thing,
- 18:13Speaker 3: tagging Nike running and being like, I hate this because
- 18:16Speaker 3: runners are so beautiful and supportive of everyone that they
- 18:19Speaker 3: just like want to high five you as you're going
- 18:21Speaker 3: along if you're doing the worst run of your life.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Whereas if you're in the gym, you're like doing a
- 18:25Speaker 3: bad berpie and someone's like, oh my god, did you
- 18:28Speaker 3: see their burpie technique?
- 18:30Speaker 5: Like they're roasting you all the time.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Whereas like runners have this beautiful stands, like they're just
- 18:34Speaker 3: so proud and like so loving of this this like
- 18:38Speaker 3: habit that they have that they like want everyone to join.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And I think there's something like so seductive about that
- 18:44Speaker 3: with running.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I love the words seductive. It's sexy to run. Sexy
- 18:48Speaker 1: Bangs has its name for a reason.
- 18:51Speaker 2: I mean, and Kat, you kind of touched on this
- 18:53Speaker 2: a little bit earlier, that runners come in all shapes
- 18:56Speaker 2: and sizes, Right. I just wrote an article for a
- 18:58Speaker 2: runner's role, and I talk to four friends in New
- 19:00Speaker 2: York City, all of which are like very big guys
- 19:03Speaker 2: that are out there and running and making a major
- 19:05Speaker 2: impact in the local community.
- 19:07Speaker 1: And so for you, do you feel like you're making a.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Difference for the people that maybe follow you on social media,
- 19:13Speaker 2: that are reaching out to you and saying, I see
- 19:15Speaker 2: you do this.
- 19:15Speaker 1: So I feel like I am capable.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Now, Yeah, I got a lot of messages.
- 19:19Speaker 4: It was a really good you know, I'm glad I
- 19:21Speaker 4: was able to inspire a lot of people.
- 19:24Speaker 5: But when you're actually in the marathon, it's not just
- 19:26Speaker 5: for different sizes but ages too.
- 19:28Speaker 4: I was running in this old man literally walked power
- 19:31Speaker 4: walked like past me.
- 19:33Speaker 5: So it's like it's not you know, running doesn't discriminate.
- 19:36Speaker 4: And I think we see so much in media, you know,
- 19:40Speaker 4: really athletic people running, and so I think that we
- 19:43Speaker 4: people like me that are sized fourteen, we think that's
- 19:47Speaker 4: out of reach.
- 19:48Speaker 5: And you know, Nike's been.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Really great on just like providing, you know, showcasing different
- 19:52Speaker 4: sizes and trying to promote that. But it if I
- 19:56Speaker 4: can do it at a size fourteen, like anybody can
- 19:58Speaker 4: do it, you know what I mean, It's it shouldn't
- 20:01Speaker 4: be defined to a size or an age, you know
- 20:03Speaker 4: what I mean. It's it's for everybody, and it's not
- 20:06Speaker 4: about necessarily speed.
- 20:07Speaker 5: For some people, it's about just distance or just the fun.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Of doing it.
- 20:11Speaker 2: So yeah, and I mean curiosy. I look at you
- 20:14Speaker 2: and like you are pyro. You are jumping all over
- 20:17Speaker 2: the place. You can do like twenty things before I
- 20:19Speaker 2: can do one, generally speaking, So when it comes to running,
- 20:24Speaker 2: like what makes you want to take on this challenge
- 20:27Speaker 2: when you've already become such a queen of her own court.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I don't know if I want to say it's ego,
- 20:33Speaker 3: because I I don't desire to like have a like
- 20:36Speaker 3: have a great like.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Marathon time or like anything.
- 20:41Speaker 3: But actually, we did the fastest mile in New York,
- 20:43Speaker 3: and that was probably when I used to first start
- 20:45Speaker 3: thinking about I was like, you know, I still talk
- 20:48Speaker 3: in kilometers to be honest. I've lived in the States
- 20:50Speaker 3: now for like nearly five years, so I guess I
- 20:52Speaker 3: should really drop celsius and kilometers. But we were doing
- 20:56Speaker 3: the fastest mile and they were like, choose your time,
- 20:57Speaker 3: like predict what you think you're going to run it in,
- 20:59Speaker 3: and I was like, okay, like maybe seven.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Minutes would be good or do try go for it?
- 21:03Speaker 3: And then we ran it, and I remember just being like,
- 21:05Speaker 3: I'm just gonna follow Ashley Wilking, like I'm not gonna
- 21:08Speaker 3: try beat her, but as long as I can see
- 21:09Speaker 3: this perfect blonde ponytail, like that's gonna be a good time,
- 21:12Speaker 3: and she is fast, and like I still had no
- 21:15Speaker 3: real concept and I when we talk about pyro, I
- 21:18Speaker 3: thought my lungs were on fire. But I did, like
- 21:21Speaker 3: I did a six or six and I was like, okay,
- 21:24Speaker 3: that was cool, given I did no training for that.
- 21:26Speaker 3: But then I was immediately pissed at myself. I was like,
- 21:29Speaker 3: you know, you really could have gone under sex if
- 21:31Speaker 3: you just tried a bit more. And so then that
- 21:33Speaker 3: seed was in my head. I was like, Okay, what if,
- 21:36Speaker 3: like I cracked a six minute mile time, or what
- 21:38Speaker 3: if I did a different time.
- 21:39Speaker 5: So I have that side of my personality.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Which is a bit psycho, and then I have the
- 21:44Speaker 3: other side that's just like I don't care about the logistics.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I just want to be out here, to be out here.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Maybe I'm going out with the intention of running what
- 21:50Speaker 3: feels like five k and I run three. Maybe I
- 21:52Speaker 3: run a surprise eight but the point being just that
- 21:56Speaker 3: I'm out there and then I'm not harassing myself about
- 21:59Speaker 3: like a split or like you know, times metrics. Just
- 22:03Speaker 3: just feel my foot and be guided by how my
- 22:05Speaker 3: heart rate feels, and be guided if I have some
- 22:07Speaker 3: escapism from my brain. So so I just trained for
- 22:10Speaker 3: three months to run a six h six mile, So
- 22:12Speaker 3: you are crushing. But I think the thing that's important
- 22:15Speaker 3: to point out also is just again going back to
- 22:18Speaker 3: this idea that everyone's run is different, and like even
- 22:22Speaker 3: if you're running with the group, you still get the
- 22:23Speaker 3: opportunity to feel the run yourself. And I think that
- 22:27Speaker 3: that feeling again, like speaking to to what Kat was saying,
- 22:31Speaker 3: is what continually brings you back to running.
- 22:34Speaker 2: It's how you feel after and it's kind of conquering
- 22:37Speaker 2: the steps along the way, right, because like what if
- 22:40Speaker 2: you're running a five k, Like where's your head at
- 22:42Speaker 2: at mile one?
- 22:44Speaker 6: Oh?
- 22:44Speaker 2: I hate the first three, the first the whole Oh
- 22:47Speaker 2: so the first three before it's.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Like one three or just the worst.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Okay, so just the point one of the where we're
- 22:53Speaker 3: good at getting there, Like I can turn up to
- 22:55Speaker 3: the run, I'm like great, I put my little math
- 22:56Speaker 3: William best on has my AirPods in it and my
- 23:00Speaker 3: apartment key how New York, you know, And then so
- 23:02Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm ready for this. But the first like
- 23:04Speaker 3: three kilometers, I'm like, this is awful. And then I
- 23:07Speaker 3: might only be planning to run three or five kilometers.
- 23:10Speaker 1: But by after three kilometers, that's when it starts to
- 23:12Speaker 1: feel good and I'm like, oh, first kind of sexy here.
- 23:15Speaker 3: I'm like, maybe I'm going to run longer, but I
- 23:17Speaker 3: just know if I can get through that first three.
- 23:19Speaker 3: So for me, generally, I try not to run like
- 23:21Speaker 3: under three kilometers because then it's.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Just like not enjoyable.
- 23:24Speaker 3: But if I at least run four, I know there
- 23:26Speaker 3: was like a kilometer of enjoyment, just oneometer because one Yeah.
- 23:30Speaker 5: For me, it's just I don't know.
- 23:32Speaker 4: I just anything like one mile a half mile that
- 23:35Speaker 4: that's good for me. I mean, I don't know, I'm
- 23:38Speaker 4: just getting out there.
- 23:38Speaker 1: To me, it's just I think the.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Cool thing is too like you forget, like other people
- 23:43Speaker 3: see you and it inspires them in one way or another.
- 23:46Speaker 3: It's like, you know, when you see someone that's out
- 23:47Speaker 3: there picking up trash just to be like a good person,
- 23:50Speaker 3: You're like damn, like you can't help, but like then
- 23:53Speaker 3: be like I should do that or like, so I
- 23:55Speaker 3: think running school because you can't.
- 23:56Speaker 1: You can't avoid it.
- 23:57Speaker 3: It's one of the best ways to see any city,
- 24:00Speaker 3: like when you travel. For me, I'm super geographically challenged,
- 24:03Speaker 3: so like I like to run to try and figure
- 24:05Speaker 3: out like where I am. Like people will be like, yeah,
- 24:08Speaker 3: just go north at Pamba and might excuse me.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Like what I would do is being like you have
- 24:12Speaker 1: no idea.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Even when I look at apartment say like its great
- 24:14Speaker 3: light faces north, I'm like, I'm like what does that mean?
- 24:18Speaker 3: So running is like my way to like figure out
- 24:20Speaker 3: where I am and like great way to find good
- 24:22Speaker 3: coffee spots, you know, good way to meet people.
- 24:25Speaker 2: As we start to wind down, what I want to
- 24:27Speaker 2: know from the both of you is on the days
- 24:29Speaker 2: that it's tough, what is one thing that you implement
- 24:32Speaker 2: to make the run more enjoyable.
- 24:36Speaker 4: I think running is such an impressive sport, meaning that
- 24:39Speaker 4: people don't run every day, So when somebody says I
- 24:41Speaker 4: ran on mile today, it's still impressive.
- 24:43Speaker 5: You know that.
- 24:43Speaker 4: So for me to get me out there to make
- 24:46Speaker 4: it enjoyable, I go to like favorite scenic parts that
- 24:49Speaker 4: I like, or I run with somebody For me, I
- 24:52Speaker 4: don't necessarily now that I've done the marathon, I don't
- 24:54Speaker 4: train with music like I don't.
- 24:56Speaker 5: It doesn't I don't get a.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Stimulated I'd rather listen to a podcast or talk to
- 25:00Speaker 4: somebody while I run. And so I think running with
- 25:03Speaker 4: somebody is a great way of doing it, doing little
- 25:07Speaker 4: running parties, you know what, with your friends.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that sounds like something you guys both would really do.
- 25:13Speaker 2: A running party. A running party, I mean, I throw
- 25:16Speaker 2: a running party. I'm running a pizza half marathon next weekend.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I don't even know what that means. We can talk
- 25:21Speaker 1: about that's fine.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Oh, I do agree like running with people.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Like sometimes I feel like I've become like the you
- 25:28Speaker 3: know how your app could send you like a lot
- 25:30Speaker 3: and be like are we running today? And like that's
- 25:32Speaker 3: my favorite text to like send sometimes with my friends.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Or like if you're going to run from your own
- 25:37Speaker 3: apartments to like meet somewhere in the middle, like that's
- 25:39Speaker 3: always a good thing. Or my goal is I'm like
- 25:42Speaker 3: run far from home because then you have to like
- 25:44Speaker 3: run back. We'll get on the city bike either or
- 25:47Speaker 3: but yeah, like I think phoning in a friend like
- 25:49Speaker 3: being it together.
- 25:50Speaker 1: It's fun when you get to share that moment with
- 25:52Speaker 1: someone else.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Like I said, I have my sights set on Chicago.
- 25:56Speaker 2: What is on your radar doesn't have to be a race,
- 25:59Speaker 2: but where do you see your relationship with running taking
- 26:02Speaker 2: you in the next few months or the next year.
- 26:06Speaker 3: I would like to consistently be running, like twice a week.
- 26:09Speaker 3: That'd be a nice place for me around the other
- 26:11Speaker 3: training I'm doing.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I like it. It's a little maintenance goal.
- 26:14Speaker 4: But I got a lot of messages from just people
- 26:18Speaker 4: that were inspired to run but just didn't know how
- 26:20Speaker 4: to start. So instead of messaging them like the long
- 26:23Speaker 4: because it's a long process of explaining it, I decided
- 26:26Speaker 4: that I wanted to start and I hate running running
- 26:28Speaker 4: club and which is just for people, just for everybody,
- 26:32Speaker 4: people who just have kids or that are you know, curvier,
- 26:36Speaker 4: or just want to learn how to run. So hopefully
- 26:39Speaker 4: in the next couple of months that will happen. I'm
- 26:41Speaker 4: waiting for the heat to die down, because that's also
- 26:43Speaker 4: a way.
- 26:44Speaker 2: People don't want to run because it's too you know
- 26:45Speaker 2: what I mean, A few more rapid fires to finish
- 26:49Speaker 2: us off. These are your favorite thing about speaking in public?
- 26:52Speaker 2: I'm sure okay. Favorite Nike running shoe the structures.
- 26:56Speaker 5: I actually really love Freeze because I like being closely ground.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Okay. Favorite distance to run past five? Five k or
- 27:04Speaker 1: five k.
- 27:06Speaker 5: One like a little twenty minute run.
- 27:11Speaker 1: What time of day do you like running best? Evening morning?
- 27:15Speaker 1: Early morning.
- 27:17Speaker 2: One song on your running playlist all out too? If
- 27:20Speaker 2: you have two that stand out?
- 27:22Speaker 3: Oh, just Us by DJ Khalied okay, and then actually
- 27:26Speaker 3: I'm on one with DJ Khalid.
- 27:28Speaker 1: And Drake DJ Khalid for Kirsty. It's a great album.
- 27:30Speaker 5: Guys, do the Drake playlist.
- 27:32Speaker 4: But I also listen what was it that podcast U
- 27:35Speaker 4: Vanish or something like that that was really good?
- 27:37Speaker 2: Podcasts are good and last, but not least, one word
- 27:41Speaker 2: to describe how you feel when you're done running. Oh,
- 27:46Speaker 2: that's how you feel like a boss.
- 27:52Speaker 5: It's not one would I'm like legs up the wool.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Awesome. Thanks you guys so much for setting down with me.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Thank you, bag, and there you have it.
- 28:03Speaker 2: You know, I don't usually do outros, but I think
- 28:05Speaker 2: it's really important just to reiterate that there's not one
- 28:08Speaker 2: type of runner, you know.
- 28:10Speaker 1: During this conversation.
- 28:11Speaker 2: We are three very different women who have three very
- 28:14Speaker 2: different goals, who all enjoy getting out there, lacing up
- 28:19Speaker 2: and having good times. So, if you like this conversation,
- 28:22Speaker 2: if you want to hear more like it, if you
- 28:23Speaker 2: have any input on who you want to hear on hurdle,
- 28:27Speaker 2: make sure you give me a shout again. It's at
- 28:28Speaker 2: Emily Abadi at Hurdle Podcast. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you
- 28:34Speaker 2: guys next time
