- 0:12Hello friends, It is shown here. Thank you for pressing on play.
- 0:17Thank you for bringing me into your day.
- 0:21It's it's a little bit tricky trying to work out well, how
- 0:25much do people really want to hear about Sean waffling on
- 0:27about Sean? But how am I going?
- 0:30I'm going really well. It is this tricky thing, isn't
- 0:33it, when you have a family. I have three boys, three teenage
- 0:36boys, and my eldest has just got his first car and he's driven
- 0:41off for a week of camp. And you farewell these kids that
- 0:44you love, but they're not kids anymore and they're all grown up
- 0:47and ah, life is just a whole series of moments of letting go,
- 0:52isn't it? And so I don't know whether I'm
- 0:56getting better at letting go, but I'm getting more practise at
- 0:59letting go. So today we let go, don't we,
- 1:02friends? We try not to hold on too
- 1:04tightly to things in our lives. And that is a good parallel to
- 1:08our reading as today we will continue to read the story where
- 1:12things will go a little awry and well, Samuel and God just have
- 1:17to not hold too tightly to what kingship might look like.
- 1:21And the fact that, oh, these human kings are going to make a
- 1:24mess of things. So we see how that starts to
- 1:28play out today. So join me, friends, as we put
- 1:32down our lives. Our letting goes for a moment
- 1:35and we come before our living God and we hear what he has to
- 1:38share with us in First Samuel chapter 15.
- 1:53One day, Samuel said to Saul, it was the Lord who told me to
- 1:57anoint you as the king of his people, Israel.
- 2:00Now listen to this message from the Lord.
- 2:02This is what the Lord of Heaven's armies has declared.
- 2:06I have decided to settle accounts with the nation of
- 2:10Amalek for opposing Israel when they came from Egypt.
- 2:14Now go and completely destroy the entire Amalekite nation.
- 2:20Men, women, children, babies, cattle, sheep, goats, camels and
- 2:25donkeys. So Saul mobilised his army at
- 2:29Tulam. There were 200,000 soldiers from
- 2:33Israel and 10,000 men from Judah.
- 2:37Then Saul and his army went to a town of the Amalekites and lay
- 2:41in wait in the valley. Soul sent this warning to the
- 2:45Kenites. Move away from where the
- 2:48Amalekites live, or you will die with them.
- 2:51For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they
- 2:54came up from Egypt. So the Kenites packed up and
- 2:58left. Then Saul slaughtered the
- 3:01Amalekites from Havilah all the way to shore east of Egypt.
- 3:07He captured Agag, the Amalekite king, but completely destroyed
- 3:12everyone else. Saul and his men spared Agag's
- 3:16life and kept the best of the sheep and goats, the cattle, the
- 3:20fat calves and the lambs, everything in fact that appealed
- 3:23to them. They destroyed only what was
- 3:25worthless or of poor quality. Then the Lord said to Samuel, I
- 3:31am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal
- 3:37to me and has refused to obey my command.
- 3:41Samuel was so deeply moved when he heard this that he cried out
- 3:45to the Lord all night. Early the next morning, Samuel
- 3:50went to find Saul. Someone told him Saul went to
- 3:53the town of Carmel to set up a monument to himself.
- 3:57Then he went on to Gilgal. When Samuel finally found him,
- 4:02Saul greeted him cheerfully. May the Lord bless you, he said.
- 4:06I've carried out the Lord's command.
- 4:09Then what is all the bleating of sheep and goats and the loving
- 4:13of Catali here? Samuel demanded.
- 4:17It's true that the army spared the best of the sheep, goats and
- 4:20cattle, Saw admitted. But they are going to sacrifice
- 4:24them to the Lord your God. We have destroyed everything
- 4:27else then Samuel said to Saul. Stop.
- 4:31Listen to what the Lord told me last night.
- 4:34What did he tell you? Sol asked, and Samuel told him.
- 4:39Although you may think little of yourself, are you not the leader
- 4:44of the tribes of Israel? The Lord has anointed you, King
- 4:48of Israel, and the Lord sent you on a mission and told you go and
- 4:54completely destroy the Sinners, the Amalekites, until they are
- 4:59all dead. Why haven't you obeyed the Lord?
- 5:03Why did you rush for the plunder and do what was evil in the
- 5:07Lord's sight? But I did obey the Lord, Saul
- 5:11insisted. I carried out the mission he
- 5:13gave me. I brought back King Agag, but I
- 5:17destroyed everyone else. Then my troops brought in the
- 5:20best of the sheep, goats, cattle and plunder to sacrifice to the
- 5:25Lord your God in Gilgal. But Sammy replied, what is more
- 5:30pleasing to the Lord? Your burnt offerings and
- 5:33sacrifices, or your obedience to His voice.
- 5:38Listen. Obedience is better than
- 5:40sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of
- 5:45Rams. Rebellion is as sinful as
- 5:48witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshipping idols.
- 5:53So because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he has
- 5:58rejected you as King. Then Saul admitted to Samuel.
- 6:03Yes, I have sinned. I've disobeyed your instructions
- 6:07and the Lord's command. For I was afraid of the people
- 6:11and what they demanded. But now please forgive my sin
- 6:15and come back with me so that I may worship the Lord.
- 6:19But Samuel replied, I will not go back with you since you have
- 6:24rejected the Lord's command. He has rejected you as king of
- 6:28Israel. As Samuel turned to go, Saul
- 6:32tried to hold him back and tore the hem of his robe.
- 6:35And Samuel said to him, the Lord has torn the Kingdom of Israel
- 6:40from you today, and has given it to someone else, one who is
- 6:44better than you. And he who was the glory of
- 6:48Israel will not lie, nor will he change his mind, For he is not
- 6:53human that he should change his mind.
- 6:56Then Saul pleaded again. I know I have sinned, but please
- 7:00at least honour me before the elders of my people and before
- 7:04Israel by coming back with me so that I may worship the Lord your
- 7:08God. So Samuel finally agreed and
- 7:12went back with him, and Saul worshipped the Lord.
- 7:16Then Samuel said, Bring King Agag to me.
- 7:21A gag full of hope. For he thought, Surely the worst
- 7:25is over, and I have been spared. But Samuel said, as your sword
- 7:30has killed the sons of many mothers, now your mother will be
- 7:34childless. And Samuel cut a gag to pieces
- 7:39before the Lord at Gilgal. And Samuel went home to Rama,
- 7:43and Saul returned to his house at Gibeah of Saul.
- 7:47Samuel never went to meet with Saul again, but he mourned
- 7:51constantly for him, And the Lord was sorry he had ever made Saul
- 7:56king of Israel. Lord has read this story.
- 8:11So much of it doesn't make sense to our modern ears.
- 8:15But in the midst of it all, we hear Samuel and his prayer that
- 8:20you want our obedience more than what we sacrificed to you, and
- 8:24that you call for us to have hearts in submission to you
- 8:31rather than any other gift we could give.
- 8:34Salary come to you, we submit to you.
- 8:41We offer our hearts to you that you would shape us so that we
- 8:45would live lives of obedience to what you call us to do.
- 8:52Lord, may we be your humble and faithful servants as we go about
- 8:59today. Lord, continue to mould us in
- 9:03just the way you want us to be. Continue to use us to shape and
- 9:10to extend your Kingdom so that your interests are always at the
- 9:16forefront of our minds and our motivations.
- 9:22Thank you that you choose to engage with this world and
- 9:25engage here with us, your people.
- 9:28We are humbled and amazed that you, the unchanging God of the
- 9:34universe, comes to us and engages with us.
- 9:39So we offer ourselves to you as that sacrifice, all in the name
- 9:43of Jesus. I'm in.
