- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Jim Moore of the Yukon Football Coaches Show
- 0:02Speaker 1: continues on word and upward. It's FIU Florida International at
- 0:07Speaker 1: the Rent Saturday three point thirty kickoff. Be there early
- 0:10Speaker 1: and get in the stadium. Get behind these guys Ukon
- 0:13Speaker 1: now trying to win a couple games in a row
- 0:15Speaker 1: here and get the four and two as we get
- 0:17Speaker 1: to the break in the football season and the bybe
- 0:20Speaker 1: week well coach. The FIU team comes in off a
- 0:24Speaker 1: win over FAU. They had won thirty eight to twenty
- 0:28Speaker 1: eight win. That's a good win for them. They ran
- 0:30Speaker 1: the ball for two hundred and twenty four yards in
- 0:32Speaker 1: that game. Is that something that gets your attention right away?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Right away? It gets it right away, you know. And
- 0:38Speaker 2: it's not only their great running back. I'm not going
- 0:40Speaker 2: to pronounce his name, but I know his number and
- 0:43Speaker 2: I know he's a damn good player. But it's also
- 0:45Speaker 2: their quarterbacks ability to make plays in the open field.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So yeah, that gets your attention immediately. You know, teams
- 0:51Speaker 2: running the ball, playing keep away some of them. We've
- 0:54Speaker 2: got to be able to We've got to be able
- 0:55Speaker 2: to stop. We've got to be able to get him
- 0:57Speaker 2: in the third and passing situation. So at least we
- 1:00Speaker 2: you know, we can make him maybe a little bit
- 1:02Speaker 2: more predictable than if they're in third and four, third
- 1:04Speaker 2: and five, third and six all the time.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Keewan Jenkins is the quarterback. He wears number one. He's
- 1:09Speaker 1: left handed.
- 1:10Speaker 2: We're going to get that.
- 1:11Speaker 1: We're going to get that in a second. But they
- 1:13Speaker 1: throw for one hundred and seventy five a game, which
- 1:15Speaker 1: is not a huge number, but the fact that he
- 1:17Speaker 1: can run with the football and he can throw it
- 1:21Speaker 1: that is a problem.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, anytime you've got a dual threat quarterback,
- 1:25Speaker 2: it puts additional stress on your defense. And you know,
- 1:28Speaker 2: his runs, he's a good runner. Just if they have
- 1:31Speaker 2: design runs, he can do that. But what's really impressive
- 1:33Speaker 2: is when he drops back to pass and nothing's there
- 1:36Speaker 2: and he's able to slip out from the pass rush
- 1:39Speaker 2: and get into the open field, and his speed and
- 1:41Speaker 2: his elusiveness is what's really impressive. You made some really
- 1:43Speaker 2: good plays, big plays with his legs and passing situations.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Now he's also been able to run it, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: on design runs or quarterback keeps or options or zone
- 1:53Speaker 2: reads and things like that. So you know we played
- 1:56Speaker 2: against him, so we know this kid. And it was
- 1:57Speaker 2: two years ago and he was young and he impressive then.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And now he's a guy. This guy a couple of
- 2:02Speaker 2: years under his belt and he's more mature and more physical,
- 2:05Speaker 2: big or stronger, faster, has experienced. So he's a heck
- 2:09Speaker 2: of a challenge. He's a damn good player.
- 2:12Speaker 1: They're a team that takes chances. They're on fourth down,
- 2:14Speaker 1: they've gone thirteen times and they've made it eight times,
- 2:18Speaker 1: so sixty one percent there. That's that gets my attention.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And defensively in the red zone against the opposition, they've
- 2:27Speaker 1: held the opposition out of the end zone let's say
- 2:30Speaker 1: eleven out of eighteen times, So that's pretty good number
- 2:33Speaker 1: right there.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah. I think they're sixteenth in the country in red
- 2:36Speaker 2: zone defense, and that is an important statistic obviously. And
- 2:41Speaker 2: you know, field goals are one thing, but stopping touchdowns
- 2:44Speaker 2: is huge and they're really good at it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: So if you look at their ability on fourth down,
- 2:50Speaker 1: is when you're preparing for a team like that, are
- 2:53Speaker 1: you just expecting they're going to go on fourth down?
- 2:55Speaker 1: You're not even thinking I'm sending that punt return unit
- 2:57Speaker 1: in No, we you got to wait and see what
- 2:59Speaker 1: they're doing. And because they love to go on fourth down.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Well, it even affects third down. Mike. That's what's interesting
- 3:05Speaker 2: is that, depending on field position, you might have a
- 3:08Speaker 2: third and seven and you think it's an automatic kind
- 3:12Speaker 2: of pass down. But knowing that they're a team that'll
- 3:14Speaker 2: go for it on fourth down, if they get it
- 3:16Speaker 2: to like fourth and two, you know, maybe it's not
- 3:18Speaker 2: an automatic pass down, you know, and so you kind
- 3:21Speaker 2: of have to play third down a little bit differently.
- 3:22Speaker 2: You have to sequence it, you have to say, well,
- 3:25Speaker 2: for them in this situation, third down is not a
- 3:30Speaker 2: get get them stopped and they're gonna punt or kick
- 3:32Speaker 2: a field goal. It's get them stopped. But if it's
- 3:34Speaker 2: third or fourth and two, fourth and one, even fourth
- 3:36Speaker 2: and three, depending on field position, they may go for it.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So it demands kind of a different philosophy of defense
- 3:42Speaker 2: on those third down plays that gets you to the
- 3:46Speaker 2: fourth down situation.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Just about a minute or so left with Jim Moore
- 3:50Speaker 1: here in this segment, I wanted to mention their secondary Jim,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and I know you appreciate defense. They got four guys
- 3:57Speaker 1: back there that have interceptions and they're this guy Josiah
- 4:02Speaker 1: mcgrew's got an interception. He's a freshman. Shamir Sterling, he's
- 4:06Speaker 1: a red shirt freshman, a guy named mister Clark, number
- 4:09Speaker 1: twenty seven. He's got four breakups and an interception. He's
- 4:12Speaker 1: only a red shirt sophomore. I mean they got some
- 4:15Speaker 1: young guys who know how to play football back there.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and they played tighte man coverage and they
- 4:20Speaker 2: play with a lot of confidence and their coaches have
- 4:23Speaker 2: a lot of confidence in them. And then you know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: you didn't mention one guy that I'm gonna mention because
- 4:27Speaker 2: I know his family very very well. Brian Blades. Yeah,
- 4:31Speaker 2: oh yeah, you remember Benny Blades. Oh yeah, and the
- 4:35Speaker 2: whole Blades family is Brian Blades and Brian Senior. I
- 4:38Speaker 2: mean you talk about football royalty, especially in South Florida,
- 4:44Speaker 2: you say Blades, yepeople respect it. So yeah, I mean
- 4:48Speaker 2: in that kid, he can ball, he can play. So
- 4:51Speaker 2: it's a hell of a secondary And like I said,
- 4:53Speaker 2: they play a lot of tight man coverage, so we're
- 4:55Speaker 2: gonna have to figure out ways to try to beat man.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be fun to watch, I'll tell you that.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yukon FIU getting after it on Saturday, three thirties to kick.
- 5:04Speaker 1: But let's get in there early, get off the barbecue
- 5:07Speaker 1: and get in and wash up. Just take on the Panthers.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Thanks to Jim Mora, We'll be back with more. We're
- 5:12Speaker 1: going to meet a couple of players, including Chris Freeman,
- 5:14Speaker 1: who kicked the game winner last weekend at Buffalo, as
- 5:17Speaker 1: we continue on the Yukon Football Coaches Show here on
- 5:20Speaker 1: Liar Field,
