- 21:10Speaker 2: Them down on the lot letter, I could kiss you.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Of course, that's mister product. The man who impersonated me
- 21:16Speaker 4: can't be a member of Ruxtas gangs. Too coincidental. He
- 21:18Speaker 4: was hired for the job.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Because of the Remember, find him and sweat him and
- 21:22Speaker 5: he'll tell you the story.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Find him.
- 21:23Speaker 5: I have to do that for you to tri Central Casting.
- 21:26Speaker 4: Oh wait a minute, No, not a Central Casting ducks
- 21:31Speaker 4: wouldn't leave a loose end like him flapping. No, I
- 21:36Speaker 4: think it's quite likely, mister prod, you'll find my impersonator
- 21:41Speaker 4: in your more.
- 21:54Speaker 7: Was a lesson pick up with the perfect bear.

- 22:05Speaker 2: It is the man good. He might be, Queen, and
- 22:07Speaker 2: I might have murdered him.
- 22:09Speaker 7: And you better call my father inspect the Queen and
- 22:11Speaker 7: New York Father.
- 22:12Speaker 4: I wasted too much time already. No, we're picking up

- 23:14Speaker 2: In there? Harry with three bullets in him?
- 23:26Speaker 4: Apparently nothing touched on the body? Queen dollar seventy nine
- 23:30Speaker 4: cents a small change. Wallet's up with.
- 23:32Speaker 7: Fifties and one hundred?
- 23:34Speaker 2: Said it wasn't robbery, No it wasn't. Well I don't
- 23:36Speaker 2: get it.

- 23:58Speaker 7: Oh have you Harry?
- 24:00Speaker 5: Ruffie came out here. I hadn't seen him for years,
- 24:03Speaker 5: took over my professional name, my home, threatened my life
- 24:06Speaker 5: if I didn't.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Do just as he said. He killed that fellow Google
- 24:09Speaker 2: all right, and.
- 24:10Speaker 5: He killed that young actor. He hard to impersonate, you, queen.
- 24:13Speaker 5: My brother was a vicious killer, and I'd like to
- 24:15Speaker 5: shake the hand of the man who rid the world
- 24:17Speaker 5: of him.
- 24:17Speaker 4: Makes nice listening, Harry, But just the same, you had
- 24:19Speaker 4: a doan good motive.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Joey.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Got that fellow your taste or get.
- 24:23Speaker 7: Him marry you?
- 24:24Speaker 8: Well if it isn't Detective McLagan.
- 24:26Speaker 5: So I impersonated after Okay, but that's all Max.
- 24:29Speaker 4: When you kidnapped Miss Porter and myself another chard against you. Incidentally,
- 24:34Speaker 4: you were one worried tough guy. Why I got a
- 24:37Speaker 4: worrisome disposition, mister queen, you rubbed RUFFI out.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Max.
- 24:40Speaker 4: You didn't like to steal. We're getting too smart, or
- 24:42Speaker 4: you'll prove it well, one of you three pulled this job,
- 24:45Speaker 4: and I will prove it. It takes me a year.
- 24:46Speaker 2: He didn't take that long.
- 24:47Speaker 5: Eh, What mister queen, what did you say if he
- 24:50Speaker 5: said what I think he said?
- 24:52Speaker 2: Is NICKI now I know it's one of these three
- 24:54Speaker 2: committed the murder.
- 25:06Speaker 7: And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the mystery. Now
- 25:14Speaker 7: suppose you home arm chair detectives.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Now a guest in the studio can pay solutions thick
- 25:19Speaker 4: you would you introduce our guests, Ladies.
- 25:21Speaker 8: And gentlemen, Our guest armchair detective tonight is McCullough, Saint
- 25:24Speaker 8: John's managing editor of Radio Mirror magazine.
- 25:28Speaker 7: Saint John, not of the adler Roger Saint John.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Saint John. Yes, I'll have to plead guilty to that one.
- 25:34Speaker 9: She is my mother.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Well, having such a famous mystery writer for her mother
- 25:37Speaker 4: is any help? You may prove better than the run
- 25:40Speaker 4: of the armchair sleuth, Right, Mac.
- 25:42Speaker 9: Don't put me on the spot. Allery. Any observer of
- 25:45Speaker 9: crime knows that things are not always what they appear
- 25:47Speaker 9: to be. I learned that much in six hex fat
- 25:50Speaker 9: years as a police reporter.
- 25:51Speaker 2: On the New York Mirror.
- 25:52Speaker 7: That experience ought to be very helpful is to put
- 25:55Speaker 7: this right up your alley. All right, mister Saint John's,
- 25:58Speaker 7: tell me who do you think committed the murder and
- 26:00Speaker 7: then tell me why.
- 26:01Speaker 9: I think Harry Roselle.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It looks like my man, I.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Mean, Harry Roselle committed the murder and killed Ruffie Rock.
- 26:08Speaker 2: That's the way I see it.
- 26:10Speaker 9: I think mister Roselle is really a Roughie Rock and
- 26:13Speaker 9: his brother was a front point.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Now I'm not sure I follow.
- 26:17Speaker 4: You think mister Harry rosel is the criminal and Max
- 26:20Speaker 4: Roselle the one who lists the one who slurred his eyes.
- 26:24Speaker 7: That was merely a front matter for the executive behind
- 26:26Speaker 7: the scene. That's the way I see it.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I see.
- 26:29Speaker 7: Now, do you have any concrete bit of evidence? One bit?
- 26:34Speaker 9: Uh? You mentioned at the police station that mister Roselle
- 26:37Speaker 9: could have taken lessons from a speech.
- 26:40Speaker 7: That's a evidence twitter, Thank you very much, missus Ah John's.
- 26:43Speaker 4: You'll find out in just a moment whether your institution
- 26:45Speaker 4: is the correct one.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Now here is.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Paul Masterson, what's the world picture? What it is? Today?
- 26:51Speaker 3: It becomes increasingly apparent that we must raise our level
- 26:54Speaker 3: of citizenship. With this in mind, the American Heritage campaign
- 26:58Speaker 3: started last September seventeenth, the day of the one hundred
- 27:01Speaker 3: and sixtieth anniversary.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Of our Constitution.
- 27:03Speaker 3: The Freedom Train, carrying more than one hundred of our
- 27:06Speaker 3: nation's most famous original documents, is traveling throughout the nation
- 27:10Speaker 3: with the message of citizenship for.
- 27:12Speaker 2: All to join in. Freedom demands that each of us
- 27:15Speaker 2: carry out.
- 27:16Speaker 3: His duties as a citizen, to vote so that the
- 27:19Speaker 3: best man is placed in public office, to take an
- 27:22Speaker 3: interest in public issues, and participate in community, state, and
- 27:25Speaker 3: national affairs. Let's all actively support our American heritage. Remember,
- 27:31Speaker 3: freedom is everybody's job.
- 27:41Speaker 7: Give me a chance.
- 27:42Speaker 4: Broderick, you yours calf remark when you examine the body
- 27:44Speaker 4: that the man's money was untouched. A wallet full of
- 27:47Speaker 4: fifties one hundred, you said, And you said it was
- 27:49Speaker 4: a dollar seventy nine cents in small chain.
- 27:51Speaker 2: WHA yes, queis so what if.
- 27:53Speaker 4: This were really the body of roughly rucks, you'd have
- 27:56Speaker 4: found three dollars and seventy nine centent change. Right, Nick Proderick,
- 28:00Speaker 4: The underworld and the police in the East all know
- 28:03Speaker 4: Rox has never made any secret of it that he
- 28:05Speaker 4: always carries his lucky box as he calls two silver dollars.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Never without them, he said to himself. But if Rox
- 28:12Speaker 4: is never without them, then this is not Roux's body,
- 28:15Speaker 4: but it looks just like his twin brother Rox. I
- 28:18Speaker 4: wouldn't try that.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Yes, this is Harry Roselle's body.
- 28:22Speaker 4: After they left your office's afternoon Protherick Roux killed his brother,
- 28:26Speaker 4: exchanged clothes and effect with the corpse, and no doubt
- 28:29Speaker 4: thought he'd pull his smartest coop by taking over his
- 28:32Speaker 4: respectable twin brother's identity. He escaped all possibility of conviction
- 28:36Speaker 4: for the murder of Google, the dying man who had
- 28:38Speaker 4: named Roux this is a sailing fellows.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Out of his head.
- 28:40Speaker 5: RUFFI couldn't pronounce an art to save his life.
- 28:42Speaker 2: And you hear me run read Harry.
- 28:44Speaker 7: How aster the answer for that?
- 28:45Speaker 5: Before you would secretly had your speech defect corrected so
- 28:48Speaker 5: that now you can.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Pronounce ours either way.
- 28:50Speaker 7: Don't try it.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Yes, Ruff, you had all the angles, all but one
- 28:56Speaker 4: you held out of your two lucky silver dollars, and.
- 28:59Speaker 5: It wouldn't surprise if they're in your pocket right.
- 29:01Speaker 7: Now, virgin.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Ellery, are they ani?
- 29:25Speaker 2: And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the solution to
- 29:27Speaker 2: our mystery.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Thank you again, mister Saint John's, for serving as our
- 29:30Speaker 4: guest arm care detective this evening, and as mementos of
- 29:33Speaker 4: this occasion, I have for you a copy of my
- 29:35Speaker 4: latest mystery anthology, The Queen's Awards nineteen forty seven, and
- 29:39Speaker 4: a subscription to Ellery Queen's Mystery magazine Ellery.
- 29:42Speaker 2: What's on the blodder for next week?
- 29:43Speaker 5: Well, next week, Baul, We're going to try to pick
- 29:45Speaker 5: a potential killer out of a.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Rather large number of suspects. How many suspects were there? Ten?
- 29:51Speaker 2: Thous huh?
- 29:52Speaker 4: Listening next week to the curious case of the man
- 29:57Speaker 4: in the Street. This is Ellery Queen saying good night
- 30:10Speaker 4: until next week and enlisting all Americans every night and
- 30:14Speaker 4: every day in a fight against bad citizenship, bigotry, and discrimination,

- 32:09Speaker 11: OTR Westerns dot Com slash Live. You're listening to the
- 32:13Speaker 11: great detectives of Old time Radio with Adam Graham and
- 32:16Speaker 11: now let's get back into the show.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, when I heard Jack Webb was in
- 32:26Speaker 1: this episode, I had to go back and re listen
- 32:30Speaker 1: to the show to Find where Webb appeared and was
- 32:32Speaker 1: actually at the beginning. He played the character of Reno. However,
- 32:37Speaker 1: he played the character with a very slight dialect, and
- 32:42Speaker 1: it's actually pretty effective. In his book My Name Is Friday,
- 32:46Speaker 1: Michael Hayde said that fellow actors at KGO didn't think
- 32:52Speaker 1: much of Webb's ability at different voices and dialects, but
- 32:56Speaker 1: this was actually a pretty decent accent. I've heard so
- 33:00Speaker 1: very corny Southern slash text and accents, and this one
- 33:04Speaker 1: was subtle enough I actually missed it. Overall, this also
- 33:09Speaker 1: reflects the fact with Ellery really coming on as a
- 33:13Speaker 1: lot stronger character than we heard in the Carlton Young era.
- 33:18Speaker 1: There's a lot more energy, passion, even fight than we
- 33:23Speaker 1: would have seen in these earlier portrayals, and that reflects
- 33:28Speaker 1: changes in the detective genre. I think we heard it
- 33:31Speaker 1: to a degree with Nick Carter, though Nick was a
- 33:34Speaker 1: little bit more action pack to begin with. Though it's
- 33:36Speaker 1: a I think fine performances all around, and of course
- 33:40Speaker 1: we do hear that same focus of the anti bigotry
- 33:45Speaker 1: message that was used on so many programs in this
- 33:49Speaker 1: era directly after World War Two. All right, Well, on
- 33:54Speaker 1: to some listener comments and feedbacks regarding the episode. The
- 34:02Speaker 1: message in read it kills me the right way. Writers
- 34:06Speaker 1: are so blunt about the women involved being unattractive. They
- 34:11Speaker 1: did the same thing during Nick the Knife, as if
- 34:13Speaker 1: they could understand someone attacking attractive women, but attacking a
- 34:19Speaker 1: homely woman just made no sense to them. It was
- 34:23Speaker 1: definitely different times. Then I have an email from Linda
- 34:28Speaker 1: who writes, Adam, thank you for the podcast. I listened
- 34:31Speaker 1: to them before going to sleep, then the following morning
- 34:34Speaker 1: replay what I missed by falling asleep. Have you considered
- 34:38Speaker 1: scheduling Speed Gibson of the International Secret Police as one
- 34:42Speaker 1: of your future shows. They are geared more towards adolilescent
- 34:45Speaker 1: boys with lots of cliffhangers, but I found them fun.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Hearing about the real daring required to fly at that
- 34:52Speaker 1: time was interesting. Of course, I always wondered how everyone
- 34:56Speaker 1: seemed to know about the Secret Police, but that didn't
- 34:59Speaker 1: stop my enjoyment. Each show is fifteen minutes. Well, thank
- 35:04Speaker 1: you so much for the tip, Linda. I hadn't considered
- 35:08Speaker 1: Speed Gifts, and from what I gathered it was more
- 35:11Speaker 1: of an adventure show. But I will take a listen
- 35:14Speaker 1: to it in the near future and see if it
- 35:17Speaker 1: might fit. Thanks so much for the tap. And there
- 35:21Speaker 1: are lots of secrets in old time radio that really
- 35:24Speaker 1: aren't the biggest thing I'm actually struck by is the
- 35:28Speaker 1: man called X is a secret agent, but everywhere he
- 35:33Speaker 1: goes someone announces that it's the man called X. How
- 35:38Speaker 1: about just the man called Ken Thurston. It can be
- 35:40Speaker 1: just as anonymous at any right, though, it's no secret.
- 35:45Speaker 1: What's coming up tomorrow It's the Adventures of Philip Marlow.
- 35:48Speaker 1: And then next Tuesday join us for another episode of
- 35:51Speaker 1: the Adventures of Ellery Queen. In the meanwhile, send your
- 35:54Speaker 1: comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow
- 35:59Speaker 1: us on Twitter, are at Radio Detectives, and become one
- 36:02Speaker 1: of our friends on Facebook, Facebook, dot com, Slash Radiodetectives.
- 36:07Speaker 1: From Boise, Idaho, this is your host, Adam graham Son
- 36:11Speaker 1: and off
