- 0:13Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm your host Colleen Witt, and today we have very
- 0:18Speaker 1: special guest actress and host Portia Coleman is in the building. Ramona,
- 0:23Speaker 1: how are you.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm good with just cooking of things, you know, not much.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you already getting started. Why don't you go ahead?
- 0:29Speaker 1: I mean you are not wasting any time?
- 0:31Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 0:32Speaker 1: On this show, we do have a phrase, the broker
- 0:35Speaker 1: the dish, the better the story. This dish was definitely
- 0:38Speaker 1: under I want to say, or ten bucks probably. Yeah,
- 0:41Speaker 1: go ahead and tell our listeners what are you gonna
- 0:44Speaker 1: have me eating today?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Listen? So I'm gonna have y'all eating pigs and a blanket.
- 0:48Speaker 2: It's the perfect struggle meal because everybody knows a good
- 0:50Speaker 2: hot dog. Yeah, but I never loved the hot dog
- 0:53Speaker 2: buns as much as I like these biscuits.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, the biscuits. You didn't even choose the chrismal.
- 0:59Speaker 2: No, not Caissant's. The biscuits is by the time you
- 1:02Speaker 2: pack them and you put them in and they get fluffy.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Trust me, these pigs in a banket. It fills you
- 1:06Speaker 2: up while you're struggling, but at the same time you
- 1:10Speaker 2: appreciate it because it cooks. Usually I would always actually
- 1:15Speaker 2: heat and cook my wieners first. Okay, okay, so I
- 1:18Speaker 2: do that first usually, but they could still cook while
- 1:20Speaker 2: in here too. So you take it like this. You
- 1:23Speaker 2: take it and you roll it.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So when you cook it, are you putting it in hot?
- 1:29Speaker 2: I put the usually the wieners in fully cooked, but no,
- 1:32Speaker 2: you put it in because the biscuit's gonna cook, and
- 1:33Speaker 2: then the winner can cook inside it at the same time.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Usually it's about fifteen minutes. I like my stuff well done,
- 1:38Speaker 2: so I like to leave it in there so it's
- 1:40Speaker 2: literally easy. And what I'm gonna do is, I'm actually
- 1:42Speaker 2: gonna like put a little butter already in the pan
- 1:44Speaker 2: because you don't want it to stick. You gotta have
- 1:46Speaker 2: it be nice and greasy so it can kind of
- 1:48Speaker 2: like toast a little bit too, like underneath it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And then we got you the buster the butter biscuits.
- 1:53Speaker 1: If I didn't know you were gonna cook your first,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I wasn't too sure on the show.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I always like, I like to cook my wieners first,
- 2:01Speaker 2: but it's okay because it can still cooked while inside.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It's not a problem. But no, I like to butter
- 2:06Speaker 2: this little pan. But see like this little I mean,
- 2:09Speaker 2: look how cute.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah it's cute. I didn't know how you were gonna
- 2:11Speaker 1: do it.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, you take it and you roll it up again
- 2:13Speaker 2: struggle meal.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So you won't see the you won't see the hot
- 2:17Speaker 1: dogs from the outside.
- 2:18Speaker 2: See that's the thing. Sometimes you can take them and
- 2:20Speaker 2: cut them up if you want a smaller biscuit. But
- 2:21Speaker 2: since these are the wide ones, you can cut them
- 2:24Speaker 2: up and just still have it throughout. Because if you
- 2:25Speaker 2: take one whole wiener, the whole winer would be extended
- 2:29Speaker 2: past the biscuit. Yeah, so you don't want to do that.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It's already going to expand, and so will the wiinner itself,
- 2:33Speaker 2: so you're gonna actually taste Look the wiinner's on both sides.
- 2:36Speaker 2: See it's already here. So I'm telling you talking about struggle.
- 2:39Speaker 2: This right here was my quick go to.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Okay, so the ingredients are.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Butter biscuits, butter biscuits, a little bit of butter and
- 2:47Speaker 2: some margarine, and all you need is some some hot dogs.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Like it's so simple and so easy. So look, so
- 2:53Speaker 2: see you can go this way like this. So see
- 2:54Speaker 2: how I'm putting them like this. You take them and
- 2:57Speaker 2: you fold it this way, and you do it just
- 2:59Speaker 2: like this, and you cover it because you want to
- 3:01Speaker 2: make sure they don't open up while you're actually putting
- 3:03Speaker 2: them in the Yeah, I'm telling you it looks crazy,
- 3:06Speaker 2: but it's gonna be so delicious.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I love it. I'm starving. So you don't ever add
- 3:11Speaker 1: cheese or anything.
- 3:12Speaker 2: No, we'll see these are butter biscuits though. Okay, so
- 3:14Speaker 2: you can add cheese, but I personally didn't need cheese
- 3:17Speaker 2: or like them necessarily in between it because again, we
- 3:19Speaker 2: ain't got no cheese. But I never tried it with cheese,
- 3:22Speaker 2: but I never I never needed it because again, these busts.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Look at these biscuits.
- 3:25Speaker 1: These are already so yet it's gonna be good. It's
- 3:28Speaker 1: gonna I'm not gonna mess with your dish. I'm just
- 3:30Speaker 1: like getting creative from the sideline.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Listen. I love it. So see this one, I don't
- 3:34Speaker 2: let's say, I don't want to make it that long.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Take it this way, m hm. You wrap it on.
- 3:38Speaker 2: And that's the thing. We have more than enough weianers
- 3:41Speaker 2: to work with these biscuits. So we're gonna take this
- 3:43Speaker 2: up in here, got it, roll it on down.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And this is what you were doing to get through
- 3:48Speaker 1: the hard times, did you not? So take me back
- 3:50Speaker 1: to what was going on during these hard times.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You know what? So I'm going all the way back
- 3:55Speaker 2: to when I was seven. Okay, So we're gonna talk
- 3:57Speaker 2: about a little project, a movie that I'm sure you
- 4:00Speaker 2: guys will all know called Friday. Oh yeah, I was
- 4:03Speaker 2: a background after at the ice cream truck and Friday. Okay,
- 4:06Speaker 2: So just to show how long this process has been,
- 4:09Speaker 2: from seven till now, there's nothing overnight about my success
- 4:13Speaker 2: at all. So I was seven years old, me and
- 4:16Speaker 2: my mom, bugging it out, single mom?
- 4:19Speaker 1: And did you have siblings?
- 4:21Speaker 2: I have an older brother, but he's eighteen years older
- 4:23Speaker 2: than me. Oh jeez, So I was technically raised like
- 4:25Speaker 2: an only child because my.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Brother had an eighteen years spread.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah, re married God with my dad and why exactly
- 4:34Speaker 2: she said that finished line? She was thirty five and
- 4:38Speaker 2: was like, I'm starting all over again? What is this?
- 4:40Speaker 2: What is going on? Yeah? And she actually did just.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Does she ever when she gets mad at you? Like
- 4:45Speaker 1: ever mentioned like I started.
- 4:47Speaker 2: All out over you. Yeah. She used to its me
- 4:50Speaker 2: like that ain't my fault. You chose my daddy, and
- 4:52Speaker 2: my daddy was ten years her junior. Oh, my pops
- 4:55Speaker 2: was twenty she was thirty, and then they got married
- 4:57Speaker 2: to have me at thirty five and twenty five, I said, mine,
- 4:59Speaker 2: you was you was robbing the credle cridle.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so she know what she was doing.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Still together, No, they're not still together now, Like I said,
- 5:06Speaker 2: my dad actually passing twenty nineteen. Oh yeah, it was
- 5:09Speaker 2: tough because you know the interesting thing about life. I
- 5:12Speaker 2: was with my dad the night before he suddenly passed away.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Oh he suddenly just suddenly passed away. My dad was
- 5:18Speaker 2: only fifty nine. He was fifty nine years old. So
- 5:22Speaker 2: this is just the definition I think, following your intuition.
- 5:25Speaker 2: So I'm out in the valley doing my thing, and
- 5:27Speaker 2: I had a lot of airan chevon. I was gonna
- 5:28Speaker 2: be a Marina. My dad lives in Compton Wilmington Central
- 5:31Speaker 2: in LA. And something just told me go see your dad.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And at first I was like, Oh, that's far away,
- 5:37Speaker 2: there's traffic, and I don't know if I should go
- 5:39Speaker 2: do that. Something told me again. I called my dad.
- 5:41Speaker 2: He didn't answer, so I was like, all right, let
- 5:43Speaker 2: me just pop up. I'm gonna go surprise my pops.
- 5:44Speaker 2: He's probably already off work. I know he gonna be home.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Go to his house. He in the garage, hill on
- 5:48Speaker 2: his friends, still in his work outfit. Dotta, what are
- 5:52Speaker 2: you doing here? And I'm like, nothing much. I just
- 5:53Speaker 2: want to surprise you. What's up? What are we doing today?
- 5:56Speaker 2: We loved going to Sizzler, we loved doing our this
- 5:59Speaker 2: daddy daughter day and we spent the entire day together,
- 6:02Speaker 2: entire day. So I left, probably it was I got
- 6:04Speaker 2: there abound four or five, left around midnight. He said,
- 6:06Speaker 2: call me tomorrow. You know, your daddy's awesome. Me go
- 6:08Speaker 2: with my friend and just call me later. But he
- 6:11Speaker 2: loves to talk. I did to get my dad to
- 6:12Speaker 2: text because'd be on set. I'm like, Dad, I can't
- 6:14Speaker 2: call you with this text. So the next day that's fine.
- 6:17Speaker 2: I didn't hear from him, and no big deal. And
- 6:19Speaker 2: then I get a call. I see it's my uncle
- 6:21Speaker 2: calling me and he's like, come to the house. Something's
- 6:24Speaker 2: wrong with your dad. And I'm like, what are you
- 6:26Speaker 2: talking about? Something's wrong with my dad? Like that's just random.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I just seen him I say, come to the house,
- 6:31Speaker 2: and I'm like, okay, Well, if he's not okay, I
- 6:33Speaker 2: need to go to a hospital. He's like, just come
- 6:35Speaker 2: to the house. They're not going to move him. What.
- 6:38Speaker 2: And first thing I thought was, if somebody's sick, you
- 6:41Speaker 2: got to move them. You gotta transport him. What's going on?
- 6:44Speaker 2: So he didn't say that, but I knew in my
- 6:45Speaker 2: mind it's like, something's not right. I was on my
- 6:48Speaker 2: way to a premiere with me and my mom and
- 6:50Speaker 2: we literally diverted from the one thirty fourth Freeway and
- 6:54Speaker 2: went to Compton and I and as soon as we
- 6:55Speaker 2: pulled around the corner, I'm talking about cop cars, but
- 6:59Speaker 2: people all in the streets. My dad was very popular.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Just you know. My dad had a key to the
- 7:03Speaker 2: city at Compton because he saved people out of a
- 7:05Speaker 2: plane crash that crashed into his house in twenty probably
- 7:10Speaker 2: twenty eleven, and he was on Ellen DeGeneres and got
- 7:12Speaker 2: the key to the city for saving people at his house.
- 7:14Speaker 2: So my dad was that dude, and I knew something.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I was like, I pulled around the corner and I
- 7:18Speaker 2: was like what And my dad just had a sudden
- 7:22Speaker 2: heart attack that morning. Wow. So again in my mind
- 7:29Speaker 2: when I thought about that, I was like, of course devastated,
- 7:31Speaker 2: but I was like that was meant to happen because
- 7:33Speaker 2: my intuition told me to go see my father. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 2: and I did. Yeah, And having that peace was.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Like I was gonna ask you, did it help you?
- 7:40Speaker 2: Kind one thousand percent? And I never and honestly, like,
- 7:43Speaker 2: knowing my dad and how vivacious he was, I didn't
- 7:45Speaker 2: want to go into the house, like I knew, okay,
- 7:47Speaker 2: if he had a sudden heart attack and if his
- 7:49Speaker 2: wife had got home and it was all these hours later,
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'm like, it's final. I don't need to see that.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:54Speaker 2: People came and I stayed around the corner while I
- 7:57Speaker 2: know the coroner came, and I was like, I was
- 7:59Speaker 2: with my dad before. And I literally thank God to
- 8:01Speaker 2: this day for knowing that I was with him the
- 8:03Speaker 2: day before and following that gut intuition that I did
- 8:06Speaker 2: because I was with him the night before.
- 8:08Speaker 1: How did your mom respond to it?
- 8:10Speaker 2: Well, of course they had been separated for so long,
- 8:13Speaker 2: they've been separated, but my mom of course was there.
- 8:15Speaker 2: But it's like, wow, it's like, I mean family at
- 8:18Speaker 2: the same time. So Mom was there, I remember she
- 8:21Speaker 2: stayed the night at my house that that that same night,
- 8:23Speaker 2: and it was just like the process of thinking like
- 8:25Speaker 2: I was just with him, but at the same time,
- 8:28Speaker 2: that was God giving me that time.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, that.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Was God giving me the final moment. So to this day,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I'm grateful and even everything that I'm doing now, my
- 8:35Speaker 2: daughter will always be bragging his friends. Oh my daughter's
- 8:37Speaker 2: on TV. You gotta go watch my daughter. And I'm like,
- 8:39Speaker 2: I know, I'm making my pops proud. He's writing Inglewood
- 8:41Speaker 2: in a mausoleum. Any time on driving by Inglewood, I
- 8:44Speaker 2: go right to the mausoleum, go talk to catch him up.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Like his presence is literally with me, because I've had
- 8:50Speaker 2: two people that had no idea about my dad's passing
- 8:52Speaker 2: call me and say, somebody just like I don't even
- 8:56Speaker 2: know mediums, like I don't do none of that stuff.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And two friends I remember calling me one day when
- 9:00Speaker 2: I was on FaceTime with them and they were like, oh,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you got to a little day, okay, And I was like,
- 9:04Speaker 2: what are you, Like, what are you talking about? Like tripping?
- 9:08Speaker 2: And then like ten minutes later, my friends were like,
- 9:11Speaker 2: so when you FACETI behind you was a black guy
- 9:15Speaker 2: in a ball head in a blue suit. Oh, my
- 9:17Speaker 2: dad's bal head and was buried in a blue suit.
- 9:20Speaker 2: And I had just left the mausoleum that day.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Oh my goodness.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And I was like, Okay, I said, that's not scary,
- 9:26Speaker 2: that's just my dad's presence.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And then somebody else did it before that same day
- 9:31Speaker 2: and said somebody would have ball head in a blue suit.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Is telling me to tell you, I'm so proud of
- 9:35Speaker 2: of you data, And I was like, she said it
- 9:37Speaker 2: the same exactly. This woman has never met my dad nothing,
- 9:40Speaker 2: she's a publicist and had no idea. So the closure
- 9:45Speaker 2: that I had in a sense of knowing that even
- 9:46Speaker 2: though my dad has gone from this earthly life, my
- 9:49Speaker 2: dad is with me. So dating back to when I
- 9:52Speaker 2: was a kid and starting in all this journey, it's
- 9:55Speaker 2: like you want to have your parents of course beside you,
- 9:57Speaker 2: but sometimes it doesn't align like that. And my mom
- 10:00Speaker 2: and dad had divorced, but my dad was still there
- 10:02Speaker 2: watching me on TV, proud and supporting everything you know
- 10:06Speaker 2: that I did. So it started when I was seven
- 10:09Speaker 2: all the way up until the journey now. So it's
- 10:12Speaker 2: no roses in prettyness over here. Every father's there. I'm
- 10:15Speaker 2: saying Happy Father's Day to the men that are no
- 10:18Speaker 2: longer here, you know, and the fathers that have have departed.
- 10:21Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. But it's a blessing because
- 10:23Speaker 2: I had him in my life and I know he's around. Yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 2: so many things happened. I'm like, look at my dad
- 10:28Speaker 2: just doing his duties, not a father, because he was protective.
- 10:32Speaker 2: He was protected. He'd be like, you're trying to holler
- 10:34Speaker 2: my daughter. Uh uh, Like he was that guy and
- 10:37Speaker 2: from Compton. So this is LA's finest.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yes, So this is official pigs in the blanket going.
- 10:43Speaker 2: There's official pigs and a blanket. And here's the thing.
- 10:45Speaker 2: So these biscuits were gonna obviously like expand. And the
- 10:48Speaker 2: funny thing is that these business are all gonna be touching,
- 10:51Speaker 2: which is fine. So we're gonna cut them and separate
- 10:52Speaker 2: them so we can all have our own gift. Kids.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I wish I had another biscuits because I got two
- 10:56Speaker 2: more wieners. But it's fine, it's fine. We got the pig.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Lit come on, now he's on in the blanket, So
- 11:01Speaker 2: we're gonna we're gonna stop process. I'm gonna put the
- 11:03Speaker 2: time on put the time. I'm gonna put it about fifteen
- 11:06Speaker 2: minutes timer. Let's see here, Okay, I got right now fourteen,
- 11:12Speaker 2: Let's do fifteen minute count.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Fifteen and then the package say eight. But you're gonna do.
- 11:16Speaker 2: No, no, no, the package has twelve to fifteen. Ok but
- 11:18Speaker 2: we gonna say twelve to fifteen. So no, I like
- 11:20Speaker 2: it to go the max. So we can get that
- 11:22Speaker 2: little Chris and I'm gonna look at I'm gonna keep
- 11:23Speaker 2: my eye on it. Okay, we're gonna talk meat.
- 11:26Speaker 1: So take go ahead and take me back to seven
- 11:28Speaker 1: year old. You were gonna go all the way back
- 11:29Speaker 1: to Friday. Okay, I didn't mean to take you off.
- 11:32Speaker 1: It's all good, but it was. It's a fond memory.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I love hearing that story that you got that moment. Now,
- 11:38Speaker 1: so you and your mom, you're auditioning, you're doing all
- 11:42Speaker 1: of this. You land the Friday movie? Yeah, single mom?
- 11:45Speaker 1: Are you guys struggling?
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yeah? But landing the Friday movie in the sense of background.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So background acting is how I started. So I didn't
- 11:51Speaker 2: come off the gate being principal. So when you have
- 11:54Speaker 2: a background agency, they basically send you not even an audition,
- 11:57Speaker 2: you don't book it technically. They to see you on
- 11:59Speaker 2: a piece of paper and say we need little kids
- 12:01Speaker 2: that you know are between seven and ten to be
- 12:03Speaker 2: an ice cream scene. Oh that's literally what happened.
- 12:05Speaker 1: So do you get paid for those?
- 12:07Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, you definitely get paid, but it's like your background,
- 12:09Speaker 2: so it's not a ton. You might get forty something
- 12:12Speaker 2: bucks a day, but you get your vouchers and that
- 12:14Speaker 2: helps you get to sag later on. So I'm seven.
- 12:17Speaker 2: If you remember the scene, Meghan good is right next
- 12:19Speaker 2: to me at the ice cream truck. I remember that,
- 12:20Speaker 2: and that's what we're standing side by side. I'm one
- 12:22Speaker 2: of the little kids at ice Cube. You know, he's
- 12:25Speaker 2: talking from the porch. But Chris Tucker comes up. He
- 12:28Speaker 2: hitting kids, Get out the way, get up the way
- 12:29Speaker 2: to get the big work. Oh I thought. I was
- 12:31Speaker 2: like so bombed when he hit me upside the head
- 12:34Speaker 2: like trying to get to the ice cream truck. And
- 12:35Speaker 2: I'm like dang, Like it was so funny and so
- 12:37Speaker 2: cool because that was my first job and I was like, oh,
- 12:39Speaker 2: I love this. I can get paid just to like
- 12:41Speaker 2: hang out with some friends and be on camera.
- 12:44Speaker 1: It was like immediate So was it your mom that
- 12:47Speaker 1: kind of brought this acting idea to you or were
- 12:50Speaker 1: you going to your mom like I think I want
- 12:51Speaker 1: to pursue it.
- 12:52Speaker 2: It was both. I was already like, I have video
- 12:54Speaker 2: literally at three years old, I was in school plays.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I have literally a video with three at the private
- 12:59Speaker 2: school that I was at. The song called Daddy, You're
- 13:01Speaker 2: My Hero in a play, so like, I literally was
- 13:03Speaker 2: already starting.
- 13:05Speaker 1: So she saw it and completely poured into it.
- 13:08Speaker 2: At five YMCA, I'm singing I Miss You much Janet
- 13:10Speaker 2: Jackson with a flashlight, two backup dancers that I had
- 13:12Speaker 2: doing the running Man the whole time.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Okay, so you were you were already invested already. So
- 13:17Speaker 1: what does your mom doing to support y'all while you're
- 13:19Speaker 1: on this journey.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Well, my mom had a job. She worked at the
- 13:22Speaker 2: LA Unified School District, so she worked in busing and
- 13:25Speaker 2: then she was going for a promotion. The promotion didn't
- 13:27Speaker 2: work out, and then she was like, well, I can
- 13:29Speaker 2: go back to work, or I'll take you to auditions
- 13:31Speaker 2: and just figure out the process from here. And at
- 13:34Speaker 2: the end of the day, it's like, you need somebody
- 13:36Speaker 2: to take you to auditions because as a single. Mom,
- 13:39Speaker 2: how you gonna get there? You can't drive? So my brother,
- 13:42Speaker 2: mind you, who's eighteen years like he's telling you older
- 13:45Speaker 2: than me. He's already in college. So I'm four or
- 13:47Speaker 2: five years old. My brother's at Washington State. And then
- 13:50Speaker 2: he had actually got drafted to like he played for
- 13:52Speaker 2: the Raiders, the Oilers, the Niners for a bit. So
- 13:55Speaker 2: my brother was gone. It was just me and mom's.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:57Speaker 2: So my aunt and my uncle were already doing a
- 13:59Speaker 2: lot of background work. So at that time it was like, okay,
- 14:01Speaker 2: you might do one or two jobs a week. Yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 2: you can take them to set, but a parent always
- 14:05Speaker 2: has to be there. So in between that process, my
- 14:08Speaker 2: mom was doing it. If my brother was in town,
- 14:09Speaker 2: he'd take me. And then I got an agency and
- 14:11Speaker 2: I booked three commercials like that. Really it took me
- 14:15Speaker 2: like six months to get my SAG vouchers.
- 14:17Speaker 1: But now commercials is more money.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Hello, because at that point you got a join SAG.
- 14:21Speaker 2: So when you're in the union, you get more money.
- 14:23Speaker 2: So I went from making probably thirty forty a day
- 14:27Speaker 2: to where I made thousands at a time. I did
- 14:29Speaker 2: a tie commercial with Alberson's commercial and another one was
- 14:33Speaker 2: like this purple Moon like doll commercial.
- 14:35Speaker 1: And at that age, they're putting in an account for you.
- 14:37Speaker 2: So you have a Cougan account, so ten percent of
- 14:39Speaker 2: it goes to a Coogan account, which is literally.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Only ten percent. Yeah, oh I thought ninety then you
- 14:45Speaker 1: get ten percent.
- 14:46Speaker 2: No, it's it's more of a percentage. But the parents
- 14:48Speaker 2: are the ones that actually get the full amount of money.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Oh so ten percent for sure is going to where
- 14:54Speaker 2: the kids are. You know, let's say they want to
- 14:55Speaker 2: go to college, and so later on they have that
- 14:57Speaker 2: little percentage, but that's still not enough. Being fully transparent,
- 15:00Speaker 2: It's like when you think of a household. If a
- 15:03Speaker 2: parent is not working, if a parent is taking their
- 15:06Speaker 2: child's money to live in the household, you're not making
- 15:09Speaker 2: no money. Yeah, because I remember I had when I
- 15:11Speaker 2: looked later, I remember looking probably ten fifteen years ago.
- 15:14Speaker 2: By the time I was eighteen, it's about five hundred
- 15:16Speaker 2: and some thousand dollars that I had made, but it
- 15:18Speaker 2: was only a couple thousand in any account.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Damn.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Now what yeh?
- 15:24Speaker 1: Does that make you feel some type of way towards
- 15:27Speaker 1: your parents?
- 15:28Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, if I'm being transparent, yes, because
- 15:32Speaker 2: I feel like, at the end of the day, no
- 15:33Speaker 2: different than we've had parents. Like look at the Raven Simons,
- 15:36Speaker 2: you got Kyla Prass. This is all people that I
- 15:38Speaker 2: grew up with, Megan, all of us. I knew their
- 15:41Speaker 2: parents had jobs, whether they had one parent or two,
- 15:44Speaker 2: they were working. So I was not thinking in the
- 15:47Speaker 2: process at the time. Okay, I'm supporting a household. Yeah,
- 15:50Speaker 2: you didn't dawn on me till like I'm eighteen and
- 15:52Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, now I'm not moving out right away,
- 15:56Speaker 2: but I'm paying for everything. And by the time I'm
- 15:59Speaker 2: ready to go go, which was still much later than
- 16:02Speaker 2: most people end up leaving home.
- 16:04Speaker 1: You made all this money, but you still couldn't leave
- 16:06Speaker 1: because you.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Saying yes, I'm very I'm very much saying that because
- 16:12Speaker 2: at the end of the day, if someone is like,
- 16:14Speaker 2: right now the business mind that I have now, so
- 16:16Speaker 2: many things would have been different. But I didn't know
- 16:18Speaker 2: I was a kid. There's no way there should have
- 16:20Speaker 2: been a business that my mom set up.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Like if you look at the Mary Kay to
- 16:24Speaker 1: Nashley Olson's man, the parents, the parents like whooped.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Of course they kicked asked with their investments or a
- 16:31Speaker 2: lot of times you see, even like the Raven simone
- 16:33Speaker 2: like they had her father always saw with certain auditions.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Do I feel like I wish my mom would have
- 16:37Speaker 2: took the business mindset that a lot of other parents had. Absolutely,
- 16:41Speaker 2: because I remember getting eaten up in taxes as a
- 16:43Speaker 2: kid when my mom should have had a company LLC
- 16:46Speaker 2: or escort or something.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Oh, the money was going directly to you.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yes, But therefore, since she didn't work, I'm paying like
- 16:54Speaker 2: I'm not her dependent, she's technically mine. Yeah, so in
- 16:57Speaker 2: tax is mine, I'm getting eaten up in so many ways.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Where someone new business, it would have been different. Now
- 17:02Speaker 2: now I have two companies, two businesses, everything runs through
- 17:05Speaker 2: es Corps, and I pay personal taxes. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 2: well now it's like it's next level. But I didn't
- 17:11Speaker 2: know nothing.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Do you have yourself on payroll like a salary?
- 17:14Speaker 2: Yeah, depending you have to. Yeah, a lot of times
- 17:16Speaker 2: you have yourself on salary because it's like I'm employing myself.
- 17:18Speaker 2: So even like right now on the shows that I have,
- 17:20Speaker 2: I am employing. My company is employing Porsche to come
- 17:24Speaker 2: to work. Yes, and that's how not only is it legal,
- 17:26Speaker 2: but it's legit because people don't realize that LLCs they
- 17:28Speaker 2: stop and cap you at how much you can write off.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Well, it also helps you too. And I talk about
- 17:33Speaker 1: this a lot, yeah on camera, but when you're going
- 17:36Speaker 1: to buy real estate, you being an employee allows you
- 17:40Speaker 1: to leverage more versus if you're just an independent contract
- 17:44Speaker 1: care company.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Independent contractors don't get looked at as a good business
- 17:47Speaker 2: person to loan money to.
- 17:48Speaker 1: And then and then the banks also get look at
- 17:50Speaker 1: you as higher risks because they're like, wait, how do
- 17:53Speaker 1: we know your business is even gonna be here.
- 17:55Speaker 2: There's too many people that are entrepreneurs, too many people
- 17:57Speaker 2: that are trying to trying to say it, because this
- 18:00Speaker 2: entertainment is full of people that are hoping to make it.
- 18:02Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, if I'm a bank,
- 18:04Speaker 2: I'm not going to give you five hundred thousand dollars
- 18:06Speaker 2: because you got a hope and a dream. I would
- 18:08Speaker 2: give you that money if I saw you had a
- 18:10Speaker 2: company and you're putting yourself on saling and your company
- 18:11Speaker 2: already gross this money and you're paying yourself a salary
- 18:14Speaker 2: of eighty or ninety k. It just looks different on paper.
- 18:17Speaker 2: So in hindsight, of course, everything that I see now
- 18:19Speaker 2: I wish my mom had done. And there's a lot
- 18:22Speaker 2: of tension that it came from that once I let
- 18:24Speaker 2: her know.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Like when did you let her know? Like what age
- 18:27Speaker 1: are you?
- 18:27Speaker 2: Like? Oh, man, I got my license in sixteen. So
- 18:30Speaker 2: when I got my license, the first thing I said was, Okay, Mom,
- 18:33Speaker 2: I want you to transition from this standpoint of being
- 18:36Speaker 2: just my mom that's with me, to being maybe a CPA.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Maybe you could be a business manager. Maybe you could
- 18:42Speaker 2: do this I'm talking about. I'm like, so big college,
- 18:44Speaker 2: like your mom, not your ma mager, correct the ma major.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I think a lot of people take that standpoint. But
- 18:50Speaker 2: to me, if you're my manager, you bringing jobs to
- 18:52Speaker 2: the table.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so you're like booking your own jobs. You're dealing
- 18:55Speaker 1: with my agent exactly she's doing.
- 18:57Speaker 2: She's dealing with the agents and calling them because obviously
- 19:00Speaker 2: that back then it was pages. Let me talk. I'll
- 19:01Speaker 2: tell my age is pagers. You get a page, come
- 19:04Speaker 2: to the office, you gotta leave, you got an audition,
- 19:06Speaker 2: Come because you have a meeting. So she's driving me everywhere.
- 19:09Speaker 2: But at the point when I'm able to drive, and
- 19:11Speaker 2: I got my diploma when I was sixteen, years old.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I was legally emancipated in sixteen. I graduated a year
- 19:16Speaker 2: emancipated in sixteen. So here's the thing.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You divorced your mom.
- 19:19Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no. So let's clarify that, no, emancipation is
- 19:23Speaker 2: in the system of schooling. You're technically legally listed as
- 19:27Speaker 2: an adult because when people are working on set, actors
- 19:30Speaker 2: and kids can only work about like four to six hours. Yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 2: So if I'm sixteen, but if I've already got my diploma,
- 19:36Speaker 2: that means they don't have to send me to schooling
- 19:37Speaker 2: on set, and if I've already legally fulfilled my obligation
- 19:40Speaker 2: in the school system, I can work twelve to fifteen
- 19:43Speaker 2: hours like an adult.
- 19:44Speaker 1: So you're saying emancipated in this That's what it means
- 19:46Speaker 1: to me.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Emancipation is legally in the system of acting.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Okay, because they have emancipation, Like I know in New York,
- 19:55Speaker 1: it's like where you you sever that time with your parents,
- 19:58Speaker 1: they're no longer legally financially response.
- 20:00Speaker 2: No, no, no, that's for sure. I've definitely seen a lot
- 20:02Speaker 2: of kids that are like going through adoption and they're like, hey, okay,
- 20:05Speaker 2: I want to mancipate for my parent. You know, in
- 20:07Speaker 2: the emancipation of acting world, it's just from the sense of, oh,
- 20:10Speaker 2: you're graduating. Because I even remember the first time it
- 20:12Speaker 2: really counted was when I remember I was sixteen going
- 20:15Speaker 2: on seventeen and the Parkers audition came up, and I
- 20:18Speaker 2: remember they wanted somebody like in their twenties. Yeah, so
- 20:20Speaker 2: I was only seventeen. They didn't know that, but my
- 20:23Speaker 2: agent I was listed as an adult. By the time
- 20:25Speaker 2: I got on set and was working with Monique and
- 20:26Speaker 2: all them, they were like, how old are you? And
- 20:28Speaker 2: I'm like, I've already graduated. I drive myself to set. Wow,
- 20:31Speaker 2: I'm treated like an adult in the system. So therefore,
- 20:35Speaker 2: companies want to work with the kids. Even if you
- 20:37Speaker 2: see a lot of movies back in the day when
- 20:38Speaker 2: we were watching Saved by the Bill, all the kids
- 20:40Speaker 2: weren't high schoolers. They're in their thirties for a reason. Yeah,
- 20:44Speaker 2: Power Rangers, all these different shows where you have kids,
- 20:47Speaker 2: the actors are of age, they just play younger.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Now, when Monique and those guys found out, like, hey,
- 20:51Speaker 1: she's younger, did it cause a little bit.
- 20:54Speaker 2: No, It was totally fun because me and count is
- 20:55Speaker 2: vond were not necessarily close in age, but we always
- 20:58Speaker 2: had to vibe. Me and ken Elle Countess Parker, like
- 21:01Speaker 2: even Monique. I walked on seting the first thing she
- 21:03Speaker 2: said was we need to get this bittion food. You
- 21:06Speaker 2: too scared? And I was like, here we go, Like no,
- 21:08Speaker 2: it was a vibe. It was. It was so fun.
- 21:10Speaker 2: But the fact that I already graduated early outside of emancipation.
- 21:14Speaker 2: I did all my credits that I needed, and I
- 21:17Speaker 2: already was ahead of my courses and was smart. So
- 21:19Speaker 2: I graduated literally a year early.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Did you now were you going to regular schooling or
- 21:24Speaker 1: were you doing private?
- 21:24Speaker 2: Yeah? No, I went to Hollywood High School Performing Arts, right,
- 21:27Speaker 2: So you're busting.
- 21:28Speaker 1: You really focused, you knew what you wanted to do.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I was a school I loved school and I loved working,
- 21:33Speaker 2: So I went to school. I got all my credits,
- 21:35Speaker 2: but at the same time, I wanted to be an actress,
- 21:37Speaker 2: so I figured, if I can go to school finish early,
- 21:40Speaker 2: I can get out and go to set in full time.
- 21:42Speaker 2: So I got my diploma. Then I went to a
- 21:44Speaker 2: home school and just took like calculus and just like
- 21:47Speaker 2: some math classes to already be over yeah, like I
- 21:50Speaker 2: already went over expectation what I needed to do because
- 21:56Speaker 2: I was already I looked and as a junior, I
- 21:57Speaker 2: was like, wait, I could have graduated, like at the
- 21:59Speaker 2: tenth grade. I know not I have so many credits
- 22:01Speaker 2: because you get more credits when you're on set. I
- 22:03Speaker 2: was like, I could have been out of school. So
- 22:05Speaker 2: I checked out my junior year and I was like,
- 22:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna go to a whole school for two three months,
- 22:08Speaker 2: and I'm glad I did because I end up getting
- 22:09Speaker 2: a Disney movie and I was not even gonna be
- 22:11Speaker 2: home for my graduation.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Wow.
- 22:13Speaker 2: So I remember going to another friend's prom and literally
- 22:15Speaker 2: celebrating my birthday in Salt Lake City on the set
- 22:18Speaker 2: of Pixel Perfect.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Wow.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And I did it Disney with, which is big now
- 22:21Speaker 2: on Disney Plus people go watch it all the time.
- 22:23Speaker 2: They hit me.
- 22:24Speaker 1: So at sixteen, though, you're starting to say hey mama.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Yeah, cause I'm driving, I'm doing my things. So I'm like, hey,
- 22:30Speaker 2: I don't need you in that capacity, so maybe try
- 22:31Speaker 2: to shift into this lane. So it's also like trying
- 22:34Speaker 2: to adult in a way, because you grow up fast
- 22:36Speaker 2: when you're in entertainment.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Mind youuly having a conversation like that with your parents.
- 22:40Speaker 2: You know, it's like you need that, like because I know,
- 22:43Speaker 2: like I'm very self sufficient so much in a way
- 22:45Speaker 2: where it's like it's scary where I'm like, I have
- 22:47Speaker 2: to let other people help me do things because I'm
- 22:49Speaker 2: so used to doing it myself. But at sixteen, I'm like, Okay,
- 22:52Speaker 2: I got my license, I already had a first car,
- 22:54Speaker 2: I got everything, so now let's try to transition into
- 22:56Speaker 2: this phase of what you can be for me. But
- 22:59Speaker 2: my mom is stuck on like, no, I gotta be there.
- 23:01Speaker 2: I'm I'm gonna be with you and we're gonna be together.
- 23:02Speaker 2: And I'm like okay. So it kind of kept going,
- 23:06Speaker 2: you know, for a while, and I'm like, Okay, the
- 23:08Speaker 2: transition has to happen because why am I going to
- 23:10Speaker 2: pay another person to do what I'd rather pay my
- 23:12Speaker 2: mom to do. Because if you look at a lot
- 23:14Speaker 2: of people that are celebrities, they hire like Jamie. One
- 23:17Speaker 2: of my good friends, Jamie Fox, love him so much.
- 23:19Speaker 2: His sister is his stylist, His best friend is his
- 23:22Speaker 2: wardrobe stylist. His sister does his heir, He keeps his
- 23:25Speaker 2: stuff in the family, and I love that because you
- 23:27Speaker 2: trust your family, So it's like you want to do that,
- 23:29Speaker 2: but at the same time, if they're not capable of
- 23:31Speaker 2: doing it, I'm also not going to be putting myself
- 23:33Speaker 2: in a position to not have you doing the proper
- 23:35Speaker 2: job when you need to go get get training. If
- 23:39Speaker 2: you're gonna be my CPA, I need you to study business.
- 23:43Speaker 2: If you're going to be my manager, I need you
- 23:44Speaker 2: to go study on how to talk to these agencies.
- 23:48Speaker 1: No, so what is her capacity right now?
- 23:51Speaker 2: To you? Oh that's interesting. Just look at the ball,
- 24:00Speaker 2: Look at the biscuit.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It looks so good.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Come on, you think I'm playing.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I'm not gonna get out of this question.
- 24:04Speaker 2: I'm not gonna get out the question. The capacity right
- 24:06Speaker 2: now currently.
- 24:08Speaker 1: We probably have to stop that big bad the audio
- 24:10Speaker 1: is gonna they're gonna.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Go, oh yeah, okay, so let's let's stop the I
- 24:14Speaker 2: got it, I got you. Look how fire it looked though.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It looks good. I'm hungry too.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Oh man, are they getting this because y'all see my biscuits?
- 24:24Speaker 2: No to see it right here? Okay?
- 24:26Speaker 1: Oh you know what, It just reminded me to do
- 24:28Speaker 1: my job.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Come on, it's okay. Oh brow look at the pigs
- 24:32Speaker 2: in the blanket. Wow, the pigs are in the blanket.
- 24:36Speaker 2: And that's why I told you.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Now, why do you use the biscuits? Did you answer
- 24:38Speaker 1: me before? Why you use the biscuit and not the.
- 24:41Speaker 2: The crsuns are too flaky? Oh really yeah, so crssants
- 24:45Speaker 2: are too flaky. So therefore I love flaky. But the
- 24:47Speaker 2: things that they're going to fall apart if you're cooking
- 24:49Speaker 2: them too long when you're cooking also the winner. So
- 24:52Speaker 2: that's the only thing I love flaky. But these biscuits
- 24:55Speaker 2: also have a little bit of on tool. So that's
- 24:56Speaker 2: why I told you I needed the butter, because see,
- 24:58Speaker 2: look when you put the.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Butter, it is curious.
- 25:04Speaker 2: It is it is for sure. I remember we turned
- 25:06Speaker 2: it back on. So see you got to get the boy.
- 25:09Speaker 2: She turned it back on. When she came back in,
- 25:11Speaker 2: you turned it back on. It's all okay, cool, it's sorry,
- 25:15Speaker 2: it's okay.
- 25:15Speaker 1: It looks so good.
- 25:16Speaker 2: It's delicious. I'm telling you when you get the little biscuits.
- 25:20Speaker 1: So your your mom, yes, is she at the is
- 25:24Speaker 1: she at mom capacity or is she at I'm doing something?
- 25:28Speaker 2: I want her to be at mom capacity. But I
- 25:31Speaker 2: think if we're just being transparent, because a lot of
- 25:35Speaker 2: people go through this, you know, in the ship and
- 25:36Speaker 2: dynamic when it comes to their kids. Sometimes growing up,
- 25:40Speaker 2: I had to choose myself over what my mom was
- 25:47Speaker 2: kind of stuck on because I think at the point
- 25:49Speaker 2: when someone gets angry with you because they're not around
- 25:52Speaker 2: in a capacity that they want, when you're telling them
- 25:55Speaker 2: what you need, it can get a little toxic. Yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 2: So I kept telling her what I needed and what
- 26:00Speaker 2: was important, and for her it would go over her head.
- 26:04Speaker 2: She didn't care. So I had to kind of put
- 26:07Speaker 2: this position of like, Mom, these people are going to
- 26:09Speaker 2: be helping me do it. You at any point can
- 26:11Speaker 2: kick in when you want to. But if that's not
- 26:12Speaker 2: going to happen, unfortunately, we're going to have to to
- 26:16Speaker 2: cause a separation in this relationship.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And then at this point is she working other jobs.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I'm so excited about it.
- 26:22Speaker 2: So it's so good. That's why I'm buttering it. That's
- 26:25Speaker 2: why I'm doing it, girl, Venus, That's why I'm doing
- 26:28Speaker 2: I'm getting you to your biscuits. I'm preparing your biscuits.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I think I would hope that she's of course, you know,
- 26:34Speaker 2: you know proud, which I think it's that dynamic, but
- 26:36Speaker 2: at the same time, it's almost proud of you. They
- 26:38Speaker 2: would reach out to you too.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Are you guys not talking?
- 26:41Speaker 2: No?
- 26:42Speaker 1: Ah, dang no.
- 26:44Speaker 2: And again I feel like it's only a matter of time.
- 26:47Speaker 2: But here goes back to but.
- 26:48Speaker 1: How long have you guys not been talking? Is it
- 26:50Speaker 1: like a bad month?
- 26:51Speaker 2: It's been No, it's been longer than a month. It's
- 26:53Speaker 2: been longer than a month. And I'm only saying this
- 26:55Speaker 2: from the standpoint because I think the power of healing
- 26:57Speaker 2: is what people need to no one understand. And choosing
- 27:00Speaker 2: yourself because sometimes parents' job, I think, is to raise
- 27:03Speaker 2: their children to be able to fly off.
- 27:06Speaker 1: And yes, I have this discussion with my husband all
- 27:08Speaker 1: the time, like I think our responsibilities to kind of belity.
- 27:11Speaker 2: And your kids to leave you because at the end
- 27:14Speaker 2: of the day, you're not going to be around forever
- 27:16Speaker 2: and your kids have to be okay without you. I've
- 27:18Speaker 2: been so self sufficient for so long, but I realize
- 27:20Speaker 2: doing that, I enabled my mother to be self sufficient.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Well, that was going to be one of my questions
- 27:25Speaker 1: because it seems like you were very self sufficient book, Yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 1: wouldn't your mom who had a role to play. Where
- 27:31Speaker 1: did this independence come from?
- 27:32Speaker 2: You know, I think the independence came well in a way,
- 27:35Speaker 2: technically from my mom too. If my mom's a single mother,
- 27:37Speaker 2: you grow up watching someone do it all alone, right, Yeah,
- 27:40Speaker 2: So technically in a way that helped me. See like, okay,
- 27:44Speaker 2: I could do things on my own because of course
- 27:45Speaker 2: I'm young. It's not like I have a man or
- 27:47Speaker 2: need something. I had managers, I had agents, I had
- 27:49Speaker 2: people in my life that were there. But when it
- 27:52Speaker 2: came time to do business, when I was like, wait
- 27:54Speaker 2: a minute, y'all, look at this though, Look at you.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I told you that I'm talking about pigs in a blanket.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Grab one. So I'm telling you grab one, take it
- 28:08Speaker 2: and put your little ketchup and your little mustard on
- 28:10Speaker 2: the plate. Butter and the butter, popp and that's that's
- 28:13Speaker 2: what they need. The butter. You gotta get the butter.
- 28:15Speaker 2: That's why I put a little extra on there. And
- 28:18Speaker 2: I love butter. That's what I'm saying. You gotta get
- 28:20Speaker 2: the butter on a bit.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm excited.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Put that. If you want a little Dejon too, I
- 28:23Speaker 2: usually just do ketchup and shake up the ketchup because
- 28:26Speaker 2: you don't like it to be you know, the watering
- 28:27Speaker 2: paratly gonna come out first.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Yeah, So how long have you and your mom not
- 28:31Speaker 1: been talking?
- 28:31Speaker 2: So it's it's it's been a second. I think it's been.
- 28:34Speaker 2: I mean, I mean I look back and the last
- 28:36Speaker 2: sext message was November or something like that.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But even before Sisters is out and you didn't get it. Congratulations. No,
- 28:44Speaker 1: but damn that sucks. I mean sorry, no, no, no,
- 28:47Speaker 1: you know, you know kids, you're thinking about it in
- 28:49Speaker 1: the back of your mind.
- 28:50Speaker 2: We're talking honestly, we're talking honestly. My thing is that
- 28:54Speaker 2: I wish that people and this is what anybody And
- 28:58Speaker 2: that's when I had to separate the difference between you
- 28:59Speaker 2: might need to cut into it. If not, just take
- 29:01Speaker 2: a bite. Let let's take our first bide. Do you
- 29:02Speaker 2: want to do it?
- 29:03Speaker 1: Want to do it?
- 29:04Speaker 2: Dip it in? Take a bile? Right right? How we
- 29:13Speaker 2: like him?
- 29:14Speaker 1: Go to now?
- 29:15Speaker 2: How are we liking him? Make sure you get the
- 29:17Speaker 2: winger and they're.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Doing I'm gonna eat this whole thing.
- 29:19Speaker 2: And I'm telling you she likes it, y'all. First of all,
- 29:22Speaker 2: she killed her biscuit and her pig and a blanket,
- 29:24Speaker 2: so I almost say this is a hit.
- 29:26Speaker 1: It's a definite head noah, you know, I will definitely
- 29:29Speaker 1: go home and do this for my time, you know,
- 29:31Speaker 1: for your kids.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Like we're making pigs in a blanket today, So you
- 29:33Speaker 2: want the more christal. You don't have to put as
- 29:35Speaker 2: much butter. But I like the butter because it just
- 29:36Speaker 2: seeps it in, right, mm hmm, so good.
- 29:39Speaker 1: This is brilliant, easy, and it's brilliant right to the point.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Then it's take less than five bucks.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Five dollars. Get you some biscuits. Pop them open, put
- 29:48Speaker 2: them in a blanket. And that's why you see I
- 29:50Speaker 2: rolled them like that so they stay tight. So even
- 29:53Speaker 2: though it looked like they were mushed, when as soon
- 29:54Speaker 2: as the biscuit expands, it still keeps it. So you
- 29:56Speaker 2: see the winder on the outside here.
- 29:58Speaker 1: How do you feel about the way you did the
- 29:59Speaker 1: hot do say?
- 30:01Speaker 2: Listen, I was fine with the hot dogs, Like I said,
- 30:03Speaker 2: I usually cook them before, but the hot dogs are
- 30:04Speaker 2: already Like, it's fine, the hot dogs are cooked. That's
- 30:07Speaker 2: why I wanted you at least a good fifteen life.
- 30:11Speaker 2: So good, I hold up tearing it up. This is
- 30:17Speaker 2: my hope and this is what my thoughts.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Well, this is a contribution of your mom. R.
- 30:20Speaker 2: This is a contribution because she used to do pigs
- 30:22Speaker 2: in a banket for me, I think for me where
- 30:26Speaker 2: I think the separation, of course even started more after
- 30:29Speaker 2: me kind of begging and even saying like, hey, ten
- 30:32Speaker 2: years ago, I'm like, we need to help our relationship
- 30:35Speaker 2: go to the next level because I'm not a parent,
- 30:37Speaker 2: but I feel like, as a parent, you should transition
- 30:39Speaker 2: from this is my child, this is my young adult,
- 30:42Speaker 2: this is my adult. Now we're friends in a capacity.
- 30:44Speaker 2: I'm still the mother, But how do you need me
- 30:46Speaker 2: to be there for you?
- 30:47Speaker 1: The guiter from like the.
- 30:52Speaker 2: And that's the thing. It's like, if I'm self sufficient
- 30:53Speaker 2: in my business, all I need you to do is
- 30:55Speaker 2: just be a mom and be my.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Parent in that way, like listening and just and.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Being that person not combative or not.
- 31:01Speaker 1: But also a cheerleader too, like the boy Sisters is
- 31:04Speaker 1: out like cheerleading.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's great. My mom was always the cheerleader.
- 31:07Speaker 2: But I would notice that when I'm trying to work
- 31:08Speaker 2: on the depth of our relationship, she was more focused on, Okay,
- 31:12Speaker 2: there's a red carpet, Okay, there's something we can go
- 31:15Speaker 2: to here, And it was distracting from me because I'm like, listen,
- 31:17Speaker 2: I'm your daughter first and foremost before i'm a celebrity
- 31:20Speaker 2: on the red carpet. Yeah, And I had to start
- 31:23Speaker 2: choosing to notice the boundaries and where no, you're not
- 31:27Speaker 2: going to reap the benefits without doing the work. And
- 31:30Speaker 2: I'm the type of person who I'm like, I want
- 31:32Speaker 2: to do the work. And that's where it kind of
- 31:34Speaker 2: got tricky when I was like, Okay, you're not going
- 31:36Speaker 2: to come to this event, You're not going to come
- 31:37Speaker 2: to that, Well, what's the problem, Because I told you
- 31:39Speaker 2: the problem. We got to work on our relationship and
- 31:41Speaker 2: choosing to not want to do that and not wanting
- 31:43Speaker 2: to heal and wanting to just.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Has she ever done counseling? And I'm sorry, I.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Remember one time it was Yeah, I've offered over and over.
- 31:50Speaker 2: I sent the therapies, I sent all of that, just
- 31:52Speaker 2: trying to say, this is what we need to be
- 31:54Speaker 2: because I'm willing to be transparent, but I have things
- 31:57Speaker 2: that I want to talk about as a child that
- 31:59Speaker 2: I feel that this is what would help our mommy
- 32:02Speaker 2: daughter relationship but also the business side. But you need
- 32:04Speaker 2: to learn how to separate the two. And that's why
- 32:07Speaker 2: you see a lot of kids that are suing parents
- 32:09Speaker 2: because their parents didn't necessarily know how to separate that
- 32:11Speaker 2: same thing. So do I feel we can get back
- 32:13Speaker 2: on track? Yes? But am I in a space right
- 32:15Speaker 2: now where I'm like I did all I could, knowing
- 32:18Speaker 2: that I put it out there regarding Mom, this is
- 32:20Speaker 2: where I'm at, this is what needs to happen for us,
- 32:23Speaker 2: and let's go have someone else come in. And I
- 32:26Speaker 2: think it's someone with that generation too. My mom is
- 32:28Speaker 2: seventy five. God bust the people that are at the
- 32:31Speaker 2: generation prior, you know, or two generations prior, because she
- 32:34Speaker 2: had me at thirty five, so there is a big
- 32:36Speaker 2: age gap there. So a lot of the beliefs are
- 32:38Speaker 2: like therapy, why would you do that?
- 32:40Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I noticed that with the I feel like
- 32:42Speaker 1: with that age, not trying to hate on that age
- 32:45Speaker 1: where not.
- 32:45Speaker 2: I do see that with even peers like they're stubborn, They're.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Hella stubborn and they're hella. What is it like defensive?
- 32:51Speaker 1: It's like almost like.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Defense mechanism, Like crazy, if I can say, hey Mom,
- 32:55Speaker 2: this is what I need, can we do this? What
- 32:56Speaker 2: about you and I'm like, wait, I'm just having a
- 32:58Speaker 2: conversation about hot.
- 33:00Speaker 1: The defensiveness is the tricky part, and I think as
- 33:03Speaker 1: their child who loves them, and you're like, man, after
- 33:06Speaker 1: a while, it's like I don't even want to address
- 33:08Speaker 1: these things because it could set off a nuclear bomb
- 33:10Speaker 1: and that's where the break ends up in the sea.
- 33:14Speaker 2: So many parents, I realize, have that sort of mindset,
- 33:18Speaker 2: but in that age bracket, it's so crazy, and kids
- 33:21Speaker 2: that are my age, there are so many people, like
- 33:24Speaker 2: I said, because I haven't even talked about this and
- 33:26Speaker 2: like even like put it out there like that only
- 33:27Speaker 2: a couple close friends know. There's so many people that
- 33:30Speaker 2: I know that had to separate from their parent because
- 33:33Speaker 2: of the healing that needed to be done, that the
- 33:35Speaker 2: parent was either choosing to try to live their life
- 33:38Speaker 2: for them and be this is how you need to live,
- 33:40Speaker 2: this is how you need to do that. And it's like,
- 33:41Speaker 2: at what point do you say, this is not your life.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I thank you for having me, but now my life
- 33:47Speaker 2: has to be lived. I want you to support and
- 33:48Speaker 2: be there for me, like I should be there for you,
- 33:51Speaker 2: But why do I have to be just dictated to
- 33:53Speaker 2: and when I have something to say you don't want
- 33:55Speaker 2: to hear it.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Well, yeah, but I also think it creates some kind
- 33:57Speaker 1: of trauma because I now talk to I'm not gonna
- 34:00Speaker 1: say who it is, but they felt like, you know,
- 34:03Speaker 1: they just kind of got to the point where it's like,
- 34:05Speaker 1: my mom loves me, but she just doesn't like me.
- 34:08Speaker 1: And I was like, because that's what happens, though, if
- 34:12Speaker 1: your parent continually shuts you down, you're just like, you
- 34:15Speaker 1: know what, I know this person would take a bullet
- 34:17Speaker 1: for me, but they just don't like me. And I've
- 34:20Speaker 1: accepted it, so I no longer come to them with
- 34:22Speaker 1: either something amazing or I don't come to them when
- 34:25Speaker 1: I'm in a hard That's true because I just feel
- 34:27Speaker 1: like this person that I love so much is that
- 34:30Speaker 1: I know loves me but just doesn't like me. And
- 34:32Speaker 1: I feel like it creates a trauma.
- 34:33Speaker 2: That creates a trauma. And I had to look back
- 34:35Speaker 2: when I thought of like when you think of your
- 34:37Speaker 2: first your first car, your first apartment, your force wins.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I looked back and I was like, my mom hated
- 34:46Speaker 2: on all those see I hate that, Like I'm just
- 34:50Speaker 2: giving me even more transparent. I was proposed to and
- 34:53Speaker 2: the guy went to my brother to ask him. Was like, hey,
- 34:56Speaker 2: don't tell her mom. You know, I'm just coming to
- 34:58Speaker 2: you because I know her father's not here. And my
- 35:00Speaker 2: mom had the nerve to literally tell me the night before, no,
- 35:07Speaker 2: I'm no had I had no idea that sun And
- 35:13Speaker 2: I was like, wait, First of all, my brother knew,
- 35:15Speaker 2: so I me and my brother disobeyed and went to
- 35:18Speaker 2: go tell moms. Moms held it for months and I
- 35:22Speaker 2: was like, oh, yeah, me and my guy are going
- 35:23Speaker 2: on the trip. Oh, we're going on the trip overseas
- 35:26Speaker 2: or something like that. You know he's gonna propose you right, Well,
- 35:27Speaker 2: what you think?
- 35:28Speaker 1: And I was like, wait, did she say like, you
- 35:31Speaker 1: know he's probably no.
- 35:32Speaker 2: No, you know he's gonna you know he's gonna propose you. Yeah,
- 35:34Speaker 2: he already reached out to your brother and he already
- 35:36Speaker 2: asked for your head. Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I'm talking about all of that. My first apartment I remember,
- 35:44Speaker 2: and I'm gonna just say this too, because again we talking,
- 35:46Speaker 2: we even while broke when we're talking about it. I
- 35:48Speaker 2: didn't move out, so I was like third thirty really,
- 35:51Speaker 2: but again it was at my place, but my mom
- 35:54Speaker 2: was living with me, but I was like, it's time
- 35:56Speaker 2: for us to separate and go.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Wait. Hated it when you say your mom. So it
- 35:59Speaker 1: was like, was it like her place you paying the
- 36:01Speaker 1: bills or you're.
- 36:02Speaker 2: No, no, no, I was thirteen, we moved. I'm on the
- 36:05Speaker 2: lease at thirteen years old. I'm on the lease. You're
- 36:07Speaker 2: on the lease because we move in together. But the
- 36:10Speaker 2: place that we got, my friend is the one who
- 36:13Speaker 2: gave it to us, like it was a it was
- 36:14Speaker 2: a nice apartment complex, two bedroom, two bathroom, Like I'm
- 36:17Speaker 2: on the least. The reason why I'm saying if it's
- 36:19Speaker 2: my place is because if I'm seven making checks and
- 36:22Speaker 2: then i'm thirteen, forteen to fifty, all the way I'm paying.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you're paying the rent.
- 36:26Speaker 2: So it's like and I wasn't tripping, mind you. Me
- 36:28Speaker 2: and my mom had a good relationship, but I started
- 36:30Speaker 2: noticing the more that I started trying to be independent,
- 36:33Speaker 2: the more it's like, you can't do that. Why are
- 36:35Speaker 2: you doing that? You shouldn't be doing that, And I'm like,
- 36:37Speaker 2: that's weird. Like getting a car is a big deal.
- 36:40Speaker 2: You didn't like that getting.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Now you got the car yourself.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Yes, okay of course I got the car myself.
- 36:46Speaker 1: But then I don't know if she like set it
- 36:47Speaker 1: up in a way where it felt like it was
- 36:49Speaker 1: coming from her, or was it just very open, like no,
- 36:51Speaker 1: it never came.
- 36:51Speaker 2: No, it never came from her. I got a car
- 36:53Speaker 2: on my own. I went to a lot and was like, oh, okay,
- 36:56Speaker 2: I want to go get a car. So I called
- 36:58Speaker 2: my friend and was like, Hey, what are they about
- 37:00Speaker 2: this car? It's like literally like this this mind you.
- 37:04Speaker 2: It was already a used car, but it was still
- 37:05Speaker 2: on a couple thousand miles. I'm like, this is a
- 37:06Speaker 2: great steal, and I'm like, I don't know how my
- 37:08Speaker 2: mom's gonna take it. I started realizing, like you started
- 37:11Speaker 2: realizing early. I started having a watch things that I
- 37:14Speaker 2: was sharing. I'm like, Dan, that's not fair to me.
- 37:15Speaker 2: You have to watch what I have to say.
- 37:17Speaker 1: That kind of goes back to what I'm saying where
- 37:19Speaker 1: you kind of set that tone of the trauma, that the.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Tone of your trauma, so your defense mechanism is stronger
- 37:24Speaker 2: than it even should be.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Your survival and that goes back also why you were
- 37:28Speaker 1: so independent.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Yes, And I'm like, mantimes, it's not a good thing.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Dependent. Yeah, you're independent, came from lack.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Of Sometimes your independence comes from the mentality of I
- 37:38Speaker 2: gotta do this because I have to to fight for
- 37:41Speaker 2: myself and my own right to speak up if I'm
- 37:43Speaker 2: a kid supposed to grow up and be happy and
- 37:46Speaker 2: supported in that regard. But I'm being tugged like, no,
- 37:48Speaker 2: you can't do that, No you shouldn't do this. No, no, no,
- 37:51Speaker 2: And I'm like, I'm not a no person. I'm always
- 37:53Speaker 2: gonna think something is going to be the grass of
- 37:54Speaker 2: the greeners other side, the glass is half full, not
- 37:56Speaker 2: half empty. But someone is pulling at you. You're like, now,
- 38:00Speaker 2: is it them that has a problem with what you're
- 38:02Speaker 2: doing or are you just not being allowed to flow?
- 38:05Speaker 1: You can see it. You can see it. Even when
- 38:07Speaker 1: you tell the story, it's like, I won't think about
- 38:10Speaker 1: this car. Instead of calling your mom, You're like, I'm
- 38:12Speaker 1: calling the friend. And then I'm still concerned on how
- 38:15Speaker 1: she gonna take the news.
- 38:16Speaker 2: And I'm still concerned, and even at the point when I'm.
- 38:18Speaker 1: So, when you go home with the car, how does
- 38:20Speaker 1: she handle it?
- 38:21Speaker 2: So here's the thing. I didn't even go home with
- 38:23Speaker 2: the car, the car that she was already driving was
- 38:25Speaker 2: a car that again that I got through a business
- 38:27Speaker 2: dal and we had from a friend. I called her
- 38:29Speaker 2: and like, oh, hey, come take a look at it.
- 38:31Speaker 2: I called her to the location, had her show up.
- 38:34Speaker 2: My friend is already there. She's there, and I'm like,
- 38:35Speaker 2: guess what this is. I'm gonna get this car. But
- 38:38Speaker 2: why we already got a car. I'm like, we have
- 38:40Speaker 2: one car. We need two cars.
- 38:42Speaker 1: So if you're had a license, mom, let's I need
- 38:45Speaker 1: my my.
- 38:47Speaker 2: That's just that makes control because if you have one car,
- 38:50Speaker 2: you can't go without me going, yeah, you can't go
- 38:53Speaker 2: unless I tell you. So. Again, it was that control factor,
- 38:55Speaker 2: so kind of like being a child actor and wanting
- 38:59Speaker 2: to flourish do that but someone is not letting you
- 39:01Speaker 2: do that. It creates a power struggle.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Yeh.
- 39:04Speaker 2: And at some point you have to realize, Okay, if
- 39:05Speaker 2: I'm giving you my first car moment, the first apartment moment,
- 39:09Speaker 2: Like I moved out and my mom didn't talk to
- 39:10Speaker 2: me for a whole year and I paid her rent
- 39:12Speaker 2: in mind didn't.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Talk that whole year, entire year.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a lot, and I'm like, I'm not supposed
- 39:21Speaker 2: to be paying your.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Now is there a part of you that were hoping
- 39:23Speaker 1: to like, maybe at some point she'll go, man, I
- 39:26Speaker 1: have a good daughter, and I'll just you know, I'm
- 39:29Speaker 1: just saying that.
- 39:30Speaker 2: At some point I was like, that should kick in.
- 39:33Speaker 2: But what I did was and I said, Mom, you
- 39:35Speaker 2: need to go take your chances and do this career
- 39:38Speaker 2: as well, because I feel that's what you want. I
- 39:40Speaker 2: feel you want to go act. So I got my
- 39:42Speaker 2: mom with my agency. My mom booked a stand in
- 39:47Speaker 2: role for Sisily Tyson and got her vouchers like this.
- 39:50Speaker 2: So I'm thinking saying the first thing I say is like, Okay,
- 39:52Speaker 2: I used to do background work. I don't want my
- 39:53Speaker 2: mom in seventy I can do that. I paid thirty
- 39:55Speaker 2: four hundred for her to get her SAD card.
- 39:58Speaker 1: So you're like, yeah, but I so, I think that
- 40:00Speaker 1: was an interesting plot twist right there to say maybe
- 40:02Speaker 1: you want to do this too. It sounds like the
- 40:06Speaker 1: daughter is the mom and the mom is the daughter.
- 40:08Speaker 2: That's what started happening, and I'm like, okay, I can
- 40:10Speaker 2: take that role, but I shouldn't have to take that role.
- 40:12Speaker 2: So I me giving and providing in that kind of way.
- 40:14Speaker 2: I kept feeling like I was getting shut out. In
- 40:17Speaker 2: so many different ways shut out by it. It's like,
- 40:19Speaker 2: but you should be happy for my wins. Why is
- 40:21Speaker 2: it not this support factor that I should be having
- 40:24Speaker 2: from you. So let me let you do it so
- 40:26Speaker 2: you don't feel like you're missing out on something. I
- 40:28Speaker 2: go do that during COVID, and then it's still like
- 40:31Speaker 2: I'm not getting phone calls, you're not talking to me,
- 40:33Speaker 2: you're still not trying to go to therapy. It got
- 40:35Speaker 2: to the point where I was like, well, I'm not
- 40:36Speaker 2: paying a phone bill no more. You're gonna have yours,
- 40:37Speaker 2: gonna have mine. Period. If you're not calling texting me,
- 40:41Speaker 2: we're not gonna be talking unless you call me directly
- 40:43Speaker 2: on my phone line that I paid for, You're gonna
- 40:45Speaker 2: pay for your own. So I just had to start
- 40:46Speaker 2: pulling away from certain things.
- 40:48Speaker 1: How did.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Anger Yeah, of course again, if someone's.
- 40:53Speaker 1: At this point it's now it's entitlement, I would imagine.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Yes, I think it's entitlement, but also like, you're supposed
- 40:58Speaker 2: to take care of me, You're supposed to do this,
- 40:59Speaker 2: you're supposed to do that. I'm like, I didn't know
- 41:01Speaker 2: that was the role of your children is to just
- 41:03Speaker 2: take care of their parent, not if their parent is
- 41:06Speaker 2: not sick, not their parent is not unable to do stuff.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Now is she working at all during any of this?
- 41:12Speaker 2: My mom is like she did a job in fashion,
- 41:14Speaker 2: which I remember my brother got her. She worked at
- 41:16Speaker 2: a fashion designers. But we were Me and my brother
- 41:19Speaker 2: were always providing for my mother. She did little things
- 41:23Speaker 2: here and there, but it was never anything full time.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Because when your brother was you said, like right after
- 41:28Speaker 1: eighteen he started going.
- 41:29Speaker 2: My brother was gone out of college. But my brother
- 41:31Speaker 2: did well. He was in real estate. He was I mean,
- 41:33Speaker 2: that's when real estate was kicking all before the crash.
- 41:35Speaker 2: He had money. He'd be like, y'all run his five
- 41:37Speaker 2: six hundred dollars, do it. Because we were under rent control.
- 41:39Speaker 2: This was twenty five years ago. Rent was cheaper then. Yeah,
- 41:42Speaker 2: so we were always in control of that. But we
- 41:45Speaker 2: both always were trying to find ways for my mom
- 41:47Speaker 2: to Yeah, Mom, you can't leatch you all on to
- 41:50Speaker 2: my brother. No more, you can't let youall to me.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Let's get your own independent. So my mom, that's her
- 41:55Speaker 2: unhealing self in her situation where she doesn't want to
- 41:59Speaker 2: let go of her daught her because she's afraid of
- 42:02Speaker 2: what that looks like for her and I.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Had and then me and her identity could be wrapped
- 42:06Speaker 1: up in it two.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Right, one thousand percent. Everything was Porsch, Porsch Porsche. And
- 42:09Speaker 2: I realized, my mom doesn't mean any harm, but she
- 42:11Speaker 2: has to understand that, Mom, you have to have your
- 42:13Speaker 2: own identity. Yeah. You need to walk in the room
- 42:15Speaker 2: and say I'm this person, yeah, not Porsha's mom.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:19Speaker 2: And that's where I started having to realize we do
- 42:21Speaker 2: need our own identities, because I'm like, I need to
- 42:24Speaker 2: have you realize this fairly early.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Too early, I think another thing that must have been
- 42:28Speaker 1: tough to accept this. And I learned this very late
- 42:31Speaker 1: in life. I would say, like thirty six, around that
- 42:34Speaker 1: age where I was like, there's there's a I like
- 42:37Speaker 1: to put people on and I no longer want to
- 42:39Speaker 1: change people. I put them in their proper categories. So
- 42:43Speaker 1: I'm like, if you are, I have friends that are
- 42:45Speaker 1: like ride or Die, that are like happy for me
- 42:47Speaker 1: when I'm up, kill anybody when I'm down. We'll be
- 42:49Speaker 1: sitting Girl will fly in, watch Pretty Women Get the
- 42:53Speaker 1: Rocky Road, and We're gonna sit and watch these movies
- 42:55Speaker 1: while we go through this breakup. And then when you win,
- 42:57Speaker 1: they over the moon like they want the lottery. But
- 43:00Speaker 1: then you have another You got another side, which is
- 43:04Speaker 1: I'm down for you when you're down, but I'm not
- 43:06Speaker 1: excited when you're up. And that one, I think is
- 43:09Speaker 1: the hardest one to understand, because you know this person
- 43:12Speaker 1: is down for you and they would kill for you,
- 43:14Speaker 1: but they just not happy when you're up. And that's
- 43:18Speaker 1: one of those things where you're kind of put into
- 43:20Speaker 1: the position of dimming your light to make someone else.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Come, to make someone else comfortable. And I love what
- 43:24Speaker 2: you said about putting people in categories and letting people
- 43:27Speaker 2: be who they are. I think the healing for me
- 43:29Speaker 2: happened even not even a couple of years ago, when
- 43:31Speaker 2: I realized my mother who is who she is, my
- 43:34Speaker 2: brother is who he is, I am who I am.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Just because you come from your parents doesn't mean that
- 43:39Speaker 2: you are supposed to spend the rest of your lives
- 43:42Speaker 2: under them and being best friends. And I think that
- 43:46Speaker 2: is what I had to realize, is that my mom
- 43:48Speaker 2: is who she's gonna be. My mom has been this
- 43:50Speaker 2: way since for seventy five years. Yeah, I can't change her.
- 43:53Speaker 2: I can love her from a distance. But I can
- 43:54Speaker 2: also choose my piece and knowing what I need out
- 43:58Speaker 2: of this relationship is you to be mother, not the
- 44:01Speaker 2: lady who wants to come to the red carpets. Not
- 44:03Speaker 2: the lady that wants to come and oh look at me,
- 44:05Speaker 2: Like I got tired of that because I would go
- 44:08Speaker 2: places and I would hear the conversations not about my daughter.
- 44:11Speaker 2: My daughter's doing this, but guess what I used to
- 44:13Speaker 2: be doing this and this is what I used to do.
- 44:14Speaker 2: And guess what. You can catch me on this background
- 44:16Speaker 2: show doing that and I'm like, but if you're here
- 44:18Speaker 2: for me, that should be your focus and you're happy
- 44:21Speaker 2: doing that for me. If I'm coming into your space,
- 44:24Speaker 2: I'm not gonna sit here and make the moment about well, yeah,
- 44:27Speaker 2: her show cool, but see but guess what, but guess
- 44:29Speaker 2: what this is? And then you know you got those
- 44:32Speaker 2: kind of friends, like you said, that are happy for you,
- 44:33Speaker 2: but that are also get away competing with you.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's one of the most painful things
- 44:40Speaker 1: you can that you could actually learn because for a
- 44:43Speaker 1: multitude of reasons. Yeah, but past that, I think the
- 44:47Speaker 1: difficulty with being someone's child and I only know this
- 44:51Speaker 1: I have a daughter I don't I have a daughter.
- 44:54Speaker 1: I have a daughter. It's so new to me. It's
- 44:56Speaker 1: weird because I feel me and my husband both try
- 44:59Speaker 1: to do whatever what happened to us. We want to
- 45:01Speaker 1: do everything in our power to not do it to her.
- 45:06Speaker 1: And what I noticed with myself and I think with
- 45:08Speaker 1: other people, is like you have this like unreal amount
- 45:12Speaker 1: of I just want to know my parent loves me, right,
- 45:16Speaker 1: And I think when you're facing those positions of you know,
- 45:19Speaker 1: are they envious, is their jealousy or are they happy
- 45:22Speaker 1: for me? Or are they not? Like I know they
- 45:24Speaker 1: love me clearly, they got me to where I'm at,
- 45:26Speaker 1: they fall for me. That that question, how do you
- 45:30Speaker 1: navigate or do you ever navigate that question of like
- 45:33Speaker 1: is this real love? Especially when they can go a
- 45:35Speaker 1: long time without calling.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think everybody loves different. For one, let's just say,
- 45:41Speaker 2: like you said, you and your husband are trying not
- 45:42Speaker 2: to do maybe what your parents did to you because
- 45:45Speaker 2: you want a different whether it's a different life, a
- 45:47Speaker 2: different outlook. You know, you go through things and you're like, Okay,
- 45:50Speaker 2: I want to prevent somebody else from doing it. And
- 45:52Speaker 2: also when people do that, they can stop their kids
- 45:54Speaker 2: from really living or experiencing certain things. So my mom
- 45:57Speaker 2: is that person like, wait, no, no, don't do that,
- 45:58Speaker 2: because don't do that, And it's like, but I need
- 46:01Speaker 2: to experience this. If I'm trying to be let's be real,
- 46:04Speaker 2: Tyler Perry is a billionaire. If I want to be rich,
- 46:07Speaker 2: if I want to be in rooms where I'm walking
- 46:08Speaker 2: in and getting respected, I'm gonna talk to Tyler. I'm
- 46:11Speaker 2: not gonna go to my mom. No, I'm not gonna
- 46:13Speaker 2: go here to the homegirl. And if you have to
- 46:14Speaker 2: be around the people that you're trying to be, like,
- 46:16Speaker 2: if you want to do better, you have to put
- 46:18Speaker 2: yourself around people that are gonna help you get to
- 46:20Speaker 2: that level. So I think she started thinking that something
- 46:22Speaker 2: was disrespectful when I started saying, you can't be my
- 46:24Speaker 2: plus one today because I'm gonna have my publicis coming
- 46:26Speaker 2: because I need that next job. My agent's gonna come
- 46:29Speaker 2: because they can talk to the producer and talk about
- 46:31Speaker 2: giving me my next job.
- 46:33Speaker 1: And yeah, if you went to school and got the
- 46:36Speaker 1: training or whatever, you started mastered, but.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Don't take it personally. I'm taking somebody else like you
- 46:40Speaker 2: think it's a slight to you, Like I don't like
- 46:42Speaker 2: you like it has nothing to do with not liking you.
- 46:43Speaker 2: I need that next gig because everybody knows actors can
- 46:46Speaker 2: sit here all day long and talk, oh, look at
- 46:49Speaker 2: the flash yourself offline, But everybody a lot of times
- 46:51Speaker 2: is check to check in this business. When it comes
- 46:53Speaker 2: to that one job that hits, it may be six
- 46:55Speaker 2: months and you have nothing. So you got to sustain
- 46:58Speaker 2: yourself in between that. So if I'm gonna be at premiere,
- 47:00Speaker 2: if I'm at a red carpet, I need to be
- 47:02Speaker 2: with somebody that can walk up to a producer and
- 47:04Speaker 2: be like, hey, this is my talent Portia Coleman. You
- 47:06Speaker 2: can see her on this and this and that. Let's talk.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Let's talk about you getting her in your next project. Yeah,
- 47:10Speaker 2: I need that. Or just my mom coming to hang
- 47:12Speaker 2: out and just smile at people and there's no disrespect
- 47:15Speaker 2: to her. I know what she likes, and I realized
- 47:17Speaker 2: that's what she's happy doing. But I realized that it
- 47:21Speaker 2: was costing me financially by just bringing her as a
- 47:25Speaker 2: guest to hang out versus somebody that could read.
- 47:27Speaker 1: You need to maximize this.
- 47:28Speaker 2: You got to maximize the time because this window can
- 47:30Speaker 2: be so fast and so quick. So I think it
- 47:33Speaker 2: was a.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Good business move, good business, and it's not to take personally.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Nothing but speaking of good business moves, hello, let's go
- 47:39Speaker 1: closer to some of the bigger, bigger, big biggest. Come
- 47:42Speaker 1: on now, biggest move. Let's get close to your newest
- 47:45Speaker 1: BT plus with Tyler Perry. I want to know how
- 47:49Speaker 1: wind where? How did it all come about. I've had
- 47:52Speaker 1: a couple people on the show that have worked with
- 47:54Speaker 1: Tyler ive heard nothing but rave reviews and surprising paychecks
- 47:57Speaker 1: that lives. Hello, it's not on the thing. He likes
- 48:01Speaker 1: to just surprise people with paychecks at yeah point, I
- 48:03Speaker 1: know that story you're talking about too.
- 48:05Speaker 2: You do which one the one story where he surprised
- 48:07Speaker 2: people with bonuses? Oh? He was s well, I know
- 48:10Speaker 2: a couple of stories.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Well, I know we haven't released this one. But the guy,
- 48:14Speaker 1: this particular actor had said, well, I guess by the
- 48:17Speaker 1: time your episode, but he had said that, you know,
- 48:20Speaker 1: he went in at a five thousand dollars pay rate.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Wow, and it.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Was like the lowest he had ever made whatever mm hmm.
- 48:27Speaker 1: And then I was like, damn, he's gonna in my head,
- 48:29Speaker 1: I was like, he's going to edit this out. He's
- 48:30Speaker 1: definitely going to edit it out, and he didn't you
- 48:33Speaker 1: know why, because his surprise was that Tyler Perry ended
- 48:36Speaker 1: up giving him six figures at the end.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Come on, and I was like, dang, listen, I think
- 48:40Speaker 2: for sure that shows what dedication looks like. Because I
- 48:45Speaker 2: love my career so much. I've only been singing, acting,
- 48:47Speaker 2: dancing since the day I was born and came out.
- 48:49Speaker 2: I would do this for free because I love it.
- 48:51Speaker 2: I love that I would do it for free. So
- 48:53Speaker 2: to know that I can look and cut a check
- 48:55Speaker 2: and be like what officer all I could do for free?
- 48:58Speaker 2: To work like ten hustles is a beautiful thing. And
- 49:00Speaker 2: I can honestly say I've never had a nine to five.
- 49:02Speaker 2: I've never clocked in a job. I've never done that.
- 49:04Speaker 2: I sing, I act, I dance, I host, I do voiceovers,
- 49:07Speaker 2: video going and I've been working a whole life. And
- 49:10Speaker 2: that's again, I'm not gonna say that's a trauma response.
- 49:12Speaker 2: That's just me. I learned that I love to do
- 49:14Speaker 2: what I do. I don't drink, I don't smoke. I'm
- 49:17Speaker 2: I'm out here. Yeah, So I love what I do.
- 49:20Speaker 2: But when you cross pass with someone like a Tyler Perry.
- 49:22Speaker 2: If I can look at your story from sleeping in
- 49:25Speaker 2: your car to get in your play, to getting your
- 49:29Speaker 2: play financed, to get in your play on tour, to
- 49:32Speaker 2: where now you have a network who gives you astronomical
- 49:36Speaker 2: amounts to put our people in position to be starring
- 49:39Speaker 2: on shows when twenty years ago there was not really
- 49:42Speaker 2: all black lead shows. You had the Cosby's, then you
- 49:45Speaker 2: started remember when UPN popped up? Do y'all really remember UPN?
- 49:49Speaker 2: That's when The Parkers was on, but you got one
- 49:53Speaker 2: on one the Parkers school Boys in Outer Space, Moesha,
- 49:56Speaker 2: We at one point did not have all black lead
- 49:58Speaker 2: shows by other period. Right now is literally doing something incredible,
- 50:03Speaker 2: Like he said to the BT was we're all sitting
- 50:05Speaker 2: there watching he said, I have made more millionaires black
- 50:08Speaker 2: millionaires on TV than anybody. Because he's right. If you're
- 50:13Speaker 2: gonna sit there and take a five thousand dollar check
- 50:14Speaker 2: knowing that you've gotten paid more, but you're willing to
- 50:17Speaker 2: come to work and bust your ass, Tyler is gonna
- 50:20Speaker 2: bless you and do that. Because I remember just thinking
- 50:22Speaker 2: like I've never auditioned for Tyler, I'd never been in
- 50:24Speaker 2: front of him. I was like, dang, if I get
- 50:26Speaker 2: that opportunity, I just hope it's it. The first time
- 50:29Speaker 2: I was in front of Tyler Perry, I got it.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Tell me about it, tell me how you got this.
- 50:33Speaker 1: It's I'm me a whole backstory.
- 50:35Speaker 2: It's crazy. I mean, it's fast. If anybody knows about
- 50:37Speaker 2: self tapes twenty twenty COVID, everything shuts down, so nobody's
- 50:41Speaker 2: really in rooms anymore. So they say, hey, here's the audition,
- 50:44Speaker 2: here's a size, put yourself on tape, find a reader.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Mind you got to find a reader, set your camera up,
- 50:49Speaker 2: set your lighting up, and do all of this stuff
- 50:51Speaker 2: by yourself in your house. Okay, So mind you. It
- 50:54Speaker 2: gets overwhelming a lot of times because you got to
- 50:55Speaker 2: find people that's available to do that when you got
- 50:57Speaker 2: an audition in twenty four hours self taped. Remember Clearsday,
- 51:00Speaker 2: I got to shout my girl out. I love her
- 51:02Speaker 2: to death. Doctor Schammel Bell very accomplished. She helped start
- 51:05Speaker 2: the Black Lives Matter movement. She used to be a
- 51:07Speaker 2: she said doctor. She does everything. But she was out
- 51:10Speaker 2: and about in LA. I said, girl, you got a
- 51:11Speaker 2: second can you come cel tape for me? And she
- 51:13Speaker 2: was like, yeah, sure, whatever you need. I got the
- 51:15Speaker 2: audition for Tiffany. So if you guys watching the show,
- 51:18Speaker 2: the girl Tiffany has the big curly the real name
- 51:20Speaker 2: is our girl Brianna, and I auditioned for that. I
- 51:23Speaker 2: put it on tape. Forty eight hours later, my agent
- 51:25Speaker 2: called and was like, hey, you got a call back
- 51:27Speaker 2: and I was like, oh great. They say they're gonna
- 51:28Speaker 2: send us the details and I'm like, oh, mind you.
- 51:30Speaker 2: I'm thinking Tyler's in Atlanta because I sell tape.
- 51:33Speaker 1: And Tyler Perry.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, it clearly said. The reason why I knew
- 51:37Speaker 2: is because it clearly came out as Divorced Sisters. Mind you,
- 51:40Speaker 2: I'm like, bt. Plus, I watched Sisters. They're nine seasons
- 51:43Speaker 2: in Divorce Sisters. I'm like, not a new franchise. Oh
- 51:47Speaker 2: So I told my agent, push for this. I said,
- 51:50Speaker 2: I know the casting director shout out to Kim Coleman,
- 51:51Speaker 2: love you too. I called her like cousins. We have
- 51:53Speaker 2: the same last name. I said, please push for this
- 51:55Speaker 2: because I think I'd be great for this and this
- 51:57Speaker 2: is the role of Tiffany. Go in. Send the cell tape.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Two days later, Tyler Perry's going to be at the
- 52:02Speaker 2: audition nine in the morning off a sunset boulevard. I'm like,
- 52:06Speaker 2: I'm waking up at six in the morning. This this
- 52:08Speaker 2: is doing no, this was this was at the top
- 52:10Speaker 2: of the year. Right now we're only in July. We've
- 52:12Speaker 2: shot this show in March.
- 52:13Speaker 1: But I'm saying, you send in yourself.
- 52:15Speaker 2: But I'm talking about during COVID is when they don't
- 52:18Speaker 2: go an audition way. So that's why when you said
- 52:20Speaker 2: the process that the process wasn't seeing Tyler first. It
- 52:23Speaker 2: was me putting my cameras, my lightnings up, looking at
- 52:26Speaker 2: the scene and reading with my friend off camera and
- 52:28Speaker 2: just sending in and hoping I get a call. Forty
- 52:30Speaker 2: eight hours later, I got that call. H Tyler Perry's
- 52:33Speaker 2: going to be at the space off a sunset in person,
- 52:36Speaker 2: and I'm like, so mind job. I'm like, okay, I
- 52:38Speaker 2: already got my size memorized what to expect. I'm like,
- 52:41Speaker 2: let's go walk in the room. There's like one hundred
- 52:43Speaker 2: people in the waiting room.
- 52:45Speaker 1: I'm like, how do you feel in those moments?
- 52:47Speaker 2: And that's what actors again, you know, you walk in
- 52:50Speaker 2: the room and you're like, oh, back to these days
- 52:52Speaker 2: when you're seeing every girl in the room, I'm seeing guys.
- 52:54Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know who's audition for this part,
- 52:56Speaker 2: but you have to tune it out.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm the girl. You guys ever become buddies in
- 53:00Speaker 1: those scenarios.
- 53:01Speaker 2: Oh No. When I walked in, I literally saw four
- 53:03Speaker 2: girls I knew. Okay, I knew him. I was like, oh,
- 53:05Speaker 2: this is the girl. I played a sister with her
- 53:07Speaker 2: on a movie. I knew my homegirl from Bee Valley.
- 53:08Speaker 2: I knew people in the room, but at that point, honestly,
- 53:11Speaker 2: just with me, it's like, you're not friends in that moment. Yeah,
- 53:14Speaker 2: because I can walk up to you, but ha's your mom?
- 53:15Speaker 2: How's all this? We got a job to do. So
- 53:17Speaker 2: the first thing I do is I went to sign
- 53:19Speaker 2: in make sure they knew I was there. I went
- 53:21Speaker 2: out to the hallway and I literally was in the
- 53:22Speaker 2: elevator because I'm like the chatter sometimes people like you
- 53:26Speaker 2: talk in all the rooms. I need to be trying
- 53:28Speaker 2: to focus. I'm trying to be focused. I'm like, I
- 53:30Speaker 2: got an audition to be with Tyler Perry in front
- 53:32Speaker 2: of a series regular. I need to be focused. So
- 53:35Speaker 2: I remember being a hallway. It was like nine o'clock,
- 53:37Speaker 2: nine thirty. They said, oh, portion, you're on deck, and
- 53:39Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, I'm on deck.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Wait before you get into there. When you say focused, now,
- 53:43Speaker 1: is that when you do? I mean I see a
- 53:45Speaker 1: lot of actors do this or like the bigger ones
- 53:47Speaker 1: than be like I was in that whole role during
- 53:50Speaker 1: the whole taping.
- 53:51Speaker 2: No no, no, no no no, that's one by the time
- 53:53Speaker 2: you get it. But I'm talking about the time when
- 53:55Speaker 2: you're in the audition room. You gotta book it before
- 53:58Speaker 2: you can get to set. I'm not thinking about working
- 54:00Speaker 2: on set. I'm thinking Tyler Perrent.
- 54:01Speaker 1: I'm saying, when you're doing that focus, are you in
- 54:03Speaker 1: yeahfter or are you just memorizing my line?
- 54:06Speaker 2: My mind? What I do and this is a hack
- 54:07Speaker 2: for me, I put my ear pods in, okay, and
- 54:10Speaker 2: I play music because again, if someone's in the hallway
- 54:13Speaker 2: talking and right now, if I'm trying to study, to
- 54:15Speaker 2: go knock out this scene where I got to mind
- 54:17Speaker 2: you the scene is eight pages. Eight page is long?
- 54:20Speaker 2: You got to memorize in front of Tyler Perry. I
- 54:22Speaker 2: don't want to hear old girl talking about Oh my god,
- 54:25Speaker 2: girl so good to see you. Guess, well, how's your
- 54:27Speaker 2: I don't want to hear that air pods are in.
- 54:29Speaker 2: I'm down the hallway by the elevator, so I don't
- 54:31Speaker 2: got to hear that. That's my process. So by the
- 54:34Speaker 2: time they said you're on deck, I'm like, okay, I
- 54:36Speaker 2: gotta come close, gotta come close. Take out the ear pods,
- 54:38Speaker 2: put it in, put my purse to aside, be like, okay,
- 54:41Speaker 2: go on in the room. Go on in the room.
- 54:43Speaker 2: I see like five people in their cameras. Tyler's right there.
- 54:46Speaker 2: I'm talking about you. He's right at the head of
- 54:48Speaker 2: the table. His head is down. He's not even looking
- 54:50Speaker 2: at me though, and I'm like, okay, I walk in.
- 54:52Speaker 2: His head is down, he looks up. He says, okay,
- 54:54Speaker 2: you ready, all right, let's go. That was it, and
- 54:57Speaker 2: I was like, okay, cool, mind you no conversation. What's
- 55:01Speaker 2: your name? I'm like, okay, cool. He wanted to go
- 55:02Speaker 2: right into it. We go write into it. Next thing
- 55:04Speaker 2: you know, I started delivering the scene. Okay, thirty second
- 55:08Speaker 2: ten he does this like stop and I'm like, oh shit, girl,
- 55:13Speaker 2: exactly what I said. Oh shit. He was like, thank you,
- 55:18Speaker 2: thank you. He said that was really good, by the way,
- 55:20Speaker 2: but I need to read for the role in Naomi.
- 55:23Speaker 2: I was like, oh okay. He was like yeah, so
- 55:26Speaker 2: they'll give you the sides outside and just come back
- 55:27Speaker 2: in the room once you've taken a look at it.
- 55:29Speaker 1: I was like, okay, sure, wait a minute, so you
- 55:32Speaker 1: have like less than a couple of minutes to what I.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Was like, Yes, at that point, it's cold reading because
- 55:39Speaker 2: mind you, I already had the other scene for over
- 55:42Speaker 2: a week. I had a chance to look at it.
- 55:43Speaker 2: I knew it. They handed me some new scenes, a
- 55:46Speaker 2: whole new character, and I'm like, what's her backstory? Wait?
- 55:49Speaker 2: New scenes, so I'm a whole different person.
- 55:52Speaker 1: But I'm saying like, you couldn't use the scenes, that.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Know, because the scene that I auditioned for is Tiffany.
- 55:57Speaker 2: Naomi was not in Jesus, I'm looking at this and
- 56:01Speaker 2: this is one acting Yet when your bag kicks in,
- 56:04Speaker 2: when I'm my training since seven, eight, nine, ten kicks in,
- 56:07Speaker 2: you gotta look at a scene and deliver it like
- 56:09Speaker 2: you are this person in this scenario right in that moment.
- 56:14Speaker 2: So first thing they come out and say, as I said,
- 56:15Speaker 2: who's Naomi? Who is she? Well, she's got thirty seven
- 56:19Speaker 2: million dollars, she just got divorced from her ex husband.
- 56:20Speaker 2: She hates him, and now she's mad that her her
- 56:23Speaker 2: lawyer homegirl, is not helping her sue him. That's all
- 56:26Speaker 2: he said to me. And I was like, okay, okay.
- 56:30Speaker 2: So the first scene that you see that I walk
- 56:32Speaker 2: in on scene one is a scene that I auditioned
- 56:34Speaker 2: that where I'm standing by the car, like, what's up?
- 56:36Speaker 2: Did you look at this lawsuit? What's going on? Yeah?
- 56:38Speaker 2: And I remember after all of that fifteen twenty minutes
- 56:40Speaker 2: walking back in the room and he said the same thing. Okay,
- 56:43Speaker 2: you ready, Like it was no conversation, mind you. I
- 56:46Speaker 2: have a great memory. So what I usually do is
- 56:48Speaker 2: when I looked at it, I said, I'll be damn
- 56:50Speaker 2: if I'm being in front of Tyler Perry glued to
- 56:52Speaker 2: the sides. Hell no, ma'am. I said, I'm gonna look
- 56:56Speaker 2: at it. I'm gonna know some calling responses, but he
- 56:58Speaker 2: gonna get a lot of ad lib and just me
- 57:00Speaker 2: feeling this carriage, okay, had to still respect that game.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Rolled it up, and he was right to the side
- 57:04Speaker 2: of me soon as it started. She's supposed to be
- 57:07Speaker 2: hot that her lawyer's out there. So I said, what's up.
- 57:09Speaker 2: You talk to your lawyer, Geneva, what is going on?
- 57:12Speaker 2: Tell me? No, hi the baby. She's like, the baby's
- 57:14Speaker 2: right here. I'm like, I don't care, Hey, baby, what's
- 57:17Speaker 2: up with my lawsuit? Like, and I'm seeing Tyler and
- 57:20Speaker 2: other people in the room like locked in, but I'm
- 57:23Speaker 2: tuning it out because I'm not looking at none of
- 57:25Speaker 2: the side. I'm just delivering it. After it was over,
- 57:27Speaker 2: Tyler was like that was amazing. He's like, yeah, wait
- 57:32Speaker 2: in the lobby said don't go anywhere. And I was
- 57:33Speaker 2: like okay, And I was like and I just went
- 57:37Speaker 2: for it. And I was like, holy yeah, Like that
- 57:39Speaker 2: was yeah.
- 57:40Speaker 1: And what are you thinking when he's like waiting the lobby?
- 57:42Speaker 1: I want to know what is your emotions?
- 57:44Speaker 2: Like, here's the thing. The reason why I'm okay with
- 57:46Speaker 2: that is because by this point, it went from a
- 57:47Speaker 2: hundred people in the lobby to twenty five. Okay, so
- 57:50Speaker 2: the lobby was getting empty do so I'm like, Okay,
- 57:53Speaker 2: he didn't ask me to come back in, so he's
- 57:55Speaker 2: not mixing and matching. I'm still waiting ten people in
- 57:58Speaker 2: the lobby and I'm like, Okay, that girl was auditioning
- 58:01Speaker 2: for this part, but she's not here for Naomi. Who's
- 58:03Speaker 2: she here for? Next thing? I know? It's like ten
- 58:05Speaker 2: of us, rob Riley, myself, Breonna Price, Me, DeVaughn, and Kadeen.
- 58:12Speaker 2: He's like, everybody, come.
- 58:13Speaker 1: In, sorry for Kurt.
- 58:14Speaker 2: No, you're good, You're good. We walk in the room
- 58:16Speaker 2: and he's like, this looks great. He said, this is
- 58:19Speaker 2: the cast right here. This looks amazing. He said, all right, guys,
- 58:22Speaker 2: well congratulations and get ready to work your ass off.
- 58:24Speaker 2: We'll be doing about two three weeks in Atlanta, and
- 58:26Speaker 2: get ready. Our agents and Lawy's will be in contact.
- 58:29Speaker 2: And I was like, mind you. We was from nine
- 58:33Speaker 2: am to like three hours at this point, I'm like,
- 58:36Speaker 2: holy holy what And just like that.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Were y'all all like high five and each other hugging.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Of course because he because here's the thing and this
- 58:44Speaker 2: is what Tyler said. He was like, y'all can relax
- 58:46Speaker 2: now you're not auditioning no more. And we were all like,
- 58:48Speaker 2: oh thank you God. We were all like standing there
- 58:51Speaker 2: in a lineup, like what do we do like and
- 58:54Speaker 2: Tyler was like, y'all can relax, Like y'all good, And
- 58:56Speaker 2: I was like, mister Perry, You're like it was like
- 59:00Speaker 2: a moment where we were all like we made the cut.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Wow.
- 59:03Speaker 2: And it was in person. So I always had oh
- 59:07Speaker 2: my gosh, like the story I was never.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Had you told anyone else's story?
- 59:12Speaker 2: No good, because like telling these stories is like it
- 59:15Speaker 2: helps actors understand or people that are not even actors
- 59:17Speaker 2: to know the processes that we go through. And why
- 59:20Speaker 2: I talked about, let's say, the traumas and stuff that
- 59:22Speaker 2: happened before, because yeah, I was dealing with all kinds
- 59:24Speaker 2: of stuff, but when you walk in that audition room
- 59:26Speaker 2: or when you're walking in to do your job, all
- 59:28Speaker 2: that has to go out the door in the window
- 59:30Speaker 2: that morning stuff was going on. I was like, do
- 59:32Speaker 2: I feel okay? Like you're nervous, you're like thinking about
- 59:35Speaker 2: your personal life, but then you're also thinking about what
- 59:37Speaker 2: I got to go do. If I'm over here worried
- 59:39Speaker 2: about what's going on with my personal life, I got
- 59:42Speaker 2: to make sure my next job is landed. Which is
- 59:44Speaker 2: why I said, sometimes you have to know where to
- 59:45Speaker 2: place people, whether it's also your family, because your family
- 59:48Speaker 2: could be just as toxic as people that aren't you
- 59:51Speaker 2: got to place that in a box and still be
- 59:53Speaker 2: able to perform and do your job. Because that's what
- 59:56Speaker 2: mattered when I walked in that room. I booked a
- 59:58Speaker 2: job and I literally cried. Once I got into the car,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: I was like, Oh my god.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: And who is the first person you called?
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: Again? It wasn't. I didn't even talk to my family.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: The first person I called was my aunt And the
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: second person I called was my friend who helped me
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: do the cel tape. Wow, and I called. And that's
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: the thing. It's like, your friends can become your family.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: And I have a great family. I have a huge family. Like,
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: don't get me wrong, I'm really close to it to
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: several members of my family. It's just at this time
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: it's just my mother and my brother. I'm not because
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: I needed the support in a different way, and the
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: way they wanted to have me support them, it wasn't
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: going to happen.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Well that and in that moment, you need all positive energy.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: And if you know your people and you put them
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: in their proper place, you know who to call.
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: You know, you know what I'm saying, like, if I
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: know I need to get hyped, if I'm going to
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: the gym, I'm putting all my ying yang, I'm putting
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: on some CARDI I know the vibe I want to
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Yeah, anybody know me knows
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: I will be some checking like assault, shaker, whistle while
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: and a heartbeat because their and they get you. They
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: get you right. But if I know I'm trying to
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: wind down on the night where I had a long day, Baby,
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: I need someone, need a baker. Okay, I need some
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: card up in the rapture, I need some Oh my god,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I love her like she's one of my favorite artists ever.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: So I have moments and vibes that I go through.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: But you know where people you want to talk to,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: You know when a moment happens, like who do I
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: want to call? Who do I want to be there
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: for me? So I'm so glad that, like I said,
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: I have amazing support systems, and I keep a small circle,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: and I do hope at some point my mom and
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: my brother and all of us can talk. But I
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: knew that for me to do the job that I
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: needed to do, and this is even prior to this one,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: I had to create the space in the distance. If
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: I told you what I need. If it just takes
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: going to a therapy session that's really talking out what happens,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: and you guys are refusing to do that, that's fine.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: I can't force you, but I can also remove my
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: presence and know that my piece has to be maintained
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: because I need to be hurt. And being the younger
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: the two, I was never getting hurt.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Now are you in a place? And this is something
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: I've been kind of self discovering a little bit too.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I like everyone in my circle to feel safe to
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: advocate for themselves. Oh, I love that, you know what
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like if we disagree, you should still feel
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: comfortable to advocate for yourself, Like you shouldn't feel like
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: i'mly gonna shut it down or yeah, I'm gonna shut
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: it down, like we're gonna disagree. But and I feel
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: like you're at that place of like I'm gonna continue
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: to advocate for myself.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: Right without question. Yeah, you have to self advocate for
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: someone to respect you. And that's the difference I had
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: to learn, Like, of course, if my mom is thirty five,
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: my brother's fifty six, and here I am eighteen years
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: younger than them. I was already the little young one
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: of the bunch. Yeah, young siblings never get respect.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Let's be real, they I wrong. I know my little
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: brother gets you know what I'm saying. He started advocating
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: firm you have to and let me tell you something.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I shout out to a little bit of work. It
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: worked because we definitely know, like when he talks, we
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: have to listen.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: No don'ing's wrong is gonna let You're gonna let older
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: siblings have that inside. But like I'm a older sibling,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: like you whatever when I tell you, my brother always
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: told me that you ain't been through shit, And I'm like, okay,
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: but I'm trying to tell you from my perspective what.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: I feel and what does he also advocate for your
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: mom to like you know, I understand her kind of
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: it was.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: It was a standpoint of like them right in the
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: fence of like you know again, I was always the
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: middle person. My mom is like oil and my my
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: brother's like the water, and then when you put them together,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: just don't always mix it. I was always that middle
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: person that's creating the peace between their disagreements. So the
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: moment I started had my own voice and saying this
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: is how I feel that. It's like, but you're not
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: on my side. I t I hated hearing if I
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: would disagree about something. She said, No, you're supposed to
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: stay with me. I'm your mother. Yeah, but that doesn't
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: mean that I have to agree with you. That old
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: school mindset, and I I've done so much healing on
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: it and studying of what it is. People are fixing
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: their own ways a lot of times, so where they
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: can't break that the idea ideology of what they feel.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: So I'm not going to debate her on what she feels.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: But I'm also not going to get downplayed and like,
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: f you you don't know what you're talking about yet,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: But you call me for everything. You call me to
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: take care of you. You call me because you know
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: I know everything about the computers, I know everything about technology.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: But you need my help all the time. So don't
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: act like you need my help but you don't want
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: to listen to me.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Now with the Bore sisters, Yes, you guys all
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: have a very nice chemistry going. Yes, which you don't
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: you know, you don't see that a lot in the industry.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: It looks like it definitely carries off camera.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: Yes, let's thousand percent, we ally was out there. Like
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: I said, three weeks. The first week, we all just bombed.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: We all got together, We went to bars, we went
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: to eat, we hung out. And I already knew LaToya
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: because we did a BT plus movie we played best friends.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: LaToya had already knew several of the girls, like Geneva
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: and Latoy already knew each other, Kadeen and Breonna, like
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: everybody had kind of somehow knew each other in a way.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: So it was perfect. And when we locked in, if
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: we're looking at the story saying we got to be
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: friends for twenty years, we really got to come like
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: and had little things. So even as a scene in
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: like episode two, I think that I love with me
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: and Brianna in the kitchen, and I'm telling it like
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: it is, like, girl, you need to love again. When's
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: the last time you let a nigga to be with you?
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Excuse me, but when's the last time you've been with
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: a man in a kind of way? Because you'll be
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: here judging me because I'm stuck on my ex husband.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: But you ain't even had a chance to be willing
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: to go date somebody because your trauma and she has
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: a moment where she's like, you're right, I haven't been
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: able to let go. And in that moment me and her,
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: I was like, we need to have a thing. Are
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: we gonna do this? We're gonna pump? What is gonna
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: be our little thing? So every one of us have
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: a thing that we ended up doing on camera organically
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: that we thought about to be like how wore me
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: and you interact what we do? Me and her are
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: both dancers, so we were always gonna do like some
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: dance stuff like that's our connection. So the connection that
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: you see on camera is very real. The support is there.
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: We have a group chat. It's called Divorced and we
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: said that like people ask, so we chat each other.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: We're always like saying, girl, that scene you did was
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: so powerful.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Now have you guys ever rallied against Tyler?
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Hilarious?
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Never never guess, never talked back nothing, no, no.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: Like I no, because honestly, Tyler is like and you
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: never know is when you have somebody like Tyler, you
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: write direct produce, you thinking you gotta be every line
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: must be perfect. When I tell you Tyler, lets you go, Tyler,
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: let you go. Like there's one time I remember one
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: word and I'll say this. Okay, we're just pointing. I
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: was like, ooh, did I tear it? I said, like,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: because this character cusses a lot, she will say and
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: this is this is literally in the script, so it's
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: like she is that expressive type of person. Will she'll
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: say certain words, and I remember I put God in
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: front of one of the words, so let's just say
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: this God damn. I didn't know that that was going
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: to be a problem because I'm like goddamn and that
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: kind of way. He's like, no, we don't come byd
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: God in a curse word. No. I was like, sorry,
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: mister Perry, Okay, we'll go back and do that one
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: line again. And that's I'm like, okay, cool. Because Tyler
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: is a god fearing man, I'm a godfair a woman.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: I was like, okay, my bad, I'm in the scene
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: so much. I'm over saying yeah there. He's like, no, no,
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: So we've never banned against someone that knows what he's doing. Again,
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: if you look at.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: All, then nothing set him up said it up.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: I would listen. Tyler took us to his house. Baby.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: When I tell you, first of all, we were all
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: having too much pun over there. It's a brunch. How
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: about just getting to the house, sweetie? When I said, I.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Would have done it in front of him though, you know,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Justler's so fun.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: Tyler's a guy who'd be like, I want to hurt him.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Get done so I can go drink later. Like Tyler's
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: mad cool. But when I tell you when we all
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: got the invite, I'm talking about the Sunday before we
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: started working on a Monday, Tyler's like, so you're going
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: to be getting a call about coming to my house
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: for brunch. And we were like, you're kidding. Right When
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: I tell you, they sent personal cars to come pick
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: us up. The ride from his gate to get to
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: his house was like four miles.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: No way.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: How big was the house?
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: Was that dcastle?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Okay? This is the best O times ten. The best
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: way I could say it is there's a scene in
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: one of my favorite movies, john Wick, one of the
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: last John Wick movies, when they have this big fight
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: on the staircase. When they're fighting. The house that you
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: see in john Wick literally looks like the house that
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: we were at with Tyler. It's it's not even it's
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: it looks like a stage It's like, what is this
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: freak out helicopter plane?
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: It's helicopter plane and plane.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: He has a plane?
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Yo, just shout up. I'm gonna tell you this. I'm
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: gonna speak this into existence. Eating while broke will do
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: a Tyler Perry MTV Cribs version of eating while broo.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Wouldn't it be fun to go into his mansion with
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: his planes.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: And somebody see it. I'm just saying he has a plane.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: To know that you can chart a plane just to
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: go eat with your friends, because I know other friends
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: that really don't.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: See a plane like a helicopter plane or like a treaty,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: like a plane that's sitting.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: United Airlines Southwest. That's a plane.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Get the freak out? Did you at least did you
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: at least say hey, can I go check it out?
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: God? No, that's that's doing too much, you know, eating
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: while broke. I would have been like, let me get
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: you a plane ride to first day before filming? Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: to get fired before first day. I'm not trying to
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: be too personal like that, but the fact that he
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: has a plane in his house again, I'm thinking of
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: what was he eating while he was broke? Because he
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: was sleeping in his car.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Yeah, he went before he.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: Even had a chance to have these plays. And again
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: an opportunity where he's giving us money to come to set,
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: which his studio is like nothing you've ever seen either.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I heard it.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: It's incredible. It's incredible. Just so, just so you know,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: he has an exit off the freeway. Why are you
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: driving in Atlanta, it says Tyler Perry Studios. That's the
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: exit you get off.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: As like, so, when you're working with him, do you
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: feel extremely motivated that the sky's the limit now after
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: experiencing all.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: That, absolutely, so you okay, And just so people know,
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: we shot sixteen episodes in eight days.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I heard, I heard a shoot schedule.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: I heard.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: I've heard a lot. Let me tell you something. People
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: I've been saying, like they shoot in a week or
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: two weeks or under two weeks.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: That's real. It was supposed to be ten days and
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: we ended up losing a day because of one location issue,
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: and then the other day we finished the day early.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: We shot eight days, sixteen whole episodes. Imagine how many
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: paid a day you had to do.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: And you guys got paid a lot too.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: I mean you get paid well, yeah, very well. But
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: at the end of the day, it's like, even if
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: you didn't get paid for three weeks of your time, yeah,
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: that's all I know to do other things. No, let
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: me be real, it was great. What I'm saying is
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: that how quick it is to make what you make
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: in those three weeks with Tyler Perry, someone would have
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: to work a whole year. Oh wow, yeah, yeah, more
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: well more than that.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: That.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: The the salary and the minimum wage is is what
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: it is. You would have to be working several years
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: to get what you can get in three weeks from him,
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: because he expects you to come prepared. He expects you
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: to do the work.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Obviously, you're not late.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: No one's late, girl, Tyler Perris never late. That's one thing.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Anyone late to say.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: Ever, yeah what somebody was sick one of the days,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: But again that's that's that's sick. But no, I mean,
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: stuff happens by the end of the day. Tyler's such
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: a professional. He's like, we're gonna move this scene to
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: the end of the day. We're gonna move this scene
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: over here. He's not gonna lose no time. I like,
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: he's not gonna lose no time.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: I like him, so we got to close this interview out.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: I have so much fun with you. I love that
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: you opened up the way he did. I feel like
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: we're sisters.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: I love it.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Thank you, Thank you for feeding me. Come on, you
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: know I'm gonna finish.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: Just lasting bits that we're gonna put our bite together,
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: all right, Let's put together, all right? Why tuning in
