- 0:13SPEAKER_03: Good afternoon.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: It's like the first finally fall day.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 0:21SPEAKER_03: Fall-ish day, because it's gonna be warm tomorrow.
- 0:24SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: Sorry about that.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: We have a very good topic today, but Casey, do you have a story for us?
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: I hear you have a story for us.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: Baking on the fact that Casey has something funny to say.
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Well, um, I had a very bad day yesterday.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: Also a bad morning.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: We I have had a rough uh mom couple days, but so yesterday, Summit was just so hard.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: He was like moaning and crying and whining about everything.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: So finally I was, have you ever tried to like threaten your kids to stop crying?
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: Like, okay, that's enough.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: No more.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: And it doesn't work.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: It makes them more sad.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: I'm like, okay, no more.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: I'm like trying to threaten him.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: Like, I am so done listening to that.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: So I am out of everything at my house for like girls' lunches and stuff.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: And I've been trying to find like a window to run to Costco.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: So finally I was like, okay, we're gonna run to Costco.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: He was a pain the entire time.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: Like, I want the snack cart.
- 1:28SPEAKER_04: I'm like, that's an energy drink.
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: I'm not, you're not, we're not getting snack cart today.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: And so I get just like the bare minimum, our staples, the things I need to like be making the girls' lunches and stuff like that.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: We're going up to check out.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: He's still bothering me.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: You know how you can send the kid in the cart the other way?
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: So that's nice.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: He's like away for a second, and I'm on the other side.
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: Well, so I use my cart and it didn't work.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: So my pen wasn't working right before Hayden.
- 1:53SPEAKER_04: So Hayden's out of town for military things.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: That ad that probably is a lot bigger piece of the story.
- 1:59SPEAKER_04: He's sad.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: I also, yes, I do actually think so.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: I think he doesn't know how to because he'll keep going, I do not miss dad.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: Like just so I think he's feeling things.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: He's like, Between the lines, mom.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and he's acting like a little baby.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: That's why he's crying for his dad.
- 2:18SPEAKER_04: Well, so dad's not here.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: So he uh Hayden reset my pin on my debit card before he left.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: And I was like, You sure it's gonna work?
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: He was like, Yeah, because in the past it hadn't worked.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: So I just trust, went, use it.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: It didn't work.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: She wanna do your pen again.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: And I was like, This is not, this is not gonna work.
- 2:35SPEAKER_04: So I did it again.
- 2:35SPEAKER_04: I was like, listen, it's just it's just not gonna work.
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: Like, I need to get him out.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: I have to get out of here.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: This was an entire wasted trip, which then getting all your dumb groceries.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: So I have to go around.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: She yells at the top of her lungs, I need a void.
- 2:50SPEAKER_04: Have you ever heard them do that?
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: Me neither.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: Me neither.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: So she yells and someone's like, Wow, you could have waited till we left.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: So the customer service team, they come over to start trying to get the cart.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: People are like, oh, excuse me, excuse me.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: And some, it's still in the cart.
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: So I'm over trying to get him out while they're like taking it away.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: And he's like, What about our card?
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: That's my card.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: He's like, That's our food.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: What about our stuff?
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: And I was like, please stop.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: So I put my sunglasses on.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: I was like, just go outside.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: And I was just trying to walk out of Costco as fast as I could.
- 3:23SPEAKER_04: And he the whole way to the door, what about our that's our stuff?
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: What about our card?
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Trauma.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: And so then I'm like, okay, at least I can do a grocery delivery or something from Walmart.
- 3:37SPEAKER_04: Well, apparently from like 5 p.m.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: on, they didn't have anything, no pickup or delivery.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: So I had to schedule it for 6 a.m.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: this morning.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: So I'm keeping an eye on it because our cat gets into my groceries.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: So I was keeping an eye on it, keeping an eye on it, sat down my phone for a second, looked, your groceries have been delivered.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: And I was like, no, ran outside, cat ate my groceries.
- 4:00SPEAKER_04: So then I was yelling at my kids.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: We were late for school.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Let me all encourage you to do the Instacart pickup.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: We have the Walmart.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: I understand this, but it's$99 a year and they deliver and they do all the things.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And then you budget, and it's wonderful.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: People that have their groceries delivered have their life together.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: We used to have Instacart, but then we have Walmart Plus.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: I do have oh, you know what?
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: I have Target Circle.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: They'll deliver too.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, nice.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I do Aldi actually Aldi pickup and then I do Samson Costco delivery because when I go online, but when I go online, so many dollars.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: I do not.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: Someone else in our family does.
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: I do not.
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: I don't have clickbait when I'm in Costco.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: It doesn't work.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: I'm like, I need these things or but I can understand it.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you probably do have you need to have your groceries delivered during this time of your life.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: I didn't know.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: So on when we had Instacart, you couldn't do Costco on Instacart.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: It was like two years ago.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And you put in your all of your membership cards and then it's all discounted.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: Maybe we want to see it.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And you earn points.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: And then you never pay for delivery or any of the things.
- 5:14SPEAKER_03: I've got groceries out, and I like to put them in the bag myself because it always comes smushed.
- 5:18unknown: Oh my god.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: I will say they have not been doing a good job at the produce lately.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: They don't care about it.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: They're just gonna get what you have on your list.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: I need to get out of the house.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Also, say though.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: It's like a fun little thing to do.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Not with your not with your kids though.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: No, I mean I didn't have the privilege of when my children, my big children were small.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: I had all four of them drapes into the store with me.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: I have to tell this one funny story and then we're gonna move on.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: We're talking about Motherhood's Day, so it all kind of goes up to the stuff.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: So when we lived in Nebraska when I was pregnant, got pregnant with Lila.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: And I went to Target to buy a pregnancy test, and I have all the other three children with me.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: Carson was Carson as a little guy, and I'm checking out, and he is running out the door.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: Oh and he's four.
- 6:16unknown: Oh no.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: And so here I am with three kids and a pregnancy test, and the lady's just looking at me.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Yep.
- 6:23SPEAKER_04: There we go.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: It's like mind your own business.
- 6:26SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: There's no self-checkout.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: There's no delivery.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: You know, you got you guys got it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: You guys have the line.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: So funny.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: You don't have to be judged by any checkout lady.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: I took a pregnancy test in the Schnockz bathroom.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: You wanted to know what's in the store too.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: I was like, I was right before we took Graham to school.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I was like, all right, guys, let's go in the bathroom.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: That's were you just like so anxious to know?
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: Oh wow.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Is this with Zayn?
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Third, third time.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Third surprise.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Okay, so we are talking today about contending for our children and their spiritual life, not physically fighting them at home when they're three and crying all the time.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Contending at them.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Not contending to add them.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: For them.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: For them.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: And last week I've been reading Nehemiah.
- 7:20unknown: Oh, I love Nehemiah.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: And which I've read before, and I was like, I just want to do something in the Old Testament because I've been in the New Testament so much.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: And I was reading in Nehemiah, let's see.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: I think it's in three where they're rebuilding the walls.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: And oh no, no, no, no.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: I'm wrong about that.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Um it's Nehemiah 4 at the very end.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Or I can't see because I'm old.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Um, for goodness sake.
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Anyway, it's the end 23, 23, 23, 24.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: It says, um he's saying, once they're um the enemies are coming, and now this is how they were building the wall and being on guard.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: And he says, not I, nor my relatives, nor my servants, nor my guards who were with me ever took our clothes off.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: We carried our weapons with us at all times, even we went for water.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: And that line just stuck out to me like wow, they literally just stayed how they were.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: It doesn't really say I'm sure that's us say days, I just don't know it now.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: Vigilant, that's a great word.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: That's why we have you here, because you're the English professor, English teacher.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: Um that they stayed vigilant at all times.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: Everyone, everyone, his relatives, the servants, the guards, everyone who was with them stayed vigilant at all times.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: And then Casey said something about our kids.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: This was in like a couple podcasts ago for the church.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Oh, we need I just want a refresher on what it's like to contend for your children.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: And we all have different ages in here.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Mine, I have eight-year-old all the way up to 27-year-old, and I'm a grandma.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: And so then we have Jess.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Tell us how old your kids are.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Uh Zayn is seven, he's in second grade.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Scout is almost 12, and Graham is 13.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Matea, here's our newbie.
- 9:14SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 9:15SPEAKER_06: I have Manny, he's one and a half, and then I'm pregnant with number two.
- 9:20SPEAKER_06: It is small.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: And then Casey.
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: Um, I have Summit is three and a boy, and then Hazel is six, and Sage is eight.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, I've I genuinely think three and twelve are the worst ages of children.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: Well, universally, boy or girl, it doesn't matter.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Three-year-olds are funny and hilarious, but they're also just so hard.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: It's definitely harder at three.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 9:49SPEAKER_04: But also so cute and so funny.
- 9:51SPEAKER_04: So funny and like understands everything.
- 9:53SPEAKER_04: Funniest things.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: He, yeah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: It's like something an honest question is so condescending.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: You're like, good observation, I guess.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: That's even when they're like, Mom, why does your arm jiggle like grandma's?
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: I was like, thanks, guys.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Say less.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Tell me I'm old.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: Thanks a lot.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: So funny.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Um, so I want to know like what it is that you guys, when you think about contending for your children, what that means to you, what does that look like practically to you?
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: I have some biblical examples that we're gonna go through, and then also some practical steps that we can put into place in our own lives to be contending for our kids.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: Because honestly, at any age, I think you have to contend for your children forever.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: From cradle to grade.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Forever.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: Because even when they're out of your house, there's still things you're gonna be worried about or you need to pray for them about, like, and you're not an authority over them anymore, but you're a voice of wisdom for them and a still a safe place to land.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: Like, there's just mothering just never ends.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: It's so lovely and great, but it's so tiring.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: It's the best and the hardest.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: It's the best and the hardest.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: So is being a wife.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: I think that yes.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Um just that word contend means to compete for something, to struggle against a difficulty, or assert something as an earnest truth in an argument.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And I think that like having middle schoolers now like to assert something as an earnest truth, like they're constantly arguing with me about what's true or what what I don't understand or what they get that I'm so out of touch with.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: It's I'm gonna struggle with that phase.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: But I think that like it's the struggle.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: It's the it's the struggling and being firm and kind that strengthens them.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: Like the struggle is what makes people grow.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: It's like a butterfly.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: It's the they're they're coming out of their cocoon and it will make them strong in the Lord.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Like I have to keep telling you the truth, even though you want to tell me your version of truth.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: But I have to keep telling you the truth.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: I have have to keep firm, consistent rules in our house, even when you think they're stupid.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Because they they don't know.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: And I think the tendency is like you grow weary in doing good parenting.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: And so it's easy to be like, just do whatever.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't care.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: I that happens often.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: But especially with like these milestones in life, and as they get older, it's like, man, like firm and kind.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: That is that's the that's my mantra.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know that I'm always that, but that's my goal.
- 12:41SPEAKER_04: I was unkind yesterday.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: So and this morning.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 12:47SPEAKER_04: True confessions.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: I said sorry.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: I always say sorry.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: Like my bad.
- 12:52SPEAKER_04: I was thinking too after you mentioned Jeremiah when they talked about their weapons, and I was like, okay, well, Nehemiah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_04: When I I was just thinking, what are my weapons?
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: So if I am first, you know how like too.
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: They say things like, Are you hydrated?
- 13:08SPEAKER_04: Are you rested?
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: Like, are you offering them like a bad you know, format to begin with?
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's like I have zero self-care and now I'm gonna come try to be a nice mom.
- 13:19SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, I'm tired and hungry and thirsty, and yeah, you know, so I think of it on a physical, but we are told in the Bible what our weapons are.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: So I'm like, okay, I'm not literally carrying a sword or like a TV shield thing, so they don't see or hear anything bad, but my weapons are the word of God, peace in my home, prayer, the truth.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: So I think also it always correlates when I'm lacking in my mind being in those things or in the word.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: I'm always having bad mom days.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah where I'm like, oh, that was not so good.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: So keep the weapons.
- 14:00SPEAKER_06: That's good.
- 14:01SPEAKER_06: Right now, I think well, the past two weeks have taught me that I need to pray for my one and a half year old more, for not just his spiritual health or protection, but physical protection.
- 14:19SPEAKER_06: Oh my goodness.
- 14:20SPEAKER_06: Well, it's just like simple, you know, it's not that age too, that he just climbing.
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 14:24SPEAKER_06: I mean, seven days straight, we just had an injury every single day, like blood, uh busted chin, busted lip.
- 14:34SPEAKER_06: And then one day it was um he, I think, like dislocated his wrist and elbow.
- 14:43SPEAKER_06: And it was my fault.
- 14:45SPEAKER_06: Because I was being, you know, a fun mom and trying to pick him up and for like 24 hours his arm.
- 14:53SPEAKER_06: Uh and you know, I was like, okay, you know what?
- 14:55SPEAKER_06: Because it's my not just because it's my fault, but you know, doctors are expensive.
- 15:03SPEAKER_06: And who wants to do it?
- 15:04SPEAKER_06: And who wants you like he can't even sleep, he can't really, you know, and the only advice they I love doctors, thank you, but the only advice they gave me was to elevate it and do an x-ray.
- 15:15SPEAKER_06: He's like, well, he's one, so he's one and a half, that's really hard to elevate.
- 15:19SPEAKER_06: So I'm like, okay, that's the only time you're watching TV all night, I guess.
- 15:22unknown: Yeah.
- 15:23SPEAKER_06: So I was like, So still don't do anything.
- 15:25SPEAKER_06: But I prayed really hard all morning, no, all night and all morning.
- 15:30SPEAKER_06: And I remember I was like in my car, and I'm like, okay, Lord, if you're trying and this was the week that I had like things planned at night I was really excited for that I could do alone as a mom.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: I was like, yay! I'm like, okay, are you teaching me something?
- 15:49SPEAKER_06: Then fine.
- 15:49SPEAKER_06: I don't need to do these things.
- 15:51SPEAKER_06: Five minutes later, he is like moving his.
- 15:54SPEAKER_06: I'm like, thank you.
- 15:55SPEAKER_06: So now I'm just like in constant prayer over him.
- 16:00SPEAKER_06: But not just physically, but like spiritually too.
- 16:04SPEAKER_06: Of I don't know, there's some weird things that have been happening in my house.
- 16:08SPEAKER_06: It's October.
- 16:09SPEAKER_06: So this is every time.
- 16:12SPEAKER_06: I blame it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: October.
- 16:13SPEAKER_06: His toys never go off in the middle of night.
- 16:16SPEAKER_06: And all of a sudden they all did.
- 16:18SPEAKER_06: That's so creepy.
- 16:19SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, you know what?
- 16:20SPEAKER_06: I get in there and I'm like, whatever's in here, get out in the name of Jesus.
- 16:24SPEAKER_06: I don't have time for this.
- 16:25SPEAKER_06: I need to go to bed.
- 16:26SPEAKER_06: I'm creating another human.
- 16:28SPEAKER_06: I need my rest.
- 16:28SPEAKER_06: I'm creating another human.
- 16:30SPEAKER_06: I'm like, I rebuke you.
- 16:33SPEAKER_06: Uh, but like stuff, but it's like reminders of okay, I really just because he's one and a half doesn't mean it's too early to like intercede for him, pray on his behalf.
- 16:46SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 16:47SPEAKER_06: And so that's what I've been learning of like, okay, this is my weapon in this season.
- 16:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Well, and it's that whole men, like mental picture.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, scriptures talk about it.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Like, there are bowls in heaven with the prayers of the saints.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: And it's like, this is your insurance, right?
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Like you're daily praying those things for their future, for their not to be a fortune teller, but with your trust in the Lord.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Like, God, I'm asking you to do these things to protect my kids for their future, to bring them the right spouse, to give them pure hearts, to teach them how to put the armor of God on.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Not because they're doing it at one and a half, but because you're you're sowing those seeds for their future, you know?
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: And it does like when you're saying your weapons are peace, like having peace in your home, when you do those things regularly, not that it's like, and I prayed and now it's perfect, but like it gives you peace.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: It helps you to retain peace.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: It gives you you can hold your peace in those moments of chaos because I mean the enemy is just like, I would like to bring chaos into your life at all times, you know?
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: I have some examples of some moms in scripture that were contending for their kids in different ways.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: Um, and so I'm just gonna talk about them and we can discuss however we want.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Um I have but you know what?
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say that thought last.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say that thought last.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Let me start that.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, so Hannah in Isaiah 1.11 um desperately wants a child, praying for a child.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: God gives her a child, and then she makes a commitment to raise him for the Lord and give him back to the Lord.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: And she does that.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: You can read that in 1 Samuel 1 27 through um 2.2 and then 2 Timothy.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: Um, Timothy, we know, has a Egyptian dad and then a Jewish mom and grandma in 2 Timothy 1.5.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: Um it's because of his mom and grandma that he learned about the Lord, learned his Jewish heritage because it did not come from his dad, his dad wouldn't have known.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Um and it's because they taught him, and he becomes one of Paul's prominent companions.
- 19:04SPEAKER_03: And then the Shunammite woman, which is probably one of my favorite stories, Second Kings um 4, 18 through 37, um she fought for the life of her dead child.
- 19:16SPEAKER_03: She goes out to Elijah or Elijah.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: I should have I don't have the story open for me.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: And she says, No, you I didn't you gave me something I didn't even ask for.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: And so you are gonna come and pray for him.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: Like, don't send your helper, you are gonna come and do it.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: Like she fought for that.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: That's a great that's such a mom, too.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: It's just such a mom move, but it's also like every time it just proves like God put moms on earth for a reason, and it's because we are also to be guiding our children, we are also to be teaching our children, and we are supposed to be contending for our children too.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Um, and then Moses' mom, she and that's Hebrews 11, 23.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Um, she goes against the government to protect her child.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: And sometimes I think we're not like we can think we're not supposed to do these things, but it's like, no, we have biblical examples of these women who were fighting for their children, fighting for their faith, fighting for their safety, um, fighting to have a child, all of it.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: And um, there are so many different ways that it looks like we can contend, and contending will look different every season of your life.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: So what it does, what Matea is doing now with with infants, you're gonna do that because you have boys.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: You have to pay for protection at all all the days.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: All the days.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: Um, but that's gonna look different when they're 12, yeah, you know, than it does when he is one and a half.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: Um so Jess, I wanted to know like how is your contending changed over the years?
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: Because you've gone from now having little kids to now, you're like in the I always thought that's like the sweet spot of parenting, which I have to remind myself that I'm there again too, with eight-year-olds.
- 21:03SPEAKER_03: They kind of you're you're on the edge now because you have a 13-year-old, but they listen for the most part what you're saying, you make every decision for them, what they're eating, what they're wearing, what they're watching, what they're listening to.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: They don't really have quite the mind of their own yet, they're not driving places.
- 21:20SPEAKER_03: So, but from toddlers to now, it has to has changed.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: So, how does that look for you?
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think so much of this has to do with my personality too, because I I long for them to be like me.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: You know, I I assume that they will be social, I assume that they will be um just like want to go do everything.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: And some of my kids do.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: And then my prayer a lot has been, Lord, let me learn my kids and appreciate them.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Because in the world where you see everyone's kids constantly, sometimes It's very easy for me to compare.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: And it's very easy for me to say, Well, I wish they were doing that.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: And why, why?
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And this is why I tell my kids you're not having social media, because it's hard for me to look at other people's lives and be content.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: So no, I'm not letting you look at somebody else and know where they were all weekend.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Um, but for me, just saying, like, Lord, this kid seems to be more of an introvert.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: I don't understand that.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: I don't understand why anyone would recharge alone.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Kelly is laughing.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: But that's more like their dad.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: And it those those like learning those differences before asking God to help me appreciate it, I would be so irritated and just so frustrated to see not me in them.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: And um that prayer has has definitely helped me to just say, like, God, I want to appreciate who you made my kids to be because you made them that way.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And I can uh guide and manipulate sometimes for it to look like the way I want it to look.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: But God, I want them to be who you created created them to be.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: I want them to thrive the way you want them to thrive.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: And just seeing the changes in all of them, I really have to say less and pray more because I really have a lot of words.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: So many words.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Do you keep did you say me too?
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: What?
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Did you just say that?
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: I'm a speecher.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: And Hayden's like, I don't think they're listening to your speech.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: Like um if I'm mad.
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: It's a long You're a lecturer.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: You're a lecturer.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: Kevin will look at me at the dinner table and be like, I think that's good.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: Hayden has asked me before, he's like, what are you, how are you wanting them to respond when you're and I'm like, I don't know.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:51SPEAKER_04: I'm just still mad.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Well, Kevin is also a talker too.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: So we will be across the room and he'll he usually will wait and then like step in and then he'll go on a thing.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I think we're all right.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, good.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: So you take turns.
- 24:07SPEAKER_04: So you know it's like our kids are sick of us now.
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: So sick of us.
- 24:12SPEAKER_04: Well, then they're just staring at you.
- 24:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:14SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, do you even feel bad at all?
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Like I you're going.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: They don't have that that uh their brain does not function that way yet.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: No.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: No.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And like Kevin will ask them a question and they don't know that they're supposed to be like responding.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, they don't know what to say right now.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: No, they're just staring at the crazy person.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: You're and we just keep on.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: I cannot stop my speech.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: But I said to Scout this morning, I was like, we're talking about parenting on the podcast.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: What what do you think we should say?
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: And she goes, just say it.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Like, just not so much, so much talking.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: Like you just like say what you want.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Yeah.
- 24:56SPEAKER_04: That was not helpful to Scout.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: It's a podcast.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: You know something you mentioned first.
- 25:03SPEAKER_04: I don't know if this is a change in direction, but I think it might be beneficial to address what we believe about dedicating your child to the Lord, like specifically what we do here at church, you know, because I know we have a lot of denominational backgrounds, um, different understandings on what that is.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: And for me, and we probably all see it a little differently, for Hannah, it was literally her son now lives there forever.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: I was thinking that, like, no one would do that.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: No, yeah.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'd have red flags if your church church was like in Nehemiah when they come, now they come and they make a um, and like once you get to chapter 11, 1211, somewhere like that, they make a a vow.
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: And the vow is to give their oldest son.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: Nobody's making that vow.
- 25:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: Today.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: So we use the wording, we say baby dedications, and we've got tons of them.
- 25:57SPEAKER_04: Um so many babies.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: But um, I think people, I'll just say, I'm not gonna take an exact poll of people that I would think this about.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: I think we use it as a baby announcement, is what it is before your church.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: I think that's primarily what it is.
- 26:12SPEAKER_04: Like, we want to show our baby like they're new, like we want to raise them to be Christian, like, look at it, the baby.
- 26:17SPEAKER_04: And it's not about the baby at all.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: Um, but I in my mind, I was like, what's my responsibility?
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: If I'm sitting in the room and your family is up and having a baby dedication, in my mind, you're dedicating the baby to the Lord.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: And it's about the parents.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: We are saying we're gonna raise them in the word in a faith community and to know God.
- 26:36SPEAKER_04: And because I was in the room, that means everyone you stood before in your faith community, they could come and say, Hey, I've just noticed like this seems off or like permission.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: I'm worried about, yeah, I that's what I think.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: Like to me, and I've had people like that's the way I understand it, but I don't think it's done in practice.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: Unless you're doing life with people.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: And now our church is larger, so that's a little different than standing up before 30 people that know you and your mom and your grandma.
- 27:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 27:05SPEAKER_04: But still, like I just think for people, if you're listening and maybe you're considering having your baby dedicated and you're like, I wonder what that really means.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: In my opinion, I think that means the faith community gets to step alongside you and correct if they need to or encourage, or you can ask questions.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: It's an asset.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: You're saying, like, I am I am opening myself to correction.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Now that I think that's tricky too.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I think you should have those close people that know you and understand.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Everyone is allowed to correct me.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you're also getting the benefits of community.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: Like the benefit of community is I can come up to anybody in here and say, like, hey, will you contend with me for my kid?
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: I've done that many times.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Louise DeWaren, hi, yes, Jess.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Will you pray with me for this kid for this reason?
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: And God love her.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: She will send me a text, hey, I was praying for your kid for this reason.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: And like that is the benefit of the community when you are dedicating your kid.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: There was something I it's actually uh Louise's sister-in-law.
- 28:07SPEAKER_04: Um, she came up to me on a Wednesday evening.
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: We were trying to leave, and it was kind of a frazzled evening, like kids were ready to get home.
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: And she said, Hey, is your is your middle daughter feeling better?
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: And I was like, What do you, what do you mean?
- 28:22SPEAKER_04: And I had no memory of what she was talking about.
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: She goes, Well, just the other day when I saw you and I made a comment about her being tired of she apparently what happened is I was trying to hand them off to my mom.
- 28:34SPEAKER_04: My mom, my kids thought they were going to my mom instead of going to a third class or a second class.
- 28:39SPEAKER_04: No, it was in third service.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: Anyway, whatever.
- 28:41SPEAKER_04: And my mom had left.
- 28:42SPEAKER_04: Like she was only there for the first part of the day.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: And I was like, No, you're going back to class.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: And I guess Hazel was upset about it.
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: I don't remember this, but she heard me say to her, like, Nana's gone, you're going back to class.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: And Hazel was sad about it.
- 28:55SPEAKER_04: And she said, I've just been praying for her for a couple weeks that um, and all the like pastor kids that they never feel exhausted by the church or um disappointed boy.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: And I was like, this woman has been praying for Hazel for weeks, and I didn't even remember that interaction.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: And my kids do get sick of class.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Like, well, we went three times.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: Master class have it hard.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're like, we've been here all day.
- 29:17SPEAKER_04: That's why thankfully for the most part, they love it.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: But we can't, I can me.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna throw Casey in this bucket.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: I can have a little less um compassion for people who are like, well, then my kids have to be there twice.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: I'm like, yeah.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: I'm like, my kids' kids are there and batea, like they're there.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: They'll be fine.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: Multiple times all the time.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Like they'll be fine.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: They can do it.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: And we do her things if they're six and they hear the clut the lesson twice.
- 29:41SPEAKER_04: I'm telling you, Hayes knows, like, she's a very literal thinker.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: She's not a performer, she's not as whimsy or imaginative.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: She's very literal.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: She remembers the verse and the main point every single week.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, how'd you know that?
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: She's like, it's what it says on the paper.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: I'm like, you can't read.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: She just remembers.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:59SPEAKER_04: But she sits through it twice.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: So I'm like, well, perks.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: It's good for you.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: It's good for you.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: She's gonna learn it.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: Um, I have a few, and we can walk through these.
- 30:09SPEAKER_03: I have four like practical steps on how to contend.
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: And again, that's a lot of different ways.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: Like, I think it depends on how it probably depends on how you process the world as a mom, how your house works, like what you the things we allow into our lives.
- 30:26SPEAKER_03: Like when we contend, it has to be we also need to be contending for our own faith.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Because we can't give something to our children that we don't have.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: So what we watch, what we listen to, what we're reading, how much we're in the word, like how much we let our emotions run our lives, like all that stuff, like that all has to come into play.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: And so these are some steps.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: So modeling genuine faith, what that looks like.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: Let's talk about that.
- 30:51SPEAKER_03: What does that look like?
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: Like on a practical everyday step, like what does modeling genuine faith mean to you or look like to you?
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: I love that our kids wake up and see us both reading our Bible.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: I think that's the greatest thing in the world.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: It's just like them learning that we work out or we see what we eat.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Like when they see it, it does something in them.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: And when we require it of them, yeah.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Like when I read the Bible with you before you go to bed, when and when I skip it and they go, Well, it's the most important thing, Mom.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Zayn.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Thank you for the reminding me.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: You are correct.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: And then when I don't model it because I think you're 13 and you're good.
- 31:35SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: And I'm going, Hey, read your Bible.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: And he may or may not do it.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like it's like brushing their teeth.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: You're like, I might need to continue to model this with you because you might not choose it because it's just not what you prefer at the moment, but it's the most important thing.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: I do think modeling your faith, not even just modeling, but genuinely loving Jesus for yourself is the biggest because I'm not a very disciplined or routine person.
- 32:07SPEAKER_04: So they don't always catch me doing what I should be doing.
- 32:10SPEAKER_04: Um, and I don't always have the perfect routine for them.
- 32:13SPEAKER_04: Like there's not a set time where we're doing the things I wish we were doing with them, like reading and stuff like that.
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: But they do hear, I mean, if it's Hayden and I are worried about something or thinking about someone, they do always hear us, like our conversations are always God all the time.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: And like, well, like the Lord hasn't like we have no control over that.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: Or so I in our everyday life, I do really love God, even though I'm not always good at the things to do for him.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: I do genuinely love him and try, you know.
- 32:46SPEAKER_04: Well, it's seasonal.
- 32:47SPEAKER_04: It's seasonal, yeah.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: We're in a weird season, but I I think that they will be you.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: I think kids become like their parents.
- 32:55SPEAKER_04: So if they're hearing the way you talk about the in-laws, they're like, Oh, we talk about people we don't like, or if they hear you talking about their teacher, or you know, like they're they are learning all that language.
- 33:06SPEAKER_04: Like, have you ever had a kid say something to you and you're like, you heard that from your mom?
- 33:09SPEAKER_04: Oh, there is no way you formulated that sentence.
- 33:11SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: Or that's what you're you know, they heard it from an adult somewhere.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: I'm like them take my excuses for why things are or aren't.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Yes.
- 33:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:22SPEAKER_06: You're welcome.
- 33:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:25SPEAKER_06: I think one thing, uh, and they didn't do it all the time, but there was a few times that I noticed, and as a mom, I notice more.
- 33:33SPEAKER_06: But my parents, when they would usually fight in front of us, they would forgive in front of us.
- 33:40SPEAKER_06: So then we would, you know.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 33:42SPEAKER_06: They would fight and then they would apologize in front of disagreements.
- 33:49SPEAKER_04: We don't hide our disagreements either.
- 33:51SPEAKER_06: But I like that of like, okay, you don't always have to maybe disagree in private, but if you do it in front of your kids, maybe show them the forgiveness in front of, you know, as well.
- 34:04SPEAKER_06: It's like, oh, I forgive.
- 34:05SPEAKER_06: And Casey, you I feel like you are do a good job of this, of like um apologizing for your actions for doing a lot.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Thanks.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: It's so hard for me to think that way of you though.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: It's good to see when you like I had a bad mom day, I was like, what?
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: It takes a lot.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: Like you're always good.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: You're always smiling.
- 34:28SPEAKER_04: I'm usually pretty chill.
- 34:29SPEAKER_04: I think my kids are the one and only thing that can set me off.
- 34:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: I think you're a good, I don't mean this in a critical way.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: You're a good ignorer.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Like you can have a conversation with me.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: And like I'm going, does she hear any of them?
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: She doesn't.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: She's totally focused.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: That's you don't.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: You know why?
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: We're trained to tune out the noise.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: I think you wouldn't talk to anybody else if you couldn't tune out the noise.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: That's so funny.
- 34:57SPEAKER_06: I do ignore my mom always taught me, like, if I wanted to, because I was a talker growing up, I always had a lot of questions.
- 35:03SPEAKER_06: That if I wanted to interrupt her when she was talking to her friends, I would have to put my hand on her shoulder and wait.
- 35:09SPEAKER_06: I've actually told my youth girls to do that to me because they always interrupt me.
- 35:13SPEAKER_06: So you have like youth girls to put your hand on your touching you.
- 35:17SPEAKER_06: I will look at you when I'm talking when I'm ready.
- 35:20SPEAKER_04: That's funny to teach my youth thing.
- 35:24SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna announce that at all of church if everyone just kidding.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Dane will do that while I'm reading.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: He'll go.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Tap tap.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: Um, Mom.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: I'm like, do you want me to read the story?
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: And then the other day we were watching something and it was about how kids need to, at night, they have a lot in their brain.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: And they get it all out before they go, it helps them to go to sleep.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: He goes, That's like me, mom.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: That's why I tap you all the time.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: I got I got a lot to get out.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, oh like I was yelling at you.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Do they have out all day long?
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 35:59unknown: I don't know.
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: We always laugh and we're angry because we'll do all things, get them covered up, and we're trying right when we're about to shut the door, but like all of the well, the two girls they share a room and it's just and then and I shut the door and we're like, what are they talking about?
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: We just took them in.
- 36:19SPEAKER_04: All the stories they have to tell.
- 36:21SPEAKER_04: You know what though, when you describe that about Zane and the thing you read, that is Hazel.
- 36:27SPEAKER_04: She does need like me to sit and listen to her.
- 36:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 36:31SPEAKER_04: I need to start maybe having a time before bed.
- 36:34SPEAKER_04: But then again, if I'm rushed, now I'm just yelling that you have to brush your teeth right now.
- 36:38SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 36:39SPEAKER_04: Like we are going to sleep now.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: I don't want to talk to you anymore.
- 36:41SPEAKER_04: It's already past your bedtime.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: When you're just tired.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: They're like, Are you gonna pray for me?
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: No, Dad will be home in a second.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: He'll do it when he gets home.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna pray for you in my head.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: But that's how I feel about my big kids because I'm like, I just did that for like 30 minutes with Zane.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: And can you like and they then they want to stay up later because they're older.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: I'm like, just go to bed.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: Everyone, just go to sleep.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: Um, the next one is creating faithful markers.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: And that's meaning, um, well, it could mean actually something in your house that you look at that's a marker, but also like Sean did this weekend so well, is telling the story about how his family was helped through and saved, came to Christ.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: So, like reminding your kids like like I remember a specific time in my life.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: I was in high school, I can't tell you how what like age, probably young high school, freshman and sophomore maybe.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: And my dad owns his own business and always has.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: And he had been waiting for a payment to come through on he used to sell machines, and it wasn't coming, it was Christmas time.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: And so they sat us down like I was like a week and a half before Christmas or something.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: And he was like, We're not gonna be able to have Christmas gifts this year, but once like the money comes through or whatever, we will, you know.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: And and I can remember growing up and seeing my dad physically kneeling at his bed all the time.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: And I don't know the details of the story, but somehow, anyway, the money came through or money showed up in the mail, whatever.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: But I can remember like going back and then talking about that years past, you know, like this is what the Lord did.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: And so it's and there's I you guys might know the actual scripture reference, but where it was like in one generation removed, Israel no longer knew their history, their story, because no one was telling stories.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: And so that's what that means, creating faith markers.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: Remember, it's just telling stories to your kids about how God has worked in your family's life or rescued you from whatever it is, if it was sickness or it's financial, even if it was just like I didn't know the Lord and then I did.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: Like when you know, God the scales fell off your eyes, or and then you were saved, or however.
- 38:51SPEAKER_03: But um, that's just a really practical, practical way to keep that conversation going in your house and then contending for your kids and teaching them faith.
- 39:00SPEAKER_03: That teaches them to continue to have faith in God because He's done He's done it once, he'll do it again.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: And telling and just being honest.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Just be just be honest.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: I just think like keep family secrets.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: No, and I have I have friends who I'm like, oh well, what do your kids think about this?
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: They're like, we just don't talk about it.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, oh my gosh, I feel like my kids know everything.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: And you have to use wisdom and discernment and all of that.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: But like when they know the stories, they can, it doesn't have to happen to them for them to take that faith on.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Because like Kevin and I were both pastors' kids.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: We had those stories where our parents would call us and say, like, we need a thousand dollars by tomorrow, or we don't have any groceries, and the checks would come in the mail or people would drop off groceries or whatever.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: And I love those stories because they built my faith.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: I I knew that God would always provide.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: So I tell my kids those stories and they have that same faith.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: They don't have the same situation, but I always tell them, I'm like, listen, God will provide for you the friends that you need, the surrounding like provision isn't always just money.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: You can always trust that God will provide.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: Because that's his nature, that's what he does.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: And it's just like they need, yeah, be honest with your kids.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: Tell them the stories.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: Like, you don't have to be perfect people to be godly parents.
- 40:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 40:28SPEAKER_04: I think they need to hear about when you've messed up.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: I've told my kids a lot.
- 40:32SPEAKER_04: Oh, sorry, Sage kind of just had her first girl drama.
- 40:35SPEAKER_04: It was, it was mild, but some girls' feelings were hurt, and she whatever.
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: It doesn't matter.
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: And I was like, What'd you do?
- 40:42SPEAKER_04: And she goes, Well, I didn't really talk about it because I didn't want her to say I said something I didn't say.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: And I was like, Well, that was actually perfect.
- 40:48SPEAKER_04: And I said, Don't don't ever get into that.
- 40:50SPEAKER_04: Like, say you did tell your side to another friend, and then she said, Well, Sage said this.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: Now for her to go around and say, Sage, just talking about my back or behind my back, that would be a true statement, right?
- 40:58SPEAKER_04: Because you are sharing your side.
- 40:59SPEAKER_04: So I was like, just stay out of it.
- 41:01SPEAKER_04: But um, I've started sharing with her stories where like I lied to my mom and had a tummy ache or whatever, or like I didn't make the right decision.
- 41:10SPEAKER_04: My friends were doing something and I was too embarrassed to call my mom.
- 41:13SPEAKER_04: So I just like stayed.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: And so I want her to know that I've made the wrong decision too.
- 41:20SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 41:20SPEAKER_04: And so I can relate when she feels, you know, like she's in a hard place.
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: But yeah, they need to know, know your testimony.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: And they need to know other people's testimony because I might not have something, but my brother might, or my best friends might.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: And these are trusted people that I feel okay, you having those conversations with.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: I heard a podcast, it's probably been two years ago, maybe, and it was like, always tell the truth to your kids because they'll learn that my mom will always tell me the truth.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: Like, don't sugarcoat it, don't tiptoe around it, just say it like it is.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: And kids usually they can take it like that.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, age appropriate, you know, use age appropriate words, but like and they're like, Oh, okay.
- 42:03SPEAKER_03: And they just move on.
- 42:04SPEAKER_03: Like, they usually don't make a big deal out of it, but they know my mom will always tell me the truth, no matter what I can trust her, or my dad.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: It goes for both parents.
- 42:12SPEAKER_04: If they ask one, I either can't answer or I've given them as much information.
- 42:15SPEAKER_04: I always say, like, there's more to that.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: Like, that's a very good question.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: There's more to it, but I won we'll talk about it later.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Like, maybe when you're older, or like let's let's just the two of us another time talk about it.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it's still not like lying or making up a pretend story.
- 42:28SPEAKER_04: It's just like, hey, there is, you're right.
- 42:29SPEAKER_04: That was a good observation.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: There's more to that.
- 42:31SPEAKER_04: We'll talk later.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: Um, another one is um engage in God conversations, which we've kind of covered in those two things, but like always bringing up or like thinking of ways you can bring up both what does the Bible say about that, or how you know, like that kind of stuff, or just always bringing up biblical truths in any conversation.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: He's not Sunday, he's a part of our regular life.
- 42:57SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes, and then this is a big one participate together, not just in church.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: Also in church, but not just in church and in your home.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: So you're always participating in faith activities together.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: So praying in your home, talking about Jesus in your home, making faith markers, telling stories, modeling your faith, allowing their children, your children to model their faith and walk them through that.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: Um, Casey, I had a question for you, and I think this is okay to say maybe I'll reword it a different way.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: You I know you grew up in a home where your mom's faith and your dad's faith were different that way.
- 43:40SPEAKER_03: Um I think that even if you are living in that situation right now where it's either mom has faith and dad doesn't, or vice versa, that it's very important for the parent that has the faith to still walk out these steps.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: So even if so, let's say you're the mom in the situation, it's still Very important to walk out these steps, even if your husband is an unbeliever.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: So make your ch get your kids up and make them to go to church.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: And if they're like, that doesn't go, you're like, I don't care.
- 44:09SPEAKER_03: We go.
- 44:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: Like my house will go.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 44:13SPEAKER_03: And so, how does that look like with one spouse where one spouse has a stronger faith than the other?
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: Um, or one parent attends and one parent doesn't attend church.
- 44:24SPEAKER_04: Well, I think it was really cool to watch.
- 44:27SPEAKER_04: I I mean, if you're in that boat, my mom is a wonderful person to talk to.
- 44:31SPEAKER_04: I'll get you her number if anyone wants to talk to her.
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: Um, she did an amazing job at um not our lives weren't separate.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: So we didn't have like church life versus home life.
- 44:41SPEAKER_04: Like the things I wasn't allowed to like listen to, participate in, watch wasn't different with church friends than home friends.
- 44:49SPEAKER_04: Like I my mom was always the same.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: Like the standard for me was always the same.
- 44:54SPEAKER_04: My language didn't change, like the boundaries, the values of our life didn't change.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: And then I mean, we did, we did the daily.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: I saw her reading her devotional every morning.
- 45:05SPEAKER_04: We did the chicken soup for the soul books in the morning before school.
- 45:09SPEAKER_04: She would always too, it was just, I think it was just very practical.
- 45:12SPEAKER_04: I don't know if she did anything extra magic.
- 45:14SPEAKER_04: She just was very faithful and consistent.
- 45:16SPEAKER_04: And I remember um most of my like big milestone moments of like a huge, I don't know if it's theological, but like a huge understanding I have of being a Christian, knowing God, were things that I would bring back from school and be like, Well, this happened.
- 45:32SPEAKER_04: And one of the things she told me was, I wonder what's going on in that person's life.
- 45:36SPEAKER_04: Like we should, or one time we had a horrible waitress.
- 45:39SPEAKER_04: Like, I still remember, we've been really young, and she like pointed out to us, do you notice?
- 45:43SPEAKER_04: Like this lady did this.
- 45:44SPEAKER_04: Remember, she did that.
- 45:45SPEAKER_04: And then she said that she pointed out to us so we could recognize that she was doing a bad job.
- 45:49SPEAKER_04: And then she was like, Let's pray for her with our meal, and like, let's give her a good tip, whatever.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: And so I think she helped me to see God moments all the time.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they were never separate.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: Like, we didn't, we weren't strict on church attendance.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: If we were going on a family camping trip, oh, right.
- 46:05SPEAKER_04: We went camping, you know.
- 46:07SPEAKER_04: So like family came first a lot.
- 46:10SPEAKER_04: So it's not like she was this like every time the doors were open, we are there.
- 46:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, although we were because we wanted to be.
- 46:15SPEAKER_04: So I don't remember it being rigid or hard.
- 46:18SPEAKER_04: It's just it was consistent.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: It was always who she was, and it was always who we were.
- 46:22SPEAKER_06: That's good.
- 46:22SPEAKER_04: So it was good.
- 46:23SPEAKER_06: And I think it makes it easy when your identity as a mom is in God and like you're passionate about Jesus, then it will just naturally come out of like this is where we lean to the Bible.
- 46:39SPEAKER_06: This is where we it's not like it's more of a want than a must.
- 46:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 46:45SPEAKER_02: And you know, and when you start to She was the church.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she was being in the church.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: It's so true.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: And when you start to see those those things come out in your kids where they're kind of bent more, um, like Zayn has a heart for the homeless.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: Like, how do you like have cash on hand for him to give to the person?
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: Like make homeless packs, all of those things where you're like, God, I see you doing this in my child.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: Help me to foster that in them.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Help me to guide them in that.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: This is where you being a feeler mom comes in really, really handy.
- 47:23SPEAKER_02: It has its downfall.
- 47:26SPEAKER_03: No, but that's a plus.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: Because because I'm not a feeler mom, and we see homeless people all the you don't have to go far from where we live to see them.
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: Um, and the girls will be like, Well, what do you mean they don't have a house?
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: I'm like, Yeah, but and I'll be like, But do you guys sometimes people just choose to live that way?
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: Like, this is me.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: I'm like black and white.
- 47:44SPEAKER_03: Like they choose to be there every day, but this is their job, and they come every day, single day and show up for a job.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: But like, I'm not like, well, maybe we should make packs because I don't feel it.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna take some feeling on.
- 47:55SPEAKER_00: Well, I do have the same conversations that say, and you know, sometimes it looks like these people are just fine.
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: And you see the people who look like they're very they're really struggling, and then you see the people who look really normal.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: I said, This is where you have to be obedient to what the Lord says.
- 48:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and we're we're doing this out of obedience to the Lord because Jesus says the poor will always be with us.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: We don't have to know what they're gonna do.
- 48:22SPEAKER_00: This is about our heart, and because there are times when I like I'm like, I don't know.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: You have them very clean clothes, yeah, or you've just switched spots with the person or the other.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: But whatever I want my heart to care for the needy.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: I um oh, I had this thought too, and I just wanted to kind of end with this.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: But I see you have a book and I brought a book that I want to talk about because I am in love with it, and I just got it.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: It's a kid book.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: Um I was just thinking the other day just about um moms who maybe have children that aren't walking with the Lord the way they want to, or maybe they're far from the Lord, however that looks.
- 49:01SPEAKER_03: But I had the thought, but even the disciples had to believe in Jesus.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they walked with him daily, they saw him do miracles, they were with him.
- 49:10SPEAKER_03: So, you know, all the subs away.
- 49:12SPEAKER_03: But even when it comes to Jesus dying and resurrection on the cross, even they had to make the choice to believe.
- 49:17SPEAKER_03: So even if you are a parent and you're like, I've done all of this stuff, I've modeled it all, I've like I do it, I've contended for my children, you might still have to contend with them in their adult life because even your children still have to come to the place where they're going to have to believe in Jesus, they have to be saved on their own.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: And or if they, you know, wallow around in their 20s or whatever it is, like you have to like trust God.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Like you said, if I raise them knowing you, they will come back.
- 49:48SPEAKER_03: And so that's just an encouragement today.
- 49:50SPEAKER_03: If you are a mom struggling with where your kids' faith is, that um you and the disciples had to make a choice to believe in G that Jesus was who he said he was.
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:00SPEAKER_03: So we all have to do that.
- 50:01SPEAKER_03: Um, I just got this book and I'm in love with it.
- 50:04SPEAKER_03: And so I heard it's on a podcast, and it's from Carmen Joy Imes and Nijay Gupta, and it's all it's called Fierce and Faithful.
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: You can get it on Amazon right now.
- 50:15SPEAKER_03: It's all stories of women in the Bible.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: It's 25.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: And the one, well, first of all, I love it because it's all girls, but one of the reasons I got it for my girls, and it's just a storybook, so they're very like one page, maybe a half page, and it has like um let's see.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: It has the woman from Shunam, it has Abigail, it has Hannah, Ruth, but it also has like Deborah and JL.
- 50:43SPEAKER_03: We read this one last night, me and the girls.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: And so it's so I know.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: I was like, and Maya got a little bored.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: I'm like, wait, this is the best part.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just hold on, it's the best part.
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: Um, but one of the reasons I am so passionate about it is because I opened one of their kids' Bibles not long ago, and we were like, and it was like a kid kid one, right?
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: And so they're looking through, like, well, where are the girls at?
- 51:06SPEAKER_03: And I was like, You're right.
- 51:07SPEAKER_03: This is all boys in this Bible.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: Where are the girls?
- 51:11SPEAKER_03: So this is like all the girls that were faithful, a lot of women that were faithful and had to do hard things when God called them to do hard things, and it's so easy for them to read.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: So it's it's really geared towards like eight to 12 year olds, I think.
- 51:23SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's again it's called Fierce and Faithful.
- 51:27SPEAKER_03: Yes, it's on Amazon.
- 51:28SPEAKER_03: Carmen Joy Imes, I M E S.
- 51:30SPEAKER_03: Nice.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: So, and then Jess, you have a book.
- 51:33SPEAKER_03: I just wanted you to I love this book.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: It's by Mark Batterson.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: It's called Pray in Circles Around the Lives of Your Children.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: And it's just it's very practical.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: And it he does a lot of stuff with his family that I was like, whoa, bro.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: That's a lot.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: But um like pray things?
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: Like make a family crest or like Oh, yeah, we don't have time for that.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: No.
- 51:54SPEAKER_04: We have a subscription to those Kiwi Co boxes from my grandparents.
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: Mm-mm.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: I don't like them.
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: What is it's a lot of work.
- 52:00SPEAKER_04: It's like science, physics projects, experiments, art projects.
- 52:05SPEAKER_04: They're wonderful.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: I'm sad.
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: My kids still like them.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: Natalie does them with my kids.
- 52:13SPEAKER_04: That's yeah, yeah.
- 52:15SPEAKER_04: And then I throw them in the trash.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: But these are just like these are uh it comes from a Jewish tradition, praying circles.
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: Um, a Jewish uh tradition story, a man named Hani prayed for rain, and he said, I won't come out of this circle until it rains.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: And so just he just says the greatest legacy you can leave is a life of prayer for your kids.
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: And he talks about the legacy of his father-in-law praying on his knees every day.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: And um it just and he has short little things that he did.
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: I pray prayed that his son would love God and love girls, prayed that his daughter would have a godly spouse, you know, just simple things that it's just very practical.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: It was very helpful for me.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: And it it felt like when I was had really young kids that I was praying those things for the future for them.
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: I also feel like I want to know things to pray for my kids.
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: There's another journaling thing called the prayer warrior mama's journal.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: And I do it every day because I don't know what to pray.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: And like this morning it was like pray that they would um know how to stand.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: And it was like how to pray the armor of God over them.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: And then but it's for five years, so like yeah, it's excellent.
- 53:38SPEAKER_03: Good.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: Well, this I plan on this being a series, a mini-series.
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: So Casey's the only one that knows.
- 53:45SPEAKER_03: I plan on next time having two special guests.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: They don't know it yet, but I'm hoping they tell me yes when I ask them.
- 53:52SPEAKER_03: They will they have to.
- 53:53SPEAKER_03: I think they will have to do.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: So, and it will be a great one.
- 53:56SPEAKER_03: So you don't want to miss it.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: So, Jess, do you mind praying for us?
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: God, we just thank you that you are the ultimate parent.
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: And um, you gave us that example, and you gave us a million examples in the Bible of women and parents who pursued their kids, gave their kids back to you.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: God, we just pray that um we would reflect that in the lives of our families, that you would show us how to be moms that stand in prayer for our kids, that rest in the control that you have as God of the create of creation over our whole family.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: God, that you would just show us um how to love like Jesus, that we would be patient and kind and exhibit the fruits of the Spirit in our family in Jesus' name.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: Amen.
