- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The tenth Sunday after Pentecost, August 2 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:20Our sanctification, writes Dom Gaspar Lefevre, is an impossible work if we undertake it alone. Since our acts are only supernatural if they proceed from the Holy Ghost, that is what the church impresses on us today in giving us a true notion of Christian humility. Left to ourselves, we are powerless and given to sin.
- 0:51It is to God that we owe its avoidance or its pardon and that we are even able, as the epistle says, to pronounce the name of Jesus, affirming his divinity. Wherefore, in the gospel of the Pharisee and the publican, the master stigmatizes the pride which makes us put our trust in ourselves and always shows itself in our contempt for others. This pride is the enemy of God for it attributes to itself the gifts which the Holy Ghost confers on each according to his pleasure, says the epistle. And it therefore hinders his divine power from manifesting itself in us as the collect says, since it makes us imagine that we need no help. The humble soul, on the contrary, is pleased to recognize its nothingness knowing that it is only on this condition that the virtue of Christ will dwell in it.
- 2:03Commemorated today is St. Alphonsus whom God raised up in 1696. This Neapolitan nobleman, well known as a barrister, laid his sword on the altar of Our Lady of Mercy wishing to be henceforth a soldier of Jesus Christ, getting rid of worldly affairs with the sole desire of pleasing him to whom he has devoted himself. The Spirit of the Lord is upon him consecrating him and sending him to preach the gospel to the poor. He has been sent from above to bring the people to penance.
- 2:50With that object in view, he founded the congregation of the most holy Redeemer, the Redemptorists, whose members he sends, following the Savior's example, into the country, to the towns and villages, to announce the kingdom of God. He vowed never to lose a moment of his time and never in the whole of his life did he commit a mortal sin. He wrote religious works filled with erudite learning and piety and was therefore honored by the church as doctor. Emphasizing the importance of prayer and the divine plan, he condenses all the treatise on grace in one sentence. He who prays is saved.
- 3:43He who does not pray is damned. Also commemorated today is Saint Stephen the first who was beheaded by the persecutors towards the end of mass while seated in the Episcopal chair in the catacombs in the year of our Lord 02/1957. He forbade the rechristening of Christians who had been baptized by heretics. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 4:23The introit. When I call upon the lord, he will not be deaf to my appeal for help against those who attack me. The God who reigned before time was, and will reign forever, will bring them low. Cast thy burdens upon the Lord, and he will sustain thee. Hear, O God, my prayer, and spur not this plea of mine, but listen to me, and give me answer.
- 4:59Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. When I call upon the Lord, he will not be deaf to my appeal for help against those who attack me. The God who reigned before time was and will reign forever will bring them low. Cast thy burdens upon the Lord, and he will sustain thee.
- 5:37The Collect. Let us pray. O God, who dost manifest thine almighty power most chiefly in sparing and showing mercy, multiply upon us Thy mercy, that as we hasten towards Thy promises Thou mayest make us partakers of heavenly treasures. A commemoration of Saint Alphonsus Liguria. O God, who through blessed Alphonsus Mary, your confessor and bishop, fired with love for souls, enriched your church with a new family.
- 6:18We beseech you that taught by his saving councils and strengthened by his example, we may be enabled happily to come to you. A commemoration of St. Stephen the first. O God, who give us joy by the annual solemnity of blessed Stephen, thy martyr and bishop, mercifully grant that we may rejoice in his protection whose birthday we celebrate through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 7:06A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, while you were still heathen, as you can remember well enough, you let yourselves be led away wherever men would lead you to worship false gods that give no utterance. That is why I am telling you of this. Just as no one can be speaking through God's spirit if he calls Jesus accursed, So it is only through the Holy Ghost that anyone can say, Jesus is the Lord. And yet there are different kinds of gifts.
- 7:51Though it is the same spirit who gives them, just as there are different kinds of service, though it is the same Lord we serve, and different manifestations of power, though it is the same God who manifests his power everywhere in all of us. The revelation of the spirit is imparted to each to make the best advantage of it. One learns to speak with wisdom by the power of the spirit. Another to speak with knowledge with the same spirit for his rule. One through the same spirit is given faith.
- 8:33Another through the same spirit powers of healing. One can perform miracles. One can prophecy. Another can test the spirit of the prophets. One can speak in different tongues.
- 8:50Another can interpret the tongues. But all this is the work of one in the same spirit who distributes his gifts as he will to each severally. The gradual. Keep me, O Lord, as the apple of thine eye. Protect me under the shadow of thy wings.
- 9:17Let my judgment come forth from thy countenance. Let thine eyes behold the thing that is equitable. Alleluia. Alleluia. A hymn, O God, becometh thee in Zion, and a vow shall be paid to thee in Jerusalem.
- 9:37Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time, there were some who had confidence in themselves thinking they had won acceptance with God and despised the rest of the world. To them, Jesus addressed this parable. Two men went up into the temple to pray.
- 10:08One was a Pharisee, the other a publican. The Pharisee stood upright and made this prayer in his heart. I thank thee, God, that I am not like the rest of men who steal and cheat and commit adultery or like this publican here. For myself, I fast twice in the week. I give tithes of all that I possess.
- 10:41And the publican stood far off. He would not even lift up his eyes towards heaven. He only beat his breast and said, God, be merciful to me. I am a sinner. I tell you, this man went back home higher in God's favor than the other.
- 11:09Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and the man who humbles himself shall be exalted. The Offeratory To thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. In thee, O my God, I put my trust. Let me not be ashamed, neither let mine enemies laugh at me, for none of them that wait on you shall be confounded. The secret.
- 11:47Let the appointed sacrifice be offered to you, O Lord, which thou hast arranged to be offered to the honour of thy name in such wise that it may be a remedy to us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of St. Alphonsus Liguori. O Lord Jesus Christ, who granted to St.
- 12:24Alphonsus Mary to celebrate this rite and thereby offered himself as a holy victim to you. Consume our hearts by the heavenly fire of this sacrifice, so that it may ascend as a sweet fragrance unto you, who liveth and reigneth with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Stephen the first. Sanctify, O Lord, the offerings devoted to thee, and appeased by the intercession of blessed Stephen, thy martyr and bishop, and likewise by this sacrifice, look favorably upon us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 13:29Amen. The Preface of the Most Holy Trinity. Just it is and fitting right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, who together with Thine only begotten Son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord, not in the oneness of a single person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by thy revelation of thy glory, the same do we believe of thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost without difference or separation so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. In praise of which the angels and archangels, the cherubim also and Seraphim day by day exalt without end with one voice saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 14:57Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Thou wilt accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations, and holocausts upon thine altar, O Lord.
- 15:25The Post Communion. Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Lord our God, that in thy goodness thou wilt not deprive of thine aid those whom thou dost not cease to renew with your divine sacraments. A commemoration of St. Alphonsus Ligori.
- 15:51O God, who made St. Alphonsus Mary, your confessor and bishop, a faithful dispenser of this divine sacrament, grant by his merits and prayers that your faithful may frequently receive it and receiving it, praise it forever. A commemoration of St. Stephen the first. May this communion, O Lord, purify us from guilt, and by the intercession of blessed Stephen, thy martyr and bishop, make us partakers of a heavenly remedy through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 16:46Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God. Saint Alphonsus Liguori, pray for us.
- 17:08Saint Stephen the protomartyr, pray for us.
