- 0:09Speaker 1: how you doing? I go, how am I doing? I go, dude,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm like on pins and needles here, and he goes, well,
- 0:16Speaker 1: the weight is over.

- 0:22Speaker 3: Just like that, Just like that.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It gives me chills because you know, it's something that
- 0:30Speaker 1: the fifteen year old me would have never thought. Yeah,
- 0:34Speaker 1: because I wasn't supposed to be there, and for that
- 0:38Speaker 1: to happen in the manner it did, only God made
- 0:41Speaker 1: it happen that way.
- 0:48Speaker 3: What's up, everybody, I'm Peanuts Human and this is the

- 1:10Speaker 4: Keep it going, all right.
- 1:11Speaker 3: This next littleman we got coming to the pods, a
- 1:13Speaker 3: sixteen year NFL that he's in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:16Speaker 3: He is a youth empowerment advocate. He is currently the
- 1:18Speaker 3: Commissioner of the Entertainment Football Association. Ladies and gentlemen, please
- 1:23Speaker 3: walk up to the pop, mister Andre Reid to the pop.
- 1:28Speaker 2: As they say, what out?
- 1:29Speaker 4: What out? What out?
- 1:30Speaker 3: What what out?
- 1:30Speaker 4: What up?
- 1:31Speaker 3: So you know what you're gonna ask, So I'm gonna
- 1:32Speaker 3: let you just get on right into it.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Andre.
- 1:35Speaker 5: What is the commissioner of the Entertainment Football Association.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Well, first of all, let me let me rephrase all
- 1:41Speaker 1: that right now.
- 1:42Speaker 4: We did I say it wrong?
- 1:43Speaker 2: No, you didn't. You didn't say it wrong. But what
- 1:44Speaker 2: we're gonna what we're doing?
- 1:46Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:46Speaker 1: Actually Tim Brown is a commissioner of another league.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Yeah, the same thing.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So I'm in the.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Other division and we were supposed to start in June,
- 1:57Speaker 1: but had a little mishaps or whatever you want to
- 1:59Speaker 1: say with people.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So we're going to start next June.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Okay, so we have another you know, five how many months,
- 2:06Speaker 1: another year, half a year, seven, eight months to get
- 2:09Speaker 1: it right.
- 2:09Speaker 2: But very excited about it.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know, football is is life, Yes, it's life for
- 2:16Speaker 1: us and to be a part of something an organization
- 2:20Speaker 1: that is going to empower other kids not only to
- 2:23Speaker 1: play the game, but to have another chance. That's really
- 2:25Speaker 1: what it's about. And for me to be a part
- 2:27Speaker 1: of it and be that the commissioners is awesome.
- 2:30Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I want to go back to nineteen eighty five your
- 2:33Speaker 3: draft class. Do you or can you name the person
- 2:38Speaker 3: drafted before you?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good one. Let's see.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I was the eighty six pick, correct, So eighty five
- 2:47Speaker 1: might have been. Was it a receiver from Missouri?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Close? Close, close? They both used to be. I give
- 2:55Speaker 3: you the initials g R. Wow, I give you the
- 2:59Speaker 3: initials of the of the player of the person.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And what what team did he get drafted by?
- 3:04Speaker 4: Oh?
- 3:04Speaker 3: Now you want to just tell you?
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly h g R.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Greg Robinson George rhymes buster rhymes, yes, yeah rhymes. And
- 3:14Speaker 1: you know what funny story about him? When we got
- 3:17Speaker 1: to the combine that year and the combine wasn't like
- 3:19Speaker 1: it is now, obviously, But I said to him, because
- 3:22Speaker 1: I come from a little Teene school called Kutztown col
- 3:25Speaker 1: tip and School, you know, nobody heard about it. He
- 3:28Speaker 1: went to Oklahoma, where I wanted to go. But obviously
- 3:31Speaker 1: that didn't happen, and I didn't need to go to Oklahoma.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And I said, where'd you get the the bust of rhymes,
- 3:37Speaker 1: the Buster? I said, you get it from the rapper,
- 3:39Speaker 1: you know, Bust the Rhymes. He said, yeah, somebody started
- 3:41Speaker 1: calling me that Bust the Rhymes, so he adopted that name,
- 3:46Speaker 1: George Buster Rhymes.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I didn't know that.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I didn't either.
- 3:48Speaker 5: I mean, it's a great story. I mean it's a
- 3:50Speaker 5: cool names. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I didn't.
- 3:52Speaker 1: He played with Minnesota for a couple of years. He
- 3:54Speaker 1: was a great punt returner. I don't know what happened.
- 3:58Speaker 1: I guess he probably and he was a decent receiver.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But he was actually a running back at OU when
- 4:05Speaker 1: they did the triple option with Thomas Slott and all
- 4:08Speaker 1: those guys back in the day. But yeah, George Rhymes
- 4:11Speaker 1: man busta Yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 5: All right, Andre, What was your welcome to the NFL moment?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Oh first training camp nineteen eighty five at for Donia
- 4:21Speaker 1: State And I was just in for Donia playing in
- 4:23Speaker 1: a charity golf.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Where is state?
- 4:26Speaker 3: For those it's not in Europe because it's sounded like
- 4:29Speaker 3: it's from Europe.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it's probably about forty five minutes from Buffalo. So
- 4:33Speaker 1: if you go down ninety all the way down towards
- 4:36Speaker 1: the lake, towards Cleveland, it's right around, you know, before Cleveland.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Obviously it's in New York. But yeah, crazy for Donia.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And I just was there and I told the people
- 4:49Speaker 1: I was a rookie here forty years ago, so I
- 4:53Speaker 1: was aging myself, you know what they knew. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I was a twenty one year old rookie at for
- 4:59Speaker 1: Donia State in nineteen eighty five.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And what made what what was that moment like for
- 5:03Speaker 3: you though? That that first running camp.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You know, training camps ain't like they used to be there.
- 5:09Speaker 1: We were in pads a lot of the times and
- 5:11Speaker 1: we hit Yeah, yeah, training camps out they don't do that.
- 5:14Speaker 3: What was a how long was it practice?
- 5:17Speaker 1: Probably about three and a half hours and you had
- 5:19Speaker 1: two of them, two of them?
- 5:21Speaker 3: And what times you start?
- 5:22Speaker 4: One time? When you would you be finished?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Started?
- 5:25Speaker 1: You know, you gotta be on the field eight thirty,
- 5:27Speaker 1: eight o'clock eight thirty warming up, practice starts at nine,
- 5:30Speaker 1: don't get off to about eleven eleven thirty, Go eat lunch,
- 5:34Speaker 1: get an app Even though I was twenty one, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you don't need an app but do you need a nap?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Because I was running the next The next practice was
- 5:41Speaker 1: like seven on seven and you know all that.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Kind of stuff.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yeah, so it was uh, you know, coming from a
- 5:49Speaker 1: small school, it wasn't like I was wasn't ready for it,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but I just was.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I just ran all day.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:55Speaker 4: So what was that part where you like, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 4: was it a play.
- 5:59Speaker 5: Was it a moment that I either like, man, I
- 6:01Speaker 5: need to pick my game up.
- 6:03Speaker 1: No, it was a cup. Well, like you said, welcome
- 6:05Speaker 1: to the NFL. I was running deep dig. Okay, not
- 6:08Speaker 1: from the slot, because that's what I was known for,
- 6:10Speaker 1: the slot. I was on the outside running deep dig
- 6:13Speaker 1: and Frank Wright threw me the ball. He was, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 1: the backup to Jim. Jim wasn't even there yet. Jim
- 6:18Speaker 1: came the next year.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Ball was a.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Little high, jumped up, got it feet from underneath me, landed, flipped,
- 6:25Speaker 1: got up.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Welcome to the NFL. Nobody helped me up.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Nobody help up. My last question about this and we'll
- 6:36Speaker 3: go on to the next one. Did you play special teams?
- 6:39Speaker 4: I did?
- 6:39Speaker 1: I played, uh did a little punk return And I
- 6:44Speaker 1: was like, I don't think this is just no, No.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It's not everybody. So you never like locked return teams.
- 6:49Speaker 1: No, I was, yeah, I used to look at that
- 6:52Speaker 1: ball coming down and look and see what's happening.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It was one blocking and I was like, that's it
- 6:58Speaker 2: for that. I don't want to do this. But you
- 7:00Speaker 2: know what, A.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Like you said, a welcome to the NFL moment My
- 7:06Speaker 1: first training camp was because you know, we're grown man
- 7:09Speaker 1: out there playing now. It wasn't just college kids. It
- 7:12Speaker 1: was a grown man.
- 7:13Speaker 3: So when I got I was always number five high
- 7:16Speaker 3: school college. When I got to the league, I became
- 7:19Speaker 3: thirty three. And my trainer or equipment manager teammate shout
- 7:23Speaker 3: out to teammate.
- 7:24Speaker 4: He called me.
- 7:25Speaker 3: He's like, look we got thirty three, thirty six or
- 7:29Speaker 3: thirty eight, forty one, forty two.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Like he gave me a.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Couple of different options, and I just was like. I
- 7:36Speaker 3: was at Piccadilly with a friend and I was like,
- 7:39Speaker 3: I don't know, what do you think I should do?
- 7:40Speaker 3: Miss Bartel. She goes, well, baby, thirty three looks good,
- 7:44Speaker 3: and we all just kind of were just I was
- 7:46Speaker 3: just like, I don't know, thirty thirty three. I just
- 7:49Speaker 3: was like he called me on the spot, and now
- 7:51Speaker 3: was how I picked thirty three. I have nothing to
- 7:53Speaker 3: compare to or connect with. You were eighty eight in college.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yes, Lynn Swan who's in the Hall of Fame was
- 8:00Speaker 1: my guy Steelers. I was a big Steeler fan growing
- 8:03Speaker 1: up and I was always beg my dad to watch
- 8:06Speaker 1: a half of football when the Steelers were on and
- 8:10Speaker 1: Swanna star wars with my guys the Lake Franco Harris,
- 8:13Speaker 1: Me and Joe all the mel Blunt, all those guys.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And I remember getting a training camp and they were like, well,
- 8:19Speaker 1: there's a guy here that has eighty eight. We traded
- 8:22Speaker 1: for Pete Metzelars from Seattle, remember tight end, and he
- 8:27Speaker 1: wasn't giving up that number.
- 8:28Speaker 2: So they said you got a choice.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You want eighty three or eighty nine, And I was like,
- 8:35Speaker 1: well eighty nine kind of eighty three I'll take. But
- 8:40Speaker 1: during the preseason my number was forty six.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Ooh ooh at receiver, Oh yeah that things, oh yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 6: superstank and brouh.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I was forty six and then made the team. All
- 8:53Speaker 1: that got good stuff, and they gave me eighty three.
- 8:55Speaker 3: So you had to make the team to get a number,
- 8:56Speaker 3: to get a number, So how many guys did y'all
- 8:58Speaker 3: going to camp.
- 8:59Speaker 1: With twenty five and trim down to fifty three? Yep,
- 9:03Speaker 1: one twenty five was on the field. Damn so one
- 9:06Speaker 1: on ones, bro, you better get up there.
- 9:10Speaker 5: I got a question though, So when you go outside
- 9:12Speaker 5: and you're playing wide receiver and you line up at
- 9:14Speaker 5: number with number forty six, you got left that, bro,
- 9:17Speaker 5: I was gonna say, like, you're not getting any respect.
- 9:19Speaker 2: This is what he said. I'm a fourth round pick.
- 9:21Speaker 2: So I'm like, that's.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Still pretty early, though, aren't you, because y'all y'all had
- 9:25Speaker 3: like twelve rounds. Yeah, so the fourth round is still
- 9:28Speaker 3: pretty damn good.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Fourth round was like a first round.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Yeah, Like that's still that's still amazing.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeah. From a D two school, there was a lot
- 9:35Speaker 2: of D.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Two games in the league time amazing. Yeah.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so I was like, it just give me a chance.
- 9:40Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I tell to a lot of people that how did
- 9:43Speaker 1: you make the team? I said, well, when I got
- 9:45Speaker 1: brought up in there front, you know, you had two
- 9:47Speaker 1: lines and dbs against receivers in one on one you
- 9:50Speaker 1: had ten minutes at the most.
- 9:52Speaker 4: That's true.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And the Vets would be like they do their one
- 9:55Speaker 1: or two of them, and they would be like, get
- 9:56Speaker 1: up in there. And it's ironic because eight years later
- 10:01Speaker 1: I was telling them rookies, get up in there.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:04Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay. So you you went to Cutstown University. Yes,
- 10:08Speaker 5: and it's in Pennsylvania, cuts Down, Pennsylvania.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Yes, and sounds German. I had to look it up.
- 10:14Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Yeah, actually look at it actually like amish Okay, this
- 10:19Speaker 1: country central so central Pa.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Pretty much.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I mean about an hour and a half outside of Philly.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Okay, okay, cool.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and coming from that university D two, not a
- 10:31Speaker 5: lot of people probably had heard of it.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Nobody.
- 10:33Speaker 5: What was your football future at the beginning when you
- 10:38Speaker 5: first get into the league, when you're coming from Cutsdown?
- 10:41Speaker 5: Did you even have an idea of what it could
- 10:43Speaker 5: be or what?
- 10:44Speaker 1: I definitely did, And I was all about getting a chance,
- 10:48Speaker 1: just like most kids are to get a chance. They
- 10:52Speaker 1: drafted me in the fourth round for a reason. I
- 10:55Speaker 1: could have went eighth round or ninth round or twelfth round.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And I thought at one point I was going to
- 11:02Speaker 1: go to Dallas or Denver, and Buffalo came out of nowhere.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I don't even know where Buffalo was. Bro I didn't
- 11:10Speaker 2: know where buff It was like New York.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I go, is it by New York City or they're
- 11:14Speaker 1: gonna know it's by this lake called Lake Erie and
- 11:16Speaker 1: it snows a lot.
- 11:20Speaker 4: Goodness.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I got there. I got just scrapedot got there.
- 11:23Speaker 1: My for Mini camp first year, it was two inches
- 11:28Speaker 1: snow on the ground. Mini Camp first week in June. What, Yes,
- 11:34Speaker 1: that sounds miserable and I go like this, I go, well,
- 11:37Speaker 1: welcome into some craziness. And I spent sixteen years up there.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I just couldn't imagine getting drafted by a team in
- 11:45Speaker 3: day one. You're just like, i'ma hate it here, Like
- 11:47Speaker 3: I never said if. I like, really, I'm in Green
- 11:51Speaker 3: Bay right now.
- 11:51Speaker 1: But being from Pennsylvania, I saw all that stuff, you know,
- 11:54Speaker 1: but I didn't see the lake effect. I didn't know
- 11:56Speaker 1: what lake effect snow was until I got up there
- 11:59Speaker 1: and I saw it, and I.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Go, oh, same Chicago didn't really know it. I mean,
- 12:02Speaker 3: as a kid, you saw, but then you.
- 12:04Speaker 6: Get sign you could see it and smell it confect
- 12:07Speaker 6: yeah and Buffalo correct, Yes, So you like and kind
- 12:10Speaker 6: of describe what this lake effect is because I've only
- 12:12Speaker 6: seen it in pictures where the water rolls in and
- 12:15Speaker 6: like it splits up the bridges right.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Well, you got you know, Buffalo's on the corner of
- 12:18Speaker 1: Lake Erie. Then you got Lake Ontario, which is right
- 12:21Speaker 1: above it. So the wind that comes off of Lake Ontario,
- 12:25Speaker 1: it comes off of there a different way and just
- 12:27Speaker 1: goes across Lake Erie the right way. So Rochester, all
- 12:32Speaker 1: those places they get some snow, but they don't get blasted.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Western New York gets blasted.
- 12:38Speaker 3: I feel like I'm getting a geography.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Lesson right here.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And if you live in if you live in the southtowns,
- 12:42Speaker 1: you're gonna get You can sometimes get a foot and
- 12:45Speaker 1: a half and you can see the cloud right the snow,
- 12:48Speaker 1: you can see the cloud.
- 12:49Speaker 5: So that's what I saw was a picture of like
- 12:51Speaker 5: the clouds, the clouds, and then like to the right nothing,
- 12:55Speaker 5: then on the left zero.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Oh, it looks terrible, like it's a foot and a half,
- 12:59Speaker 1: and then fifteen minutes away it's like a half an inch.
- 13:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:05Speaker 5: So I want to know about your experience of getting
- 13:07Speaker 5: into the Hall of Fame. I've seen the videos, not
- 13:10Speaker 5: specifically yours, but nowadays they always record the guys. And
- 13:15Speaker 5: it took you nine times eight eight, and you got
- 13:19Speaker 5: in on the ninth or.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Actually it actually took me seven. I got in on
- 13:23Speaker 2: the eighth.
- 13:23Speaker 4: That's what it was.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Okay, yes, So what was that waiting like?
- 13:28Speaker 5: Oh, it was It was understandable, you know, because you
- 13:31Speaker 5: had other guys in your draft class get in, people
- 13:34Speaker 5: from your team, and.
- 13:36Speaker 4: You had to wait.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Well, it's a little bit different though, because you guys
- 13:38Speaker 3: were and I'm just kind of describing to our listeners.
- 13:42Speaker 3: You're in the hotel room, right, this is when you
- 13:45Speaker 3: used to they used to bring all the finalists and
- 13:47Speaker 3: you go in the hotel room and you're just waiting
- 13:49Speaker 3: for that wait for that call, and you're just waiting.
- 13:51Speaker 3: You're just waiting for that knock on the waiting for
- 13:54Speaker 3: a call. Call, they knock on the door. They don't
- 13:56Speaker 3: even do that.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Now they go to the dude's house.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Yeah, the player's house. Now a little bit better.
- 14:00Speaker 2: It's more natural. Yeah, it's more natural.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, So how many times? What was it like?
- 14:05Speaker 5: You sit in the hotel room the first year You're like, okay,
- 14:07Speaker 5: I'm going I was.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I was a semifinalist the first two and then the
- 14:12Speaker 1: last six I was in the finals. And unlike baseball,
- 14:15Speaker 1: would I give you the percentage of what you get
- 14:17Speaker 1: in football. They're not going to tell you, oh, you
- 14:19Speaker 1: got you need eighty percent. Well you had seventy four
- 14:21Speaker 1: this year, yeah, or hey you're close, you're seventy eight.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Because every year it came around, it's like, yeah, it
- 14:27Speaker 1: is your year, it is your year. I said, it's
- 14:29Speaker 1: not up to me, right, it never was up to me.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I did what I did on the field. I was
- 14:36Speaker 1: only as good as the people around me. You guys know,
- 14:38Speaker 1: somebody's gonna make you better. I had four or five
- 14:42Speaker 1: other Hall of famers.
- 14:43Speaker 2: That made me better.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be
- 14:47Speaker 1: sitting here talking about it like that. So and we're
- 14:51Speaker 1: all we all were held accountable for everything. So that
- 14:55Speaker 1: was really important to us, not only winning but as
- 14:58Speaker 1: a team. I mean, you don't really see that nowadays, accountability.
- 15:01Speaker 1: These these guys are on their own doing their own things.
- 15:04Speaker 5: So when you retired, you were third all time and
- 15:07Speaker 5: received receptions.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Fifth and yard seventh and touchdown fourth fourth.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so you.
- 15:14Speaker 5: Got the numbers to get in King of Yak and
- 15:18Speaker 5: it takes you this time to get in. Do you
- 15:21Speaker 5: think it's because of the lack of Super Bowl or
- 15:24Speaker 5: what do you think it is or do you even
- 15:26Speaker 5: you don't worry about I know you don't worry about anything.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Yeah, but at the time, what was probably ratling.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I think that probably had some kind of a man
- 15:33Speaker 1: like a ten to fifteen percent that had a lot
- 15:35Speaker 1: to do with it. But you know, once you get in,
- 15:41Speaker 1: they don't even talk about that ten or fifteen They
- 15:42Speaker 1: don't even talk about that no more. You know, just
- 15:45Speaker 1: like Dion said, they say, hey, we're all in the
- 15:47Speaker 1: same room, all our busts are in the same room,
- 15:51Speaker 1: no matter what year you get in.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Yeah. Great, and you know what a.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Just what a ride it was for me to you know,
- 16:01Speaker 1: being Buffalo and that happened there for those fans because
- 16:05Speaker 1: you guys know, Bills fans are those mafia's.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Crazy crazy, Yeah, in a good way.
- 16:10Speaker 2: In a good way.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Yes, Yes, who all was there when you got that
- 16:13Speaker 3: that that knock on the door? Who all do you
- 16:15Speaker 3: have with?
- 16:15Speaker 1: I had I had my my two agents and you
- 16:20Speaker 1: had two at the time.
- 16:22Speaker 2: But they were a team.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Okay, okay, I was they were like a team.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Okay, an I got you got an agent two times.
- 16:30Speaker 1: And it's funny how it happened because they sequester you
- 16:36Speaker 1: in the hotel. So it was New York City. Remember
- 16:39Speaker 1: Super Bowls in New York that year in twenty fourteen,
- 16:43Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, maybe and maybe, you know,
- 16:45Speaker 1: maybe it's nothing meant to be, maybe it wasn't whatever.
- 16:47Speaker 1: So I remember being in the room and it was
- 16:50Speaker 1: the first year of the NFL Honors.
- 16:54Speaker 2: It was going to be on TV.
- 16:55Speaker 1: And I'm sitting in the room and my agents like,
- 16:57Speaker 1: this is your year. I said, yeah, this is seven
- 17:00Speaker 1: years now. I mean here, remember whatever. But I got
- 17:04Speaker 1: a phone call from a You're looking for a three
- 17:07Speaker 1: three oh number, which is here. Okay, So I'm looking
- 17:10Speaker 1: for a three to three oh call and I get
- 17:13Speaker 1: a two to one two call, and I'm like, who's
- 17:15Speaker 1: calling me from New York right now? When I'm waiting
- 17:18Speaker 1: for this three oh three to three year old call.
- 17:21Speaker 1: It was remember Brian Burwell. Yeah, he was in the
- 17:24Speaker 1: room while they were voting. So he goes, hey, Andre,
- 17:27Speaker 1: just want you to know you're in the final ten.
- 17:29Speaker 1: The go, yeah, I've been in the final ten like
- 17:31Speaker 1: six seven years now, because I'll call you back in
- 17:34Speaker 1: twenty minutes. He calls me back in twenty minutes, You're
- 17:37Speaker 1: in the final five. So now I'm in, but I'm
- 17:41Speaker 1: not officially in, so I have to get a yes
- 17:43Speaker 1: from all the voters to say yes, yes, yes. He
- 17:49Speaker 1: calls me back like twenty minutes later, and actually wasn't him.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It was somebody from here. It was a three to
- 17:55Speaker 1: three oh number. So I'm saying, now, who's calling me
- 17:58Speaker 1: from campon?
- 17:58Speaker 4: Now?
- 17:58Speaker 1: I wasn't just because I was just in a different
- 18:00Speaker 1: zone and it was somebody here from Canton said hey, Andre,
- 18:05Speaker 1: how you doing?
- 18:06Speaker 2: I go, how am I doing?
- 18:08Speaker 1: I go, dude, I'm like on pins and needles here,
- 18:11Speaker 1: and he goes, well, the weight is over, Welcome to
- 18:16Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame.
- 18:17Speaker 2: That was it?
- 18:18Speaker 3: Just like that, Just like that? What was the first
- 18:20Speaker 3: thing you thought? First emotion?
- 18:22Speaker 1: When he said that, I saw myself as a little
- 18:25Speaker 1: kid playing Pop Warner to the last time I played
- 18:28Speaker 1: a game in the NFL that fast. It gives me
- 18:33Speaker 1: chills because you know, it's something that the fifteen year
- 18:40Speaker 1: old me would have never thought. Yeah, because I wasn't
- 18:43Speaker 1: supposed to be there, and for that to happen in
- 18:47Speaker 1: the manner it did, only God made it happen that way.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, I don't know anybody that I've talked to
- 18:55Speaker 3: or even on this podcast that has said, oh yeah,
- 18:59Speaker 3: my goal was being in to be in a Hall
- 19:01Speaker 3: of Fame.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I never told my mom I wanted to play in
- 19:02Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Everyone just was like, well you were like that. We
- 19:05Speaker 3: had that conversation, just like I'm just playing. I didn't
- 19:07Speaker 3: think I.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Could go to the lead.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I love the year, Yeah, I love That's what I
- 19:11Speaker 1: love to do.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 1: So it's like your whole football life flashes before you
- 19:16Speaker 1: and like half a second and you think about the
- 19:21Speaker 1: first person that said something to you, and the first
- 19:24Speaker 1: person that hit you over the top of the head
- 19:25Speaker 1: said you're doing this wrong or this You think about
- 19:27Speaker 1: all that that quick.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yep, why you said something? And I want to know why?
- 19:34Speaker 5: And that was I wasn't supposed to be here? Why
- 19:38Speaker 5: were you not supposed to be here?
- 19:39Speaker 1: Because if you like, I'm going to write a book
- 19:42Speaker 1: and it's going to be about just how I grew
- 19:44Speaker 1: up and what I went through because nobody knows. They
- 19:48Speaker 1: see you on TV and they they don't know about
- 19:50Speaker 1: what you went through. And everybody has their own story,
- 19:54Speaker 1: me included. So you know, I was destined not to
- 19:57Speaker 1: even to go definitely make a right, said to make
- 20:00Speaker 1: a left, yeah, because of home life and all this
- 20:03Speaker 1: other stuff.
- 20:04Speaker 2: And well I'm supposed to be there.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Yeah, ye beat the odds.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Definitely be the odds. So something that you and I
- 20:12Speaker 3: have in common that I don't think you knew you
- 20:14Speaker 3: would be in this conversation, but you actually won a
- 20:17Speaker 3: Super Bowl. You can ask, I'm I'm I'm old for two.
- 20:21Speaker 1: I'm oh for four, So but I'm here, what was it?
- 20:26Speaker 3: And I know what it's like to be old for
- 20:27Speaker 3: over two? What was oh for four?
- 20:29Speaker 1: Like the first probably when I retired to first like
- 20:33Speaker 1: five years. You know, it was like people are just,
- 20:36Speaker 1: you know, ruthless.
- 20:37Speaker 2: You guys went there four times.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You know, people just what people are. But as the
- 20:44Speaker 1: years went on, the ruthlessness became admiring. There was an
- 20:51Speaker 1: admiration for all of us. There are those teams. Don
- 20:55Speaker 1: Beebe won a Super Bowl.
- 20:56Speaker 2: With the Packers.
- 20:57Speaker 1: He was with us for three of those losses. And
- 21:00Speaker 1: he said in an interview, if I can give a
- 21:03Speaker 1: ring and a Super Bowl champion and all the bills, guys,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I would, And that kind of chokes me up too,
- 21:10Speaker 1: because it's like that's what you play the game for
- 21:13Speaker 1: if you play the game, If you don't play the
- 21:14Speaker 1: game for that reason, you shouldn't even be playing a game.
- 21:17Speaker 1: And in this world right now, the kids are all
- 21:20Speaker 1: about the dough and this and that. There's nothing wrong
- 21:23Speaker 1: with that. But your legacy, that's what you want, that's
- 21:27Speaker 1: what you want to uphold, and you want to put
- 21:29Speaker 1: a stamp on.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Why do you tell people that the first Super Bowl
- 21:34Speaker 5: hurts the most?
- 21:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it came down to that.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Kick, Scott nor would he can fire the shot heard
- 21:42Speaker 6: round the world.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Now, what a fine game, What an absolutely fine game.
- 21:47Speaker 5: There we go with eight seconds to play Hi drama
- 21:51Speaker 5: hair on the Super Bowls.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And I think as the years go on, I say,
- 22:13Speaker 1: if we won that first one, he makes that kick,
- 22:15Speaker 1: did we go to the next three?
- 22:17Speaker 3: Yeah, everything's different. And I looked at you know that.
- 22:20Speaker 5: I looked at you guys, that Buffalo team coming from
- 22:23Speaker 5: Buffalo were you guys were stacked and you had fun.
- 22:28Speaker 5: You guys were like swaggy before swag was a word.
- 22:31Speaker 5: You guys had the shades on. Everybody had the high top.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Doing your thing.
- 22:38Speaker 5: And I don't think I appreciated it because I was
- 22:40Speaker 5: a younger man younger kid at the time still had
- 22:42Speaker 5: gray hair, though I probably did. But it was just
- 22:46Speaker 5: like I didn't realize how swaggy Buffalo was and how
- 22:50Speaker 5: much you guys did your thing.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I mean, we used to have Holly people come from
- 22:53Speaker 1: Hollywood in LA to come watch the games in rich Stadium.
- 22:57Speaker 1: There'd be Hollywood stars in the stands. Yeah, and we
- 23:01Speaker 1: didn't know until you know, the next day that they
- 23:03Speaker 1: were there. But I think we we carried ourselves in
- 23:07Speaker 1: a way where we kind of exuberated that, like they
- 23:11Speaker 1: came to see us because they we were good.
- 23:14Speaker 3: What were some of those stars? Who were some of
- 23:16Speaker 3: those stars?
- 23:17Speaker 4: Oh?
- 23:17Speaker 1: Man, the stars back then, like oh gosh, in the nineties,
- 23:23Speaker 1: you name, I can't even think about it.
- 23:25Speaker 2: You name them, they were there.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Okay, I got one for you. So there's there's one
- 23:30Speaker 3: play in mind whatever super Bowl, my first one we
- 23:32Speaker 3: lost where uh Riggie Wayne running down the sideline Scott Free.
- 23:37Speaker 3: That's the one play that I still think about that
- 23:38Speaker 3: kind of got away.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Was it your fault?
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah it was not.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Well, well, it's still the one player I think about that,
- 23:45Speaker 3: like it wasn't my fault though, like that, don't do
- 23:49Speaker 3: me like that. It's the one play I think about
- 23:51Speaker 3: that that Peyton Manning. They got on the hot, they
- 23:54Speaker 3: got on the roll real quick, and we gave them
- 23:56Speaker 3: a free play. Is there one play out of any
- 23:59Speaker 3: of those four Super Bowls that just kind of sticks
- 24:01Speaker 3: out in your mind? It's like, damn, I want that
- 24:03Speaker 3: one play back.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I think the first one against the Giants where we
- 24:08Speaker 1: had played them during the year and is when it
- 24:11Speaker 1: had LT and all them dudes. You know, it was
- 24:13Speaker 1: just they were the phenomenal on defense. Their offense wasn't
- 24:16Speaker 1: like they won on defense most of the time, and
- 24:22Speaker 1: it's just I was like, we're gonna we're playing them again,
- 24:25Speaker 1: and you know, how do we beat these guys? And
- 24:28Speaker 1: we got to be sound, especially in a game like this,
- 24:31Speaker 1: and we weren't sound even though it came down to
- 24:35Speaker 1: a kick. You know, I dropped two passes. There was
- 24:38Speaker 1: there was some things that could have went the other
- 24:41Speaker 1: way where we could have won that game, down title,
- 24:44Speaker 1: it missed the tackle.
- 24:45Speaker 2: There's all kinds of things going.
- 24:47Speaker 1: But I try to tell people the resolve of our
- 24:50Speaker 1: team is that we went back next year, and it
- 24:53Speaker 1: went back the year after that and the year after that.
- 24:57Speaker 1: We don't get credit for that because they don't talk
- 24:59Speaker 1: about it. But if we win two of those four,
- 25:02Speaker 1: we're one of the greatest teams ever. Yeah, we win
- 25:05Speaker 1: all four, we're like the forty nine Ers, the Steelers
- 25:08Speaker 1: of the seventies and forty nine Ers of the eighties,
- 25:11Speaker 1: the Patriots of the nineties, or whatever.
- 25:13Speaker 2: You want to call it.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 25:14Speaker 1: The two yeah, two thousands were in that conversation, but
- 25:19Speaker 1: it just wasn't meant to be. But they still talk
- 25:21Speaker 1: about us like that because it's a benchmark.
- 25:26Speaker 3: I want to talk about the comeback that might be
- 25:29Speaker 3: probably one of the if not the greatest crazy in history.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely in the playoffs.
- 25:37Speaker 3: I don't know, it might just be an the hole
- 25:38Speaker 3: in the top two.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I mean, even though they one a couple of years
- 25:42Speaker 1: ago with the Vikings, you know, but.
- 25:45Speaker 2: It didn't have that. It just didn't have that luster.
- 25:47Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 25:48Speaker 3: I'm kind of with you though, I'm with you.
- 25:50Speaker 1: And this is when we played the game there it
- 25:53Speaker 1: was blacked out on TV.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, they I forgot about yeah, because you were
- 25:58Speaker 3: so bad they switched it right, stood up. They're just like, yeah, they.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Put on they put on like the monsters, but you
- 26:04Speaker 1: didn't know that when you were playing though, right.
- 26:05Speaker 4: No, No, that's just a good story though.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Yeah, but I remember one thing about that game that
- 26:10Speaker 1: turned it around for us. Darryl Tally, who is our
- 26:13Speaker 1: vocal leader.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Guy.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Yeah, he's on the sideline and he's going up and
- 26:17Speaker 1: down the sideline in people, everybody's face. So we got
- 26:20Speaker 1: them when we got them right where we want them.
- 26:23Speaker 1: And we're like, we're down thirty five to three, and
- 26:28Speaker 1: we come out the third quarter and Frank throws a
- 26:31Speaker 1: ball and goes off McKellar's hands and Bubba mcdial picks it,
- 26:35Speaker 1: goes six.
- 26:36Speaker 2: It's thirty five to.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Three with twelve minutes twelve minutes left in the third quarter,
- 26:40Speaker 1: and he's going, we got him right where we need him.
- 26:44Speaker 1: And it's not that we didn't believe it, but we
- 26:46Speaker 1: had that crowd and dude, once that clicked and turned around, yeah,
- 26:52Speaker 1: they were done.
- 26:54Speaker 3: But did you come out No one wants No one
- 26:57Speaker 3: starts a game like, all right, let's let's let's get down,
- 27:00Speaker 3: let's spot them fourteen points. We had played come out
- 27:03Speaker 3: like super flat or just what we played.
- 27:05Speaker 1: In the week before down in Houston in an astrodome.
- 27:08Speaker 1: We got beat twenty eight to three, had to come
- 27:12Speaker 1: back and play them the next week in a wildcard game.
- 27:14Speaker 1: So did we were familiar, of course, but we're like
- 27:17Speaker 1: we got them at home, our fans and we were
- 27:20Speaker 1: laying like the biggest egg you can imagine, Yes, And
- 27:24Speaker 1: it took just one play, one little spark, and we
- 27:29Speaker 1: looked in their eyes and they weren't. They were done.
- 27:34Speaker 1: You know how you look at somebody's eyes and done.
- 27:36Speaker 1: They they already were going to Pittsburgh the next week.
- 27:40Speaker 5: I want to know one more thing about that, that
- 27:42Speaker 5: comeback game. So as Darryl Talley said what he said
- 27:45Speaker 5: on the sidelines, Yeah, like is that like becomes the
- 27:48Speaker 5: mantra as we like of.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Course, like, hey we got them right what we want.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Yeah, they were because of the situation.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Yes, it's these You don't I don't.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Think you even would probably even hear that right now.
- 28:00Speaker 1: No, because we were looking at him going up like
- 28:02Speaker 1: what is this boob talking about?
- 28:04Speaker 3: There's always that one guy who does that though, yeah
- 28:06Speaker 3: he doesn't play or I'm not center, I didn't play,
- 28:08Speaker 3: but I'm.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Yeah, And then it just started going. We had an
- 28:11Speaker 1: orange side kick. We covered that he threw moon through
- 28:14Speaker 1: two picks, like he was like four touchdowns in the
- 28:18Speaker 1: first half he threw he could have been He probably
- 28:20Speaker 1: should have threw four more.
- 28:22Speaker 3: You had three to exact game.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I had three tugs that game.
- 28:25Speaker 4: You had a nice little game.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Yeah, they were trying to double brou use a zone zone.
- 28:31Speaker 1: If I had to say, that was a zone game
- 28:33Speaker 1: in all the games in two hundred and fifty four
- 28:35Speaker 1: games I played, I was in the zone like no
- 28:39Speaker 1: other that game.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Why do you think that was? And just for that
- 28:43Speaker 3: specific game, just because the comeback the situation.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I think the thing that Darryl said, and it's like,
- 28:48Speaker 1: you know, I laugh about it, like really, but we
- 28:51Speaker 1: all like heard it, and yeah, after maybe one or
- 28:55Speaker 1: two plays, we started believing that, Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Well minimum is real.
- 29:00Speaker 5: You know, we call this the Second Acts NFL Player
- 29:02Speaker 5: Second X podcast for a reason. And you know, we
- 29:05Speaker 5: all get to we all got to hang up our
- 29:07Speaker 5: cleats at some point. Yes, and you've been able to
- 29:10Speaker 5: do a lot after football. What are some of those
- 29:14Speaker 5: things that you're probably considered that you're most proud of.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Well, my kids, Number one, I have a twenty nine
- 29:21Speaker 1: and thirty one year old. When I retired, they were
- 29:23Speaker 1: six and four.
- 29:25Speaker 4: So they're babies.
- 29:26Speaker 2: They were babies.
- 29:26Speaker 4: They were like my kids.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, so and just you know what, you guys know,
- 29:31Speaker 1: relationships are so precious in this game. You got to
- 29:35Speaker 1: develop those relationships early because those will be the same
- 29:38Speaker 1: guys and same people you see later when you're retired. Right,
- 29:41Speaker 1: And I think the generation now they don't think of
- 29:45Speaker 1: it that way. And I'm involved in you know a
- 29:49Speaker 1: couple of things.
- 29:50Speaker 4: And well, you got the the Andre Reid Foundation.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Yes, you're on the Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Chiefs
- 29:58Speaker 5: in two twenty fifteen.
- 29:59Speaker 4: I'm sure that was kind of fun.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Andy Reid's first year I was with him.
- 30:03Speaker 5: Oh yeah, okay, I didn't realize that was any reads
- 30:05Speaker 5: first year with the two year because yeah, we left
- 30:07Speaker 5: Philly then went on over. It's crazy how fast that
- 30:09Speaker 5: stuff happens. Then you get a quarterback and win a
- 30:11Speaker 5: couple championships, seems like it's just been.
- 30:14Speaker 6: Forever and it's like, yeah, right, like where did that go?
- 30:18Speaker 3: And you did some mentalists work on TV.
- 30:20Speaker 5: So out of all these things outside of your family, right,
- 30:24Speaker 5: and your teammates, what was that? You know, what is
- 30:28Speaker 5: what was that second chapter? Like was it hard making
- 30:30Speaker 5: that transition and maybe kind of tell your struggles or
- 30:35Speaker 5: how you tried to flourish and these I think.
- 30:36Speaker 1: It's hard for all of us. It's harder for all
- 30:39Speaker 1: of us to hang up the cleats. I mean, I
- 30:41Speaker 1: played thirty one years of football straight from from six
- 30:45Speaker 1: years old till I was thirty seven. Every every fall
- 30:50Speaker 1: I was padded up. And then when it's all, when
- 30:54Speaker 1: it's said and done and over, it's like, Okay, what
- 30:56Speaker 1: do I do next?
- 30:57Speaker 4: Now?
- 30:59Speaker 1: And again, the relationships are really important. They've been important
- 31:03Speaker 1: to me for thirty years, some of these relationships. And
- 31:08Speaker 1: as a Hall of Famer now people are you're not
- 31:11Speaker 1: Andre Reid played for the Bills. You are, but you're
- 31:14Speaker 1: Andre Reid Pro Football Hall of Famer that played for
- 31:17Speaker 1: the Bills, and that not only holds a lot of value,
- 31:24Speaker 1: but you are in a position to do so many
- 31:26Speaker 1: different things outside of the game now and make impacts
- 31:30Speaker 1: outside of the game. And you're talking about my foundation
- 31:31Speaker 1: with Boys and Girls Club so important to me. You know,
- 31:35Speaker 1: Denzel Washington is the national ambassador. I'm an ambassador under Denzel.
- 31:42Speaker 1: So many guys, so many people you don't even know,
- 31:44Speaker 1: went through the club system that accredit them for who
- 31:47Speaker 1: they are and what they do today.
- 31:50Speaker 2: And that's really important to me.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Yeah, what made you want to focus on literacy?
- 31:56Speaker 1: I didn't get read at home. Mom and dad didn't
- 31:59Speaker 1: have time to read to me. So I was library
- 32:01Speaker 1: or Boys and Girls club. That's why I learned how
- 32:05Speaker 1: to read. And again that chokes me up because.
- 32:11Speaker 2: You know, it doesn't get any it doesn't get any better.
- 32:14Speaker 1: It does, but we still have a literacary problem, literacy
- 32:17Speaker 1: problem in this country.
- 32:19Speaker 4: We do.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And I always say it takes a village to get.
- 32:24Speaker 4: It right right, and as.
- 32:27Speaker 1: An athlete, we're in a position to make that village better.
- 32:32Speaker 1: And you know that's what I'm doing.
- 32:34Speaker 5: Yeah, Yeah, it's always impressive when we hear these stories
- 32:37Speaker 5: about people doing things for others. I learned this from
- 32:40Speaker 5: a pastor friend of mine that once you're affected by something,
- 32:45Speaker 5: you will become an advocate for it all the time.
- 32:47Speaker 5: And because the lack of reading that you received at
- 32:51Speaker 5: an early age, you're probably behind. And then you of course,
- 32:53Speaker 5: these other things happened kept me behind right right, and
- 32:56Speaker 5: then all of a sudden, you know, if you don't
- 32:57Speaker 5: get this outside help, you're not getting to college.
- 33:00Speaker 4: And you're not getting to where you are. And I
- 33:03Speaker 4: just love that I've done.
- 33:04Speaker 5: I've been involved in reading programs with my foundation for
- 33:08Speaker 5: a long time and I don't know if you know this,
- 33:10Speaker 5: Peanut shout out to everybody is a stat of working
- 33:13Speaker 5: with United Ways that all of our kids in America
- 33:15Speaker 5: we learned how to read. From kindergarten to third grade,
- 33:18Speaker 5: you're learning how to read, and then from fourth grade
- 33:21Speaker 5: on you learn from reading. And so if you're behind
- 33:25Speaker 5: in those K through third grades, you're going to be
- 33:28Speaker 5: stay behind from fourth grade to seventh grade, and your likeliness.
- 33:31Speaker 4: To drop out they really rise. Ye.
- 33:34Speaker 3: All these other things happen, and that that.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Is across the board.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Yes, and it's always been like that. I think it's
- 33:40Speaker 1: a lot better than it was probably when I was
- 33:42Speaker 1: a kid, because there's more out there, there's people doing
- 33:46Speaker 1: more things. But you kind of keep that in the
- 33:50Speaker 1: back of your mind that that's why you do it.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Because every time I go in and I've been to
- 33:57Speaker 1: She's over the past ten years, fifteen years, I've been
- 34:00Speaker 1: to a boys and girls club from Alaska all the
- 34:02Speaker 1: way down to Florida, telling him my story yea, and
- 34:08Speaker 1: saying that you could be that kid too. They just
- 34:10Speaker 1: need encouragement, right, And I think that's part of your resume.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, yeah, absolutely yeah. I don't think you knew
- 34:19Speaker 3: this though, but I got it. I was affected by
- 34:21Speaker 3: golf by not playing it at a young age, and
- 34:24Speaker 3: now you're just a kid for it. I try to
- 34:27Speaker 3: play all the time.
- 34:28Speaker 1: Yeah, all the time.
- 34:31Speaker 4: That that was good. That was good. That was exactly exactly.
- 34:35Speaker 3: I love that because.
- 34:36Speaker 4: I'm a you know, I'm an avid golfer. Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 3: My last one for you was Mount Rushmore. If you
- 34:44Speaker 3: pick four people that have helped you become the man
- 34:47Speaker 3: you are today, who would those four people be?
- 34:50Speaker 1: Obviously my pops And quick story when I got inducted here,
- 34:56Speaker 1: my pops had passed away in ninety six. Very emotional day.
- 35:05Speaker 1: I wish he was there, but he was there. But
- 35:09Speaker 1: he was my biggest fan, and I wasn't the person
- 35:14Speaker 1: I am because my dad was rough. He was five eight,
- 35:17Speaker 1: big hands, like if he put his hand on your shoulder,
- 35:20Speaker 1: you knew it because it was heavy. You know, would
- 35:23Speaker 1: get up at five o'clock in the morning to be
- 35:25Speaker 1: at pour and concrete by seven and just was that
- 35:29Speaker 1: kind of guy. We all have our faults. He had
- 35:32Speaker 1: his faults too, but he always told me, if you
- 35:35Speaker 1: don't work hard, you'll never know your potential. If you
- 35:41Speaker 1: don't work hard, you'll never know your potential. And if
- 35:43Speaker 1: you don't make an effort, you'll never know what effort means.
- 35:48Speaker 1: If you don't make it, you got to make an
- 35:50Speaker 1: effort first to know what it means.
- 35:52Speaker 2: And that stuck with me.
- 35:54Speaker 1: My whole life, because again, I wasn't supposed to be playing.
- 35:57Speaker 1: I wasn't supposed to be a Hall of famer. He
- 36:01Speaker 1: knew I was supposed to be a Hall of Famer.
- 36:03Speaker 1: And that's what I try to tell kids, is you're
- 36:06Speaker 1: only one person away from somebody telling you that there's
- 36:10Speaker 1: a possibility, it's possible. Regardless of where are you from,
- 36:14Speaker 1: how much money you got, where you live, all that
- 36:17Speaker 1: kind of stuff. You need one person to change your life,
- 36:22Speaker 1: and you got to be out there doing it, you know,
- 36:24Speaker 1: seeing these people or whatever it is. But it's one person.
- 36:28Speaker 1: You got to make the effort. So that's really what
- 36:30Speaker 1: I tell kids. I said, don't sit back and say
- 36:32Speaker 1: I should have, or I could have, or I would have.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Do it.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, all.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Right, you got Pops as one you got three more.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Probably my high school coach, Bruce Trotter, who recently passed
- 36:47Speaker 1: away about two years ago, two three years ago. He
- 36:50Speaker 1: always saw something in me. All those coaches there saw
- 36:53Speaker 1: something in me. And I was a little guy. You know,
- 36:55Speaker 1: I didn't start growing until I got a certain age,
- 36:58Speaker 1: and he always new. He came to my they came
- 37:01Speaker 1: to my Hall of Fame ceremony, and that was besides
- 37:03Speaker 1: my family, those guys because I I was that guy.
- 37:10Speaker 1: And it's not that they say, oh I knew this
- 37:13Speaker 1: was going to happen.
- 37:14Speaker 2: They just loved. They loved the journey.
- 37:17Speaker 1: They'd love to see the journey that I was on,
- 37:20Speaker 1: not only how I played, be how I carried myself too,
- 37:24Speaker 1: because that's a reflection on them.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Yes, got it?
- 37:26Speaker 3: Okay, yep, Pops Trotter, he get two more.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Obviously my mom, because she was she held the fort together.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Our moms are kind of our backbones. Without them, we
- 37:40Speaker 1: obviously we wouldn't be here. But my mom's eighty one
- 37:43Speaker 1: now and she's going through health problems in this, but
- 37:46Speaker 1: she never missed the game.
- 37:48Speaker 2: My pops never missed the game. Yeah, I remember he.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Slipped the disc in his back and didn't get surgery
- 37:56Speaker 1: and came to the game with a slip disk in
- 37:58Speaker 1: his back because he didn't.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Want to miss the game. Dedication.
- 38:03Speaker 1: All these words that I learned through my life. Throughout
- 38:05Speaker 1: my life, my dad taught me what those words mean.
- 38:09Speaker 1: So my mom, my, Pops, my high school coach, and
- 38:13Speaker 1: my college coach, George Baldwin at cuts down former military guy, marines,
- 38:19Speaker 1: hard nosed guy. At some point in your life you
- 38:23Speaker 1: need that kind of stuff, need somebody to just pound you.
- 38:28Speaker 1: So you know that it ain't easy. And there's probably more.
- 38:32Speaker 1: But those four, especially my mom and dad, they they
- 38:36Speaker 1: put in a lot of work.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Man, they.
- 38:41Speaker 1: They did a lot of stuff for me. They made
- 38:43Speaker 1: sure I had not what I needed.
- 38:46Speaker 4: Earlier.
- 38:46Speaker 3: It takes a village.
- 38:47Speaker 2: It takes a village.
- 38:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I wanted to know about your nutritional company, Yes, Celibate, Celibate, Okay, good,
- 38:54Speaker 5: I was.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I didn't know how to say it.
- 38:56Speaker 3: I was going to ask that question.
- 38:57Speaker 4: Thank you, Salivate.
- 39:00Speaker 1: They're out of Florida. And you guys know it's a fact,
- 39:05Speaker 1: the older you get and all the hits you take, uh,

- 39:32Speaker 1: called so with those words, it's got to do. Yeah,
- 39:36Speaker 1: I can't spell that.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Letting the take it.
- 39:38Speaker 1: But I partner with them last year out of Florida,
