Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 0:43Speaker 1: about this week's subject of the Disgraceland full episode, the band.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And we're doing so because it's Thanksgiving, and that means
- 0:51Speaker 1: it's the week we celebrate the Last Waltz, and we
- 0:54Speaker 1: are talking to you about the greatest concert films from
- 0:57Speaker 1: rock and roll history. Sean Combs was back in this week,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and of course we are diving into your voicemails, text
- 1:03Speaker 1: and more, and as always, a whole lot of rosie.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Al Right, discoes, let's get into it. My favorite thing
- 1:19Speaker 1: about The Last Waltz, the Scorsese directed concert film depicting
- 1:23Speaker 1: the final performance of the band, subject that we're all
- 1:27Speaker 1: now pretty familiar with just because of our rock and
- 1:30Speaker 1: roll pedigrees, but also it's the subject of this week's
- 1:32Speaker 1: full episode of Disgraceland, a concert that took place on
- 1:36Speaker 1: Thanksgiving nineteen seventy six. So apropos for this week. My
- 1:40Speaker 1: favorite part of The Last Waltz isn't a musical moment.
- 1:44Speaker 1: It's a cinematic moment. It's the opening seconds of the film.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It's Rick Danko negotiating with that pool table like he's
- 1:53Speaker 1: a freaking corporate litigator going in for the attack in
- 1:57Speaker 1: a full courtroom. Rick is in total control. He looks
- 2:01Speaker 1: as comfortable with that poolqueue in that pool hall as
- 2:04Speaker 1: he does on stage with his bass. To me, in
- 2:09Speaker 1: this moment, Rick Danko always looked like a real life
- 2:12Speaker 1: version of Robert de Niro's Johnny Boy character from Mean Streets,
- 2:16Speaker 1: just a little worse for wear, a little more knowing.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And then after this, after Rick at the pool table,
- 2:22Speaker 1: incomes this sort of burbling crowd noise from Bill Graham's
- 2:27Speaker 1: Winterland ballroom, and Robbie Robertson, dazed with a cigarette in
- 2:32Speaker 1: his mouth, walks back out onto stage to the applause.
- 2:35Speaker 1: That's the next thing we see. The next thing we
- 2:37Speaker 1: hear Robby's a little confused, confused about what. We're not
- 2:41Speaker 1: sure where is he? What does the crowd want? Why
- 2:45Speaker 1: are they still there? It doesn't matter. Like his bandmate
- 2:48Speaker 1: Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson is beyond cool in this moment.
- 2:51Speaker 1: And I know this moment well. Every rock and roller,
- 2:53Speaker 1: every professional musician who's toured, knows the moment here that
- 2:57Speaker 1: is being depicted on films. As a guy in a band,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you live for this moment, the moment when the crowd
- 3:03Speaker 1: goes in on the gag with you requesting an encore,
- 3:06Speaker 1: knowing that you're gonna come back out on stage, and
- 3:08Speaker 1: maybe there's a one percent chance that you won't, but
- 3:11Speaker 1: still the audience can't help but give you the adulation
- 3:14Speaker 1: that you deserve for scorching them for the past ninety
- 3:17Speaker 1: minutes or however long your set was. So Robbie's putting
- 3:21Speaker 1: it on a bit in this in this bit, really,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I mean, come on, what he's not gonna do an encore?
- 3:27Speaker 1: They're making a fucking movie about but the band and
- 3:31Speaker 1: their live performance and this whole thing is recognizable. But
- 3:36Speaker 1: as a viewer watching it, I don't care. I'm into
- 3:39Speaker 1: the minor show business indulgence here, and you know, Robbie
- 3:43Speaker 1: speaks into the microphone like he just woke up, you know, like.
- 3:45Speaker 2: He's surprised to be there. He's surprised to see anybody there.
- 3:48Speaker 2: He's like, oh, you guys are still here, That's what
- 3:51Speaker 2: he asked the audience. Of course they're still there. Who
- 3:54Speaker 2: the hell is they gonna go? They miss Thanksgiving dinner
- 3:57Speaker 2: at home to be with you, Robbie Robertson. Their families
- 3:59Speaker 2: are likely pissed off, wondering why their kids are away
- 4:02Speaker 2: from home on the greatest holiday of the year while
- 4:04Speaker 2: they're at a concert.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Who is a concert on Thanksgiving? Anyways? I always wondered
- 4:08Speaker 1: that in the back of my head, God, what did
- 4:10Speaker 1: what did? What did Garth Garth Hudson tell his tell
- 4:13Speaker 1: his parents It's a dumb ship you think about when
- 4:20Speaker 1: you're young and stoned. And then, of course, after Robbie
- 4:23Speaker 1: gets on stage in his sweatshirt over his collared shirt
- 4:27Speaker 1: with a cool kind of fedora looking hat, On in
- 4:31Speaker 1: his cigarette, after that, Levon and rick In, a roadie
- 4:35Speaker 1: who looks like he missed the Electric Mayhem tryout, is
- 4:38Speaker 1: behind him. They all, the three of these dudes come
- 4:41Speaker 1: out now. They're they're all business. Levan is all business.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Rick is just still all cool. Levan's cool too, but
- 4:49Speaker 1: Rick is just fucking cool. Rick wishes the crowd a
- 4:52Speaker 1: happy Thanksgiving, and I guess Garth and Richard Manuel were
- 4:57Speaker 1: already stationed at their keyboards because in the cut, in
- 5:00Speaker 1: the edit, and within seconds, Levon is on the beat
- 5:03Speaker 1: for Marvin Gay's Don't You Do It? And in that moment,
- 5:07Speaker 1: as the orange Scorsese esque movie font flashes the names
- 5:12Speaker 1: of the band, the musicians from the band across the screen,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you have no godly idea who Marvin Gay even is anymore. Okay,
- 5:21Speaker 1: the song is, I guess, kind of familiar, and like
- 5:24Speaker 1: the way that deja vu is familiar, right, you get
- 5:27Speaker 1: a taste of what the song, but you don't care
- 5:30Speaker 1: because this is now the version of the song. Okay,
- 5:33Speaker 1: this is so thick, this version of the song. I
- 5:37Speaker 1: hate this word funky, but it's just funk. Man. The
- 5:42Speaker 1: band incredible. They sound in this song. They sound and
- 5:47Speaker 1: feel and look as great as the movie looks. It's real,
- 5:52Speaker 1: it's exciting, it's soulful, and as a music fan, as
- 5:56Speaker 1: a rock and roll fan, I watch this just gratitude. Okay,
- 6:02Speaker 1: you're watching it, and you've never been more grateful to
- 6:05Speaker 1: watch anything before on television as you are right now
- 6:09Speaker 1: in the moment watching the Band's Last Waltz. Sorry, I
- 6:12Speaker 1: get a little lost in that, got pulled back into
- 6:15Speaker 1: where I was when I used to watch this thing
- 6:17Speaker 1: over and over again with my friends. This is my
- 6:21Speaker 1: recollection of the Last Waltz. It's how I feel about it, anyways,
- 6:24Speaker 1: And that's my favorite part of my favorite concert film.
- 6:28Speaker 1: It's the beginning. And I don't know if it's because
- 6:32Speaker 1: I don't want it to end, because this ends up
- 6:35Speaker 1: being the end of the band. The song raps, the
- 6:39Speaker 1: first song in the film, and the band exits stage left.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Just genius filmmaking by Martin Scorsese and the band from
- 6:48Speaker 1: that moment on in reality, if not on film, the
- 6:52Speaker 1: band is no more. That's the whole point of the
- 6:54Speaker 1: Last Waltz. It's the killing of the band. And I
- 6:57Speaker 1: never got over it. I never got it. Actually, that's
- 7:02Speaker 1: the better you know. I do now. I understand now
- 7:04Speaker 1: why it was the end, and I understand why people
- 7:07Speaker 1: are pissed at Robbie Robertson. But come on, man, in
- 7:09Speaker 1: defense of Robbie Robertson. You can't get out there every
- 7:12Speaker 1: night and do something that your heart's just not into,
- 7:15Speaker 1: especially if you're afraid you're gonna die if you keep
- 7:16Speaker 1: doing it. But you know, like I got, I alluded
- 7:21Speaker 1: to a second ago. My friends and I we watched
- 7:24Speaker 1: the shit out of this movie, me, Greg Conley, Scott Janovitz.
- 7:27Speaker 1: It was like we watched this movie once a week
- 7:30Speaker 1: at least. It was always on, even when we weren't
- 7:32Speaker 1: watching it. It was just on in the background while we
- 7:35Speaker 1: partied at Greg's house. Epic parties, by the way, But still,
- 7:39Speaker 1: I mean, you just get sucked in the performances. They're arresting,
- 7:43Speaker 1: they just stop you in your tracks. It's just, I
- 7:47Speaker 1: don't know a better word for it than arresting. It's
- 7:49Speaker 1: just like, oh my god, I can't believe what I'm watching.
- 7:51Speaker 1: But you know, the dramatic side of the film, the
- 7:53Speaker 1: dramatic piece of the film, which is the breakup of
- 7:56Speaker 1: the band, it was confounding to me. I never bought
- 7:59Speaker 1: the rat in the moment. Then I do now, like
- 8:02Speaker 1: I just said, But in the moment when I was
- 8:03Speaker 1: younger watching this, I never bought into why the band
- 8:06Speaker 1: was breaking up, it seemed, probably because it was the
- 8:09Speaker 1: breakup anyways, seemed to be solely a Robbie Robertson thing.
- 8:13Speaker 1: The need for the band to end. It kind of
- 8:16Speaker 1: also seemed that Robbie needed a plot for the movie
- 8:19Speaker 1: that he was making with Scorsese, and this was the
- 8:21Speaker 1: perfect dramatic conceit. And the other guys in the band,
- 8:24Speaker 1: Richard Manuel in particular, they appear to be along for
- 8:28Speaker 1: the ride, with the premise of the film like this is,
- 8:30Speaker 1: you know, the band's last performance. They're breaking up after
- 8:33Speaker 1: they filmed this set at Bill Graham's ballroom, Winterland Ballroom.
- 8:39Speaker 1: But you can tell their hearts aren't into it, Leavon,
- 8:41Speaker 1: especially now that I think about it, They just don't
- 8:43Speaker 1: seem into it. They don't seem into the rationale for
- 8:46Speaker 1: breaking up. They collectively seem to me to be like
- 8:48Speaker 1: a like a like a nineteen sixties or seventies or eighties,
- 8:52Speaker 1: like a like a mid twentieth century politician's wife on
- 8:55Speaker 1: the campaign trail, kind of shell shocked but along for
- 8:58Speaker 1: the ride, hijacked by their husband's ambition. The husband in
- 9:02Speaker 1: this scenario, the politician being Robbie Robertson, you know, I
- 9:06Speaker 1: never read Levon's book. I never read Robbie's book. I
- 9:09Speaker 1: suppose I will at some point. I didn't write this
- 9:12Speaker 1: episode of The Last Waltz, so I didn't have to
- 9:14Speaker 1: read those books. Death Lundy did and he did an
- 9:16Speaker 1: incredible job writing this as Matt Bowden as well, while
- 9:20Speaker 1: I want on topic, just phenomenal job mixing this episode.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Both those guys like me have deep affection for the band.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But I'm grateful that I didn't have to read these
- 9:31Speaker 1: books because I don't want to hate Robbie Robertson. I
- 9:34Speaker 1: don't want to feel bad for Levon Helm or Rick
- 9:37Speaker 1: Danko or Richard Manuel anymore than I already do or
- 9:39Speaker 1: Garth Garth Hudson. I want to remember the band the
- 9:44Speaker 1: way Martin Scorsese wanted them to be remembered, which is
- 9:48Speaker 1: all up there on the screen in the Last Waltz.
- 9:51Speaker 1: These guys are magical, they are musical giants. They are
- 9:55Speaker 1: masters of their craft. They're unfuck withable on stage, sadly,
- 10:01Speaker 1: especially when you look at Richard and Garth. Stage was
- 10:05Speaker 1: appeared to be the only comfort zone, and Scorsese knew
- 10:09Speaker 1: how to capture that and more. There are so many
- 10:11Speaker 1: great moments in this film, of course, moments ago beyond
- 10:15Speaker 1: the five musicians in the band, right, Okay, the Neil
- 10:18Speaker 1: Young Coke thing, which we got into in the episode
- 10:22Speaker 1: we did funny little detail. There's another one of my
- 10:26Speaker 1: favorite moments of all time, not just in this film
- 10:30Speaker 1: but just a music history, is Robbie Robertson smoking Eric
- 10:34Speaker 1: Clapton on stage. Clapton, who's the guitar god, and Robbie
- 10:39Speaker 1: just toasts them. It's one of the greatest burns in
- 10:41Speaker 1: rock and roll history. There's Muddy Waters cementing the concepts
- 10:45Speaker 1: of masculinity into my post adolescent consciousness. The guy I
- 10:48Speaker 1: spell m An just amazing. There's Van Morrison with his
- 10:51Speaker 1: Elaine Benis kicks, one of the most badass stage exits
- 10:55Speaker 1: we've ever seen, and to bring it fully into Disgraceland
- 10:58Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four, in the Last Waltz, there's a
- 11:01Speaker 1: story from Robbie, Rick and Richard about playing one of
- 11:04Speaker 1: their early gigs in Jack Ruby's club outside Dallas. And
- 11:08Speaker 1: we've been doing all this Kennedy assassination stuff because last
- 11:11Speaker 1: week was the anniversary of November twenty second. Jack Ruby,
- 11:14Speaker 1: of course makes it makes a lot of sense here.
- 11:15Speaker 1: There's so much that I love about this film, so much,
- 11:19Speaker 1: too much, too much to list. And for all these reasons,
- 11:22Speaker 1: the Last Waltz is my favorite concert film. It's hard
- 11:25Speaker 1: to even come up with a close second. Maybe gimme
- 11:30Speaker 1: Shelter for kind of the opposite reasons as this. I
- 11:34Speaker 1: guess I don't really know what I mean by that,
- 11:36Speaker 1: at least for the wrong reasons. I don't even know
- 11:40Speaker 1: what else. Madonna's Truth or dare I'm serious. I love that,
- 11:45Speaker 1: but I don't put it even close to The Last Waltz. Anyways,
- 11:49Speaker 1: I'm excited to hear what you guys think. That was
- 11:50Speaker 1: the question of the week. You know, what's the greatest
- 11:52Speaker 1: concert film? What's your favorite concert film? Is there though?
- 11:57Speaker 1: Another one? Is there a close second? Is there? Is
- 11:59Speaker 1: there another concert film that demands yearly viewing as The
- 12:02Speaker 1: Last Waltz does on Thanksgiving? Is there another concert film
- 12:05Speaker 1: that causes pilgrimages to Woodstock to try to root down
- 12:08Speaker 1: into the band's lord, to take that long and windy
- 12:11Speaker 1: dirt road into the woods in search of the big
- 12:13Speaker 1: Pink House. I don't think there is, and we're gonna
- 12:16Speaker 1: try to find though we're gonna try to cope with
- 12:18Speaker 1: some answers in this after party. We're gonna we're gonna
- 12:20Speaker 1: dig into your voicemails and your text on concert films
- 12:24Speaker 1: that maybe approach the awesomeness of the Last Waltz. We're
- 12:29Speaker 1: also gonna touch on this week's rewind episode Here Remind
- 12:32Speaker 1: episode on David Bowie, and we're gonna tee up next
- 12:36Speaker 1: week's John Lennon episode. No, not those John Lennon episodes.
- 12:39Speaker 1: This John Lennon episode John in the early early seventies,
- 12:42Speaker 1: John the radical, not domestic John who was shot down
- 12:45Speaker 1: by Chapman. We did a two partter on that we're
- 12:47Speaker 1: gonna get. We did another one fully on John's politics
- 12:50Speaker 1: in the early part of the nineteen seventies. Next week
- 12:53Speaker 1: is the in versuy of John's death, so we're gonna
- 12:54Speaker 1: be paying tribute to John all week long, just like
- 12:57Speaker 1: we were kind of doing with the band this week
- 12:59Speaker 1: for Thanksgiving and next week's Question of the Week. When
- 13:02Speaker 1: you're listening to that Lenin episode, I want you guys
- 13:04Speaker 1: to be thinking about just it's an obvious one. We've talked.
- 13:06Speaker 1: We talked about this before, but we didn't give it
- 13:09Speaker 1: enough time as I think it deserves. When you're listening
- 13:12Speaker 1: to the Lenin episode next week, be thinking about UH
- 13:15Speaker 1: solo beatles. Be thinking about which Beatles solo career you
- 13:20Speaker 1: like the most. Is it John's? Is it? Paul's? Is it? George's?
- 13:25Speaker 1: Is it? Ring Goes. There's a lot to dive into here,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and I know you guys are passionate about it, so
- 13:31Speaker 1: be thinking about that when you're listening to the John
- 13:32Speaker 1: Lennon episode. I want to hear from the George Heads,
- 13:35Speaker 1: especially Get at Me six one seven nine oh six
- 13:37Speaker 1: six six three eight. But that's next week, all right.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Also this week in this episode, got a Diddy update
- 13:43Speaker 1: as usual in the UH and then the all access
- 13:45Speaker 1: portion of this episode, I'm going to share with you
- 13:48Speaker 1: my story about working with and meeting the band from
- 13:51Speaker 1: back when I was a kid. I'll be back right
- 13:53Speaker 1: after this with your voicemails, text and dms. All Right,
- 14:15Speaker 1: we are back, guys. I'm grateful for you. You know this.
- 14:18Speaker 1: It's Thanksgiving. It bears repeating, it needs to be said.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I love being able to talk to you every week.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I love being able to create stuff, put it out
- 14:28Speaker 1: into the world and just get feedback. From you guys
- 14:32Speaker 1: on what you think about it. It is truly a
- 14:34Speaker 1: gift and I am truly grateful that you guys allowed
- 14:38Speaker 1: me to do this and that you're here with me,
- 14:39Speaker 1: along for this ride. Some of you have been with
- 14:41Speaker 1: me since the beginning, going all the way back to
- 14:43Speaker 1: two thousand and eighteen. Can you believe that that's when
- 14:46Speaker 1: we launched Disgraceland and we're still telling stories. We're not
- 14:50Speaker 1: stopping anytime soon. We're finding new ways to bring you music,
- 14:54Speaker 1: storytelling and stories from the dark side of entertainment. Just
- 14:57Speaker 1: really grateful all you guys who hit me up every
- 15:00Speaker 1: week Instagram, email, in the Patreon wherever, keep doing it.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Thank you. Love being along for the ride with you guys.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I hope you all have an awesome Thanksgiving with your
- 15:12Speaker 1: families this week. And I'm hoping you're digging this this
- 15:15Speaker 1: last Waltz episode. I hope you're digging as well. How
- 15:19Speaker 1: we've been sort of theming our programming weeks, trying to
- 15:22Speaker 1: give you things in sort of bunches based on you know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: historical events, world events, whatever. It's like we've been talking
- 15:30Speaker 1: about last Waltz week here in Disgraceland, and you know,
- 15:33Speaker 1: we're talking about the greatest concert films, and I don't
- 15:35Speaker 1: think there's a close second. Some of you guys do.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Some of you guys think there's a a better concert
- 15:41Speaker 1: film than The Last Waltz, And who am I to disagree?
- 15:45Speaker 1: All right? Six months, seven nine oh six, six sixty
- 15:46Speaker 1: three eight, we're going to get into it all right now.
- 15:48Speaker 1: You can leave a voicemail, send me a text on
- 15:50Speaker 1: anything you know. The question of the week for next
- 15:52Speaker 1: week is going to be on the Beatles solo careers.
- 15:54Speaker 1: But for right now, like I said, let's check out
- 15:57Speaker 1: Chips in the three to oh three on the question
- 16:01Speaker 1: of the greatest concert film for music history.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Yo, this is Chips from the three h three Colorful
- 16:07Speaker 3: Colorado answering your question this week about the greatest concert
- 16:13Speaker 3: film of all time. I do believe it's got to
- 16:18Speaker 3: be stop making sense talking heads. A long time ago,
- 16:22Speaker 3: I remember walking downstairs while my parents were making dinner.
- 16:26Speaker 3: They're mid jam of found a Job band, and that
- 16:30Speaker 3: shit really locked me in, stuck me in immediately. Been
- 16:34Speaker 3: into them guys since ever since. You know, and yeah,
- 16:39Speaker 3: the iconic Big.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Suit, the Beautiful Lamp Dance with Naives Melody, all those
- 16:46Speaker 4: songs so touching, and watching that shit, oh chills.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Man, amazing. It's no awesome behind the scenes or anything
- 16:55Speaker 3: like that. Nothing crazy, just the concert. But I do
- 16:58Speaker 3: believe that's got to be a really good contender, and personally,
- 17:03Speaker 3: that's my greatest of all time. That's my goat right there.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, tootle.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Chips, thanks to the call.
- 17:11Speaker 4: My man.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, stop making sense. I love it. It's fantastic,
- 17:19Speaker 1: it's great. I understand why you're sucked into it, especially
- 17:22Speaker 1: with that experience with your parents and your family, and
- 17:24Speaker 1: so much of this is is subjective, right, I mean,
- 17:28Speaker 1: so much of my loving the Last Waltz is because
- 17:31Speaker 1: of the experience I had watching it with my friends
- 17:33Speaker 1: when I was a young adult. Blew my mind. And
- 17:36Speaker 1: I get it. But I can't go there with putting
- 17:39Speaker 1: it above the last Walts. Not that you necessarily are
- 17:41Speaker 1: put but you know that that is the question. And
- 17:45Speaker 1: on that question, seven three to two rites in and
- 17:47Speaker 1: this is I'm interested in this one because it it
- 17:51Speaker 1: reveals my ignorance, and I like when I'm hip to things,
- 17:54Speaker 1: or at least I'm reminded, or at least I'm reminded
- 17:57Speaker 1: of things that I should be hipped to seven three
- 17:59Speaker 1: to two rights in Hey, Jake Mark in the seven
- 18:02Speaker 1: three to two checking in with a great concert documentary
- 18:05Speaker 1: Prince's Sign of the Times from dropping off risers in
- 18:09Speaker 1: those high heeled boots to dancing like James Brown to
- 18:11Speaker 1: a sweet version of Little Red Corvette at the piano
- 18:15Speaker 1: and well Sheila E on drums, it's Prince at his best.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Check it out. I will check it out. I've never
- 18:21Speaker 1: seen Sign of the Times. I think I was burned
- 18:25Speaker 1: by Purple Rain. I don't love Purple Rain. I'm not
- 18:28Speaker 1: gonna lie. I mean, do you, honestly do you really
- 18:32Speaker 1: love Purple Rain? Not talking about the song or the record,
- 18:35Speaker 1: I'm talking about the movie. I mean, seriously, do you
- 18:37Speaker 1: repeat watch Purple Rain. Prince, for all of the talent
- 18:42Speaker 1: that that man possessed, was not a good actor at all.
- 18:46Speaker 1: And the story is not great either. Honestly, Mars Day
- 18:50Speaker 1: might be the most interesting, might be the most interesting
- 18:55Speaker 1: part of Purple Rain. But I haven't seen Sign of
- 18:58Speaker 1: the Times, and I bet it's a lot better because
- 19:00Speaker 1: it is Prince in his natural habitat, which is performing
- 19:03Speaker 1: on stage, not acting under the stage lights. So I'm
- 19:06Speaker 1: gonna check that out. I appreciate the text seven three
- 19:08Speaker 1: to two, appreciate it reminding me of the Sign of
- 19:10Speaker 1: the times. Eight one and four comes at us with Hey, Jake,
- 19:13Speaker 1: my submission for other than the Last Waltz. Great music
- 19:17Speaker 1: concert films are Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen and
- 19:22Speaker 1: George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh. I had them as a tie.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Both were filmed extremely well, with some tricky photography. Both
- 19:28Speaker 1: featured Leon Russell as band leader slash musical director. Large
- 19:32Speaker 1: number of band members were in both concerts. Bangladesh featured Clapton,
- 19:36Speaker 1: Ringo and Dylan, who also performed in the Last Waltz.
- 19:39Speaker 1: I enjoyed the podcast as I do your others. Keep
- 19:40Speaker 1: with the great work, John T. John T from the
- 19:43Speaker 1: eight one to four great text Man. I have not
- 19:45Speaker 1: seen either of those either. Hey, I guess if I'm
- 19:49Speaker 1: going to ask the question what's the greatest concert film
- 19:51Speaker 1: of all time or in music history, I should at
- 19:55Speaker 1: least do my homework and watch some more concert films.
- 19:58Speaker 1: But I've never seen Bangladesh. I've read about it. I've
- 20:01Speaker 1: read a lot about it, and I've never seen Mad
- 20:04Speaker 1: Dogs an Englishman, I didn't even know what existed. How's
- 20:06Speaker 1: that I have the album? I guess the album is
- 20:09Speaker 1: the soundtrack? Is it? I don't know. And I knew
- 20:12Speaker 1: of Leon Russell's involvement with both, but I did not.
- 20:16Speaker 1: I have not seen either, and now I will. They
- 20:18Speaker 1: all kind of seem to be of a piece. I
- 20:20Speaker 1: guess right those two films with the Last Waltz, I
- 20:25Speaker 1: believe Bangladesh was it earlier? I don't know. I need
- 20:28Speaker 1: to find out. Maybe I'll be updating my opinion on
- 20:31Speaker 1: the greatest concert film. I don't know. We'll see nine
- 20:34Speaker 1: oh four Rights and Jake Spencer from the nine oh four.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you've seen the HBO series White
- 20:39Speaker 1: House Plumbers, but I think this connection should be pointed
- 20:41Speaker 1: out given the Woody episode in The Tramp Theory with
- 20:44Speaker 1: Woody's dad. In White House Plumbers, Woody plays e Howard Hunt.
- 20:48Speaker 1: The show is hilarious and anyone interested in Watergate should watch. Also,
- 20:52Speaker 1: I love The Last Waltz, but the best concert film,
- 20:54Speaker 1: hands down, is Stopped making Sense. That, of course, is
- 20:58Speaker 1: the Talking Heads concert film the Chips mentioned earlier. Spencer
- 21:04Speaker 1: haven't seen White House Plumbers. Uh, it's right up my alley.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I should see I should. I should have watched it
- 21:10Speaker 1: by now, but I have not. I think it's because
- 21:12Speaker 1: I know that it's kind of comical and I'm just
- 21:15Speaker 1: not ready for humor with this subject. I just want,
- 21:18Speaker 1: I want, I want All the President's Been Part two.
- 21:21Speaker 1: I know that's never coming, and uh, I don't know.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I should probably get over and watch this. I love Woodie,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I really do. And that other dude who's in it?
- 21:28Speaker 1: Who plays the other dude? What's his name? Josh? The
- 21:32Speaker 1: guy with the dogs? Who am I thinking of? Doesn't matter,
- 21:35Speaker 1: Let's keep going six one seven nine oh six six
- 21:37Speaker 1: sixty three eight voicemail and text. You can also DM
- 21:41Speaker 1: me at Disgrace Slam pod on Instagram on x I
- 21:45Speaker 1: even respond to Facebook every now and then. On Instagram,
- 21:47Speaker 1: Chuck the podcaster writes, oh man, I'm so excited to
- 21:50Speaker 1: walk my dog this morning. My favorite group from that
- 21:52Speaker 1: era and the best concert film hands down. Chuck is
- 21:55Speaker 1: of course talking about the band andast Waltz and Chuck
- 22:01Speaker 1: has a great taste. It's Chuck from stuff you should know.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Let's see who else we got here? Ask the Nawik
- 22:08Speaker 1: rights on Instagram. Thanks, I'll be thinking to this lore
- 22:11Speaker 1: while I'm playing this movie during Thanksgiving dinner. And I
- 22:14Speaker 1: read that because how many of you honestly put The
- 22:18Speaker 1: Last Walts on every Thanksgiving? I do. I do it
- 22:20Speaker 1: at some point. It might be a day late, it
- 22:22Speaker 1: might be a couple days before, but it's always a
- 22:25Speaker 1: reminder to watch it. And I'm never let down. And
- 22:28Speaker 1: I say this only because if you're not watching The
- 22:30Speaker 1: Last Walts on Thanksgiving, you should be. It's a great tradition.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I invite you to celebrate in it the way that
- 22:35Speaker 1: a lot of us are already doing. Okay, so go
- 22:37Speaker 1: ahead and check that out Last Waltz and get on Apple.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Probably get it somewhere else for free. But I own it.
- 22:42Speaker 1: What can I tell you? All Right, let's see over
- 22:45Speaker 1: on the old X machine. Gemma Lighton writes, Hey, I've
- 22:48Speaker 1: been listening to this Disgrace slam pod for a while now.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I'm so into it. I reckon some of you would
- 22:53Speaker 1: be too. It's great music and true crime. If that's
- 22:56Speaker 1: your jive, get on to it. Yeah, Gemma, I know you, Jemma,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I haven't seen you before. I appreciate you just popping
- 23:03Speaker 1: up an hour ago and shouting to the rooftops about disgracelam. Guys,
- 23:08Speaker 1: hit me up on x at disgracelam pod, give us
- 23:11Speaker 1: a follow. I wasn't active there for years, but I
- 23:15Speaker 1: have been recently and you can follow me there elsewhere.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I'm talking to people everywhere. I'm an equal opportunity talker,
- 23:23Speaker 1: okay at disgracelam pod, on the socials six one seven
- 23:26Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight on the voicemail
- 23:29Speaker 1: and text disgracelam pod at gmail on email and I
- 23:34Speaker 1: will be back in the flash read some of your
- 23:36Speaker 1: emails and give you a little ditty update and talk
- 23:39Speaker 1: about some other stuff in just one moment. All right,
- 23:57Speaker 1: we are back, and as promised, you're Sean Comb's update.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Here it is. Listen. I thought we were going to
- 24:01Speaker 1: get on Friday. Now this is interesting for a couple
- 24:06Speaker 1: different reasons. I thought we were going to get news
- 24:09Speaker 1: on whether or not the judge was granting bail to Diddy.
- 24:13Speaker 1: The hearing was on Friday. It's been postponed, and there's
- 24:16Speaker 1: been a couple different hearings already this week, and I
- 24:19Speaker 1: think there's gonna be another one today as of this
- 24:21Speaker 1: recording on Wednesday. That will decide this the fate of
- 24:25Speaker 1: Sean Combs and his bail, and the fact that this
- 24:29Speaker 1: has not been sussed out and was not sussed out
- 24:31Speaker 1: quickly and one hearing is telling, and I don't think
- 24:35Speaker 1: it's good for the prosecution. So I'm not going to
- 24:39Speaker 1: get into all the legal mumbo jemo and the drama
- 24:42Speaker 1: of it here from the courtroom. It's not that dramatic. Actually,
- 24:46Speaker 1: you read these accounts and they make it seem like it's,
- 24:48Speaker 1: you know, law and order or something, and it's not.
- 24:51Speaker 1: It's a lot of just kind of dry legal maneuvering.
- 24:54Speaker 1: But there is drama in the fact that there wasn't
- 24:57Speaker 1: a ruling, like I said, and there is a question
- 25:01Speaker 1: of how authorities handled legal I should put quotes around
- 25:06Speaker 1: that legal materials, air quotes around legal because there's a
- 25:10Speaker 1: question of if or not, of whether or not they're
- 25:12Speaker 1: actually legal documents of how authorities handled Ditty's legal documents
- 25:17Speaker 1: in his cell. So I just want to I want
- 25:19Speaker 1: to say this, I said it before, and I don't
- 25:21Speaker 1: think this is going to happen, but there is a
- 25:23Speaker 1: slight chance that the case gets tossed completely because of this. Again,
- 25:28Speaker 1: I don't think that's going to happen, but in the
- 25:30Speaker 1: you know what, ten percent chance that it does, I
- 25:32Speaker 1: want to be on record at least having brought you
- 25:35Speaker 1: that possibility. So that's what I'm doing here. So that's
- 25:38Speaker 1: going on. The Other thing that's going on is Ditty's
- 25:42Speaker 1: defense is making a really good case on why he
- 25:44Speaker 1: should be released. And I would say beginning of this week,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I thought there was a better than fifty percent chance
- 25:57Speaker 1: that Diddy gets released. As of what I have read
- 26:01Speaker 1: up to this point today, I would put it back
- 26:03Speaker 1: at even odds that he's released on bail. On bail,
- 26:07Speaker 1: not that the case is thrown out. There is another
- 26:10Speaker 1: very dramatic piece of news this week related to Shawn
- 26:15Speaker 1: Combs's court case and a couple other sort of just
- 26:17Speaker 1: kind of conspiracy gossipy, big name things that came out,
- 26:22Speaker 1: which that's what the that's what they call a tease,
- 26:25Speaker 1: which I won't tease you for too long on I'll
- 26:27Speaker 1: give you that information. But the prosecutor from the Southern
- 26:30Speaker 1: District of New York, the federal prosecutor who's leading this
- 26:33Speaker 1: whole thing, resigned this week. Now the scuttle but there
- 26:37Speaker 1: is that that has more to do with our president
- 26:40Speaker 1: elect than it has to do with Shawn Combs. But still,
- 26:44Speaker 1: this is the face of the investigation, and he has
- 26:47Speaker 1: now resigned. This is the face of the Shawan Combs investigation,
- 26:51Speaker 1: and he has now resigned. What that means, I don't know,
- 26:55Speaker 1: but it is worth mentioning now. So we're going to know.
- 26:59Speaker 1: You might know by Thanksgiving when you're listening to this
- 27:01Speaker 1: episode if Shawn Combs got out or not. But I
- 27:03Speaker 1: would say fifty to fifty maybe forty nine to fifty
- 27:06Speaker 1: one that he doesn't get out. It's close. We'll see.
- 27:09Speaker 1: They're doing a walkthrough of the apartment where he will
- 27:11Speaker 1: be living if he is to be released. Sorry, defense
- 27:15Speaker 1: attorneys are doing that today for the judge, I believe
- 27:19Speaker 1: at the judge's request. And there's all these stipulations that
- 27:22Speaker 1: they're proposing that Combs's attorneys are proposing for if he
- 27:26Speaker 1: is released security, he won't have access to the internet,
- 27:29Speaker 1: he'll be under security lock and key, basically won't have
- 27:35Speaker 1: access to a phone except to talk to his lawyers.
- 27:38Speaker 1: So it seems like they're kind of making they're creating
- 27:41Speaker 1: a pathway for this to happen. But again, we don't know.
- 27:44Speaker 1: We shall see Now, in more interesting news, Jamie Fox
- 27:49Speaker 1: is making some fascinating news lately. There's a lot of people,
- 27:52Speaker 1: like we have talked about this, I believe, who have
- 27:56Speaker 1: attended Jamie Fox's taping of his Netflix special which is
- 28:00Speaker 1: coming on December tenth, and they are claiming that Jamie
- 28:05Speaker 1: Fox in the special discloses information about Sean Combs's treatment
- 28:13Speaker 1: of him, specifically how he was drugged and how he
- 28:20Speaker 1: Jamie Fox dropped a dime on Combs to the Feds,
- 28:24Speaker 1: and that's why Diddy was arrested. Is this true? I
- 28:28Speaker 1: do not know, but you have a lot of people
- 28:32Speaker 1: saying the same damn thing at the same damn time
- 28:35Speaker 1: and putting their credibility on the line doing so. It
- 28:38Speaker 1: could be some hoax, it could be completely fake. I
- 28:42Speaker 1: do not know, but this shit drops on December tenth,
- 28:45Speaker 1: and I'm getting my popcorn ready for that Jamie Fox
- 28:48Speaker 1: special on Netflix. And no, this isn't an ad for Netflix.
- 28:51Speaker 1: This is just something that's happening in the world and
- 28:53Speaker 1: I'm letting you guys know about it because it is
- 28:55Speaker 1: music and true crime. Now the other final thing here
- 28:58Speaker 1: on Diddy, and then I'm gonna move on. Bron James
- 29:00Speaker 1: was at a La Rams game in his skybox and
- 29:04Speaker 1: the dude a couple of rows in front of him
- 29:06Speaker 1: was just harassing him brutally about Lebron's alleged involvement at
- 29:12Speaker 1: the Diddy parties. And just you know, if you want
- 29:14Speaker 1: a quick laugh, if you're no fan of Lebron, go
- 29:18Speaker 1: on the old Internet and search that up. You won't
- 29:20Speaker 1: be let down. All right, let's do some emails. I'm
- 29:23Speaker 1: a little floored at the amount of incoming emails that
- 29:27Speaker 1: we received on the Kennedy assassination and very little actually
- 29:35Speaker 1: on concert films. It's rare that the previous subject just
- 29:39Speaker 1: keeps going and going and going and going. But that's
- 29:41Speaker 1: the case, and there's a lot, there's a lot to
- 29:44Speaker 1: get into. You guys love sharing this, You love sharing
- 29:46Speaker 1: your conspiracy theories, and I get it. It's fascinating. I'm
- 29:50Speaker 1: trying to keep it here to our corner of the street,
- 29:53Speaker 1: and I'm going to read this one from Grayson Schmidt,
- 29:55Speaker 1: which is very short, very concise. Grayson goes on to say, hey,
- 30:00Speaker 1: nice job talking about Bush and JFK. One thousand percent
- 30:04Speaker 1: he was involved or had knowledge of the hit. This
- 30:08Speaker 1: is some good stuff. About him, and then Grayson gives
- 30:11Speaker 1: this article I'm going to invite you all to check
- 30:14Speaker 1: out called Idaho Observer deathbed Confessions photos support claims that
- 30:19Speaker 1: George H. W. Bush, and then you know, you can
- 30:25Speaker 1: go check out the rest. I'm not gonna read the
- 30:27Speaker 1: whole thing, just Idaho Observer Deathbed Confessions search that up. Now,
- 30:33Speaker 1: on the issue of conspiracy, this is not This is
- 30:36Speaker 1: a hill that I'm going to waste this battle on.
- 30:39Speaker 1: There's clearly interest here. Okay, you guys are clearly interested
- 30:43Speaker 1: in talking about this stuff, and I'm interested in talking
- 30:45Speaker 1: about it, and I want to find a way to
- 30:48Speaker 1: talk about it. There's no room to talk about it here.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And there's has just conspiracies as they relate to John F. Kennedy,
- 30:54Speaker 1: which is the big enchilada, that's the super Bowl, like
- 30:57Speaker 1: we talked about, we talked about this last week, where
- 30:59Speaker 1: there's yesterday's conspiracy is today's fact. And there should be
- 31:03Speaker 1: a way for us to talk about this that doesn't
- 31:06Speaker 1: require tinfoil hats, because there are a lot of conspiracies
- 31:09Speaker 1: that are connected to a lot of the musicians that
- 31:11Speaker 1: we're talking about as well, and I don't mean talking
- 31:14Speaker 1: about them though in a way that's like, we believe this,
- 31:17Speaker 1: it's just objectively you can be talking about it in
- 31:20Speaker 1: a way it's like, isn't the shit nuts that people
- 31:22Speaker 1: actually believe the Earth is flat? Well, flat earthers are
- 31:25Speaker 1: fucking fascinating to me. Not that I want to go
- 31:28Speaker 1: down that road, but as those types of conspiracies apply
- 31:31Speaker 1: to the subjects that we are discussing weekly, I think
- 31:35Speaker 1: it's worth getting into, and I'm clearly getting the indication
- 31:38Speaker 1: from you guys that you think it's worth it as well.
- 31:40Speaker 1: The problem is, this episode's already these episodes here, the
- 31:43Speaker 1: Aftterboarty episodes are already too long. So I don't know
- 31:46Speaker 1: where the hell we're going to do it on social
- 31:48Speaker 1: media on zoom. I don't know. We'll figure it out.
- 31:52Speaker 1: We'll find a way to do it, because when you
- 31:54Speaker 1: guys talk, I'm trying to listen. Here give you a
- 31:56Speaker 1: case in point. I think I might have mentioned this
- 31:58Speaker 1: last week. I'm fascinated with this now, you guys. The
- 32:01Speaker 1: Britney Murphy episode of Disgraceland is one of the most
- 32:06Speaker 1: listened to episodes of twenty twenty four, and we can't
- 32:11Speaker 1: figure out why. It's not like Britney Murphy is a
- 32:18Speaker 1: beloved musician. Like this upcoming rewind episode, the one You're
- 32:21Speaker 1: Gonna hear next to Your Feet tomorrow, is on David Bowie.
- 32:23Speaker 1: David Bowie occupies rare air in music history with music fans.
- 32:28Speaker 1: He's like Prince, who I mentioned before. He's weird and
- 32:31Speaker 1: wonderful and he's beloved. People love him, and they love
- 32:35Speaker 1: him in a different way than they love Bob Dylan.
- 32:37Speaker 1: They love him in a different way than they love
- 32:39Speaker 1: Mick Jagger. They love him in a different way that
- 32:41Speaker 1: they love Michael Jackson. It's just different. Bowie and Prince
- 32:44Speaker 1: are beloved. Britney Murphy. What the fuck why is the
- 32:48Speaker 1: Britney Murphy episode? I think it's gonna be the most
- 32:52Speaker 1: downloaded new episode of ours from twenty twenty four. But why?
- 32:57Speaker 1: And I think it has something to do with the
- 32:59Speaker 1: kidspira around her death or the thinking around her death
- 33:03Speaker 1: and the unsolved mystery of her death, I should say,
- 33:07Speaker 1: But to my point, there's a Britney Murphy connection to
- 33:10Speaker 1: Sean Combs. And this is how it always happens with
- 33:13Speaker 1: me with conspiracies. I see something on the Internet and
- 33:15Speaker 1: I go, no fucking way and I don't pay attention
- 33:17Speaker 1: to it. Then I see it again and I go
- 33:19Speaker 1: Then I see it a third time and I click
- 33:20Speaker 1: on it. Then I see it a fourth time, and
- 33:22Speaker 1: I'm stuck in the fucking wormhole four hours later reading
- 33:24Speaker 1: about it. The Britney Murphy connection through Ashton Kutcher to
- 33:27Speaker 1: Shawn Colmbs and kim Porter is really really interesting and
- 33:31Speaker 1: worth getting into. But it's like a forty five minute
- 33:34Speaker 1: conversation forty five minutes that we don't yet have that
- 33:36Speaker 1: we're going to have to try to figure out how
- 33:37Speaker 1: to have. That's what I'm getting at. And you know,
- 33:40Speaker 1: the JFK thing I think is teaching me that based
- 33:42Speaker 1: on your emails from this week, I'm not going to
- 33:43Speaker 1: read all the emails again. We would just be here
- 33:46Speaker 1: going through conspiracy, conspiracy, conspiracy. But anyhow, that's where my thinking, Zach.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I'm going off on a wild tangent here. But I
- 33:53Speaker 1: did get to the point that I wanted to make
- 33:55Speaker 1: here about Bowie. Bowie's coming up in the rewind episode
- 33:58Speaker 1: of Disgrace. Landwich is going to hit feed next. Check
- 34:00Speaker 1: that out. It's a very weird episode. It's one of
- 34:03Speaker 1: the weirdest I think I've ever written. I was reading
- 34:06Speaker 1: a lot about Fourth Way at the time, and I
- 34:08Speaker 1: was reading a lot about death. And you know, the
- 34:12Speaker 1: way that Bowie treated his death as almost almost as
- 34:17Speaker 1: an art project, it really spoke to me in this deep, deep,
- 34:22Speaker 1: deep way. I wrote it in the in the middle
- 34:24Speaker 1: of the lockdown as well. The pandemic. I think that
- 34:27Speaker 1: had something to do with the craziness of it. It
- 34:29Speaker 1: goes pretty nuts there at the end, and I welcome
- 34:31Speaker 1: to you to buy a ticket and come along for
- 34:33Speaker 1: the ride with me on it one more time. All right,
- 34:36Speaker 1: check that out. It's coming your way. It's coming your
- 34:38Speaker 1: way with a lot of black magic, a lot of
- 34:39Speaker 1: Alistair Crowley, some Zeppelin. I think. Does Zeppelin show up
- 34:43Speaker 1: in the Bowie episode or does Bowie show up in
- 34:45Speaker 1: my Zeppelin episode? I don't know either way. Check it out.
- 34:48Speaker 1: This episode, on the other hand, is nearing its end,
- 34:51Speaker 1: but you know, the after party continues for our All
- 34:53Speaker 1: Access members. Sign up today you're going to hear an
- 34:55Speaker 1: extended version of this after party or this week. I'm
- 34:57Speaker 1: going to get into my experience with the and as
- 35:00Speaker 1: a young man, my experience with Rick Danko. Leave on Garth,
