- 0:21Speaker 1: Our thanks to Mel Kiper Jr. for joining us in
- 0:24Speaker 1: set one.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Taylor is right. Matt Rushmore of guests.
- 0:26Speaker 3: He is.
- 0:27Speaker 2: He's number one on my list. Chris Sims is going
- 0:29Speaker 2: to be offended by that. What, Mikey?
- 0:32Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Who was right? Taylor? Who? You were both right, all right?
- 0:39Speaker 2: But you were wrong about a fork.
- 0:42Speaker 3: No, I'm trying to figure out who Taylor is.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry. I meant Lance. My bad. We'll get
- 0:47Speaker 2: to that in a second.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I know where we're going here, and we'll get to
- 0:51Speaker 1: Lance in just a second. I was just trying to
- 0:54Speaker 1: promote Charles Huff, who's coming up here in about five
- 0:58Speaker 1: to ten minutes here, the head coach at Memphis. And, Mikey,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I did not realize– that we have spoken to Charles
- 1:03Speaker 1: Huff before. We spoke to him right after Marshall beat
- 1:06Speaker 1: Notre Dame, and now he has moved on to Memphis,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and I am excited to talk to him in a
- 1:11Speaker 1: couple of minutes. Now let's get to Lance, okay? Because
- 1:14Speaker 1: we had Mel on, and it started. Mikey, what happened here?
- 1:18Speaker 1: Because when we first got Mel on, he was talking
- 1:22Speaker 1: to Taylor as Taylor, and then as the interview went on,
- 1:25Speaker 1: suddenly Taylor became Lance.
- 1:28Speaker 3: So, peek behind the curtain when.
- 1:31Speaker 4: when Mel joined the zoom, I was talking to Mel,
- 1:34Speaker 4: you guys hadn't joined yet.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And he asked me who was going to be on.
- 1:37Speaker 4: And I said, it's going to be me and Stu
- 1:40Speaker 4: Gatz and Taylor. And he goes, Oh, you Stu Gatz
- 1:43Speaker 4: and Lance. And I said, no, his name's Taylor. And
- 1:46Speaker 4: he goes, Oh, I'm sorry. I was thinking of somebody else.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I don't know why I thought Lance, it was another
- 1:51Speaker 4: producer from another show.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I was like, okay.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Problem fixed. Right. Yes.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Nope.
- 2:00Speaker 5: But to Stu's point, the interview started, and every time
- 2:04Speaker 5: I asked a question, he would say... Yeah. Taylor kept
- 2:07Speaker 5: saying Taylor. And then Mikey texted me on the side
- 2:10Speaker 5: and said, do you hear that? He keeps calling you Lance.
- 2:13Speaker 5: And I said, no, I haven't, I haven't noticed that.
- 2:17Speaker 5: And then the next time I asked the question, I
- 2:19Speaker 5: was like, let me hear, let me listen in specifically
- 2:22Speaker 5: how he refers to me.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 5: And it couldn't have been a more clear Lance.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:26Speaker 1: So what happened there was I think front end, he,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it was established Taylor.
- 2:30Speaker 2: He got it.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And then he just, he lapsed back. It happens with
- 2:33Speaker 1: age Taylor. He laughs back into Lance.
- 2:35Speaker 2: That's it. I mean, I don't know what to tell you.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Who was he thinking of? I mean, Trey Lance?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Lance Bass?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Now I want to come up with top five Lances
- 2:47Speaker 2: of all time.
- 2:47Speaker 5: Lance Armstrong.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And Lance Vipolis would be number one.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Wow, Lance a lot.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Lance Vipolis. Oh, my God. How great is that, man?
- 2:58Speaker 2: By the way, are you guys down with the idea where.
- 3:01Speaker 1: We draft flowers for the garden and And Mel breaks
- 3:04Speaker 1: down our picks as we're drafting them.
- 3:06Speaker 2: How about that?
- 3:08Speaker 3: I think I.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Would feel more comfortable sharing with Mel a big board
- 3:13Speaker 4: of my college football players than I would be the
- 3:16Speaker 4: wrath that'll be if I pick the wrong flowers. Because
- 3:19Speaker 4: he seemed really into it.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yes, yes. Well, of course he is. He's Mel.
- 3:24Speaker 5: And it seems like Mel Kuyper wouldn't respect a first-round
- 3:28Speaker 5: pick of roses. Like, in Mel Kuyper's eyes.
- 3:30Speaker 2: No, too easy.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 5: In Mel Kuyper's eyes, the roses is the overrated prospect
- 3:34Speaker 5: coming out of college.
- 3:35Speaker 1: The roses are in the minor leagues if you're Mel Kuyper.
- 3:38Speaker 1: The way he cares about flowers and gardens. He has
- 3:40Speaker 1: no time for roses.
- 3:42Speaker 2: He wants petunias. I mean, it's the only other flower
- 3:47Speaker 2: I knew.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Pansies.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Ah, the pansies. He loves the pansies. He really does. Um, it's, uh, he,
- 3:55Speaker 2: he really is.
- 3:55Speaker 1: I'm not certain there is a better guest I've ever
- 3:58Speaker 1: had on any show at any point in my 20
- 4:02Speaker 1: plus years of doing this. Taylor is so, I'm sorry.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Lance is so right about this. Um, he's the greatest.
- 4:08Speaker 1: He just knows how to fill time. Like you have
- 4:10Speaker 1: followups and Mel will answer your followup within his answer
- 4:14Speaker 1: for the first question.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It's amazing.
- 4:16Speaker 5: I feel like Charles Huff could give him a run
- 4:18Speaker 5: for his money because I love Charles Huff. The more
- 4:22Speaker 5: I listen to Charles Huff talk at Memphis, the more
- 4:26Speaker 5: I wish I could go back to college and play
- 4:28Speaker 5: college football for Charles Huff.
- 4:30Speaker 1: So it's odd because Charles Huff is very old school.
- 4:33Speaker 1: He's very strict, but his kids seem to love him.
- 4:35Speaker 1: They don't seem to care. They just seem to follow him.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Like he's one of the great leaders, unknown leaders we
- 4:41Speaker 1: have in.
- 4:42Speaker 2: The sport of college football. He's great.
- 4:45Speaker 1: He was great with me and Mikey when he came
- 4:47Speaker 1: on after the Notre Dame victory. In fact, it just
- 4:50Speaker 1: dawned on me, I think, and I don't know if
- 4:52Speaker 1: this offer still holds. We're going to find out when
- 4:54Speaker 1: we speak to Charles Huff. But Mikey, didn't he offer
- 4:57Speaker 1: me the opportunity if you and I went to a
- 5:00Speaker 1: Marshall game, which we often say we're going to do,
- 5:02Speaker 1: but we never do it, that he would allow me
- 5:05Speaker 1: to call a play?
- 5:08Speaker 3: He did.
- 5:08Speaker 4: He said you could probably call the first play if
- 5:12Speaker 4: you wanted.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I got a listener of the show in Huntington, West Virginia,
- 5:17Speaker 5: just walking through the streets, through their day, through campus,
- 5:21Speaker 5: and looking and being like, is that Stu Gatz? What
- 5:24Speaker 5: has happened in his life that he's ended up in Huntington,
- 5:27Speaker 5: West Virginia?
- 5:30Speaker 4: Why does he have one of those Denny's menus and
- 5:32Speaker 4: he keeps covering his mouth with it and yelling into
- 5:34Speaker 4: a microphone?
- 5:36Speaker 2: So now he's at Memphis. They're 1-0. They beat Dan Mullen.
- 5:40Speaker 1: He had an Elvis impersonator come out. Mel was right
- 5:42Speaker 1: about that, by the way, as well. So he beat
- 5:45Speaker 1: Dan Mullen. They were down at half. They came back.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Big halftime speech by Charles Huff. Do you think the
- 5:50Speaker 1: offer is still going to hold? Because the school, it's
- 5:53Speaker 1: slightly bigger in terms of profile. He has a chance,
- 5:55Speaker 1: people are saying, of making the playoffs. If I ask
- 5:58Speaker 1: Huff if I can call a play at a Memphis game,
- 6:01Speaker 1: do you think the offer is going to hold?
- 6:03Speaker 4: I think the offer could hold. I'm just wondering how
- 6:06Speaker 4: far up Huff can climb. before you can't call a
- 6:10Speaker 4: play no matter what happens.
- 6:12Speaker 2: One more stop.
- 6:15Speaker 5: And Memphis has been a school historically the past couple
- 6:18Speaker 5: of years where their coaches have springboarded to bigger programs.
- 6:22Speaker 5: You look at Justin Fuente, Mike Norvell, Ryan Silverfield going
- 6:26Speaker 5: to Arkansas, Virginia Tech, and Florida State. But, Stu, I'm
- 6:30Speaker 5: looking at Memphis' schedule.
- 6:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Big one, September 12th at Boise State.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 6:36Speaker 5: But I want to go to Memphis.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a far trip.
- 6:38Speaker 5: The game I have scheduled is October 22nd versus ECU.
- 6:44Speaker 5: And the reason why I'm picking this game is because
- 6:47Speaker 5: it's the Thursday college football game. So it's the standalone
- 6:50Speaker 5: spot on ESPN2. Right.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So we get maximum exposure. We get to get home
- 6:55Speaker 1: and enjoy our weekends. We don't miss any of the
- 6:58Speaker 1: good college football games. that are going on, and I
- 7:01Speaker 1: get to call a play.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I was thinking it.
- 7:04Speaker 5: You just said.
- 7:07Speaker 3: It.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I can read your mind, Lance.

- 8:45Speaker 1: The last time we spoke to this man, Charles Hoff,
- 8:48Speaker 1: he was coming off a victory over Notre Dame at Marshall.
- 8:51Speaker 1: He promised I could call a play. I never attended
- 8:54Speaker 1: a game. He said if I showed up to the game,
- 8:56Speaker 1: he would allow me to call a play. And now
- 8:58Speaker 1: he's coaching at Memphis, and they just beat UNLV over
- 9:02Speaker 1: the weekend.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Coach, do you recall allowing me?
- 9:05Speaker 1: You said you would allow me to call a play,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and I'm calling BS on you because there's no way
- 9:09Speaker 1: if I showed up.
- 9:10Speaker 2: To that game, you would have allowed me to call
- 9:12Speaker 2: a play.
- 9:13Speaker 6: Trust me, I'm a man of my word. So if
- 9:15Speaker 6: you showed up, you would have called a play. Probably
- 9:18Speaker 6: would have been much better than us coaches. So you
- 9:21Speaker 6: would have been great. Or at least you wouldn't have
- 9:23Speaker 6: had to worry about getting fired if it was a
- 9:25Speaker 6: bad play.
- 9:30Speaker 1: He says it with a smile. Are you enjoying Memphis?
- 9:33Speaker 1: This is your first season at Memphis. You had a
- 9:35Speaker 1: big victory over the weekend. We'll get to that in
- 9:37Speaker 1: just a second. But are you enjoying the city of Memphis?
- 9:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been great.
- 9:41Speaker 6: Obviously, I've had time in this city before, especially in
- 9:44Speaker 6: this state recruiting and.
- 9:47Speaker 3: The welcome, the community, the fans have been great.
- 9:50Speaker 6: Obviously, we're still a work in progress in the football department,
- 9:54Speaker 6: but we're making strides. You know, the administration has been great.
- 9:57Speaker 6: We got a lot of work to do, not just football. wise,
- 10:00Speaker 6: but what we're trying to do here. But couldn't be
- 10:03Speaker 6: prouder and happier to be around these group of people,
- 10:05Speaker 6: these players, the.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Fans, the whole nine.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Coach, the win against UNLV was billed as a huge
- 10:11Speaker 5: game for the group of six for that playoff spot.
- 10:13Speaker 5: How do you keep your team from getting caught up
- 10:15Speaker 5: in that narrative, especially after the win?
- 10:18Speaker 6: Yeah, like I told him on Sunday, a great job,
- 10:21Speaker 6: but it was only four games that day. So, I mean,
- 10:24Speaker 6: you kind of somebody had to be the one that
- 10:27Speaker 6: he talked about. You know, I mean, playing week zero
- 10:31Speaker 6: obviously creates a lot of hype and attention. Everyone's ready
- 10:35Speaker 6: for football to come back.
- 10:37Speaker 3: And we did some good things. And, you know, like
- 10:39Speaker 3: I told him.
- 10:40Speaker 6: We didn't just come through all we came through from
- 10:43Speaker 6: the time we've got here to now just to win
- 10:45Speaker 6: a game. We talked about things we wanted to put
- 10:48Speaker 6: in place. And then when you go back and watch
- 10:50Speaker 6: the film, you see that we still have a lot
- 10:52Speaker 6: of work to do. So it's a different.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Day and age.
- 10:55Speaker 6: Don't get me wrong. There's a lot of noise. We
- 10:58Speaker 6: talked about that a little bit in the offseason. There's
- 10:59Speaker 6: a lot of noise that comes with winning and losing.
- 11:04Speaker 6: And managing that from our perspective in-house is is probably
- 11:09Speaker 6: as important as how we play.
- 11:12Speaker 3: So we focus a lot on that.
- 11:14Speaker 6: We talk to our players about it, you know, the
- 11:16Speaker 6: old way you'd move on after 24 hours and you
- 11:18Speaker 6: wouldn't hear about it. But now, because of the way
- 11:21Speaker 6: the media runs, you know, Monday morning, it starts all
- 11:24Speaker 6: over again. And you're trying to find a balance of
- 11:27Speaker 6: letting your players be involved in the, you know, the
- 11:30Speaker 6: media attention for their branding and their value. You're trying
- 11:33Speaker 6: to find a way to balance the head coach doing
- 11:36Speaker 6: interviews throughout the week. So you're still marketing the program,
- 11:40Speaker 6: but you still got to move on. So it's a
- 11:42Speaker 6: tough job, but I think where we are in today's world,
- 11:45Speaker 6: you got to kind of balance both.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Coach, you were down 14 to seven at half. You
- 11:49Speaker 1: outscored UNLV, I believe 20 to seven in the second half.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I have you as a coach who gives probably the
- 11:57Speaker 1: best halftime speech anywhere in college football.
- 11:59Speaker 2: What'd you tell the kids at halftime?
- 12:02Speaker 6: Well, I don't know about the best, but first of all,
- 12:05Speaker 6: I told him that we were playing just like I
- 12:07Speaker 6: was acting because I got a 15-yard penalty for questioning
- 12:12Speaker 6: a referee's tempo. And I was in the wrong. And
- 12:16Speaker 6: I told him, I said, guys, I apologize. You're playing
- 12:19Speaker 6: just like I'm acting. I said, and leadership leads emotions
- 12:22Speaker 6: and energy. And I said, well, just like we always
- 12:25Speaker 6: talk about, right, one is responding. So I'm going to
- 12:28Speaker 6: respond and show you guys how you should be acting
- 12:30Speaker 6: on the sidelines. And I'm asking you guys to respond
- 12:32Speaker 6: on the field. And we talked about our process. Our
- 12:34Speaker 6: process is a four-quarter, 60-minute process. We talk about playing
- 12:40Speaker 6: 60 minutes with a focus and intensity that another team
- 12:43Speaker 6: can't match. And I told them, I said, you're prepared
- 12:46Speaker 6: for this. So go challenge their physicality. Go challenge their toughness.
- 12:51Speaker 6: I told them, I don't think they're as tough as you.
- 12:54Speaker 6: So go challenge it and see if they'll punch back.
- 12:57Speaker 6: And we were able to have some success in the
- 12:58Speaker 6: second half. Our coaches did a really good job of
- 13:02Speaker 6: making some adjustments.
- 13:03Speaker 3: First game of the.
- 13:03Speaker 6: Year, there were some things that we were a little
- 13:06Speaker 6: bit chasing ghosts on that we thought we were going
- 13:08Speaker 6: to see but didn't see. So we were able to
- 13:10Speaker 6: kind of settle into what we were seeing. And then
- 13:12Speaker 6: the kids executed. I mean, they challenged their toughness. They
- 13:16Speaker 6: challenged their physicality. They leaned back on their process. They
- 13:20Speaker 6: leaned on each other and we were able to get
- 13:21Speaker 6: a win.
- 13:22Speaker 5: Coach, I don't know if you're a baseball fan, but
- 13:24Speaker 5: sometimes a manager has to get ejected to kind of
- 13:26Speaker 5: rile up the group. You can kind of spin that
- 13:29Speaker 5: penalty that you got into being like, this is what
- 13:31Speaker 5: got the team going.
- 13:32Speaker 6: Well, that's kind of what I was thinking after the penalty.
- 13:36Speaker 6: And then I was like, well, wait a minute, if
- 13:37Speaker 6: we don't score a touchdown here, that could be a
- 13:39Speaker 6: big moment in the game. But they bailed me out.
- 13:42Speaker 6: So I went to the tight end and I told him,
- 13:44Speaker 6: I said, I did that for you. I wanted you
- 13:45Speaker 6: to catch a touchdown pass. So He was like, thank you, coach.
- 13:48Speaker 6: I said, yeah, that's what I'm here for. I'm just
- 13:50Speaker 6: trying to motivate you guys.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Playing chess, not checkers. What a great spin job by you.
- 13:59Speaker 5: Coach, when Dan Mullen brings out Elvis, that started a
- 14:03Speaker 5: debate on our show. Does Elvis belong more to Memphis
- 14:06Speaker 5: or Las Vegas? Would you be in favor of settling
- 14:09Speaker 5: that on the field every year, Memphis, UNLV, For the
- 14:13Speaker 5: Elvis Bowl trophy.
- 14:14Speaker 2: No, there's no debate. I mean, when you think Elvis,
- 14:17Speaker 2: you think Memphis, right, Coach?
- 14:20Speaker 6: Well, to be honest, we probably had 80 guys on
- 14:26Speaker 6: the trip, 80 players.
- 14:29Speaker 3: None of them knew who Elvis is.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Just you and Dan Mullen.
- 14:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I knew who he was, and I didn't even
- 14:38Speaker 6: really pay attention to it. I saw it after the game.
- 14:41Speaker 6: um but none of our guys I mean now if
- 14:44Speaker 6: he'd had like Glorilla or Little Baby that might have
- 14:47Speaker 6: fired us up but I don't know if you can
- 14:50Speaker 6: get a rental Glorilla or a rental like Little Wayne
- 14:53Speaker 6: or Little Baby but none of our guys had no
- 14:56Speaker 6: clue who it was one of our guys was like
- 14:57Speaker 6: oh I thought that was their mascot all right so
- 15:00Speaker 6: I I don't know if it worked um obviously it
- 15:03Speaker 6: was it was great for for the fans and Like
- 15:06Speaker 6: I said, after the game, I realized it.
- 15:08Speaker 3: But I don't know.
- 15:09Speaker 6: I always thought Elvis was from Mississippi, to be completely honest.
- 15:12Speaker 6: And he actually grew up in Memphis and then obviously
- 15:16Speaker 6: had his residency in Vegas. So I guess we all
- 15:19Speaker 6: can kind of claim, you know, Elvis.
- 15:21Speaker 3: National treasure.
- 15:23Speaker 2: He's all of ours.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Um, was that as excited now you beat Notre Dame,
- 15:27Speaker 1: as I mentioned, but was that as excited as you've
- 15:30Speaker 1: been after a victory? Because we'll get to your celebration
- 15:33Speaker 1: in just a second here.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Uh, was that as excited as you've been?
- 15:38Speaker 3: Well, we work really hard, man.
- 15:40Speaker 6: And I, I live and die with every first down
- 15:43Speaker 6: every tackle because we, we put a lot of work in, man.
- 15:46Speaker 6: So I try to enjoy the games with the kids. Um,
- 15:51Speaker 6: Every time we win, I'm excited until I watch the film.
- 15:54Speaker 6: So it's all for me because I know how hard
- 15:57Speaker 6: these kids work. I know how many fans put so
- 16:01Speaker 6: much energy and time and commitment into this. There's a
- 16:04Speaker 6: lot of fans that spend a lot of money to
- 16:06Speaker 6: come all the way to Vegas to support their Tigers.
- 16:10Speaker 6: So whenever we can win, I just get excited because
- 16:13Speaker 6: I know it affects so many people. It affects the
- 16:15Speaker 6: kids in our locker room. It affects their families. It
- 16:18Speaker 6: affects the fans. So that's what gets me excited. And
- 16:22Speaker 6: then I watched the film and I get mad again.
- 16:23Speaker 3: So it kind of balances.
- 16:27Speaker 6: I think that Notre Dame and this win, they're two
- 16:30Speaker 6: different groups or two different stories. So the excitement is
- 16:33Speaker 6: probably the same for different reasons.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Coach, when people hear you say things after the game,
- 16:39Speaker 5: like no music, no ice cream truck, we don't do
- 16:41Speaker 5: fun things. They wonder how is that going to play
- 16:44Speaker 5: in recruiting? But If you follow college football, you've been
- 16:47Speaker 5: an elite recruiter at every stop you've been to. How
- 16:51Speaker 5: do you do it?
- 16:53Speaker 3: Yeah, well, there's the fine line, right?
- 16:57Speaker 6: I'm not Daddy Warbucks here and everybody hates me. There
- 17:02Speaker 6: are some things that we do where we have a
- 17:04Speaker 6: hyper sense of focus and business approach. And then there's
- 17:08Speaker 6: some things we do that is uberly fun. If we're
- 17:11Speaker 6: in a team meeting, We play music. Our guys in
- 17:14Speaker 6: position meetings, they play music while they're watching film. Like
- 17:16Speaker 6: they play music in the locker room. We play music
- 17:19Speaker 6: getting on the bus. We just don't play music in
- 17:22Speaker 6: between the actual practice time because it's hard to teach
- 17:25Speaker 6: when there's music blaring, right? So we try to minimize
- 17:28Speaker 6: the distractions, right? So we do a lot of teaching
- 17:31Speaker 6: in practice and it's hard to.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Teach with music on.
- 17:34Speaker 6: We don't do a lot of fun things because the
- 17:36Speaker 6: time that we spend with these guys, we eat up
- 17:39Speaker 6: a lot of their time. So I tell them all
- 17:41Speaker 6: the time, I'm not going to waste your time with
- 17:44Speaker 6: dodgeball and ice cream trucks. I'm going to waste your
- 17:47Speaker 6: time with helping you become a better football player, a
- 17:49Speaker 6: better man, and a better student. So when it's time
- 17:53Speaker 6: to go, go home. Don't want you standing around eating
- 17:55Speaker 6: ice cream. Go get out of here. Go be yourself.
- 17:58Speaker 6: And then again, ultimately, all the people that have an opinion,
- 18:03Speaker 6: I'm not recruiting them. I'm recruiting kids that want an
- 18:06Speaker 6: opportunity to create value for themselves and want a relationship,
- 18:10Speaker 6: want to be with a head coach that's willing and
- 18:13Speaker 6: available to develop that relationship to help them grow. You
- 18:16Speaker 6: tell them straightforward, this is how it is. I think
- 18:19Speaker 6: kids ultimately want discipline. They want accountability. They don't want
- 18:23Speaker 6: to be lied to and fluffed to and told, hey,
- 18:27Speaker 6: you're really, really good, and hey, everything is going to
- 18:29Speaker 6: be great. They want the truth. Who they're willing to
- 18:33Speaker 6: accept that from is the difference, right? They don't want
- 18:36Speaker 6: the truth from social media. They want the truth from
- 18:39Speaker 6: a person that has a relationship with them, that can
- 18:41Speaker 6: look them in the eye, be honest with them, and
- 18:42Speaker 6: help them grow.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Coach, just to be clear, you do love a good
- 18:46Speaker 2: ice cream truck, right? I mean, just a, yeah?
- 18:49Speaker 3: Yeah, if it's not during football time.
- 18:51Speaker 6: If you guys want to go on your own and
- 18:53Speaker 6: go downtown Memphis and get ice cream, go right ahead.
- 18:55Speaker 6: But while we're over here, we got a little bit
- 18:58Speaker 6: of time. We get these guys for six months, really, right,
- 19:00Speaker 6: when you talk about during the season. So you got
- 19:02Speaker 6: January to December, and some of these guys' college careers
- 19:05Speaker 6: are over. So I'm responsible for trying to help a
- 19:08Speaker 6: young man create value for his entire life in a 12- or.
- 19:11Speaker 3: A 10-month span.
- 19:14Speaker 6: I don't have time for ice cream trucks, right? So
- 19:16Speaker 6: I got to make sure that I'm maximizing that opportunity.
- 19:19Speaker 6: Some of these guys may go on to play in
- 19:21Speaker 6: the NFL.
- 19:22Speaker 3: A lot of them won't.
- 19:23Speaker 6: But the time that I spend with them in these
- 19:25Speaker 6: 10 months could change their life. So I try to
- 19:28Speaker 6: focus on that. They can chase ice cream trucks and
- 19:32Speaker 6: all that stuff when they get out of here. But
- 19:34Speaker 6: I just don't have enough time. It's not like the
- 19:36Speaker 6: old days where you had five years, right? I don't
- 19:39Speaker 6: have five years anymore. I get 10 months, sometimes less.
- 19:42Speaker 6: to change young men's lives. So I try to do
- 19:44Speaker 6: that with as much intentionality as possible.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Awesome. Coach, there's a large national conversation right now about NFL.
- 19:50Speaker 5: players trying to go back to college. I walked on
- 19:52Speaker 5: to the University of North Carolina. If I had a
- 19:54Speaker 5: fifth year right now, I'd be at Memphis.
- 19:58Speaker 2: So would I.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Well, look, if you're tough, physical, and don't mind no
- 20:03Speaker 6: music at practice, you'll fit right in.
- 20:06Speaker 4: You're out, Taylor.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Yeah. No, he doesn't care about music. This guy had
- 20:10Speaker 2: an open bar. He ordered a Shirley Temple, Coach. He
- 20:12Speaker 2: doesn't care. He's responsible.
- 20:13Speaker 6: This guy's taking care of his body.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Speaking of taking care of your body, what happened there
- 20:22Speaker 1: in the post-game celebration?
- 20:23Speaker 2: Did you miss time to jump? What was going on there?
- 20:26Speaker 6: No, well, I mean, our D-line was playing so well
- 20:29Speaker 6: that I wanted to give them another.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Sack, so I made sure.
- 20:33Speaker 6: that I sacrifice myself to get them another stat to
- 20:37Speaker 6: make them feel good.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Again, I'm all about the players, man. If I can
- 20:40Speaker 3: help the players, whether that's.
- 20:42Speaker 6: Motivating them and getting them 15 more yards to throw
- 20:44Speaker 6: a touchdown pass or getting them one more sack opportunity
- 20:48Speaker 6: before we leave, you know.
- 20:49Speaker 3: The Raiders stadium.
- 20:50Speaker 6: Some of those kids may never play in that stadium again.
- 20:51Speaker 6: So I wanted him to tackle one more person before
- 20:55Speaker 6: we got out of there.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Again, chestnut checkers. Yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 1: All right, Coach, I'm telling you, Taylor wants to play
- 21:05Speaker 1: at Memphis. I just want to call play for you.
- 21:06Speaker 1: So now I am promising if we attend the Memphis game, OK,
- 21:11Speaker 1: and we'll do it at home. Will I be allowed
- 21:14Speaker 1: to call one of your first plays on offense?
- 21:18Speaker 6: I'll let you call the first play on offense, whatever
- 21:20Speaker 6: game you make it to. And we'll make sure that
- 21:22Speaker 6: you're on the scoreboard for the result of if it
- 21:25Speaker 6: goes good or goes bad.
- 21:26Speaker 3: We'll leave it up to you.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Taylor, make this happen, please.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Just throw me on the plane to Memphis and just
- 21:33Speaker 1: get me there.
- 21:35Speaker 2: What game? Any game in particular or just pick a game?
- 21:37Speaker 3: Any game.
- 21:38Speaker 6: I don't want to handcuff you from your true ability,
- 21:41Speaker 6: your true calling.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 21:44Speaker 2: This is very exciting. And if the play works, do
- 21:47Speaker 2: I get to call another? I pushed it too far.
- 21:50Speaker 3: You can take my spot. We'll switch roles.
- 21:53Speaker 6: You can take all the credit. I'll do the podcast.
- 21:57Speaker 6: I'll critique. I'll have all the answers on Monday of
- 22:00Speaker 6: what you should have did.
- 22:01Speaker 3: I'll be good.
- 22:04Speaker 2: All right, Coach. We appreciate it.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Congratulations again on the 1-0 start.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Week 1 is coming up this week.
- 22:11Speaker 1: You guys have a shot at the playoffs, right? You
- 22:13Speaker 1: tell your kids that. You have a shot in the
- 22:15Speaker 1: 12-team playoff. Memphis has a shot.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Why not?
- 22:18Speaker 6: We got an opportunity to play really well this week,
- 22:20Speaker 6: and that's the reality of it.
- 22:21Speaker 3: There's a lot of football left. I said before the game,
- 22:24Speaker 3: it's one game.
- 22:25Speaker 6: I mean, if we don't win another game, no one
- 22:27Speaker 6: will ever remember me chest bumping and falling.
- 22:30Speaker 3: No one will ever remember me going to Vegas. No
- 22:33Speaker 3: one will ever remember.
- 22:34Speaker 6: So we got an opportunity to go 1-0 this week
- 22:36Speaker 6: with some momentum from last week and some things we
- 22:39Speaker 6: can learn from. And then we got to try and
- 22:41Speaker 6: find out how to do it again this week with
- 22:43Speaker 6: the improvements we need.
- 22:45Speaker 1: All right, Coach, super happy for your success. Good luck
- 22:48Speaker 1: in the upcoming season here. We'll get with your people.
- 22:51Speaker 1: We'll let you know what game we're coming to. I
- 22:53Speaker 1: look forward to standing right next to you on the
- 22:55Speaker 1: sidelines and chirping in your ear, okay?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Absolutely, man. You guys have a hell of a day.
- 23:00Speaker 2: All right, you too, Coach. Thank you so much.
