- 2:43Speaker 1: You guys ever done an interview altogether? No Generation Now Man,
- 2:50Speaker 1: Don Cannon, DJ Drama, the Homielake. Appreciate you guys for
- 2:54Speaker 1: pulling up man, well, I pulled up on y'all. Actually
- 2:56Speaker 1: so appreciate you. Yeah, listen, man, like here, I've been
- 3:00Speaker 1: obviously wanted to talk to John for a long time,
- 3:03Speaker 1: but I think it's so dope to have all three
- 3:04Speaker 1: of you guys here. I heard that this is the
- 3:06Speaker 1: first time you've been in the studio for a long
- 3:08Speaker 1: time since March. Damn you feel very special. Yeah, damn special.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And I had to I had to come out for guests.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I appreciate that, man, I would get goost most of
- 3:21Speaker 1: the time so much. I got so much ship. I
- 3:23Speaker 1: want to like dive in with you guys on because
- 3:25Speaker 1: I know you've been a lot of people don't know
- 3:29Speaker 1: you're kind of the man behind the scenes that people
- 3:31Speaker 1: probably know the least. So kind of break down who
- 3:33Speaker 1: you are, what you do? Damn to start. They know
- 3:38Speaker 1: these guys, these guys are you know, Yeah, no, they
- 3:40Speaker 1: do what they do. I mean, and I like it
- 3:42Speaker 1: that way. I don't even know how to describe it. Man.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I feel like I'm just like the third piece of
- 3:47Speaker 1: the puzzle. You know. It kind of makes the makes
- 3:50Speaker 1: the wheels turned behind the scenes, you know. M hm.
- 3:54Speaker 1: We'd like to describe it as like cannons the music
- 3:57Speaker 1: drums facing on the business. So we'll just put it
- 3:59Speaker 1: that way. So you handle the business to an extent
- 4:03Speaker 1: of your history, break down a little bit. You just
- 4:06Speaker 1: went to a nice, real quick rundown. Started off managing people.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Uh used to work with Freeway, work with the state
- 4:14Speaker 1: property guys for many work with Valentino, worked with Druma,
- 4:19Speaker 1: work with Mace. Actually that's what I started with. Oh
- 4:21Speaker 1: you started with Mace? What years? This is the Welcome
- 4:25Speaker 1: Back era? Okay, okay, So that's the first person. Was
- 4:28Speaker 1: that the Opportunity Waity Welcome So that was was that
- 4:30Speaker 1: the album where he had the Brewers had on the cover.
- 4:33Speaker 1: That is the hat the Brewers had cover. Yeah, so
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know, been around, uh, been working with these guys
- 4:41Speaker 1: ever since. We actually all went to school together. Where
- 4:43Speaker 1: they want to Clark, I want the More House, which
- 4:44Speaker 1: is like right now, right right right, Yeah. And if
- 4:47Speaker 1: I've ever been to a nightclub, the DJ dramas DJ AT,
- 4:50Speaker 1: he's there passing out shots two strange women, nonetheless with
- 4:59Speaker 1: a blunt in his hand. For sure. No, I mean
- 5:01Speaker 1: you guys have obviously, you know, done something special with
- 5:04Speaker 1: Generation now. I feel like, you know, Dram, like you
- 5:09Speaker 1: being who you are and being a DJ, and and
- 5:16Speaker 1: like successfully and we're not just talking about successfully doing
- 5:19Speaker 1: the label shit, Like we're talking about like Uzzi's one
- 5:23Speaker 1: of the biggest fucking artists in the last decade. Jack
- 5:26Speaker 1: Harlowe's superstar right now. So like, not only are you
- 5:29Speaker 1: like doing your thing because you know, with your connections,
- 5:32Speaker 1: you could do your thing with whoever is on your roster,
- 5:34Speaker 1: but to like really really be like a prominent source
- 5:42Speaker 1: of new talent in the music industry, it's just impressive, man, Like,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you guys have built something really special. No, I appreciate that.
- 5:50Speaker 1: It's very rewarding, Like you know, like just to think
- 5:54Speaker 1: about my career and the successes I've had as a DJ,
- 5:58Speaker 1: and you know we've had as a coming up as
- 6:02Speaker 1: the affiliates and and you know, putting things together and
- 6:04Speaker 1: projects and and doing it and just really elevating and
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know, in some senses it feels like reinvention, you know.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And and just even somebody brought it up today, like,
- 6:14Speaker 1: you know, like or I put a tweet up that
- 6:17Speaker 1: I just found on on Twitter and this guy said,
- 6:21Speaker 1: he said, DJ Drama really went from t I to
- 6:24Speaker 1: g Z to Uzzi to Jack Carlow. That's crazy, you know,
- 6:27Speaker 1: And I was like, you know, it was it was
- 6:30Speaker 1: it was like the highest praise for me. How it felt,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you know. I mean, ship dude, I tweeted earlier or
- 6:35Speaker 1: later last year, You're the greatest of all time. Yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 1: I appreciate that. I forgot about that you did. That
- 6:41Speaker 1: was that was an interesting conbo. Yeah, I was watching
- 6:43Speaker 1: that that that versus and I was like, yo, like
- 6:47Speaker 1: Dramas got his hands all over this entire Like like
- 6:50Speaker 1: Atlanta is arguably the most important city in like it's
- 6:54Speaker 1: New York obviously for sure, but like Atlanta is where
- 6:57Speaker 1: everything is, the culture starts and everyone else follows. Atlanta
- 7:02Speaker 1: and it's been like that for fifteen years, I'd say
- 7:05Speaker 1: even maybe twenty maybe twenty, right, I feel like Atlanta's
- 7:08Speaker 1: had the most dominant run in hip hop over and
- 7:12Speaker 1: like I just don't feel like anyone has ever had
- 7:14Speaker 1: more moments and influence and just has been a part
- 7:19Speaker 1: of more history than you. Good looking and by the way,
- 7:22Speaker 1: amazing DJ as well. I appreciate that. Yeah, we try
- 7:27Speaker 1: to cover all grounds, all capacity, and you know, it's
- 7:30Speaker 1: just like it really is because you know, I love
- 7:33Speaker 1: this shit, like I've been doing it for so long,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and you know, just just to I and we try
- 7:40Speaker 1: not to get comfortable on what we've accomplished already. And
- 7:44Speaker 1: then you know, just like being able to navigate and
- 7:48Speaker 1: you know, being a DJ, it's like because we play
- 7:51Speaker 1: music and we've been able to navigate through hip hop
- 7:54Speaker 1: through a lot of times. It's like, you know, that
- 7:56Speaker 1: keeps me on a cusp and keeps me like really
- 7:59Speaker 1: addicted to new shit like at all times, you know
- 8:01Speaker 1: what I'm saying. So so yeah, I mean it's my
- 8:05Speaker 1: my my DJ hat is has been very helpful and
- 8:08Speaker 1: you know, the career as an executive and you know,
- 8:11Speaker 1: finding and you know, helping new talent and you know,
- 8:14Speaker 1: turn it into what we did. And of course you know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: s litt hit records are in your own right, you
- 8:17Speaker 1: know for sure. And then you guys, I'm curious too
- 8:21Speaker 1: because I was when I was just talking with Seddi Hendricks,
- 8:23Speaker 1: And what I appreciate about Generation now is you guys
- 8:26Speaker 1: truly like every artist really is getting it out the mud.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Like it's not like there's not a fucking magic switch
- 8:34Speaker 1: to hit. Like people really think Jack harl is a
- 8:36Speaker 1: new artist, but if you've been tapped in, like he's
- 8:39Speaker 1: been doing his thing with y'all for like three years
- 8:41Speaker 1: and you know, and the same thing with Seddi. Like
- 8:44Speaker 1: I think that like the work is what kind of
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know, I feel like you guys are very conscious
- 8:50Speaker 1: of the work, like and making sure like, hey, look,
- 8:54Speaker 1: it's not as much because you guys could probably sign whoever,
- 8:57Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, But you guys definitely take
- 9:00Speaker 1: the long way, like someone like Jack Harlowe, who this
- 9:05Speaker 1: is not like he had a buzzing single and you
- 9:07Speaker 1: guys grabbed him up and then just you know, through
- 9:11Speaker 1: some gasoline on the fire. You guys built the fucking
- 9:13Speaker 1: fire from the from the jump, So talk about that,
- 9:17Speaker 1: like just your guys is like talent process, Like what
- 9:21Speaker 1: is it you got to see in an artist to
- 9:22Speaker 1: want to bring them over the generation now? And the
- 9:25Speaker 1: same thing to be said about UZI too. By the way,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you see an artist conviction? Uh? Inspired artists? A lot
- 9:33Speaker 1: of artists come to you. They're not inspired, you know
- 9:35Speaker 1: what I mean, they just don't have a vision. Uh,
- 9:38Speaker 1: they just want to wrap and I you know I
- 9:41Speaker 1: personally just you know me and drawn work, and so
- 9:44Speaker 1: long we've known it. You know what we've known when
- 9:46Speaker 1: we've seen people with conviction. The people that used to
- 9:48Speaker 1: be at you know five three two. Glen Iris was
- 9:52Speaker 1: like his house that was the hub for all this,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know what I was at. And we usedtill just
- 9:57Speaker 1: watch so many people, like we watched David Banner to
- 10:00Speaker 1: come in a white van and be like, Yo, I'm
- 10:01Speaker 1: not leaving it so I get against the girls. Or
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know, Paul Wall came down here and we used
- 10:06Speaker 1: to do used to LATEX New York parties and he
- 10:09Speaker 1: used to be like rapping. You know what I'm saying.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Certain people you just they eyes just tell it all
- 10:13Speaker 1: for them, you know. And I think that's what happened.
- 10:16Speaker 1: A lot of artists like Jack came in that was
- 10:18Speaker 1: the eyes, you know, Uzzi even SETI like a lot
- 10:20Speaker 1: of the artists you just know, you know, it's that
- 10:24Speaker 1: feeling like, oh, they're gonna do whatever it takes to
- 10:27Speaker 1: get there, you know what I mean. Yeah, I think
- 10:28Speaker 1: there's they all have that in common. Like that's one
- 10:30Speaker 1: thing I could say about definitely the three of them,
- 10:34Speaker 1: you know, and when it comes to generation now on
- 10:37Speaker 1: the label, when I think about Uzzi, Jack and SETI
- 10:39Speaker 1: like their passion and they're like, I'm I'm gonna get there,
- 10:44Speaker 1: Like all three of them have have that instinctively and
- 10:48Speaker 1: like to a thousandth degree. Yeah, I saw something on Twitter.
- 10:52Speaker 1: It's like you can't want it more than your management
- 10:54Speaker 1: or your label wants. Just then you're wasting everyone's time.
- 10:57Speaker 1: And I feel like a lot of artists like you'll
- 10:59Speaker 1: meet that her fire and you know, sh it just
- 11:03Speaker 1: doesn't work out. And it's and it's really like they're
- 11:06Speaker 1: a lyrics lacking in that they're doing music because they
- 11:08Speaker 1: can not because they like they want to, you know
- 11:10Speaker 1: what I mean. Absolutely, absolutely take me back to seven Man,
- 11:14Speaker 1: because listen, I got a drama. I gotta thank you
- 11:18Speaker 1: and and and you can because I made so much
- 11:22Speaker 1: money selling gangster grill mixed cases from the time I
- 11:25Speaker 1: was sixteen. That's where the name mister Thanksgiving came from,
- 11:29Speaker 1: because I used to go on all the message boards,
- 11:32Speaker 1: download all the tapes, go on mix unit dot com,
- 11:35Speaker 1: steal the artwork fire. I had the fucking printer at
- 11:37Speaker 1: the crib, friend, go to the office, maskt the jewel cases.
- 11:41Speaker 1: That's a good old day. How much how much you
- 11:43Speaker 1: think you made, dude? Every weekend? I was at least
- 11:46Speaker 1: I mean I was like seventeen, man, I got the
- 11:48Speaker 1: Swap Meet. I had my little space at the swap mean,
- 11:50Speaker 1: I was probably making like a rack of weekend. So
- 11:52Speaker 1: that's great. It's five bucks a tape, five for twenty. Yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 1: it was. It was drama. It was you and the
- 11:56Speaker 1: Southern Smoke Ship. It is that ship so small. June
- 12:00Speaker 1: the radio of course as well. But yeah, you know,
- 12:03Speaker 1: the mixtape era was so special and it was like
- 12:07Speaker 1: it was just there was just something about it that
- 12:10Speaker 1: that I don't know if we'll ever get back. But
- 12:14Speaker 1: you know, you obviously your biggest mixtape PJ of all time.
- 12:18Speaker 1: But when you got arrested. I remember buying the I
- 12:21Speaker 1: bought a free drama shirt off of a mixed unit.
- 12:24Speaker 1: First time I ever met you, I was wearing it actually,
- 12:27Speaker 1: So when we met, wasn't it like right after the
- 12:30Speaker 1: It was the same. It was seven, right, I was
- 12:33Speaker 1: a scrub in Phoenix. Yeah, I was. I was working
- 12:34Speaker 1: at the radio. So maybe it was a year. It
- 12:36Speaker 1: might have been my second album, promo run or something.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I don't remember. It's probably six it was. It was no,
- 12:42Speaker 1: it was after, Yeah, it was like right after or
- 12:45Speaker 1: maybe it was like super Bowl was out there or something.
- 12:47Speaker 1: That's what it was. It was the super Bowl because
- 12:49Speaker 1: I remember that. It was like a couple of years,
- 12:51Speaker 1: maybe right after that. But yeah, man, like that moment
- 12:54Speaker 1: when you got you got raided and you got arrested,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you got arrested, You didn't get arrested. Were you around it? Nah?
- 13:01Speaker 1: It was crazy. Though. I was on my way to
- 13:04Speaker 1: the studio. I was in the car with Freeway. We
- 13:06Speaker 1: were actually on our way there. And mind you, we
- 13:07Speaker 1: weren't just like we were. We've been friends since college,
- 13:12Speaker 1: but it's not like we saw Lake every day. So right,
- 13:15Speaker 1: put let's put that in perspective, right, so this is
- 13:17Speaker 1: the day that I was actually about to come over there.
- 13:19Speaker 1: It so happened to be coming over there. Yeah, we're
- 13:21Speaker 1: gonna pull up. I don't know if we were working
- 13:22Speaker 1: on a mixtape or working on something, but we're gonna
- 13:24Speaker 1: stop over there. And uh, I remember Mace was there
- 13:27Speaker 1: the night before. I brought Mace over there. The night
- 13:30Speaker 1: before we had actually took pictures to do a mixtape
- 13:33Speaker 1: that they were Wow that never came out Mace and Drama. Yeah. Yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 1: And uh we drove by and we saw that ship.
- 13:42Speaker 1: We kept going and uh, honestly, we thought it was
- 13:46Speaker 1: happening to the studio that was next door, because it
- 13:49Speaker 1: was a studio literally next door to Drum Studio, And uh,
- 13:52Speaker 1: we thought I was getting ready. We was like, man,
- 13:54Speaker 1: we're just gonna keep it moving, you know. Wow, we
- 13:56Speaker 1: were right and too cool at the time either. Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I feel like that's one of those historical moments. It
- 14:00Speaker 1: kind of changed so much in in in you know,
- 14:04Speaker 1: the hip hop culture, man, and it kind of was
- 14:06Speaker 1: like the the beginning of the end of the mixtape era. Yeah,
- 14:10Speaker 1: of the as how we know it for sure, as
- 14:12Speaker 1: we know it where you could just pull up, I
- 14:14Speaker 1: mean and obviously you know, things were changing. It's interesting
- 14:17Speaker 1: looking back on it because, like you know, everything literally
- 14:20Speaker 1: went digital appt Yeah, after that, it was straight to
- 14:22Speaker 1: the z share link and you had to download, and
- 14:26Speaker 1: then that Pith came along and then I also feel
- 14:28Speaker 1: like after that the change really came and like how
- 14:32Speaker 1: artists were put in mixtapes out because you know, you
- 14:35Speaker 1: got to think about right after that, that's when like
- 14:37Speaker 1: Wiz and Cole and Kendrick and Drake and it was
- 14:42Speaker 1: all original music, but they were still like mixtape forms.
- 14:44Speaker 1: So yeah, they were still technically mixtapes and kind against
- 14:46Speaker 1: their deals. Yeah, like that was like I feel like
- 14:49Speaker 1: what happened with you guys kind of kicked off that
- 14:51Speaker 1: whole era of almost like it was the mixtape era
- 14:54Speaker 1: and then the blog erag the blogs became the new mixtapes. Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 1: so when you get arrested, you get raided, Like, what's
- 15:02Speaker 1: the thought process, man? And did you have any idea
- 15:05Speaker 1: that that could be that that could happen? Nah? I
- 15:07Speaker 1: really didn't. Never in a million years would have thought that.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I mean one, because we were like we felt like
- 15:13Speaker 1: darlings of the industry in a lot of ways, like
- 15:15Speaker 1: we were hot, like I was on fire, you know
- 15:18Speaker 1: what I'm saying, And like, you know, we were also
- 15:23Speaker 1: in bed with so so much of the music industry
- 15:26Speaker 1: with all the labels, not only for me in DJs,
- 15:28Speaker 1: but then you know from labels were paying for gangster
- 15:32Speaker 1: grills and you know, I had an album deal at
- 15:34Speaker 1: Atlantic at the time. So when it all went down,
- 15:38Speaker 1: it was like, yeah, our minds were blown, like I
- 15:41Speaker 1: in a million years. Never like we said, I thought
- 15:42Speaker 1: they were coming for the studio next door on some shit.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I didn't think they was coming to get me. And
- 15:47Speaker 1: even when it we first like went through the motions,
- 15:50Speaker 1: I didn't comprehend it, you know. And it's so weird
- 15:53Speaker 1: because there's so many like different theories or or reasons
- 15:59Speaker 1: how and why it happened, you know what I mean.
- 16:00Speaker 1: But it regardless, it changed the whole game, and like
- 16:04Speaker 1: it literally changed the game overnight, you know what I'm saying.
- 16:06Speaker 1: And the mixtape game was totally different after that, and
- 16:10Speaker 1: you know it, you know, it was the top of
- 16:12Speaker 1: the food change. So a lot of niggas was doing
- 16:14Speaker 1: what we were doing with like yo, if they go
- 16:16Speaker 1: get drama and them, like I remember, they got like
- 16:18Speaker 1: big Mike and they got they got some yeah, but
- 16:22Speaker 1: not like that, no one. I don't feel like anyone's situation.
- 16:25Speaker 1: They made an example of you guys because yeah, like
- 16:28Speaker 1: it was just it was crazy. So but I mean,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and you know, it also made us more famous than ever,
- 16:35Speaker 1: you know, so it was like it's it kind of
- 16:38Speaker 1: set up for the first Gangster Girls album and yeah,
- 16:42Speaker 1: so I mean, you know, looking back on and it's like,
- 16:44Speaker 1: who knows how shit would have played out in our
- 16:47Speaker 1: careers if that may not have happened. But but you know,
- 16:51Speaker 1: another part of it too, was like I felt a
- 16:54Speaker 1: lot of guilt at first when that shit happened because
- 16:56Speaker 1: I felt like, damn this ship, like this here's a
- 16:58Speaker 1: culture that I like grew up up like loving and
- 17:01Speaker 1: like you know, you're the guy reason why Yeah, I'm like, damn,
- 17:03Speaker 1: this shit's gonna die on my shoulders. Like I felt
- 17:06Speaker 1: terrible for for a minute, you know what I'm saying.
- 17:08Speaker 1: So I remember even when I like first did Against
- 17:10Speaker 1: Grills or like when I did the tape when me
- 17:12Speaker 1: and Wayne did Dedication three, it was like I can't
- 17:15Speaker 1: let this ship down on you know, on my dime.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Like you know, I'm letting all the guys who came
- 17:19Speaker 1: before me down so to see where quote unquote mixtapes
- 17:22Speaker 1: are now today or just even because I feel like
- 17:25Speaker 1: they really it was a phoenix that arose from now,
- 17:27Speaker 1: Like if you look at it now, in whatever form,
- 17:30Speaker 1: mixtapes are bigger business than they ever were, you know
- 17:32Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Yeah, now they're they're monit. They're fully
- 17:35Speaker 1: monitored artist favorite. You feel what I'm saying. So you know,
- 17:39Speaker 1: I do miss like the energy of like you know,
- 17:41Speaker 1: it was re mixes in the freestyles and ship yeah,
- 17:45Speaker 1: and and it was it was just different. And now
- 17:47Speaker 1: it's like even when people drop mixtapes to a certain degree,
- 17:51Speaker 1: unless you get all your your everything cleared, like it's just,
- 17:56Speaker 1: you know, with all due respect to the mixtape sites,
- 17:58Speaker 1: is everyone wants to on all the DSPs. Like I
- 18:01Speaker 1: don't even I still haven't even like tapped in with
- 18:04Speaker 1: the Wayne tape because I'm just I'm not downloading. I'm like,
- 18:08Speaker 1: you know, like because it's not on the DSP. I
- 18:10Speaker 1: wanted to be. And at a time when we were
- 18:12Speaker 1: doing it, it it was like everyone there would there were
- 18:16Speaker 1: no DSPs, so it was like you everyone had to
- 18:18Speaker 1: have whatever gangster grills. Yeah, so back then, right, give
- 18:21Speaker 1: me the process, So you do a gangst the grills.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And for people who don't kind of understand like how
- 18:26Speaker 1: tapes circulated back then and kind of what you got,
- 18:29Speaker 1: like you were actually like were you wholesaling tapes out
- 18:32Speaker 1: from your headquarters? Yep? Yeah, was whole selling them out
- 18:35Speaker 1: from the headquarters. And then we was we had a
- 18:37Speaker 1: whole system shot a man Jason Brown. We would uh
- 18:42Speaker 1: wholesale them out from the studio. Then you know, also
- 18:46Speaker 1: the mixtape sites would do what they do, and then
- 18:48Speaker 1: who knows what the bootleggers was doing, so they you know,
- 18:51Speaker 1: from canals, so like a mixed unit was like a
- 18:53Speaker 1: big site, right, would stuff straight from you? Yeah? They would,
- 18:59Speaker 1: uh huh yep yeah, because I always wondered, like it's
- 19:04Speaker 1: you know, the whole idea of a mixtape is kind
- 19:05Speaker 1: of bootleg anyway, right, but then you would kind of
- 19:08Speaker 1: know when you'd get like the official joint because it'd
- 19:10Speaker 1: have like the back black riding on it and on
- 19:12Speaker 1: the CD. Right yeah, or how you kind of know
- 19:15Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, right, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, right,
- 19:19Speaker 1: yeah for sure. So you guys, would you guys just
- 19:21Speaker 1: kind of had your own little distribution system. We was
- 19:24Speaker 1: we was killing shit. That crazy crazy. It was like
- 19:28Speaker 1: what was your like a like a wholesale Like if
- 19:30Speaker 1: if if somebody like what were you selling your tapes
- 19:33Speaker 1: were hold like it was light like two dollars. It
- 19:36Speaker 1: would vary from like two dollars to four dollars depending
- 19:40Speaker 1: on where you know, where the market was. That's crazy. Yeah,
- 19:43Speaker 1: and yeah, I mean that's shit. I know how cheap
- 19:45Speaker 1: it is, especially you know you guys probably had twenty
- 19:47Speaker 1: five CD burners going. Yeah, and it'll probably costs us
- 19:50Speaker 1: like thirty cents of CD or something like that. Trying
- 19:53Speaker 1: to think of the costs. Man used to go in
- 19:55Speaker 1: that back room in terms of be back there putting
- 19:58Speaker 1: the CDs together like New Jackson bro just like Wag
- 20:01Speaker 1: and enjoyed something many boxes Field oh Man used to
- 20:05Speaker 1: be able to go back there. I remember I used
- 20:07Speaker 1: to go back there whenever I needed all of it.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I just go back there and get the twenty five
- 20:10Speaker 1: hottest new mixtapes because he was doing they was doing
- 20:13Speaker 1: one every other week between them three between him since
- 20:15Speaker 1: and Cannon. Yeah, there was one coming out every week.
- 20:18Speaker 1: So you go over there you got applies tape and
- 20:20Speaker 1: every genre from you know, you got a Joe Budden mixtape,
- 20:23Speaker 1: you got Killing Mike. Would you? Would you guys wholesale
- 20:27Speaker 1: other people's tapes for them? No, only affiliate. We only
- 20:30Speaker 1: did a Interestingly enough, I don't know if you know this,
- 20:34Speaker 1: but so back in the day, we wound up meeting
- 20:41Speaker 1: Kanye very early on and we wound up getting some
- 20:44Speaker 1: drops from him. He was on tour with Quality at
- 20:47Speaker 1: the time. And we also my man Damien Lemmon used
- 20:50Speaker 1: to work at Vibe magazine, so he had his He
- 20:53Speaker 1: had Kanye's college drop out super early, super super early.
- 20:58Speaker 1: So we had a copy of the album and and
- 21:00Speaker 1: Joe Button was on It was on his promo runs
- 21:04Speaker 1: when Pumping Up first came out and we had we
- 21:06Speaker 1: had we got Joe Button to host the tape. So
- 21:08Speaker 1: at the time and Cannon was like, uh, Kanye and
- 21:12Speaker 1: Joe Button didn't really feel gangster grills. At the time,
- 21:16Speaker 1: it was like we need another we need another mixtape series,
- 21:18Speaker 1: like what should we call it? We called a Generation
- 21:21Speaker 1: now Wow. Actually I remember burning those CDs and it
- 21:25Speaker 1: was like almost like a tape that had just a
- 21:27Speaker 1: bunch of new ship on it generation now yeah, I
- 21:30Speaker 1: used to burn those. Yeah, that was our side tape.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Something didn't fit and like I had all y'all's names
- 21:35Speaker 1: on it, right, Yeah, I remember those. So that's how long.
- 21:39Speaker 1: That's how long we've had the name. Damn. Yeah. So Cannon,
- 21:42Speaker 1: talk about how you and Drama initially linked up, like
- 21:46Speaker 1: your guys's history. We linked up in college. A good
- 21:49Speaker 1: story because I went to I used to kick it
- 21:53Speaker 1: with my man Harris, right, and Jabbar is one of
- 21:56Speaker 1: my closest people in Philly. He wasn't coming to Atlanta
- 21:59Speaker 1: the school and I was. He was like, yo, when
- 22:01Speaker 1: you get down there as a kid named Drum, he's dope.
- 22:05Speaker 1: You need to get with him. He's already with the
- 22:07Speaker 1: roots and and and bahamadd and just working with Ohama
- 22:13Speaker 1: did and uh. He was like you make beats, y'all
- 22:16Speaker 1: should hook up. And my whole thought process like he
- 22:18Speaker 1: next to the roots, about to get course some beats,
- 22:21Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So I came to school.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I met him on the pan one time and I
- 22:25Speaker 1: and I gave him some beats and I think he
- 22:27Speaker 1: took it home and he came back was like, yo,
- 22:29Speaker 1: he beats hard. You need to come by the crib,
- 22:31Speaker 1: you know and work on some ship. And we just
- 22:34Speaker 1: we went to the crib and worked on some stuff.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I think he was, you know, rest in peace to
- 22:38Speaker 1: Jackson and them guys. Beats benk his records, but he
- 22:43Speaker 1: was just like flooding my beats to people, you know
- 22:45Speaker 1: what I mean. He was like actually he was the former.
- 22:48Speaker 1: He was my managers that I remember, like, you know
- 22:50Speaker 1: what I mean. And at that time he was making beats.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Also if you could find that thirty two beat CD,
- 22:55Speaker 1: that's a classic, if you find his thirty two BCD.
- 22:58Speaker 1: But uh yeah, he was making beats. I was making
- 23:01Speaker 1: beats and we were just we was just kicking ship. Man.
- 23:04Speaker 1: It was times where I actually got kicked out of school,
- 23:07Speaker 1: right and I ain't tell my mom she knows now,
- 23:10Speaker 1: but I got I got kicked out of school and
- 23:12Speaker 1: I ain't had no place to live, and he kind
- 23:13Speaker 1: of took me in like you know for a little bit,
- 23:15Speaker 1: and I would go back and forth between him and
- 23:18Speaker 1: Trent Setter had a duplex, and I would go back
- 23:20Speaker 1: and forth to the crib if I got on his
- 23:21Speaker 1: nerves vice versa. So until I got my you know,
- 23:25Speaker 1: my stuff together. So you know, we was we went
- 23:28Speaker 1: to the club, he was DJing clubs. I started going
- 23:30Speaker 1: to club with him and you know, taking the craids
- 23:32Speaker 1: and just filling in doing different things. And also, uh
- 23:36Speaker 1: you know when we was making the mixtapes, we just
- 23:38Speaker 1: was you know, putting the stuff together at the crib.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I got you know, it was just his
- 23:43Speaker 1: His crib was the hub. I keep saying, uh five
- 23:46Speaker 1: through to Glen Iris, like that was the hub. It
- 23:48Speaker 1: was just the shack where you know, he had a
- 23:50Speaker 1: nice little room. Any and everybody was in there. T
- 23:53Speaker 1: I was wrapping in the bathroom. Scrappy came by, a
- 23:56Speaker 1: little John came by, anybody. You think of two chains, Monica,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Wow, It just was in
- 24:03Speaker 1: this crib and it was just the place to be,
- 24:05Speaker 1: so I wouldn't want to be nowhere else. He had
- 24:07Speaker 1: the records. He had like a whole wall of records.
- 24:10Speaker 1: You know, I was sampled dusty little crib too. Yeah.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It was the best everything. No, it's not even like
- 24:15Speaker 1: a nice condo or nothing like. It's Dusty was in
- 24:18Speaker 1: the hood. It was in the food. You know, good
- 24:22Speaker 1: go to music until it's time and you know, disperse
- 24:24Speaker 1: and you know, play our role with those you know
- 24:28Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Yeah, so you obviously started as a producer.
- 24:33Speaker 1: You're I always say this, You're like one of the
- 24:35Speaker 1: most fire producers. Thank you, bro, appreciate it. Yeah, did
- 24:40Speaker 1: like Drom convince you to start doing the mixtape thing
- 24:43Speaker 1: as well or was that something that just kind of
- 24:45Speaker 1: naturally happened. I actually I started DJing when I was
- 24:48Speaker 1: five years old. Okay, so you were you are already
- 24:51Speaker 1: djaying as well. Yeah, So I grew up wanting to
- 24:52Speaker 1: be shot, you know what I mean. When I was eleven,
- 24:54Speaker 1: I wanted to be in the NBA and make beats.
- 24:56Speaker 1: While was a rapper first, and then I was making
- 24:58Speaker 1: beats Shock, Better Point Garden, Chris Ball, no doubt, no doubt. Yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 1: But uh and then and in high school how I
- 25:07Speaker 1: used to make my money. I was making mixtapes. My
- 25:09Speaker 1: first DJ name was the Last Don and I used
- 25:12Speaker 1: to just you know, make I think they leaked The
- 25:15Speaker 1: Iron Man and ghost Face early, and I was like
- 25:19Speaker 1: the first person to put on my mixtapes. So I
- 25:20Speaker 1: had that some underground dudes like elder Head Toucher and
- 25:24Speaker 1: all that stuff, and I used to put them on
- 25:25Speaker 1: tapes and I used to just move them through the
- 25:28Speaker 1: high school because that's how I made money. I was
- 25:29Speaker 1: the hustle in high school. So even if people owe
- 25:32Speaker 1: me money, I would just get like, you know, they
- 25:34Speaker 1: would bring their khakis. I sell the khakis to somebody.
- 25:37Speaker 1: There's shoes. But the tapes was the main thing. But
- 25:39Speaker 1: then when I got to Atlanta, I was like, Yo,
- 25:42Speaker 1: I need to get on some producing, you know what
- 25:44Speaker 1: I mean. But DJing came so wild because I was
- 25:46Speaker 1: DJ on campus. A couple of guys saw me and
- 25:49Speaker 1: was like, Yo, you need to come do Chili Pepper
- 25:50Speaker 1: and all these clubs. And when I did those clubs,
- 25:53Speaker 1: they was like, Yo, you're dope as hell. DJ and
- 25:55Speaker 1: I just got gigs. So it just started falling place.
- 25:58Speaker 1: But we started started rocking together, and it was like
- 26:01Speaker 1: it was sometimes where DRAWN was getting so hot on
- 26:03Speaker 1: the mixtape game that I was doing a lot of
- 26:06Speaker 1: the gigs, you know what I'm saying. He was just
- 26:08Speaker 1: so hot At a point I think he was like
- 26:10Speaker 1: I didn't even wanna fuck with the clubs like that
- 26:12Speaker 1: no more. I'm just you know, I'm over here, and
- 26:14Speaker 1: I just did a lot of the gigs. You know
- 26:16Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Could somebody was doing tapes and I
- 26:19Speaker 1: was on tapes too, like in the earlier years, like
- 26:21Speaker 1: and I'm don't even talk about like I'm talking about
- 26:23Speaker 1: even when he was in college, because I used to.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I used to set up on campus. Cana did the
- 26:28Speaker 1: tape called the After Party. I remember, Yeah, that was
- 26:32Speaker 1: my college, you know what I mean. So I used
- 26:35Speaker 1: to like, hustle, our tapes are myself and they are him,
- 26:39Speaker 1: And Trance said that I give them credit for me
- 26:41Speaker 1: using my real name. My whole life, I ain't even
- 26:43Speaker 1: like my name, you know what I'm saying. So they
- 26:45Speaker 1: was like yo, can and like, oh my god, it's
- 26:47Speaker 1: just whack. You know, it turned out, you know what
- 26:51Speaker 1: I'm saying, But I didn't like it for a long time.
- 26:53Speaker 1: But you know, I credit them for doing that. You know,
- 26:55Speaker 1: in Philly for some time now, Cannon has been like
- 26:57Speaker 1: a a name people. What's up Cannon. But even before
- 27:01Speaker 1: we was telling before that happened, we was telling him
- 27:04Speaker 1: they would never call me by my name. They was like, Cannon,
- 27:06Speaker 1: it wouldn't be like Donnie Brasco, this is like what
- 27:10Speaker 1: fire name like he do you remember the like the
- 27:14Speaker 1: beat that like kind of changed your uh like kind
- 27:18Speaker 1: of changed my life as a producer. Man crazy, Yeah,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I could say, I could say go crazy, But the
- 27:25Speaker 1: one that I get the most accolades from the most
- 27:30Speaker 1: people I would never thought i'd ever speak to it
- 27:32Speaker 1: was Cannon Wayne. Yeah, And that was the reason why.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Is like I went to when I started traveling, bro,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I was running into everybody like Premiere and all these people,
- 27:41Speaker 1: and it was like, Yo, I need to holler at you.
- 27:43Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, like when you made when
- 27:45Speaker 1: you made that beat right, like was your like drop
- 27:51Speaker 1: like like like did you make that beat like or
- 27:53Speaker 1: did you add that later? Like what was the process
- 27:56Speaker 1: of that record with Wayne? I'm gonna tell your story.
- 27:58Speaker 1: So so this is I came about when I when
- 28:02Speaker 1: I did go crazy. H N R. From Atlantic I
- 28:06Speaker 1: forgot his name at the time, but he was like, Yo,
- 28:08Speaker 1: I want you to go work with Trick Daddy in Florida.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Now Orlando did it? It was this guy you forget
- 28:16Speaker 1: his name, but uh. I went to Miami and I
- 28:19Speaker 1: went to Circle House and I was busting my brain
- 28:22Speaker 1: or what I can make Trick Daddy that feel like
- 28:24Speaker 1: me and Miami at the same time. So at that time,
- 28:28Speaker 1: it was like, come on ride this train. It was like,
- 28:30Speaker 1: you know, a Southern base record. And I was like, yeah,
- 28:34Speaker 1: I'm a East Coast to ship out, and how I
- 28:37Speaker 1: wind up flipping it? Trick Daddy ain't really like it.
- 28:41Speaker 1: You know, he was working on a Madonna record at
- 28:43Speaker 1: the time. What the fu. Yeah, it was like Trick
- 28:45Speaker 1: Daddy was going to strip club every day from like
- 28:47Speaker 1: eleven in the morning to like six and alfternoon. It
- 28:51Speaker 1: was I think if Madonna was on a hook or something.
- 28:53Speaker 1: It was something that's some huge ship. I think. No,
- 28:58Speaker 1: Trick was crazy. So my whole thing was like I
- 29:00Speaker 1: love Trick as a rapper. I was like, damn, I
- 29:02Speaker 1: just wish he could come in the room and be like, Yo,
- 29:05Speaker 1: I don't like this, but I like that. But it
- 29:07Speaker 1: just ain't work out that way. But I wind up
- 29:08Speaker 1: leaven the stuff there. But it was a dude fiend
- 29:11Speaker 1: that was there. I don't know if you know Fiend. Yes,
- 29:14Speaker 1: Fien was right today. Yeah, he was. He's a phenomenal writer.
- 29:18Speaker 1: So he was like coming in the session and loving
- 29:20Speaker 1: everything I was fucking with. He was like, bro, I
- 29:22Speaker 1: love that he was the first person to do a
- 29:25Speaker 1: cannon hook. He went on there and was like, I
- 29:27Speaker 1: got the a K. I'm with the cannon and that
- 29:30Speaker 1: was it. You didn't know that he was the first
- 29:33Speaker 1: person that used the drop. It didn't go all the
- 29:35Speaker 1: way through like everybody, but he was like, yo, I
- 29:36Speaker 1: got it a K with a cannon and I was like, oh,
- 29:39Speaker 1: that's fire. But it never amounted to nothing, so I
- 29:42Speaker 1: wind up taking a record back home. I think I
- 29:45Speaker 1: gave it to him first. Now, yeah, you gave it
- 29:48Speaker 1: the Buster, No, remember, because Orlando gave it to Bohagen.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Bohagen had it first. Yeah, he remember Behagen, and then
- 29:56Speaker 1: after that it was Buster and then Busting to Bust.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I don't think bo Haagen did cannon though. I think
- 30:03Speaker 1: he wrapped on it, but he didn't do the layout.
- 30:05Speaker 1: He might not. He didn't beat. Yeah, Busted did the layout. Yeah,
- 30:09Speaker 1: Busted did it. Bust had it first. Yeah, he went dumb.
- 30:12Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Yeah, because there was different
- 30:13Speaker 1: iterations of that record. I remember he went dumb and
- 30:16Speaker 1: then he wound up giving it Dwayne and then Wayne
- 30:19Speaker 1: just went stupid. The craziest thing is people don't know
- 30:22Speaker 1: is Wayne wrapped the whole beat three minutes long. We
- 30:25Speaker 1: had to make the verses because he just wouldn't stop.
- 30:28Speaker 1: He just he just is in the in the in
- 30:30Speaker 1: the booth. He wrapped the whole thing straight. I still
- 30:32Speaker 1: got that version too. Yeah. So I was going to Miami.
- 30:37Speaker 1: It was when Cali was shooting Holler at Me and
- 30:40Speaker 1: everybody went to Miami for that video and we were
- 30:43Speaker 1: just that dedication. I was going to go to Circle
- 30:46Speaker 1: House to go pick up dedicated. That's crazy because that's
- 30:48Speaker 1: where the beat was made too. But I was going
- 30:50Speaker 1: to Circle House to go pick up the music for
- 30:52Speaker 1: Dedication too, and uh, it was that same night. And
- 30:57Speaker 1: then I went over there and I was like, yo,
- 30:59Speaker 1: I got this just beat. My man made, like to
- 31:01Speaker 1: see if you funk with it for the tape and
- 31:02Speaker 1: I was the last song he did for dedication to
- 31:04Speaker 1: and Spaz and like the next day gave it back
- 31:07Speaker 1: to me. Yeah. That was That was the whole making
- 31:10Speaker 1: of that. And people don't really know that story, but
- 31:12Speaker 1: I try to tell that story because that was like
- 31:15Speaker 1: a magical mistake. You know. When I was making that record,
- 31:17Speaker 1: it was like, oh, go crazy. Was the same way
- 31:20Speaker 1: when I made it, go crazy. It was for artists.
- 31:23Speaker 1: We had named Willy the kid. The kid Yeah, shot
- 31:26Speaker 1: to Willy, Shot to Willie, And I think I was
- 31:28Speaker 1: making it watching Dead Presidence first artist, Yeah yeah, And
- 31:33Speaker 1: I wind up giving it to him and t I
- 31:36Speaker 1: wrapped on it, but he didn't. I wind up giving
- 31:39Speaker 1: Willy another beat because we couldn't get it right. Something happened.
- 31:42Speaker 1: We couldn't get that record right for him, so I
- 31:44Speaker 1: gave him another beat and then that went to draw
- 31:46Speaker 1: you know, and that's yeah, go crazy is one of
- 31:49Speaker 1: those ones. Man, It's like, how crazy was it when
- 31:54Speaker 1: you heard jay Z's remake was about to say his
- 31:55Speaker 1: first beat out the gate? It was crazy because I
- 32:00Speaker 1: remember Coach K like, yo, got something for you, got
- 32:04Speaker 1: something for you. I'm like, man, whatever whatever you're talking about.
- 32:07Speaker 1: I thought I didn't know what it was going after.
- 32:09Speaker 1: It was gonna be like a g Z and a
- 32:11Speaker 1: couple of people that you know, and and uh when
- 32:14Speaker 1: he said jay Z, I said, I wait to hear
- 32:16Speaker 1: it when I believe it. And to this day, I
- 32:18Speaker 1: think jay Z performed it at birthday birthday bad Ford
- 32:24Speaker 1: in the come and I had I wouldn't come, but
- 32:26Speaker 1: I came. I had a loaf of bread in my throat.
- 32:29Speaker 1: When I heard I seen all them people, I said, oh, ship,
- 32:31Speaker 1: it's real man, you know what I mean? Because I
- 32:33Speaker 1: didn't know what I was doing at the time. We
- 32:35Speaker 1: was just was having fun. Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 32:37Speaker 1: It was just everything we did was fun, you know
- 32:39Speaker 1: what I mean. Damn, that's crazy man. Yeah. That record
- 32:42Speaker 1: is like one of those ones. Is like I remember,
- 32:45Speaker 1: like first time I pressed played on that CD. That
- 32:48Speaker 1: was the one record because I'm like like a boombab
- 32:51Speaker 1: hip hop ad and that record was like it was
- 32:53Speaker 1: like hearing GZ in a different light, you know. Yeah.
- 32:55Speaker 1: That was one thing that I did strategize. I was like, yo,
- 32:58Speaker 1: because go crazy. Original had break be drums on it,
- 33:01Speaker 1: and I was like, how can I get this sound
- 33:04Speaker 1: and him together to make it that? And I always
- 33:06Speaker 1: wanted to sit in front of like him and Jay
- 33:09Speaker 1: in the conversations like Yo, what did you hear? Jeez?
- 33:11Speaker 1: Do that made you want to do sixty four bars
- 33:15Speaker 1: of classic verse? Because I you know, Jay does a verse,
- 33:19Speaker 1: he does some special verses, but that one just long.
- 33:22Speaker 1: It was different, you know what I'm saying. I was
- 33:24Speaker 1: just trying to figure out, like what did jeez, say
- 33:26Speaker 1: on there that made you like, oh man, I gotta
- 33:28Speaker 1: go crazy, like you know what I'm saying. So I
- 33:31Speaker 1: just I just you know, going through that whole prop
- 33:34Speaker 1: that that whole process was was fun because we were
- 33:38Speaker 1: just doing us. I don't think we I mean, we
- 33:41Speaker 1: had objective to make money, but I think at that
- 33:43Speaker 1: time I was just happy to be a part of sacks.
- 33:46Speaker 1: You know what I mean? For sure? Back then, like
- 33:50Speaker 1: when the Gangster Girls the hottest shit, right, could a
- 33:53Speaker 1: label pay you to do it? Like like let's say
- 33:55Speaker 1: it was an artist that was you didn't know about,
- 33:58Speaker 1: could they cut the stimulus check? And he did plenty
- 34:03Speaker 1: of times? What got a thing too at the time.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I mean it may be a little different now, but
- 34:09Speaker 1: even there are artists like Yogatis an example of that,
- 34:13Speaker 1: Like the first tape we did together, he paid me
- 34:15Speaker 1: and he was he had just got signed. So these
- 34:16Speaker 1: are still artists that are like you know, we know
- 34:19Speaker 1: of today. You know what I'm saying that the labels
- 34:21Speaker 1: were still cutting checks for so it would it would
- 34:24Speaker 1: it would vary, like they would come from all avenues.
- 34:26Speaker 1: What was you about to est though? I was gonna say,
- 34:28Speaker 1: what what was the biggest, Like what's the like, what
- 34:30Speaker 1: was the going rate? It got up to? Like twenty
- 34:36Speaker 1: five thirty thousand? Damn, Like I take you that's crazy.
- 34:41Speaker 1: And then like so give me like so like so
- 34:44Speaker 1: something like the Little Brother Gangster Grills, right, which was
- 34:46Speaker 1: so dope because Little Brothers obviously from the South, right,
- 34:49Speaker 1: but they kind of you know, it's crazy because back then,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I feel like we really separated types of hip hop
- 34:59Speaker 1: so much more than we now. They told me it
- 35:01Speaker 1: wasn't gonna make sense when I did that. Like now,
- 35:03Speaker 1: like people can work with each other and people don't
- 35:06Speaker 1: even bat an eye at it. Back then, I like remember,
- 35:08Speaker 1: like how how crazy it was like when you heard
- 35:11Speaker 1: Talip Quality and jay Z on a song together. Absolutely,
- 35:14Speaker 1: and so you do there's a lot of that. Yeah,
- 35:16Speaker 1: Kanye had a lot to do, but you doing the
- 35:18Speaker 1: Gangster Girls a Little Brother? Was that your idea? Was
- 35:20Speaker 1: that the label coming in? No, that had nothing? That
- 35:23Speaker 1: was me and Little Brother. I mean I was I
- 35:24Speaker 1: have been a fan, Like I'm we're hip hop heads too,
- 35:27Speaker 1: so you know what I'm saying. I've been a Little
- 35:29Speaker 1: Brother fan. And when I remember we wound up, we
- 35:32Speaker 1: ran into each other. They had to show a Yan
- 35:34Speaker 1: Yant cafe here in Atlanta, and I went to go
- 35:36Speaker 1: see him and we talked about it on the bus.
- 35:38Speaker 1: And it's looking back on it, like again, little Brother
- 35:42Speaker 1: tape and the Pharrell tape. Like when I did those
- 35:45Speaker 1: tape crazy like though at the time, Gangster Girls was
- 35:48Speaker 1: still known for like t I g Z Wayne Bumbee,
- 35:52Speaker 1: So it was it had a certain you know style
- 35:55Speaker 1: to it or it was like street music, you know
- 35:57Speaker 1: what I'm saying. So I remember people being like, you
- 36:00Speaker 1: gonna do it Gangsters with who Little Brother Pharrell? And
- 36:03Speaker 1: I was like watch this and you know, like even
- 36:06Speaker 1: for me, like that was getting back to my roots
- 36:08Speaker 1: to be able to do something with them, you know
- 36:09Speaker 1: what I'm saying. So they they you know, them being
- 36:12Speaker 1: a fan and me being a fan. It was like
- 36:13Speaker 1: it was it was perfect. Like I was so excited
- 36:17Speaker 1: to do those tapes too, to really just start branching
- 36:19Speaker 1: out and going different directions too with the brand. Yeah,
- 36:22Speaker 1: and then like how many Like so okay, like you
- 36:24Speaker 1: mentioned the Pharrell tape, which is fucking so fine. Cannon
- 36:28Speaker 1: actually goes DJ that hotel. Oh you did, okay, Okay,
- 36:32Speaker 1: But I'm just curious he was on the road. Questionable
- 36:36Speaker 1: question questionable. You and Pharrell, like you decided to do
- 36:42Speaker 1: against the Grills. Does he just handle all the creative
- 36:44Speaker 1: or are you sending him ideas beats? It was both
- 36:47Speaker 1: was sending him ideas and beats and he was he
- 36:51Speaker 1: had a phenomenal uh uh outline of where he wanted
- 36:55Speaker 1: to go with it. He definitely picked some incredible beats
- 36:57Speaker 1: and we gave him some. And you know, and I
- 37:00Speaker 1: what I used to do is I used to write
- 37:01Speaker 1: out a script. I used to have a script and
- 37:04Speaker 1: it basically was like literally like me interviewing the artists
- 37:07Speaker 1: and that would kind of give me a formula for
- 37:09Speaker 1: the tape. So you know, that's when I used to
- 37:11Speaker 1: do interludes and talk and chop it up, you know,
- 37:14Speaker 1: just kind of piece and those stuff that stuff together.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Like so so yeah, I mean and again, you know
- 37:19Speaker 1: I met I met Pharrell when Tip was on house arrest,
- 37:24Speaker 1: like before we did Down with the King, so we
- 37:28Speaker 1: had we had got acquainted then, you know, so he
- 37:30Speaker 1: was familiar with me early on in my like in
- 37:33Speaker 1: that part of my career. So then you know he
- 37:36Speaker 1: kind of touched back and was like, Yo, I love
- 37:38Speaker 1: what you're doing like we gotta do on. I mean,
- 37:40Speaker 1: to this day, it's the only mixtape he's ever done.
- 37:42Speaker 1: You know, it's just you know, us being fan like
- 37:44Speaker 1: it was monumental like and no, that's that's the tape too.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Like you know, I meet a lot of kids today,
- 37:50Speaker 1: not even kids anymore, but you know they'll be like, yo,
- 37:52Speaker 1: that pharreal gang like the same way like the Gzy
- 37:56Speaker 1: and a Wayne tape is to to some That's how
- 37:59Speaker 1: you know a different cloth is to the to the
- 38:03Speaker 1: Ferral tape per se, you know what I'm saying. So yeah,
- 38:05Speaker 1: all classics. We got nothing but fucking classics under our
- 38:10Speaker 1: your shit talk that shitat No, we're breaking down this video.

- 39:26Speaker 1: did you realize or like you guys as a crew
- 39:29Speaker 1: like that Gangster Grills was like the brand, like well
- 39:36Speaker 1: I know that like the early tapes, but like what
- 39:38Speaker 1: was the one like like the one that like like
- 39:40Speaker 1: do you remember that moment where you're like with levels?
- 39:43Speaker 1: It was, I mean, yeah, it with levels, because shit,
- 39:49Speaker 1: I think about like Gangster Grill six. We had like
- 39:53Speaker 1: Bone Crusher David Benner and Killer Mike Houston. It was
- 39:57Speaker 1: like we wound up seeing nothing, but like when fifty
- 40:01Speaker 1: when Give Richard I Trying came out, we wound up
- 40:03Speaker 1: finding this like bootleg spot in the Tuck in the
- 40:06Speaker 1: West End, and we literally saw like give rich of
- 40:10Speaker 1: I Tryan's walls full and then Gangster Grill six walls full.
- 40:13Speaker 1: So it's almost like flattering one hundred percent, like it
- 40:16Speaker 1: was the most flattering thing ever. I was ecstatic. So
- 40:20Speaker 1: then there was that level. Then there was like the
- 40:23Speaker 1: t I down with No The t I meets Gangster
- 40:26Speaker 1: Girls Uh in the Streets was literally the first tape
- 40:31Speaker 1: that was just one artist. You know. Before that it
- 40:33Speaker 1: was just like compilations. It was a mixtape. Sudden, it
- 40:35Speaker 1: was that level that we knew, Okay, it's something I remember,
- 40:38Speaker 1: you know them even tell I remember we went to
- 40:40Speaker 1: like mix Sure Power Shummitt that year, and I was
- 40:43Speaker 1: thinking about taking more of my neo soul tape than
- 40:46Speaker 1: I was the tip tape and Sense and kind of
- 40:50Speaker 1: like nigg you bugging, like the fuck are you talking about?
- 40:54Speaker 1: That's just how hype. I was just on the automatic
- 40:56Speaker 1: like a whole another series I had, but right right
- 40:59Speaker 1: right right then, and there was I can't even imagine
- 41:01Speaker 1: you like talking your ship over automatic relaxation. That's what that.
- 41:06Speaker 1: There's some trivia. What was the first Gangster Girls not
- 41:09Speaker 1: the first Gangster Girls tape? What was the first name?
- 41:14Speaker 1: How was it? Jim Crowbos that was one? And then
- 41:17Speaker 1: how the South was one? So the South was one?
- 41:20Speaker 1: That was That's when we knew it was like, oh, okay,
- 41:24Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying from the college day, yeah,
- 41:26Speaker 1: because it was moving like that was our first South tape.
- 41:29Speaker 1: And then obviously the Tip Down with the King that
- 41:34Speaker 1: was that was a big tape that started garding some
- 41:36Speaker 1: more attention. That was you couldn't go nowhere, especially in
- 41:39Speaker 1: Atlanta night. That the one that Jack and for Beats
- 41:41Speaker 1: on it. Yeah, that was one I had Jack and
- 41:43Speaker 1: for Beats on it. Jack and the Beats. That's that's
- 41:45Speaker 1: still my favorite. That's like peak t I m cing
- 41:48Speaker 1: right there. It was going crazy. And then g Z
- 41:54Speaker 1: what's the first streets is watching the first GEZ tape
- 41:58Speaker 1: and that was like, you know, g Z before Jez
- 42:02Speaker 1: was Jeezy, Gangster Girls was Gangster Grills. So you know
- 42:05Speaker 1: it was that tape was like the first of its
- 42:07Speaker 1: kind where it was like it was an artist that
- 42:09Speaker 1: no one was really familiar with compared to like Tip
- 42:12Speaker 1: tape or Bumbe tape that came before that. And then
- 42:14Speaker 1: obviously like Trappidized, like the world changed, like everything was different.
- 42:18Speaker 1: So so yeah, I would say going up to that
- 42:21Speaker 1: level that was those couple of tapes to figure it
- 42:23Speaker 1: out initially doing that first tape with Jez, was that like,
- 42:28Speaker 1: did you guys have an organic relationship or was it
- 42:30Speaker 1: like was how did that like, how did that initially start?
- 42:35Speaker 1: So the house, the crib that he's talking about five
- 42:37Speaker 1: thirty two, Glen Iris in the fourth ward. Our neighbor
- 42:42Speaker 1: around the corner was Coach k Okay. So we met
- 42:45Speaker 1: Coach when we moved into the neighborhood and he befriended
- 42:50Speaker 1: us early and we befriended each other. He had this
- 42:52Speaker 1: group called Jadis Bobby Creek Quarter was actually in a
- 42:55Speaker 1: group wound up signing to to Shady Up and then
- 43:00Speaker 1: you know we were all huh, slick pullo, slick pullo.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Oh for okay, so Slick was slick. Yeah. He was
- 43:07Speaker 1: one of the original rappers too. So then we you know,
- 43:12Speaker 1: Coach was telling us about you know, just this new
- 43:15Speaker 1: artist he had and Jez's first project was actually called
- 43:18Speaker 1: Come Shop with Me and he had this van. Yeah,
- 43:20Speaker 1: I remember seeing that. He's like in New Jersey. I
- 43:23Speaker 1: remember buying it from when he used to sound like
- 43:24Speaker 1: trick Daddy Wow. And then so we knew. So yeah,
- 43:28Speaker 1: it was it was pretty organic. You know, he came,
- 43:32Speaker 1: he came to me and we like we met at
- 43:34Speaker 1: this restaurant called Harry and Sons, and you know, we
- 43:38Speaker 1: he pretty much showed me. It told me his whole
- 43:40Speaker 1: vision like this, you know, the streets is really fucking
- 43:43Speaker 1: with your drama, Like you know, I don't even know
- 43:45Speaker 1: if you realize how much the streets is fucking with you.
- 43:48Speaker 1: And you know, he told me it's the movement in
- 43:50Speaker 1: the campaign, and yeah, it was. It was definitely it
- 43:53Speaker 1: was really organic. I mean even interestingly enough, you know
- 43:55Speaker 1: it's Atlanta too. So you know, Lake was running in
- 43:58Speaker 1: the Carbon fifteen around Tom and was telling early in
- 44:03Speaker 1: the game, Yeah, telling me I got my man Jeezy,
- 44:05Speaker 1: and I'd be like, huh, like, what are you talking about? Drama?
- 44:08Speaker 1: Be telling me about I Actually I actually met name too,
- 44:10Speaker 1: in a different occasion. I was in my dorm and
- 44:12Speaker 1: I used to have a window in my sit up
- 44:14Speaker 1: my DJ setup, and producing said up was in the window.
- 44:18Speaker 1: He used to come in. That's with the shorty that
- 44:21Speaker 1: was my next door neighbor. He ran by my window
- 44:23Speaker 1: one time and he was like, you make me fire.
- 44:27Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Get you some beats. But
- 44:28Speaker 1: it never turned into nothing because I you know, we
- 44:31Speaker 1: wound up meeting a little later. He always reminds me
- 44:33Speaker 1: of that. By the way, I knew you sit he
- 44:35Speaker 1: was making beat to your fucking dorm. Niggas did say
- 44:39Speaker 1: that not too long ago. I remember that. He reminds
- 44:41Speaker 1: me remember what he was talking about. I remember seeing him.
- 44:44Speaker 1: He's always had bread and I was like, well, who
- 44:46Speaker 1: is this cat bro? And I used to look. I
- 44:48Speaker 1: used to come out the door and I looked. He
- 44:50Speaker 1: had like this six forty five some crazy ship and
- 44:53Speaker 1: I'd be like, okay, that he's something, you know money. Yeah,
- 44:57Speaker 1: we wound up seeing him a little later and I
- 44:59Speaker 1: was like, Okay, that's the And he used to come
- 45:02Speaker 1: to club Envy all the time to his record, play
- 45:05Speaker 1: that record. Yeah, it used to break bread to get
- 45:09Speaker 1: that record play time. What's the craziest uh B MF
- 45:13Speaker 1: party or event you guys, I've heard stories about these
- 45:16Speaker 1: parties that are legendary, insane. What's the craziest thing his birthday? Yeah,
- 45:21Speaker 1: me birthday party, nothing, nothing with it to this day.
- 45:25Speaker 1: There was a Magic City party where I literally saw
- 45:28Speaker 1: regular women turn into strippers like shot the Hannah Kang.
- 45:32Speaker 1: That party was crazy. You used to have like animals, Yeah, yeah,
- 45:36Speaker 1: and I put that together. The invitation. Remember you used
- 45:39Speaker 1: to open it up and it talked to you. It
- 45:41Speaker 1: was like that like a diploma, Like it came rapped
- 45:44Speaker 1: like in a diploma. You opened it up and I
- 45:46Speaker 1: think it was blue. Eventually, like yeah, come to hang
- 45:49Speaker 1: with big Meat. To the jungle. I was like tigers,
- 45:55Speaker 1: it was grafts. It was all types of ship. Yeah.
- 45:58Speaker 1: They got girafts there that girafs shit everything. Yeah. I
- 46:02Speaker 1: was a legendary time. I mean just even you know,
- 46:05Speaker 1: like and we're talking about one of the craziest, but
- 46:08Speaker 1: like just on a regular night of visions on a
- 46:11Speaker 1: Tuesday or was it Thursday, whatever the night or oh
- 46:13Speaker 1: both of them, you know them niggas would literally come
- 46:15Speaker 1: in and be like fifty one hundred deep and everyone
- 46:18Speaker 1: would have a bottle like this is like early It
- 46:21Speaker 1: was just a different time, like nothing was like that era,
- 46:23Speaker 1: you know. Yeah. I remember one specific time I was
- 46:26Speaker 1: DJing off night and I think it was what it
- 46:30Speaker 1: dude Pippin. I think it was uh either gz gz
- 46:34Speaker 1: and Bumbee, And one night I played it and it
- 46:37Speaker 1: was like, every time you play that joint, put one
- 46:39Speaker 1: hundred dollars on the table. Man, I think I left
- 46:42Speaker 1: for thirty five hundred. I'm not even lying, Oh I'm lying.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I think in fact, every time they was like this.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Every time I ran it back, they was just dropping
- 46:50Speaker 1: it like this, and I was like, oh shit, this
- 46:52Speaker 1: is real. Yeah what I'm saying making I probably was
- 46:57Speaker 1: making two hundred and fifty dollars for the whole night.
- 47:00Speaker 1: First sure, the first time I ever saw any real
- 47:02Speaker 1: money was because of BMF Like so no. But even
- 47:07Speaker 1: before the l A trip, Uh, I was doing Gangster Girls.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I think it's still when it was like regular mixtape
- 47:15Speaker 1: and I asked Blue DaVinci, like, yo, do you want
- 47:17Speaker 1: to sponsor a tape? Like you know, I put a
- 47:18Speaker 1: song line, put your logo on and everything. He was
- 47:21Speaker 1: like like how much I was like, like, you know,
- 47:22Speaker 1: like eight you know what I mean something? He was
- 47:24Speaker 1: like eight. I got this, no problem. I'm thinking eight
- 47:26Speaker 1: hundred dollars. You know. He literally takes me to a
- 47:29Speaker 1: crib and gives me eight grand. Like I'd never seen
- 47:31Speaker 1: that type of money like that ship. I had that
- 47:35Speaker 1: eight grand for like, I literally had the cash and
- 47:37Speaker 1: I had it in my closet maybe for about a year.
- 47:40Speaker 1: You know. I'm still making okay money, but never where
- 47:43Speaker 1: I had gotten eight grand one one time. It was
- 47:47Speaker 1: like it blew me away. It was a shot that
- 47:50Speaker 1: those guys man shot, the blue shutter shot, the me shot,
- 47:53Speaker 1: the t you know, I mean, it was just a
- 47:55Speaker 1: it was. It was. It was a special time in
- 47:57Speaker 1: the lit Correct me if I'm wrong, y'all. But this
- 47:59Speaker 1: isn't isn't that the eraror where throwing money and the
- 48:02Speaker 1: eric comes from absolute and rain comes from absolutely from
- 48:08Speaker 1: that era Like and if it didn't, I'm gonna give
- 48:10Speaker 1: it to him because I've been in so many like
- 48:12Speaker 1: DJ and strip clubs where it was piles of money
- 48:15Speaker 1: this high. Bro, I've never seen nothing like the HM, JD,
- 48:17Speaker 1: Nelly them, they all it was different. It was different, Bro,
- 48:20Speaker 1: what which it was different what the people do in
- 48:22Speaker 1: the strip clubs before we made it rain, Like I
- 48:25Speaker 1: don't even remember, like how did the transaction dances? Dances?
- 48:31Speaker 1: I suppose yeah, like it changed the West Coast. We're
- 48:34Speaker 1: not you know, we come from a culture where it's
- 48:36Speaker 1: like we're not throwing nothing. You know what I'm saying
- 48:39Speaker 1: at all, you know, like it's it's amazing a thrown.
- 48:42Speaker 1: But what they used to do, like the briefcases and
- 48:44Speaker 1: trash bags, like come on that ship, was that it
- 48:46Speaker 1: was legendary. Wow, that's legendary. So obviously generation. Now you
- 48:55Speaker 1: guys a flagship artist UZI, Yeah, it's from your hometown.
- 49:01Speaker 1: How did you guys meet UZI? I remember the first
- 49:04Speaker 1: person that put me onto him was was it was
- 49:06Speaker 1: either Will from Taylor Game or Tie right, Yes, that
- 49:11Speaker 1: about Yeah, I think it was Tied. I think it
- 49:14Speaker 1: was in Boston with Tie and we're in his room
- 49:15Speaker 1: and he was just playing off SoundCloud. I was like,
- 49:17Speaker 1: what is this that came from us being on tour
- 49:19Speaker 1: and with those guys. Shout to those guys. So I
- 49:21Speaker 1: was actually the first one to give it pay show?
- 49:24Speaker 1: Oh wow, like a real pay show in La his
- 49:27Speaker 1: first showing up you want to hear some crazy shit.
- 49:29Speaker 1: In two thousand and fifteen, I had a birthday show
- 49:34Speaker 1: that Berner was supposed to headline in Phoenix and Burner
- 49:37Speaker 1: couldn't show up, and Will was like, look, man, do
- 49:40Speaker 1: you want me to get Zy? Do you want me
- 49:41Speaker 1: to try to get Uzy to do it? And at
- 49:43Speaker 1: the time, I was like, I don't know if these
- 49:45Speaker 1: people will give a fuck who little Uzzy is. Because
- 49:48Speaker 1: they were there. It was like a real like it
- 49:49Speaker 1: was like Burner and bos from Dream. It was like
- 49:52Speaker 1: some rap shit, right. I was like, I was like,
- 49:54Speaker 1: I'll pass, Like like, don't make the call, you know, idiot?
- 50:00Speaker 1: I am crazy? But but nah, But like, how did
- 50:03Speaker 1: you guys? Initially find Uzi ken Uh? I was working
- 50:08Speaker 1: at death Jam. I was vice president in UH and
- 50:12Speaker 1: I wind up a lot of people don't notice. When
- 50:14Speaker 1: I was trying to DJ, I was trying to transfer
- 50:16Speaker 1: over and doing ed M DJ wise and I got
- 50:20Speaker 1: connected with this guy named Sudrettist Yes and scam. He
- 50:24Speaker 1: represented me for about a year and some change and
- 50:27Speaker 1: he had me and just incredible, you know, I seem
- 50:30Speaker 1: just incredible fucking Billboard. I was just like, holy shit,
- 50:34Speaker 1: this is crazy. So I was like, y'all want to
- 50:37Speaker 1: get in this circuit. He was like, y'all gonna put
- 50:38Speaker 1: you on that same circuit. So I started doing Houston,
- 50:41Speaker 1: Vegas and Atlantic City. My first Atlantic City gig, I
- 50:45Speaker 1: think it was at MGM or something. I had to drive.
- 50:48Speaker 1: I had to fly into Philly and drive to Atlantic City.
- 50:51Speaker 1: And when I drove to Atlantic City, turned on the
- 50:54Speaker 1: radio and I was listening to Diamond Cuts. Diamond Cuts
- 50:58Speaker 1: is a different story too, because I used to DJ
- 51:01Speaker 1: for Miss Jade, and when I didn't go on the
- 51:03Speaker 1: road Miss Jade anymore, I seen Diamond Cuts some time.
- 51:06Speaker 1: It's like, Yo, you should take over what I'm doing.
- 51:08Speaker 1: You know what I mean with Miss Jade. And so
- 51:11Speaker 1: when I'm driving down there, she's playing just in the
- 51:13Speaker 1: mixshell and I heard the songs called the Real Uzi
- 51:16Speaker 1: and I was like, Yo, this sounds special. What is this?
- 51:19Speaker 1: I called her immediately, like YO, who is that? She
- 51:21Speaker 1: was like, Yo, it's an artist I'm working with named
- 51:23Speaker 1: luzi Vert. I was like, yo, I come back from Lang,
- 51:26Speaker 1: don't want to meet him. Time went by, I didn't
- 51:29Speaker 1: get a chance. But the next time, it's like next
- 51:32Speaker 1: time you're Philly. Come up, what's another weird situation. I
- 51:36Speaker 1: lived in, you know, this area called East Falls right
- 51:39Speaker 1: off for Ridge Avenue. They had a next door kind
- 51:41Speaker 1: of little city called Manyum And I went home and
- 51:46Speaker 1: I was like, I want to meet this kid. He's
- 51:47Speaker 1: probably in North Philly somewhere somebody basement recording some crazy shit. Right.
- 51:51Speaker 1: He's like, yo, Arren Manyum. So I was like, oh shit,
- 51:54Speaker 1: that's walking distance from the Crabs. I went to MANYUMK
- 51:58Speaker 1: went to the studio listen to some songs. He was
- 52:01Speaker 1: in the studio, just silent as a motherfucker, acting like
- 52:04Speaker 1: he know, was not just you know, he was just
- 52:06Speaker 1: being him. This guy uh, I forget the manager name,
- 52:10Speaker 1: Damn Buzz Okay Buzz was there. He was just you know,
- 52:14Speaker 1: speaking for him. He just kept playing me crazy records.
- 52:17Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, this shit crazy. So I
- 52:19Speaker 1: go back to Atlanta. I tell them, like, yo, we
- 52:22Speaker 1: could do this shit again. Because at the time we
- 52:24Speaker 1: wasn't really doing no record label stuff. Draming was building
- 52:27Speaker 1: the studio. He's like, y'all want you to see some shit.
- 52:29Speaker 1: You guys you know went down that road before. Yeah, yeah,
- 52:32Speaker 1: we did the affiliates and then I went to La
- 52:36Speaker 1: was trying to figure some things out. Moved there for
- 52:38Speaker 1: like eighteen months. Then like it came back home. But
- 52:42Speaker 1: me and John started communicating. He was like, Yo, I
- 52:44Speaker 1: want to show you something when you get back to Atlanta.
- 52:46Speaker 1: I came. He was building Mean streets, uh five one,
- 52:50Speaker 1: which is now the famous Father one Mean Streets, and
- 52:53Speaker 1: I uh and I seen it and I was just
- 52:55Speaker 1: I went in to the studio and he was just
- 52:56Speaker 1: asked me about equipment. I was like, damn, you gotta
- 52:58Speaker 1: get this right, mic and you know what I mean,
- 53:00Speaker 1: those speakers, we could do that. And you know, he
- 53:02Speaker 1: had a radio room and everything was getting built out
- 53:04Speaker 1: and it was just special. So I was like, damn.
- 53:06Speaker 1: As we started working and I was, I was coming
- 53:09Speaker 1: to the studio more regularly when he was doing stuff,
- 53:12Speaker 1: and I was like, y'all found this kid. We need
- 53:14Speaker 1: to do this shit. I'm telling you this shit gonna
- 53:16Speaker 1: work right. And then we was like shit, we all in.
- 53:18Speaker 1: We never really told each other, knowing nothing, but he
- 53:21Speaker 1: was like, Yo, this is gonna win. And this is
- 53:23Speaker 1: like our first time, like as the three of us
- 53:25Speaker 1: because we're always like make and drums relationship in ours
- 53:29Speaker 1: was different. Me and Lake would meet up and talk forever.
- 53:31Speaker 1: He would get me so much money on the mixtape side,
- 53:33Speaker 1: just hosting and he would bring Freeway over to the
- 53:36Speaker 1: crib and shit like that. And then they was doing
- 53:38Speaker 1: some stuff, so we all combineded, you know what I mean.
- 53:41Speaker 1: And then we finally got Ouzy to Atlanta, and I
- 53:43Speaker 1: think his first he recorded in January. He never left.
- 53:47Speaker 1: He just stayed I'm not going back on you know
- 53:50Speaker 1: what I mean. So that's how the whole play came together,
- 53:53Speaker 1: and then we just worked on it from there. It
- 53:54Speaker 1: was just you know what was that the Like was
- 53:56Speaker 1: the Carnage record, like his first like big look Yeah, yes, yeah,
- 54:01Speaker 1: because I remember that record, like just going up in
- 54:04Speaker 1: the club and and and that really being like I
- 54:09Speaker 1: had heard the name because of like because it will
- 54:11Speaker 1: but like, oh ship, this ship is yeah, And when
- 54:13Speaker 1: I speak about conviction, think about it. When I was
- 54:17Speaker 1: talking to him and trying to get him into the fold,
- 54:20Speaker 1: he was already talking to as ABMs already he was
- 54:24Speaker 1: Kanye was interested through this kid named Charlie Heat, and
- 54:27Speaker 1: Charlie Heat was working with Kanye. He was trying to
- 54:29Speaker 1: bring him there. He sat loved him, uh Rich the
- 54:35Speaker 1: kid and him was it was in a little space,
- 54:39Speaker 1: so it was like, you know, it was a lot
- 54:40Speaker 1: going on at that time. You know, while we was
- 54:43Speaker 1: trying to figure out how he was going to do
- 54:45Speaker 1: the deal, we still had a name. I think we
- 54:46Speaker 1: waited like six months trying to figure out what the
- 54:48Speaker 1: name of the company was gonna be. We were just
- 54:50Speaker 1: like nameing shit anything. Just signed him in this go.
- 54:53Speaker 1: We didn't. You know, it was just a tough just
- 54:55Speaker 1: trying to figure it all out because it was so
- 54:57Speaker 1: it was so sudden, you know what I mean. Even
- 54:59Speaker 1: at that time, I was trying to even though we
- 55:02Speaker 1: was doing it, I was gonna take our situation and
- 55:04Speaker 1: try to do it through Death Jam and that didn't
- 55:06Speaker 1: work out because it was just so much going on.
- 55:08Speaker 1: I brought so much talent to death Jam to just
- 55:10Speaker 1: wind up not getting signed that I was just like, yo,
- 55:13Speaker 1: it's time I learned some stuff like who I brought
- 55:16Speaker 1: Rich on me Kwan. I told him about the Migos,
- 55:20Speaker 1: I told him about Iggy Azelia. Very early. I actually
- 55:24Speaker 1: tried to sign Asap Rocky in the Asam Mob and
- 55:27Speaker 1: when I couldn't get them because they was already getting
- 55:29Speaker 1: ready to get committed. I seen that Iggy Azella was there.
- 55:34Speaker 1: She had a song called Pussy. It was like twenty eleven.
- 55:36Speaker 1: I sent the email. It's like, nah, you know what
- 55:39Speaker 1: I'm saying, wind up getting signed later. It was just
- 55:42Speaker 1: so much random shit that you know, I was just
- 55:45Speaker 1: telling them about and it just didn't work out. Uh.
- 55:47Speaker 1: There was some like Dirk and Reese that there was
- 55:51Speaker 1: something that we kind of like nurtured logic. These are
- 55:56Speaker 1: all the things that we no, I got no oppressed.
- 56:00Speaker 1: But we all were like when we were to Cali
- 56:02Speaker 1: was meet him, No, I d We're all like a hub.
- 56:04Speaker 1: So we were just bringing things in trying to work it.
- 56:07Speaker 1: I think, uh uh, who is it? Jenne Ioki. We
- 56:12Speaker 1: just had a mean team. We were like administration, so
- 56:15Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So when we were when
- 56:17Speaker 1: we were doing all that, I was learning so much.
- 56:19Speaker 1: I was like, Yo, we can do this because I
- 56:20Speaker 1: already know how the buildings work. You know what I mean.
- 56:22Speaker 1: We're in the building. Yeah, yeah, I knew for three years.
- 56:25Speaker 1: I said, oh man, I learned so much, let's let's
- 56:27Speaker 1: go do this ship outside, you know what I mean.
- 56:29Speaker 1: And I was just almost certain, you know, it had
- 56:32Speaker 1: almost gotten over to Atlantic, he was. It almost took
- 56:35Speaker 1: like the finding the right artists to like, you know,
- 56:39Speaker 1: we had tried to sign a couple of other people
- 56:41Speaker 1: initially when we first got going, Like we took a
- 56:43Speaker 1: couple of trips, and we had flown to see a
- 56:45Speaker 1: couple of people, and like we always had them like
- 56:49Speaker 1: right here, and we would lose them at the last minute.
- 56:51Speaker 1: And that's why we were so adamant about the uzy thing.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Did you anybody that we would know that you? Absolutely? Yeah,
- 56:56Speaker 1: Like I think the first one was Ot Genesis. We
- 57:00Speaker 1: did playhouse with Ot one night and night Ot from
- 57:02Speaker 1: a while back, and I ended up dming him and
- 57:05Speaker 1: I think I overslept and I didn't end up checking
- 57:07Speaker 1: my responses and when I woke up and checked the
- 57:09Speaker 1: next day, I think bust Alady So tried to sign
- 57:13Speaker 1: Tori trying to sign Tory Lanes. Yeah, we met with
- 57:15Speaker 1: Sasha early in the game, right and steam House Steamhouse
- 57:21Speaker 1: theme House had met with about Tory lanezgos. Yeahs wow,
- 57:27Speaker 1: you tried to so because like I heard so, was
- 57:33Speaker 1: Gucci the first person to like kind of find the migos? Yes, well, yeah,
- 57:38Speaker 1: because Gucci was already in business with them. I think
- 57:43Speaker 1: like before you went to John and so you guys
- 57:45Speaker 1: tried to sign them prior to the QC thing happening.
- 57:48Speaker 1: It was around the same time. I mean, at the
- 57:50Speaker 1: same time that I was like we were in talks
- 57:52Speaker 1: with them, they were also meeting with other people, so
- 57:54Speaker 1: were other there were other entities in Atlanta, you know,
- 57:57Speaker 1: that were interested in new of them and everything. But
- 57:59Speaker 1: you know, I mean we had a great report with
- 58:00Speaker 1: them early on, Like you know, I you know, Quavo
- 58:03Speaker 1: tell you like the first time they went he's been
- 58:05Speaker 1: in New York was you know, I took him up
- 58:07Speaker 1: there for a meeting. I had brought him out to
- 58:11Speaker 1: Birthday Bat the first time doing Birthday Bash was on
- 58:13Speaker 1: my set early on, So you know, I mean definitely,
- 58:17Speaker 1: you know, see what those guys became, you know what
- 58:20Speaker 1: I'm saying from those early years. But but yeah, so
- 58:22Speaker 1: it was because of those situations that we were like
- 58:25Speaker 1: like yeah, we you know, let's let's we can do this.
- 58:28Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. All Right, I just joked
- 58:30Speaker 1: on a candy. Yeah, we had true Man and then
- 58:36Speaker 1: and then yeah, so I had been in Atlantic as
- 58:41Speaker 1: an a and r maybe about it a year and
- 58:43Speaker 1: a half already, and you know, I was kind of
- 58:46Speaker 1: trying to like find my way. You know, Canda figured
- 58:49Speaker 1: it out a lot differently than me, you know what
- 58:51Speaker 1: I'm saying, just as far as like, you know, how
- 58:53Speaker 1: how it was going to maneuver because Atlantic was was
- 58:56Speaker 1: trying to put me in with other artists that were
- 58:59Speaker 1: already on the label. And you know, it was cool,
- 59:02Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I had a good rapport,
- 59:04Speaker 1: but it wasn't you know, we finally kind of when
- 59:06Speaker 1: it was time to renegotiate, you know, they literally was
- 59:08Speaker 1: like it was kind of you know, a little a
- 59:11Speaker 1: little shaky, and it was like listen, you know they
- 59:14Speaker 1: believed in me. You know they knew that, you know,
- 59:17Speaker 1: because of our rapport. You know, I had been signed
- 59:19Speaker 1: there as an artist and everything and just our relationships.
- 59:22Speaker 1: They are like, listen, we want to give you another shot.
- 59:24Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Let's let's figure this out.
- 59:26Speaker 1: You take me in streets, you guys, you know, take
- 59:29Speaker 1: Uzzie and was just like, you know, let you guys
- 59:32Speaker 1: figure out how you want to do it instead of
- 59:34Speaker 1: us trying to put something on you. And we was
- 59:35Speaker 1: like bet you know that was a perfect situation for us.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Off to the races. Yeah. So and then you know
- 59:40Speaker 1: again like you know, I remember the first time we
- 59:44Speaker 1: met Uzzie was when we were on tour with Wiz
- 59:48Speaker 1: and he we had a show and like the Philly, Philly,
- 59:51Speaker 1: New Jersey area, he came to the show and first
- 59:54Speaker 1: I remember the first day he got on the bus,
- 59:56Speaker 1: he cracked on my jeans or some ship like Uzzy fashion,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So, but you know, he
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: always had that energy, and then you know, he always
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: knew like you know, he definitely had a vision. So
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: it was almost like he paid for some of that ship.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: But he didn't like when I was in Philly, I
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: met him the first time, meeting in South Street. He
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: pull up in this truck as him and his cousin,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: big buff as cousin. I'm like, what they think They're
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: about to beat me up or something. So we were
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: on the street and he was like, yo, take a
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: walk with me. So we walking were talking and you know,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I mean, we going to different stores and he'd be like, oh,
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: that's the kid Oozy and I'm like, yo, no way,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: I didn't know this kid. It was very early, but
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: they was like, yo, fuck with your ship. So it
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: made me do a little little investigation and it was
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: like he had already been doing like little things like
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: beat battles, I mean rat battles and ship everywhere. So
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, that's how they know because I was
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: going to store. They was like slightly starstruck a little bit.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: This is early. I'm like, wait, what's going on? That's
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: what I knew. I was like, yo, yeah, it's crazy
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: because for a long time, bro, we always tried to
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: get a Philly artist, you know what I'm saying, And
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: it's just happened to be the time they give a
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Philly artists. Everybody told us, yo, you got to get
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: an artist from the South, you gotta get an artist
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: fro himself. It was like, yeah, we're open to it,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: and that just fell in our laps and somebody who's
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: not like the traditional and that's what's what's even crazier
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: about it is, you know, obviously we all know, you
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: know what Philly rappers sounded like before that or what
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: you know, the perception was, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: So when Uzi came along and he was just like
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: he was, there was nobody else like him, especially from Philly,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Like we want to grab me water in I got.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: I got a half a damn cough drop stuck in
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: my fucking throat where those red candies were. Yeah, much
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: better Jesus. Anyway, I wanted to ask, like I just myself,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: what is the current relationship with Uzzi, because you know,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I mean everything's kind of been public that there's obvious
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: some disagreements, and you know, what is your guys current
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: relationship with him? He signed a generation now he pretty
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: much does his thing, you know, and like we support
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: it and allow it, and you know, I'm very proud
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: of him. Yeah, yeah, I mean it's pretty much like
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the basic you know, like record label artist situation. You know,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: he's at a state where he likes to kind of
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: control his own creative thing. He's always you know, been
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: a part of other than Cannon being super hands on
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and pretty much he controls the time and the dynamic
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: like change between everybody like win like like I mean obviously,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: you know, I feel like you guys kind of brought
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: him up in the game, right, and then there's obviously
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: a disconnect that happened. Like it's always human nature. You
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: know what I mean that that's what happens. You know,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: you've seen him with the best, you know, doctor Joran Snoop,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: Like there was no real problem. You know people put
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: out there. But it's just like when you become an artist,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: you can't even me as a part car producer. At
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: some point when you have the success, you'd be like, yeah,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: I did this, you know what I mean. I did this,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: so you know what I mean. So I you know,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: I ran into those things where you know, honestly, nobody
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: know the story. In two thousand and eight, I was
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: feeling myself and I kind of left them out. I
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: remember that in the cold, and I was just like,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: you know, obviously it was it was something between us
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: that had nothing to do with them, but it was
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: just like, man, I do it. I could do it
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: on my own. Fucking you guys had your like little
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: pause in your relationship, and it was just like it
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: was it was weird because this is funny, this is
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: why I'm talking about it. But it was like we
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: were throwing shots at each other on the tapes and
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: we would see each other and everything cool. I saw
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: them like multiple times, and I just always thought when
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: we see each other, it's gonna be it's gonna be something,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I'm just it's me and
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: my cousin. It was ten twelve deep, you know what
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: I'm saying. And we were always cool each other and
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: it would be cordial until you know, me and Drom
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: just sat down. I was like, I think it was
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: at Jersey Mikes or some yea, And by the time
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: we got like what we even talk about? It's just nothing,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So it always happens with
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: this stuff. And you know, as you make music, uh,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: things happen, people want to do things. I think with
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: UZI too, with our situation is that obviously on our end,
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: we would never have wanted any of it to play
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: out in the public. You know, I think a lot
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: of artists and record labels go through similar situations. I
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: feel like it's just kind of like a generational thing,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: like when people get angry with what it's a generational
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: thing because of social media, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: of course that's how they expressed themselves. That's how they
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: express themselves. And you know, from on our end, like
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: you know, we never you know, we never really even
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: went on a platform and you know, defended ourselves or
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: you know, anything like that, and we just we didn't
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: really want that, you know what I'm saying. And this
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: I mean obviously wanted to. We didn't want to be
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: painted as no bad guys, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: But I mean, I'm sure the fan like his fans
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: are crazy. Oh yeah, it was it was killing a
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: social media I had to take a pause, you know,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I think, thank you, it was he like I definitely
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: had to like get off for a quick minute. But
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: you know, I mean, it's crazy just you know, I
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: don't get any of that anymore. But it's like, you know,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: we we wanted to. We've been in this business so long.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: You know, our reputations are everything, of course, so clearly,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: you know, I guess more than anything, you know, we
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: let Tom tell you know what I'm saying, and you know,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: more like again, he's he's family, he's our artist, so
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: you know, we don't want anything but the best for him,
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I always you feel what
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: I'm saying. So it was like for us, we just
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: had to allow, you know, we just had to let
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: it play out and you know, fans are going to
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: say what they're gonna say, or people are gonna have
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: their interpretation who don't know us per se, and you
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: know it is what it is. Like I think, did
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: you guys get like a blunt of the blame from
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: fans for Eternal Take taking a blunt all of it?
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: What was like the story as to why it took
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: so long? Like if you if you don't mind getting
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: into it, like what's the story or why did it?
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Like why did it take so long? Was it was it?
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: You know? Because I think that they literally put the
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: album out when you wanted to. That's the craziest part
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: about everything, Like I like, you guys were holding them up.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: And I mean this is the most basic thing that
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: I tell everybody, Like we are in the business of
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: selling music, you know what I'm saying, So there is
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: no benefit to us to hold any of course not
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: It's just not even logical, you know what I'm saying,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Like we don't eat if music doesn't come out, you know,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: So like I don't know what power, struggle or what
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: pride like would allow us to even do something like that.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: So ultimately, like for real, these guys put music out
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: sometimes they come to us two days before that used
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: to be, I mean, and its main plan because remember
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: we came at the transition from the physical age to
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: the digital and so I remember when Canon would come
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: to me and be like, Yo, this kid wants to
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: put a project out tomorrow and I have to clear
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: your ten beats, you know, and so on and so forth.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Like it's literally a feeling. And when they have the feeling,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: like they call me and the ship has to come out,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So we don't really get
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: any benefit from like withholding or like saying something can
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: or can't come out. You know, when it's ready, We're
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: ready for that ship to come out, too, Yeah, I mean,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: like like he dropped pretty much what two albums and
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: back to back? Is that? I wonder too, because like
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: you know, obviously your guys is kind of situation has
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: been public. In my head, I thought, is he trying
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: to put out like is he trying to get out
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: of his deal as quick as possible? Because you know
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: there's like Drake, Like Drake you know did that with
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: the you know, like like artists have done that, you
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: know in the past, Like when when or is it
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: just the deluxe play because he kind of low key
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: can deluxe play off? Yeah, just to think it's just
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: just a deluxe play. Yeah, I think it's just something
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: you want to get off. And I don't think he
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: wanted to keep both vibe in that name. So it
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: was like one one half of the album was kind
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: of like the first we had it was the World,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: So he didn't want to keep everything because I think
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: the Eternal Hockey he just wanted to have like this,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. And then right right, right right,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: it's just something you know. And then with Jack, like
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: your guys are story finding Jack because you know, if
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: you saw Jack Harlowe uh when you guys first signed him,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: you know, he doesn't scream like Superstar, looks like he
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: looks like like like someone who works at the geek Squad,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: a best buyer or something, you know what I mean.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: And he's from Louisville, which is like a place that's
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: not known as like a talent hub. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: drawn pretty much really kind of steered that in the direction.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: But again when we all met, it's something that the
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: guys have and they I and they the way they
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: carry itself is like Bro, that's gonna be some work,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: but it's gonna work, you know what I mean. And
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: that's we all see it. We're like, man, we gotta
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: do that one. We got to it don't matter what
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: he looked like. It it's the feeling. It was the
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: energy that he had. He already had a squad with him.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: His producer was dope at his producer still as dope
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: as hell too. For one. You know, it just was
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: like it just was there and it was like, let's
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: do it. You know what I'm saying. It didn't take
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: too much. And it's hard to get these guys to agree.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Like so it's three of us, right, and it's supposed
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: to be two out of three, But really I'm usually
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: just the guy that's waiting to say yes, right. I
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: bring a lot of stuff to the table, and it's
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: hard as hell to really convince this guy. And it's
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: hard as hell to convince him too, you know what
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I mean. So a lot of stuff that comes to
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: the table, especially from our n R staff, Like it's
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that shot down. So when we
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: see something that we like, like we really attached, I
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: can imagine like the like the success of what's popping
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: had to really like, it had to be sweeter than
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: a lot of stuff you guys have done before his
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: generation now, because I feel like at that time people
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: were kind of like, well, you know, with the oozy
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: shit being out there, and then you know, Jack Harlow
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: comes back, what was it? I mean, is it triple platinum? Yeah?
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Like that. And the craziest part about that record was,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: I remember when we played it in the music meeting
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: and I loved I'd already heard it on Spotify and
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: I loved the record, But it doesn't it didn't have
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: like it wasn't like a traditionally formatted song, like when
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: you first heard it, you're like, wait, I gotta figure
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: out where the hook is? Type ship? But how like
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: sweet was that? Like? It almost was like I felt
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: like if I was y'all, I would have been like, yeah, motherfucker,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: we did it again. We did at some point, but
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: we also, like us not staying in the public and
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: doing too much chedder chatter made it even more sweet. Absolutely,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. That came out and yeah,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: it was just like let's keep working, man, just make
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: some ship. Like we still had the fun in it,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: you know, what I mean. And to make it even better,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: we have been working with Jackie. He's been making these
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: certain type of songs and we always say to him
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: all three of us, yo, you can rap, but he
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: always like, yeah, I know, but I want to. I
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: got this vibe. I'd be like, you can rap, you
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. So when that came out, it
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: was like, Bro, your first big record rapping. You see
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: what I'm saying. And he started out like that Dark
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Knight was a rap record, and we just always stuck
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: with that, you know what I mean. So that's what
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: makes it sweeter that we just put our head down
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: and just kept working and it just popped up. It
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: wasn't like, oh, we got to hit y'all, we ready.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: It was just like, man, we walk and rolling again.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: And I don't know, you know, sometimes I feel like,
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: you know, we've maneuvered through our careers. I don't necessarily
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: want to say underdogs, but feeling like, yo, like this
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: is what we do. Like we've been doing this a
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: long time. We got to show you again, this is
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: what we do. So it's like, you know, even through that,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: it was like again us not really being vocal about
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: it and just working and you know, having the results
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: we have. It's like, you know, like come on, guys, like, duh,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: We've been telling you this for years. This is what
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: we do. We're gonna keep doing it, you know what
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: I'm saying. So yeah, I mean obviously it was definitely
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: like it was a sweet feeling, you know what I'm
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: saying to you know, to come out through the year
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: of twenty twenty and you know have such a productive,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: you know moment for generation now. Yeah, Like and I
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: feel like too, you know, like you said, you guys
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: kind of started this with the transitional period of where
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: music was and how it was consumed and especially now right,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: like the playlisting shit is kind of crazy. Yeah, it's
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: really like the gatekeepers of people's careers smaller real shit,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Like it used to be
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: like there was like twenty five blogs that if you
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: could get on one, like four of them, like you
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: could really you know. Now it's like you gotta there's
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: like this many people that choose the like who's the next, right,
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I'm curious what would be
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: some advice you guys would give managers who are managing
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: artists or just young artists who are up and coming
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: trying to navigate their way, who are dope, you know,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: maybe have a little bit of traction, but just trying
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: to navigate their way through the current musical climate. Because
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: I do feel like the first thing every artist wants
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: to do is get on a playlist, and I'm not
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: sure how like realistic that is for everybody. Yeah, now
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: that's a tough question because even when it comes to
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: the playlist, like I'm you know, I can only imagine
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: what it's like, you know, coming from trying to make it,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: and you know, it's like, you know, damn, they're impossible
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: to get on playlists, you know what I'm saying. So
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: to me, I feel like the the DSPs are the
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: new radio and in my opinion, and I think the
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: first thing I would tell a young manager and a
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: young artist is is like, don't short change the process.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Like I think a lot of these kids everything is
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: so microwavable that they want everything so fast, Like I
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: get so many d ms every day, Like how can
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: you put me in contact with, you know, a digital
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: marketer that can get me on rap cavear. They're not
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: asking to get on you know, realists down south and
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: take the steps up. They want to take the leap
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: from the directly to the top. And you know, I
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: say this all the time, Like rap, to me, that's
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: the only game that really doesn't have a system of checks.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: And like, you know, there is a kid that can
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: honestly make a song in his bathroom and get on
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: rap caviaar. But there's also a guy that's been rapping
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: for fifteen years that can't get breaks, you know. So
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: what I would say is, don't short change the process
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: for real, if you love it, it's gonna show. Like
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: the guys that are the big guys, the guys that
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: are the ones like that are consistently the ones that
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: we think about. Those are the guys that put time
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: and energy into this shit. Like the guys that you
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: think play around, they don't as simple as you think.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Uzzi's music is that kid literally lived in the studio
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: all day every day. He works on his melodies. He
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: thinks about every concept. Another thing I would tell the
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: kids is is uh, you know, and it's something that
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: they've actually created. Is you know, I think you need
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: to blend the lifestyle with the music. A lot of
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: people are attracted to the lifestyle before the music. So
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: I think that's something that Uzzi and Cardi Playboy Cardio,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: who does a lot of work in here too, They've
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: they've gotten kids attracted to the lifestyle, you know. Yeah,
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: they're into Yeah, they're into the personality. The person is
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: even more than the absolutely yeah, so that makes them
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: fall in love with the music. And I think that's
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: that's the attraction that Uzzi's fans have to his music.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: It's almost like an emotional attachment. They feel like they
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: are him, you know, they feel like they are that
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: kid that's going through the same emotional say, if you
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: can make people care about you and make good music,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: then you know, it's just a matter of time. You
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: just got to make people give a fuck about you, because,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: like you said, like so many people are making music.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: There's great music we'll never hear because it's hard to
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: be relatable to have people give a fuck about you.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Dram I know, you know, you just did the Black
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: Soprano Family Gangster Grills. Yes, shout out to Benny who's
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: out here in Atlanta now a lot. How active are
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: you trying to be like still with you know, doing
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: doing that kind of ship, like, I'm all for it.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: You know, people people come to me all the time
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: like either ask if I'm still doing tapes or still
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: show interest in doing tapes, you know, So like I
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: love that one was on the DSPs. You know I
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: was on the DSPs. You know, I just didn't want
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: with Tiger. Yeah you did do one with Yeah. I
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: was on Yeah, Shut the West Side Got I was
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: on his album. So you know, I'm when it comes
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: to tapes, like you know, it's I'm not going nowhere,
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. This is what I do. Besides,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: you know, I mean as much as I'm an executive CEO,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: you know, label owner, fucking studio owner, I'll still go
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: and DJ somewhere, you know what I'm saying, and rock,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So I got some I
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: got some more projects coming this year. Actually that's gonna
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: surprising people when it comes to some tapes. So I'm
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: looking forward to to those being humble about that. To
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: some ship coming, a new Drake album. I got some
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: ship coming, Drake Gangster Girls coming. Yeah, I would definitely
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: do that of course for that. Uh got some ship,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: I got some ship. That's it. It's just randomly Like,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: did you ever get annoyed when no DJ versions of
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: your tapes would go? Well? Yeah, because I felt like
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: that happened because of me. Like I literally feel like
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: people got but it was it was it was part
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: of annoying, and it was part complimentary, you know, because
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: one of the reasons why I think it started to
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: happen is because a lot of music off the tapes,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: you know, would have to live in other places with
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: the radio, radio and so forth. So you know, they
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: literally had to create that, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: And you know I tried to. Once that became a thing,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I was like, all right, how can I navigate around this?
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: So I was like, all right, let me kind of
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: you know, uh, you know, come back, fall back a
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: little bit as far as how boisterous I am on
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: the tapes to try to make people still not do
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: it no DJ version. It didn't always work. They still
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: did no DJ versions. But you know, I'm one that
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: kind of you know, I don't, I don't. I try
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: not to get caught in, Like I don't want to
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: call it bitterness. Like yo, if that's the way it is,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: all right, let me figure out how to work around
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So, like, you know, I
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: do a currency tape and verdict Terris, I can't scream
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: on a currency's music the way I do fucking you
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: know whoever or little brother exactly, I get it. So yeah,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: I mean you know, I took it as a as
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: a former compliment to like we I think we later
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: grew into like let them have it. There's so many
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: people should call us, be like, yo, can we get
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: the jeezy music with no talking on it? No niggy Yeah, well,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you know you'd be at fucking whatever strip club across
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: the America. I've been in and they're playing the drama
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: fucking version in the club and it's thanks Vin. I
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: think it was a little off fault, but I think
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: a little bit of most fifty percent of it. I
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: noticed when I meet people for the first time, they say, yo,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: and these these people had great albums, great stri come
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: to and be like, Yo, I ain't gonna lie. We
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: just thought you'all was gonna turn us down on the tape,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: so we just did it without y'all, you know what
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: I mean. Damn, I don't know if I ever told you.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: I just just random people. I ran into like, Bro,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: I just didn't think about it asking. I just thought
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: it was shot in the dark. It was on you
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: wasn't gonna listen because there's so many people that used
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: to hit us on my space, like of course, you
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: know I still here to this day about some of
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: these producers. They'd be like, Bro, I used to hit
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: you on my space. Here you ain't respond. Boy used
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: to send me packs every day in one day. You know.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: It's just so many people and I think that's what
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: happened a lot of that times, like damn, no DJ version.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: It's like a lot of people just ain't ain't saying ass.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: But you still to this day people will tell you
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: that it's just not the same. It's not the same.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: It's not the same, man, for sure. Yeah. Can what
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: do you I mean on the production side, what are
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: you work like, do you have any shit come like
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: coming soon or like I know you're working with everybody,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: so yeah, I mean it's crazy as twenty twenty was. Man,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: I was twenty five placements in just quietly had crazy.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I really had, you know about thirty. But there's something
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: that didn't go across, you know, right right right. It's
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: just that's quiet because they say the new producer gets
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: three placements year, and I'm forty one still getting twenty
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: five to thirty. It's crazy, so I'm happy for that.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: You know, this year is probably gonna be even better
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: because last year I set my goal to make five
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: hundred beats in one year, and I normally don't work
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: that hard, and I did it, so I have tons
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: of leftovers. If you're watching this, you're gonna get tapping.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: I send your pack. I mean you just said you
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: you are. You've seen Killer Mike. You've been working with
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: him on the load, really and I think you heard
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: yeah telling me yeah, yeah. So I've been working with him.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: We've been talking on the phone two hours about everything,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: and then the last thirty minutes will be like, yo, music,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: I got bars. I'm gonna show you the pad because
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: a lot of times we've been me and Killing Mike
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: been trying to work since two thousand and eight and
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: it just never worked. But it wasn't like this is
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: your first time, get absolutely shit, but he's always Yo's crazy.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: When you sit down for five minutes, sit me some beats,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: and I would send them beats. Even through running jewels.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: It was like he would take. He's like, Yo, I'm
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: gonna do to run the Jewels. When I get off
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: of my own, I do it. So this is one
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: and I'm like pet Peef projects that I'm like, Okay,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: finally about to do something. But the record that he
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: just sent me, he didn't tell me. He just sent
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: it to me. He didn't say a word. I was like, Oh,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Okayne's probably the one I heard. Yeah, what was fire about?
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: Cannon too? And the production is like the same way
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: we navigate, just kind of like errors and genres. He
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: does on the production side too, Like he's in with
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: you know, generational artists as well as new niggas and
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: you know, like young niggas coming ups like Cannon can
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: can play in a lot of you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: it's true. It's just dropped the mixtape. I'm on that.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: It's just so much, you know, but production is yeah, herbo.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: I'm just trying to really, my my next wave is
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: SETI Hendricks really because I want to I know what
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: he him, Yeah, I had to. I had to just
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: chop myself off. I was. People were saying I was
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: using a bad word with him, but I called him
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: the trap art Kelly because he has like trap antics,
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: not because he's pissing on women. He has bro his
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: melodies retarded and he could do so much and it's
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: like bro. It reminded me with some like woman's threat,
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: like R. Kelly joints and like some of them joints,
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: and I was like, yo, he need like pain, but
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: on that level pain Like he talking as shit, but
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: it's like woman's threat. You know what I'm saying, real shit.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: And I think that once I let him get off
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: what he got to get off now just to be
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: in the street, I'm just going to jump into like Okay,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: I tried it once we had Hands Down, which was
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: a dope ass record and it did well for people.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: But I want to just kind of bring him into
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: where he could see like, oh shit, now I'm cooking
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: with gas. So that you mentioned Seddy run down before
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: we wrap up, Like you guys have a full roster,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: so kind of you know what's what's next, who's next,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: and you know, give everybody kind of a rundown on
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: what's next for the label. I mean, jack off to
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: a wonderful will start, you know what I mean. Uzzi's
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: off to a great start. I'm pretty sure he's ready
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: to drop this year SETI is. He's moving through situation
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: where we got a new video to new videos. It's
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: about to drop. That's gonna be crazy. But still working
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: on the projects. And we also got a Calluminati, which
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: is a fan favorite on TikTok and all them just
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: been a fan favorite. Saprio new success. She's been in
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: this space for about four years. Carvina Jones is R
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: and B artist. We we tapped into that. I think
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: that secretly we've always did a different a lot of music.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: I started off my first mixtape, Drawn with Selling was
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: an R and B mixtape. Blake's always been in the
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: R and B world. He knows that, like the back
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: of his head has always been in. It was relaxation
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: tapes and just different things. And I think that we're
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: gonna bust open a whole nother space when we get
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: her going. She's a special, great talent, and those are
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: things I was focus focusing with. But I think mostly
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the SETTI kind of the next Yeah, I just feel it,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: you know how you feel something, I feel I feel
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: the energy to feel it. I feel it. It's just
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: going one connection and then everybody's gonna be like, yo,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: you know, take that one record, that's it. Yeah. So
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: all right, well well look I appreciate y'all sitting down
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: with me. Absolutely appreciate you coming out. Man. I love
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: the studio and you guys are killing the man so
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: fun fact, the room we're in now, What's Popping was
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: made in here. It was probably the first record that
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: was made in this building, in the New Generation Now building,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: which we built this building because of the success of
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: a little Uzian Generation Now from starting in main streets. Wow.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Well that's how it goes. Special room in here. I
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: saw those guys man shout to the whole roster, shot
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to Uzzy, and I just want to shout out Jack
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Harbor for keeping Caucasian humor alive, because he'd be saying,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: ship bro, it's like none other dude. No, but it's
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: like it's me white boy humor. Yeah, white boy. I
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: always tell him, I'm like, bro, these these motherfuckers don't
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: get white boar humor. Just I'm money made. Need like
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: an hour board to hear your white boy humor. Yeah,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: it's suspect as fun, it's not yours. Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah,
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: guys can get away with murder. Oh yeah, I don't
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: even want to ship. Yea, absolutely, it's Will Farrell. You
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: know what I mean. Put that in our group chat
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: in me, dude. These guys curved the ship out of them.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: These guys hate my guts. Anyway, listen, you guys, I'm
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: looking forward to your year on the producer side drama.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: I know, was it last year you put out the
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: record West Side Gun? Was it was it? It was
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: that year? It was last year we got something more
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: drama drama. Yeah, I got I got some ship coming.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: All right, we'll listen. Look and you know like you're
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: I don't have anything coming. Yes, he does. Money. Money's
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: got all the money. He has all the money, the
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: money money. And he's also the founder of the Paul
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: George fanclub. O. He loves PG thirteen can ball, Yes
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: he can ball. You don't. PG don't hate me, but
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: you know what I mean, we have arguments about this ig.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: You can ball, bro all right there it is perfect, man,
