Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Maybe Eli Drinkwitz Should Leave Mizzou, Ohio State vs Penn State & World Series Recap | Charlie Marlow Show

- 0:00You see the headline, maybe Eli Drinkwitz should leave Mizzou.
- 0:06And I'll just be completely honest, I'm contradicting
- 0:10myself. I did a video here on this
- 0:14platform weeks ago, month ago, whenever it was, and I said Eli
- 0:20Drinkwitz should never leave Mizzou.
- 0:24And when I did that video, I believe that at the time, but
- 0:29then I thought a little bit more.
- 0:32And so for anybody that doesn't know, Eli Drinkwitz, head
- 0:36football coach at Mizzou, he is being talked about for a lot of
- 0:40these openings. I've seen him.
- 0:43He was the betting favorite last week or so for Florida, also
- 0:48being talked about at Penn State.
- 0:50I'm not sure if he's really in the mix for LSU.
- 0:54We shall see. There's a lot of big time
- 0:57openings and there's going to be even more openings as we move
- 1:01forward and especially after the season.
- 1:03But I was thinking about it because originally I thought,
- 1:07well, look, Eli Drinkwitz, you're at Mizzou.
- 1:10You could go down as the the greatest coach at Mizzou.
- 1:13They'll build you a statue. You don't have the same type of
- 1:17expectations as a Penn State, as an LSU, as a Florida, where you
- 1:24could be easily fired after 2-3, Four Seasons if they don't like
- 1:30what they're seeing. You're Eli Drinkwitz.
- 1:34He's about my age, I think I'm 43.
- 1:36He's a little bit younger. You could probably stay at
- 1:39Mizzou for the next 20 years. So why do you want to leave
- 1:44again for all those things I mentioned, the pressure and all
- 1:47that. You could get fired.
- 1:48But then I thought about it more and I was thinking about Rich
- 1:52Rodriguez when I was making this comparison.
- 1:56First of all, Eli Drinkwitz may never have another opportunity
- 2:02where he's being discussed for some of the best jobs in college
- 2:06football. Now he may five years from now,
- 2:09maybe he's great at Mizzou, maybe he doesn't leave.
- 2:11I don't know. But to a certain extent, you
- 2:15have to strike while the iron is hot.
- 2:17And right now, Eli Drinkwitz is a hot name in college football.
- 2:22Because what he's built at Mizzou, especially the last
- 2:25couple seasons, there's no guarantee that I'll have more 10
- 2:29win seasons back-to-back, whatever it was at Mizzou.
- 2:32And three years from now, maybe he's not talked about for future
- 2:37big openings. And so again, I'm thinking about
- 2:40Rich Rodriguez and you have to put yourself in Eli Drinkwitz
- 2:46shoes. Mizzou fans aren't going to like
- 2:48what I say here. But think about it like this.
- 2:52If you're Eli Drinkwitz and you're at Mizzou, which is a a
- 2:57really good job, it's a good job.
- 2:59But think about the tiers of college football.
- 3:02It's not a tier one job. Now, wherever you want to slot
- 3:05Mizzou, Tier 2, Tier 3, and I'm not, I'm not trying to talk
- 3:10about tears for disrespect, but Mizzou is clearly a program that
- 3:14can be top 25. You can be top 20, top 15.
- 3:19Can you perennially be top ten? Probably not.
- 3:24Certainly not perennially top five you would think.
- 3:27But it's a good job. But there's a lot of schools
- 3:31like Mizzou, Power 4, Power 5. I know we're calling it Power 4
- 3:36now, but there's a lot of Power 4 jobs like Mizzou where if
- 3:40you're thinking about this from Eli Drinkwitz standpoint, in his
- 3:45mind, he's probably thinking this and maybe he loves Mizzou
- 3:48and he's staying. But just go with me here.
- 3:51Put yourself in Eli Drinkwitz shoes.
- 3:55He's thinking if I go to Penn State, either AI succeed, I stay
- 4:02there for a long time, make a ton of money, maybe win a
- 4:06national championship. So there's a but here's B, Maybe
- 4:11he fails at Penn State. Maybe he is fired after three,
- 4:15Four Seasons, whatever it is. Eli Drinquitz, around age 40, in
- 4:20his brain he probably thinks, and he's thinking correctly,
- 4:26that if he fails at a Penn State or a Florida, whatever it is,
- 4:31there's a very good chance that he can then go back to a Mizzou
- 4:36type job. Not necessarily Mizzou.
- 4:39I'm not saying he's going back to Mizzou.
- 4:42He can go back to that Mizzou tier.
- 4:44There's lots of schools in those tiers and there's a lot of great
- 4:48jobs. I think about Michigan State.
- 4:51Michigan State can be a great job.
- 4:54Mark Dantonio took Michigan State to the College Football
- 4:57Playoff. You can make Michigan State
- 5:00every once in a while, a top ten, a top five team, just in
- 5:04the same way you can make Mizzou a top ten, top five team every
- 5:09once in a while, right? Every seven years, every 10
- 5:12years, whatever it is. Gary Pinkel did it back in 1314.
- 5:16Eli Drinkwitz, They were knocking on the door, what, two
- 5:19years ago when they beat Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
- 5:22We don't have to get into that. We've argued about that enough,
- 5:24but that's my point. My point is, Eli Drinkwitz
- 5:28should be thinking, this is how I would think.
- 5:31And Mizzou fans, I know you get mad at me every couple years,
- 5:34but put yourself in Eli Drinkwitz shoes.
- 5:38He's thinking, all right, I go to Florida or I go to Penn
- 5:42State. Whatever it is, I either succeed
- 5:45or 3-4 years from now I get fired.
- 5:48Huge buyout, but I'm only about 45.
- 5:51However old he is, I want to coach again.
- 5:54I can go back to a Mizzou type job and I'm talking about just
- 5:59name the jobs that are kind of like Mizzou.
- 6:02He's an Arkansas guy. He could go back to an Arkansas.
- 6:05He could go to a Michigan State type job.
- 6:08And I'm not saying Purdue is up there, but I'm just, I'm trying
- 6:12to think of, you know, Mississippi State, schools like
- 6:15that, not top tier. We're not talking about Ohio
- 6:19State, Penn State, Florida, LSU. That's the conversation he's in
- 6:24right now. But if he fails at a tier one
- 6:27job, certainly Eli Drankwitz will get more opportunities
- 6:31after that to go back to a Tier 2 or a Tier 3 job.
- 6:35And again, I'm not trying to get into that debate of is Mizzou
- 6:38Tier 2, Tier 3, whatever it is, I don't care.
- 6:41Mizzou can be a really good job, top 25, top 20, top 15, whatever
- 6:45it is, but they're not a blue blood.
- 6:48And that's my point. And I thought about Rich
- 6:50Rodriguez because I was in Michigan and I covered that
- 6:55coaching search because we covered the last game of Lloyd
- 7:00Carr, Lloyd Carr's last game, Capital One Bowl.
- 7:04This was 2008 Michigan. Michigan actually beat beat Tim
- 7:09Tebow's Florida team in that bowl game.
- 7:12That was Lloyd Carr's last game. They have the coaching search.
- 7:16They hire this hotshot spread offense guy, Rich Rodriguez out
- 7:20of West Virginia. He had West Virginia rolling.
- 7:23Everybody knows what happened at Michigan.
- 7:25Obviously, it was a colossal failure for Rich Rodriguez.
- 7:29And I looked it up, I don't even think he had a winning season in
- 7:32about three seasons. But what happened after that?
- 7:36Look, that was a colossal failure.
- 7:38As I said, Rich Rodriguez is able to then go coach at
- 7:42Arizona. And I'm not even saying, look,
- 7:44it didn't work out great there. He was there for a decent amount
- 7:47of time, but Arizona again is in that tier of a Mizzou.
- 7:52We can argue about who's better. I would say Mizzou is a better
- 7:54football job, but again, we're talking Power 4 type jobs that
- 7:59aren't blue bloods. Rich Rodriguez failed at
- 8:04Michigan after being hugely successful at West Virginia, was
- 8:08able to go then to Arizona. It worked out whatever the way
- 8:13it did. Then he did some kind of
- 8:15assistant coordinator. I think he was at Jacksonville
- 8:17State. Well, guess what, he's back at
- 8:18West Virginia right now. So and West Virginia is not
- 8:22having a great season right now. But my point is if you go from a
- 8:26Tier 2, Tier 3 job to a Tier 1, Michigan's a Tier 1, Penn
- 8:32State's a Tier 1, Florida's a Tier 1, and you fail there,
- 8:36you're going to get opportunities back at a Tier 2,
- 8:39Tier 3. Rich Rodriguez got those
- 8:43opportunities at Arizona and now he's back at West Virginia
- 8:46again, We're we're talking about similar type jobs to Mizzou.
- 8:50I would say Arizona, West Virginia, similar type jobs to
- 8:54Mizzou. That is where the narrative
- 8:57shouldn't just be like, oh, you stay at Mizzou, you can stay
- 9:00there forever. If I'm Eli Drinkwitz, don't you
- 9:04want the pressure also of the blue blood?
- 9:06And here's the other part I haven't mentioned.
- 9:08If you truly don't think you can win a national championship at
- 9:11Mizzou, which may be the case, then you got to take your shot
- 9:15at a blue blood. I think we all agree that Eli
- 9:18Drinkwitz could take Mizzou to the College Football Playoff in
- 9:22this 12 team format. Absolutely.
- 9:24If he doesn't think he has the resources, and I know they have
- 9:27good resources at Mizzou, I'm talking about top tier resources
- 9:30to win a national championship. He should leave.
- 9:34If he's really a candidate for Penn State or Florida, he goes
- 9:38there. He either succeeds or he fails,
- 9:40but he gets another opportunity at a Mizzou type job.
- 9:44There you go. I repeated myself a couple
- 9:47times, but hopefully you got the point.
- 9:49And thank you, Jeff Castle for tuning in.
- 9:53He says Good afternoon, Charlie, good afternoon, Jeff.
- 9:57OK, sticking with college football, I did a short on the
- 10:01channel talking about Ohio State, Penn State.
- 10:04I did watch basically that whole game last Saturday.
- 10:08Really good game in the first half, 1714 Buckeyes I believe.
- 10:12And then Ohio State just stomped on Penn State third quarter.
- 10:17They scored 21 and answered points.
- 10:20So what's the math? They're 3814 is the final.
- 10:24Ohio State is really good. Their schedule is pretty damn
- 10:28soft. Let's be real.
- 10:29They've only played one competitive fourth quarter.
- 10:32That was the first game of the season against Texas.
- 10:35You can make the argument that the game against Washington was
- 10:39competitive into the fourth quarter.
- 10:42Penn State was competitive for 1/2.
- 10:43But then Ohio State blew him out in the third quarter.
- 10:47And I just saw, I just saw a mock draft that had three
- 10:51Buckeyes in the top 8 or 9. You had Arvel Reese, Caleb Downs
- 10:58on the defensive side of the ball, you had Carnell Tate, wide
- 11:01receiver, all like top 8-9 picks.
- 11:03Obviously Jeremiah Smith is only a sophomore, so Ohio State super
- 11:07talented. I think they're deserving of
- 11:10being the best team, number one team in the country.
- 11:14But the schedule's pretty soft. We'll see what happens.
- 11:17I do think there's a lot though, to Ryan Day shortening the
- 11:20games. You've seen that narrative out
- 11:23there. I think it's true.
- 11:24It's very smart. Think about it like this.
- 11:27In the 12 team College Football Playoff era, if you get to your
- 11:32conference championship game, that's 13 games.
- 11:36And then if you get to the national championship game,
- 11:38depending on if you have a bye now, Ohio State right now would
- 11:40have a bye, but you could play what is that 17 games, more
- 11:46likely 16 if you have a bye there.
- 11:49But Ryan Day is trying to shorten the games, shorten the
- 11:53seasons, not to build up on injuries because this is no
- 11:57longer a 12/13/14 game season if you want to win the national
- 12:03championship. It was never 12, but I'm saying
- 12:05back in the day it could have been about a 1415 game season to
- 12:10win a national championship. Now it's a 16 or 17 game season
- 12:14to win a national championship, depending on the byes, depending
- 12:18on if you get to your conference championship game.
- 12:21So there you go. I think Ohio State's really
- 12:23good. The defense is rolling.
- 12:25Like I said, you got Arvel Reese.
- 12:27You have a a a great player there in the on the back end
- 12:31with Caleb Downs as well. The offense is off the charts.
- 12:36You have both coordinators being replaced.
- 12:39Matt Patricia looks like a better coordinator than last
- 12:43year with Jim Knowles. Julian saying the other day, 316
- 12:47some something yards, 4 touchdowns, no picks.
- 12:49Both receivers went off for like 5 or 6 catches and 1:25-ish.
- 12:54Each had at least one touchdown. But you also have to be tested
- 12:58if they play Indiana in the Big 10 championship game.
- 13:02That would be awesome. I'm excited for that.
- 13:03If it happens and then College Football Playoff, we shall see.
- 13:08OK, moving on from college football to the World Series.
- 13:12I know it ended whatever five days or so ago, but man, what a
- 13:17World Series. I was totally locked into the
- 13:21World Series, especially as it moved on and that Game 7, just
- 13:27heartbreak. I was rooting for the Blue Jays.
- 13:31But you just kept letting the Dodgers, as we say from Teddy
- 13:35KGB hanging around, hanging around.
- 13:39They kept letting the Dodgers hang around.
- 13:43You had first of all, the play where they they sub out Tommy
- 13:48Edmund and then Pai haste goes and makes that unbelievable
- 13:52catch. And I love Tommy Edmund, but
- 13:53Tommy Edmonds pretty short. He wasn't making that catch.
- 13:57That was a a World Series winning move by Dave Roberts to
- 14:02to sub out Tommy Edmond for Pahes.
- 14:05You had to play from Miguel Rojas making the play at home
- 14:09where otherwise the Blue Jays win the World Series.
- 14:12I mean, they were so close so many times when they didn't
- 14:16score in the inning. I'm talking about you kind of
- 14:20got the feeling, you kind of got the feeling the Dodgers were
- 14:22going to win it. And look, I don't dislike the
- 14:26Dodgers. I think the Dodgers actually
- 14:28have likable dudes on the team, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts,
- 14:33Shoi Otani, Tommy Edmond. But just the Dodgers have become
- 14:38the Yankees in terms of the spending, the evil empire.
- 14:41Again, I don't look at them the same way.
- 14:43I don't think they're evil, but they are the best team money can
- 14:46buy. They're deferring all this
- 14:48money. So I was rooting for the Blue
- 14:50Jays, but at the end of the day, to be the man, you got to beat
- 14:54the man and the Blue Jays had so many opportunities, so many
- 14:58close games. Also the the 18 inning game and
- 15:02the game before where you have the craziness going on with the
- 15:05ball being stuck in the the outfield fence underneath.
- 15:09Just so close. You can make the argument the
- 15:11Blue Jays were were essentially the better team in in the World
- 15:16Series. Shohei Otani went off,
- 15:18obviously, especially early on in the World Series, but man,
- 15:22that's one of those World Series you're never going to forget.
- 15:25You're never going to forget the opportunities you had.
- 15:28Kind of reminds me of the 2011 World Series.
- 15:30If you're the Rangers, you can just never, never forget about
- 15:35the opportunities, how close you were to winning the World
- 15:38Series. Nelson Cruz, if he's not out
- 15:41there, if he's subbed out, whoever the outfielder is better
- 15:45defensively, could probably catch David Freeze's triple.
- 15:48And maybe the Cardinals are never the World Series champs in
- 15:512011. But man, man, man, man.
- 15:55And then the other thing about the World Series, it got me
- 15:57thinking and I tweeted this, but it it puts aging into
- 16:01perspective because I was 11 years old watching Joe Carter
- 16:07hit the game-winning home run in 1993.
- 16:11I was a huge baseball fan growing up.
- 16:13So I remember all the video and you're seeing the the replays of
- 16:17Bill Mazeroski hitting the game-winning home run in 1960.
- 16:22Well, in 1993, when Joe Carter happens, I'm watching Bill
- 16:25Mazeroski. That's 33 years ago.
- 16:28That seemed like ancient time. It was crazy for me to think
- 16:33that an 11 year old right now in 2025 looks at Joe Carter, which
- 16:38was 32 years ago, in the same vain and time lapse that I
- 16:44looked at Bill Mazeroski, which back then was 33 years ago,
- 16:48right? 1993 to 1960, essentially the
- 16:50same time frame as 2025 to 1993. And it's just crazy to think
- 16:56that because when I'm growing up, Bill Mazeroski is 30 or so
- 17:03years ago, but then 30 years before that is Babe Ruth and all
- 17:07that. And if you're a kid now, 30
- 17:11years ago is Joe Carter. 30 years before that, which to me
- 17:15was Babe Ruth, is just Bill Mazeroski.
- 17:18And then the Babe Ruth days is even another 30 years before
- 17:21that. It's just crazy.
- 17:22It's kind of obvious, but it puts things in perspective.
- 17:27And we had the old grainy video of Bill Mazeroski.
- 17:31You watch Joe Carter. It's it's pretty good.
- 17:34It's pretty good in terms of video quality.
- 17:38And then 30 years from now, we'll probably be watching like
- 17:40freaking holograms and we'll see what happens this year and it'll
- 17:45look old because God even only knows what the technology will
- 17:49be like 30 years from now in 2055.
- 17:52But anyway, that just put things in perspective.
- 17:55It was kind of crazy for me to think that an 11 year old now,
- 17:58Joe Carter to them is what Bill Mazeroski was to me in 1960.
- 18:03Jeff Castle chimes in. I'm happy for Tommy.
- 18:08Yep. I was also rooting for the Blue
- 18:11Jays yet. Yeah, he was also rooting for
- 18:13the Blue Jays. But he likes the former
- 18:14Cardinal. Tommy Edmond.
- 18:16Thank you, Jeff. All right, for my Saint Louis
- 18:19area folks. All right, please hook up my
- 18:22sponsors. Triad Bank.
- 18:24You see the logo up there in the right hand corner.
- 18:26Best thing I ever did for my rental property business, taking
- 18:29all my commercial loans from a big National Bank that didn't
- 18:32care about me to a local bank, Triad Bank in Frontenac.
- 18:36They also have the Creve Core location, but it's Triad
- 18:38banking.com. My voice is cracking here.
- 18:42I don't know why. Maybe I'm I'm going back to my
- 18:441112 year old years of Joe Carter and I'm going through
- 18:47puberty again. But my guy Matthew Tobin hooks
- 18:50it up. Great customer service.
- 18:53I think I've had like 6 loans with them over the years.
- 18:55I think right now I have three. We have a line of credit.
- 18:58We have a rental property we just bought that.
- 19:01We got the loan with Triad Bank and then actually just paid one
- 19:05off. So right now we have 2.
- 19:07We have the line of credit off the house and that's how I
- 19:09started my rental property business was off that line of
- 19:12credit I got with Triad Bank. Triad banking.com can have a
- 19:17meeting with them next week. They're fantastic.
- 19:20And then Saint Louis equipment, Saint Louis Lawn care, Saint
- 19:24Louis Lawn Care, they just stopped cutting for the season.
- 19:28We got the winter coming up here.
- 19:30They still do leaves. Get your leaves removed.
- 19:33They do all kinds of landscaping.
- 19:34I got some Arbor Vita, got a big Juniper, got some boxwoods put
- 19:38in. But they also my guy Tim
- 19:40Jenkerson has Saint Louis equipment which is
- 19:43stlmowerrepair.com. Buy a mower, get your mower
- 19:46repaired, small engine stuff. They have all the best brands.
- 19:51I got a Husqvarna blower over there.
- 19:53I got a Crest battery operated trimmer.
- 19:55They don't have Crest brand anymore, but they have the big
- 19:57brands right and SCAG for the mowers and they got some
- 20:02specials going on because I just emailed with them the last
- 20:06couple days. So here we go.
- 20:08Winter items, OK, they sell bulk and bagged salt and ice melt.
- 20:14They're open 24 hours during snowstorms.
- 20:18They have 4 locations. By the way, the bulk salt can be
- 20:21delivered to you. This is Saint Louis Equipment
- 20:24stlmowerrepair.com. Bulk salt picked up at our 2
- 20:27salt locations. That's in Afton and O Fallon,
- 20:30MO, again, four locations. They also have the brand new
- 20:34location in Jefferson County in DeSoto, but they have new plow
- 20:37and Salter installations and you have pre season plow service.
- 20:43They have a deal for anybody watching this show or me on
- 20:46social media, mention you heard about it from Charlie Marlow.
- 20:50You get 25% off the pre season plow service.
- 20:56You got a plow folks. You got a plow.
- 20:59St. Louis equipment pre season plow
- 21:01service, 25% off. Mention you heard it from
- 21:05Charlie Marlow. There you go.
- 21:07Saint Louis equipment, Saint Louis lawn care, Triad bank,
- 21:11Love them all. We'll end the show there.
- 21:13We talked about college football.
- 21:15Eli Drinkwitz, should he stay? Should he go?
- 21:18If I'm him, I go see what happens at a Penn State or
- 21:21Florida. Fall back to another Mizzou like
- 21:24school if it doesn't work out. Ohio State, very good but
- 21:27untested World Series. Dang Blue Jays, you had it.
- 21:32And I'm feeling old. I'm feeling old that Joe Carter
- 21:36was when I was 11 and for kids now that are 11, Joe Carter was
- 21:41there. Bill Mazeroski makes you feel
- 21:43old and I'm only 43. All right, folks, thank you so
- 21:46much comment like subscribe. Jeff Castle, thanks for watching
- 21:49live. Love you all.
- 21:51Peace out.
