- 0:03You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:08On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:11to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:14what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17The sermon you're about to listen to comes from our summer
- 0:202025 sermon series, Life Together.
- 0:23In this series, we're looking at what the New Testament has to
- 0:26say about how we live together in Christian community.
- 0:29You can find more information about our church at
- 0:32fumccolleagueswith.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:39Today's scripture comes from the book of James, and as Jeremy
- 0:45mentioned before, the bulletin is just a suggestion.
- 0:52However, the scripture verses are verses 7 through 11.
- 0:58I think believe it goes to 18 in the bulletin, but we're going to
- 1:01go to 11 today, 7 to 11. James chapter 5.
- 1:09Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the
- 1:11Lord's return. Consider the farmers who
- 1:14patiently wait for the rains in the fall.
- 1:16In the spring, they eagerly look for the valuable harvest to
- 1:20ripen. You too must be patient.
- 1:23Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.
- 1:26Don't grumble about each other, brothers and sisters, or you
- 1:30will be judged. For look.
- 1:31The judge is standing at the door for examples of patience in
- 1:36suffering. Dear brothers and sisters, look
- 1:39at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
- 1:42We give great honor to those who endure under suffering.
- 1:46For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance.
- 1:50You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, because
- 1:53the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.
- 1:58This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:05Speak We are closing out our summer series Life Together,
- 2:10where we took a look at the character of Christian
- 2:13community. And if you would like to go
- 2:17deeper into this theme, there is a book called One Another by
- 2:22David Da Silva that is an excellent resource.
- 2:27And it made me question things that I assumed I knew growing up
- 2:30in church, but when contrasted against scripture, I needed to
- 2:35re evaluate some things. And so I think it's a great
- 2:39resource and potential great inspiration for others that
- 2:44would like to continue to go deeper into Scripture regarding
- 2:49the theme of this summer, just life together, the character of
- 2:54Christian community. And I believe our first
- 2:58introduction into any community is most likely going to be our
- 3:03family that we were born in and raised up by.
- 3:08But not all of our experiences with our families are the same.
- 3:12In one of my textbooks, it shares the unique story of a
- 3:17family that chose to adopt A daughter from China.
- 3:21It was already a family of four, and the parents had decided to
- 3:26adopt one more. The mother was the only one able
- 3:30to go over to China to pick up their new daughter, who we will
- 3:34call Liz. And it was a great connection
- 3:38from the very beginning. She bonded so well with the
- 3:42mother. They came back over to the
- 3:44States and Liz clung on to her new mother and didn't want the
- 3:51father or the siblings to have anything to do with her new
- 3:55mother. She would constantly push them
- 3:57away, tell the kids, that's your dad, this is my mom.
- 4:01And she would constantly scream, my mommy, my mommy, my mommy.
- 4:07And it was months and months of difficulty trying to work out
- 4:14this division within the family. And it came to a point where the
- 4:20kids were fighting over who could help mom with dinner.
- 4:23And Liz won the opportunity to cook with mother.
- 4:29And the other daughter said I don't like you, I don't want you
- 4:35to be my sister. And Liz agreed and shared the
- 4:39same sentiments. The mother burst into tears
- 4:44because of this division that seemed like it was
- 4:49unreconcilable. And after seeing their mother
- 4:53cry, they held hands and apologized, saying, I'm sorry, I
- 4:58do want to be your sister. But sometimes it's really hard.
- 5:04A lot of times within Christian Church culture, especially
- 5:08within the United States, we talk a lot about having a
- 5:12personal relationship with Jesus.
- 5:15Very, very important. He's not just an inspirational
- 5:20figure or a teacher that we can learn from.
- 5:24He should be the Lord of our lives.
- 5:27And if he is the Lord of your life, you are adopted as a child
- 5:32of God. But we aren't only adopted into
- 5:35a relationship with Jesus. We are adopted into community,
- 5:40adopted into the family of God. And families are complicated.
- 5:47Amen. Especially when our families go
- 5:50against what God intended our families to look like.
- 5:54I was raised as an only child, but I have 4 potentially 5 half
- 5:59siblings from 2 potentially 3 other women besides my mother.
- 6:05There was a whole mess going on in my family and I'm sure that
- 6:09when we read scriptures about being brothers and sisters,
- 6:14about being a family, we initially think of our
- 6:19experiences with our own brothers and sisters and our
- 6:22nuclear families. Even when we talk about church,
- 6:27it can get complicated. Who we consider to be brothers
- 6:31and sisters in Christ in the Big Sea Church isn't always so clear
- 6:36to us. I was wrestling a lot this week
- 6:39in preparation because I didn't know how we could even discuss
- 6:43the Scriptures and James when I know that we all hear different
- 6:50things when someone from the pulpit mentions brothers and
- 6:54sisters OR family or church. I hope through this series this
- 7:00summer we've been able to gain a better understanding of what God
- 7:04intends and expects of His church, what He expects of those
- 7:08he adopted before there were even church buildings.
- 7:12Paul was referring to the church as a gathering of believers.
- 7:17Sometimes people who give themselves the title of a church
- 7:21are not intending to be anything like God says He desires of His
- 7:26church. So it's hard to use one word,
- 7:29church, to describe such a spectrum of people and
- 7:33institutions and then expect them all to uphold or even be
- 7:38attempting to uphold what we're called to be as God's church in
- 7:42Scripture. As we go into these scriptures,
- 7:46I want to preface them with the reminder that they are truth.
- 7:50These words are what we all need to strive for within the church
- 7:55in order for us to fulfill God's will for us as His children.
- 8:00We also need to be aware of the humanity in the church here and
- 8:04in the global church that not everybody will be living up to
- 8:08God's expectations nor even have the intention of fulfilling His
- 8:13will. So the more that you draw closer
- 8:18to the Father and know Him for yourself and allow the Holy
- 8:23Spirit to give you discernment, the better you will be able to
- 8:26discern who is truly a part of the church.
- 8:30And that doesn't mean we get to discount anybody based off of
- 8:33worship styles, spiritual gifts that they may focus in on
- 8:38secondary theological statements or disagreements, or the
- 8:43decorations or traditions that different churches still uphold.
- 8:48But it does mean having in common with them the core of the
- 8:52gospel, the creeds that we all agree on, and that we
- 8:57individually need to personally know the heart of God.
- 9:02So when we get to know someone else in their heart, we will be
- 9:05able to see if it is aligning with the heart of God.
- 9:10So now that we've recognized our differences and expectations of
- 9:14family and church, we should also be reminded that the truth
- 9:18of Scripture should prevail over all.
- 9:21And before we go back into the chapter of James, I'm going to
- 9:26pray for us. If you would like to stretch and
- 9:28stand, you may want to do that, but you're welcome to stay
- 9:30seated. Lord, I just thank you so much
- 9:35for your word, for your faithful followers and for your Spirit
- 9:42providing your Scripture how you've wanted to reveal yourself
- 9:47to your people, to your church and ask that in this time truth
- 9:53would be offered from this pulpit, that Christ would be
- 9:56offered from this pulpit and that I would be put aside.
- 10:00I thank you and praise you for this family and ask that you
- 10:03would speak to us this morning in Jesus name, Amen.
- 10:09James chapter 5, if we start back at verse 7, says, dear
- 10:14brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord's
- 10:18return. Consider the farmers who
- 10:21patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring.
- 10:24They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen.
- 10:29I will let you know that I have a black thumb personally.
- 10:34It is not because my mother's maiden name was black.
- 10:37It is because I've killed every plant that I've ever tried to
- 10:41take care of, which is only two. I learned very quickly, not my
- 10:46gifting, but I know that many of you garden and I have reaped the
- 10:50benefits of those delicious Jersey tomatoes, and therefore I
- 10:54thank you. But I learned most about the
- 10:58life of farming in my time in La Palmia, Mexico, where the main
- 11:03economy is stimulated by the growing, harvesting and selling
- 11:09of 14 types of oranges and three types of limes.
- 11:13And part of the reason why we have a sponsored children's
- 11:16project is because they don't want to pay for the schooling
- 11:20for the kids, because the time in which the schooling fees and
- 11:25the school supplies are needed is right before harvest time.
- 11:28And so they're still living off the money that was collected the
- 11:32year before. And so they are very eager for
- 11:36that valuable harvest. It affects every financial
- 11:39decision in those last months leading up to it.
- 11:44And so we are called to be patient in this Scripture.
- 11:48How many of you have prayed for patience?
- 11:51How many of you have regretted praying for patience?
- 11:55Most of the hands, right? We are to be eager for the
- 12:00coming of the Lord, which is why it's calling us to be patient.
- 12:03Our decisions now should be in preparation for that harvest.
- 12:08We should be planting seeds, watering seeds, and trusting God
- 12:13to make them grow. The Lord's coming is the harvest
- 12:17of all of these things. And if this is too much plant
- 12:21talk for some, let me clarify. When the Lord returns, we know
- 12:26it will lead to the end of death, sorrow, crying, and pain.
- 12:32We also know that there will be judgement for those who have not
- 12:36repented of their sins and been redeemed by the blood of Christ.
- 12:41So our eagerness for the Lord's coming shouldn't only be about
- 12:46us being fully in the presence of God or the end of death and
- 12:51suffering. It should also be an eagerness
- 12:54to share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ,
- 12:59to prepare for the harvest of souls.
- 13:02We are called to plant seeds, to share God's, to share God with
- 13:08others through our words and actions.
- 13:11And I'm not saying you get to pick your favorite of the two.
- 13:15The more we walk with the Lord, the more all of our words and
- 13:19actions should point ourselves to the Lord, point others within
- 13:23the church to the Lord, and point those outside of the
- 13:27church to the Lord so that he may be glorified.
- 13:32James 58 continues. You must be patient, take
- 13:36courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.
- 13:40If that is our responsibility to be patient for the Lord's
- 13:43return, then this family we've been adopted into happens to be
- 13:49a missionary family. When we come to our family
- 13:53gatherings, we are right now. We don't show up simply to be in
- 13:58each other's presence hoping that the pastor says something
- 14:02inspirational or can be comforted by the music of the
- 14:05worship team. This isn't golf.
- 14:08We do not just watch one person participate while we stay quiet
- 14:13and then we get loud when we're told we're allowed to be loud.
- 14:17This is when God's children come together before our Heavenly
- 14:20Father to worship Him, to hear His Word, to take a pause from
- 14:26the world and receive what He has prepared for us, reminding
- 14:30ourselves of what our family's mission is.
- 14:34When we leave, we are not a passive family, but a family on
- 14:39mission. And that mission is that God
- 14:41would be glorified. And in order for God to be
- 14:45glorified, His children need to be doing His will.
- 14:49We need to be united as a family, not just in this
- 14:52congregation, but as the global church.
- 14:56This is not only the desire of my heart, it was the desire of
- 15:01Jesus the night he was arrested in John 17, starting in verse
- 15:0620, he prays. My prayer is not for them alone,
- 15:10referring to the apostles. I pray also for those who will
- 15:14believe in Me through their message that all of them may be
- 15:19one Father, just as you are in me and I am in You, may they
- 15:26also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent
- 15:30Me. For the world to believe that
- 15:34God sent Jesus, we need to be 1 together in the Lord.
- 15:41So when you sit through all those church meetings about how
- 15:44we can get the gospel out to the world, it seems to me that step
- 15:49one is B1 in the Lord. I'm not saying we all need to be
- 15:55on the same page and agree on everything.
- 15:57And if we don't like something, we're not allowed to speak our
- 16:00voice. But we should all strive to be
- 16:04more like Jesus Christ. And the more we take His Word as
- 16:08the most important instruction for the time God has given us on
- 16:13earth before the harvest, the more we realize we cannot truly
- 16:18fulfill His will alone. We can only do it together, in
- 16:22community. A community as close as the
- 16:26relationship between God the Father and God the Son.
- 16:31And as we individually seek the desire of God's will, we will
- 16:36become more aligned with God's heart and more unified in our
- 16:40collective will and desires. Now, what does this life look
- 16:46like? Well, part of it is described
- 16:50here in our Scripture this morning.
- 16:52If Phil could put up the slide. And James, there we go grumble
- 16:59about each other brothers and sisters.
- 17:01Do it quietly with your neighbor in the back of the sanctuary.
- 17:05Judge freely in the church parking lot for you are judge
- 17:10and jury think we have the wrong translation If you want to go to
- 17:16the next one, never trust the slides.
- 17:20Read your Bibles. That's the extra lesson today,
- 17:24verse 9. Don't grumble about each other,
- 17:28brothers and sisters, or you will be judged for look.
- 17:33The judge is standing at the door.
- 17:37It can be really easy, even inside the church, to grumble
- 17:42whether it's about an outfit someone chose to wear to church,
- 17:46a hymn played on guitar instead of the organ, or about Pastor
- 17:50Jeremy trying and succeeding to be funny by putting up a fake
- 17:54Bible verse. Our grumbling, according to
- 17:59scripture, will lead us to be judged by God, and we don't like
- 18:04being judged at all. I don't know about you, but I
- 18:08would be terrified to come before God, to be judged without
- 18:14the righteousness of Christ going before me.
- 18:19One of the scriptures from our prayer sessions this past month
- 18:23was in Isaiah 43 where God challenges His people by saying
- 18:28review the past for me. Let us argue the matter
- 18:32together. State the case for your
- 18:34innocence. I don't believe any of us are
- 18:39arrogant enough or prideful enough to truly believe we could
- 18:44go before God the Father and plead the case for our innocence
- 18:49based solely on our own actions. Well, Pastor Jeremy, you just
- 18:54took away the fun of going to church if I'm not allowed to
- 18:57grumble towards my neighbor. For that, I apologize and I
- 19:03would like to point us to something better.
- 19:07If we have an issue with someone, their actions, or their
- 19:11words within the body, it should hopefully be for one of two
- 19:16reasons. One, you don't believe that what
- 19:20they are doing is what God desires for their life, that it
- 19:24is sinful and it is causing separation between them and God.
- 19:30Whether it's the way they speak about others or sinful
- 19:33lifestyles they have outside of the church that you're aware of.
- 19:37We should, out of love for them, want to turn them away from
- 19:42that. If that's the case, we are
- 19:44called to gently bring a brother or sister back onto the path,
- 19:50whispering to our neighbor that someone's dressed immodestly
- 19:53Will Walker doesn't help them walk in the ways of the Lord.
- 19:59Or maybe they've sinned against you specifically.
- 20:04They've done you dirty, right? Luckily, Jesus gives us
- 20:08practical advice on what to do when someone sins against us.
- 20:14Matthew 18 starting in verse 15 says if your brother or sister
- 20:19sins, go and point out their fault.
- 20:22Just between the two of you, just between the two of you,
- 20:27just making sure the mic works. If they listen to you, you have
- 20:33won them over. But if they will not listen,
- 20:36take one or two others along so that every matter may be
- 20:40established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
- 20:44If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church.
- 20:48And if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them
- 20:52as you would a Pagan or a tax collector.
- 20:57It can be really intimidating to try and have these conversations
- 21:02and people always worry about it getting to that third part where
- 21:06it goes before the church doesn't go great and you are
- 21:09treated like a Pagan or tax collector.
- 21:12But from all the conflicts I've witnessed within the church,
- 21:15people that do the first step correctly within the church
- 21:20don't end up at the last step. David, who wrote the book I'd
- 21:25mentioned earlier one another says this.
- 21:29The context of being a family sets the goal for confrontation
- 21:34always as the restoration of the relationship and of peace and
- 21:40harmony within the family. The important step of talking to
- 21:45the brother or sister whom you believe to have sinned against
- 21:48you gives you to the possibility of identifying A
- 21:52misunderstanding. That's usually the case and thus
- 21:56repairing the damage or of exchanging needed apologies and
- 22:01forgiveness. See Scott's sermon from about
- 22:04six weeks ago. And this is just grumbling
- 22:08within the family of believers. There's a lot to grumble about
- 22:13when it comes to what's going on in the world.
- 22:16I was going to say shout things out, but I don't want to get in
- 22:19trouble here. Scott's going to come back.
- 22:24There's a lot to grumble about when we look out into the world,
- 22:28a world that is so far from God that it breaks his heart, and it
- 22:33should break our hearts as well. When we look out into the world,
- 22:38we should eagerly desire Him to come and reconcile all things to
- 22:44himself. And that's the hard part, being
- 22:47patient in the suffering, whether it's patient in our own
- 22:51suffering or being patient with a suffering that we witness.
- 22:57And our Scripture continues in verse 10 for examples of
- 23:01patience and suffering. Dear brothers and sisters, look
- 23:05at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
- 23:08We give great honour to those who endure suffering.
- 23:12For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance.
- 23:16You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the
- 23:20Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.
- 23:25It talks about Joe being a man of great endurance.
- 23:29But when you read the questions that Job and his friends ask
- 23:33for, chapters and chapters and chapters and chapters, questions
- 23:39about God's goodness, God's judgment, and how God interacts
- 23:45with the world, we see that this great man of endurance also
- 23:50asked the question why about a variety of things.
- 23:55And it's OK to ask why. When we look around ourselves,
- 23:59we can find ourselves asking the same thing.
- 24:03Lord, why are you allowing this to happen in the world?
- 24:07Lord, why would you let your church stray so far from what I
- 24:12read in Scripture? When we ask why, we are
- 24:17acknowledging the limitations of our own understanding and that's
- 24:21where our faith comes in, that we believe God when He says as
- 24:27the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher
- 24:31than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
- 24:35We know His ways are good because He promises that His He
- 24:39is working all things for the good of those that love Him
- 24:43according to the purpose of His will.
- 24:47One of my favorite hymns growing up.
- 24:50Trust and obey, for there's no other way.
- 24:56Trusting God's word and His promises.
- 25:00Trusting His plan for His Church and obeying what He calls His
- 25:06children to do to the best of our ability, with the power of
- 25:10the Holy Spirit within us, what has He called us to do?
- 25:17Be patient for His return. Prepare for the harvest.
- 25:23Do not grumble amongst ourselves.
- 25:27Be one with Him and each other so that the world will know that
- 25:33God loves the world so much that He sent His Son on a cross to
- 25:40die for our sins so that we would not perish but have
- 25:45eternal life with Him. Let us pray.
- 25:53Lord, I just ask that you would strip away from us anything that
- 25:58is causing division amongst amongst your children.
- 26:04That when we gather, we see family, we see brothers and
- 26:07sisters in Christ. That it would be holy, unlike
- 26:13any social clubs or other things within the world.
- 26:16That people would see Your spirit at work within us
- 26:19separately as we walk with You and especially as a collective.
- 26:25That even in trying times, the world can see that we are able
- 26:29to love amongst differences, that we are able to care for,
- 26:34that we are able to forgive and reconcile.
- 26:39That we would be a reflection of you inside your church, outside
- 26:45of your church, Lord. And that we would use every
- 26:49opportunity that you give us before the harvest to be
- 26:53planting seeds, watering seeds, and trusting You to make them
- 26:58grow. That we would trust You with all
- 27:01the things that we don't understand going on in the world
- 27:05and we would be faithful with what You had entrusted to us.
- 27:09Your children, we love you and we praise you this morning.
- 27:14Jesus name Amen.
