- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome to the Cornish Witch podcast.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Freya, a witch who lives in Cornwall, but who isn't a born and bred Cornish maid.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Firstly, I just want to say, I'm sorry, apologies for getting this episode out to you later than planned.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: As some of you might know, if you follow me on Instagram, I was at Witch Festival over the weekend doing lots of podcast interviews, which was great.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So I was very busy, but also I'm I don't know, I think after like two months off, I'm kind of struggling to get back into the swing of things with the podcast.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I'm just um sort of trying to get back into the groove of it, really.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: So please bear with me.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Uh it's not ideal, I know, but you will be getting two episodes from me this week.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: So this episode today, and then Thursday or Friday, you will have another episode from me, which will be myself and Jenna, the Alchemy Witch, who was featured on the show earlier in the year.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And we shall be having a little Halloween episode discussing and reading through some Cornish ghost stories.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So that will be fun to listen to.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I am sorry.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: I feel like I'm a bit of a work in progress at the moment, just trying to get back into the groove.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So please bear with me.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: It will get better.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: I've got loads of stuff coming up for the podcast, which is really exciting.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And the Witch Festival podcast will be out next week as well, which was so much fun.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: But yeah, without any further ado, I shall let you listen to the second part of this episode from the cult to the craft with the wonderful Sandy.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And I hope you enjoy listening to the rest of her incredible story.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: After Mama died, and I came back, came back here to Lawson.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Poor husband, bless his heart, had to move us because we got the keys right before I flew out.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Oh yes, yeah.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: I was gone for 10 days, and he had to pack us up and move us out of an apartment that we had lived in, a flat that we had lived in, a large flat.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: That flat was probably the size of this building.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Um he had to move us out of that flat with the dog into a house.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: There's still shit missing.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Bless him.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: I ain't even mad about it anymore.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but when I came back, my whole world was in turmoil.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, I mean, bless him.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: He did everything he could, but you know, he couldn't unpack and put it all together or, you know, and I think I spent the first I think I spent the rest of June just not giving a shit.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: And just I spent as much time as I could outside with the birds and the bees.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Um figuring out my ground.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: And putting my toes in grass.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And I couldn't even and and it makes me sad now because my sister and I, we we had some COVID was really hard on her.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: She had cared for my mother three bodies.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: And it was hard on her both physically and mentally.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: She struggles with that anyway, because like every other member of my family, we've either got bipolar manic depressive disorder or we have EDHD.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: I'd even go to so far as to say that there's possibly a touch of uh the autistic nature in there as well, somewhere on that scale, which I have to tell my children all the time.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: A, you're welcome, and B, I'm sorry.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: In that order, though, in that order.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, I think that and we had some harsh words after mama's funeral.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And I didn't had to go, I I went very internal, and and you know, we kissed and made up before I left, and you know, so forth and so on, but there was a lot with that where I had to do a lot of self-evaluating and reflecting on how I would carry forward and how to take back my sense of self.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And because I think when you lose a parent, and then the bizarre thing about it is I had heard through the grapevine, I did not have contact with my biological father.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: I hadn't had contact with him since uh since probably my late 20s early.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Um he was just he was a good time Charlie.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: And he had been married five times.
- 5:40unknown: Yeah.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: He was he was the guy who had a port in every store.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Um and I was the only child he ever had, but he was one of those that he just didn't know how to relate to me as a person.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: And so we just yeah, and I I was constantly, I think I spent most of my life attempting to seek both of their approving.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: And then not understanding, because my mother uh I could I could probably write a novel just about her trauma, never mind my own or the trauma that she was introduced to because she chose to marry my biological father and so forth and so on.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Um that's a whole nother story in and of itself.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: But he he got cancer and he and he had repeated bouts with it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: He and my uncle Bob and his his older brother, so his brother's older than him by about 10 years.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: And um they were kind of they kind of him and his brother, they kind of existed like a unit.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: They were very much um almost like Irish twins, yeah, to a degree.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Um so they both wound up having cancer at the end, and I lost them about a month apart, but I lost my mama in June of that year, and I turned around and I lost my biological father in August.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: So I went from having a group of people that I may not have necessarily had contact with, but that I considered my people having nothing because I lost my mama, I still got my stepdaddy and I love him.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Um he raised me and he's a good he's a good father.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: But I lost my biological father, and then I lost his brother and then I turned around and I lost my mother.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Um and I I just went from feeling like I had a tribe to having a trauma.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Like someone just pulled the rope from under your head.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I had to navigate that and really go inward and understand what it meant to basically be an orphan from from a bloodline.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: And then to come to terms with the fact that I've always told my children that family is not what flows in your veins.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Family is what you make it, family is who you choose to do it in your life, for better or for worse.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: So I think that truly was the beginning of those doors opening up and me actively pursuing why I felt the way I felt and why I felt that way whole life, you know, and and what manifestation really was in my life, as well as what is practice, what is you know who who I am in the grand scheme of things, and and where my power is, you know.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Um have you heard of that that really old common saying, Oh, blood is thicker than water?
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Oh god, yes.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: So I recently heard, and I don't know if it's true, I really hope it is, and if it is true, someone out there can please let me know, like the referencing in the source and where it's from.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: But I heard that saying is wrong and it's been cut.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: And the actual saying is um, the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yes.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Um and that's biblical.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, and it is cut.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Um but I was like, oh, that what that's better.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like but but I but I think I think also that um I think the beautiful part about that is that the water of the wound is where all the power lies.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: And it's the place and I and I think it's the reason why inherently, and I find this regularly, men are afraid of women who understand that as a power.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Um and they don't even know why they're afraid.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: And I think what it comes down to is on an instinctual level, yes, men are taught to provide, but they're also taught how to destroy.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Women are not, we're not taught how to destroy, we're taught how to build.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: We are the builders of our builders of our spiritual universe, we are the builders of everything as we move forward, and it's the reason why women get called um intimidating or um aggressive.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Uh my whole life I've been called.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: And and they we have gone where they can never go.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Childbirth in and of itself is a spiritual activity.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's the making.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: And I don't know how to really put it into words, in the sense that we have been places and seen things and done things that they can never take from us, that they can never touch.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: So we we carry we carry that um genetic heritage through our XX chromosomes.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Like your mother will have what has would have had your DNA and all of your siblings' DNA and her and your grandmother's DNA.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, your grandmother would have been your would have you would have been in her an egg in her womb.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: But but men don't have that lineage like we do.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: But that means when a woman, if a woman only has sons, then her her lineage ends because she's not gonna carry it.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I do think the greatest blessing in my life has been the fact that I have been lucky enough to have both.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: You know, I have I have a beautiful daughter who has two beautiful children.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: I have a beautiful son who's got five children, and my son has a glorious partner who I absolutely love and adore, um, who they have brought life into the world with.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Um and I find it really interesting because I've watched Taylor blossom and I've watched my daughter blossom as well, and my Nicole, into really strong women.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: And I think they're I think they're I think they're finding their power, yeah, faster than I did.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm I'm still finding my power, I'm still finding my place and understanding my place and and how I can you know provide for for myself spiritually and my community.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Um let's let's talk about that a little bit more because we've talked about you you're going you've come from the cult to the craft.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: How did you and you and you've talked about your you know your spiritual awakening, you know, around the time that you lost your mum, but also you've had those experiences with your stepmom who was really validating Judy when you were younger when you had those paranormal experiences.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And how is your craft looking these like these days?
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: You think you're still discovering it and you're still finding it.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And I think in a way, we all are.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: We you know, it never stops.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: Like I I tell everybody, and I'm a firm believer in this, every day is a school day.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I'm 56, I'll be 57 next year.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and I I do believe that you if you're not uncomfortable, you're not growing, and if you're not growing, you're stagnating, you're standing still, and you can't move forward.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Um but for me, I think I think where so for me the craft began in that time of losing my mother.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Like if I were to put a if I were to attach a label, I would say that's when the craft began to call me as as an existential activity or a problem.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Um but I would say that prior to that I have explored many things.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: I've always been I'm an active learner of other practice.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And I think I was waiting.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: I've always had a very spiritual internal compass.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And I and there have been many things throughout the years that have spoken to me, but very few have ever called to me.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: So I've always made sure to educate myself, whether it was Hindi practice or or Buddhist practice.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: And I would have to say that for many years I would have called myself a Buddhist um to a degree.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: The problem is, is I've got way too deep a violent streak to maintain a Buddhist um behavior.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: I think the craft, the craft takes care of that for me.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: Um but but that being said, I think I think even before I was capable of recognizing that the craft was a thing, um, or even giving and and even now I hesitate to to call what I do a practice or the craft.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Or to even say that I'm a witch.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: And I think I think that goes back to what you and I were talking earlier about imposter syndrome and feeling that's also maybe to do with the witch wound and your your your your your upbringing within the Mormon church.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: I think and it makes it really, really difficult, yeah, um, to reconcile myself to a complete because everything that I and I do believe it, I do, I have a I have a deep faith in the power of her that has no name.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Me, she has every name, she has your name, she has my name.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: The universe is feminine by design.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: You know, whether it's Gaia or uh Hecate or or Aphrodite or you know, and all of these feminine perspectives that we have given a face to, they are all product of that same divine womb.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: We are all stardust, and and the science in me has a tendency to draw back to that, to the fact that our particles, we are all the products of a star.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: We are all parts of our universe.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: But then I have to remind myself, we still do not know how our universe was created.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: And if you look at the universe and you look at the shape of the universe, it looks an awful lot like a womb to me.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Um, and so I I really, really do strongly believe wholeheartedly in the divine feminine.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's kind of where that has even when I had when I and I did for probably about four years of my life, I labeled myself as a Buddhist.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: And during those four years, I found myself being drawn, is my practice was primarily Tibet Buddhism, and I found myself um being drawn towards the female aspects of the Buddhist culture, which is the Green Tara, and other female Buddhist goddesses that are not, they're on the same level as the Buddha himself.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: And it was um, because in Tibetan Buddhism, it is divine.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Um, whereas in a lot of other Buddhist practice, it is considered philosophy only.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Um, and so as I've moved forward in my life, I have constantly come back to the divine feminine, yeah, but it's only been since I opened myself up to recognizing that, that I've been able to look through my own history and see where the divine feminine has shaped me and moved me forward.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: Nothing happens by accident.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: If I had taken one step differently, if I had made one different decision, if I had moved, then then our fates would not have put me here having this conversation.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'd be somewhere else.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: Different, you know?
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Um and maybe not as self-aware.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: I think I think that self-awareness comes with a lot of doubt and a lot of mental hardship in in because we've been taught as women to not make waves and to not say things that make other people uncomfortable or to not put ourselves out there in a way that would upside the attention, yeah, or make people look at us and and I tell everybody, I don't I I don't necessarily call myself a witch, but I do not call myself normal.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: I'm not normal.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: I would never I I don't trust normal people.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: I find that they they scare me.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Normal people what what we classify in to this day and age as normal scares a hell out of it.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Um and I think that we've put too much stock in things that we can see and touch and have gotten away from how to feel and how to be one with ourselves and with our own internal practice, so to speak.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: And I think the thing it's done for me the most is uh it's allowed me to be divine in others, yeah, even when they can't see it themselves.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: And I think that's one of the things I love the most about it.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Um but every day is a school day.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: I spend I make sure that every day I'm studying something that I think will help me.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: So you've you've brought in a couple of books on reasons and a and a little grimoire or book of shadows or something that you have there.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I and I'm gonna give credit to the Mormon church on this one.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I've been keeping a grimoire.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: I was um every day, every day of my life.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: So did my mama, and believe it or not, so did my grandmother.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Um, but she was a world traveler, she did that for herself.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Um, and everything goes in here, whether I'm Writing poetry or writing down a recipe.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: It all goes in anything I learn, like you know, I'll give you an example.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: Let's see what yesterday.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: And I'm pretty prolific.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: You got beautiful handwriting.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, thank you.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I couldn't I could never like my handwriting's awful.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: That is that's just so pretty.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, thank you.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: I am well practiced.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: So let's see.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: So uh on the 13th of September, I because I do try to make sure that um right now I am teaching myself the finer points of tarot.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Um and so I do a card pull for myself every day with intention.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Um and on the 30th of September, Empress.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: So I write down when when I pull a card, I I write down my intention was uh, you know, I have a nice conversation with with myself and and with at my altar.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: I'm at my altar every morning.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Um it's not very large altars, it's a little thing, but um and so I wrote down my impressions the minute I pulled the card, and that was um she, Crome, Daya, how that makes me feel, so forth and so on.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: And then um I'm also studying I'm studying as many aspects as as I can fit into my tiny little brain.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: So I also I picked up um Malachi off of my altar um and put it in my pocket, um, and then did a did my research throughout the day to you know find what what the the universe's intentions are for that particular stone and so on.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Um and what I've what I took from that was it gives me a lovely cloak of invisibility during confrontations.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Um, and I was really, you know, so so it is, it is my grimoire in the sense that it's the thing I go back to.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, whether I'm writing poetry or, you know, putting down um what I'm what I'm reading, you know, what I'm what I'm bringing into my realm and what I'm putting back out, you know, if I have a conversation with my children, if anything's upsetting me, you know, these are the things that I keep.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Um for example, what um two rooks and a jack doll pulled up for breakfast.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: No, there's a joke in there somewhere, and then one lone Robin showed up.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: So it's it's about for me, it's about my intentions.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: I was also in that same day, I wrote down like how I'm going to set my altar for the week.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Um I gonna write a spell this week?
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: There was a question mark there, and how to take action, you know.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: So it's almost like giving myself uh a spiritual tour list, yeah.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: As well as, you know, and then in the in the same in the same pages, like I'm writing down, so for example, I have a list here of what our moon phases are for this year for for October.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: Like, and you know, what candles would be good and what because I'm huge into my herb garden.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: That is my that is my space.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: So we had a fence that got blown down, and I've been fussing about getting this fence replaced forever.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: And up the side of our garden is my herb bed, and it's it's a beautiful herb bed.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: It's uh I don't eat it very often, though I should, but it's just chucka with rosemary and lemon balm and lavender, lavender.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Well, actually, I've got lavender beds all across the front of my garden.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Um, but this one has got all my oregano and my rosemary and all of my everyday intense herbs that are hardy growers, right?
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: They're all in this bed going up the back of the house.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: And the that was the fence that had to be replaced.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: And I had fussed, I'd gone to Miller's to try to get them to get the landlord up.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Well, he didn't call me or talk to me about it, and I came home and he had torn up my entire five years.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: No, yes, ma'am.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: That's so disrespectful.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, I was so angry.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: I was so beside myself, and it took everything in I had my power to cuss this man up one side and down the other, and not to completely cause some bad juju to come down on my ground because I was that upset.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Um, you don't mess with the witch, but you do not mess with a with a witch's garden.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, I was so beyond.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: I was beyond.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: Um so I had to figure out real quick what I could salvage them because I can't, I literally walked home from work.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Alex and I walk home every day.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: And the first thing I do, I have rosemary at the front and the back gate.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: So the first thing I do as I'm walking in is I touch on the plants.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Immune with my plants every day.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Um and so uh, and I do have lavender up the up the stairwell as well.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: Okay, because our house is it's built on a hill like this.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: So we've got this little set of steps, and there's a little bed right here, and then there's our back gate, and you walk down, and then my bed goes all the way down the steps to the back of the house.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Um so rosemary, I opened the gate, and there they are.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: There is nothing but dirt and concrete and cut wood, and I just was like, everything in my spirit.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, I saw myself.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Not Sandy.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: Now, do not choose violence.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Now is the time you need to choose some emotional peace.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: So I just looked at him and he like that.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Is one of my biggest flaws.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: I have face like a spaying task.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: If I am not happy with you, everybody within a hundred mile radius knows.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: And it's not because I spoke a word, it's because you saw my face.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Um, and I just looked it up and I was like, well, I'm gonna use foul leg.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: I said, Are you fucking kidding me?
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: I was like, I didn't know you were coming today.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: And he just looked at me and he was like, uh uh, uh I was like, well, okay.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: And I just I walked away.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: The next day, bless his little oh, because he's an old farmer, bless him.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: But his name's Mo.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: He's a lovely man, dog.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: And he just did he just didn't know, to be fair.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: And he had brought some little farmhand with him to do this fence.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it wasn't even a professional job.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: In fact, this is this is the most wonky fence you've ever seen.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: It's hilarious.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Um I know, sitting at the top of the gate, right inside on the dirt patch they left me was four bags of soil and six tomato plants because he didn't know what the fuck to do.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: So he knew.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Oh blast.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, so I've spent I've spent the last um I've spent all this summer just getting it all back.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: And I tell you what, praise to the mother for this one because nature will find a way and the mother will find a way.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: And I tell you what, I've got everything came back.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: The only thing that didn't come back was my mother rosemary, which was almost like to be fair, it was almost like a tree, but I just refused to cut it back.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Um, so that had to be taken out, but uh I've got everything has come back in spades.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: All my oreganoes, all my uh yeah, I had to spend a pretty penny to like get it all back to where it needs to be as far.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: But a lot of it just came back from the soil being tilled up and like all of my oreganos and my mushrooms and all of that, they just they because I I always let everything seed down.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: I don't cut anything back until after everything's gone to seed.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: So it all all of it, um, all my different types of chives and my sage, that's the one that got me the most.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: And getting a sage plant to stay grown is a bit of a a bit of a task.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: Um I never really took my herbs on board when it came to the craft until until I actually started to make uh internal correlations and thought processes in regards to to the craft.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: Um as far as like the different faces of the goddess and yeah and how we can use things in our natural environment to to apply that to ourselves.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Um for me it it was I've I suffer with a couple of different things.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: I have I have issues with my heart as well as um I I have fibromyalgia.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Um and so keeping myself healthy has become a huge thing for me, especially since mama passed, because here's the thing no woman in my family has made it past the age of 70.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: Wow, not a single one.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Gosh, yeah, my my ancestors uh what are you doing?
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, they kick it quick.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Um both my grandmothers uh left their mortal coil uh around the age of 67.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: My grandmother was 69, she died on June the 6th, her birthday was July 5th.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so also there's that rebellious aspect of my nature that says I will do whatever it takes to make sure I make it past that.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that and I have seven beautiful grandchildren.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I got shit to do.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: You want to be around for that.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: I wanna be around, you know.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: I gotta make sure that, you know, they they know that they've got somebody they can turn to and count on.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: And oh, and that means that I need to be not just physically and mentally stable, but healthy.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and so yeah, so that's where that's where uh the the practice came in.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: So I've m most of what I have right now is self-taught.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Um This book is called the This one's called The Lost Book of Herbal Remedies, and this is one of the newest ones I've gotten.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Um it's by a lovely lady named Nicole Apel.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say this incorrectly, and my apologies.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: Um, Nicole Apelion.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: Sounds right to me.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Who has a PhD.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: And what's beautiful about this book is that I've been able to go through it and you can they do it by plant.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: So for example, I can mark out like um all the best aspects of or okay, I'm gonna say it my way, of oregano.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you say it's fine.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna go glad oregano in in the earshot.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: But not only does it like help with like teaching you about infusions and tinctures and teas and stuff like that, but it gives you background of plants where they're where it's most likely it helps you with the foraging aspects of stuff like that, which really brings a lot to the table for me.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: No, I love that it has pictures in it.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: That's a big thing to me in books.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: And it um yeah, because um, and I think it goes back to that imposter syndrome where I'm just I I get a bit nervous about going to forage out because we're not taught that.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: From small children, we are taught that you go to the grocery store to get your shit.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't you don't go out into your garden.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: The thing is, I I make dandelion tea now.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I I I had no idea dandelion was so good for you up until about maybe eight, nine years ago.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: I always taught I was just a weed.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: I'm like, it is the most powerful flower in your garden.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Like it's incredible.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: No, like I I'm I get called a conspiracy theorist quite regularly, but it's the reason why I am so anti-corporate.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: And one of my first bugbears was Monsanto.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: You know who Monsanto is.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: So Monsanto is um a corporation, it's a billion-dollar corporation that uh makes pesticides and fertilizers.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: They are the creator of Roundup, which is the destroyer of all things dandelion.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the weed killer.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, weed killer that we have been taught since we came out of the womb that dandelions were bad.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: They ruin your garment.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're a pest.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: They're a pet.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: What it really is is dandelion is a natural heart problem preventative.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: It is one of like, I I don't know why Big Pharma isn't trying to get us because they don't want us to do it for ourselves.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it's because it's in abundance, yeah.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: That's not gonna make them any money.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: Santos, so they're big on weed killer, fertilizer, and GMO, right?
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: So to me, they are they are the enemy.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: I just like do you know, yeah, every time saying with fertilizer, it's like I use my period blood for my plants, and let me tell you, it's the best thing ever.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: They thrive, they it's full of stem cells and nutrients, but how many plants I have brought back from like near death near death because I just put a few drops in it, like, and then like watered it.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: It is, and I mean, that missing a trick when it comes to fertilization.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, obviously, it it it's a bodily food.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: We've got to be careful, but you know, but you know, I mean, let's face it, a hundred years ago, you'd have been freaking free-bleeding into the earth, yeah, yeah.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: It's that thing where what that does is that introduces to the masculine eye, that introduces the mystery that they cannot and choose not to understand.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: And so, like, you might as well, like, if you'd have told somebody 200 years ago that you were putting in blood in your plants to give them better nutrition, you'd have been burned at stake.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: You know, and it just it blows my mind how even when it comes to divine feminine and equality versus revenge.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Um I feel like I feel that one of the hardest parts is not just rectifying with that because we are the creators of all things male as well.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: It wouldn't exist if it wasn't for us.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Like we all start off in the way and female.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: And and so I mean, I'm really lucky.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: My husband he's an he's an active feminist.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: And uh and I'm so grateful.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Um but uh you know you can always tell the minute somebody feels threatened in that in that perspective, because the minute they feel threatened, they come back with arguments about, you know, what about this or what about that?
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: And I and I always I find it really interesting, but I think I am gonna steal that from you about uh, you know, equality versus revenge.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, be grateful we chose equality.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: That's absolutely the truth.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, that um none of us who have moved forward in ourselves none of us want to be above anybody.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: I don't want to be over anybody or above anybody.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: What I want to be and what I want all of us to be, being a man or a woman, is to be seen individually for what we bring to the table.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Just let us live.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Just to live, you know, just live, just live, just be.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: And and I it's and and to bring it full circle, this is what got me excommunicated from the Mormon Church.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Even as a small child, yeah, I have never cared about what your anatomical parts were.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: What I care about is your mind and your heart.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Who are you as a person?
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: What do you bring to the table as an individual?
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: And I have been married multiple times, I'm probably like my daddy in this perspective, but um I've had a wife and I've had a husband.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: And in the period of my life where I had a wife, um the the the church is really, really good at keeping track of their folk.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: And when I say kid, I mean like it had never I have moved all over the world, and there has never been a single time in my life that missionaries haven't shown up on my step to say welcome to the neighborhood.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: The surveillance is insane, and they call and they s and they have the goal to call other people conspiracy theorists.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: I'm not joking.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: That is insane.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: How so and they and they do it, it's very subtle in the sense that you know, so the bishop might say to my mama, how's Tandy doing?
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: Where's she stationed at now?
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: And my mama would say, Oh, she's in Okinawa.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: And so within within days, I'd have a set of missionaries at my base asking to see me.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: Just to give stalk vibes.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: Like, why would it be like they're just obsessed with me?
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Because they're they want to make sure they keep their flock tight.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: Even though they're even though the church is international, they want to keep that flock super tight.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: So this happened.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: So I moved, I moved from, you know, what what what we British would consider a village.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: I moved from one small village to another, but I moved in with my wife.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: And I had warned her, I told her, I was like, you know, I grew up wine, and there is a good chance at some point the missionary is going to show up on our front door.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: I was like, don't be mean.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: You know, don't throw them off the porch and don't see them.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: I just don't know if you're making the right life choices.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: And so uh they came and they knocked on the door and they were like, um uh sister Hudson, because I was a Hudson at the time.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: Sister Hudson.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, we just wanted to let you know that um, you know, you've got a church because that's what they do.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: They come and they bring you a little bit of a couple of like little tidbits, and you know, they'll bring you some cookies from the from the from the women's society.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: You know, or they'll, you know, just to let you know, here we are, you know, and that if you want to go to church this Sunday, this is when service is, you know, da da da the whole thing.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: And um even now I have a real affinity for missionaries because these missionaries are young men that are sent out into the world, absolutely no idea what they're doing, and and they are required through the gospel of the church to behave in a very particular way in some very unparticular circumstances.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: So, for example, if you are a Mormon missionary, um everything about your life for that two years that you're on your mission revolves wholeheartedly about every every minute of every day, you do not participate or partake in anything that is secular during those two years.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: The only free time that you get, and that free time is to be used to do your laundry, to prepare for the rest of your week, get a haircut, write letters home, so forth and so.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: The rest of the time you are practicing your religion.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: You are praying.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: You are writing um in your journal.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: You are you are just in a um let's call it what you're monastic.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: You're extremely monastic.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: And that's men and women.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: You will not think unless we tell you to think kind of thing.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Anything outside the church, anathema.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: Absolutely not.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: So when these young men come show up on your porch, you just and they're lovely young people that have been so embedded, but they're kind and they're loving, and they don't they don't have a clue and intention in a single fiber of their being.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: They really don't.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: And so I am quite partial to the Mormon missionaries.
- 44:59SPEAKER_00: Like a very naive, completely blind commitment to the coin.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: And so on this particular on this particular day when the missionaries showed up, I explained to them very calmly.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: I was like, I really appreciate that.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: I said, but I will not be coming to church.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: And I said, and I will tell you verbatim why.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: I was like, because I am bisexual and I am in a lesbian relationship with another woman, and I do not think that would go down very well with the bishop on Sunday.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: I said, so chances are I probably want you should have seen their poor little faces.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: I thought both of them were gonna stroke out on my porch and I was gonna have to call an ambulance.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: Um just don't have a whole lot of subtle in me when it comes to those kind of things.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: Well, um, needless to say, within a week of that interaction, I received a letter at my new address stating that I was being called in front of a church tribunal um to answer questions in regards to my personal relationship.
- 46:10SPEAKER_02: What the fuck?
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just explicit by this point.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Um, I hadn't been excommunicating.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: This is how I got excommunicated.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: Um, and so I called the bishop and I said, I just received this letter.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: I was like, I need somebody to explain to me what exactly that means.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: And they were like, well, um, you've gone against the precepts of the church, and we want to discuss that and see if there is a way that we can bring you back into good faith, good practice.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I'm gonna be really honest with you, I am married to a woman.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: Highly doubt that anything that you say to me and anything Jesus might have had to say is gonna bring me back into your fold.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: So deal with that what you will.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: And I wasn't rude to him, I was just very matter-of-fact.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: And um, so yeah, so my parents got a call.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: The bishop of the Atlantic church.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: And then my mama called me and she was like, What have you done?
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Mama, I was like, you've met Beth.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: You know what I have done.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: I let alone, well, you didn't have to tell anybody, and I was like, Well, you didn't have to tell anybody where I was at.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: I was like, the missionary showed up on my porch because you ran your mouse, not because I ran mine.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: And he was like, mortified, absolutely mortified.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: She's like, What am I gonna say to the Lady Society on Sunday?
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: I was like, I don't know, better tell him that you know, daughter is gone to the dark.
- 48:00SPEAKER_01: Like, but you should join me, mama.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: We got cookies.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: That was that.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: And two months later, I received a lovely letter from the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints telling me that I was no longer a practicing member of their faith, that I had been excommunicated, ex parte, and um, that if I wanted to come back into the fold, that I would have to take steps.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: That was that.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: I think Nikki was 10 at the time, so we're looking at 2003.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: I got excommunicated.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: You know, and and to be fair, I actually did go home.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: Um, because I used to drive home regularly.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: Um and my mama was like, Well, are you gonna go to church with us?
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: I was like, Of course I am.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: I was like, This is the church I grew up in.
- 48:56SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you know, these are my people, I know these people.
- 48:58SPEAKER_01: And oh my gosh, the number of the elders of the church that took me to the side, and they were like, sure, you sure is this really the path that you want to take?
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: You know, you know that this is not this is not the way to get to the celestial kingdom.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, listen, I jumped off that road along.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: Carving my own path, sir.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: And and you know, like they but they can't help it.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: It's it's so ingrained.
- 49:29SPEAKER_01: And most of them, especially the elders of our church, um, they've been at it for so long that anything I say has a tendency to be extremely shocking.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: Like I said with dad, Elder Strickland, who is one of the older gentlemen in the church, and he was he was also one of the people that was like there for my baptism.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: So I've known him a whole lot.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: He's like, Sandy, you're so beautiful.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: I just have to ask.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: I know hair.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: Why would you he was like, you were you had such beautiful hair.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: Why won't you grow your hair?
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I got a better question for you, Brother Striker.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: Why don't you ask me?
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, listen, why do you try?
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: It's not your hair.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: What has my hair got to do with me expanding my spiritual knowledge?
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: And he just kind of looked at me and he was like, too showy.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: I was like, thank you.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: You know, so it's not even that like it's just they can't help it.
- 50:42SPEAKER_01: They all live in this bubble.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: And the minute you poke the edges of it, they're not bad people, especially in these small towns with these small turkeys, like because in the Mormon church, they've they've set the system up so that it's broken down into bits, right?
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: So first you've got your branch, right?
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: Your branch is like a pound church, usually it has less than 500 members, right?
- 51:10SPEAKER_01: And then um from that point you go up um to what we call um well, there's one in between, but I can't remember the name of it.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: So then it goes a little bit bigger, and then from that little bit bigger, it goes to um the stake, which the stake is your area church.
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: It's the biggest of all of them.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: It's where all of the elders gather together like once a month for like the um basically the meetings for the priesthood.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: That's where they all get their special oil.
- 51:45SPEAKER_01: Yes, because there's a lot of that.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: A lot of on the foreheads and things like that.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: Anyway, um, and so and but they also it's also a community space, right?
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: So you're a member of that particular stake.
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: So we were a member of what they called the Long Beach Steak.
- 52:04SPEAKER_01: This is when I was still little, we are still living in Texas.
- 52:08SPEAKER_01: Um, and so the Long Beach Steak has a huge gymnasium that was used for like youth dances and youth basketball and all this other kind of stuff.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: Um the dances I used to skip out on to go get drunk with my best mate.
- 52:22SPEAKER_01: So I can but um the the interesting thing is uh I look back now and I'm glad I didn't get sealed in my parents.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: Um I didn't get sealed, I lost my I lost, so in order to go to temple to be sealed together as a family friend, you have to behave yourself throughout the year.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: And you have meetings with your bishop, and then you get what they call a temple permit.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: And it's literally a permit, a piece of paper, you have to show to the people at the temple before they will let you in the door.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: Basically, it's your it's your spiritual bus pass.
- 53:04SPEAKER_01: You don't go nowhere without that.
- 53:07SPEAKER_01: Well, the week prior to us going to the temple to be sealed together as a family forever, I decided to skip school with my best friend so that she could go to the health clinic and get put on the pill.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: Got into a car wreck.
- 53:24SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: And I took the fall for it because she wound up in hospital and I did not.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: And so, because of that, I lost my temple recommend.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: And so I couldn't be sealed to my family.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: So my mom and dad got sealed with my brother and sister while I waited outside.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: They couldn't have postponed it, they just revoked it.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they revoked my temple recommend, and then my mom and daddy and my brother and sister got sealed together.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: That's just cruel, man.
- 53:55SPEAKER_01: That's just really cruel.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, I'm not meeting folks up there in the celestial kingdom on the last day.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Well, that's what they think.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: But I find it really interesting because even then the universe saw fit to keep me out of it.
- 54:13SPEAKER_01: And and I'm glad.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm glad.
- 54:16SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't change those events for anything.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: Now, my best friend, she went on to marry a missionary and have eight beautiful children, and she is now Postmaster General of Henryville, Utah, and he manages a cattle ranch the size of Texas.
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: And she is a beautiful human, but she has had to navigate a life of maintaining that level of stricture, even when those around her, including her own husband, out of that.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: Um her faith in that structure has kept her, and it's kept her strong.
- 55:03SPEAKER_01: She's a very strong human being, and I I love her dearly.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: And whenever we're together, it's like we've never been a part of.
- 55:11SPEAKER_00: I think it was uh amazing that what faith does for people, all faiths, you know, a lot it it's it could be people's foundation, it can it can hold them together.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: It is the reason why I don't bucket my daddy going to church.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: And and even though that is not the path that I chose for myself, and I am grateful for the fact that my parents gave me that religious autonomy at a very young age, I chose my parents' church.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: They didn't, I did that.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: Um and and yes, I was a child, yes, I was young, but if it had not been for my insistence and my direct influence, parents would have never known.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: They would have never become women and my life would be very different.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my parents all be very different, and my daddy has maintained his existence since the death of my mama through the church, yeah, and it has kept him strong, and it's kept him sound because I don't think when when Manga passed, I don't think his heart would let him admit that there could be anything else than that.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: He had to put all his faith in the fact that when he goes, they will be together again.
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, you know, because he loved her that much.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: He loved her enough to to maintain that.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, a couple of things happened not from the past.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: My daddy's uh girlfriend from before my mama, lovely lady out in California named Miss Catherine.
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: Uh she had divorced someone whistling outside.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she had divorced and she looked my daddy up on Facebook.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: I was like, Daddy.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: I was like, you should talk to her.
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: And I think they did.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: I think they became friends on Facebook and they were chit-chatting a little bit here and there, but I I I did not my mama was hard work.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: She was managepress bipolar.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: At one point in my childhood, he actually had to have her institutionalized because he didn't know her to be and I think that it gave both of my parents a structure that they struggled with because their parents didn't give them any structure.
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: And so my parents needed structure to build their foundation on, right?
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: Because they started without it.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: They were both just leaves on the river of life.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: And having that religious structure has kept them, had kept them both sound.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: Like when my mama ghost to the end, she crawled into my daddy's lap and she told him she was scared.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: And he used what he calls the power of the priesthood to calm her fears and his own.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: He'll never see it this way.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: But to me, that's magic.
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: That's magic in its finest form.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: Because what he's done is he's taken intention and faith and he has imbued her with that and given her the ability to be calm in one darkest hour.
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's quite interesting to me because I do not believe in organized religion of any kind in that respect.
- 58:58SPEAKER_01: I think it is a tool of man that has been used to oppress and subjugate and so forth and so on.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: And I feel that way as well about the Mormon church to a degree.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: But I also think if they were to actually open their eyes and look, they would see that they use magic every play day.
- 59:19SPEAKER_01: They turn water into bread into flesh, they turn oil into water.
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: That is, yeah.
- 59:28SPEAKER_01: And you and I both know that that is food on the altar.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: That's food on the altar.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: Sandy, I love that we've come full circle.
- 59:37SPEAKER_00: Just before we finish, I just want to quickly talk about the beautiful gifts that you've brought in for me today and your other books I can see there, which is called Witch.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: Wrap things up with those.
- 59:48SPEAKER_00: Talk to me about um which by Lisa Lister.
- 59:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and for some of us, uh for some of us who are are starting along on their path, I think it would be it's a really good beginner book.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: Um, where he talks a lot about um the power of she, the power of unlocking your inner goddess and finding how you connect on your own term.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: And she discusses also the fact that there's no wrong practice that's really big on, and I'm gonna be really blunt because she says the words in the book quite frequently, the power of the pussy.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, I she's really big on that, and I get it.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: I may not put it that way myself, but you know, it's about the divine feminine.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_01: Um and she talks about, you know, all of our different lovely feast days throughout the year.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_01: And there are some really good chapters on the Sabbath.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: And I've, you know, I've I love all your little um bookmarks or the way you're big on annotating.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that way I have things that um I can go back to.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: And one of the one of the things um I'll just give you an example.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: So she talks about the force of nature, she who cannot be controlled, the creatrix, she who dreams, manifests, and makes magic, the sorceress, she who is charged, dangerous, and not afraid of the dark.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: Now, these are the kind of witches that girls should dress up as for Halloween.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: This is what she says.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: And and I just I think I think this particular book, and and I have a vast collection at the moment, um, the reason why this one spoke to me is because it's very plain.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_01: It's very plain speaking.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: Um and it and it breaks down the finer points of, you know, if you're if you're a newbie witch, how to how to see, um, see the magic in your everyday life and how to manifest your.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: And and and I've really enjoyed it.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: And it has, it has, you know, there's a lot in there that like really connected with me.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: So that's why I brought that one today to show you.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: Um, and I've really enjoyed that.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_00: Um so you've also bless your heart, you've also made me a little tincture.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: This is a proper, this is a proper raw honey um elderberry syrup for you, because I know you've not been feeling well lately.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: Um, so this is an amazing flute preventative.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_01: Um, it has um clove, an seeds, um elderberry, um, ginger, and raw honey.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_01: And that's those are its components.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: Um my favorites.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: And um basically, in order to boost your immune system, tablespoon a day, if you start to feel funky, tablespoons throughout the day.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and yeah, so I and I love it.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: I we're gonna have some as soon as I get home.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_00: I can't start having that.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm really big on sourcing local if possible.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_01: Um, elderberry, unless you've got like an elderberry bush in your yard, elderberry is a bit difficult to come.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_01: I bought it locally from our local bottle, which is also where I got mine.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: Um I'm I'm huge on local, anything local.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_01: So that is raw cornish honey in there from um Castle uh she sells her honey out of um our beautiful pet shop here in town.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, right.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: So I got that from there, and um everything else is uh all of the uh like the ginger, all of my spices um were bought at fees, so local.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, fees, yeah.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_01: I'm really a fees.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_01: It's so important to me that no matter what your practice is or how you are presenting yourself to the world, that we stay strong as a community, and the best way that we can do that is to support each other.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_01: So I find it a very important part of my practice that in as many ways as possible by supporting those around me.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_01: I really appreciate this.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for the same.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_01: I spent too many years in Japan.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_01: And in Japan, if you feel that you've been given honor by somebody, you provide a gift.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_01: And you and Emily have been very good for uh my spiritual um conversations, and so I felt it was deserving of a gift.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: Now, lavender, yeah, the beautiful lavender.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: So I have been growing lavender since the death of my mom.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: Um it was one of her favorites, and so when we got the house, in we're our house fronts Tavistock Road, and there is a wall on the front, and that wall has us has a bed in it.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_01: Um and so I've got lavender running all the way across the front of my house, front of my garden.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: I feel that it on the ends, there's two uh rosemary bushes.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: Because as you know, you need one at the front, the front gate, and the back gate.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, all the all the goodies in and the baddies out.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_01: And so I've done that, and every year I have had the most glorious crop.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: And for me, it's about the bees.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they love it.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_01: The bees uh and I never feel more uh grounded than when I've got you know so in the summer it's eating the lavender and making sure everything is good and then in the in the autumn it's I'm in the process of doing my heart now everything is getting dried down and then I get to go away and it's beautiful.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah thank you this it smells incredible.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_00: I smelt it as soon as you walked into Emily's shop I was like I could smell lavender.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_00: And I love the wax seal as well.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: It's so pretty.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: Just make sure it all stays together.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_01: So I don't know if one of them had stage in there as well.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_01: This one's just all lavender.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_01: But I do I'm a big firm believer in creating our own smudging bundle.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah me too to bless our homes and to chase away all of the bad GG.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_01: Yes and so lavender is one of my favorites for that because when you burn it doesn't make water.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: No lavender sachets just because do your pillow inhales in your tea tea I'm I made sure so they aren't knotted up but you can open them so that you can use them in your practice.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_01: The other thing and the most important part to me is nothing about anything that I has been exposed to any kind of knot nothing.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: I I absolutely am adamant about that ground and blessed have I've spent the past five years digging out all of the junk that was in the ground to to bring the blessings back to it.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah and it's worked.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah and I'm really lucky I have an an outside altar as well as an inside altar.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_01: Um outside altar has a beautiful statue of one of the goddess's many faces we carried sitting on a stem and you know with uh cherry plants and all kinds of other goodies all around her and yeah it's um where I do my penance you know and reconnect my my spirit to to the mother and to everything that uh we should be looking for you know our own inner goddess.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah you know our own and and if you're even if you're a young man, your own inner spirit, your own inner god I tell my son all the time you know you're a hero.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_01: Because I don't want I think that's the thing that I really I've struggled with is that even in my own life and in my own search to make sure that I am self-aware of my own inner lotus and that you know I I want I have six male grandchildren.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_01: But I need to make sure that they don't grow up thinking that Dana hated boys.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah what I hate is male culture.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_01: But I'm very very proud of my son and of the men that he's creating because they're good boys.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_01: And my daughter as well she's got two beautiful little they're my heathens and she's doing it on her own and she's doing an amazing job and and she's struggling because Ron one's got ADHD and the other one he's not got his diagnosis yet but he very clearly is autistic and um yeah so she's navigating that and being a full-time career mom.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_01: She works in OBGYN so she participates in bringing life into the world I tell her all the time she's a goddess because she keeps these women and and sound while they're bringing a whole new life into the world like like you're part of the process you don't even understand how important you are to that process.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: So yeah so there it is I I'm I've been very blessed and I in the sense that I've been given the opportunity to have enough security in my life that I can find my interest yeah and and feel good about that.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah and you know and Kismet and the universe has brought people like yourself and Emily and and others into my life to show me that yeah that's acceptable that that's how we grow as as a community in our in our craft in our parts yeah you know in our manifestations yeah um just before we say goodbye you are on social media uh your the m so your your Instagram is the Mad American yes so just if people wanted to follow you after listening to this and think you know she's so awesome.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_01: You want to follow haircuts she's a she's she's got an awesome barber shop so I am a master barber and I have a barbershop called the Mad American Barbershop and you can find us on Instagram as uh the Mad American Barbershop or I think it might just be Mad American Barbershop.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: Um and then if you're interested in following me personally um I'm really into war hammer like I'm really into Warhammer and painting war dollies and stuff and so and I like pick taking pictures of my dog and my cats and uh my birds and and so you can follow me at uh mad american Moya um Moya at the end is spelled M-O-Y-A.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_00: That is my puppy dog's name she is a seven year old she's beautiful who has decided she's a human being is not a dog and do not curse her at that she is beautiful I shall make sure I link link those in the um description so people can click to them finds them one last thing before we finish just because I'm really really curious I forgot to ask you earlier and I think if I know some of my listeners well they will really want to know it as well okay so I will explain quickly magic underwear I'll try not to take too long.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_01: So um when you enter the temple as a married couple you take a set of covenants and there are no different than in our practice for some of us we use tarot we use runes so forth and so on.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_01: So in the church after you are married one of the symbols of this union between you and your spouse and God is a set of special silk underwear that has symbols of protection itched into them.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_01: So for example on a on a set of on a set of ladies um garments they're called garments on a set of ladies' garments there would be um a special symbol and you're not allowed like I do not know what these symbols mean because I never achieved that so I would not you know profess to to I don't want to speak out of turn um but so there are magical symbols on these garments that give you protection and you wear them every day every day every day yes and so and that you purchase them through the church right um my my daddy wears them and so like he's got like an undershirt like a a light very thin cotton undershirt and I think if I remember correctly there's special symbols um on his on both sides of his chest so very close to the heart and then I would not I think I think my mama's because hers were more silky long what you and I would consider lingerie yeah but not nothing at all.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_01: Summer short set but I got a white silk um and so women's garments there's also two cymbals I believe up on the chest area.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: I think there might be one neck if I can remember correctly and then I think there's something on the leg.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_00: But it's a garment of protection that is provided to you uh by the institution of the church um that you are required to wear throughout your life and my mom and daddy were married um well they got married when I was seven and they uh so from the from the time we joined the church so I'd say 13 they got they both went to temple uh when I was so so from the time I was 16 until now I'm 56 so 40 years my mom and been daddy been wearing magic underwear amazing and um but you know magic isn't real magic isn't real but yet you're wearing you know runic symbols that is that I that is genuinely what they look like yeah like runic symbols um on on your uh under underwear that's incredible yeah so that's what magic underwear are everybody you'd you'd have to join the church and go to temple and find out for sure but you know just make your own or just make your own make your own see it thank you for sharing your incredible story with me it has been an honor to listen to your story I I feel yeah thank you I feel very privileged for being asked I feel very privileged for you it has been such a wonderful conversation and yeah thank you so much for sharing it and I still have so much to talk to you about though I feel like our conversation doesn't end here I think we should be there's so much more I want to ask you and I think you have so many more stories to tell so I hope to have you back on.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_01: I think one of the interesting things in in this life is that some of us like some of us have um have one fear in this life only one and that fear is I don't ever want to get anything that takes my memories from me like Alzheimer's or what have you in fact I I have conversations with the goddess quite often about this as well as my ancestors I was like don't y'all dare y'all better make sure because I have such a rich tapestry of experiences throughout my life that are just so that you can honestly I sometimes I say to myself I can't make this shit up like like I can't believe like I I did that you know and it's just and then most of it's you know circumstantial some of it was manifestation some of it was just being at the right place at the right time you know but I've had all these really brilliant rich experiences that have allowed me to see things and do things and be in places that most people never even get you know whether it's you know sitting on top of a crate in a C 130 flying over the Pacific Ocean for 23 hours or you know just yeah lots of things.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_01: So you know whatever you want to sit chat I think everybody's got an in them and I I I do feel that one of my purposes has been given to me is to be a storyteller and to be an educator and to be a giver of of knowledge where I can.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah and and to share and and to be okay with that.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_01: Be okay to share and not be not get trapped in my own mind or in or in the fact that I think that I'm an imposter or you know not to allow my own uh mental by other things like society or religion or what have you to interfere with my ability to share and to be a storyteller.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_00: So yeah conversation is not over it's never over thank you very well for sharing and thank you so much for sharing to my listeners as well.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_00: Thank you for amazing I hope you all enjoyed listening to this two-part episode with Sandy from the cult to the craft it was an absolute pleasure sitting down and speaking with her having her share her incredible story and journey she is so amazing.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_00: I could listen to her all day.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_00: Sandy was so kind to bring me a few gifts along with her so she brought me a beautiful smudging wand of lavender that had grown from her garden which smelt lovely but also a couple of dried lavender and little sachets and because she knows that I've been unwell she also created a nice little tonic for me from the herbs in her garden as well which tasted absolutely lovely.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_00: I've put some photos of the gifts that she brought me along with the books that she's reading as well and her journal all on my Instagram page for you to go and have a look at.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_00: I've also linked all of her socials in the show notes so please go along, show her some support give her a follow and some love.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_00: Okay so let's move on to our which weekly events because there are two episodes going out this week I'm going to be discussing the events that are going to be going on from Tuesday the 26th of October to Thursday the 29th of October and then in the second episode this week I shall then be letting you know what events are going on Friday the 30th of October to Sunday the 1st of November.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_00: So starting on Tuesday the 27th of October there's going to be a Cornish folklore event um at the Lisgard Museum.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_00: This is at 10 o'clock you can expect a family focused day unpacking regional myths and legends with a dedicated folklore trail and some children's craft sessions.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_00: Rogue of the World Theatre are running the Dead of Night dance.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_00: This has been running from the 23rd of October to Sunday the 1st of November it's held deep within Tahidiwoods by the North Cliffs entrance near Port Ruth in Cornwall.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_00: There are four dances depending on what sort of vibe you'd like to go for.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_00: So for younger families and little explorers they do a midday to 2.30 show.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_00: Then at dusk at around five o'clock they do a bit of a darker show as the woods grow a bit more eerie and then from 7.30 they do an even darker show so it's more of a spooky atmospheric option if you're someone who likes a good scare.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_00: The ticket pricing goes on a tiered pricing scale so they can start from£11 up to£15 and that's to help keep the art accessible.
