Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: In a new movie, power Ballad, Nick Jonas is reliving
- 0:03Speaker 1: the life of a boy band member attempting to take
- 0:05Speaker 1: off as a solo artist, but when he steals the
- 0:08Speaker 1: song of a wedding singer played by Paul Rudd, a
- 0:10Speaker 1: rift forms between the two artists over the meaning of love, commitment,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and the question of whether someone can truly own a
- 0:17Speaker 1: piece of music. Our Ashan sing at a chance to
- 0:19Speaker 1: speak with Nick Jonas and Paul Rudd to discuss the
- 0:21Speaker 1: new movie. Let's take a look.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Wow, Danny Wilson, you were great up there. Come with me.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I could tell within two minutes it meeting you. You
- 0:31Speaker 2: are not just some boy band guy, and you are
- 0:34Speaker 2: too good for that wedding band.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Paul, Nick, thank you guys so much for being here,
- 0:39Speaker 3: and congratulations on power Ballad. This movie is a riot.
- 0:42Speaker 1: This is a.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Film about a washed up wedding singer who has this
- 0:47Speaker 3: beautiful track that he's been sitting on for years, and
- 0:50Speaker 3: then Danny comes in and he takes it and he
- 0:52Speaker 3: makes it big. What was sort of this needle that
- 0:56Speaker 3: you guys were trying to thread as adversaries but also
- 0:59Speaker 3: a kind of creative partners. At one point in the
- 1:02Speaker 3: movie who kind of turn on each other.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It's tricky because it does talk about like well, who
- 1:08Speaker 2: owns what, who's responsible? Definitely a certain amount of notes.
- 1:12Speaker 2: You know, you can construct them in different ways. Never
- 1:15Speaker 2: going to run if you don't walk, don't look down?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Is this song was not finished? I mean, Knick's character
- 1:28Speaker 2: certainly is contributing to the track that he releases. There's
- 1:39Speaker 2: a lot of gray area, and that's what is interesting.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's not such a black and white thing. I don't think.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I really feel like with Nick's character, he did a
- 1:49Speaker 2: pretty masterful job. I think of somebody who you can
- 1:52Speaker 2: empathize with and yet at the same time you kind
- 1:56Speaker 2: of want to scream because you understand the motivations and
- 1:59Speaker 2: I think you see the internal conflict.
- 2:03Speaker 4: This song changed my life.
- 2:06Speaker 3: One of the things that I really appreciated Nick was
- 2:08Speaker 3: the character of Danny isn't portrayed as sort of this
- 2:12Speaker 3: larger than life pop star as we normally see them
- 2:14Speaker 3: in film, Like they're sensitive, they're very insecure. What did
- 2:18Speaker 3: you have to tap into to portray Danny in a
- 2:21Speaker 3: way that, like Paul said, you kind of feel for Yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 3: I think it's.
- 2:25Speaker 4: A testament to the writing.
- 2:26Speaker 5: These circumstances that surround Danny and his life and his
- 2:29Speaker 5: fame and where he's at in his career, and all
- 2:31Speaker 5: those things are just a backdrop to a person who's
- 2:33Speaker 5: going through a real identity crisis.
- 2:35Speaker 4: I definitely related to a lot of.
- 2:36Speaker 5: The things that Danny's going through in this movie, going
- 2:38Speaker 5: back to when I was kind of breaking off solo
- 2:40Speaker 5: and trying to find my sound and myself.
- 2:43Speaker 3: So what was it like sharing the stage because literally
- 2:45Speaker 3: at the top of the movie we see you guys
- 2:46Speaker 3: rip through Stevie Wonders, I wish, I mean, Nick, did
- 2:49Speaker 3: you have to coach Paul up at all? What was
- 2:51Speaker 3: it like actually singing the song together?
- 2:53Speaker 5: No, there was zero, zero coach. It was his teamwork
- 2:56Speaker 5: the whole whole way around. And he blew me away
- 2:58Speaker 5: with his singing. You know, obviously, we know Paul is
- 3:00Speaker 5: one of the best actors alive, and I've been a
- 3:02Speaker 5: fan of his forever, and I.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Mean that that's what I appreciate it, and you're wrong,
- 3:07Speaker 2: but thanks, And it was.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Great to see him jump into the music side of
- 3:11Speaker 4: things with such ease.
- 3:12Speaker 5: And that was our first day on set together, which
- 3:14Speaker 5: I think was the perfect way to kick things off.
- 3:16Speaker 3: You mentioned sort of the familiarity of the role coming
- 3:18Speaker 3: from the Jonas brothers yourself and making it on your
- 3:21Speaker 3: own as a solo artist. How many of the experiences
- 3:24Speaker 3: that Danny faces in that movie felt real to you
- 3:27Speaker 3: and something that you experienced in the industry yourself.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think pressure from the industry to
- 3:33Speaker 5: come with your next hit. You know, there are times
- 3:35Speaker 5: people would say you're only as good as your next hit,
- 3:37Speaker 5: and on one and the spectrum, that's true.
- 3:41Speaker 4: But once a star, always a threat, right.
- 3:43Speaker 5: You can always get in a room, work with the
- 3:45Speaker 5: right people and find that song that can change your
- 3:47Speaker 5: life at any moment in time. That goes for any artist,
- 3:49Speaker 5: and that's kind of what happens for Danny.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Because every song.
- 3:54Speaker 3: In my life.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It's about so good.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Although he takes the song and doesn't give him the credit,
- 4:07Speaker 5: you know, we see what can happen when there's a
- 4:09Speaker 5: sort of a collaboration that creates some magic coming forward.
- 4:14Speaker 3: What was it like working with John Carney, someone who
- 4:16Speaker 3: does have such a musical background and this is such
- 4:19Speaker 3: a musical story.
- 4:20Speaker 5: I've been a fan of John's for forever, going back
- 4:22Speaker 5: to once and then sing Street.
- 4:23Speaker 4: It's one of my one of my favorite movies. Dreamed
- 4:25Speaker 4: of working with him, you know.
- 4:27Speaker 5: I had heard that he was working on a script
- 4:29Speaker 5: and just read the logline of what it was about
- 4:32Speaker 5: and said to my team, I was like, please, if
- 4:34Speaker 5: you can't get get your hands on that script so
- 4:36Speaker 5: I can read it. And they did, and then I
- 4:38Speaker 5: just said, I gotta meet John and talk to him
- 4:41Speaker 5: and see if he'll let me be in this movie.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Thankfully, he said yes.
- 4:44Speaker 5: But I also knew at the time that Paul was attached,
- 4:46Speaker 5: and it was kind of a dream duo for this story.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Cheers that both of your characters are coming from two
- 4:53Speaker 3: very different perspectives, but they kind of seem to be
- 4:56Speaker 3: chasing the same thing. Danny's chasing legitimacy as a global
- 4:59Speaker 3: p star and Rick is chasing legitimacy just as an artist.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Did you find like there were parallels in the character
- 5:07Speaker 3: that you were both trying to create uniquely but also
- 5:10Speaker 3: sort of facing the same kind of struggle.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Well, I think it's just both of these guys are
- 5:14Speaker 2: trying to achieve their dream, you know, they want to
- 5:20Speaker 2: accomplish something, and they see what's in front of them,
- 5:24Speaker 2: what they want to be, and each one of them
- 5:28Speaker 2: is close to it. One's a little closer than the other,
- 5:32Speaker 2: but it's all relative, and the struggles and the doors
- 5:36Speaker 2: slamming in your face are there, so both of these
- 5:40Speaker 2: characters experience that in their own way. Can I have that?
- 5:44Speaker 4: Look?
- 5:45Speaker 2: All I did was just throwing a little paprika, a
- 5:48Speaker 2: little spice on top of some spicy spice. Add whatever
- 5:51Speaker 2: spices you want.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Without giving away any spoilers. One thing I really appreciate
- 5:56Speaker 3: about this movie is that it's kind of messy in
- 5:58Speaker 3: the way that it ends sort of has that traditional
- 6:01Speaker 3: bow on it where everybody's happy and walks away. Did
- 6:05Speaker 3: it feel grounded for y'all ending the movie the way
- 6:07Speaker 3: that it did.
- 6:08Speaker 4: It did to me because life is a little messy.
- 6:11Speaker 5: It's not always black and white, and it doesn't always
- 6:14Speaker 5: end up with that bow on it where everyone's happy.
- 6:16Speaker 5: I think we'd like to believe it does in certain scenarios,
- 6:19Speaker 5: but it's complicated. Even I didn't know the first time
- 6:22Speaker 5: I watched the cut because there was one thing that
- 6:24Speaker 5: was at at the end. It was so brilliant on
- 6:26Speaker 5: John's part. It kind of hit me pretty hard. I
- 6:30Speaker 5: think it's a great way to end.
- 6:31Speaker 3: It, Fellas, Thank you so much for your time and
- 6:34Speaker 3: rats on the film. It's super fun.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Thanks our thanks to Aushin Singh for the conversation. You
- 6:39Speaker 1: can see Power Ballad in theaters now
