- 0:09A place where you can kick off your shoes and I think I feel a
- 0:18song coming on. Welcome to Hubba Wah, a Muppet
- 0:43quiz show brought to you by toughpigs.com.
- 0:46It's your favorite quiz show that's not like the others here.
- 0:51Muppet fans, Muppet Professionals, and everyone in
- 0:55between competes for fabulous prizes and to see who's this
- 0:59week's toughest Pig. I'm your host Becca Petunia of
- 1:04toughpigs.com. And tonight we're going to party
- 1:09like it's 1999. That's right, today's episode is
- 1:13all about the year 1999. You know, throughout history,
- 1:19most years see the release of 0 theatrical Muppet movies.
- 1:25And yet 1999 is an outlier because there were two
- 1:30theatrical Muppet movies released this year, both Muppets
- 1:34From Space and The Adventures of Elmo and Grouchland.
- 1:38And yes, I have to use the full title at least once, came out in
- 1:431999. You know, it's been said by
- 1:47some, not by Tough Pig's own Anthony Strand, but by some,
- 1:52that 1999 was the best year ever for movies, or at least the year
- 1:57that really changed the course of what today's cinema would
- 2:02look like. And I was doing some reading,
- 2:05and it turns out that that's entirely because of Muppets From
- 2:08Space and The Adventures of Elmo and Grouchland, because these
- 2:13movies were massive critical and box office successes.
- 2:17And I'm sure that that's true and you don't.
- 2:20You guys don't need to look it up.
- 2:22I'm sure it's true. So today I've planned an entire
- 2:27episode of questions about what The Muppets were up to in 1999.
- 2:33Now, I was alive in 1999, but I was only 8 in 1999, so I don't
- 2:40remember it perfectly. So I had to head to Muppet Wiki
- 2:45to learn what I needed to help write the questions for this
- 2:48episode. Plus, because we're talking
- 2:51about a year of great movies, I turned to IMDb and to Box Office
- 2:56Mojo. So Speaking of, let's agree to
- 2:59play fair today. Please don't look at Muppet Wiki
- 3:03or any other resource during this game.
- 3:06Anyone who breaks this rule will be imprisoned in the Covenet
- 3:10facility for scientific testing. Anyway, before we hop in the old
- 3:16time machine, let's meet our guests.
- 3:19As always, we're going to play our first game to tell a face.
- 3:25Contestants buzz in to answer some questions about yourself.
- 3:29Whoever buzzes in first will get introduced first.
- 3:32Ready. Go.
- 3:36All right, that is Tough Pig's own Anthony Strand.
- 3:42Anthony. What's your name?
- 3:44Anthony Strand. Tough Pig's own Anthony Strand?
- 3:48Sure. That's my title, but we can say
- 3:51it's my name. Sure.
- 3:53So Anthony, everybody knows you. Certainly everyone listening to
- 3:57this podcast knows you. You're a long time writer for
- 4:01Tough Pigs. You Co host Tough Pigs flagship
- 4:05podcast moving Right Along A Muppet Movie podcast brought to
- 4:09you by toughpigs.com. It's.
- 4:10True, I do. Which is a fabulous podcast and
- 4:14is basically easily, easily in my top two favorite podcasts.
- 4:20It's in my top. I don't know 53.
- 4:22I don't know like. This OK, well, well, keep that
- 4:25in mind. So the point I'm making is, is
- 4:28everybody knows your history with The Muppets.
- 4:31Everybody listening knows your history with The Muppets.
- 4:33And if they don't, there's hours and hours of stuff they can
- 4:38listen to that'll explore that. I know all about how you first
- 4:43watch The Muppets on reruns on Nickelodeon at your
- 4:46grandmother's house, and the rest is history.
- 4:48It's true. So I'm not going to ask you your
- 4:52history with The Muppets, and instead I'm going to ask you a
- 4:54simple question, Anthony. Do you wake up in the morning
- 4:58mean and grumpy and do you frown at everybody that you see?
- 5:01And Anthony, do you like your oatmeal nice and cold and lumpy?
- 5:06Sure, but I don't understand that reference.
- 5:08I I I think it's something about Bert.
- 5:10I I don't know it. Is it from?
- 5:12Is it from Elmo and Grouchland opening song?
- 5:14No, no. What is it?
- 5:16I I don't know it. So Anthony, this is, this is a
- 5:19classic Oscar the Grouch song. This this is like an Oscar the
- 5:24Grouch song from the 70s. This is like.
- 5:26I believe. When we had that long
- 5:28conversation on the group chat about the fact that I thought
- 5:33that Counting is Wonderful was like the most classic count song
- 5:37ever and you'd never heard anyway, it's called the Grouch
- 5:40Song I. Don't know it.
- 5:42Carol Spinney sings it, and for it was Carol.
- 5:44Spinney sings it. You already said it's a classic
- 5:48Oscar the Grouch song from the 70s, and now, as though this was
- 5:52additional information you added, Carol Spinney sings it
- 5:56well. It is worth noting that on the
- 5:58Elmo and Grouchland CD, but not in the movie, there's a bonus
- 6:03version of it that is sung by Oscar, Elmo and Grizzy.
- 6:07So, you know, keep that. In mind I I truly thought you
- 6:10were gonna say sung by Mandy Patinkin.
- 6:12I really did. I won't, man, Can you imagine?
- 6:14It'd be great. It'd be great.
- 6:16I'm sorry. I really am sorry to ruin the
- 6:17bit. I don't.
- 6:18I didn't know it. I.
- 6:19OK, OK, OK, that's fine. There's no questions about it,
- 6:22'cause it technically wasn't in the movie.
- 6:24You're fine. And Anthony, my third question
- 6:27for you is actually you didn't answer do do you wake up in the
- 6:31morning meaning grumpy and frown at everybody that you see?
- 6:35Only on Thursdays. OK.
- 6:37That's fair. And Anthony, my last question
- 6:40for you is, did you see either of these movies in theaters in
- 6:431999? No, I did not see either of them
- 6:46in theaters. I was 14 years old, and I broke
- 6:49my leg in June, the same month that most from space came out.
- 6:56And so I had a broken leg at the time.
- 6:58And so I couldn't go see it at the movie theater and Elmo and
- 7:02Grouchland, I don't know. I wasn't gonna go see that at
- 7:05the theater. Certainly.
- 7:07Certainly not when you're 14, not when.
- 7:09I'm 14, exactly like I think even if I'd been like 19, I
- 7:13probably would have or something, you know?
- 7:1514 is the exact age where you are not gonna go see a Sesame
- 7:19Street movie in public. Exactly.
- 7:22I I will say I I'm pretty sure I saw Muppets from Space in
- 7:26theaters. I know I did not see Elmo in
- 7:29Grouchland and. Theaters.
- 7:30No one did. No one did.
- 7:31Well, we'll get there. I mean, hold on.
- 7:34Wait. Well, by my count, everyone did.
- 7:38And it's the most successful blockbuster movie of all time.
- 7:42Uh huh. Uh, huh.
- 7:43Oh, that's that's what I read. But anyway, thank you so much,
- 7:49Anthony, for all of those questions and whether or not
- 7:51you've heard the classic Carroll Spinney number, the Grouch song.
- 7:56Well, I'm. I'm certainly going to look it
- 7:57up now. You should.
- 7:58It's great. Sure.
- 8:01But you still earn yourself 20 points.
- 8:05Let's move on to our 2nd guest. 2nd guest what is your name?
- 8:10My name is Patrick Cotner, and I'm hoping to earn myself 30
- 8:13points in this opening segment. Oh.
- 8:16Well, maybe you will. Patrick, you know you aren't as
- 8:22regular of a fixture on Tough Pigs, So I'm gonna ask you.
- 8:26First of all, I'm gonna ask you for our audience.
- 8:29What is it that you do? Great question.
- 8:33I'm. A Patrick, can you answer that
- 8:36question for me? Because I'm honestly, what do
- 8:38you do? I I don't know if I know.
- 8:40Yeah, but I'm. A I'm a producer.
- 8:43I'm a talent Booker. I'm a Co host.
- 8:48I'm AII work in the comedy world.
- 8:50I do a show called The George Lucas Talk Show with Connor
- 8:53Ratliff and Griffin Newman. I produced a show called ASCAP
- 8:57out at UCB Theater in Los Angeles.
- 9:01I booked a bunch of podcasts. I worked on The Chris Gethard
- 9:03Show. I I I interned at Sesame Street.
- 9:07I sort of, you know, bop around for whoever will give me money,
- 9:10you know, and I'm hoping to earn 30 points in this opening.
- 9:15OK, OK. OK.
- 9:16Well, I'm, I'm, we're getting close.
- 9:20And how about The Muppets, What's your history with them?
- 9:22You hear about those guys, The Muppets?
- 9:24I I have heard about them. I it would be this would be
- 9:28tough. This would be a tough show for
- 9:29me to be on if I was like, oh, I don't know those guys, you know?
- 9:34No, I was a big Muppet kid growing up.
- 9:37My my aunt was very into The Muppets when she was a child,
- 9:40and my grandma and grandpa had saved all of her stuff.
- 9:44So I had books and I had toys and I had, you know, VHS tapes
- 9:49from when she was a kid. So I the first thing I really
- 9:51remember seeing was either the Muppet Movie or VHS of the
- 9:57Vincent Price, Alice Cooper episodes of The Muppet Show.
- 10:00It was like a Halloween VHS and I just watched those over and
- 10:04over and over again. But they had all those puppets
- 10:06that came out in the 70s the like mass produced, you know,
- 10:09Miss Piggy and Animal and Ralph and all those.
- 10:11So we used to play with those a lot as a kid and just never grew
- 10:15out of it. Couple weeks ago, listeners
- 10:18aren't going to be able to see this.
- 10:19I finally got a Palisades Kermit.
- 10:21Just the regular Kermit. I never had the naked, naked
- 10:24one. Yeah.
- 10:25So I opened it up. I have.
- 10:27I have a fozzie and a scooter and I haven't been able to open
- 10:30them because I know that once I open them there will be no other
- 10:33ones for me to open in the future and that makes me very
- 10:36sad. You can kind of see it's it's
- 10:39hard, but I'm pointing with my pencil eraser at New Zealand and
- 10:45Uncle Deadly. Who?
- 10:46I mean the Kings. Who are over here sort of you
- 10:49can kind of see. And you can you can cut
- 10:53listeners you can't see this but the pigs in space place that is
- 10:56up on a bookshelf. Behind.
- 10:57Oh well, I can see that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:00But. And listeners, you can't see
- 11:02this, but right over there, you guys can't see it either.
- 11:05But right over there, it's on my shelf, My VHS shelf.
- 11:09I got Stetler and Waldorf sitting in their chairs right
- 11:12next to the VHS tape of Meet Me in Saint Louis.
- 11:16They probably, you know, I bet they would like that movie,
- 11:19though. You know, they probably would.
- 11:21Yeah, It's appropriate, actually.
- 11:23Maybe I should. You know, what's funny is I
- 11:24actually have Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men on tape.
- 11:28I really should put them next to that.
- 11:29One of those between the two of them.
- 11:31Didn't you? We'll get into that, I was going
- 11:33to say. And Patrick, did you see either
- 11:37of these movies in theaters in 1999?
- 11:41Now look, I hate to one up both of you, but I saw both of these
- 11:44movies in theaters in 1999. I I was trying to remember while
- 11:47you were talking. I know I saw Moen Grouchland in
- 11:50a movie theater. I don't know if it was first run
- 11:53or if it was like a summer movie program thing they were doing
- 11:56where they would like re release kids movies to like I don't know
- 12:00if you read five books, you got a movie ticket or something like
- 12:02that, but I know I saw it in a movie theater within 1999 or
- 12:072000. You know it was within that
- 12:09first year because I'm a little bit, the tiniest bit younger
- 12:13than you guys. So I was still too old but was
- 12:16happy to see it. I do remember though, I was
- 12:19thinking about this. We, I grew up in the town where
- 12:23the North American headquarters for Lego was and we were at a We
- 12:28were at like a Lego block party thing and they were sponsoring a
- 12:34cars like an SUV and it had a DVD player inside, like you
- 12:39could watch DVDs, it would like flip down from the screen.
- 12:41It was like super early for that kind of thing.
- 12:43So it's really crazy that that existed.
- 12:45And I remembered they were playing Muppets from Space on
- 12:48the DVD player in there. And I was so excited because I
- 12:51was like, mom, I want this car so we can watch Muppets from
- 12:54Space. And I didn't care about the car
- 12:56at all. I just wanted to watch Muppets
- 12:58From Space. And so you also saw Muppets From
- 13:00Space in theaters? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, for
- 13:03sure. I, I look.
- 13:05Maybe we'll get into this later. Love Muppets from Space?
- 13:07Easily Top tier Muppet movie for me, Yeah.
- 13:12You're in good company, I feel like, of the tough pigs, Anthony
- 13:17and I may be the ones who like Muppets from space the most.
- 13:21I think that's right. I think that's right.
- 13:23Yeah. Muppets from Space could be my
- 13:27second favorite. Muppet Movie, probably my third
- 13:29favorite. I.
- 13:30Understand. I understand that.
- 13:32That's great. My ranking is.
- 13:33Wild. It's like a solid 5 or 6 for me.
- 13:37Still not bad. Depending on how I feel about
- 13:39the 2011 movie that day. Basically sure.
- 13:43I think this is the movie I'd want to re watch more than a lot
- 13:46of them though, which I also understand is crazy.
- 13:48It goes down real easy. It's so short it's the shortest
- 13:51one. So fun, fun fact, fun.
- 13:53And see where I knew. I knew we would.
- 13:55I knew we would get off topic. But that's what I got into when
- 13:58I invited YouTube. And this isn't really off topic,
- 14:00but like off script is I guess what I mean.
- 14:03But when I was a kid, this Muppets from Space was the movie
- 14:07I would watch when I was sick. So whenever I was homesick from
- 14:12school, I would put on Muppets from Space.
- 14:17So I've seen this movie, possibly more than any other
- 14:20Muppet movie. I love that.
- 14:24I love that. That's a good.
- 14:25That's a good choice. I think you made the right
- 14:27choice. Yeah, but we'll we'll talk all
- 14:29about our our love or or Nah or where it's us on the show, our
- 14:35love of. Muppets.
- 14:36I think that's. I think that's right.
- 14:37Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:38I'll talk. We'll talk about our love for
- 14:40Muppets from Space and of course, audiences love for
- 14:43Muppets from Space. The biggest blockbuster of the
- 14:46year 1999. Cause yeah, I was looking, I was
- 14:50looking at at a book and it said that the biggest blockbuster of
- 14:541999 was a movie about space. And so I didn't even read the
- 14:58next sentence. I just knew what it had to be
- 15:01talking about was. 'Cause you you you said Lost in
- 15:04Space came out in 1998 and threw it down.
- 15:08That's what happened. And Attack of the Clones came
- 15:13out in in 2002. Couldn't be that.
- 15:16Couldn't be that I thought maybe it was Galaxy Quest, but I was
- 15:20like, Nah, Nah. Anyway, the point is, Patrick,
- 15:25you have earned 20 points, but you know what?
- 15:29You're going for 30. And I forgot to ask another
- 15:32question that I've been asking this season.
- 15:35So both of you will start with Patrick Patrick.
- 15:39What pronouns should we use for you on the show?
- 15:41You can use he him for me. OK.
- 15:44And Anthony, how about you? I too am a he him boy.
- 15:47OK, so you guys both get 10 extra points, bringing you to 30
- 15:51points. You'd think I would remember
- 15:57that I added that to my script. And yet, here we are.
- 16:02All right, Well, anyway, now that we've met our guests, let's
- 16:06go back to 1999. Picture yourself in 1999.
- 16:12Bill Clinton is in office. You just rented Donkey Kong 64
- 16:17from Blockbuster. And of course, the Talk of the
- 16:20Town are those massive Blockbuster smash hits, Muppets
- 16:24From Space and The Adventures of Elmo and Grouchland.
- 16:29That's all the town was talking about in 1999, so let's relive
- 16:36this conversation in our first game.
- 16:39Can you guess? In this round, I'll ask you a
- 16:42grab bag of questions about The Muppets 2/19/99 theatrical
- 16:47films. You'll buzz in to answer them.
- 16:51It's basically just how trivia games work.
- 16:54I don't know, I didn't. I didn't need to do anything
- 16:56fancy here. Each of these questions is going
- 16:59to be worth 2 points buzzing to answer, but Please wait until I
- 17:04finish reading the questions so our friends at home can be
- 17:08nostalgic with us. Ready.
- 17:11Yeah. Let's go.
- 17:12Andrew. Yes, Sir.
- 17:15The remote. The goat.
- 17:18The remote. The remote remote.
- 17:22I thought he said The goat. All right, so this question I
- 17:27had to ask because Tough Pig's founder Danny Horn said that I
- 17:30had to ask it. What is the name of the
- 17:33character that Bobo plays in Muppets from Space?
- 17:40Anthony Rentro. It is Rentro to this.
- 17:47To this day, I don't understand why.
- 17:49And Anthony, I can't wait until you get to this on moving right
- 17:54along because I hope that you will find the answer.
- 17:56I hope we can. I hope we can, yeah.
- 17:59Question Two Elmo's unwillingness to share which of
- 18:04his belongings forms the main conflict of Elmo in Grouchland.
- 18:13Patrick. It's his blanket.
- 18:15It is his. Blanket It's Elmo's best friend,
- 18:18as he says in the opening song to Elmo in Grouchland.
- 18:22Can I also say, when you were reading those lyrics to the
- 18:25Oscar song? Anthony asked.
- 18:27Is that from Elmo and Grouchland?
- 18:29And I nodded vigorously. I watched the movie yesterday
- 18:32and I. I I'll admit that I did not
- 18:39rewatch either of these. I should have.
- 18:42It's, it's not in the movie. It's on the CD.
- 18:44It's on the CD and I have to say, see, here I go again.
- 18:49But that song, it's kind of weird that it's like Elmo is
- 18:53singing it, but the concept is like Elmo is trying to learn how
- 18:58to be a grouch. And it's so cute because the
- 19:02song ends and Elmo tries to do Oscar's laugh and say have a
- 19:07rotten day, and then Oscar laughs and goes.
- 19:09Now that's my boy. And I just love this idea of
- 19:14Oscar having like a weird paternal side towards Elmo.
- 19:18I don't know, I always found that very cute.
- 19:19That's. Very funny.
- 19:22That's. The sequel.
- 19:23That's the sequel. Yeah.
- 19:24Louie's. Louie's out.
- 19:26Yeah, we're getting rid of Louie Question 3.
- 19:32Which classic Muppet Show character made his first
- 19:35appearance in Muppets From Space since 1991's Muppet Vision 3D?
- 19:41After eight years of neither silent nor speaking appearances,
- 19:50I think Patrick buzzed in Patrick Scooter.
- 19:53It is Scooter correct? Here's a fun question.
- 19:57Where does Scooter appear on Muppets Anthony?
- 20:05Is he a photograph in like the green room?
- 20:09Yeah, he's a photograph in the green room or just on the wall
- 20:12of the studio somewhere. Sure, that makes sense.
- 20:15Yeah, but no, he's again. He didn't even appear in the
- 20:18background. Treasure Island, Muppet
- 20:22Christmas Carol. And then he's in this movie.
- 20:24Question four, What is the name of the tabloid style alien TV
- 20:29show that Gonzo and Piggy appear on?
- 20:35Anthony. UFO Mania.
- 20:37It is UFO Mania, correct? My favorite show.
- 20:43Is it still on? Yeah, I've seen every episode 25
- 20:46seasons. Is Shelley still there?
- 20:50Yeah, Shelley Snipes is still the host.
- 20:53She's doing well. They got rid.
- 20:56They. Got rid of Rob.
- 20:57Schneider. Exactly.
- 20:58We're just putting in the same joke.
- 21:03Question five, though, we always just call him Mandy Patinkin.
- 21:08What is the name of the villain of Elmo in Grouchland, who of
- 21:12course was played by Randy Patinkin Patrick?
- 21:19Huxley. It is Huxley.
- 21:21Mean old Huxley. Can I can I bring up something I
- 21:27thought of while I was watching this movie?
- 21:29I watched this movie and I was just like, what's Huxley's deal?
- 21:33He's just a guy who lives in Grouchland and like sort of has
- 21:39the mentality of a child. Correct.
- 21:42OK, great. I was.
- 21:44I was just thinking about it in real life and I was like, how
- 21:47did he get there? I want the origin story.
- 21:50What is Huxley's deal? You should pitch a comic.
- 21:53You know, like the I have a. Great origin story for him.
- 21:57He's one of the kids from the early seasons of Sesame Street
- 22:00who accidentally fell down Oscar's can.
- 22:03Oh, there you go. There you go.
- 22:05I think that's fun. I think you should pitch that.
- 22:08Well, listen and write. It wasn't there.
- 22:11Wasn't there a script for the Sesame Street movie, The third
- 22:15Sesame Street movie that was about how Anne Hathaway was one
- 22:19of the kids from season one of Sesame Street returning to
- 22:22Sesame Street? Oh, I didn't know that was the.
- 22:25Pitch that was at 1.1 of the pitch.
- 22:27Interesting. Interesting.
- 22:30Anne Hathaway, a person who's like, born in 1981.
- 22:34We're gonna be from season one of Sesame Street.
- 22:36Well, the the movie took place in 83 there.
- 22:39You go, there you go. Yeah.
- 22:41David's back, Everyone's back. The hot dog.
- 22:43Guy. Kermit Love the hot dog guy and
- 22:46all of that. Great.
- 22:49Great. Please.
- 22:54Question 6IN Grouchland, it's against the law to use shampoo.
- 22:59As a result, what do the grouches use to wash themselves?
- 23:06Patrick, I'm. Gonna say mud?
- 23:09It is not mud, Anthony. Do you know?
- 23:13Is it real, Pooh? No, that's funny, but that's not
- 23:17really a Sesame Street joke. Not at all, of course.
- 23:20Not no. But it's funny.
- 23:21It's it's cheese is the correct answer.
- 23:24It's cheese. Reminder though, Becca, that
- 23:27that is literally a Muppet Show joke.
- 23:29It's wig racing, Richard Hunt's character says.
- 23:31I I don't use shampoo to clean my wigs.
- 23:34I only use real poo. I don't remember that.
- 23:37Wow. Who says that?
- 23:40He's like in it's a Muppet Sports segment and it's Richard
- 23:43Hunt as like the wig trainer in Wig Racing.
- 23:47Weird. Yeah, I mean, it's a funny joke.
- 23:52Yeah. Yeah, Hey, and also Speaking of
- 23:56laws in Grouchland, some of your favorite Sesame Street
- 24:00characters get thrown into jail during the plot of Elmo and
- 24:04Grouchland. What crime do they commit,
- 24:11Anthony? It's like saying hello or
- 24:15something like that. Close, but no.
- 24:17OK Patrick, do you remember you watched the movie yesterday?
- 24:23I. Watched the movie yesterday.
- 24:25Is it smiling? It is not smiling.
- 24:29It is asking a police officer for help.
- 24:33I mean, I mean, look. Sesame Street reflecting the
- 24:37reality of life. As always, Question 8, Kirk.
- 24:41Thatcher wrote a similar script to Muppets From Space, except
- 24:45his involved Muppets actually going to Space.
- 24:48What merchandise was released themed around this script?
- 24:57Patrick by a hare. The Welch's grape Jelly jars.
- 25:01It is Welch's Jelly jars, correct?
- 25:03We had those when I was a kid. I had one of them, I had the
- 25:06animal one. I think we may have had all of
- 25:10them. I was at lunch with my friend
- 25:13Brian Lynch the other day and this came up in conversation and
- 25:17we were both trying to do best Offer on eBay postings for full
- 25:23sets of them. And both of us were like, we
- 25:25don't need these, we don't have space for them, but we want
- 25:28them. And I don't think, I don't think
- 25:30either of us won. They are pretty cool.
- 25:37Question 9 Gonzo receives a message from his alien brethren
- 25:41in his breakfast cereal, Captain Alphabet.
- 25:44Which Muppet character appears on the cereal box?
- 25:52Patrick the. Mr. Poodle Pants.
- 25:55It is Mr. Poodle Pants, So this is honestly something I never
- 25:59realized. I never.
- 26:01Did until you. Until you asked the question.
- 26:04According to Muppet Wiki, it is Mr. Poodle Pants.
- 26:07And according to Steve Whitmire, he filmed a scene with Mr.
- 26:14Poodle Pants as Cap and Alphabet.
- 26:16Who was going to appear in Covenant.
- 26:19Huh. It's on Bumpy Wiki.
- 26:23Wow. Wait, he was going to appear in
- 26:26Covenant? Correct on.
- 26:29No explanation of how that makes sense.
- 26:31OK. Do you guys know Ken Plume?
- 26:34Yeah, sure. He's write articles.
- 26:36He's write articles stuff. He has the cereal box?
- 26:39No. Kidding.
- 26:40Does he really that rule? He has the cereal box, which is
- 26:43very cool. That's great, yeah.
- 26:45But yeah, if you look at it, it is Mr. Poodle Pants with a
- 26:47different wig. I never thought about it before
- 26:51writing these questions, but Muppet Wiki has trivia on it.
- 26:56I always think about Mr. Poodle Pants, Question 10.
- 27:00Hey, for question 10, we're going to play a mini beat the
- 27:02time. So we'll go back and forth,
- 27:07starting with Anthony Anthony, starting with you back and
- 27:12forth. Name as many of Rizzo's fellow
- 27:14Lab Rats as you can. Bubba.
- 27:17Bubba is one of them. All right.
- 27:19Patrick, can you name another? The Birdman.
- 27:22The Birdman is another one of them, Anthony.
- 27:26Those are the two I can remember, so I'll say shakes.
- 27:30Shakes is correct I. Couldn't remember if that was
- 27:32his name. Is there only one more?
- 27:34No, there are 5 total. No, fast.
- 27:43Eddie Fast Eddie is one of them. And there is one more.
- 27:50And it's Masterson. It is not Masterson's good
- 27:56guess, Patrick. Any idea?
- 28:00I don't know. It's Troy.
- 28:02I have no memory, no memory of there being a rat named Troy.
- 28:10But Muppet wiki says there is, I should say.
- 28:14Troy and Rizzo in the morning. I did not rewatch Muppets From
- 28:20Space to write these questions. I knew the movie so well, and I
- 28:26knew I had Muppet you. Didn't know Troy.
- 28:27You didn't know Troy. Becca.
- 28:29I had Muppet. Troy.
- 28:30Becca. I I checked muppet wiki for
- 28:32that. And I also want to be clear, I
- 28:35did watch the movie today. I do not remember a rat named
- 28:38Troy. I just want to put that out
- 28:39there. He's the.
- 28:42One who is lifting weights. OK.
- 28:47Sure, sure. And for the last question, in
- 28:51this round we are going to play a mini.
- 28:54So there's 3 answers to this one.
- 28:57Buzz in and you can name as many as you can, but your opponent
- 29:00will be able to steal the three inventions Bunsen and Beaker.
- 29:04Give The Muppets to break into Coffnet.
- 29:08Anthony. It's like invisibility cream.
- 29:13Mm hmm. Mind control spray and door in
- 29:19the jar. Correct on all of them.
- 29:23Nice work. And the door in a jar kind of
- 29:26looks like 123 says it absolutely.
- 29:28Does. And the CG of the stuff going up
- 29:33against the the wall looks fantastic and no one should ever
- 29:36question it. Flawless.
- 29:38Remember, this is this is the same year that The Phantom
- 29:40Menace came out. Yeah, it looks just like Boss
- 29:43Nass. Yeah, maybe that.
- 29:46I was gonna go for Sebulba. Sure.
- 29:48Sure. Yeah, you can't.
- 29:52You can't. You definitely can't see them.
- 29:54But I have my boss, Nas and Jar Jar, and one of the pod erasers.
- 30:03I can't believe I'm forgetting which pod eraser.
- 30:05ODC mandrel. It is not OD.
- 30:07Manic. No.
- 30:09Is it Tinto pagalis? It's the one.
- 30:13It's then Quadraneros. It's not.
- 30:15I wish it was is this. Mannequin Skywalker.
- 30:18Is. It Sebulba.
- 30:22No, I'd remember that one too. She said Sebulba, She.
- 30:25Said that, is it? Let me guess this I want to
- 30:29really want to get this. Is it God?
- 30:32Who's left? Is it the one who goes and then
- 30:35hits the rock? It's the little one with really
- 30:38long arms. But who isn't Sebulba?
- 30:43Oh yeah, I don't remember who. Oh, oh, I don't remember who.
- 30:47It is. Well, here's why I'm
- 30:48embarrassed. I have the Comtech chip on my
- 30:51key chain for like my house keys.
- 30:54So in theory I see the character's name every day and
- 31:00in practice I do not remember it.
- 31:02Anyway, so Gazgano that's his name.
- 31:07Gazgano I have. One I have one Star Wars action
- 31:10figure. I own one.
- 31:12It was a gift from my moving right along Co host Ryan Rowe.
- 31:15I know it is. It is Dexter Jetster.
- 31:18Good choice. Good choice.
- 31:20Good figure. It is.
- 31:23Yeah, no, these were all a gift from my sister.
- 31:26You know, like found for a buck at a thrift store type thing.
- 31:30Like no one wants Gazgano anyway.
- 31:36Clearly, as evidenced by the Gazgano on my shelf over there,
- 31:41we haven't left 1999 yet. And neither of The Muppets
- 31:46because again, it was a huge year for them.
- 31:50Two new smash hit movies. 30 years of Sesame Street Muppets
- 31:56tonight, Not on TV. What a wonderful year for The
- 32:01Muppets. Well, I can't even say that with
- 32:03a strange face. It might have been in repeats by
- 32:08then it might. Have still Disney Channel by.
- 32:10Disney Channel OK, OK, new episodes of Muppets Tonight not
- 32:14being produced. No.
- 32:16So that's why we're going to play a new game called 99 Pieces
- 32:21of Cheese on the Wall. It's a game where I ask you
- 32:25trivia questions about the year 1999.
- 32:30I don't think I can ever use this game again in any other
- 32:32episode. It's it's not.
- 32:34Not my most versatile game. Each of these questions will be
- 32:39worth 2 points again. Wait until I finish reading them
- 32:44to buzz in. Here we go.
- 32:45Oh, problem there, Sir. You remember those parking
- 32:50tickets you asked me to take care of for you and and I said
- 32:54that. Oh, just say it.
- 32:58Cars impounded. Oh.
- 33:02We can take my company car. Fine.
- 33:05Great. 66 bottles. Beer on the wall. 66 bottles.
- 33:11Excuse me. Excuse me.
- 33:14Can this thing go any faster? I'm doing 30.
- 33:17Hey, you want to slow down there, buddy?
- 33:20We're out of traffic tonight, Sir.
- 33:22Safety first. Question One.
- 33:24In 1999, season one of this acclaimed Henson TV show
- 33:29premiered on the sci-fi Network. Anthony.
- 33:36Farscape. It is Farscape Question 2.
- 33:39Sesame Workshops Co owned television channel premiered at
- 33:43the start of the year. What was it called Patrick is?
- 33:50It noggin it is. Noggin correct Question 3.
- 33:55This 80s Jim Henson series had its first VHS releases in 1999.
- 34:04Anthony. The Storyteller.
- 34:06It is the storyteller, correct? Question four In an episode of
- 34:12Bear in the Big Blue House from this year, which of Bear's
- 34:16friends form a secret society called The Toilet Tears?
- 34:24Patrick is. It pip and pop.
- 34:27It is Pip and Pop, correct Fun fact about that episode that I
- 34:32have to say here because Lord knows when else I'm going to get
- 34:35to say it. Mitchell Kriegman, creator of
- 34:38Bear in the Big Blue House, said that that episode was created
- 34:42during a point at which Bear in the Big Blue House was so
- 34:44respected by Disney that he could get away with murder.
- 34:48He wrote the episode. Disney said that he could not
- 34:51air it and he said this is educationally relevant.
- 34:55Got educators to back him up and Disney was forced to air the
- 34:59toilet tears episode of Bear in the Big Blue House, which they
- 35:02did not want to air. Oh, that's so funny.
- 35:06Question 5 Sesame Street's 30th season ended in 1999.
- 35:12This was the final season of credited work for which Sesame
- 35:16Street crew member Anthony John Stone.
- 35:24It's not John Stone. I think.
- 35:26I think I know who it is. Patrick, do you know I.
- 35:29Don't know if I know. Oh, Raposo.
- 35:32Joe Raposo. It's not Raposo, Anthony, Do you
- 35:35know? Is it Jeff Moss?
- 35:36It is Jeff Moss. Yes, I I realized as soon as I
- 35:39see. It Yeah, he died around this
- 35:40time, right? Question 6 In January 1999, we
- 35:46met the most infamous Sesame Street character of all.
- 35:50Who is this new character who holds the honor of being the
- 35:53only recurring Sesame Street character that Elmo actively
- 35:56dislikes? Patrick?
- 36:02Rocco. It is Rocco the Rock, First
- 36:05appearance January 1999 Question Seven in the TV special Cinder
- 36:12Elmo. This Golden Globe winner played
- 36:15the role of Princess charming Anthony Keri Russell.
- 36:23It is Keri Russell. Correct Star Wars Episode 9 star
- 36:27Keri Russell. Correct.
- 36:28Show some respect. Zori bliss.
- 36:31Sorry. Saw it once.
- 36:34Would you believe I still haven't seen it?
- 36:36That's that's fine. Yes, I know.
- 36:40Comment. Listen, this is not a Star Wars
- 36:45podcast. Even though I was just talking
- 36:47about Gasgano, question 8/19/99 was truly Elmo's year.
- 36:54He appeared singing. Do you hear what I hear on this
- 36:57celebrity's Christmas album, Patrick?
- 37:05Rosie O'Donnell. It is Rosie O'Donnell, correct.
- 37:09Patrick, did you actually know that or was that a guess?
- 37:11You know, I had that CD. Come on.
- 37:17Oh. Patrick also featuring Billy
- 37:19Joel. Patrick, you truly are in a
- 37:24league of your own question. Nine in the 1999 book The
- 37:29Muppets Mixed Up Christmas, Piggy can't find her Christmas
- 37:33decorations. Things get even worse when her
- 37:36friends try to help because they can only find Anthony.
- 37:45I heard extensive wardrobe. No.
- 37:51What? You don't know this one,
- 37:52Patrick? $5,000,000 in a paper bag on the
- 37:56side of the road. I'm I'm I'm actually going to
- 38:01take issue with the question because the question was Miss
- 38:06Piggy's friends helper. Miss Piggy doesn't have any
- 38:09friends. Famously, she hates everyone but
- 38:12herself and Kermit, who she only likes for sexual purposes.
- 38:16She has no friends and she never has.
- 38:20I do think I know what it is. OK, so hold on, I can throw this
- 38:25out and give neither a few points, which is what I was
- 38:28going to do anyway. Patrick, do you have a guess?
- 38:32Rosie, O'Donnell. Patrick, you truly are in a
- 38:41league of your own. There's no crying at the mixed
- 38:45up Christmas. Betty Rubble is here.
- 38:53Yeah, the problem is I can only think of one Rosie O'Donnell
- 38:56movie. Yeah, and it's and it's wide
- 39:00awake. M Night Channel had a debut.
- 39:05Which we all definitely watched. Everyone saw wide awake where
- 39:08she plays a nun. Anyway, the answer is as you'd
- 39:13know if you looked at the cover of.
- 39:20The answer is as you'd know if you looked at the cover of The
- 39:24Muppets Mixed Up Christmas. I don't know why this is funny
- 39:28to me. The answer is as you'd know if
- 39:33you looked at the cover of The Muppets Mixed Up Christmas.
- 39:35The answer is decorations for all the other holidays.
- 39:42That's why it's mixed up, yes. And.
- 39:47Missus basil E Frankweiler is overwhelmed by how mixed up this
- 39:51is. The final question in this
- 39:58Truly, truly, I have no idea what's going on in this round.
- 40:05Another Christmas book from the same year, A Very Muppet
- 40:09Christmas, contains Muppet themed parody lyrics for classic
- 40:13Christmas carols. The Statler and Waldorf song is
- 40:16a parody of God, Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and it is called
- 40:20Please Rest Ye. Wait, Patrick, did you?
- 40:28I did. I.
- 40:29Did sorry, I think that was you? Yeah.
- 40:31Do you know the answer? Isn't it?
- 40:33Is it Grumpy gentleman? It is Grumpy Gentleman.
- 40:36I think I had this book. You started saying that and I
- 40:38was like, wait, I know what this is.
- 40:41Yeah. Yeah, and now I want this book
- 40:44and I'm I need to record them all.
- 40:47But anyway, now you have some things to discuss at the next
- 40:5390s themed party you go to. And hey, as long as we're in a
- 40:58time machine, let's play our favorite time themed game beat.
- 41:03The. Time Idris Elba, Zooey
- 41:07Deschanel, Hugh Jackman, Aaliyah Shaka, Zach Galifianakis,
- 41:14Michael B Jordan, Bobby Moynihan What do these actors have in
- 41:20common? They were all on TV.
- 41:22Yes, but no. They all had their theatrical
- 41:26film debuts in 1999. Yeah, Wikipedia has a list of
- 41:33this. And it was super interesting.
- 41:35There was a ton. That was only some that I
- 41:39thought were the most surprising to me.
- 41:41What? Was Bobby in in 1999 I.
- 41:44Have no He might. How old was he in 99?
- 41:48He'd be like in his he'd be in his early 20s, right?
- 41:50Yeah, probably in 75. He probably would have just been
- 41:55out of high schoolish. I mean, now I have to Look, I'm
- 41:57sorry. It's OK, we'll get into.
- 41:59We'll get into what the trivia is, but.
- 42:02Yeah. Aaliyah Shawcott was definitely
- 42:05young in. 19 Yeah, she was. Well, because she was on state
- 42:08of grace not that long after that, though.
- 42:10When's that? That's 2002.
- 42:12But this is theatrical film debuts.
- 42:15We're talking. 2001. I feel like she was a kid in a
- 42:18movie, Like if you there's like a.
- 42:20She clearly was. Yeah.
- 42:22Yeah, because. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:23She's like my age, so she was definitely not even a teenager.
- 42:26At the time, she's got to be older than you because Arrested
- 42:28Development starts in 2003 and she's like and she's like 1514
- 42:34there. I mean, right?
- 42:35She must have been born in the late 80s.
- 42:37Eighty 98889 would be my guess. Yeah, 89.
- 42:40So she's two years older than I am.
- 42:42It says he's in something called 9 The Hard Way, which only has
- 42:48him and one other man in the cast, so I'm genuinely.
- 42:51Not sure. It's probably like some Shorty
- 42:53maid in college or something. You know, like.
- 42:55Yeah, well, listen, Wikipedia says that 1999 was Bobby
- 42:59Moynihan's theatrical film debut.
- 43:02The Year of Moynihan. That's what we called it.
- 43:06I remember everyone was talking about Bobby Moynihan.
- 43:11I said this man one day will appear in two separate live
- 43:18Muppet shows. Can we can we talk as long as
- 43:21we're as long as we are digressing, talking about Bobby
- 43:25Moynihan? It always makes me sad that
- 43:28there's no pithy clip of Bobby Moynihan on Larry King.
- 43:32And now it's too late, because we got Ben Schwartz getting
- 43:36Larry to do a Sonic voice and we got Danny Pootie saying Larry,
- 43:39I'm on Duck Tales, and we don't have Bobby Moynihan, the third
- 43:43nephew. We don't.
- 43:45Saying anything to Larry and it's an it's a tricky.
- 43:47Ever. I wonder if he ever met Larry.
- 43:49Next time I see him, I will ask him if he ever met Larry.
- 43:52Let me know please let me. Know an addendum to this podcast
- 43:55that'd. Be great, Patrick.
- 43:56Next time you see him, can you ask him about the movie he's in
- 43:59in 19? 98 I was almost typing up a text
- 44:03message saying. And I do have to say, if you
- 44:07want to hear more from Bobby Moynihan on this very podcast
- 44:10feed, he recorded an episode with our friends Joe Hennis and
- 44:15Jared Faircloth for their podcast to introduce our guest
- 44:18star. He was the titular guest star.
- 44:21He was. Joe and Jared were the titular
- 44:24hour. Oh, were you going to say that?
- 44:26I'm sorry. It's OK.
- 44:27I was going to say they were the titular to introduce, so yours
- 44:31was better anyway. So if Idris Elba, Zooey
- 44:36Deschanel, Hugh Jackman and Co all had their theatrical film
- 44:40debuts in 1999, that got me thinking.
- 44:44Which Muppet and Sesame Street characters made their theatrical
- 44:48film debuts in 1999? That's why in this round of Beat
- 44:53the Time you'll take turns naming existing Muppet or Sesame
- 44:58characters who made their theatrical film debuts in
- 45:03Muppets From Space or The Adventures of Elbow and
- 45:07Grouchland. Now be careful.
- 45:10I'm only counting named characters who had previously
- 45:13appeared on Muppet TV shows or on the television show Sesame
- 45:18Street. I am not counting new characters
- 45:21like grizzy, unnamed characters like the many alien Gonzos or
- 45:28and this is important, the various puppets from the animal
- 45:32show like Dikembe the Gemsbach who just kept appearing and
- 45:37stuff in this era and technically our characters, but
- 45:41no one is going to guess Custer the bison.
- 45:45So we are going to exclude those characters.
- 45:50My favorite thing about this is no one is going to guess this,
- 45:53but I have to make it clear that you can't guess this.
- 45:57Because no, no, no. Because you guys weren't going
- 45:59to. But there's somebody at home.
- 46:01There's. Somebody listening.
- 46:02Right, right, right. Look, someone wrote the article
- 46:05about Dikembe the Gemsbach on Muffet.
- 46:09Wicked. So someone knows him.
- 46:11And let me tell you, I sat there and I said, oh, that explains
- 46:17the random Gemspach waiting on line to see a Maul Santa in the
- 46:22Bear in the Big Blue House Christmas special.
- 46:25So I could now suddenly care more about this African antelope
- 46:31than any other Muppet. But I won't.
- 46:34So depending on how you count it, there's somewhere between 17
- 46:38and 20 named characters from Muppet TV shows and from Sesame
- 46:43Street who had not appeared in theatrical movies before
- 46:47appearing in either one of these films.
- 46:51In classic Beat the Time fashion will go back and forth between
- 46:56the two of you to see who can name more.
- 46:59If you can't remember one or you get the answer wrong, your
- 47:02opponent will have a chance to steal.
- 47:06So we are going to start with Anthony Anthony.
- 47:12Name a Muppet or Sesame Street character who made their first
- 47:17film appearance in 1999. Doctor Phil Van Neuter got gotta
- 47:22start there. Doctor Phil.
- 47:23Van Neuter Correct Patrick. I mean starting so strong,
- 47:30Johnny Fiama. Johnny Fiama, correct, Anthony.
- 47:35Sal. Sal Manella.
- 47:40But. Sal is put.
- 47:42That puppet is played by Jerry Nelson in Mobile Treasure
- 47:44Island. That is not.
- 47:46That is not the character site. It is not.
- 47:49Listen, good point. And here's Here's what's funny.
- 47:52Here's what's funny. I made that distinction for some
- 47:54of the other characters. Forgot to for Sal.
- 47:57Good for good, for you for catching that.
- 47:59But I am we. Just needed.
- 48:00We needed to have the conversation.
- 48:02Sure. No.
- 48:02No, I get it. I get it.
- 48:03Clear the. Air I just.
- 48:05I just. Can the gem Spock of Greece?
- 48:09I can just so clearly see the the Sal puppet Jerry Nelson's
- 48:13voice coming out of it saying the devil himself would have to
- 48:16call him scum that that ain't Sal.
- 48:20Come on. You pitched that a little higher
- 48:24and that sounds like Sal, though.
- 48:25Your your version of. It My version.
- 48:28OK, let's see. I'll try to do it like Jerry
- 48:30Nelson. I can't do it.
- 48:33The devil himself would have to call him scum.
- 48:37Well, that was pretty good. All right.
- 48:40You got a whole season of that coming up, so.
- 48:43Can't wait. That's my favorite song in that
- 48:45movie. That's gonna actually be the
- 48:46theme song, right, for this, this season of moving.
- 48:49You know, good question. I don't know, I hope.
- 48:51So you you singing, is that? It's gonna be me singing Love
- 48:58Let Us here. All right.
- 48:59The point is, the point is there is another character.
- 49:02Spoilers. There are other characters on
- 49:05that list who fit a similar bill to Sal.
- 49:09And we're we're counting that or not?
- 49:11We are counting Sal. I forgot to put an asterisk next
- 49:14to him, but I put an asterisk next to these other characters.
- 49:17Patrick Bobo the bear. Bobo the Bear, One of the ones
- 49:21who has those asterisks because he is in Muppets Take Manhattan,
- 49:26but with different eyes and not Bobo the bear.
- 49:30And he also does. He also does the honeypot dance
- 49:33in the theatrical film Mr. Willoughby's Christmas Time.
- 49:37Theatrical film. I know.
- 49:39I've never seen that. Oh, it's you gotta see it.
- 49:42It's it's bad in a really fun way.
- 49:45It's like it's it's a real good, bad.
- 49:47Well, I have not seen it either. Great.
- 49:49When you start breaking it down minute by minute, I'll come on.
- 49:52All right, I can't wait. I can't wait.
- 49:55No, Pepe. We didn't say Pepe.
- 49:57Yet we did not say Pepe Anthony is correct.
- 50:00Pepe, Patrick. Chip.
- 50:07Chip correct. Oh, good one.
- 50:10Anthony. So I'll switch tracks, baby
- 50:12bear. Baby bear correct.
- 50:16I mean, if we're going for Chip, you might as well say Zandra.
- 50:20Zandra is also there. Correct might as well.
- 50:24Or as well, get it out of the way at the.
- 50:26Time. Darcy Darcy from Muppet Muppet
- 50:30Real World Anthony. Yeah, let's say.
- 50:36I mean Zoe. Zoe correct.
- 50:39She's in that movie, yeah. Patrick.
- 50:44Rosita. Rosita correct.
- 50:50Let's see. So other sesame ones.
- 50:54So this might be wrong, but I don't think he's in.
- 50:57Follow that bird. Mr. Johnson.
- 50:59Mr. Johnson is not in Follow that bird, correct?
- 51:03And he is. There is like a waiter Grover
- 51:06scene at the beginning of Elmo and Graf, right?
- 51:09Patrick, Zip, Zipity ZAP, Zipity.
- 51:12Hold on, why don't I have Zipity ZAP on my list?
- 51:14Because I feel like he's. Like he's like on the beach,
- 51:17isn't he? He is definitely there.
- 51:19I'm gonna double check, but I think I just forgot to write him
- 51:21down. I think he's on the beach.
- 51:23He is, So I will definitely give you a point for Zipity ZAP
- 51:29Anthony, let's. See.
- 51:36Not telly. Because he's in.
- 51:37Follow that bird. He sure is pretty.
- 51:39Prominently. He was a fairly new character
- 51:43for Follow That Bird. Right, right.
- 51:45Yeah, Yeah. Elmo's in Follow that bird very
- 51:48briefly. So it's not Elmo.
- 51:50That's why we can put him on the DVD box, Anthony.
- 51:53That's right. That's right.
- 51:56I'm trying to think is like Roxy Marie in it.
- 52:00Roxy Marie is not in it. I'm sorry.
- 52:03So we're going to go back to Patrick.
- 52:07I think his name is Carter. His name is Carter.
- 52:12And listen, listen, Carter is one of the other ones that I
- 52:15have, the two asterisks. Because Carter was the female
- 52:21Jerry and the Atrix member who sings Days Go passing into years
- 52:26in in the wedding scene of Muppets Take Manhattan.
- 52:32Yeah, it's it's repurposed. Sure.
- 52:35Yeah. I wonder if Carter still exists.
- 52:37Probably we should. Clarify that we are talking
- 52:40about Howard Tubman's Butler. Here.
- 52:42Like. Patrick Patrick.
- 52:45He's a woman again in Haunted Mansion.
- 52:51Oh, interesting. And it's listed listed in the
- 52:54credits as Miss Cartier. Do you?
- 52:57Think they rebuilt him that just for like so long for like I
- 53:00have. No idea.
- 53:01And I don't know why. Again, and this is me saying
- 53:05this, I don't know why they keep changing the gender.
- 53:10Anthony, we're going back to you.
- 53:13OK, I'm trying to think of. I'm sure there's like someone is
- 53:16Grungetta in it. Grungetta is not, but she isn't.
- 53:21Follow that, Bert. She is sure OK.
- 53:23She's she's with with Louis and Bob at Mr. Hooper's.
- 53:29Oh, sure, yeah. Yeah.
- 53:30Holding down the Fort. Right.
- 53:33At least I'm pretty sure. I think that's right.
- 53:36I think I'm right. All right.
- 53:37Anyway, Patrick, do you have another guess?
- 53:41Is Stinky in it? Stinky is not in it.
- 53:46OK, Horatio of the elephant. Horatio of the elephant not in
- 53:50it. So I think we're going to have
- 53:51to call it here. Yeah, I think.
- 53:54So so characters you were missing.
- 53:57We will start with the characters from Muppets from
- 54:00Space Clifford. Oh, sure, of course.
- 54:05Wow. Wow.
- 54:07He. Tries to hook up with Tom
- 54:10Cruise's ex-wife. It's true.
- 54:13Tom Cruise's future ex-wife. Future ex-wife.
- 54:16Yeah, absolutely. Her name?
- 54:19'S Katie. Her name is Katie Holmes.
- 54:20I don't want to get backlash for only referring to her as Tom
- 54:23View, Tom Cruise's ex-wife. She's a very talented actress.
- 54:25Should have stayed with the Batman movies.
- 54:27It was a mistake. She's bet much better than
- 54:29Maggie Gyllenhaal is in those movies.
- 54:31She's also just pretty good in other stuff too, but.
- 54:33Yes, 100. Percent Listen, it was funnier
- 54:35the way that you delivered the line I liked.
- 54:37I liked it when she sang on my own at the talent show.
- 54:42I would have counted. Was I the only one who watched
- 54:45Dawson's Creek? Correct.
- 54:47See the problem? See, it's it's 'cause it's
- 54:49'cause we're young. I'm.
- 54:50I'm older. I'm so much older than both.
- 54:52This movie is the most exposure to Dawson's Creek I've ever had.
- 54:56This is the most I've ever seen those characters talk.
- 54:59My brother was like all in on Dawson's Creek, so I like it's
- 55:03one of I was in the room, I enjoyed it, but Christopher was
- 55:05like he was all about it. It's one of those things like
- 55:08you're six years older than me and like that's a huge
- 55:13difference when Dawson's Creek is on.
- 55:15Air, right? Yeah, Yeah.
- 55:16I was 13. I was 13 when it premiered.
- 55:18And it's the kind of thing that I didn't go back, you know what
- 55:20I mean? Of course not.
- 55:21Yeah, There's other stuff that like, Oh yeah, I didn't watch,
- 55:24you know, in 1999 that like I watched now and I think it's
- 55:28good. I have no desire to do that for
- 55:30Dawson's. Great.
- 55:31All right. Well, Joey sang on my own at the
- 55:33talent show and she nailed it. OK.
- 55:36All right. That's a tough song to sing.
- 55:38I I know. That's the thing.
- 55:40That's the thing. I've gone back and watched Les
- 55:42Mis, so I know that. And then I would have counted,
- 55:48although this is what I mean. When I said like 17 or 20, I
- 55:52would have counted Andy and Randy Pig and Mr. Poodle Pants.
- 55:56More like in photographs they. Appear in photographs.
- 55:59So if you really wanted to argue, I would have counted that
- 56:03from Sesame Street. I would have counted if you
- 56:06really wanted to fight me. The dingers.
- 56:11I don't consider them to be named characters, but they are
- 56:14not in follow that bird. They are only in Elmo and
- 56:16Grouchland, but also would have counted because I never said it
- 56:21had to be Sesame Street Muppets Gina and Ruthie.
- 56:25I was gonna. I was thinking about Gina I
- 56:27forgot about. Ruthie I I never said it had to
- 56:30be Muppets, so that's kind of a trick question.
- 56:31Here's a fun question that I learned from Muppet Wiki.
- 56:34What is Gina's last name? I knew this at some point I.
- 56:38Don't know. Apparently, it's Doctor Gina
- 56:42Jefferson. Oh, that sounds familiar.
- 56:45Yeah, her family had that sitcom.
- 56:46She was the the kid on The Jeffersons, right?
- 56:49Yeah, that's what it was about. Yeah, she's moving.
- 56:52Yeah, she's. Moving on up to Sesame Street.
- 56:54Yeah, she's Lionel's little sister.
- 56:57Anyway, hold on. Let me just calculate the points
- 56:59you each squared 1/2. Oh, I thought you were
- 57:02calculating the edit point for that joke.
- 57:04Yeah, no, just to edit that out. Oh no, I don't.
- 57:06I don't. Listen, there's no joke too
- 57:08stupid for me. Yeah, her dad was Earl
- 57:11Sinclair's boss 4/5. 6 All right.
- 57:19And listen, we can all agree there's no bigger celebrity than
- 57:26doctor Gina Jefferson, but I think we have to give credit to
- 57:31some other folks in our final regular trivia game.
- 57:36That's right, it's time for our favorite celebrity game.
- 57:41And certainly both of your favorite celebrity game mystery
- 57:46guest. You know, like I said before,
- 57:49some people consider 1999 to be one of the most important years
- 57:53for movies, and truly, there were some wild blockbusters this
- 57:57year. Now, this may surprise you, but
- 58:01neither Muppets from Space nor Elmo and Grouchland cracked the
- 58:07top 12 highest grossing movies for the year.
- 58:11I haven't checked, but I think that they're #13 and #14
- 58:16respectively. Yeah, I think so.
- 58:19I haven't. Checked.
- 58:20That's not bad. If that's true, well.
- 58:22That's not true. Let let me live in this.
- 58:28Reality I'm doing a bit. Let me let me live in the
- 58:32reality where moments from space was #13 highest grosser for the
- 58:36year. Let me have that.
- 58:39Well, anyway, while the top 12 movies didn't have any Muppets
- 58:44in them, they do feature celebrities with Muppet
- 58:47connections. So in this round, I'm going to
- 58:51describe a time a celebrity worked with The Muppets.
- 58:56With Sesame Street or with Henson.
- 58:59You'll buzz in and identify the celebrity answer correctly to
- 59:03earn two points. Here's the thing.
- 59:07All of these celebrities had a major role in one of the 12
- 59:11highest grossing movies of 1999. So you will also get a bonus
- 59:17point if you identify the blockbuster film from 1999 that
- 59:22this celebrity appeared in. I have shuffled the order
- 59:28around. So no, the first question is not
- 59:31going to be about the number 12 or #1 film anyway.
- 59:36It'll make sense as we go. Are you ready now?
- 59:39That. Is TV.
- 59:40The phones are lighting up like Vegas.
- 59:42What power? What heat?
- 59:43You're a hit. Not you, him, me, Gonzo.
- 59:48You've got it. Sure wish we could find a cure
- 59:50for it. All right, question. 1-2 years
- 59:53earlier he played the lead in a film with creature shop effects,
- 59:58namely the hilarious George of the Jungle Anthony.
- 1:00:07It's Brendan Frazier and it's the Mummy.
- 1:00:09It is Brendan Frazier and his 1999 blockbuster was The Mummy
- 1:00:15Question two in 1999's Muppet parody calendar, Miss Piggy
- 1:00:20appeared on a parody poster for one of this actress's most
- 1:00:23famous films, namely Piggy Woman Anthony.
- 1:00:31Again by a second, Anthony. It's Julia Roberts, Piggy Woman
- 1:00:35star Julia Roberts. It is Piggy Woman Star.
- 1:00:38It's it's Notting Hill. It is notting.
- 1:00:40Hill. It is Notting Hill, not Notting
- 1:00:44Hill. Patrick, can you steal?
- 1:00:46Is it Gary Marshall's own runaway bride?
- 1:00:49It is Gary Marshall's. Own Runaway Bride.
- 1:00:52I guess so, yeah. I'm I'm surprised that was the
- 1:00:54bigger hit of the two, honestly. I mean again, I just looked this
- 1:00:57up on. People were so excited to see
- 1:01:01Gear and Roberts back together. Again.
- 1:01:04Question Question 3 Alongside Bobo the Bear, he played an
- 1:01:08angry airport security guard named Officer Mimi in letters to
- 1:01:12Santa Patrick Nathan Lane. It is Nathan Lane.
- 1:01:25I don't think I know the movie, though.
- 1:01:30Anthony, any guess? 1999.
- 1:01:36I will tell you he is not the lead, he is a.
- 1:01:38Lion King is much earlier. Nathan Lane.
- 1:01:41I can't even think of anything It's producers is later.
- 1:01:44Here's a. Clue.
- 1:01:45Lion King 1 1/2 is later. Yeah, well, Lion King 1 1/2,
- 1:01:48What a great movie Birdcage is earlier.
- 1:01:51That's like 96, right? Here's a.
- 1:01:52Clue. The sequel to this movie.
- 1:01:55Features Oh, it's Stuart Little. It is Stuart Little Anthony, you
- 1:01:58got it. He plays the cat.
- 1:02:00He does play the cat. Written by Written by Rosie
- 1:02:03O'donnell's friend. At night, yeah.
- 1:02:07Question 4/3 and Elbow Question four.
- 1:02:10He guest starred on Sesame Street as one of his famous
- 1:02:13characters, helping Telly create the totally excellent video show
- 1:02:17Telly's Town Anthony. So that's Mike Myers.
- 1:02:25That is Mike Myers. And it's it's Austin Powers, the
- 1:02:28spy who shake. Correct.
- 1:02:30A movie that made something like four times as much as the
- 1:02:33original. Correct.
- 1:02:34That one is in the top, top 12, yeah.
- 1:02:36It was. It was massive.
- 1:02:38Question Five, since he also had another ABC show at the same
- 1:02:44time as the Muppet sitcom. He appeared in the second
- 1:02:47episode Hostile Makeover to Torment Kermit on the ABC lot
- 1:02:55Anthony. It's Laurence.
- 1:02:57Fishburne It is Laurence Fishburne Anthony The Movie.
- 1:03:01It's the matrix, of course. It is of course the matrix.
- 1:03:05I know this sounds like the most basic complaint ever, but my
- 1:03:09letters are not sending. I'm like, I have to hit it like
- 1:03:13four times for it to go, OK, we're going to try this again.
- 1:03:17OK. OK, question 6.
- 1:03:20Prior to appearing in this film, this character appeared in a
- 1:03:23variety of computer generated inserts for Sesame Street
- 1:03:31Anthony. Hey Arnold It is.
- 1:03:38It is it is not. Hey, Arnold, I.
- 1:03:40Don't know what it is because we've been saying actors and now
- 1:03:44you said this character. I know so.
- 1:03:46This feels like it's from a different game.
- 1:03:48It's not Steven Root as Milton from Office Space.
- 1:03:51It is not Steven Root as Milton from Office Space.
- 1:03:54The correct answer is Luxo Junior.
- 1:03:58Oh, is in Toy Story, is in the Luxo as in short.
- 1:04:00As in Toy Story Two, Question Seven, he appeared on Sesame
- 1:04:06Street to sing the Emmy nominated song about Elmo, where
- 1:04:09he played guitar and comedically struggled to find words that
- 1:04:12rhyme with Elmo Anthony. It's Adam Sandler.
- 1:04:20That is Adam Sandler from the movie. 1999 Is it little Nikki?
- 1:04:25No, not Little Nikki. 1999. Patrick.
- 1:04:29Is it Big Daddy? It is Big Daddy.
- 1:04:31And that makes more sense. You had the wrong size you were
- 1:04:34thinking. Had the wrong.
- 1:04:35Size. You're thinking of a little
- 1:04:37nick. It's just.
- 1:04:39A Also Anthony, it's real cute that you thought little Nicky
- 1:04:42was in the club. Earlier I I knew it wasn't.
- 1:04:46That's why I said, is it little Nicky?
- 1:04:48No, 'cause it couldn't like, no way, man.
- 1:04:51Like that movie was like, not a hit, right?
- 1:04:53That's his first like, not hit, right?
- 1:04:56Even I knew that was a flop. Yeah, but I don't know about
- 1:04:59this crazy other list you're looking at, Becca.
- 1:05:01I don't know. But all I know, little Nicky, is
- 1:05:03#7 on that list. Like, I don't know.
- 1:05:06I went to, I went to high school with this kid named Josh
- 1:05:08Chenecki, who used to call himself Little Necky after that
- 1:05:11movie came out. That's true.
- 1:05:13Question Eight. She did ballet on Sesame Street
- 1:05:16while dressed as an elephant. Patrick.
- 1:05:23Natalie Portman. It is Natalie Portman.
- 1:05:25Far Wars Episode One, The Phantom Menace.
- 1:05:30Famous friend of Gascano. Do you think they met?
- 1:05:37Do you think Queen Amidala ever met Gascano?
- 1:05:42Well, he probably came to the wedding.
- 1:05:45All those pod races were at the wedding.
- 1:05:46I would love it if they're getting married by the lake in
- 1:05:49Naboo and the only thing is the camera was not turned around to
- 1:05:53see Mahonic and Gascono. Yeah, wait a minute, Anthony.
- 1:05:57We know for a fact that only two people.
- 1:05:59Were at the wedding. I know, I know.
- 1:06:02They were robots. They were our good.
- 1:06:05Good Friends, Muppet Show, Guest Star and Sesame Street Guest
- 1:06:08Star, C3PO and R2D2. That's true.
- 1:06:12Those guys were on that. Yeah.
- 1:06:14Anyway, question 9. Three years later, he would
- 1:06:19voice the Creature Shop character Barry Barrington in
- 1:06:23the greatest film ever released, The Country Bears.
- 1:06:32Patrick. Sorry I hit it so many times,
- 1:06:35'cause it wasn't going through. That is Hailey Joel Osmond.
- 1:06:39It is. Friend of Rosie O'Donnell and
- 1:06:42night the 6th Sense. True.
- 1:06:45It happened. Yeah, I talked about that movie
- 1:06:49a couple nights ago at ASCAT at UCB.
- 1:06:51The show I do because the woman who did monologues was this
- 1:06:54woman named Misty Rosas who plays Queal on the Mandalorian,
- 1:06:57The Ugg not from season one because she is the in suit
- 1:07:00performer for Barry Barrington. Oh, is that right?
- 1:07:04Yeah, Cool. Cool.
- 1:07:06And Haley Joelesman also went on to create those apples.
- 1:07:11Like craft Hard Site. No, it's on what we do in the
- 1:07:16shadows. And the.
- 1:07:20Creator of those apples. All right, anyways.
- 1:07:23Worth worth noting, and this will this will be.
- 1:07:25I know Anthony knows this, but I don't know if Patrick does.
- 1:07:29I am obsessed with the movie The Country Bears.
- 1:07:31I genuinely, genuinely, genuinely love it.
- 1:07:35I just got married a month ago and the thank you and the last
- 1:07:40song at our wedding was straight to the heart of love.
- 1:07:44We we all danced and sang along to straight to the heart of
- 1:07:48love. Amazing people.
- 1:07:49People were waving, waving their phones in the air like lighters.
- 1:07:53It was it was truly, truly an amazing experience.
- 1:07:56I love that fun, weird movie. Yeah.
- 1:07:59Anyway, agreed Question 10. In the open and close episode of
- 1:08:05Elmo's World, Elmo's TV announces that coming up next is
- 1:08:10the film Closed Encounters of the Third Kind, starring this
- 1:08:15appropriately named actress Anthony.
- 1:08:23Glenn Close. It is Glenn Close. 1999, though?
- 1:08:28Oh, it's. Tarzan it is Tarzan.
- 1:08:30She's correct. She's.
- 1:08:30Tarzan's mom, Yeah. She is Tarzan's mom.
- 1:08:33Carla's gonna be his mother now, yeah.
- 1:08:35I couldn't. I couldn't do Rosie O'Donnell.
- 1:08:37That would have been too obvious.
- 1:08:38And believe it or not, the others don't seem to have any
- 1:08:40connections. I couldn't find a Mini.
- 1:08:43Wayne Knight never never ordered The Muppets.
- 1:08:46Wayne Knight in. And he's in Tarzan.
- 1:08:48Yeah, that's right. The elephant.
- 1:08:50He's the elephant in Tarzan. But maybe he doesn't.
- 1:08:52It just seems like someone who would have crossed paths with
- 1:08:54them at some. I don't think he.
- 1:08:56Did I don't think Wayne Knight does, yeah.
- 1:08:59Lance Hendrickson, Either, yeah. Who plays Tarzan's stepdad?
- 1:09:03Who hates him? Yeah.
- 1:09:04Huge year, huge year for Clayton performer Brian Blessed, who
- 1:09:07also played Boss. Now, boss, Yeah.
- 1:09:10Episode 1. The Fan.
- 1:09:10Right. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:11But doesn't seem to have a Muppet connection again.
- 1:09:14And he was he. Was on, he was on Doctor Who.
- 1:09:17He has that going for him. We talked about Rosie O'Donnell
- 1:09:19too much, so I had to skip Turk. Right.
- 1:09:22Yeah, yeah, sure. She was trashing the camp, Yeah.
- 1:09:25Pepe the King Prawn appeared on a Christmas episode of her short
- 1:09:29lived talk show where he was fascinated by the wreath pattern
- 1:09:35on this talk show host's chest. I think Patrick buzzed in I.
- 1:09:46Didn't, did you? I did.
- 1:09:47I. Did, I'm sorry, sorry.
- 1:09:49Sorry. Is it Bonnie Hunt?
- 1:09:52It is Bonnie Hunt. Patrick.
- 1:09:54I was genuinely wondering if you were the one who put that clip
- 1:09:57on YouTube. It was not it usually.
- 1:09:59It usually is me, but it's not in this.
- 1:10:01Yeah, Toy Story 2. She's not in Toy Story 2, but
- 1:10:07you do get two points. Anthony, what was the Bonnie
- 1:10:10Hunt blockbuster of 1999? 1999 I don't know.
- 1:10:16I can't think of it cause Jerry Maguire's earlier correctly
- 1:10:19which was a big hit 1999 Bunny Hunt.
- 1:10:26Is it an animated movie? It is not an animated movie.
- 1:10:31It's not Beethoven. That's related to.
- 1:10:34It's not Rain, Man. I should note I have a
- 1:10:37Beethoven. I don't think you can see him,
- 1:10:38but I have a Beethoven on my shelf over there.
- 1:10:41That's 80s robot. Anyway, no idea.
- 1:10:44The answer is the Green Mile. Oh yeah, sure.
- 1:10:48I don't. Even remember her being in that.
- 1:10:50But I believe you. She's I, You know, weirdly
- 1:10:53enough, not a lot of Tom Hanks connections with The Muppets,
- 1:10:57which is. Feels like there should be.
- 1:11:00He's. Definitely one of those guys.
- 1:11:02He's one of those guys who, until recently, Weird Al was one
- 1:11:04of them like that, you know? And the last question, I do not
- 1:11:10believe any actors in the tenth, highest grossing film of 1999
- 1:11:15ever worked with The Muppets. But you should know that the
- 1:11:18state where it takes place is the same state where Jim Henson
- 1:11:24went to college and where Kevin Clash was born.
- 1:11:27What state, Anthony? Both Maryland.
- 1:11:35It is Maryland Anthony what was the 10th highest grossing film
- 1:11:39of 1999 that took place in Maryland and features no actors
- 1:11:45with Muppet connections. Took place in Maryland.
- 1:11:48Not a single actor with. A Muppet Connection.
- 1:11:50It's a Baltimore movie I didn't know.
- 1:11:52David Simon wrote the 10th highest grossing movie of 1988.
- 1:11:56I was gonna say it's The Wire season one.
- 1:11:57Yeah, that was. My yeah.
- 1:12:00Yeah, yeah, I think it was some of them.
- 1:12:02Had to have been had to some of the wire cast crossed over.
- 1:12:07Yeah, I don't Michael B Jordan ever worked with Muppets.
- 1:12:09Seems like he would have. He's very prominent in season
- 1:12:12one of The Wire. That's true.
- 1:12:13He is, and this was his first he filmed debuted this year.
- 1:12:17He He's in this movie. No.
- 1:12:19Oh, just this was his film debut 1999, is it?
- 1:12:26No, this he got game just takes place at State College or
- 1:12:28whatever. I don't know.
- 1:12:30I don't know what. It is fun fact I love this
- 1:12:33movie, Patrick. I have no idea.
- 1:12:36I am talking, of course, about The Blair Witch Project.
- 1:12:41Oh, sure. I've never seen it.
- 1:12:42I didn't. I could.
- 1:12:43You could have given me a million years and I never would
- 1:12:46have come. Up it really.
- 1:12:46Never. No, it's it's the only time ever
- 1:12:50that a blockbuster has been released without, like, a single
- 1:12:53celebrity in it. Right.
- 1:12:55Yeah, yeah. Like.
- 1:12:57Yeah, I would not have known that took place in Baltimore
- 1:13:00either. Yeah.
- 1:13:01Anyway, these tenuous Muppet connections are exactly why
- 1:13:06these movies all did so well at the box office.
- 1:13:10And Speaking of, you know, you guys got me thinking maybe
- 1:13:14Muppets from Space and Elmo and Grouchland didn't do so great at
- 1:13:19the box office. So while I look that up, why
- 1:13:24don't we play a quick round of the Anything in the World Prize
- 1:13:27game? As you know, in this round you 2
- 1:13:31will be able to ask me anything in the world literally about The
- 1:13:36Muppets in 1999 or just about 1999.
- 1:13:40I wasn't very clear in my directions, so honestly this is
- 1:13:44going to be weird. As always, if you stump me, you
- 1:13:49will earn 15 points. Anyway, it's a really close
- 1:13:54game, unsurprisingly right now before we enter our Anything in
- 1:13:59the World Prize game. Anthony, you have 76 points.
- 1:14:02Patrick, you have 73 points. Wow.
- 1:14:08It's a close game, so Patrick, why don't you ask me your
- 1:14:13question first? Yeah.
- 1:14:15So I I'm, I'm only going to ask you one.
- 1:14:17I do have four questions and I want you to answer the other
- 1:14:20three once we're done. They don't have to count for
- 1:14:22anything. You know, that sounds like it
- 1:14:25could be we could do it at the end and that could be some Boko.
- 1:14:28Boko OK, I'm going to ask you. Oh God, these are hard to figure
- 1:14:33out which one you want. OK, OK.
- 1:14:36At the beginning of the of Muppets from Space, they are all
- 1:14:40waking up in their house. Rizzo is working out on a on a
- 1:14:45mousetrap. Next to him is a Letterman
- 1:14:48jacket. It is a yellow Letterman jacket.
- 1:14:51It is not the jacket that Rizzo was wearing during the rest of
- 1:14:53the movie. On the back of the jacket it
- 1:14:56says something. What does it say?
- 1:15:00You know, I don't know. And here's the thing.
- 1:15:02I can never even remember what it says on the back of Rizzo's
- 1:15:05actual Letterman. Jacket.
- 1:15:07I don't think it says anything on the back.
- 1:15:09No, there is at least one that does.
- 1:15:11Oh really? I think it's one of those things
- 1:15:13that like, maybe I'm wrong, but either way, I don't know.
- 1:15:16It says cheese for life. You're shockingly close.
- 1:15:28It says the cheese whiz cast and crew, and it's like the whiz.
- 1:15:34You know, that's actually decently funny.
- 1:15:37Sure. Yeah, because.
- 1:15:40But also the rats, including Rizzo, did.
- 1:15:43He's on down the road on The Muppet Show Season 5.
- 1:15:45And the rats are the munchkins in Muppets Wizard of Oz.
- 1:15:50The best movie ever. The the third highest grossing
- 1:15:53movie of all. Time The TV movie that everyone
- 1:15:56hates? Yes.
- 1:15:57I do also want to point out I was trying to find a photo of it
- 1:16:00to send to you. Oh, I did find it.
- 1:16:01Great, but there is a Burger King toy from Europe of Rizzo in
- 1:16:06the Mouse Trap and he is wearing the wrong jacket.
- 1:16:10He actually Rizzo wears that same Cheez Whizz cast party
- 1:16:15jacket in Muppet Classic Theater, which I know cuz we
- 1:16:19just recorded our bonus episode about it podcast.
- 1:16:21No kidding. Interesting.
- 1:16:26Oh, like I see the toy here he is wearing his.
- 1:16:28That's his normal Muppets for like, Muppets Tonight Jacket.
- 1:16:31Also, I was wrong. The jacket I thought was yellow.
- 1:16:33In my brain it was yellow, but it's actually blue.
- 1:16:35OK, well then it's an unfair and I'm not giving you OK.
- 1:16:38Well then I'll give you another question.
- 1:16:39No, no, no. Give you another question.
- 1:16:40It's OK. I give you 15 points.
- 1:16:43Your score is now 88. Great.
- 1:16:49Anthony, do you have a question for me?
- 1:16:51I do. So there are 16 puppeteers who
- 1:16:55are credited on both Muppets from Space and Elmo and
- 1:16:59Grouchland. Five of them are Gimmies, Steve
- 1:17:03Whitmire, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Kevin Clash and Dave
- 1:17:06Goles. I'm not gonna let you guess
- 1:17:08those. I know that.
- 1:17:10You know those. It's interesting that Dave.
- 1:17:12I know that. You know Dave Goles plays the
- 1:17:14giant chicken. I know that.
- 1:17:15You know that. He plays the giant chicken.
- 1:17:21Famous non Sesame Street cast member Dave Golds is in Elmo in
- 1:17:24Grouchland as the Giant Chicken. But of the other eleven, there
- 1:17:30are 11 other puppeteers besides the main characters credited on
- 1:17:34both movies. Can you name three of them?
- 1:17:38OK, Ricky Boyd, OK, Peter Lynn's.
- 1:17:52OK. And I don't know Bruce Bruce
- 1:17:59Lynn Oil. So you got 1 Bruce Lynn oil is
- 1:18:02right great. You got you got one the so Bruce
- 1:18:07Lynn oil and then Bill Beretta surprisingly is credited on Elmo
- 1:18:10and Grouchland. No kidding.
- 1:18:12Yeah. So Bill Beretta's one of them.
- 1:18:15All of the others are people I've never heard of or like,
- 1:18:18maybe seen names in passing. They are John Boone, Lisa
- 1:18:23Consolo, Raoul Gorman, Rob Killen, Bob Lynch, Ed May, Tim
- 1:18:30Parotti, Andy Stone and Lisa Stirs.
- 1:18:35Yeah. See, I knew you wouldn't be
- 1:18:36asking me this if the correct answer was like Peter Lynn's
- 1:18:40Stephanie de Bruzzo and. Right.
- 1:18:43And well and and like like those two, for example, Peter worked
- 1:18:46on Mugsham Space. Stephanie worked on Elmo and
- 1:18:47Grouchland but like not not the other one.
- 1:18:50Yeah. It's like all of the people you
- 1:18:52would think you're you're Drew Massey's you're John Kennedy
- 1:18:55like all worked on on one or the other.
- 1:18:57Yeah. You know I.
- 1:18:59Presume they have to be they. Have to be local, North Carolina
- 1:19:03or wherever they filmed. It right.
- 1:19:04So yeah. So they shot Mugsham Space in
- 1:19:06Wilmington and they shot Elmo and Grouchland in but but.
- 1:19:13So that's why I was surprised that there are like 9 puppeteers
- 1:19:16that I don't know who they are who worked on both.
- 1:19:18Well, here's something interesting about they.
- 1:19:20Shop. They shop both of them in
- 1:19:21Wilmington. Oh, they did.
- 1:19:23Well, there you go then. That's why.
- 1:19:25Those must be locals. Here's something that's really
- 1:19:28interesting about Peter Lynn's and Muppets Muppets from Space
- 1:19:33that I learned from Muppet Wiki and wanted to ask but didn't.
- 1:19:39Can I guess? Yeah.
- 1:19:41Is it that his voice is in the trailer?
- 1:19:44It is that 'cause I knew that a lot of the time the Frank Oz
- 1:19:49characters were performed by other people and then Frank
- 1:19:53dubbed the dialogue. Later in in the trailer, he says
- 1:19:56my hair looks great and it's Peter Lentz.
- 1:19:59Yeah, it's, you know, it's honestly not.
- 1:20:03Awful. It's not bad.
- 1:20:04Yeah, I. Know I never noticed as a kid,
- 1:20:06and I used to watch that trailer all the time.
- 1:20:08Because a normal person would never notice.
- 1:20:10Yeah, but you can tell. Once you know, you can tell.
- 1:20:14That also happens in Elmo and Grouchland.
- 1:20:16Half of Mr. Johnson's dialogue is David Rudman.
- 1:20:19Right. Yeah.
- 1:20:20Yeah. And I was.
- 1:20:20Listening to it and I was like, sounds weird.
- 1:20:22Why does it sound weird? And then the second-half of the
- 1:20:24line is Jerry Nelson. And I'm like, what happened
- 1:20:27here? Well, they just forgot to dub
- 1:20:29part of it, yeah. Yeah, it it there's there's a,
- 1:20:33there's a couple other examples of that happening in like movies
- 1:20:37from this era. I think it happens in.
- 1:20:41What? We just, we just talked about it
- 1:20:43in our I said we just recorded our Muppet Classic theatre
- 1:20:45episode for moving right along. There's a brief moment in that
- 1:20:49where Rizzo runs up to Whisper in Kermit's ear and Rizzo is
- 1:20:52Dave Goals because they didn't die.
- 1:20:54Yes, yes, that's that's one of the ones I was thinking of.
- 1:20:57There's like a Kevin Clash, Statler or Waldorf in Muppets
- 1:21:00Tonight, I think. That would make sense.
- 1:21:03Yeah. He also Kevin, There's a Kevin
- 1:21:06Clash piggy in the Dancing in the Dark music video.
- 1:21:09Piggy has like one or two lines at the end and it's Kevin, yeah.
- 1:21:12Well, Frank wasn't around much at that at that time.
- 1:21:15Like he basically all but quit. But anyway, so Anthony, you have
- 1:21:21also earned 15 points, bringing the score to Anthony 91, Patrick
- 1:21:2688. And hold on a second, let me
- 1:21:32just check check the box office website again.
- 1:21:37Yeah, I got bad news for you guys.
- 1:21:39Muppets from Space and Elmo and Grouchland did not do well my my
- 1:21:46whole world view. Why did I even why did I even
- 1:21:52record this episode? The These movies didn't do well
- 1:21:55at all. Well, from space made like $14
- 1:21:59million or something, right? Like, well, here's here's the
- 1:22:02thing. Oh, that's gonna be the
- 1:22:05question. I'm sorry.
- 1:22:06Listen, yeah, it's almost like I was building to this as my band.
- 1:22:10No, it's OK Well, it's still anybody's game except Muppets
- 1:22:16from Space and Elmo and Grouchland.
- 1:22:18They're they lost. But it's still either of your
- 1:22:21game, because we are going to end with our final round.
- 1:22:26Say the word. In this round you can wager any
- 1:22:30amount of points. The winner will get those
- 1:22:32points, the loser will lose them.
- 1:22:35And well, seeing as I just learned these box office
- 1:22:40numbers, I might as well ask a little bit about them.
- 1:22:44Box Office Mojo lists the top 200 highest grossing films from
- 1:22:491999, in order from highest grossing to lowest grossing of
- 1:22:55the two, Elmo and Grouchland and Muppets from Space.
- 1:23:00Which movie ranks higher in total gross, not accounting for
- 1:23:06the film's budget? And whichever one you say was
- 1:23:10higher, I want you to tell me what number it is on the list.
- 1:23:16So if number one is The Phantom Menace, #2 is The Sixth Sense.
- 1:23:21You are going to choose either Muppets From Space or Elmo and
- 1:23:24Grouchland, the one you think is better, or you or the one you
- 1:23:27think did better. And you are going to tell me
- 1:23:31what number it is on this list. Whoever chooses the correct
- 1:23:36movie and gets closest, I don't expect you.
- 1:23:41You're not gonna. You're not gonna, you know, 3
- 1:23:45pointer from downtown. You're not going to you're not
- 1:23:49going to do that I don't think. But whoever gets closest and
- 1:23:53gets the correct movie will win their points back.
- 1:23:56So are we clear on what we're looking for?
- 1:23:59So we're saying, so we're saying what made more money and what
- 1:24:03number? OK, so it's a number between one
- 1:24:07and 200, right? I'll give it away.
- 1:24:09One is The Phantom Menace, Two is the 6th Sense and 200 is
- 1:24:14Limbo. I will say both of them are
- 1:24:21between One and 200. OK, neither of them did so badly
- 1:24:30that they are not on this list. OK, so you both have correctly
- 1:24:40guessed that Muppets from Space did better than the film The
- 1:24:44Adventures of Elbow and Grab Flank.
- 1:24:48And I did not ask you this because I can only ask you to
- 1:24:52just randomly guess so many numbers.
- 1:24:55But Muppets from Space grossed Anthony.
- 1:24:58You want to guess? Is is it 14,000,000?
- 1:25:01It is not 14,000,000. It did better than that.
- 1:25:05I was going to say 15-5. It is 16 million, 16,625,000,
- 1:25:12Grouchland 11,000,000. Yeah, wow.
- 1:25:19So honestly, pretty similar. Now each of you guessed that
- 1:25:26right, but the question is how well did you think it did in the
- 1:25:31in the rankings? Now, I want to be clear and I
- 1:25:34should have clarified this, and I don't think it's going to
- 1:25:37change either of your guesses. If it is, I'll let you know.
- 1:25:40I'm just literally doing closest.
- 1:25:42I don't play by closest without going over rules.
- 1:25:45Those don't make sense. I can do subtraction.
- 1:25:47I can figure out whose number is closer.
- 1:25:55Patrick, what rank did you say Muppets From Space was on this
- 1:26:00list? I said 118.
- 1:26:04OK. And Anthony, what ranking did
- 1:26:09you say? I said 83.
- 1:26:13Patrick, you bid 50 points. Anthony, you bid 89 points.
- 1:26:21Unfortunately for one of you, and unfortunately for The
- 1:26:29Muppets, Muppets From Space was not the 83rd highest grossing
- 1:26:35film of 1999. That was, of course, Arlington
- 1:26:42Rd. Oh, with Jeff Bridges and Tim
- 1:26:45Robbins. I guess I didn't see it and.
- 1:26:49It was a It was a big Lebowski Hudsucker proxy crossover.
- 1:26:52And I will say I love. That though?
- 1:26:54Sure, I wish. I will say it was also not one
- 1:26:5818118 was. Is this a return release 'cause
- 1:27:07I thought this movie did better than that.
- 1:27:09Hold on, no I guess it didn't. On 1/18 on the list is the
- 1:27:16Rugrats movie. Whoa, whoa, Becca, you are
- 1:27:20looking at calendar grosses, not in your release.
- 1:27:22Correct. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:27:23That changes it. I think I'm a lot closer then.
- 1:27:26OK, hold on. In your releases, and then you
- 1:27:32know what? No.
- 1:27:35Hold on, Hold on. Thank you.
- 1:27:40'Cause I hate that about Box Office Mojo that it defaults to
- 1:27:42calendar grosses. I hate that about it.
- 1:27:45Now this is going to change our answers in this is anybody's
- 1:27:50game now because I don't even know the answer now.
- 1:27:54Thank you. What number did you say,
- 1:27:59Anthony? I said 83, OK.
- 1:28:05Whoa, I'm. This is exciting.
- 1:28:07Even I don't know who won. You said 83 doing some math.
- 1:28:20All right, well, let's take that again.
- 1:28:24Or we we aren't going to edit this out because this is too
- 1:28:26interesting. Film 83 was the Bachelor, so not
- 1:28:31Muppets from space and film 1/18 was chill factor.
- 1:28:37No, The The Bachelor is the remake of Buster Keaton's Seven
- 1:28:40Chances starring Chris O'Donnell.
- 1:28:42Is it really? To be clear, that's what the
- 1:28:44Bachelor is. Oh my God.
- 1:28:46Oh boy. And I bet it was better than the
- 1:28:49Buster Keaton version. Yeah, I'm sure, Yeah.
- 1:28:52Yeah. Yeah, comedy legend Chris
- 1:28:54O'Donnell. Hey, hey, that's Robin to you.
- 1:28:58That is, no. But Muppets from Space was
- 1:29:03number 95 on this list. So I'm way so I'm way.
- 1:29:07Closer to that. So Anthony is way closer.
- 1:29:11Swinging it around. Anthony Anthony by correct, by
- 1:29:16telling me to use the correct list.
- 1:29:19Because you are right. Because I was sitting here and I
- 1:29:21was saying there is no way the Rugrats movie did that poorly.
- 1:29:25Right. Yeah, Yeah, it was a hit.
- 1:29:27Everyone saw it like. Yeah.
- 1:29:31So thank you, but that came out in 98 and I.
- 1:29:35Yeah, in like November, December.
- 1:29:37Yeah. And it just stuck around.
- 1:29:39Yeah. So thank you for that, for
- 1:29:42saving yourself here. Because Anthony, this is now the
- 1:29:47first actual episode of Hubba Wah you have ever won.
- 1:29:53This is my 4th appearance. This is your 4th appearance,
- 1:29:57Anthony. I don't believe anyone has
- 1:29:59appeared more times than you. That's.
- 1:30:01Probably. True.
- 1:30:02Possibly Joe Hennis? Joe, I think Joe's been on
- 1:30:04floor. I think maybe.
- 1:30:06Possibly Joe Hennis, but it's certainly one of you two and you
- 1:30:10two are truly two of my all time favorite guests.
- 1:30:14But Anthony, you have finally pulled through.
- 1:30:19That was the most thrilling way to win by pedantically being
- 1:30:22like Becca. You're looking at the wrong
- 1:30:23list. But no, this is this is the one
- 1:30:25I wanted to look at again. I didn't right.
- 1:30:28I didn't realize like I understand the difference, I
- 1:30:30just didn't realize that it defaulted to Calendar.
- 1:30:33Because it's dumb. Like it bothers me every time.
- 1:30:35That's why I. Yeah, I I again, I didn't even
- 1:30:38think. But like, no, that doesn't make
- 1:30:40any sense Anyway, Anthony, even if I take away one point from
- 1:30:47you, you absolutely still win with a score of 180 points.
- 1:30:55Anthony, you win. You know what, Anthony?
- 1:31:00You know what? So I finished writing this
- 1:31:04episode 2 hours ago, so I haven't had time to make a
- 1:31:09prize. So, Anthony.
- 1:31:11Anthony, you are, you are, you are one of my one of my close
- 1:31:16tough pigs pals. Right back at you.
- 1:31:19You name You name a Muppet and I will draw that Muppet.
- 1:31:26All right. Do I have to let you know today?
- 1:31:28Can I think about it? You can.
- 1:31:29Think about it. You can think about it, but it
- 1:31:31makes. It gives the episode a much
- 1:31:32better ending if you say what it is, though.
- 1:31:34All right, well, you know what? Let's just call it digit.
- 1:31:38OK, I will draw you a digit. Star, yeah.
- 1:31:42He's. Not in Muppets from space, no.
- 1:31:45But it kind of feels like he should be.
- 1:31:47So that's why I Yeah, yeah, I wish.
- 1:31:50He could probably, probably would have fit into the Joey
- 1:31:53Mazzarino script for Muppets from Space that apparently well,
- 1:31:57no. He also cause Kirk Thatcher's
- 1:32:00was Muppets in. Space.
- 1:32:02Joey Mazz had one that was all just sci-fi movie parodies.
- 1:32:06Because I don't know if you know this about Joey Mazzarino.
- 1:32:11He likes writing parodies. I.
- 1:32:14Did of existing films. I did know that because Digit
- 1:32:20also receives transmissions from outer space in the first
- 1:32:23episode. Sure.
- 1:32:24Anyway, that brings he's not getting any more points the
- 1:32:28game's. Done.
- 1:32:29That brings us to the end of another one.
- 1:32:32And what a what a wild, wild ride it's been.
- 1:32:37I oh boy, I can't believe that I was wrong and then right and
- 1:32:41then right and then wrong. And and knowing how Box Office
- 1:32:45Mojo works was the secret secret to everything.
- 1:32:50So because here's the thing, Patrick was closer by the
- 1:32:56calendar gross listing. So Patrick would have been right
- 1:33:00had we not change to the accurate listing.
- 1:33:04So anyway, Patrick, here's one prize I will give you.
- 1:33:08Why don't you tell us where you can be found if you wish to be
- 1:33:11found of? Course, listen, Becca, I really
- 1:33:14appreciate you being the Electoral College of this show.
- 1:33:21You can find me on. Oh.
- 1:33:24X. Patrick Kotner, PATRICKCOTNOIRI
- 1:33:29don't know if anyone's still on there, but you can definitely
- 1:33:31find me there. I'm also on Instagram at
- 1:33:33COTNOIR. You can watch the George Lucas
- 1:33:40talk show. All the episodes are online.
- 1:33:41We did an episode that's like 20 hours long where we watched all
- 1:33:45of Muppets tonight. Brian Henson was on.
- 1:33:48Bill Beretta was on. Kevin was on a bunch of writers,
- 1:33:51other performers, Leslie Paul Rudolph for all.
- 1:33:54Like so many people run, It's great, You should go watch it.
- 1:33:57We're also cited a bunch on Muppet Wiki because of that.
- 1:34:00And it makes me truly I was reading an article the other day
- 1:34:03on there and I went, wow, that's an interesting fact.
- 1:34:06And I clicked on the citation and it was for my own show and I
- 1:34:09did not remember that happening. It was 20 hours long.
- 1:34:13It was 20 hours long. It's a very long show, but it's
- 1:34:16it's worth it. It's very fun.
- 1:34:18You can, you know there's a bunch of crazy insane people on
- 1:34:21there that you can watch Seth Meyers, Weird Al Whoopi, so many
- 1:34:23Muppet adjacent people have been on and I think you will find
- 1:34:28something that you like. We're also going to be, I'll,
- 1:34:30I'll give a couple ideas. I don't know when this goes out.
- 1:34:34Do you have an idea? Probably December, probably
- 1:34:37December. OK.
- 1:34:37Well, then if if it's out before December 16th, we have a show in
- 1:34:41New York at Caveat. I will try to get this out.
- 1:34:45Before December 16th, at the first weekend of February, we'll
- 1:34:50be at San Francisco Sketchfest San Francisco trying to get a
- 1:34:53Muppet related guest. I'll say that.
- 1:34:55We'll see if it happens, I don't know.
- 1:34:58And then? Huxley, it's.
- 1:35:00Going to be Huxley? Yeah.
- 1:35:04But other shows, other live shows throughout the year, Keep
- 1:35:07an eye out. And then if you're in the Los
- 1:35:09Angeles area, you can come see ASCAT every week, every Saturday
- 1:35:12at the UCB Theater, and the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month as
- 1:35:16well. But that's it.
- 1:35:19Good stuff, Patrick and Anthony. Where can people find you if you
- 1:35:26want them to find you? I am, I am once again out and
- 1:35:30about. I've been using blue sky or blue
- 1:35:33ski as I usually pronounce it, 'cause it's one word a lot
- 1:35:37lately, and so you can follow me there at Derwood Clapper.
- 1:35:42And that's true. And I have been choosing the
- 1:35:46sensational character find of every year starting with 1924,
- 1:35:51and I'm currently up to 1953. So if you want to see what dumb
- 1:35:54character from some random thing I enjoy the most for each
- 1:35:58calendar year. Honestly, that's a terrific idea
- 1:36:02for social media. And I'm not.
- 1:36:04I don't always. I don't check my blue ski
- 1:36:06enough. I gotta.
- 1:36:07I gotta be paying more attention to your listing.
- 1:36:10Yeah, it's pretty fun. So, so I'm hopefully I'm way
- 1:36:13past 1953 by the time this goes out, but that's where I am right
- 1:36:18now. So yeah, Derwood Clapper, dot B,
- 1:36:22Sky Social or dot B Sky, dot Social.
- 1:36:25And I'm on. I'm on moving right along a
- 1:36:28podcast that might come back sometime to talk about Muppet
- 1:36:32Treasure Island. I am waiting.
- 1:36:34Waiting with bated breath. I listen.
- 1:36:36I know you guys. Your show is real bear to
- 1:36:41produce, pun intended a a country bear to produce.
- 1:36:45No, it's actually a bear with a man in his.
- 1:36:47Finger a bear with a a man in his finger to produce.
- 1:36:52But I'm I'm so excited for it to eventually return.
- 1:36:56It's it's really, it's really a special shot do.
- 1:36:59You know what happens if we don't come back?
- 1:37:04The bad guys win. The devil himself win after call
- 1:37:08a scum. That's all.
- 1:37:14And yeah, you know, Speaking of tough pigs, you can find
- 1:37:17toughpigs@toughpigs.com or tough pigs on On X or Blueski or
- 1:37:25Facebook or Instagram in theory on Tumblr.

- 1:37:32saying I'm back and updating the Tumblr, and then I got busy and
- 1:37:36didn't update the Tumblr anymore.
- 1:37:38So are. They are they on Hive?
- 1:37:42You know, technically we are on Hive.
- 1:37:44We're on Hive. Yeah.
- 1:37:45No one threads. Well, we have an Instagram, so
- 1:37:48we're on threads by default. But yeah, and you know where you
- 1:37:53can actually really help us is by donating to the Tough Pigs
- 1:37:56Patreon, where you could get even more exclusive free stuff
- 1:37:59like maybe some Boko of of Patrick asking me other
- 1:38:04questions about the year 1999. We also, of course have Tough
- 1:38:09Pigs T-shirts, including a Hubble Wash shirt.
- 1:38:12I made a monster at the end of this book shirt that I made, a
- 1:38:17Tutter St. Trumpet Company Lips T-shirt
- 1:38:20that I made, some Pride T-shirts that I made, and also shirts
- 1:38:24that people other than me made, including some Christmas shirts.
- 1:38:28Tis the season or maybe was the season.
- 1:38:31We'll see when this episode comes out.

- 1:39:19And thanks to Rainbow for driving Bunsen and Beaker to the
- 1:39:23beach. I should have also mentioned if
- 1:39:28you want to find me on social media, technically I'm on X at
- 1:39:33Uncle Petunio. But I'm gonna be real with you
- 1:39:36guys. I don't like going on X anymore.
- 1:39:43You can find me a lot more on the other social medias where I
- 1:39:46am at Tall Girl Petunia but really Tough Pigs is a great
- 1:39:51place to find me. So with all those thanks and

- 1:40:03And as always, get out. The Blair Witch Project is a
- 1:40:07good movie. You should know that.
- 1:40:11Good night everybody. Again.
- 1:40:17Ernie. Ernie.
- 1:40:18What now? Bert.
- 1:40:19Ernie, this is terrible. Elmo didn't get his blanket
- 1:40:22back. How can it end this way?
- 1:40:24It's so sad. Bert.
- 1:40:25Bert. Bert.
- 1:40:26No, Sir. Bert.
- 1:40:27Listen, don't. Don't Bert.
- 1:40:28Me. No, it's OK, Bert.
- 1:40:29The movie's not over yet. Oh, you mean good things could
- 1:40:33still happen? Of course they can, Bert.
- 1:40:35In fact, I'm sure good things will happen.
- 1:40:37Because who would want to see a movie with a sad ending?
- 1:40:41Bert. Titanic.
- 1:40:43What? Titanic had a sad ending.
- 1:40:45No Bert, roll the film. Come on, Bert.
- 1:40:47Come on. Down with the wind.
- 1:40:49No Bert. No Doctor Chavano.
- 1:40:50Quiet. Bert.
