- 0:14Speaker 1: this is those amigos.
- 0:15Speaker 2: But today is quad a full house? Is this the
- 0:21Speaker 2: first time we have two guests? First time?
- 0:24Speaker 3: First time.
- 0:26Speaker 4: We are popping your cherry.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Watt? Okay, well, we're very excited.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Because you also are part of the Microtuda family and
- 0:42Speaker 1: all of us are part of these you know, wave
- 0:45Speaker 1: of destinations where our communities can see not just themselves
- 0:49Speaker 1: but here their voices and and and have storytelling that
- 0:53Speaker 1: level that only we could provide, right, But you are
- 0:57Speaker 1: also incredible gifted actors, yes, and saw our producers and
- 1:03Speaker 1: I would say, and very smarty pants also.
- 1:08Speaker 2: That as well.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah, but also you guys have something in common that
- 1:13Speaker 1: I think the fans are probably freaking out about right now.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And I'm gonna let Freddy introduce that I know them.
- 1:19Speaker 3: We did we did some small show called Ugly Betty.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Oh that's right, that show. It's only the Star Wars of.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Yes, yes, we we we did Ugly Betty and and
- 1:33Speaker 5: and I was incredibly fortunate to be a part of
- 1:36Speaker 5: that show.
- 1:37Speaker 3: And let me just say now on the record, you
- 1:38Speaker 3: know this was their show.
- 1:40Speaker 5: You know, I was just a guest star on that show,
- 1:42Speaker 5: and they treated me so incredibly well, and we're so
- 1:46Speaker 5: welcoming to my presence and me being a cast member
- 1:49Speaker 5: on that show, and I'm forever grateful for that.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Well, you were such a huge part of that whole season.
- 1:56Speaker 4: I mean, your art was so much fun. I'm still
- 1:58Speaker 4: a little jelly that it was Hilda and Geo. But
- 2:05Speaker 4: we don't even I feel like we did.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I what was that thing?
- 2:10Speaker 4: There was like a scene like on the dance floor, right, yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 4: where it.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Was like are they going to get together? Scandal also Scar.
- 2:20Speaker 4: But the hair comes Betty swooping in.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 6: But yeah, but I thought it was such a fun
- 2:26Speaker 6: storyline and we loved have you you know, I don't
- 2:28Speaker 6: know if you guys know this, but Marky has never
- 2:31Speaker 6: watched the show what so on our podcast he's watching
- 2:34Speaker 6: it in real time.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I know that part, but I forget that.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So you never watched him in an episode today.
- 2:40Speaker 7: I watched I've seen the pilot and the finale, the
- 2:46Speaker 7: series finale prior to doing Viva Betty, and I think
- 2:52Speaker 7: that that was one of the most exciting parts about
- 2:55Speaker 7: us doing the podcast, was that, like me watching it
- 2:59Speaker 7: in time, because there's there's so much that that, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 7: things that you perhaps would want to leave in two
- 3:08Speaker 7: thousand and six or seven.
- 3:11Speaker 2: But also the point.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Is also like watching it as an adult now, Yes,
- 3:18Speaker 1: HiT's different because how old were you when.
- 3:21Speaker 2: You were in the show.
- 3:22Speaker 8: We started when I was eleven.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yes, your point not even allowed to watch television?
- 3:27Speaker 3: Is that why you didn't watch it back then? Because
- 3:29Speaker 3: you were too young?
- 3:30Speaker 2: You know?
- 3:30Speaker 8: I think that it.
- 3:33Speaker 7: I got to a point where I was really embarrassed
- 3:37Speaker 7: by it for some reason.
- 3:39Speaker 8: Why when you were that age, I think so.
- 3:42Speaker 7: I think that also, you know, like when we were
- 3:45Speaker 7: also making the show while I started entering high school
- 3:49Speaker 7: and I was going to a performing arts high school,
- 3:52Speaker 7: and a lot of the teachers at said high school were.
- 3:57Speaker 8: Very very mean to me really because I was working.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Dude, I have a very similar story about that. What
- 4:04Speaker 1: really what I want to hear yours first?
- 4:07Speaker 7: But well, I just I feel like I wasn't you know,
- 4:10Speaker 7: I wasn't at school every every single day, or I
- 4:13Speaker 7: had to leave early or something because.
- 4:15Speaker 8: I had a call time.
- 4:16Speaker 7: I had to go make the TV show.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Big Show at the time, too.
- 4:21Speaker 7: And it was I mean, this is this is also,
- 4:23Speaker 7: by the way, this is probably season three, so this
- 4:26Speaker 7: is not you know, this is when the show is
- 4:29Speaker 7: it's not just its rhythm, it's I mean it really
- 4:33Speaker 7: it's it's it's hit its stride at this point, I
- 4:35Speaker 7: think that it was probably at the precipice of like
- 4:38Speaker 7: its stride and these acting teachers.
- 4:45Speaker 8: Haters gonna have anything to do with me.
- 4:49Speaker 7: They they would also and there were also students, you
- 4:54Speaker 7: know that they would kind of pit against me. So
- 4:57Speaker 7: when we were picking, oh, we're going to do scene study,
- 5:02Speaker 7: so here's this Arthur Miller play X link up and
- 5:09Speaker 7: I would just be left alone. It's like being picked
- 5:12Speaker 7: last for Dodgeball. And then it would be like, oh, well,
- 5:16Speaker 7: there's no one for you, Mark. Here's a monologue and
- 5:20Speaker 7: I would have to then, on top of the fact
- 5:23Speaker 7: that I was also going to work on a full
- 5:27Speaker 7: time show, a full time show and be a full
- 5:30Speaker 7: time working actor, also prepare that monologue. And it was
- 5:36Speaker 7: enough was never enough. I was I was held back
- 5:41Speaker 7: in drama, the drama department for two years in a row.
- 5:46Speaker 7: I was in level one drama for two years.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I was failed.
- 5:52Speaker 1: No, but that's I've failed, They've failed me. Being on
- 5:57Speaker 1: that seventies show what they failed. This is a crazy story.
- 6:01Speaker 1: By the way, haters gonna hay girl, you know okay.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Okay, wait wait, but is that it haters gonna hate?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Is that what happened? Well, look, here's the thing.
- 6:11Speaker 1: My story was interesting because I had just learned how
- 6:14Speaker 1: to speak English, right, and when I got to this school,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know, I had to.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Really learn quick that.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Like the grades were not like school wasn't gonna say, well,
- 6:25Speaker 1: he just learned how to speak English and that's why
- 6:27Speaker 1: he's not one hundred percent. Let's give him a bee
- 6:30Speaker 1: like they would just gonna be like it is cookie cutter, right,
- 6:33Speaker 1: same thing with the tangents, right, because when you do
- 6:34Speaker 1: a sitcom, you're on for three, on for two, and
- 6:38Speaker 1: in between you have a week off, right, And during
- 6:43Speaker 1: that week off, I would go back to regular high school.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And there was nothing cool about me in school, Like
- 6:49Speaker 1: kids were like, why do you sound like that? You're
- 6:52Speaker 1: not even the cute one, Like why do you have
- 6:54Speaker 1: your hair like that?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Is that a wig?
- 6:56Speaker 1: And like nobody was like, man, you're on TV, Like no,
- 6:59Speaker 1: no one Everyone's.
- 7:00Speaker 8: Like it was exact.
- 7:02Speaker 7: And then you're in a school full of I mean,
- 7:05Speaker 7: at least in my in my experience, like like kids
- 7:09Speaker 7: that are studying to essentially what's why or what I'm doing,
- 7:15Speaker 7: you know what I mean. So so then there's also
- 7:18Speaker 7: it's not even just the teachers, it's also it's also
- 7:22Speaker 7: the kids that are just like, hey.
- 7:24Speaker 1: By the way, training ground for eventually what you're experiencing
- 7:27Speaker 1: Hollywood is the same high school cafeteria that Hollywood is
- 7:32Speaker 1: literally the quad.
- 7:34Speaker 8: And I had a great I.
- 7:35Speaker 7: Mean, I was so lucky to like have like a
- 7:38Speaker 7: at least, you know, a group of friends, some of
- 7:41Speaker 7: whom are like still some of my best friends today
- 7:44Speaker 7: because it was genuine protection but it but but at
- 7:49Speaker 7: the time, it was just I mean, it just felt
- 7:52Speaker 7: like the wild West, Like it was just it was
- 7:54Speaker 7: genuinely like, oh, like I don't know how to act.
- 7:57Speaker 8: Like it also was kind of just mind fuck.
- 7:59Speaker 7: Where it's an acting and acting teacher is telling you
- 8:03Speaker 7: that you don't know how to act, but you're also
- 8:05Speaker 7: on the number one comedy on Thursday nights at eight pm.
- 8:09Speaker 8: So I just was like, what is the truth?
- 8:12Speaker 2: What if? What if?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Like you were so good on the show, but because
- 8:16Speaker 1: you were so tired, you were blowing it on the class.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I mean we were you were just blowing it, but honestly, like,
- 8:27Speaker 1: oh my god, you're really suck in the class, but
- 8:29Speaker 1: you're so good on TV, you know.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Show or I'm like, I'm sorry, I'm just grading you here.
- 8:38Speaker 7: I just have to like learn my lines. I don't
- 8:40Speaker 7: know for the thing I'm being paid for. No, but
- 8:43Speaker 7: I you know that that that was the.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Exp What does you says that they were just hating
- 8:48Speaker 2: the teachers?
- 8:49Speaker 8: I think that I think that, you know, can I.
- 8:51Speaker 6: Just say something on about this as well? Like we've
- 8:54Speaker 6: talked about it, so I'm not I'm not talking out
- 8:56Speaker 6: of school, but like, also, he wasn't out yet. His
- 8:59Speaker 6: character was very sort of flamboyant and very.
- 9:05Speaker 4: For all for very gay.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Who you telling?
- 9:10Speaker 6: Yeah, And he wasn't out, and he wasn't like with
- 9:13Speaker 6: himself or with anybody or in you know the thing.
- 9:16Speaker 6: So I think I think at that point watching himself
- 9:20Speaker 6: and sort of I mean, we've talked about.
- 9:23Speaker 4: It is the only reason I'm speaking on it.
- 9:24Speaker 6: Yeah, because I think watching yourself in that way and
- 9:27Speaker 6: being justin and being.
- 9:28Speaker 4: So sort of like in a sailor outfit.
- 9:30Speaker 6: Tap yeah, yeah, you know when he's just like trying
- 9:33Speaker 6: to go to school and and be you.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Know, fit in. I think it was that was a
- 9:39Speaker 4: little bit hard.
- 9:41Speaker 1: That's so interesting. I can relate to that. I mean,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I didn't know that we were going to relate so
- 9:46Speaker 1: hardcore on that because when I was on the show,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I was so ambiguous, and that was the design and
- 9:51Speaker 1: the beauty where that I thought the show the character
- 9:54Speaker 1: had was that absolutely who.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Cares if if he is if it isn't.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I mean the idea is that he was living a
- 10:01Speaker 1: life that was so innocent and was so full of freedom.
- 10:05Speaker 9: Yes, right, yeah, and there was and there was so
- 10:09Speaker 9: much that I think that also at the ages that
- 10:12Speaker 9: we were, respectively, I don't really necessarily think that I
- 10:18Speaker 9: even had kind of the intellectual capacity to understand what
- 10:25Speaker 9: the cultural relevance do.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You're entering your teens and you're just trying to figure out, Oh,
- 10:30Speaker 1: your teens is like the pre phase before you're an adult,
- 10:35Speaker 1: and at that point you're trying to figure out so much.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Until you're that eighteen nineteen twenty year old, it's really
- 10:41Speaker 1: fascinating how grounded you are and how talented you were
- 10:45Speaker 1: at that younger age, but how free you were to
- 10:47Speaker 1: perform on the way that you also will allow yourself to.
- 10:50Speaker 7: I mean, I also think that there's something to be
- 10:53Speaker 7: said about and I think that we all can relate
- 10:57Speaker 7: to this sentiment, is when you're surrounded by because we
- 11:02Speaker 7: we work in a very kind of abnormal environment, right,
- 11:08Speaker 7: I mean, just just as like considering you know what
- 11:13Speaker 7: other people are used to, right, sure, we work in
- 11:17Speaker 7: a very abnormal environment. And I think that feeling abnormal
- 11:22Speaker 7: as a person, whilst simultaneously being an in an abnormal environment,
- 11:29Speaker 7: at least having normal, grounded, supportive people in a community
- 11:35Speaker 7: around me, that that is the only reason why I
- 11:39Speaker 7: feel so so grounded. And I feel like Anna can
- 11:43Speaker 7: very well speak to that because she was at the
- 11:45Speaker 7: forefront of just grounding me, just just in my in
- 11:52Speaker 7: my personhood, you know, of of of the the young
- 11:58Speaker 7: adult that I was becoming and then the man that
- 12:01Speaker 7: I subsequently became, I feel like is completely attributed to
- 12:09Speaker 7: honest support, which is.
- 12:12Speaker 2: A perfect segue to ask Anna, where did you start acting?
- 12:18Speaker 2: I had that question, got question so much all of us.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I've had to answer that a bazillion times. But I know, Freddie,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I know you have so many questions for Anna.
- 12:28Speaker 8: Questions that I know the answers to already.
- 12:31Speaker 2: No, Anna, So so.
- 12:33Speaker 3: You're from New York right, born and raised?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Where in New York I was?
- 12:37Speaker 6: I lived in Washington Heights for tell us about like fifteen,
- 12:41Speaker 6: and then we moved to the Upper West Side for
- 12:44Speaker 6: the rest of mine.
- 12:45Speaker 3: In your in your your father's from where.
- 12:47Speaker 6: My father was born in Puerto Rico, but he grew
- 12:49Speaker 6: up on the Lower East Side of New York. My
- 12:52Speaker 6: mom was born in Wisconsin and then came to New
- 12:54Speaker 6: York when she was twenty two to go to NYU.
- 12:58Speaker 4: That's where they met.
- 13:00Speaker 6: Was Irish, though Irish Catholic, very much that, very much that.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Were you also?
- 13:07Speaker 5: Were you also, like Mark, were you acting in high
- 13:09Speaker 5: school or where did it all start for you?
- 13:11Speaker 4: I was.
- 13:12Speaker 6: I started as a ballet dancer and then I was
- 13:15Speaker 6: on point for a while when you first started six
- 13:21Speaker 6: and then I went to ABT and I was on
- 13:23Speaker 6: point and like it was just awful, Like my toes
- 13:26Speaker 6: were bleeding and I was like, this is not for me.
- 13:31Speaker 4: It was just it wasn't.
- 13:32Speaker 6: I feel like to be a ballet dancer, you really
- 13:34Speaker 6: have to want it because it's such a hard life,
- 13:37Speaker 6: and it just I just didn't.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Want it that much.
- 13:39Speaker 6: And I liked performing and I liked singing, so that
- 13:42Speaker 6: I went to I auditioned for LaGuardia and I got
- 13:46Speaker 6: in for a voice and then I started stuttying. You know,
- 13:49Speaker 6: it was it wasn't what I wanted to do either,
- 13:51Speaker 6: because I was studying like opera and chamber music and music.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Theory and that wasn't a fit for me.
- 13:57Speaker 6: And then I took a year off after high school
- 14:00Speaker 6: and worked and because.
- 14:03Speaker 4: My mother was like, oh you want to be grown,
- 14:04Speaker 4: You're going to be grown, so like you're paying rent, Like.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Don't think you work every week?
- 14:10Speaker 6: I waitressed in every bar restaurant in the city. And
- 14:14Speaker 6: then I was like, oh, college looks good. But I
- 14:16Speaker 6: went to a conservatory program for a theater in Philadelphia,
- 14:20Speaker 6: which is where my dad was, and then I that
- 14:23Speaker 6: was just it.
- 14:24Speaker 4: There was never really a plan B for me. That
- 14:27Speaker 4: was it better or worse?
- 14:29Speaker 3: Is that because you were in Labyrinth?
- 14:30Speaker 6: Thought so right lab right after I got out of college,
- 14:34Speaker 6: not right after I went. I toured with the musical
- 14:37Speaker 6: Hair in Europe for a while.
- 14:40Speaker 3: What was that was that?
- 14:46Speaker 2: I just.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I modeled for guc in Italy for like
- 14:51Speaker 1: sums you show.
- 14:55Speaker 8: Yeah, he has so many cool stories about it. Please
- 14:57Speaker 8: tell me it was.
- 14:59Speaker 6: It was one of the It was one of those
- 15:01Speaker 6: backstage do you guys remember backstage there was a paper
- 15:04Speaker 6: in New York that had like cattle called auditions, and
- 15:07Speaker 6: there was one for this musical called Hair, which is
- 15:10Speaker 6: like a hippie rock musical. And I loved it and
- 15:14Speaker 6: I auditioned.
- 15:14Speaker 4: It was like two hundred people.
- 15:16Speaker 6: Auditioning and I actually booked it and we toured Europe
- 15:20Speaker 6: for about seven months and we.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Just seven months.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Yeah, it was amazing and it was it was great.
- 15:28Speaker 2: So much mayonnaise, so much, so.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Much everywhere, and it was but it was a lot
- 15:38Speaker 6: of for there was like there was one time though,
- 15:41Speaker 6: because it was a hippie musical.
- 15:42Speaker 4: And we were young whatever, and.
- 15:46Speaker 6: They would like throw you know. It was also Europe,
- 15:48Speaker 6: so everything's legal there pretty much, and they would just
- 15:51Speaker 6: like throw you know, joints and mushrooms and everything on
- 15:55Speaker 6: stage and we would just have it. Like but one time,
- 15:59Speaker 6: as we were going on stage for the second act, the.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Guy who played Burger.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Uh.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Listen, gave us a little like a little half tap
- 16:16Speaker 6: of like acid, And we ended up doing the.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Second complete and that's the one that got the Tony.
- 16:26Speaker 6: But in fairness, the whole second act of the show,
- 16:29Speaker 6: everybody is supposed to be tripping, So it was like
- 16:32Speaker 6: method act.
- 16:33Speaker 2: It was that day.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Tell me about Labyrinth and how you got in and
- 16:40Speaker 5: and and I'm so just fascinated by that.
- 16:43Speaker 3: That theater company. I think that theater company is so
- 16:45Speaker 3: freaking cool.
- 16:46Speaker 5: And you and Philip Hoffmann and John Ortiz, I mean,
- 16:50Speaker 5: and the list was on is yeah, please tell me
- 16:53Speaker 5: about that how you got in.
- 16:54Speaker 4: One of those things.
- 16:55Speaker 6: My girlfriend was running a theater and in Chelsea, and
- 16:59Speaker 6: John Ortiz came in looking for a space for lab
- 17:02Speaker 6: and it was just this little black box theater and
- 17:06Speaker 6: so he was like, we need a place to put
- 17:09Speaker 6: on our shows. And because at that time on Broadway
- 17:13Speaker 6: there was a show and the show was was a
- 17:16Speaker 6: Latin show, The Cat. I'm so mad that I can't
- 17:20Speaker 6: remember the name of the show, but the two lead
- 17:22Speaker 6: actors characters are Latino and they cast f Murray Abraham
- 17:28Speaker 6: and like Sigourney Weaver or something. And I think John
- 17:34Speaker 6: Er was like, fuck this, We're writing our own stuff.
- 17:37Speaker 6: We're gonna put on our own plays, and that's how
- 17:39Speaker 6: Labyrinth was born. So my girlfriend, who was running the theater,
- 17:44Speaker 6: called me and she's like, yo, I just met these
- 17:46Speaker 6: amazing guys.
- 17:47Speaker 4: His name is Don Erties.
- 17:48Speaker 6: They're they're having there, they have a play that they're
- 17:51Speaker 6: going to put on, and and do you know this
- 17:53Speaker 6: guy this.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Is before Philip was really huge. He's just sort of
- 17:58Speaker 4: I think maybe he had done cent of a One
- 18:00Speaker 4: Man maybe, yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 8: Like right at the beginning.
- 18:03Speaker 6: Yeah, And and she was and you know this Phillips
- 18:07Speaker 6: super half many. He's going to be directing it. And
- 18:09Speaker 6: this guy called Stephen wrote it. There's only a few pages,
- 18:12Speaker 6: but they're having auditions. You have to come on audition
- 18:14Speaker 6: for it. And I was like, all right, let's do it.
- 18:18Speaker 6: So I auditioned and I fucking killed it and I
- 18:22Speaker 6: got the party and the rest, and yeah, it was
- 18:26Speaker 6: but it was a part that you know when you
- 18:27Speaker 6: get something and you're.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Like, it just flows.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Just turn it on, turn it on, just turn it on,
- 18:33Speaker 1: turn on the turn it on, turn it on. No
- 18:38Speaker 1: get no makeup, get off men, Yes.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Yes, exactly that.
- 18:44Speaker 6: And I think, you know, I just was like and
- 18:47Speaker 6: I was reading with David's as so I love him, Yeah,
- 18:52Speaker 6: I love him, and so it was it was just fate.
- 18:55Speaker 6: And then we did the play. The play became really
- 18:58Speaker 6: you know, I mean it was a black box show,
- 19:00Speaker 6: but like the times came and like you know, in Arabia,
- 19:05Speaker 6: we'd all be kings and it was just an amazing,
- 19:08Speaker 6: amazing show. Liza was in it, David was Liza Coloons,
- 19:11Speaker 6: David Zayas, and it was just it was just one
- 19:15Speaker 6: of those like magical moments. And then they they asked
- 19:18Speaker 6: me to be a part of the company, and yeah,
- 19:20Speaker 6: it was just it's still it's still like one of
- 19:22Speaker 6: the grounding places for me.
- 19:24Speaker 1: When when did you decide, Okay, theaters grade and you're
- 19:28Speaker 1: like TV or film.
- 19:31Speaker 6: I was doing in Arabia this play, and I guess
- 19:34Speaker 6: a casting director from ABC or I don't know whatever
- 19:38Speaker 6: it was, but I somehow got an audition for NYPD Blue.
- 19:42Speaker 2: I was just about to ask.
- 19:45Speaker 6: And so they they they called me in and I
- 19:47Speaker 6: and I got it.
- 19:48Speaker 4: But it was just one scene. And I had never
- 19:52Speaker 4: done any TV ever in my life.
- 19:55Speaker 6: And I remember standing there and I'm like going over
- 19:58Speaker 6: my lines and Dennis from comes over to me and
- 20:01Speaker 6: he was like, don't bother, and I was like what
- 20:04Speaker 6: He's like, don't don't bother, Like David is gonna David
- 20:07Speaker 6: Miltch is gonna come on and he's gonna change everything.
- 20:10Speaker 6: And I broke out into a cold sweat and I
- 20:13Speaker 6: was just like, no, you know, theater just like lines say,
- 20:17Speaker 6: our lines do, our lines act react.
- 20:19Speaker 4: In the scene, David Milch comes on lo and behold.
- 20:22Speaker 4: He's like, this is ship and he throws away.
- 20:24Speaker 6: He's like, all right, all right, everybody come here, and
- 20:26Speaker 6: he has us standing there and he goes, okay, this
- 20:29Speaker 6: I was gonna go. And then he's just starts saying
- 20:31Speaker 6: things and pointing to us, and I guess, you know,
- 20:34Speaker 6: He's like.
- 20:35Speaker 4: So you say this, then okay, got it good? And
- 20:41Speaker 4: I was just like, I don't okay. I think. I
- 20:48Speaker 4: was like I think I know what he said. Whatever.
- 20:50Speaker 6: And then we get and we do the scene and
- 20:54Speaker 6: and he looks at me and he goes, that's not
- 20:56Speaker 6: what I told you to say, and I was like,
- 20:58Speaker 6: and he goes, yours was better, keep saying that that
- 21:01Speaker 6: was better.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I was like, my heart, I literally I never heard
- 21:07Speaker 1: this before.
- 21:09Speaker 6: I have.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I had heard that. I really just felt.
- 21:18Speaker 6: That, Yeah, it was like that was better, So so
- 21:21Speaker 6: just keep doing that and I did, and then he
- 21:23Speaker 6: was like, can you can you come to LA because
- 21:26Speaker 6: I'm going to write you another scene?
- 21:28Speaker 4: Can you come to LA? And I was like.
- 21:31Speaker 6: Yes, and so I did, and so it was it
- 21:34Speaker 6: was just sort of like that's then I was in
- 21:36Speaker 6: l A and I was like, Oh, this is amazing.
- 21:41Speaker 6: I like it here, this is great, and so you know,
- 21:45Speaker 6: I just decided to stay there for a little while
- 21:47Speaker 6: and I kept coming back and forth.
- 21:49Speaker 4: But yeah, that was sort of like the entrance into.
- 21:52Speaker 1: It's also really fun to kind of hear stories that
- 21:55Speaker 1: validate the fact that that good work can get more work, right,
- 22:00Speaker 1: because a lot of times the frustration of like what
- 22:03Speaker 1: with the perception of like what we all feel we
- 22:05Speaker 1: deserve or what we should be doing next, or like
- 22:08Speaker 1: looking to a head and losing focus on the stuff
- 22:12Speaker 1: that's in front of you, the idea that what you
- 22:16Speaker 1: are holding in this moment actually is the plane ticket
- 22:21Speaker 1: to your next destination, right, And I think a lot
- 22:24Speaker 1: of young actors get really hung up and like I
- 22:26Speaker 1: need to be doing this next, without actually paying attention
- 22:30Speaker 1: to what they have in front of them.
- 22:31Speaker 8: Right.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Somebody gave me an advice when I was really young.
- 22:35Speaker 1: He said, what's the hurry? And I said, I was like, oh, well,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you know, like I feel like i'm and this is
- 22:42Speaker 1: me like young, you know, mid twenties early trainings woman,
- 22:45Speaker 1: because I feel like I'm hot right now and I
- 22:46Speaker 1: feel like I'm getting stuff and people are inviting me
- 22:48Speaker 1: to do things and getting off forres feel like I
- 22:50Speaker 1: have to get those because at some point, like it's
- 22:52Speaker 1: kind of right now. And he's like, but what's the hurry?
- 22:55Speaker 1: And I was like, I didn't understand what he was
- 22:56Speaker 1: trying to. I was like, you don't know, I'm trying.
- 22:59Speaker 1: And then I looked across from and it was the
- 23:01Speaker 1: guy who was mentoring and this was Johnny Depp. And
- 23:05Speaker 1: I was like, okay, now now I get it. Now
- 23:08Speaker 1: I get what you've made it. And he's like, everybody
- 23:11Speaker 1: wanted me to play the pretty cup, nobody wanted to
- 23:13Speaker 1: give me scissor hands. Somebody want to give me and
- 23:16Speaker 1: and it's like, so you you just kind of played
- 23:18Speaker 1: your own hand, right and and take your time, you know,
- 23:22Speaker 1: And he said, just like focus on doing what you
- 23:26Speaker 1: have in front of you.
- 23:27Speaker 2: So good.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Agreed that it takes you to your next thing, you know,
- 23:33Speaker 1: because there's no great performances that die there.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Great performances go somewhere else.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And I'm not talking about like timeless graveness, you know
- 23:43Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, Just like if you had the
- 23:46Speaker 1: one scene in NYP the Blue right and the other
- 23:49Speaker 1: casting director or the network, which we all know how
- 23:52Speaker 1: the networks were work, Right, there's a casting director, they
- 23:55Speaker 1: see you in that one show, and then they have
- 23:57Speaker 1: you on the show that's on Wednesday, and then they'll
- 23:59Speaker 1: have you the show is on Tuesday, you know, and like,
- 24:01Speaker 1: so it's a really interesting thing.
- 24:03Speaker 2: But the what's the hurry? Like, enjoy what you have
- 24:08Speaker 2: right now?
- 24:08Speaker 5: Right?
- 24:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 1: So I had another trainer who said to me, like
- 24:11Speaker 1: I would do my reps and I get to fifteen
- 24:14Speaker 1: right away, you know, and he's like, hey, enjoy every rep, right,
- 24:19Speaker 1: I enjoy every rep.
- 24:21Speaker 2: This sucks, you know, yeah, I'm suffer in English.
- 24:24Speaker 1: But if you enjoy every rep and every rep actually counts,
- 24:28Speaker 1: if you're just getting through it, then like it doesn't
- 24:31Speaker 1: do what it's supposed to do for you. But I
- 24:34Speaker 1: think what you're saying is so interesting to say, like, man,
- 24:38Speaker 1: you were enjoying every ticket you got And.
- 24:41Speaker 6: It's so good to hear you say that, because I
- 24:43Speaker 6: think even all of us sitting here, even though we're
- 24:46Speaker 6: so well seasoned in it and all that, I tend
- 24:48Speaker 6: I forget that all the time, Like I don't think
- 24:50Speaker 6: I've thought of that story in years. That's you know,
- 24:54Speaker 6: but you're You're so right. It was exactly that. It
- 24:58Speaker 6: was exactly just like enjoying that scene and being in
- 25:02Speaker 6: that moment and letting those letting all.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Of that that anxiety just sort.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Of like, yeah, it did float through you and then yeah,
- 25:12Speaker 1: and for people to see.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Your talent through just that one scene.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Right, I'm a strong believer in like, you know, there's
- 25:19Speaker 5: sometimes you know, I've come across actors who are like, well,
- 25:22Speaker 5: this is just a whatever, right, this is some indie film,
- 25:25Speaker 5: This is just some like episode.
- 25:27Speaker 3: This is just some like crappy tea.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I'm on this thing, you know, yeah, yeah, you know
- 25:31Speaker 2: what I mean.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I have a couple of friends who are like, I
- 25:34Speaker 1: just send a tape for this thing, We'll see what happens.
- 25:36Speaker 1: And I'm like, already I know where that tape looks.
- 25:38Speaker 8: Like that tape, the tape doesn't look good.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Just what I'm saying I gets what I'm saying. He goes,
- 25:44Speaker 1: you know, I said something, I'm not getting it. That's
- 25:48Speaker 1: what you just said to me, right. But it also
- 25:51Speaker 1: comes because it's like, yeah, I don't want that one,
- 25:54Speaker 1: you know.
- 25:54Speaker 2: It's just it's a weird energy.
- 25:56Speaker 5: I can't tell you how many projects I've done where
- 25:59Speaker 5: the director or whoever it is, was like, hey man,
- 26:02Speaker 5: I just saw I just saw you in something at
- 26:04Speaker 5: like three in the morning, and they'll like name the project, right.
- 26:08Speaker 2: So I always think of that whenever I go into
- 26:10Speaker 2: a project.
- 26:10Speaker 5: I'm like, even though it's whatever, right, or whatever your
- 26:14Speaker 5: perception of how low it is or whatever, like, I
- 26:18Speaker 5: just try to kill it every time because you never
- 26:20Speaker 5: know who that dude is going to be watching at
- 26:22Speaker 5: three in the morning and how that job is going
- 26:25Speaker 5: to come from that thing that they were watching at
- 26:27Speaker 5: three in the morning.
- 26:28Speaker 7: I also think that there's something to be said too
- 26:30Speaker 7: about when you like and this is not something that
- 26:35Speaker 7: you did going to a conservatory and studying acting on
- 26:40Speaker 7: the like in the collegiate level. But like, I really
- 26:44Speaker 7: do feel that there is this sense of.
- 26:51Speaker 8: Like I deserve this because.
- 26:54Speaker 7: I went to school about it, and that's just not
- 26:59Speaker 7: the way that so this works.
- 27:03Speaker 1: And I think the way you said that is so
- 27:05Speaker 1: I've heard it so many times.
- 27:07Speaker 7: It's just you know, like and and and it's been
- 27:09Speaker 7: said in a million different ways, and I just and
- 27:12Speaker 7: I feel like I feel very grateful to have learned
- 27:17Speaker 7: that lesson before, Like like before, I I don't know
- 27:22Speaker 7: felt that way because when I was at n y U,
- 27:25Speaker 7: I mean I did not study acting, but but a
- 27:29Speaker 7: lot of those Tish kids were really walking around like
- 27:35Speaker 7: with their noses held very high in the air that
- 27:39Speaker 7: you know, they because they just learned who Stanislavsky was
- 27:44Speaker 7: and they were gonna be really big stars.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Why do you think, why do you think there is
- 27:49Speaker 1: that I'm gonna call it innocent and not the humble innocent,
- 27:54Speaker 1: but I'm gonna call this the bliss of innocence to
- 27:57Speaker 1: think you are gonna do it?
- 28:00Speaker 2: What do you think is a miss an ingredient when
- 28:02Speaker 2: why they don't they don't go there?
- 28:04Speaker 7: Well, I think that it's just it's it's it's steeped
- 28:07Speaker 7: in naivete. I mean, I think that that you do
- 28:10Speaker 7: not understand an industry that you've never worked in before,
- 28:15Speaker 7: and especially when you have people telling you that your
- 28:18Speaker 7: talent alone will propel you into success.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:25Speaker 8: And also we measure success very differently, right.
- 28:28Speaker 7: I think that that if you don't have maybe perhaps
- 28:32Speaker 7: commercial success, but you feel successful in your own ability,
- 28:37Speaker 7: that's success. I'm not I'm not talking about success in
- 28:42Speaker 7: that capacity, but I think that I I studied this,
- 28:46Speaker 7: therefore I am going.
- 28:48Speaker 8: To be a star. That it just it just doesn't work.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Like I think.
- 28:53Speaker 6: Also, something that you have to have is just your
- 28:58Speaker 6: ability to get the fuck back up mm hmm, because
- 29:01Speaker 6: I think you get kicked so many times.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Wish that the school so the Curses of the Cologist
- 29:07Speaker 1: taught you how to get up, because that's to me,
- 29:10Speaker 1: that's what they don't do.
- 29:12Speaker 7: That's the one thing that's missing.
- 29:15Speaker 2: To fail is that do you think? Well?
- 29:17Speaker 6: I think I mean, like I said, there wasn't really
- 29:19Speaker 6: a plan B and maybe that's that.
- 29:23Speaker 4: So that like created a certain grit of like.
- 29:26Speaker 1: How do you pivot failure? How do you pivot failure?
- 29:30Speaker 1: Like how do you how do you reframe failure as sure?
- 29:34Speaker 2: A lesson?
- 29:35Speaker 1: Sure like the fuel you need for the next one,
- 29:38Speaker 1: Like how do you flip it?
- 29:39Speaker 2: How do you like.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Brainwash yourself into saying it's not for me, for not
- 29:44Speaker 1: for no personal reasons, right.
- 29:46Speaker 4: But there is somebody who should teach you that.
- 29:49Speaker 7: But I mean, if you don't know it, then it
- 29:51Speaker 7: hardens you and it and it makes you jaded in a.
- 29:55Speaker 8: Way that that is.
- 29:59Speaker 7: Extre really impactful on your ability to actually perform and
- 30:04Speaker 7: your ability to actually be an artist.
- 30:06Speaker 8: I mean I can't.
- 30:08Speaker 7: I mean sometimes I feel extremely jaded by by things
- 30:13Speaker 7: and on and I talk about this all the time
- 30:16Speaker 7: about just those those feelings that you really have to
- 30:21Speaker 7: to battle with. But we have the I mean, and
- 30:24Speaker 7: all of us sitting here have the the experience and
- 30:29Speaker 7: the ability to actually, you know, battle those those feelings
- 30:34Speaker 7: and actually come out on the other side because we've
- 30:36Speaker 7: actually seen some semblance of success, the fruits of our labor.
- 30:42Speaker 4: But even before that, I mean.
- 30:43Speaker 6: Even before having success, I was still able to sort
- 30:46Speaker 6: of lick my wounds and get back up and go
- 30:50Speaker 6: forward again because I that's what I wanted, right.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I guess that's the missing ingredient and the recipe that
- 30:56Speaker 1: I was asking earlier, which was, you know, what is
- 30:58Speaker 1: the missing or the commany nominator between those who actually
- 31:02Speaker 1: prevailed to do whether been training in college to do
- 31:06Speaker 1: versus the ones that like decide, oh man, this is
- 31:09Speaker 1: too hard, or like I really need to be realistic.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:13Speaker 1: It's like there's like levels to this, Like your family
- 31:17Speaker 1: could convince you that this is not for you. Your
- 31:19Speaker 1: best friends can tell you you're like okay when you're
- 31:22Speaker 1: really being great, and like so there's like levels of
- 31:26Speaker 1: diffracturing your attempt.
- 31:28Speaker 8: Right, Well, believing in yourself.
- 31:30Speaker 2: And well, believe in yourself is that I agree to.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I don't disagree at all.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I think believing in yourself is a I mean, it's
- 31:38Speaker 1: like it's hard, but believing in yourself is one ingredient
- 31:43Speaker 1: of a number of skills.
- 31:45Speaker 2: That you have to learn in order to hold it right.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Because I can believe I can believe that I'm the
- 31:51Speaker 1: next change bond, right, I believe in myself way, I
- 31:54Speaker 1: believe myself that I can be that.
- 31:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And but when you come full circle, there's a couple
- 32:00Speaker 1: of things that have to embody right, Like do I
- 32:03Speaker 1: know how to shoot a gun? Do I can't be intimidating?
- 32:06Speaker 1: Give me like a tsunami of things that have to happen.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Do I use sex appeal?
- 32:11Speaker 4: Yes you do. That's a big affirmative.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Yes, it's my camera. But but I think that British British?
- 32:26Speaker 2: Can I be British? The answer is yes, I just
- 32:28Speaker 2: can't do this anyone good.
- 32:31Speaker 1: But you I guess, I guess the most important part is, like,
- 32:35Speaker 1: you know, how do you push yourself with the audacity
- 32:37Speaker 1: of believing right, and then also add it up to
- 32:40Speaker 1: the skills that you need.
- 32:42Speaker 2: And now it's like we drive ourselves to like.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Present day and in the spaces that we hold as artists,
- 32:48Speaker 1: and it's an artist. I wanted to point out first
- 32:50Speaker 1: all congratulations and hacks, Oh thank you. Yeah, there's a
- 32:53Speaker 1: lot of people in this company that was very excited
- 32:56Speaker 1: that you know, we're going to talk to you about that.
- 33:03Speaker 1: So uh, I wanted to bring it up because Access
- 33:07Speaker 1: is one of those shows a very few times in
- 33:10Speaker 1: a generation come and they hit a chord and pop
- 33:14Speaker 1: culturally alters, and then when they show up to the
- 33:17Speaker 1: award shows. When that show shows up to the award shows,
- 33:20Speaker 1: everyone's like, oh, that's right, I have to discover this,
- 33:23Speaker 1: I have to watch this. So every time you pop
- 33:25Speaker 1: up somewhere in the level of like pop culture success.
- 33:28Speaker 2: It gathers more like aura, you know, and how how
- 33:33Speaker 2: how he's been in two of them.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Yeah, that's crazy, is that, dude?
- 33:38Speaker 2: I mean, you hit lightning twice? Yeah, yikes. I hope
- 33:41Speaker 2: I hope that there's the third one. Are you still
- 33:44Speaker 2: doing it? What do you?
- 33:45Speaker 7: Uh well, no, we're we're we're completely wrapped. I mean,
- 33:49Speaker 7: I I think that in uh, this week and then
- 33:52Speaker 7: the next week, two weeks from now from when we're
- 33:56Speaker 7: sitting here, will be the series finale.
- 34:00Speaker 8: This shows over.
- 34:02Speaker 2: How was the experience? It was?
- 34:05Speaker 8: It brought me, it brought me back. I mean I couldn't,
- 34:08Speaker 8: you know.
- 34:10Speaker 7: As we say in the industry, I couldn't get fucking arrested,
- 34:16Speaker 7: gotcha to I mean because I had gone to college
- 34:20Speaker 7: and I was, you know, having fun in my twenties
- 34:25Speaker 7: and then realized that I didn't have any money left
- 34:28Speaker 7: and drugs and alcohol are really interesting things that.
- 34:35Speaker 8: Bleed your bank account.
- 34:37Speaker 7: And then I like moved back to Los Angeles and
- 34:41Speaker 7: moved in with my parents, and I was just just auditioning.
- 34:45Speaker 8: I was just trying to make something happen.
- 34:47Speaker 7: Anything it was it was not you know, there was
- 34:51Speaker 7: no turning down any audition. And then just kind of
- 34:57Speaker 7: out of the blue, in October of twenty twenty, so
- 35:01Speaker 7: we're in the thick of COVID, not a vaccine in
- 35:06Speaker 7: sight at that point.
- 35:09Speaker 8: Got just a.
- 35:12Speaker 7: Like Paul uh Downs and Luccianiello and Jen Statsky want
- 35:17Speaker 7: to do a Zoom call with you for for this,
- 35:21Speaker 7: you know, And my agent was like, it's a very
- 35:23Speaker 7: small role. It's a very small role. And I'm like, yes, yes,
- 35:32Speaker 7: the answer is yes.
- 35:33Speaker 4: And had you had you just then with love though
- 35:37Speaker 4: or with no?
- 35:38Speaker 7: This was this was before, this was before And so
- 35:44Speaker 7: I went on to a Zoom call with them, and
- 35:46Speaker 7: I did the audition, and you know, a zoom audition.
- 35:51Speaker 2: So thankless. Sometimes it's just comedy.
- 35:54Speaker 8: It's weird, and it's like trying.
- 35:55Speaker 1: To be and by the way, you're talking about Zoom
- 35:58Speaker 1: when it was it wasn't like.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Now it's like HDS exactly. It wasn't zoom, like we
- 36:04Speaker 2: know zoom exactly. Yeah, like wreshing itself.
- 36:10Speaker 6: Yeah, And you're trying to do comedy, which is all
- 36:13Speaker 6: about time.
- 36:14Speaker 2: It's like the reporter on on the field. It's like
- 36:17Speaker 2: it's okay.
- 36:18Speaker 7: But I mean it was just and and of course
- 36:20Speaker 7: you know, I I don't know about you guys, but
- 36:23Speaker 7: I always whether.
- 36:25Speaker 8: It's in person on zoom whatever.
- 36:27Speaker 7: I leave an audition every time for a meeting and
- 36:30Speaker 7: being like, fucking blew it.
- 36:34Speaker 2: That was terrible.
- 36:36Speaker 8: That was terrible. I should quit.
- 36:38Speaker 1: So many people watching this right now listening to this,
- 36:40Speaker 1: we're not going.
- 36:41Speaker 8: Like that's on me like that, No, no, I blew it.
- 36:44Speaker 7: And then uh, then a week later I was on
- 36:48Speaker 7: set making making hacks and we didn't know what it was.
- 36:51Speaker 8: I thought it was really cool.
- 36:53Speaker 7: And then it just kind of, I mean, it was
- 36:56Speaker 7: kind of similar to what I now recall of like
- 37:00Speaker 7: what the Ugly Betty effect was as well. I don't
- 37:03Speaker 7: think that, you know, I was too young to kind
- 37:05Speaker 7: of understand like what what like the word like even
- 37:09Speaker 7: the word like juggernaut really meant at all, but I
- 37:13Speaker 7: feel like it was a very similar.
- 37:17Speaker 8: Experience.
- 37:18Speaker 7: And and I mean, and then we just had a
- 37:22Speaker 7: great time. It's the litteral It's it's the only other
- 37:26Speaker 7: time since Ugly Betty that I've felt that close safe and.
- 37:33Speaker 2: You felt that freedom to just like swing.
- 37:36Speaker 7: I I just I felt I felt the freedom to
- 37:39Speaker 7: swing big and and if it missed, that's okay, because
- 37:45Speaker 7: I missed, and that's fine.
- 37:47Speaker 1: But that's also being seasoned right, that's like being in
- 37:51Speaker 1: your strength and being like, that's what take one, Take.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Two, right, three four?
- 37:55Speaker 7: I I swung the I mean, and also you know,
- 37:57Speaker 7: but but the difference I think with hacks that that
- 38:00Speaker 7: which is something that I'm i think the most grateful
- 38:02Speaker 7: to have learned, was a lot of these people come
- 38:06Speaker 7: from like an improvisational background, like from the Second City
- 38:12Speaker 7: UCD worlds, which are absolutely like completely out of my
- 38:19Speaker 7: realm of comfortability, right, I mean on Ugly Betty, you know,
- 38:22Speaker 7: you swing big, but it's like you swing big on
- 38:25Speaker 7: the ways in which you say the line. It's not
- 38:28Speaker 7: it's not oh, just throw something in here or something.
- 38:34Speaker 2: I was like, do something else with it.
- 38:36Speaker 7: And it's like that was just never my experience, and
- 38:39Speaker 7: so it took me a couple of seasons actually to
- 38:43Speaker 7: like really be comfortable with that.
- 38:44Speaker 8: But I feel so grateful to have learned.
- 38:46Speaker 7: That's amazing of like, wow, I feel like I know
- 38:50Speaker 7: how to like improvise.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Do you feel like this role in this show has
- 38:55Speaker 1: reintroduced you to a whole different level of not just
- 38:59Speaker 1: mature care characters, but also like what's next for you?
- 39:02Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 39:02Speaker 7: Do you feel like you definitely did? I think so
- 39:05Speaker 7: I mean I think that it. I think that it
- 39:07Speaker 7: reintroduced me to you know, like I guess on like
- 39:13Speaker 7: I don't know a base level like you know, the
- 39:17Speaker 7: industry or like whatever of like, but but I think
- 39:20Speaker 7: that as an actor as an artist, I feel much
- 39:25Speaker 7: more fully formed as as an artist, and I feel
- 39:29Speaker 7: really invigorated and very curious, you know what I mean,
- 39:33Speaker 7: in a way that I just have never I don't
- 39:36Speaker 7: think ever felt before like as an artist, you know.
- 39:40Speaker 7: And and also I think that leaving Hacks, I'm now
- 39:44Speaker 7: calling myself an artist, and I think that that was
- 39:47Speaker 7: something that I was never able to ever say.
- 39:51Speaker 2: So who go ahead?
- 39:52Speaker 5: Not? And I felt like you you took a big
- 39:55Speaker 5: swing too, like when we did Ugly Boddy, you know, like,
- 39:58Speaker 5: especially now that I've known you.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Twenty years, Oh dare you?
- 40:01Speaker 5: Oh man, she's she's she really created a character like
- 40:05Speaker 5: even like the clothes that you wore and every it's
- 40:08Speaker 5: so opposite of like who you are in real life,
- 40:11Speaker 5: Like like how did you how did you put that
- 40:13Speaker 5: character together? Was that all your idea to do that?
- 40:16Speaker 3: Or and even and even sort of your personality.
- 40:19Speaker 5: On that show I felt was really unique and really
- 40:22Speaker 5: it felt really three dimensional.
- 40:23Speaker 3: I mean all the stuff you do that I've seen
- 40:25Speaker 3: you do, I feel that way.
- 40:26Speaker 5: But yeah, but I felt like like what he was
- 40:29Speaker 5: just saying, just now like you had you had a
- 40:31Speaker 5: lot of freedom to do that and really shine through.
- 40:35Speaker 6: Yeah, she was written as like she was written as
- 40:39Speaker 6: like she was like, uh, like driving a mini van.
- 40:43Speaker 6: She was much more sort of like a mom and
- 40:47Speaker 6: much more sort of that you know she was, and
- 40:49Speaker 6: I didn't. It is one of those things though, like
- 40:53Speaker 6: now that we're talking about it, of like of what
- 40:56Speaker 6: I'm hearing a lot now for auditioning for going on
- 40:59Speaker 6: tape right is the advice is like how do you
- 41:02Speaker 6: see this part?
- 41:03Speaker 4: Not what they want, but what do you see in
- 41:06Speaker 4: this part?
- 41:07Speaker 6: And I think Hilda was the first time that I
- 41:10Speaker 6: just was like, I think I know who this is,
- 41:14Speaker 6: and I think it's this I don't you know, so
- 41:17Speaker 6: the words were there, but I was like, I'm a
- 41:19Speaker 6: New Yorker.
- 41:21Speaker 4: My grandmother lived in Queens my entire life.
- 41:23Speaker 6: I know Queens, I know New York, I know latinas
- 41:26Speaker 6: in New York and like the way, and I was
- 41:28Speaker 6: just like, so I'm just gonna I'm just gonna do
- 41:32Speaker 6: what I want to do and so I guess that
- 41:35Speaker 6: was kind of the biggest swing was just sort of
- 41:38Speaker 6: like taking that risk of like not going in there
- 41:41Speaker 6: and sort of being this like mini van driving mom.
- 41:47Speaker 6: I just was like, that's not a queen's girl, and
- 41:50Speaker 6: I feel like I'm just gonna do that, And so yeah,
- 41:54Speaker 6: she was I mean, listen, don't get it twisted. My
- 41:56Speaker 6: cousin after she watched the pilot. My cousin Francesca called
- 41:59Speaker 6: me made money.
- 42:00Speaker 8: You all.
- 42:05Speaker 4: That is me.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Coming on, like yo, women in my neighborhood. Man.
- 42:14Speaker 6: And Richard Shepherd, who was the director, I think one
- 42:16Speaker 6: of the coolest compliments I've ever gotten as an actor.
- 42:19Speaker 4: We interviewed him on our pod.
- 42:21Speaker 6: He directed the pilot, Richard Shepherd, and he said, you
- 42:24Speaker 6: weren't the first choice. You know, they make when you
- 42:26Speaker 6: do the studio testy, you bring in your choice, and
- 42:29Speaker 6: you bring in one.
- 42:30Speaker 4: Other person because the studio that's right.
- 42:33Speaker 6: That's not the one that we want. And you were that.
- 42:37Speaker 6: And he said, you came in there and fucking took
- 42:40Speaker 6: that far and just took it and stole it and
- 42:44Speaker 6: ate it and there was no denying. And I like,
- 42:46Speaker 6: to this day, I'm like it's nice. But I think
- 42:50Speaker 6: about that a lot when I'm sort of being timid
- 42:52Speaker 6: in my auditions now or second guessing myself or oh,
- 42:55Speaker 6: you know, I like, you know, and this is only
- 42:59Speaker 6: even recently because we're so much on tape now, so much,
- 43:02Speaker 6: so much on tape.
- 43:03Speaker 4: Yeah, that I just have to be like, have.
- 43:07Speaker 6: Fun, just do what you want to do and be
- 43:09Speaker 6: creative and like let the chips fall where they may be.
- 43:12Speaker 6: You're going to walk away from it feeling like, well,
- 43:16Speaker 6: I left it out on this stage, you.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Know what I mean.
- 43:18Speaker 4: And so I think that was kind of my biggest swing.
- 43:21Speaker 6: And I did shrink a bit after that, Like little
- 43:24Speaker 6: by little, I I was working, but I.
- 43:27Speaker 4: Found myself shrinking and shrinking.
- 43:29Speaker 2: A little bit because the character was so external. So
- 43:32Speaker 2: you felt like, I think my own.
- 43:34Speaker 4: My own.
- 43:36Speaker 6: Second guessing of myself, and that what you were talking
- 43:38Speaker 6: about earlier, of like of not just being present and
- 43:42Speaker 6: not just being in this of thinking like, well, what's
- 43:45Speaker 6: going to be next and if this isn't it, you know,
- 43:47Speaker 6: and just getting in my head too much.
- 43:48Speaker 4: And I think lately I've just sort of been.
- 43:51Speaker 6: Like m you know, So I think I'm you know,
- 43:53Speaker 6: I think like you know, everything it comes and goes in.
- 43:56Speaker 2: How many episodes do you guys?
- 43:57Speaker 8: Do we did twenty three a year was three twenty three?
- 44:04Speaker 2: No, but how many? How I guess in total? Do
- 44:06Speaker 2: you know how many?
- 44:06Speaker 8: You eighty five?
- 44:08Speaker 1: Okay, So I thought it was about that we didn't
- 44:11Speaker 1: hit syndication.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Wait, because you guys went four seasons.
- 44:17Speaker 5: Well.
- 44:17Speaker 2: So my reason why I asked that is because.
- 44:22Speaker 1: It's not technically you what experience that Like I'm shrinking
- 44:27Speaker 1: in the sense the confinement of the role. Sometimes there
- 44:32Speaker 1: is and I'm saying this humbly because I've myself have
- 44:35Speaker 1: been through two hundred and two hundred or two different shows,
- 44:38Speaker 1: and the idea that by by seeing by episode one
- 44:42Speaker 1: hundred you still find the freshness and the character is
- 44:47Speaker 1: something that very few actors and all of us included
- 44:50Speaker 1: in here, have experienced because at some point you have
- 44:53Speaker 1: to flip it. You have to you have to flip
- 44:56Speaker 1: a coin and be like, Okay, I'm gonna go right now.
- 45:00Speaker 2: I'm like a left. I'm like a left, you know,
- 45:02Speaker 2: and I think the trust yourself and trust yourself.
- 45:05Speaker 1: But you know what I learned very quickly from those
- 45:08Speaker 1: feelings is like, once you do these long running shows
- 45:11Speaker 1: and you're do an episode episode and the writers are
- 45:15Speaker 1: like hitting ceilings. It really is now your ass on
- 45:20Speaker 1: screen and you now have to do either a backflip
- 45:23Speaker 1: or wear.
- 45:23Speaker 2: A funny outfit, and you don't want to.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Get to that place, right, But I say that from
- 45:28Speaker 1: like real experience, all right, But I think what I
- 45:32Speaker 1: wanted to give you grace and the fact that like
- 45:36Speaker 1: the maybe there was an ounce of what you're saying
- 45:38Speaker 1: is absolutely right. Like you probably felt like you were
- 45:41Speaker 1: making the short of this. But at some point there's
- 45:43Speaker 1: a level of stamina that has to be reignited.
- 45:45Speaker 2: And nobody teaches us that.
- 45:47Speaker 1: You know, you you say, eighty plus episodes of television.
- 45:52Speaker 1: You know, most successful shows right now are doing eight episodes,
- 45:57Speaker 1: ten episode seasons in three to four years is actually success?
- 46:01Speaker 8: Right?
- 46:01Speaker 2: Yeah? Right?
- 46:02Speaker 1: And I mean at work four years five years is
- 46:06Speaker 1: success right. And they won't do full seasons, they won't
- 46:09Speaker 1: do twenty episodes. I'll do sixteen, you'll do thirteen whatever.
- 46:12Speaker 1: So think about the type of stemina you had to
- 46:14Speaker 1: have at that time really carry those those episodes. But
- 46:17Speaker 1: also when they say action and the cameras on a
- 46:21Speaker 1: single for you, what do you have left to give
- 46:24Speaker 1: in that moment, right, and you've got to muster stuff.
- 46:27Speaker 1: But I think the idea is is like what I
- 46:29Speaker 1: what I learned, And I think you're so open and
- 46:33Speaker 1: you're so given, and I think you're very honest with
- 46:35Speaker 1: your process. It's like that collaboration with the writers, like, yeah.
- 46:41Speaker 2: You know, I learned very dude, I learned you didn't.
- 46:45Speaker 8: It starts and end.
- 46:46Speaker 2: It starts and answer yes, thank you.
- 46:48Speaker 1: And so the last thing I would say to this
- 46:50Speaker 1: is that I learned this way too late, right that
- 46:54Speaker 1: I felt like I needed to talk.
- 46:56Speaker 2: To my showrunners.
- 46:57Speaker 1: I needed to talk to my wrinters and say, what
- 46:59Speaker 1: is my character's theme this season? And that's when I
- 47:04Speaker 1: like life changed for me when I learned that, because
- 47:07Speaker 1: then every year this character was either growing, breaking, you know, changing,
- 47:15Speaker 1: altering this rubbing.
- 47:17Speaker 6: Yeah, And I love that you're using an ing because
- 47:19Speaker 6: I'll remember something that philipsiny Roffman told me back in
- 47:22Speaker 6: the day when we were doing that play a thousand
- 47:25Speaker 6: years ago. He said exactly that, He said, what what
- 47:30Speaker 6: is your character doing? And I was like, well, I'm
- 47:32Speaker 6: you know, whatever it was I was doing, and he
- 47:34Speaker 6: was like, give me an I g give me an I.
- 47:37Speaker 4: In word, are you you know? Yes? It was exactly
- 47:40Speaker 4: are you surviving?
- 47:41Speaker 2: Are you? Yeah?
- 47:42Speaker 4: Exactly are you begging? Are you you know?
- 47:44Speaker 6: And it was so and I think of that all
- 47:46Speaker 6: the time and then for you to just I mean,
- 47:48Speaker 6: I have sort of it has slipped my mind. But
- 47:50Speaker 6: it's so wonderful to hear that, because you're right. It
- 47:54Speaker 6: is something that you can go and say, what is
- 47:57Speaker 6: my character's theme?
- 47:59Speaker 8: What is my joke?
- 48:00Speaker 1: Is like, what is my character's motivation? Right, that's the joke,
- 48:03Speaker 1: But the truth is, like they are themes.
- 48:05Speaker 5: Right.
- 48:05Speaker 1: For example, if you're doing a streaming series, one of
- 48:09Speaker 1: the things that we talk a lot in development at
- 48:11Speaker 1: our company is, you know.
- 48:13Speaker 2: What is this character's arc?
- 48:15Speaker 8: Right?
- 48:15Speaker 1: Where do they end up in the season? And how
- 48:17Speaker 1: do I pitch episode one and two? Where do they
- 48:20Speaker 1: go from there? And like, so what did they learn
- 48:22Speaker 1: by the end of the season that they now have
- 48:24Speaker 1: to use to survive in the next season?
- 48:26Speaker 2: Right, So it's it's like how do you break them
- 48:28Speaker 2: and build them back up? And whatever?
- 48:30Speaker 1: But that was like, you know, somebody gave me that
- 48:32Speaker 1: word of advice, and I give it to everybody, and you guys,
- 48:35Speaker 1: don't need to survictors.
- 48:36Speaker 2: You guys practices in your seasons of this.
- 48:38Speaker 1: But I learned very quickly that if you're going to
- 48:42Speaker 1: play a character and I think you've heard this part
- 48:46Speaker 1: for me before, if you're going to play a character
- 48:49Speaker 1: that you know in a show that takes eight days
- 48:51Speaker 1: to shoot one episode and it's twelve hours a day
- 48:54Speaker 1: and you're doing twenty episodes a season, you better like
- 48:59Speaker 1: the person and you're gonna hang with Like, if you're
- 49:01Speaker 1: gonna hang with this character as your friend for the
- 49:04Speaker 1: next like twenty episodes, which is almost nine and a
- 49:07Speaker 1: half months, I'm just playing the same guy, you know
- 49:11Speaker 1: for a days in like ten takes a scene or
- 49:15Speaker 1: whatever you got, you better like this character you're building,
- 49:18Speaker 1: you know. But on nancia Is, I learned very quickly
- 49:24Speaker 1: that I needed to create a theme where am I
- 49:29Speaker 1: starting what's your two?
- 49:32Speaker 2: What's your three?
- 49:33Speaker 6: I love that because, especially with a procedural, you can
- 49:36Speaker 6: really just get caught up.
- 49:38Speaker 1: You can just add that, you know, and I'll be honest,
- 49:42Speaker 1: I've been caught in a few episodes where I'm just like,
- 49:45Speaker 1: you know, I'm in front of the screen.
- 49:46Speaker 2: And I go, all right, well then let's go get him.
- 49:49Speaker 8: With it, right and but.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Friday, Freddy, do it?
- 49:54Speaker 8: Do it?
- 49:55Speaker 2: Freddy? Freddy? Did you look at the figure prints? I did?
- 50:03Speaker 2: And uh, in case he got the prince back, that's.
- 50:07Speaker 8: What did you say?
- 50:14Speaker 2: It's your daughter?
- 50:20Speaker 1: That commercial break like a rock, like a rock brought
- 50:24Speaker 1: to you by State Farm cannot But my point is
- 50:30Speaker 1: like you'll get this thing where it's like, Okay, I've
- 50:33Speaker 1: done this scene a fucking two times, you know.
- 50:37Speaker 7: I mean, I do feel though that that even if
- 50:40Speaker 7: if your character, you know, like for my character on Hacks,
- 50:44Speaker 7: it surely did not have a character arc like justin
- 50:49Speaker 7: on Ugly Betty right like where it was just he's
- 50:52Speaker 7: he's just he's Deborah's assistant.
- 50:55Speaker 8: Like there's not He.
- 50:58Speaker 7: Had some some moments, you know what I mean, but
- 51:02Speaker 7: there was, but.
- 51:04Speaker 8: There was no kind of like you know real.
- 51:09Speaker 7: We didn't really we didn't learn his last name until
- 51:13Speaker 7: the end of season four, so you know. So it's
- 51:18Speaker 7: also in that way that I would I would I
- 51:20Speaker 7: would say like like, while that's an incredible I mean,
- 51:25Speaker 7: we all would hope to be able to ask what
- 51:28Speaker 7: we're doing and who we are and what are art.
- 51:32Speaker 8: It's like sometimes you just gotta fucking like do something.
- 51:36Speaker 1: With what you're gonna just just just work with what you.
- 51:42Speaker 10: Just gonna be like all right, so there's no directive,
- 51:47Speaker 10: So I'm just gonna say that joke and wiggle off,
- 51:52Speaker 10: you know what I mean.
- 51:53Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I've been in plenty of two shots where I know
- 51:56Speaker 1: I'm not getting a single.
- 51:58Speaker 2: It's just you know, it's just like this ain't my
- 52:03Speaker 2: This ain't my scene. Just say the scene is amazing.
- 52:11Speaker 2: I'm just it ain't about me. But that's good for
- 52:15Speaker 2: you though. It's always about me. Okay.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Well, speaking of fun and finish each other's sandwiches, let's
- 52:27Speaker 1: talk about who cald who to say, Hey, you know
- 52:30Speaker 1: what'll be cool podcast.
- 52:31Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, that's that's really interesting.
- 52:33Speaker 8: I wanted to know that neither of us actually.
- 52:36Speaker 4: Well, well, no, that's not true.
- 52:38Speaker 2: My arranged marriage.
- 52:40Speaker 6: My husband is always like aggravated by us because when
- 52:46Speaker 6: we all hang out, like he hangs out at my
- 52:49Speaker 6: house all the time, and and my husband calls us
- 52:52Speaker 6: table for two because my husband's sitting there and the
- 52:55Speaker 6: two of us are just like my husband's like like.
- 53:01Speaker 3: Well, walk he'll like walk away, like he's.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Just like wow, and so everyone, he's.
- 53:08Speaker 6: So cool, but he's always just like table for two,
- 53:11Speaker 6: you guys just okay, like hello, and so he was
- 53:14Speaker 6: always like, you guys should just have a podcast, and
- 53:16Speaker 6: so we've always been talking about it, but.
- 53:19Speaker 7: Then but we never went to seek it out. And
- 53:21Speaker 7: then and then Terry Weinberg, who was one of the
- 53:25Speaker 7: producers of Ugly Betty, just straight up called us one
- 53:30Speaker 7: day and was like, hey, like, do you want to
- 53:34Speaker 7: do like a Betty Rewatch podcast?
- 53:36Speaker 8: And we were you know.
- 53:39Speaker 7: I guess that the yeah, the angle was just kind
- 53:41Speaker 7: of like also that I have never seen the.
- 53:43Speaker 2: Show perfect.
- 53:46Speaker 7: The show, yeah, and and uh, and then we started
- 53:50Speaker 7: doing it, and I just feel like one of the
- 53:52Speaker 7: things that I enjoyed the most about doing it, other
- 53:54Speaker 7: than watching the show for the first time and talking
- 53:57Speaker 7: about it with Anna who's seen it four thousand times,
- 54:00Speaker 7: is also just kind.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Of it was like a subliminal attack, just you know, yeah,
- 54:05Speaker 1: it was a little it was.
- 54:06Speaker 7: A little aggressive and and and you felt it because
- 54:10Speaker 7: it was and and I think that just in the
- 54:15Speaker 7: beginning of the episodes though, like we kind of like
- 54:18Speaker 7: check in with each other and we get to just
- 54:20Speaker 7: kind of shoot the shit a little bit and and
- 54:23Speaker 7: and and you know, we we get to have like
- 54:25Speaker 7: our our it's like every Thursday when we record the pod,
- 54:30Speaker 7: it's like on it comes over before and we.
- 54:32Speaker 8: Hang out and we have like a little.
- 54:35Speaker 7: Nach and like just like kick it before and and
- 54:38Speaker 7: it's so it's just it's become this like tradition in
- 54:42Speaker 7: a way that that just.
- 54:43Speaker 8: Feels it feels so organic.
- 54:45Speaker 7: Obviously we're such close friends, and I just feel like
- 54:50Speaker 7: it just makes perfect sense.
- 54:51Speaker 8: That we would be doing it.
- 54:52Speaker 7: Yeah, it just never really crossed our mind that we
- 54:55Speaker 7: would do it right, because I mean, I feel like
- 54:58Speaker 7: we talk about our experience on the show all the time,
- 55:02Speaker 7: you know, sitting around the kitchen table, but I think
- 55:05Speaker 7: that it was a very different experience to kind of
- 55:08Speaker 7: like put a microphone in front of you. I think
- 55:10Speaker 7: that in the beginning of this, of our first season,
- 55:13Speaker 7: it was just kind of like it's just really different
- 55:17Speaker 7: when like this is just right here.
- 55:19Speaker 4: But we also are approaching it.
- 55:21Speaker 6: I think also because like what I was saying Leasena,
- 55:24Speaker 6: I just saw Freddy this, We just saw Freddy this weekend,
- 55:27Speaker 6: and the show was touching on on so many like
- 55:30Speaker 6: it was touching on immigration and healthcare and you know,
- 55:36Speaker 6: queer spaces and you know, and all of that. We
- 55:39Speaker 6: were talking about this twenty years ago, so our pot
- 55:41Speaker 6: also we just kind of talk about it also from
- 55:44Speaker 6: a cultural standpoint of like, you know.
- 55:46Speaker 4: Like what can stay there?
- 55:48Speaker 6: Like would Rebecca Remain really be playing a trans character now?
- 55:51Speaker 4: Like probably not right.
- 55:53Speaker 6: You know, but but so like it's fun to be
- 55:55Speaker 6: able to sort of talk about all of those things
- 55:57Speaker 6: that are still relevant right right.
- 56:00Speaker 7: They're talking about you know, Ignacio and immigration and I
- 56:06Speaker 7: mean what now we know as as being ice or
- 56:10Speaker 7: you know, is still all extremely relevant and extremely pertinent.
- 56:16Speaker 7: And I think that the show is just it really
- 56:22Speaker 7: stands the test of time. And I just feel like, well.
- 56:25Speaker 2: It was also genre banding.
- 56:28Speaker 1: It was genre altering, and if you really think about it,
- 56:31Speaker 1: like it paid the way for a lot of you know,
- 56:34Speaker 1: high concept comedy. You know, it's that off the wall
- 56:38Speaker 1: where you could you know, I mean, we come from
- 56:40Speaker 1: a generational TV that would allow themselves to do dream
- 56:43Speaker 1: sequences and actually mean them, not like do them in
- 56:47Speaker 1: a cheesy way, like actually this dream sequence has means
- 56:50Speaker 1: something to the show, and they're a part of the DNA,
- 56:52Speaker 1: which I think is the magic of being that free,
- 56:55Speaker 1: to have characters that can be this colorful, and you know,
- 56:58Speaker 1: and to bring credible actors like Freddie Rodriguez on your show.
- 57:03Speaker 4: Yeah, we got so like you.
- 57:04Speaker 1: We were talking offline about the fact that, like, I
- 57:06Speaker 1: saw a picture of you on the show, and you.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Look like you're nine years old. You know, you look
- 57:11Speaker 2: he looks like you. I know he has Yeah, he's
- 57:15Speaker 2: so hot.
- 57:17Speaker 5: You know that that that show came at a time
- 57:20Speaker 5: I really needed it, you know, I was.
- 57:22Speaker 2: I was.
- 57:23Speaker 5: I just came off a five season of six Feet,
- 57:26Speaker 5: and I did a bunch of gritty films.
- 57:29Speaker 2: And I was so I was so touched.
- 57:32Speaker 5: I was so surprised that you all saw me as
- 57:34Speaker 5: like a as a as a romantic comedic counterpart to America,
- 57:39Speaker 5: which is so far from what I was doing at
- 57:41Speaker 5: that time.
- 57:43Speaker 7: Uh.
- 57:43Speaker 5: And it's a funny story, man. Actually I turned down
- 57:47Speaker 5: this movie hurt Locker to do every Betty Wow. Yeah,
- 57:52Speaker 5: god damn it.
- 57:52Speaker 1: I mean, see what you guys did to this guy.
- 57:55Speaker 1: He could have been Knock and the Avengers.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Right now, we are.
- 57:59Speaker 8: So happy that we had you.
- 58:01Speaker 1: You could have been however, however, you could have been
- 58:05Speaker 1: in the Avengers No, her Lock at that time was
- 58:08Speaker 1: just some like some like indie film that took place
- 58:11Speaker 1: in Morocco.
- 58:12Speaker 2: Nobody could have ever predicted it was going to do that,
- 58:17Speaker 2: not just carry on so much. I need.
- 58:24Speaker 5: If I would have done that, it would have taken
- 58:26Speaker 5: me away from my family, and I was I was to.
- 58:32Speaker 2: No man. I needed, I needed, I needed to do
- 58:35Speaker 2: something one life.
- 58:36Speaker 8: You wouldn't be sitting here right now, you know.
- 58:41Speaker 2: No, you know, can I tell you something? Can I
- 58:43Speaker 2: tell you something about Fred?
- 58:45Speaker 1: Is that you know, Well, he's trying to tell like
- 58:47Speaker 1: a really beautiful, earnest story about why he in his
- 58:51Speaker 1: life felt ugly but it really was the blessing of
- 58:54Speaker 1: his life, and he was making the contrast of like
- 58:56Speaker 1: at that time, that's the last thing he wanted to do.
- 58:59Speaker 1: No matter how successful, access to what he means. I
- 59:02Speaker 1: cannot help but to hold him accountable to his greatness,
- 59:09Speaker 1: because I think he's one of the best fucking actors
- 59:12Speaker 1: I've seen in my generation.
- 59:14Speaker 2: Right, And your shit is gonna live forever.
- 59:18Speaker 1: Bro So when you say things like that, the fact
- 59:20Speaker 1: that your proximity at all these like crazy franchises, yet
- 59:25Speaker 1: you still have incredible franchises that are always going to
- 59:28Speaker 1: be not only quoted, they're gonna be prototypes. They're gonna
- 59:32Speaker 1: be the blueprints. And they have been the blueprints of
- 59:34Speaker 1: a lot of movies that happened to right now. So
- 59:35Speaker 1: when you talk about this thing and you say her Lacker,
- 59:38Speaker 1: it makes it just it brings me joy that you
- 59:41Speaker 1: could have had.
- 59:42Speaker 4: That Is that the first thing you're hearing.
- 59:46Speaker 1: No, I've heard the versions of the story before, but
- 59:48Speaker 1: the point is like, it's like the fact that, like,
- 59:53Speaker 1: you know, it's almost cooler that he turned it down.
- 59:58Speaker 1: The cooler that you went to go do ugly truth
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: is Jeremy Renner really needed it?
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: You know, it wasn't Jeremy Runner, as we know.
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: At that time, that movie was just like an indie
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: film that was happening in in Morocco, right.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: And and and I.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: Remember like talking to some friends that had just shot
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: Morocco and.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: They were like, oh man, it's got food poisoning over there.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: I just got man, I'd been away from the kids.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: I was like, no, man, the movie is amazing.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: I'm just gonna go be funny. But had you done
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: a lot of comedy?
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: I mean, had you know?
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: No?
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: I did? I did?
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: I did you know a couple episodes of Scrubs and
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: that was the extent of it. No, that's why I
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: was like shocked that you guys saw me as in
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: romantic comedy. So I was super flattered and it allowed
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: me to be home and be with my kids and.
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: Cool, I mean I especially because I mean you're, yeah,
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: you're iconic, especially like among the bodiquas of it Allso
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: it's like, yeah, I mean that was so cool.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: I still was upset that you wan't held his love interest.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: But what, oh my god, you want to kiss now?
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Or we can just move this mic figure it out,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: but mean my camera, so it's kind of fake.
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: No, I had to Eddie Sibrill, that's a right, yeah.
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: And then you had Ralph Macchio, right, oh yeah, and
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: then and then Adam, but.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: I mean Adam, it is still a got. It was great,
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: he's great, it's great, but he's too tall. That's what Freddy.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Freddy would have been muscles, and Freddy's doing muscles, not
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: so I don't. I don't want that magic Mike in
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: my life.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: I don't want magic Mike in my life.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: You know, just all the ones.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: That told me came back and you know, it doesn't
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: take the Yankee hot hat off.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: You know, it's like you from New York, He's from
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: New York. He's just like, oh my god, who you
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: don't want yourself, You don't want the bad boy from
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: down the block where you grew up. And then the Heights.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: You know, well, you know, well there's had a bunch
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: of great directors come through too, right like Victor Nelly.
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: Oh yeah, God.
- 1:02:31Speaker 8: We just had Nelly on the on the podcast, Yeah, on.
- 1:02:34Speaker 7: The Latest and and it was it was so so
- 1:02:38Speaker 7: awesome to talk to him about it because even though
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: we're recapping the first season, whenever we have a guest on,
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: that's just kind of a full episode, whether it be
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: a cast member or you know, we had Mark Worthington,
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: who was our productions design it. Yes, we talk about
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: just kind of the full show, like just just the
- 1:03:00Speaker 7: entire series. And you know, a really great part of
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: the episode I think with Victor Nelly that we talked
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: about was Victor Nelly directed or he did not direct
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: but was an executive producer.
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: At this point in the last season.
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: When we did the kissing episode, like the first gay
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: kiss on national television between two was minors yeah, it was.
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: I mean I think that they had done it like
- 1:03:32Speaker 7: on Dawson's Creek, but they were all like in their like.
- 1:03:34Speaker 8: Twenty or something.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I don't believe it or not. Seventy Show had the
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: first gay kiss. It was Jordan Gordon Levitt and to
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: for Grace right and was crazy right.
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: And we were and and it was we were still
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: like we were I think we were.
- 1:04:00Speaker 8: Fifteen. And so there's you know.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: Imagine what that scene would have meant for so many
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: young people.
- 1:04:07Speaker 8: It still does, you know, I mean it still does.
- 1:04:10Speaker 7: And and but I wasn't out fully yet and it
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: started to become we had a different director, Victor Nelly
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: wasn't directing it, but he was there on the day
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: and I and I recall so much like this.
- 1:04:26Speaker 8: This director wanted to get this shot right.
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: I understand, and it was a really complicated, you know,
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: technical shot. Fine, but I mean I think that we
- 1:04:36Speaker 7: might have done it like sixteen seventeen times. And I
- 1:04:41Speaker 7: was so uncomfortable, and I remember kind of storming out
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: and being like I need Victor Nelly right now, and
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: Nelly kind of coming to the rescue and essentially being
- 1:04:57Speaker 7: like we got it, Like we have to move on
- 1:04:59Speaker 7: and like and really you know, really advocating for me.
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: And I think that there's when you get that kind
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: of when you get that kind of family, when you
- 1:05:10Speaker 7: get that kind of support system around you when you're
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: on a production, it doesn't matter how long that production
- 1:05:17Speaker 7: goes on or whatever. When you feel that sense of safety,
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: it's like you feel invincible. Like it's like I could
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: do I can throw kind of like shit at the
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: wall and feel like protected as an artist, you know
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: what I mean. It's not about like, oh I don't
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: want to do this anymore. It was like I feel
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: uncomfortable and I knew that there was someone in the
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: room that had my back.
- 1:05:44Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: And I.
- 1:05:48Speaker 8: Think that we need so much more of that.
- 1:05:53Speaker 7: And I think that especially as producers as you know,
- 1:05:59Speaker 7: like we need so much more of like those safe spaces.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's an exciting time to see that so many
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: of our community members, multicultural community members are getting behind
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: the camera so much more because those environments are going
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: to be not just normalized, they're going to be more
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: frequently found. And I think that that's, to your points,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: a greater minder of continuing to cultivate that we had
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: the camera like who wants to be a writer, who wants.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: To be a director, who wants to be a producer,
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: because the.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Artist's job, it's like what the artist job is? You know,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: it's sometimes thank it sometimes there's glory, but the truth
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: is like the spaces for artists are not going to
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: exist to mimic life if we don't have people behind
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: the camera like you guys that are continuing to amplify developing,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: creating and all that. And you know, we're just so
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: proud to have you guys here on the show and.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: We're so thank you to see you guys. It's like
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: a beautiful thing for me to see.
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: It's really cool, like put us on your podcast.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: A part of the same family, so it makes it
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: makes sense.
- 1:07:02Speaker 8: Yeah, man, I mean this is this is so much fun.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: And also let's remind everyone that your podcast is under
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Michael Tuda. Podcast Family is available everywhere you get your podcasts.
