Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Mariners sign back Josh Naylor, Kyle Tucker dark horse team, Phillies offseason outlook
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ken Rosehal hear you here with you for the next
- 0:07Speaker 1: I don't know twenty five minutes or so. We do
- 0:10Speaker 1: have some stuff to talk about today, some more stuff
- 0:13Speaker 1: than usual actually at this time of year, because we
- 0:16Speaker 1: have a major free agent signing last night, news coming
- 0:20Speaker 1: out Josh Naylor five years with the Seattle Mariners. And
- 0:23Speaker 1: you might say five years, well, Josh Naylor is not
- 0:27Speaker 1: even twenty nine yet, doesn't turn twenty nine until June.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We do not have the money yet. The expectation is
- 0:33Speaker 1: that it will be somewhere in the ninety million to
- 0:35Speaker 1: one hundred million dollar range. I would not be surprised
- 0:38Speaker 1: if it was one hundred, but again we don't know
- 0:40Speaker 1: the exact figures yet. And for the Mariners, this is
- 0:43Speaker 1: a guy that they targeted, that they wanted to have,
- 0:46Speaker 1: that they traded for in July and decided, you know what,
- 0:49Speaker 1: this guy is really important to us, and he is.
- 0:53Speaker 1: You saw what he did for the Mariners toward the
- 0:55Speaker 1: end of the regular season, and of course you saw
- 0:57Speaker 1: what he did in the postseason, batting three with a
- 1:01Speaker 1: nine to sixty six ops in October. In fifty one
- 1:04Speaker 1: played appearances. Beyond all that, Josh Nayler is a guy
- 1:08Speaker 1: who has a lot of savvy for the game. We
- 1:11Speaker 1: saw that in the way he stole bases this season,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and he also brings a certain edge, an edge that
- 1:17Speaker 1: you don't see in a lot of players today. And
- 1:19Speaker 1: it's not that guys don't want to succeed, but he
- 1:22Speaker 1: has a fire about him in a way about him.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Teammates love him, and he just seems to elevate the
- 1:29Speaker 1: teams that he is on. It's a guy who is
- 1:32Speaker 1: just a really good player and worthy of the five
- 1:36Speaker 1: year deal considering his age. That's the key thing here now.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Obviously the Mets are waiting to sign or trying to
- 1:43Speaker 1: sign Pete Alonzo, and five years is going to be
- 1:46Speaker 1: the minimum for him. I would expect this kind of
- 1:48Speaker 1: sets the bar, at least in the term. I don't
- 1:51Speaker 1: know that the money will be anywhere the same because
- 1:54Speaker 1: Alonso is the more accomplished player, but the Mets people
- 1:58Speaker 1: or Mets writers noted last night, just takes an option
- 2:01Speaker 1: off the board. If the Mets do not resign Alonso.
- 2:04Speaker 1: We'll see about all that. We'll see how that all
- 2:06Speaker 1: plays out. Also with regard to the Mariners, this is
- 2:10Speaker 1: only step one. They still have a need either for
- 2:13Speaker 1: a second baseman or a third baseman, and the likely
- 2:17Speaker 1: next target is Jorge Polanco. This is a guy who,
- 2:20Speaker 1: of course, like Naylor, was extremely valuable for them, especially
- 2:23Speaker 1: in the postseason. A guy who was coming off knee
- 2:26Speaker 1: surgery at this time last year, but got healthier as
- 2:30Speaker 1: the year went on, and he is someone that they
- 2:33Speaker 1: will probably resign if they do to play second base,
- 2:37Speaker 1: but also to DH they want to keep him healthy.
- 2:39Speaker 1: That would be the key. With Jorge Polanco. They have
- 2:42Speaker 1: Cole Young at second base as well. Didn't really hit
- 2:45Speaker 1: much in his debut, but he is a guy they
- 2:48Speaker 1: are extremely high on. He was their number one prospect
- 2:51Speaker 1: just a year ago, and their infield is interesting also
- 2:54Speaker 1: for another reason. Their top prospect now, Colt Emerson, is coming.
- 3:00Speaker 1: He is widely seen as a shortstop but can also
- 3:02Speaker 1: play third base. I don't know that he'll be ready
- 3:05Speaker 1: for opening Day. The Mariners don't know that, but at
- 3:08Speaker 1: third base last year they played Ben Williamson, a lot
- 3:12Speaker 1: great defender, didn't hit. Traded for Ajohanno Suarez. So if
- 3:16Speaker 1: they get Polanco or even sign a third baseman, whether
- 3:19Speaker 1: it's Suarez or Murkama. They can do some things then
- 3:23Speaker 1: and wait for Emerson fill him in JP Crawford or
- 3:26Speaker 1: free agent after this season, so maybe that ultimately will
- 3:30Speaker 1: be Emerson's spot. The Mariners are not only a team
- 3:33Speaker 1: that was quite accomplished at the major league level this year,
- 3:36Speaker 1: but also a team with one of the best farm
- 3:39Speaker 1: systems in the game. So Naylor for five years, the
- 3:43Speaker 1: first signing, the first big signing of the offseason. You
- 3:45Speaker 1: see right there, Aaron Gleaman of the Athletic They ranked
- 3:50Speaker 1: Josh Naylor number fourteen of all the free agents on
- 3:53Speaker 1: the Athletics Big Board, and Aaron said, I just had
- 3:56Speaker 1: a very hard time seeing him anywhere, but re signed
- 3:59Speaker 1: with the Mariners. Most everyone agreed with that. This was
- 4:02Speaker 1: hardly a surprise last night. Maybe the timing was it
- 4:05Speaker 1: was pretty early for a free agency. It's only November
- 4:08Speaker 1: sixteenth last night, November seventeenth today, So good for the
- 4:12Speaker 1: Mariners getting this done. Step one for them in this
- 4:16Speaker 1: free agency. Also something to look at here a team
- 4:21Speaker 1: that we've talked about a little bit as a team
- 4:24Speaker 1: that's going to be quite interesting this offseason. And Matt Gelbo,
- 4:27Speaker 1: the Athletic wrote a fascinating notes column on this team
- 4:31Speaker 1: just yesterday, and that team is the Philadelphia Phillies. Why
- 4:35Speaker 1: are they so interesting? A couple of reasons. One, they
- 4:38Speaker 1: want to resign their free agents, Kyle Schwarber and j
- 4:41Speaker 1: t Romuto, and yet they can't do it right away.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Both these players are testing the market. Schwarber is a
- 4:49Speaker 1: guy who is coming off a monster season, is in
- 4:52Speaker 1: some demand. Now you might say, well, who is going
- 4:55Speaker 1: to sign him besides the Phillies. I'm not sure exactly
- 4:58Speaker 1: which team might be. You can look at the Mets
- 5:01Speaker 1: if they lose Alonso, the Red Sox perhaps, or the
- 5:04Speaker 1: left handed the Cubs, the Rangers, the Reds. All of
- 5:07Speaker 1: these teams would seemingly have an interest. But my goodness,
- 5:11Speaker 1: fifty six home runs last year one hundred and thirty
- 5:13Speaker 1: two RBIs one I'm sorry, nine to twenty eight ops
- 5:18Speaker 1: second in the NL MVP.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I trust that there are teams besides the Philadelphia Phillies
- 5:24Speaker 2: that want to sign Kyle Schwarber, and that is a
- 5:27Speaker 2: reason why the Phillies can't get this done necessarily right away.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's gonna want to see what's out there, so it's
- 5:34Speaker 1: holding up the Phillies right now, and that's just the
- 5:37Speaker 1: way it's going to have to be. At some point.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I guess there is a point where they'll need an answer,
- 5:43Speaker 1: but we're not nearly there yet. Also with the Phillies,
- 5:46Speaker 1: they are looking to trade a left handed reliever, perhaps
- 5:49Speaker 1: maybe Matt Strom. And one other interesting thing in Matt's
- 5:54Speaker 1: notes column, they're talking about trading off the major league
- 5:58Speaker 1: roster now. Dave Dombrowski, as president of operations, not known
- 6:02Speaker 1: for trading anything but prospects and has always been willing
- 6:05Speaker 1: to trade prospects. But they're at a point now where
- 6:09Speaker 1: they've got some I wouldn't call it duplication at the
- 6:11Speaker 1: major league level, but some players that they can move,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and this way, by trading off the major league roster,
- 6:18Speaker 1: they can keep some of their better prospects. They're a
- 6:21Speaker 1: little thin right now, and they know that. After the
- 6:23Speaker 1: deadline they made some big moves. So that is something
- 6:26Speaker 1: to watch with the Phillies as well. Strom Castianos's future
- 6:31Speaker 1: is in big trouble there. They could trade Bom, they
- 6:33Speaker 1: could trade someone else. They're going to be an interesting team.
- 6:36Speaker 1: And finally, before we sign off on this first segment,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I want to talk about Jose Ramirez. Here's a guy
- 6:43Speaker 1: that we often refer to myself included, as underrated. I
- 6:48Speaker 1: don't know that underrated is the right way to look
- 6:50Speaker 1: at Jose Ramirez anymore. He's not underrated, but is he underappreciated?
- 6:56Speaker 1: I would suggest that he definitely is underappreciated. Here's a
- 7:00Speaker 1: guy who finished third in the MVP voting. That was
- 7:03Speaker 1: his sixth top five finish in his career. You see
- 7:06Speaker 1: the little ex post from the Guardians right there. Thirty homers,
- 7:10Speaker 1: thirty four doubles, forty four steals, eight sixty three ops.
- 7:14Speaker 1: This is just a really good player. And some people
- 7:17Speaker 1: have said, well, it's he a Hall of Famer, and
- 7:21Speaker 1: the Guardians referred to him as cooper'stown bound. And I
- 7:24Speaker 1: would suggest, yes, that he is definitely on a Hall
- 7:27Speaker 1: of Fame track. Jason Stark of the Athletic who covers
- 7:31Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame better than anyone outside of maybe
- 7:34Speaker 1: j Jaffier Fangras. They're different, but they both cover the
- 7:37Speaker 1: Hall of Fame exhaustively. Jason had him across the fifty
- 7:41Speaker 1: yard line in his July analysis of Hall of Fame candidates.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Across the fifth yard line is of course, heading toward
- 7:48Speaker 1: the end zone, and he is not yet at three
- 7:51Speaker 1: hundred homers and three hundred steels, though he should get
- 7:54Speaker 1: there this next season. And keep this in mind, no
- 7:58Speaker 1: third baseman has reached both those totals three hundred home
- 8:02Speaker 1: runs and three hundred steals for his career. That way,
- 8:06Speaker 1: if he gets there, and he should obviously he's in
- 8:08Speaker 1: the two eighties with both, that would make him a
- 8:11Speaker 1: unique candidate. Also staying with his team the entire career,
- 8:15Speaker 1: all of these things kind of recommend Jose Ramirez as
- 8:19Speaker 1: a Hall of Fame player. So underrated, No, you can't
- 8:22Speaker 1: call him underrated when he keeps finishing in the top
- 8:25Speaker 1: five for MVP, but underappreciated certainly. And if he wasn't
- 8:29Speaker 1: in the same league as I don't know, Aaron Judge
- 8:32Speaker 1: and cal raally, then maybe at some point Jose Ramirez
- 8:36Speaker 1: would be a stronger candidate for MVP. But this guy
- 8:39Speaker 1: almost single handedly offensively lifted the Guardians to their shocking
- 8:44Speaker 1: Ale Central title nineteen and four down the stretch. He
- 8:48Speaker 1: is a really special player, and he was acknowledged yet
- 8:52Speaker 1: again in the MVP vote. All right, a lot more
- 8:55Speaker 1: to come. We're going to talk about the qualifying offer.
- 8:57Speaker 1: The deadline is tomorrow, and it's something that is quite
- 9:01Speaker 1: interesting this season, in particular, stay with us inside Dish
- 9:05Speaker 1: coming up next AJ.
- 9:07Speaker 3: We're going to do things a little bit differently here.
- 9:10Speaker 3: I am wearing the Perfect Gene and I remember seeing
- 9:13Speaker 3: ads for the Perfect Gene like most comfortable fit ever,
- 9:17Speaker 3: perfect fit on your body, and I was like, I'm
- 9:21Speaker 3: not buying it. Now I'm buying it and we're showing
- 9:25Speaker 3: it off on.
- 9:25Speaker 4: FT plea, please get off my desk. First of all, Scott.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Second of all, I was with you. I was skeptical
- 9:30Speaker 4: about Perfect Gene and then I got a pair and
- 9:32Speaker 4: the fitting was perfect and my body's not hard to
- 9:34Speaker 4: fix is I got a big old rear and big
- 9:37Speaker 4: old legs from Laarers of Squatting, and they fit perfectly.
- 9:39Speaker 4: They're stretchy, they're comfortable, they're fashionable. They're everything I look
- 9:43Speaker 4: for in a gene. And now I have an extra
- 9:45Speaker 4: pair and I'm gonna wear them all the time.

- 10:06Speaker 3: tell them Foul Territory sent you.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Well well, well, well, all right, time now for the
- 10:16Speaker 1: inside Dish. Now that we've seen our two Blue Genes models,
- 10:19Speaker 1: Aj Pazinski and Scott Brun, the inside Dish is something
- 10:22Speaker 1: where we talk about maybe a story I've written, maybe
- 10:25Speaker 1: a trend in the game, maybe something else going on
- 10:27Speaker 1: in the game this week, kind of a combination of
- 10:30Speaker 1: all three. We've got the qualifying off for deadline tomorrow.
- 10:33Speaker 1: The qualifying off for this year worth twenty two point
- 10:36Speaker 1: zero two five million, almost over, I should say over
- 10:40Speaker 1: twenty two million for one year. Thirteen players received it,
- 10:44Speaker 1: and when I talked with an executive last week at
- 10:47Speaker 1: the GM meetings, he said, every one of them is
- 10:49Speaker 1: going to reject it. No one wants to be a
- 10:51Speaker 1: free agent with the lockout potentially looming next off season.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And I thought about that, and I asked some other
- 10:58Speaker 1: people about that, and even with the lockout looming, and
- 11:02Speaker 1: I understand what the GM was saying. He's saying, hey,
- 11:05Speaker 1: no one wants a one year deal then to become
- 11:07Speaker 1: a free agent again with a lockout scenario. If you
- 11:10Speaker 1: go back to twenty twenty one, when the lockout took
- 11:14Speaker 1: effect on December first, what happened right before that? Do
- 11:17Speaker 1: you guys remember, I remember was a fleet free agent flurry.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Siemen and Segy I'm sorry, Semeon and Seger Kovere Seger
- 11:26Speaker 1: and Marcus Semon signed huge deals with the Rangers. Max
- 11:30Speaker 1: Schurzer signed his big deal with the Mets. You also saw,
- 11:33Speaker 1: obviously al Garcia sign. You saw Edward Rodriguez sign. There
- 11:37Speaker 1: was a flurry right before December first hit, and it
- 11:40Speaker 1: wasn't as if teams shunned free agents. So I don't
- 11:43Speaker 1: expect teams to shun free agents either this offseason or
- 11:47Speaker 1: next off season, because even if we lose time in
- 11:50Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven, and I don't know that, I expect
- 11:53Speaker 1: that to happen necessarily. Even if we do, even if
- 11:56Speaker 1: we miss games, eventually the sport's going to return. Teams
- 12:00Speaker 1: to need players, and players are going to need jobs.
- 12:03Speaker 1: So with that, there are a few players who were
- 12:07Speaker 1: offer qualifying offers who might indeed consider it taking them.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And I wrote about this last week with Will Simon
- 12:14Speaker 1: and Katie Wu and I focused. We focused on four players,
- 12:18Speaker 1: Labor Torres, Trent Grisham, Brandon Woodriff, and showed to Imanagan.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I'll go through them one by one because they're all
- 12:26Speaker 1: interesting in their own ways. Now, Torres is a guy,
- 12:30Speaker 1: if you remember last year, monster first half a twelve
- 12:34Speaker 1: ops before the All Star Game, named to the All
- 12:36Speaker 1: Star Team, one of a number of Tigers who made
- 12:39Speaker 1: the All Star Team, and then he fell off in
- 12:43Speaker 1: the second half. He struggled. He had a six fifty
- 12:46Speaker 1: nine ops after the All Star Game, and we learned
- 12:49Speaker 1: later that he was dealing with a sports tourney. I
- 12:51Speaker 1: had sports TURNEA surgery after the season, so teams might
- 12:56Speaker 1: be a little bit wary because of that. But he's
- 12:59Speaker 1: expected to be ready by spring training. So he's a
- 13:02Speaker 1: guy who signed a one year, fifteen million dollar deal
- 13:05Speaker 1: with the Tigers last off season. This offseason, well, he
- 13:10Speaker 1: has coming off a better year. He turns twenty nine
- 13:12Speaker 1: next month. This is the same age that Josh Naylor
- 13:15Speaker 1: will be next season, and he just got a five
- 13:17Speaker 1: year deal, and that's a relatively young free agent, as
- 13:21Speaker 1: we know, So will Glabor Torres take this deal? Well,
- 13:25Speaker 1: he was happy in Detroit, comfortable there, and twenty two
- 13:29Speaker 1: million is a big number in a multi year deal.
- 13:32Speaker 1: He is unlikely to get twenty two million, So maybe
- 13:37Speaker 1: he takes one year and says, you know what, I'll
- 13:39Speaker 1: do this again, go out next season, next off season
- 13:43Speaker 1: without a qualifying offer, saddling me, without the potential for
- 13:47Speaker 1: a team to lose draft picks by signing me, and
- 13:50Speaker 1: maybe be that much more attractive. It's an interesting choice.
- 13:53Speaker 1: He'd still be relatively young going into next off season,
- 13:56Speaker 1: turning thirty in twenty twenty seven, so I'll be interested
- 14:01Speaker 1: to see what he does. My guess is he rejects,
- 14:04Speaker 1: but I would not be surprised to see him take
- 14:06Speaker 1: it either. Now. Trent Grisham is another interesting taste, maybe
- 14:11Speaker 1: even more interesting than Torres. Here's a guy that a
- 14:15Speaker 1: year ago the Yankees weren't even certain they were going
- 14:18Speaker 1: to tender him, offer him a contract, ends up taking
- 14:21Speaker 1: a pay cut from five and a half million to
- 14:24Speaker 1: five million, and then what happened We all saw it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Thirty four homers, career high and a career high eleven
- 14:31Speaker 1: eight eleven ops. A thirty four home run total was
- 14:35Speaker 1: double his previous career high. So he too is a
- 14:39Speaker 1: younger free agent plays next season at twenty nine. The
- 14:43Speaker 1: question with him is is he a center fielder. His
- 14:46Speaker 1: defensive metrics went down last year significantly. He wasn't the
- 14:50Speaker 1: center fielder he was earlier in his career, but a
- 14:54Speaker 1: number of his offensive metrics were really intriguing. Chase rate
- 14:58Speaker 1: fourth lowest in the majors, behind only Sodo Glabor Torres
- 15:03Speaker 1: and Kyle Tucker. Walkerrate was the ninth highest. He did
- 15:06Speaker 1: a lot of good things at the plate. He's kind
- 15:08Speaker 1: of remade himself, changed his mental approach, changed things in
- 15:12Speaker 1: the box. He's done a lot of good things offensively.
- 15:15Speaker 1: So in a market short on center fielders, he really
- 15:18Speaker 1: is number three behind Tucker and Cody Bellinger. Will they
- 15:22Speaker 1: reject I kind of think he's going to reject the offer,
- 15:26Speaker 1: and if he does, then the Yankees have some more
- 15:29Speaker 1: interesting choices in the outfield. They have said they would
- 15:32Speaker 1: be comfortable with both Grisham and Bellinger if they could
- 15:35Speaker 1: resign Bellinger, and if that happens, they've got some interesting
- 15:39Speaker 1: choices with Spencer Jones, whether to trade him or not,
- 15:42Speaker 1: but we'll see what Trent Grisham decides. He is going
- 15:45Speaker 1: to be an interesting guy tomorrow to watch. Finally, two
- 15:50Speaker 1: starting pitchers, Brandon Woodriff and Shoeda in Monaga. Now they
- 15:54Speaker 1: are much different as far as their circumstances, but they're
- 15:57Speaker 1: both starters, and starting pitchers generally in free agency generate
- 16:02Speaker 1: the most fervent markets, the most interest because of course
- 16:05Speaker 1: they are in such short supply quality starting pitchers. That
- 16:09Speaker 1: is now, Brandon Woodriff is a really interesting case. You
- 16:13Speaker 1: would think this guy's definitely going to take it. He
- 16:16Speaker 1: turned thirty three in February, missed all of twenty four
- 16:19Speaker 1: coming off shoulder surgery, made only twelve starts for Milwaukee
- 16:23Speaker 1: last season, and then was shut down in September with
- 16:28Speaker 1: a separate issue. So here's a guy twelve starts in
- 16:31Speaker 1: two years and he's getting off for twenty two million.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Might want to take it, but I don't know that
- 16:36Speaker 1: that's the case. He had a great performance in those
- 16:39Speaker 1: twelve starts. He had a three point two strikeout walk
- 16:43Speaker 1: race that was the best of his career, albeit in
- 16:46Speaker 1: a limited sample. So Mac boyd, if you remember last year,
- 16:50Speaker 1: the same number of starts as Brandon Woodriff, including postseason,
- 16:53Speaker 1: got twenty nine million for two years from the Chicago Cubs,
- 16:56Speaker 1: Brandon Woodriff might be able to do the same thing.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Excuse me, and then the show to Imanaga, thirty two
- 17:03Speaker 1: years old. The Cubs turned down his three year option,
- 17:06Speaker 1: he turned down a player option in return, and he
- 17:09Speaker 1: goes out in the open market after getting the qualifying
- 17:12Speaker 1: offer from the Cubs. So what will he do. He's
- 17:16Speaker 1: an interesting guy because he wasn't as good in his
- 17:18Speaker 1: second year as he was in his first. But I
- 17:21Speaker 1: would still expect him to get a multi year. So
- 17:24Speaker 1: with Woodruff and Imenaga, because they are starting pitchers, because
- 17:28Speaker 1: the demand for starting pitchers is so intense, I would
- 17:32Speaker 1: expect that they're going to get significant multi year interest.
- 17:36Speaker 1: They are among the better free agents out there, beyond
- 17:39Speaker 1: the top tier, which is from er Valdez, Dylan Cees,
- 17:43Speaker 1: Tatsua Ami and Ranger Suarez. Those are the top four.
- 17:47Speaker 1: So we'll see how this goes. We'll see if anyone
- 17:49Speaker 1: takes the qualifying offer tomorrow, or we'll see if that
- 17:52Speaker 1: head of Baseball Operations who told me no one's taken it.
- 17:56Speaker 1: No one wants to be a free agent next offseason,
- 17:59Speaker 1: we'll see if he's proven correct. Could possibly be correct,
- 18:02Speaker 1: but I do expect maybe one or two of these
- 18:04Speaker 1: players to accept the qualifyal offer again. We will see.
- 18:09Speaker 1: All right. That is it for the inside dish, grilling

- 19:05Speaker 1: Time out for Grill and Ken. The part of the
- 19:07Speaker 1: show where I answer your questions. Let's get right to
- 19:10Speaker 1: them and get to as many as we can. First
- 19:11Speaker 1: week question comes from Tyler Max Smith, who asks, who
- 19:16Speaker 1: if the Braves failed to sign hot showing Kim, what
- 19:19Speaker 1: are some other options at shortstop? Good question, Tyler, and
- 19:23Speaker 1: the answer is there aren't many, and they might have
- 19:26Speaker 1: to be creative and make a trade because free agent wise,
- 19:30Speaker 1: there really aren't any shortstops out there. Bobashett, yes, but
- 19:34Speaker 1: teams for the most part do not consider him a shortstop.
- 19:37Speaker 1: And I don't believe that the Atlanta Braves are going
- 19:39Speaker 1: to pay Bobashett what he is going to command in
- 19:43Speaker 1: the open market. So they could do a couple of things.
- 19:46Speaker 1: They could bring back Nick Allen. They can maybe make
- 19:48Speaker 1: a trade, figure out something else. But I don't necessarily
- 19:51Speaker 1: see a great alternative besides Kim, which of course puts
- 19:56Speaker 1: Kim in a great position with the Atlanta Braves and
- 19:59Speaker 1: in general in the open market, because the supply of
- 20:02Speaker 1: shortstops is so short. All right. Next question, this one
- 20:06Speaker 1: comes from doctor Utu, who says, what are the chances
- 20:11Speaker 1: Marte gets traded? I assume he's talking about Katel Marte
- 20:14Speaker 1: and not Starling Marte, because katel Marte is a name
- 20:18Speaker 1: that is out there and you might say, whoa why
- 20:21Speaker 1: would the Diamondbacks want to trade katel Marte. He's one
- 20:24Speaker 1: of the best second basemen in the game, if not
- 20:27Speaker 1: the best. He is under a contract that extends for
- 20:30Speaker 1: a while but pays him at a relatively reasonable rate.
- 20:34Speaker 1: What are they thinking? What they're thinking is that they
- 20:37Speaker 1: have a lot of holes. If you recall, Corvin Burns
- 20:40Speaker 1: underwent Tommy John surgery last year, so did a j
- 20:43Speaker 1: Puck and relief, so did Justin Martinez. I will, said
- 20:46Speaker 1: Nick Martinez. So that's three important pictures that they're down
- 20:51Speaker 1: just by injury alone. And of course Merrill Kelly and
- 20:54Speaker 1: Zach Allen, two of their starters, are also in free
- 20:57Speaker 1: agency and not expected to resign with Arizona. So in
- 21:02Speaker 1: that case, they have a lot of needs. They also
- 21:04Speaker 1: have some needs in the outfield, and that is why
- 21:08Speaker 1: they see Marte potentially if they get the right offer,
- 21:11Speaker 1: filling some of those needs and allowing them to do
- 21:13Speaker 1: some other things. So what are the chances he gets traded?
- 21:17Speaker 1: My guess would be fifty to fifty. I'm sure the
- 21:19Speaker 1: Diamondbacks would want a lot Forktel Marte and it will
- 21:23Speaker 1: be interesting to see whether some team is willing to
- 21:26Speaker 1: meet their demands for him or their desires. I don't
- 21:28Speaker 1: want to say demands because teams hate that word their
- 21:32Speaker 1: desires for kateel Marte. So we'll see how that goes.
- 21:35Speaker 1: But I would not be surprised to see him moved
- 21:37Speaker 1: one bit. Next question, this one comes from Video Game
- 21:42Speaker 1: Nation twenty six, that could be any child in America. Ken,
- 21:45Speaker 1: who do you think is a better option for the
- 21:47Speaker 1: Red Sox for a number two started Joe Ryan or
- 21:50Speaker 1: signing someone like from Er Valdez. First off, we're not
- 21:54Speaker 1: even sure Joe Ryan is going to be traded, And
- 21:57Speaker 1: it just seems to me, after making the Crochet deal
- 22:00Speaker 1: last year and trading four good prospects, really good prospects,
- 22:03Speaker 1: some of whom have already surfaced in the majors, that
- 22:07Speaker 1: the Red Sox preference would be to sign a free agent,
- 22:09Speaker 1: whether it's Valdez, whether it's Cease, whether it's in my
- 22:13Speaker 1: Ranger Suarez, whoever that might be. It just would seem
- 22:16Speaker 1: that that would be the way to go. Now, if
- 22:20Speaker 1: you can make a deal that you like for Joe
- 22:21Speaker 1: Ryan for two years, you do have a strong form
- 22:23Speaker 1: system or some other starter in that category. Sure, maybe
- 22:27Speaker 1: that's the better alternative if the prices for the starters
- 22:30Speaker 1: get I don't know, into a level where the Red
- 22:33Speaker 1: Sox are not comfortable, but my goodness, after trading Raphael
- 22:38Speaker 1: Devers and purging the three hundred and thirty million remaining
- 22:40Speaker 1: on his deal, the Red Sox should be comfortable signing
- 22:43Speaker 1: a big free agent. All right, next question, Let's see
- 22:46Speaker 1: what this one brings us from Jim. Jim Horta, who's
- 22:50Speaker 1: a relief picture that the Dodgers can be eyeing on
- 22:53Speaker 1: the trade market. From what you hear o the trade market,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I've been focusing mostly on free agents with regard to
- 23:01Speaker 1: trades and relief pitching. You know what, Jim, I'm not
- 23:05Speaker 1: going to answer that because I'm not sure of the answer,
- 23:07Speaker 1: and I hate to answer questions what I don't know.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Sometimes it's better just to say I don't know. We
- 23:14Speaker 1: do know that they've been linked to some free agents,
- 23:16Speaker 1: Devin Williams being one. I would think they're an outside
- 23:20Speaker 1: contender for Edwin Diaz, but really only if his market
- 23:22Speaker 1: falls apart, and maybe some of these other relievers who
- 23:25Speaker 1: were out there as well. Ryan Hillsley would be another possibility.
- 23:29Speaker 1: So I see them being more active in free agency.
- 23:32Speaker 1: But there is a possibility of a trade too. We
- 23:35Speaker 1: mentioned earlier in the show Matt stromp a guy that
- 23:37Speaker 1: the Phillies are at least listening on. That would be
- 23:40Speaker 1: one possibility. And I'm sure there are others. Relievers come
- 23:44Speaker 1: and go, and there are also quite a few others
- 23:46Speaker 1: who will be coming onto the free agent market this
- 23:49Speaker 1: week when the non tender deadline hits. That's Thursday, So
- 23:54Speaker 1: the Dodgers will play all their options out and just
- 23:56Speaker 1: see what it brings them. All Right, we have Banana,
- 24:01Speaker 1: the bad Guy, Williams forty eight to sixty. I love
- 24:03Speaker 1: these names. Who is the surprise team that you see
- 24:06Speaker 1: for Kyle Tucker? Great question, and I'll give you one,
- 24:11Speaker 1: and it came up. Will Salmon of The Athletic wrote
- 24:13Speaker 1: about it, as did Patrick Mooney. They wrote a combined
- 24:16Speaker 1: story about Kyle Tucker and they listed this surprise team
- 24:21Speaker 1: the Baltimore Orioles. Now, I do not expect the Oriols
- 24:25Speaker 1: to sign Kyle Tucker, let me say that right off
- 24:27Speaker 1: the top. But while their bigger needs are starting pitching
- 24:32Speaker 1: a top of the rotation starter number three at least,
- 24:35Speaker 1: and a bullpen that they need to address and have
- 24:37Speaker 1: started to address with the signing of Andrew Kittridge. Tucker
- 24:41Speaker 1: would fit as he would fit for any team, and
- 24:43Speaker 1: not only that. Michae Elias when he was with the
- 24:47Speaker 1: Houston Astros, and of course he's now the president of
- 24:50Speaker 1: baseball Operations with the Oriols, Michae Elias drafted Kyle Tucker,
- 24:54Speaker 1: and people in baseball are often attached to people that
- 24:58Speaker 1: they draft. They kind of never lose that affection and
- 25:01Speaker 1: feel for them. And for that reason, I can at
- 25:04Speaker 1: least see their interest. I can also see them spending
- 25:07Speaker 1: more money than they did even last off season. So
- 25:11Speaker 1: I'm not saying the Oils are going to be in
- 25:13Speaker 1: there deep for Kyle Tucker. I don't know that they will.
- 25:15Speaker 1: They have these other priorities, but could they be a
- 25:18Speaker 1: team that surfaces. Yeah. Remember last off season they offered
- 25:23Speaker 1: KERB Corbyn Burns one hundred and eighty million for four years.
- 25:27Speaker 1: That was a serious offer. Now Kyle Tucker is going
- 25:29Speaker 1: to be twice that most likely. I don't know if
- 25:32Speaker 1: they want to go there, but it's something that I
- 25:35Speaker 1: think we will see them linked to in the coming weeks.
- 25:38Speaker 1: All right, well, thank everyone for watching, for listening. Foul
- 25:41Speaker 1: Territories coming up. Jim Bowden, Lance Lynn and Marcus Thames
- 25:45Speaker 1: join Alana, AJ and Krats. That's a lot of Rizzo.
- 25:49Speaker 1: AJ presents the and Aer Krats. Fair Territory returns Thursday,
- 25:53Speaker 1: our usual twelve thirty EASTERNS time slot. Alto Rizzo is
- 25:57Speaker 1: back with us. We'll talk to you then. Have a
- 25:59Speaker 1: great week. Everyone has been fast. Estaishmst
