- 0:00Speaker 1: Good morning, and welcome back to strategize, adapt and overcome.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I am brad young and I'm genuinely glad you are
- 0:06Speaker 1: here with me today. Let me start with a question,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and I want you to be honest with yourself, because
- 0:12Speaker 1: nobody hears your answer but you. How many times have
- 0:15Speaker 1: you walked into a situation, a job, a deal, a relationship,
- 0:18Speaker 1: a big decision without truly understanding what you were walking into.
- 0:22Speaker 1: You had energy, you had ambition, maybe you even had
- 0:25Speaker 1: a plan, but you did not know the ground. And
- 0:28Speaker 1: somewhere down the road that missing piece cost you. If
- 0:31Speaker 1: you can think of a moment like that, and I
- 0:33Speaker 1: believe you can, then this episode is for you. We
- 0:36Speaker 1: have covered serious ground together in this series. We learned
- 0:41Speaker 1: the patience of the warrior who waits for the right
- 0:43Speaker 1: moment we face the enemy hiding inside our own heads.
- 0:47Speaker 1: We learned a bend like water when everything changes. And
- 0:51Speaker 1: last time, we learned the art of the unseen, how
- 0:55Speaker 1: to guard our intentions and let the world underestimate us.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Today we turn our eyes outward. Today we learn to
- 1:02Speaker 1: read the land beneath our feet before we ever take
- 1:05Speaker 1: a single step forward. Sun Sou wrote that the general
- 1:09Speaker 1: who knows the terrain. Who understands the mountains, in the forest,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the swamps and the narrow passes will win his battles.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And the one who marches without knowing the ground will
- 1:18Speaker 1: fall into every trap the land has waiting for him.
- 1:20Speaker 1: He said, know the ground, know the weather, and your
- 1:22Speaker 1: victory will be complete. So let us get into it.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Here's the first truth I need you to sit with today.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Most people lose not because they are weak, and not
- 1:33Speaker 1: because they lack talent. They lose because they fight on
- 1:36Speaker 1: ground they never bother to understand. They pour their whole
- 1:41Speaker 1: heart into a battle, without ever asking one simple question,
- 1:44Speaker 1: what does this terrain actually reward and what does it punish?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Think about a farmer. A wise farmer does not plant
- 1:51Speaker 1: the same crop in every field. He reads the soil,
- 1:55Speaker 1: He studies the sun and the shade. He knows which
- 1:58Speaker 1: corner floods when the rains come and which patch stays
- 2:01Speaker 1: dry in a drought. He does not fight the land.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He listens to it, and then he plants what the
- 2:06Speaker 1: land is ready to grow. The foolish farmer plants whatever
- 2:09Speaker 1: he wants, wherever he wants, and then blames the sky
- 2:12Speaker 1: when nothing rises from the dirt. Which farmer are you?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Are you reading the soil before you plant, or are
- 2:18Speaker 1: you throwing your seeds anywhere and wondering why so little grows.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Let me bring this out of the field and into
- 2:25Speaker 1: your real life, because this is where it matters. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: want to tell you a story. I am going to
- 2:30Speaker 1: change some of the details to protect the people in it.
- 2:33Speaker 1: But this happened, and it taught me a lesson I
- 2:35Speaker 1: have carried ever since. Years ago. I watched two people
- 2:39Speaker 1: step into the very same industry at the very same time,
- 2:43Speaker 1: same opportunity, same starting line. We will call the first
- 2:47Speaker 1: one the charger, because that is exactly what he did.
- 2:50Speaker 1: He charged. He was talented, he was hungry, and he
- 2:54Speaker 1: was absolutely convinced that effort alone would carry him through.
- 2:59Speaker 1: He did not study of the market he was entering.
- 3:01Speaker 1: He did not learn who the players were, where the
- 3:03Speaker 1: money actually moved, or which doors were already closed before
- 3:07Speaker 1: he ever knocked. He just put his head down and
- 3:10Speaker 1: pushed with everything he had, and for a while his
- 3:13Speaker 1: energy looked like it might be enough. But slowly the
- 3:16Speaker 1: ground he ignored started to swallow him. He kept running
- 3:20Speaker 1: into obstacles he could have seen coming if only he
- 3:22Speaker 1: had looked. He kept fighting for territory that was never
- 3:27Speaker 1: going to be his, while the real opportunity sat quietly
- 3:30Speaker 1: in a corner. He never bothered to explore. He was strong,
- 3:35Speaker 1: he was willing, and he was losing because he was
- 3:38Speaker 1: fighting blind. Now let me tell you about the second one.
- 3:42Speaker 1: We will call her the scout. And the scout did
- 3:45Speaker 1: something the charger never did. Before she moved. She watched,
- 3:50Speaker 1: She studied the land. She spent time understanding where the
- 3:53Speaker 1: pressure was, where the openings were, who held the power,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and who only pretended to. She asked questions. She listened
- 4:01Speaker 1: far more than she spoke. She was not slower because
- 4:05Speaker 1: she was scared. She was slower because she was gathering
- 4:08Speaker 1: the one thing that wins wars before they start, and
- 4:11Speaker 1: that thing is knowledge. And when she finally moved, she
- 4:14Speaker 1: moved into space that was actually open. She planted in
- 4:18Speaker 1: soil that was actually ready. She avoided the traps that
- 4:21Speaker 1: the charger walked into with his eyes wide shut. Same industry,
- 4:25Speaker 1: same starting line. One studied the ground and one ignored it.
- 4:30Speaker 1: One built something that lasted, and one burned out swinging
- 4:33Speaker 1: its shadows. So ask yourself, honestly, which one are you
- 4:37Speaker 1: right now, the charger all energy and no map, or
- 4:43Speaker 1: the scout patient enough to understand the land before you
- 4:46Speaker 1: commit your strength to it. Now, I want to break
- 4:50Speaker 1: this down into something you can actually use. Because reading
- 4:54Speaker 1: your terrain is a skill, and every skill can be learned.
- 4:59Speaker 1: The first thing you us learn to read is your
- 5:01Speaker 1: own ground, and this is the one people's skip because
- 5:04Speaker 1: it is the hardest to look at honestly. Before you
- 5:07Speaker 1: study the world out there, you have to study the
- 5:10Speaker 1: land you are standing on. What are your real strengths,
- 5:13Speaker 1: not the ones you wish you had, the real ones.
- 5:16Speaker 1: What are your true weaknesses, the ones your ego does
- 5:18Speaker 1: not want you to name. What resources do you actually
- 5:21Speaker 1: have and which ones are you only pretending to have.
- 5:24Speaker 1: The Stoics were relentless about this. They practiced what they
- 5:28Speaker 1: called the honest examination of the self. The philosopher Epictetis
- 5:33Speaker 1: taught that we must first know what is truly within
- 5:36Speaker 1: our power and what is not. Because when you fight
- 5:39Speaker 1: a battle believing you have strengths you do not have,
- 5:44Speaker 1: you are marching an army across a bridge that will
- 5:46Speaker 1: not hold your weight. And when you overlook the strengths
- 5:49Speaker 1: you do have, you leave your best weapons sitting in
- 5:53Speaker 1: the tent while you struggle with your bare hands. Know
- 5:56Speaker 1: your own ground. First, stand on the honest truth of
- 5:59Speaker 1: who you are are, what you carry, and what you lack,
- 6:04Speaker 1: because everything else you read out in the world means
- 6:07Speaker 1: nothing if you are lying to yourself about the person
- 6:10Speaker 1: reading it. The second thing you must learn to read
- 6:12Speaker 1: is the ground around you. This is the terrain of
- 6:15Speaker 1: your situation, your market, your workplace, your relationships, the environment
- 6:20Speaker 1: you're about to step into. And here is the discipline
- 6:23Speaker 1: most people never build. You have to look at it
- 6:26Speaker 1: with honest eyes, not hopeful ones. There is a massive
- 6:30Speaker 1: difference between seeing the world as it is and seeing
- 6:33Speaker 1: the world as you wish it were. Hope is a
- 6:35Speaker 1: beautiful thing, but hope is a terrible strategy when it
- 6:39Speaker 1: blinds you to what is actually in front of you.
- 6:41Speaker 1: The wise strategist looks at the terrain and asks hard questions.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Where is the power in this room and who actually
- 6:47Speaker 1: holds it? Where are the openings that nobody else seems
- 6:50Speaker 1: to notice. Where are the traps that look like opportunities,
- 6:53Speaker 1: the shiny corners that have swallowed everyone who walked into
- 6:56Speaker 1: them before me? Sun Sux warned about ground that looks
- 6:59Speaker 1: in vita but leads to ruin. He talked about narrow
- 7:02Speaker 1: passes and steep places, about terrain that traps an army
- 7:05Speaker 1: the moment it commits and your life is full of
- 7:08Speaker 1: the same thing. The job that looks perfect on the
- 7:11Speaker 1: surface but quietly destroys everyone who takes it. The deal
- 7:15Speaker 1: that glitters until you read what is underneath, that relationship
- 7:18Speaker 1: that promises everything and delivers a cage. The opportunities that
- 7:22Speaker 1: hurt you most are rarely the ugly ones. They are
- 7:25Speaker 1: the beautiful ones that you never studied closely enough to
- 7:28Speaker 1: see the trap inside. So slow down, look with honest eyes,
- 7:33Speaker 1: read the ground before you plant your feet on it. Now,
- 7:36Speaker 1: let me talk about the hidden opportunities, because this is
- 7:39Speaker 1: the reward that makes all this discipline worth it. Here's
- 7:42Speaker 1: something I've learned. When most people rush into a situation,
- 7:46Speaker 1: they only see the obvious paths. They see the door
- 7:49Speaker 1: everyone is already crowded into. They fight over the same
- 7:52Speaker 1: small piece of ground that every other person is fighting
- 7:55Speaker 1: over because it is the piece everyone can see. But
- 7:58Speaker 1: the person who studies the twin, who really reads it,
- 8:01Speaker 1: starts to notice the openings that the crowd walks right past.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Think about water again, since we spent a whole episode
- 8:08Speaker 1: on it. Water finds the low path, the crack, the
- 8:11Speaker 1: opening that the raging crowd never notices because they're too
- 8:15Speaker 1: busy throwing themselves at the wall. The strategist who knows
- 8:19Speaker 1: the ground is the same way. While everyone else is
- 8:22Speaker 1: fighting for the crowded door, you were quietly noticing the
- 8:25Speaker 1: open window nobody else looked at. That is not luck.
- 8:29Speaker 1: That is the reward of reading your terrain when everyone
- 8:31Speaker 1: else was too impatient to bother. And let me connect
- 8:34Speaker 1: this back to the story. I told you the reason
- 8:36Speaker 1: the scout found space to grow was not because she
- 8:38Speaker 1: was smarter than everyone else. It was because she looked.
- 8:42Speaker 1: She saw the opportunities hiding in plain sight, the ones
- 8:45Speaker 1: the charger ran right past and his rushed to push forward.
- 8:48Speaker 1: The hidden opportunities are almost always there. The question is
- 8:52Speaker 1: whether you have the discipline to slow down and see them.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So let me give you something practical to carry out
- 8:58Speaker 1: of here today, because I know ever want to just
- 9:01Speaker 1: fill your head with ideas and send you off with
- 9:03Speaker 1: nothing to actually do with them. Here's your framework for
- 9:07Speaker 1: this week. Three moves. Run them on any situation you
- 9:10Speaker 1: are about to step into and watch how much clear
- 9:13Speaker 1: the ground becomes. The first move is to map your
- 9:16Speaker 1: own land before you do anything else. Get brutally honest
- 9:19Speaker 1: about yourself in this specific situation. Write down your real
- 9:23Speaker 1: strengths that apply here. Write down your true weaknesses. Write
- 9:27Speaker 1: down what resources you actually have to work with, not
- 9:29Speaker 1: what you wish you had. What you have. This is
- 9:33Speaker 1: your foundation, and a clear foundation changes everything that comes
- 9:36Speaker 1: after it. The second move is to study the terrain
- 9:39Speaker 1: with honest eyes. Look at the situation in front of
- 9:42Speaker 1: you and ask the hard questions. Where is the real
- 9:45Speaker 1: power here? Where are the openings that others are missing?
- 9:48Speaker 1: And where are the traps dressed up as opportunities? Write
- 9:53Speaker 1: down what you see, not what you hope to see.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Force yourself to look at the ground the way it
- 9:58Speaker 1: actually is. The third move is to find the open window.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Once you have mapped yourself and studied the terrain, ask
- 10:05Speaker 1: one final question. Where is the path that everyone else
- 10:09Speaker 1: is ignoring while the crowd fights over the obvious door.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Where is the opening that fits your specific strengths and
- 10:15Speaker 1: avoids the traps you now see clearly? Find that path
- 10:20Speaker 1: and take one step toward it this week, just one
- 10:23Speaker 1: step made with open eyes instead of blind hope. Map
- 10:27Speaker 1: your own land, study the terrain with honest eyes, find
- 10:31Speaker 1: the open window. That is how you stop fighting blind
- 10:35Speaker 1: and start choosing battles you have already halfway one. Now.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I want to say something important before we close, because
- 10:43Speaker 1: I never want this to be twisted into something it
- 10:45Speaker 1: is not. Reading your ground is not about becoming cold,
- 10:49Speaker 1: or calculating, or so cautious that you never move. That
- 10:53Speaker 1: is not the point. The point is to bring wisdom
- 10:56Speaker 1: to your courage. You will still need to charge, You
- 10:59Speaker 1: will still need to fight, but when you do, you
- 11:02Speaker 1: will be charging across grounds you understand and openings you
- 11:06Speaker 1: have actually seen, avoiding traps that would have swallowed a
- 11:10Speaker 1: person moving blind. The stoics never taught us to stop acting.
- 11:15Speaker 1: They taught us to act with clear eyes in a
- 11:17Speaker 1: steady mind. Knowledge does not replace courage. Knowledge gives your
- 11:21Speaker 1: courage somewhere worth going. Let me leave you with this
- 11:25Speaker 1: before we go. The land beneath your feet is always speaking.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Your situation is always telling you the truth about itself.
- 11:33Speaker 1: If you are humble enough to listen and patient enough
- 11:35Speaker 1: to look, most people never hear it because they are
- 11:39Speaker 1: too busy charging, too proud to study, to impatient to
- 11:42Speaker 1: scout the ground before they commit their whole heart to it,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and so they fall into the same traps over and
- 11:49Speaker 1: over and blame the sky for a harvest that never came.
- 11:53Speaker 1: You do not have to be one of those people anymore.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Starting today, you become the scout. You become the wise
- 12:00Speaker 1: farmer who reads the soil. You become the strategist who
- 12:04Speaker 1: knows the mountains and the passes, the openings and the
- 12:07Speaker 1: traps before the fight ever begins. And when you know
- 12:10Speaker 1: your ground that well, you stop losing battles you never
- 12:14Speaker 1: should have entered, and you start winning the ones that
- 12:17Speaker 1: were quietly waiting for you all along. So this week,
- 12:20Speaker 1: before you charge, look before you plant, read the soil,
- 12:25Speaker 1: before you commit your strength, understand the land, because the
- 12:29Speaker 1: warrior who knows the terrain has already won half the
- 12:32Speaker 1: battle before the first move is ever made. Thank you
- 12:36Speaker 1: so much for spending this time with me today. If
- 12:39Speaker 1: this episode gave you something to think about, do me
- 12:41Speaker 1: a favor and share it with someone who has been
- 12:44Speaker 1: charging blind lately, someone who needs to hear that looking
- 12:48Speaker 1: before you leap is not weakness, it is wisdom. And
- 12:51Speaker 1: make sure you follow the show because you are not
- 12:54Speaker 1: going to want to miss what comes next. In our
- 12:56Speaker 1: next episode, we go from knowing your ground to knowing
- 12:59Speaker 1: your peace. We're going to talk about the power of
- 13:02Speaker 1: alliances and why no warrior ever truly wins alone. The
- 13:06Speaker 1: old myth tells us the strong stand by themselves, but
- 13:09Speaker 1: soun sou knew the deeper truth that real strength comes
- 13:12Speaker 1: from the people you gather around you. I am going
- 13:15Speaker 1: to show you how to build genuine alliances rooted in trust,
- 13:18Speaker 1: how to choose the right people for your corner, and
- 13:21Speaker 1: how to become the kind of ally that others fight
- 13:24Speaker 1: to keep, because when the storm finally hits, it is
- 13:27Speaker 1: never the loner who survives. It is the one surrounded
- 13:31Speaker 1: by people who show up. Until then, know your ground,
- 13:35Speaker 1: read the land with honest eyes, and keep moving forward.
