Transcript
- 0:07All right, we'll start with an opening
- 0:08statement from Coach Beard, then we'll
- 0:09take questions for Pat.
- 0:12>> Yeah, obviously a good win for us in a
- 0:14year filled with a lot of adversity. Um,
- 0:17not not too many high points the last
- 0:19couple months. Just uh proud of our
- 0:21guys. Um, a lot of respect for the
- 0:24Auburn program. So, uh, to beat a team
- 0:27like this this time of year, I think
- 0:28speaks really highly of our players, um,
- 0:31in a season where it would almost be
- 0:34understandable if guys kind of checked
- 0:36it in. We just haven't done that. Uh,
- 0:38we've been in a lot of games just like
- 0:39you guys saw tonight. Uh, tonight we
- 0:42just came out on top. So, I've always
- 0:44thought in this league, uh, you got to
- 0:46get three or four guys in double figure
- 0:47scoring. Um, we get three there tonight,
- 0:50but we get a careerhigh from Patton and
- 0:52AJ scored the ball at a high rate. So,
- 0:54um, really thought we won the game with
- 0:56our defense, um, in moments, um, but
- 1:00really the offense is what carried us
- 1:01tonight. You know, to shoot that kind of
- 1:03percentage and have a low turnover game,
- 1:05uh, was really the only recipe that we
- 1:07had to be fortunate and, uh, really
- 1:08proud of our guys pulling off. Any
- 1:10questions for Patton?
- 1:17>> Patton, what what was it about the way
- 1:20you guys were able to get off to such a
- 1:21hot start through, you know, from deep?
- 1:23I know that's been, you know, kind of a
- 1:25struggle for y'all the last few games.
- 1:26What was kind of the difference tonight?
- 1:27>> Um, just coming out, you know, playing
- 1:29aggressive. Um,
- 1:31we execute the game plan. Just we just
- 1:33hooping on offense. Um, moving the ball,
- 1:35cutting. Um, and that let us, uh, get
- 1:37hot on offense.
- 1:41>> Any questions for Pat? Easy night,
- 1:44young.
- 1:52>> Questions for coach?
- 1:58>> Just going off what I was asking Patton,
- 2:00just you guys have the three-point
- 2:01shooting, being able to be so hot so
- 2:03early, kind of what what was the key to
- 2:04that? I know Auburn's definitely
- 2:06struggled in defending through hand. Is
- 2:07there anything y'all saw?
- 2:08>> Yeah, I think at times tonight we had
- 2:10really good ball movement. uh the ball
- 2:12wasn't sticking much on our end. Um and
- 2:15so that's always a good thing for us. I
- 2:18think we were able to get threes in a
- 2:19variety of ways. Got a couple in
- 2:20transition, got a couple late shot clock
- 2:23and just got a couple through dribble
- 2:24penetration. So, um obviously the game
- 2:27is a lot easier when you make shots. Um
- 2:29the percentages we shot tonight, you
- 2:30know, give us a chance to win.
- 2:36>> Seemed like it was a physical game out
- 2:37there tonight, coach. You guys really
- 2:39played through it. Can you talk about,
- 2:40you know, what you told them kind of
- 2:42going into the half? You guys take a
- 2:43one-point lead and then are able to
- 2:45sustain in the second half.
- 2:46>> Yeah, our motto tonight was just to
- 2:48compete. Um, this time of year, we
- 2:50understood what Auburn was playing for
- 2:52tonight. Um, but we have great purpose
- 2:54in our locker room right now as well.
- 2:56Uh, we're going to keep playing this
- 2:57season till they tell us we can't play
- 2:58anymore. Um, so the message at halftime
- 3:01was we turned it into a 20-minute game.
- 3:03Um, I thought above all tonight, we just
- 3:06played as a team and we competed. There
- 3:07was kind of a belief. um the exact kind
- 3:10of story that you guys saw unravel
- 3:12tonight. We've been in many games just
- 3:13like this, just haven't been able to
- 3:15finish. Uh but I thought tonight we got
- 3:17some timely rim protection. Uh James
- 3:20blocked four shots tonight. That's
- 3:21something we really been missing. Um so
- 3:23a lot of those possessions, I thought
- 3:25Auburn executed and got exactly what
- 3:26they wanted and then James just made a
- 3:28play. Uh in college basketball,
- 3:30especially when March arrives, you know,
- 3:33it's about players making plays. We had
- 3:35really good contribution from Corin
- 3:36Johnson tonight. Uh Ilas got a little
- 3:38foul trouble. K played some real
- 3:40meaningful uh minutes late. Um just had
- 3:44good contributions from most of the guys
- 3:45on our roster tonight. It's a good team
- 3:47win for Miss.
- 3:50>> What does a win like this mean with the
- 3:53SEC tournament approach and obviously
- 3:55anything can happen but you know are you
- 3:57sending a message to your guys that hey
- 3:59let's go to Nashville and make a run?
- 4:01>> Yeah, we haven't started talking
- 4:02specifically about that yet. We're just
- 4:04we're literally a program right now and
- 4:05a team right now that's just trying to
- 4:08stack good days and um we've had a lot
- 4:10of you know pretty good games the last
- 4:13month or so. We just didn't come up on
- 4:14top playing some of the best teams in
- 4:16the country. So I think above all I
- 4:18think it's obvious for everybody that
- 4:19was at this game tonight. Our guys
- 4:21haven't quit. uh we continue to try to
- 4:23give ourselves a chance and so two more
- 4:25opportunities in the regular season and
- 4:27then we'll be playing in a tournament in
- 4:29Nashville that gives an automatic bid to
- 4:31the NCA tournament and so that'll be our
- 4:33objective.
- 4:36>> Coach, how big were those challenges
- 4:38getting overturned at the end of that
- 4:40game?
- 4:41Yeah, we got a couple guys behind that
- 4:43bench um that do not get paid a lot of
- 4:46money. Um but they do have a high
- 4:48pressure job to make a quick decision
- 4:51and so I thought our guys tonight behind
- 4:53the bench did a really good job. Um you
- 4:55know, obviously picking a couple
- 4:56challenges that we thought would go our
- 4:58way.
- 5:01>> Coach, what did you see for tonight from
- 5:03Steven Pearl, young coach in this
- 5:05league, taking over, you know, a
- 5:06tournament team last year? uh you know
- 5:09it seemed like he had a decent plan for
- 5:10you tonight. You guys were prepared for
- 5:12it, but can you comment on Stephen in
- 5:14his first year?
- 5:15>> Yeah, I'm on the record and I'll say it
- 5:16again. I think Stephen is doing a really
- 5:18good job. I understand that ultimately
- 5:21uh the win loss record is where most
- 5:22people go first, but you know, you're
- 5:24talking about getting a job late into
- 5:26the spring or was it even early summer,
- 5:28fall? Um I think he's doing a good job.
- 5:31They're more than competitive in this
- 5:33league. Got some great wins on their
- 5:36resume. Um, you know, I think, uh, I got
- 5:39a lot of respect for Stephen and I think
- 5:41he's doing a good job here. And if I
- 5:43didn't feel that way, I wouldn't say it.
- 5:46>> Thanks everybody.
