Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Scottie Mac from Unwritten Law.
- 0:02Speaker 2: We're gone up to come and tour for Hotter than
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hell and uh yeah we're looking forward to it.
- 0:06Speaker 1: October.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Beautiful Scotty, thanks for joining us, Bray, thank you way so.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Unwritten Law return to Australia this October and November. We're
- 0:15Speaker 3: running show starting in Perth on October eleventh, before going
- 0:18Speaker 3: through Victoria, South Australia and Queensland, finishing up a Nudgey
- 0:22Speaker 3: Beach hotel on November the third. Like I know, you
- 0:25Speaker 3: living and made, so it's not much of a spread
- 0:28Speaker 3: stretch for you. But the other boys are packed and ready.
- 0:30Speaker 2: To be ready to come over just about I've been
- 0:32Speaker 2: telling them to start packing and limit their supplies. This
- 0:35Speaker 2: is the shortest tour we've done in like I think
- 0:37Speaker 2: ten years. Usually we do a month here. This is
- 0:39Speaker 2: the quickest little thing we're doing a long time now.
- 0:42Speaker 3: The boys pretty much got go bang set up at
- 0:44Speaker 3: your place when they come over, so.
- 0:45Speaker 1: They have to drin much pretty much.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I definitely we leave a lot of things in each
- 0:49Speaker 2: other's countries, that's for sure.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Save on that baggage right now, Are you going.
- 0:55Speaker 3: To be doing your own side shows? Plus the runners
- 0:57Speaker 3: part of Hotter than Hell. So we'll start on Hotter
- 0:59Speaker 3: than Hell. Liked going to be huge with yourselves. There's Regurgitator, Lessen, Jake, Jevidi,
- 1:05Speaker 3: the Bennies and more like. It's almost got like a
- 1:07Speaker 3: walk to a kind of field of it, isn't it?
- 1:09Speaker 1: It does? It does?
- 1:10Speaker 2: I mean I was looking up all tour postas from
- 1:13Speaker 2: like the nineties and it's the same bands for the
- 1:15Speaker 2: most part.
- 1:16Speaker 1: It does have a little old feel to it.
- 1:18Speaker 4: My friends are wrong, that's the only thing. Missen.
- 1:20Speaker 1: No.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We did Hotter than That with him last time though,
- 1:22Speaker 2: so we ticked that box.
- 1:26Speaker 3: If you guys played with all they bands on there before,
- 1:28Speaker 3: like I know, you spent a bit of.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Time, I think, so I'm pretty sure looking back, I mean,
- 1:33Speaker 2: Regurgitator is one that might have been missed.
- 1:35Speaker 1: To be honest, they've had some breaks that we've not
- 1:37Speaker 1: been around for us, so I.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Think everybody else, I know Jebediah going way back, there
- 1:41Speaker 2: were on all the same festivals and I think there'll
- 1:44Speaker 2: be a few familiar faces.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, oh, are you guys say he's not any strangers
- 1:49Speaker 3: to tour in Australia. You've been here to repair bit.
- 1:51Speaker 3: But but people that might not have seen you before.
- 1:53Speaker 3: What can fans expect from an unwritten all live show.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Well, this time we are for the festivals, especially doing
- 2:00Speaker 2: the Black Album. That was what we're doing part of
- 2:03Speaker 2: the thing, a couple of the side shows. We might
- 2:05Speaker 2: we we don't know if we're going to do it
- 2:07Speaker 2: the whole time yet. It depends how people want to
- 2:09Speaker 2: hear it, I guess, but it seems to be at
- 2:11Speaker 2: the moment that people want to hear a bit of
- 2:13Speaker 2: Black albumit of Elva, we're kind of focusing on what
- 2:15Speaker 2: people want to hear. Last time we were here for
- 2:17Speaker 2: the record, so we kind of played a lot of
- 2:18Speaker 2: new songs and we'll probably do a couple of this time.
- 2:20Speaker 1: But we're really trying to help promote and.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Do those era albums because they're all turning twenty and
- 2:26Speaker 2: thirty years old.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Now, Oh, done it a little bit?
- 2:29Speaker 3: A little bit now, you mentioned you're going to be
- 2:32Speaker 3: playing the Black Album in full, So I've done it
- 2:36Speaker 3: before a few times.
- 2:36Speaker 4: But when you first start, like, is it a hard
- 2:38Speaker 4: thing to do to learn an album front to back?
- 2:40Speaker 3: Like when you made it, you wouldn't have actually thought
- 2:42Speaker 3: that one day you'd have to play the whole thing.
- 2:46Speaker 2: That's true. That's true for sure. I mean it's a
- 2:49Speaker 2: funny one for me specifically because I grew up listening
- 2:51Speaker 2: to that album before I joined the band, and so
- 2:54Speaker 2: for me, it was like something I used to sit
- 2:56Speaker 2: and do regularly was play that album straight.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Through on guitar.
- 2:58Speaker 2: But I know the guys I've never done that in
- 3:01Speaker 2: their life before, and so when we started doing it, it
- 3:03Speaker 2: was kind of like, well, and some of the songs
- 3:04Speaker 2: had never been played before even you know, like outside
- 3:07Speaker 2: of a studio.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that album. So that's twenty six this year.
- 3:12Speaker 1: That album, I think so still like it like this.
- 3:16Speaker 3: You know, everything goes older, you know, the longer you
- 3:19Speaker 3: away from it, but that album seems to be going
- 3:21Speaker 3: strength to strength, and people keep falling in love with
- 3:23Speaker 3: new parts of it all the.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Time, I think.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I mean, especially that band with that album. You know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: they were one of the first American bands like that
- 3:31Speaker 2: to come down. You know, it was Pennywise blinking them,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and so people's eyes were on them and even me.
- 3:36Speaker 2: You know, that album it's just the start of it.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It turns into this listening experience, you know, and there's
- 3:42Speaker 2: so many tracks on there that are so memorable that
- 3:44Speaker 2: I think the guys really enjoyed playing it through front
- 3:46Speaker 2: of back, something they never thought they would do for sure.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And you guys claimed the Black album before Metallic or
- 3:52Speaker 3: even fucking thought of it.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Hey, I think. I mean it has different ends to
- 3:57Speaker 1: everybody too.
- 3:57Speaker 2: We call it the Black Albums, and people call it
- 3:59Speaker 2: self tired, some people call it whatever they want.
- 4:01Speaker 3: You know, the tickets have been selling that well for
- 4:06Speaker 3: Hot and the Hell, Like I know, the Brisbane shows
- 4:07Speaker 3: had to be moved from the back room and Atlie
- 4:09Speaker 3: to a bigger venue at the nudgeb shchel mate. So
- 4:13Speaker 3: it just shows not only music, but that style of music.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It's still alive and well, isn't it.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It is?
- 4:19Speaker 2: It is And like you know, some of those people
- 4:22Speaker 2: that were listening back then have grown up and had
- 4:24Speaker 2: kids and other kids are into it too, and so
- 4:26Speaker 2: that's really cool, and like it's really nice we get
- 4:29Speaker 2: to play some all ages stuff too because those kids
- 4:30Speaker 2: love coming out and I remember I was a kid
- 4:32Speaker 2: that wasn't allowed into shows for a little while.
- 4:34Speaker 1: There's nothing worse, you know, No.
- 4:36Speaker 3: That's that sort of died off of fair recent years
- 4:39Speaker 3: and the all ages shows. A lot of it's got
- 4:41Speaker 3: to do with liquor licensing laws getting stricter and shits.
- 4:44Speaker 4: There's a lot of factors, but the fact is that
- 4:47Speaker 4: it's been gone for a while and it needs to
- 4:49Speaker 4: come back.
- 4:50Speaker 2: It is, And like every time we announce the tour,
- 4:52Speaker 2: it's the most messages we get is people going, we
- 4:55Speaker 2: can't see you guys, can you please try and add
- 4:57Speaker 2: an all ages show? And yeah, and it is you
- 5:00Speaker 2: Obviously it's expensive or for whatever reason, but it's the
- 5:03Speaker 2: most request we get is to open it up. And
- 5:05Speaker 2: so hopefully I think the festivals this time are I
- 5:07Speaker 2: think check that. But yeah, I mean some of them
- 5:10Speaker 2: can finally come and see the band, you know, and
- 5:13Speaker 2: who knows?
- 5:15Speaker 4: Can I have a be with you and party.
- 5:16Speaker 1: On maybe if they're of age.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Now.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The beauty about first of all, is quite often bands
- 5:23Speaker 3: here that people don't know too well. So just say
- 5:25Speaker 3: someone's coming along to Hotter than Hell that don't know
- 5:27Speaker 3: much about Unwritten Law. What three songs would you tell
- 5:29Speaker 3: them to listen to get engaged in?
- 5:31Speaker 2: What do you expect I mean, especially playing that album
- 5:36Speaker 2: the three for Me, you got to come in with
- 5:38Speaker 2: harmonic because it's just that song changed my life, then
- 5:43Speaker 2: straight into teenage suicide. So bang bang and then jump
- 5:45Speaker 2: to learn some theme and then that's a wrap as
- 5:47Speaker 2: far as I'm concerned.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Wait easily now, aside from Hotter than Hell, you've also
- 5:52Speaker 3: got your own shows in Perth, Adelaide and Queensland and
- 5:57Speaker 3: Sydney and Sydney too and Sydney too, So like you
- 6:00Speaker 3: did sort of touch on this before, But how are
- 6:02Speaker 3: they going to be different to the festival shows You
- 6:04Speaker 3: might not be playing.
- 6:05Speaker 4: The whole album.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Well, I guess like it depends what kind of flak
- 6:08Speaker 2: we get, because originally we thought the festivals were for
- 6:10Speaker 2: their album and we'll do whatever we want the other shows.
- 6:13Speaker 2: But already we're sort of getting people saying, but you're
- 6:16Speaker 2: going to do that at the other show too, right,
- 6:18Speaker 2: So you know we might do one too. I think
- 6:20Speaker 2: we're going to change it up a little bit. We're
- 6:22Speaker 2: not going to do the same thing every night, that's
- 6:23Speaker 2: for sure. I mean, there's a lot of songs to
- 6:25Speaker 2: pick from with this band. It's kind of fun to
- 6:28Speaker 2: change it up. But you know, if people want to
- 6:30Speaker 2: hear it, we'll play it.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Thanks From a personal point of view, bro, and I
- 6:33Speaker 3: hate to ask you to pick sides, but would you
- 6:35Speaker 3: prefer that or at a pub headlining gig.
- 6:39Speaker 4: There's a bit more intimate this.
- 6:41Speaker 2: There's good and bad to both. The festivals are cool
- 6:44Speaker 2: because there's you know, you can kind of just rock up.
- 6:46Speaker 2: There's a lot of things are done for you. You
- 6:49Speaker 2: play the bigger crowds, let's you know, less work going
- 6:52Speaker 2: into it. Whereas the headline shows are cool because you
- 6:55Speaker 2: play for longer.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Usually you get a bit more intimate. You can change
- 6:59Speaker 1: it up a bit.
- 7:00Speaker 2: It like, especially festivals now it is more of a
- 7:02Speaker 2: thing around the world to be playing an album or
- 7:04Speaker 2: a specific thing. Club shows there for anybody, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 2: for us to play whatever too.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But yeah, so pick aside.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Very diplomatic.
- 7:16Speaker 3: We spoke before about the back room and I only
- 7:18Speaker 3: missing out on hot of the hell because it's had
- 7:20Speaker 3: to move to a bigger venue. But the plus side
- 7:22Speaker 3: that is, I see you guys have been announced here
- 7:24Speaker 3: on October seventy eight.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Correct, Yeah, so we're I mean that just happened to
- 7:31Speaker 2: work out in our favor the way we're doing the tour,
- 7:33Speaker 2: and we've done the back room I think the last
- 7:36Speaker 2: two times, you know, and we love it. There and
- 7:38Speaker 2: the Sweet Little Spot, And so when it came up
- 7:40Speaker 2: that we could add that to our own.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Shows, we figured why not. You know, yes, if you.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Got the support bands and stuff lined up.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I'm waiting right now.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I believe Premiere the guys bringing us out. They've been
- 7:52Speaker 2: throwing us all the ideas and we've kind of led
- 7:54Speaker 2: it to them. And there's so many good local bands
- 7:56Speaker 2: choose from these days, it's kind of.
- 7:58Speaker 1: It's a lot to take on.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Bith. Your brother is unwritten Lawa and toured Australia.
- 8:04Speaker 3: We said before so many times pretty much the only
- 8:07Speaker 3: country that you've toured more is the home state of
- 8:09Speaker 3: the US. So what is it about Australia like you Libby?
- 8:12Speaker 3: So that's given, But what is it about Australia that
- 8:14Speaker 3: keeps the rest of them coming back? Because it's a
- 8:16Speaker 3: long fucking way for them.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I mean, I kind of, like I said before, they
- 8:20Speaker 2: were one of the first ones to come out in
- 8:22Speaker 2: that wave, you know, the Taylor Swift, the Tailor Swift,
- 8:25Speaker 2: Tailor Steel Wave.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Uh.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And you know, I actually counted the other day for
- 8:31Speaker 2: another interview that this is their twenty first time as
- 8:34Speaker 2: a band setting foot on the soil, and uh, I
- 8:38Speaker 2: couldn't find another band from that air that has done
- 8:40Speaker 2: that many, to be honest, So there's something.
- 8:43Speaker 1: There's something there.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Before I let you go, brother and started a new
- 8:46Speaker 3: segment where before I spoke to you, I went and
- 8:48Speaker 3: strolled through your Facebook page and I've got a couple
- 8:51Speaker 3: of photos that I want to shame.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Okay, sorry, behind him all right?
- 8:57Speaker 4: This one here? What the hell there? I mean?
- 9:03Speaker 1: These are what these shows in San Diego used to
- 9:05Speaker 1: look like. They were in the hills. They were in
- 9:07Speaker 1: parking lots.
- 9:08Speaker 2: These guys used to carry their gear up into the
- 9:10Speaker 2: mountains and you know, hundreds of kids would walk up
- 9:13Speaker 2: the mountain and play in a parking lot and they
- 9:15Speaker 2: would just play until I got shut down, you know,
- 9:17Speaker 2: like that's that's how this band started. There was Blink
- 9:20Speaker 2: was doing the same thing, you know, playing in back alleys.
- 9:24Speaker 4: That looks like a highway behind you there.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Yeah, the safe is not a word this band understands.
- 9:35Speaker 4: The other one I've dug up is one.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is actually in Hollywood.
- 9:42Speaker 2: There was a garage sale because every few years we
- 9:44Speaker 2: have storage units full of backdrops and old merch and
- 9:48Speaker 2: gear and everything. And once every few years when it's overflowing,
- 9:52Speaker 2: sometimes we open it up and we have a little
- 9:54Speaker 2: side of the road pop up shop.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And this was one of the last ones we did.
- 9:57Speaker 2: I think there you got what's that on the bin?
- 10:03Speaker 2: We we have looks like I mean, there's a lot
- 10:05Speaker 2: of backdrops there. I see that would have been a
- 10:07Speaker 2: probably the warp tour tent from whatever year.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That was probably a lot of merchandise in there. Yeah,
- 10:15Speaker 1: they learn out.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's about time to have another one of those.
- 10:20Speaker 2: By the way, we're overflowing yet again.
- 10:23Speaker 4: During the car park of the back room and anally
- 10:25Speaker 4: bade you get heaps of peaple.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Actually, there you go. That's a great ideas.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Were thanks for your time today, rather be the pleasure
- 10:33Speaker 3: I'd written. Law will be here through October and November.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Check out their socials to see where near you and
- 10:39Speaker 3: I'll be at the back room brother, So it cuts
- 10:41Speaker 3: you up and never be at end.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely can't wait. Man, Thank you, I don't you
- 10:44Speaker 1: take care
