- 0:01Speaker 1: It's so crazy.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I mean, just dead asleep one second, and then all
- 0:04Speaker 2: of a sudden, the doe and that buck just up
- 0:07Speaker 2: on their feet, like, looking over here.
- 0:09Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Maybe a coyote over here.
- 0:12Speaker 4: Maybe there's more deer coming over here, so I can't
- 0:16Speaker 4: see it on the phone.
- 0:18Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I do know it's kind of up-down. That may seem.
- 0:23Speaker 5: Like too much, but I bet you it's going to take.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Me an hour to get there.
- 0:40Speaker 4: What you just heard were my post shot thoughts after
- 0:43Speaker 4: sitting on a buck for over two hours. Seemed like
- 0:46Speaker 4: five hours, but maybe it was just two. Welcome to
- 0:49Speaker 4: the 12 and 26 podcast. This is a companion show
- 0:53Speaker 4: to our 12 and 26 films rolling out this year. Now,
- 0:58Speaker 4: if you're just tuning into this now and haven't already
- 1:01Speaker 4: seen the new film, which, by the way, I hate
- 1:06Speaker 4: calling them films. They're still episodes to me. It is
- 1:09Speaker 4: out on the MeatEater channel. Please hop over there and
- 1:12Speaker 4: watch it and smash the old like and subscribe buttons.
- 1:16Speaker 4: There's still more 12 and 26 films coming, so please
- 1:20Speaker 4: keep checking back on the MeatEater YouTube channel. Today I'm
- 1:24Speaker 4: here with Garrett Long and Phil the Engineer to address
- 1:28Speaker 4: your questions about my mule deer hunt. Thank you all
- 1:31Speaker 4: for writing in. posting questions on YouTube and on social media.
- 1:36Speaker 4: We've curated a handful of the most compelling audience questions.
- 1:40Speaker 4: I'm going to do my best to answer them here now. Uh,
- 1:45Speaker 4: this episode in particular is centered around a solo backcountry
- 1:49Speaker 4: mule deer hunt, kind of solo. Um, I didn't film
- 1:52Speaker 4: it myself, so I had, uh, Max Barta there with me,
- 1:56Speaker 4: which was a lot of fun. Um, But it was
- 1:58Speaker 4: in the western United States. The hunt was remote, incredibly
- 2:02Speaker 4: demanding physically. Really tested my skills and patience, kind of.
- 2:08Speaker 4: It wasn't an easy hunt, but it wasn't the hardest
- 2:11Speaker 4: hunt I've been on either. But again, if you haven't
- 2:14Speaker 4: watched it, go check it out now, and all of
- 2:16Speaker 4: this will make a lot more sense. This time around,
- 2:19Speaker 4: let's start with some general comments before getting into the
- 2:22Speaker 4: actual questions.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Good or bad?
- 2:24Speaker 4: We will start with a few more questions. a few
- 2:27Speaker 4: of the more critical comments, and then move on to
- 2:30Speaker 4: what folks seem to enjoy about the film. And then
- 2:33Speaker 4: we'll get into some actual questions from all of you. So,
- 2:37Speaker 4: number one, should I read out the guy's handle or
- 2:41Speaker 4: the person's handle?
- 2:44Speaker 6: You can if you want to. I don't think they're
- 2:46Speaker 6: trying to stay out of it.
- 2:46Speaker 1: It's just a handle.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Kurt Thomason, 4620, wrote, Latvian Eagle kidded up like he's
- 2:54Speaker 4: a Formula One hunter. guess i'm priced out of this
- 2:58Speaker 4: sport too um i wish i could remember exactly what
- 3:04Speaker 4: my kit was i didn't feel like it was too
- 3:06Speaker 4: overboard i feel like i had socks undies a pair
- 3:10Speaker 4: of pants probably a base layer up top my undies
- 3:14Speaker 4: kind of my bottom base layer and then uh Usually
- 3:19Speaker 4: like a second layer. And I think it's my second layer.
- 3:22Speaker 4: I was wearing the, uh, suppressor, um, the soft shell jacket.
- 3:26Speaker 4: And then, uh, I probably just had a, uh, a
- 3:29Speaker 4: big puffy over that. Cause the weather was really nice.
- 3:31Speaker 4: I didn't carry any rain gear.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Um, so I don't know. Formula one.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Um, I guess that means it's like just really, really expensive.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I mean, that big down puffy jacket is an expensive jacket,
- 3:44Speaker 4: but I think the rest of that kit is probably
- 3:46Speaker 4: like 500 bucks.
- 3:49Speaker 5: I don't know, man. Formula One drivers are pretty sharp.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Sharp looking? Yeah. I didn't have my hair all.
- 3:57Speaker 4: I probably didn't get a haircut like a Formula One
- 3:59Speaker 4: guy before this hunt.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But I always tell everybody.
- 4:04Speaker 4: I try to remind people on the old Instagram that one,
- 4:08Speaker 4: you should just get off Instagram and go out hunting.
- 4:11Speaker 4: And if buying First Light gear or any other hunting
- 4:16Speaker 4: gear is keeping you from hunting.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Because of the price... Because you need.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Money for gas or you just need money for food
- 4:24Speaker 4: so that you can just have time to go hunting.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Don't buy the stuff. You don't need it. I mean,
- 4:31Speaker 4: literally all you need is some kind of a weapon
- 4:34Speaker 4: to go hunting. You don't even need camo. People killed
- 4:38Speaker 4: stuff in blue jeans and flannels for a lot of
- 4:41Speaker 4: years before we all got super hyped on camo.
- 4:44Speaker 7: So....
- 4:46Speaker 4: Yeah, man, if you're in a spot where you can't
- 4:49Speaker 4: do the first light thing, then, yeah, you can literally
- 4:53Speaker 4: wear the clothes that.
- 4:54Speaker 1: You probably went to work with.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Yeah, get out there.
- 4:57Speaker 4: And just get out there and make it happen.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 5:04Speaker 4: At JackTackle57 wrote, he must be an angler.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Great hunt.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Might I suggest a larger caliber rifle? Clearly the wind
- 5:13Speaker 4: was pushing your bullet. That elevation and those conditions, a
- 5:16Speaker 4: heavy bullet over 160 grains will buck the wind a
- 5:20Speaker 4: lot better. It's okay to be overgunned in the Rocky Mountains,
- 5:24Speaker 4: especially in.
- 5:27Speaker 1: By the way, you are a great shooter. Well, thanks, Jack.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's like a compliment sandwich, as Steve likes to say.
- 5:34Speaker 1: He's not wrong.
- 5:39Speaker 4: A heavier bullet, um, which I think actually in the
- 5:44Speaker 4: six fives, a buddy of mine who's a big time
- 5:46Speaker 4: shooter was telling me about like a one 75, maybe
- 5:51Speaker 4: kind of a custom bullet that he, he got from somewhere.
- 5:55Speaker 4: He says over in Sweden, that's all they shoot are
- 5:57Speaker 4: like the one 75s, uh, out of the six, five
- 6:00Speaker 4: out of the six fives, you know, which they've been shooting, uh,
- 6:03Speaker 4: moose over there with six fives for well over a
- 6:06Speaker 4: hundred years. Um, But yeah, he's not wrong. Bigger bullet
- 6:12Speaker 4: would have been less affected by the wind in that condition.
- 6:17Speaker 4: And yeah, I guess my response, why I would probably
- 6:21Speaker 4: still carry the gun I was carrying and probably stick
- 6:25Speaker 4: with my 160 grain bullets is that it's like, man.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You do a little bit of shooting. You do a
- 6:32Speaker 1: lot of carrying.
- 6:33Speaker 4: So having that short action and just a light setup
- 6:38Speaker 4: in that rifle was really nice. Usually once you go
- 6:41Speaker 4: to those heavier bullets, you're going to be in a
- 6:43Speaker 4: long action magnum. And I don't know. I guess you
- 6:48Speaker 4: could just shoot. 308 and have a heavier bullet.
- 6:51Speaker 5: Well, yeah, but that wouldn't have gone through the wind
- 6:53Speaker 5: as good as your PRC either. You don't? No. Like,
- 6:57Speaker 5: I think that.
- 6:58Speaker 4: 180-grainer out of a.
- 7:00Speaker 6: 308?
- 7:00Speaker 5: Well, I don't know what the BCs are, but. 308
- 7:04Speaker 5: with a 180-grainer, it's going to be slow.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 7: Right?
- 7:08Speaker 5: But weight is only part of the equation, right? So,
- 7:12Speaker 5: BC is really just how it flies through the wind, right?
- 7:16Speaker 5: And 6.5 PRC has been built around very high BC bolts.
- 7:19Speaker 5: I don't know what you were shooting, 140s, 156s. Do
- 7:22Speaker 5: you know?
- 7:23Speaker 1: They're probably the 140 Acubons.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Right, right.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's arguably a little bit light for that caliber,
- 7:29Speaker 5: but I think it's easy to say, well, heavier is better,
- 7:31Speaker 5: but man, I can tell you, generally speaking, out of a. 308,
- 7:35Speaker 5: your wind holds compared to a 6.5 PRC are dramatically more.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Okay, so I'd have to have probably a.
- 7:43Speaker 4: 30 caliber Magnum to really make a difference.
- 7:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:47Speaker 4: And then you've got to carry that sucker around for
- 7:49Speaker 4: a week until you get to make a couple shots.
- 7:53Speaker 6: Yep.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You know, the other answer is that, like, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 4: you just, and again, I really thought that wind was
- 8:00Speaker 4: pretty much coming straight in my face and I wasn't
- 8:02Speaker 4: going to get that drift. Um, but, uh, I could
- 8:06Speaker 4: have gotten closer, you know, where it, uh, it wouldn't,
- 8:10Speaker 4: wouldn't matter as much.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Uh, at trash hunt, interesting handle. He says meat eater
- 8:19Speaker 4: saying spot burning is a thing. Dot dot.
- 8:22Speaker 3: LOL.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Laugh out loud. Is that what that stands for?
- 8:27Speaker 4: Definitely.
- 8:27Speaker 6: We can roll this short clip here.
- 8:29Speaker 1: The spot burning thing is real. I'm just going to
- 8:31Speaker 1: try not to do it. I'm backpacking in.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Limiting factor is batteries for cameras. So about three, maybe
- 8:37Speaker 4: four nights is what we can do.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It's chilly. A little bit of snow on the ground. Mid-October.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Pretty excited.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Yep.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Um.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a thing, and we discuss it internally a
- 8:54Speaker 4: lot here in Meat Eater. I try to protect my
- 8:58Speaker 4: private land in Wisconsin because I don't need visitors there,
- 9:02Speaker 4: and the people that I hunt there with like to
- 9:04Speaker 4: go there and just get away and have peace and quiet.
- 9:08Speaker 4: So that's kind of why I don't really talk about
- 9:10Speaker 4: the county I'm in in Wisconsin when we go there.
- 9:15Speaker 4: But in this case where it's a unit or even
- 9:18Speaker 4: a state, you know, all the locals that are mostly
- 9:22Speaker 4: hunting there, not somewhere else, you know, they like to
- 9:26Speaker 4: keep their spots to themselves and I can't blame them
- 9:28Speaker 4: for that. So we've decided to talk less about, you know,
- 9:33Speaker 4: even to the extent of saying not the state where
- 9:37Speaker 4: we're at. Because honestly, it's just not that important, right? It's,
- 9:42Speaker 4: I think for the viewer, the adventure, the content that
- 9:45Speaker 4: they watch, it's not going to be any less engaging
- 9:48Speaker 4: if they don't know which boundaries we were hunting within. Yeah, man, I'm.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Going to challenge that a little bit. I think, uh,
- 9:58Speaker 5: you know, we've found like, imagine you draw a tag
- 10:03Speaker 5: in Colorado, um, and you want to look up elk
- 10:09Speaker 5: hunting in Colorado. What do you type in?
- 10:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:13Speaker 5: Colorado elk hunting. I do think that there's a subset
- 10:17Speaker 5: of the audience that And a lot of the questions
- 10:21Speaker 5: were around where they think you might have been. I
- 10:24Speaker 5: think there's a large subset of the audience that genuinely
- 10:30Speaker 5: does want to know general state of where you're at.
- 10:35Speaker 1: A large subset? Like more than 25%?
- 10:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that mostly the people that don't want
- 10:41Speaker 5: to know where you're at are the people living in
- 10:43Speaker 5: that state.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 5: So it's a balance for us of being approachable and
- 10:51Speaker 5: everything like that and showing opportunity.
- 10:57Speaker 4: I think that we have historical evidence that we have
- 11:03Speaker 4: done it to places in the past.
- 11:06Speaker 1: The Meteor Show.
- 11:08Speaker 4: I won't mention which ones, but I've heard enough where
- 11:13Speaker 4: they're like, oh yeah, after you aired that one, Things
- 11:16Speaker 4: changed around here. You know, took more points to draw
- 11:18Speaker 4: my unit or there are more hunting leases all of
- 11:21Speaker 4: a sudden in this area. Um, people never knew that
- 11:25Speaker 4: we had this opportunity here. And of course we're like,
- 11:28Speaker 4: Oh man, that's a bummer. Cause like, that's what we're
- 11:31Speaker 4: interested in.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Are these sort of like off the wall opportunities that
- 11:34Speaker 4: are neat that you haven't heard about? Like we want
- 11:37Speaker 4: to go experience them and we want to share them
- 11:39Speaker 4: with the, with the viewers. But again, the locals live
- 11:43Speaker 4: in there that, uh, That spotlight's not good.
- 11:46Speaker 5: Yeah. It's a balance, man.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yep.
- 11:49Speaker 1: It's a thing. We're aware of it.
- 11:53Speaker 4: We're constantly trying to figure out how to do it right.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Let's see. Flip side. Oh, okay. More comments. RobertWatson-N6Z wrote....
- 12:11Speaker 4: Absolutely respect the accountability and humility at the end when
- 12:14Speaker 4: he realized his point of impact wasn't where he thought
- 12:17Speaker 4: it was due to the fall on the mountain.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Other haunting content creators would.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Have cut that part out and attributed the less than
- 12:24Speaker 4: ideal shots to the fall. This is why I'm consistently
- 12:28Speaker 4: drawn to Meat Eater over others. Side note, how he
- 12:32Speaker 4: was able to find that super secret backcountry roadless area
- 12:35Speaker 4: in Texas is amazing.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Thanks, Robert.
- 12:39Speaker 4: It took a lot of digging on the old Onyx,
- 12:42Speaker 4: but found it. Yeah, thanks overall, I guess, for the
- 12:47Speaker 4: nice words there. Yeah, I just feel like it's, for me,
- 12:54Speaker 4: the whatever, the humility and all that is not what
- 12:59Speaker 4: I was thinking about, including the checking the rifle zero.
- 13:03Speaker 4: It's more like, oh, this is what I'm going to
- 13:05Speaker 4: do anyways when I get home, because I have to, because...
- 13:09Speaker 4: my kid's probably going to shoot that rifle a week
- 13:12Speaker 4: later at a deer and I need to make sure
- 13:14Speaker 4: that it's on. And so it's kind of like, I'm
- 13:17Speaker 4: going to do it. I then want to film it
- 13:20Speaker 4: and include it so that people just see like more
- 13:23Speaker 4: of the process. You know, sometimes it's so easy to
- 13:26Speaker 4: gloss over that or like, you know, the things that
- 13:30Speaker 4: happen around camp, you know, between the times that you're
- 13:32Speaker 4: actually out chasing elk, whether it's cook-ins, you know, how
- 13:36Speaker 4: you're sleeping, you know, whatever it is. It's just kind of,
- 13:41Speaker 4: I don't know, it adds to it, right?
- 13:43Speaker 1: When you see more of it. Dalton Unguided.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Nice.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Hardcore. Cold October. Elk and deer season. Cross.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Awesome country that looks like it would hold giant deer.
- 14:01Speaker 4: 30 doe to one buck ratio. Reeks of blank state.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Ha ha.
- 14:11Speaker 4: So, yeah, Dalton just wanted to try to figure out
- 14:13Speaker 4: what state I was hunting in.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Most of the questions were about what state.
- 14:18Speaker 1: There's a lot of that. Yeah. I didn't look.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I try not to, unless I have to. What we've
- 14:24Speaker 4: been talking about doing is making a, Phil, we really
- 14:27Speaker 4: have to do this. Garrett Long is like our head of,
- 14:30Speaker 4: what is your title again now?
- 14:31Speaker 1: You're not head of content. You're the VP of.
- 14:34Speaker 5: SVP of content.
- 14:35Speaker 4: SVP of content.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Which only matters when the chief of content isn't in
- 14:39Speaker 5: the room.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:40Speaker 4: But I feel like people are nice to me. I
- 14:45Speaker 4: appreciate it. But Randall, they really get after him in
- 14:49Speaker 4: the comments. Don't say nice things. And Randall and I
- 14:53Speaker 4: have been thinking it'd be fun just to find all
- 14:55Speaker 4: of the worst comments and read them and then talk
- 14:58Speaker 4: smack about them. I think that would be a lot
- 15:00Speaker 4: of fun. See, Phil, you're already laughing.
- 15:02Speaker 6: I mean, it would be a very fun video, but
- 15:04Speaker 6: it would also encourage people to comment on things in
- 15:07Speaker 6: bad faith, just trying to get selected for this.
- 15:10Speaker 1: That's true. Well, we won't tell that we're doing it.
- 15:13Speaker 4: So just like the people that are trolls already, they
- 15:16Speaker 4: would be the ones whose comments we would read.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 6: And we would dox the commenters and then make fun
- 15:21Speaker 6: of them and their lives and their appearance, of course,
- 15:24Speaker 6: as well, right?
- 15:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yes, okay. Yeah, okay. All right.
- 15:28Speaker 4: So that's all for the just straight up comments. Appreciate it.
- 15:35Speaker 4: And we appreciate you guys watching and interacting.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It's great.
- 15:40Speaker 4: So with that, let's get into some of the more
- 15:44Speaker 4: direct questions from the audience.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Garrett, what you got?
- 15:49Speaker 5: Yeah, man. So there was actually a lot of questions
- 15:52Speaker 5: just about gear in general. BlaineCyphers3406, which it's hard to
- 15:59Speaker 5: imagine there's that many BlaineCyphers. But he asked, what's the
- 16:03Speaker 5: rifle setup, scope, caliber? Silencer. Are there any just highlights
- 16:08Speaker 5: you want to hit there? A litany of questions throughout
- 16:11Speaker 5: the comments about what caliber and gun and all that
- 16:15Speaker 5: you're using.
- 16:16Speaker 4: And that's one of those things where I should have
- 16:17Speaker 4: just addressed it in the episode because people always wonder.
- 16:22Speaker 4: And I'm pulling up the scope so that I don't
- 16:27Speaker 4: mess up any of the numbers. Um... Scope-wise is the
- 16:35Speaker 4: Sig Whiskey 6 3-18x44.
- 16:40Speaker 1: First focal plane. Rangefinder, probably one of the most important
- 16:50Speaker 1: parts of that whole thing.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Because now with the BDX app, we do enough shooting
- 16:58Speaker 4: of these rifles. We true them, range them, What's the
- 17:03Speaker 4: word I'm looking for?
- 17:04Speaker 1: Not true.
- 17:05Speaker 4: But when you kind of check and make sure that
- 17:07Speaker 4: the ballistics that the range finder is giving you is
- 17:11Speaker 4: actually it.
- 17:13Speaker 5: True. All right.
- 17:15Speaker 1: It is true.
- 17:17Speaker 4: But man, it's so slick when you can just range
- 17:19Speaker 4: something at 400 yards, which I think is roughly what
- 17:22Speaker 4: that shot was. And then it says it right to
- 17:25Speaker 4: you in the range finder.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Like, yeah, you need to go up.
- 17:27Speaker 4: 2.5 or 3.0, whatever it was. Um, just gives you
- 17:33Speaker 4: a lot of confidence in making that shot and knowing
- 17:35Speaker 4: that you're going to hold that on. And it's going
- 17:37Speaker 4: to hit pretty much dead on as long as you,
- 17:39Speaker 4: you know, execute a nice shot. But, uh, that was the, uh,
- 17:44Speaker 4: SIG cross, uh, sawtooth right in a, in a PR
- 17:48Speaker 4: in a six, five PRC. I did have a, I
- 17:52Speaker 4: guess like semi custom barrel put on there. It was,
- 17:55Speaker 4: it's a short 18 inch, um, uh, carbon fiber from, uh, proof. And, um,
- 18:07Speaker 4: you know, the shortness of the barrel, it definitely takes away, uh,
- 18:10Speaker 4: from the velocity, but man, does it make it easy
- 18:13Speaker 4: to run a suppressor on there? And man, I just
- 18:16Speaker 4: love shooting with the press person.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 4: I love shooting with a suppressor these days. Um, so
- 18:24Speaker 4: I give up a little bit of, uh, velocity to, uh,
- 18:28Speaker 4: you know, to be able to run it quiet and
- 18:30Speaker 4: reduce that recoil a bunch. So it was a very nice,
- 18:34Speaker 4: you know, easy, compact rifle to pack around.
- 18:40Speaker 1: What else?
- 18:41Speaker 5: Well, you never actually said what range finder you had.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Oh, just the, I believe it's the Kilo 8.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Oh, the 8K, yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 1: 8K, yeah.
- 18:52Speaker 4: And then the meat eater.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Suppressor.
- 18:56Speaker 4: That's, uh, built by, uh, silencer central. Um, nice, you know, compact.
- 19:05Speaker 4: How long is that thing? Six inches, right under six.
- 19:08Speaker 4: It's like five and three quarters, something like that. Um,
- 19:12Speaker 4: does the trick, especially for that smaller caliber. It's a,
- 19:15Speaker 4: you know, it seems like it's the perfect combo. And then,
- 19:18Speaker 4: like I said earlier, 140 grain Nosler Acubond, uh, loaded
- 19:25Speaker 4: uh sig loads those up um yeah i can't complain
- 19:30Speaker 4: like that all those sig crosses shoot inch or better
- 19:34Speaker 4: uh for me just with with those factory ammo from
- 19:37Speaker 4: sig um and what's even more important i think at
- 19:42Speaker 4: times is that uh the deviation of the uh velocities
- 19:46Speaker 4: it's like you know more about this than i do
- 19:49Speaker 4: if I feel like we find a lot of times
- 19:52Speaker 4: with the SIG ammo, it's been like less than 10
- 19:55Speaker 4: feet a second. And you were telling me, I think,
- 19:58Speaker 4: at one point that average for a lot of factory
- 20:01Speaker 4: ammo is going to be more like 20 to 30
- 20:03Speaker 4: feet per second.
- 20:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 4: And that, like, folks, like, at 400 yards, it makes
- 20:08Speaker 4: a big difference on your point of impact when, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 4: your bullet's not going the same speed as the last
- 20:14Speaker 4: bullet you shot or the next bullet you're going to shoot. So, yeah,
- 20:20Speaker 4: that's pretty much it for the rifle setup.
- 20:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So, Galliper, Silencer.
- 20:27Speaker 5: And I think on that, so another question we got
- 20:31Speaker 5: by at 306. Vic Z KO five. Uh, he asked about,
- 20:39Speaker 5: it seems that you're a fan of, of silencers, um,
- 20:44Speaker 5: on your high country hunts. And he's just curious for
- 20:46Speaker 5: your reasoning. It says he has speculation, but, um, he'd
- 20:50Speaker 5: appreciate you to outline kind of why you like to
- 20:52Speaker 5: use them.
- 20:53Speaker 4: Hmm, man. I like them on any kind of hunt,
- 20:57Speaker 4: high country, low country, back country, front country. Uh, man
- 21:04Speaker 4: you just don't have to take that extra step of
- 21:07Speaker 4: uh you know throwing in ear protection and it's kind
- 21:10Speaker 4: of got built in um you know recoil suppression um
- 21:15Speaker 4: you know it's not quite as much as a break
- 21:18Speaker 4: but golly i don't ever want to shoot a gun
- 21:20Speaker 4: with a break on it ever if i don't have
- 21:22Speaker 4: to um I just got my hearing tested again recently
- 21:28Speaker 4: because we got some new hearing protection. And so when
- 21:31Speaker 4: you go in to get the molds, they also do
- 21:33Speaker 4: some testing. And then my left ear is so bad
- 21:36Speaker 4: that they're actually, they're starting the conversation of putting in
- 21:40Speaker 4: a hearing aid in my left ear. As a right-handed shooter,
- 21:43Speaker 4: that's the ear that is, you know, kind of pointed
- 21:45Speaker 4: towards the muzzle more. And I feel like for the last,
- 21:49Speaker 4: 10 to, you know, definitely 15, maybe even come on
- 21:52Speaker 4: 20 years. Like I've been pretty good about like always
- 21:55Speaker 4: at the range, um, you know, and even having, and
- 21:58Speaker 4: just a pair of those, a lot of times I
- 22:00Speaker 4: wear those Howard light, uh, it's like a neck band
- 22:04Speaker 4: that has the two foamies on it and just can
- 22:06Speaker 4: stick those in real fast when I need to take
- 22:08Speaker 4: a shot. But all that being said, man, I did
- 22:11Speaker 4: enough damage as a youngster that, uh, I'm looking at
- 22:14Speaker 4: a hearing aid.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Um, so yeah, Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 4: I don't know. I just don't see a reason not to.
- 22:21Speaker 4: I mean, they're so light these days. Um, I think
- 22:26Speaker 4: carrying that extra little bit away is, is totally worthwhile.
- 22:31Speaker 5: Yeah, man, I'm 35 and, uh, they say I need
- 22:33Speaker 5: a hearing aid in my left ear.
- 22:35Speaker 1: There you go.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Oh, either put, put on muffs or get a suppressor. Um,
- 22:43Speaker 5: all right, man, shifting gears a little bit. Um, another
- 22:47Speaker 5: question we got wrote in is his name is Garrett actually.
- 22:50Speaker 5: So he's gotta be a pretty smart dude. Uh, he
- 22:52Speaker 5: asked when hunting for mule deer, what are some of
- 22:54Speaker 5: the best tips for e-scouting?
- 22:57Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Good question.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Um, I think like all, any, any animal, you know,
- 23:08Speaker 4: they need water, food cover. So even with mule deer,
- 23:13Speaker 4: you gotta be looking for that. Uh, I think defining out,
- 23:18Speaker 4: you know, you can always call the biologist or the
- 23:20Speaker 4: warden and find out sort of what elevation these deer
- 23:23Speaker 4: like to hang at in whatever unit you're hunting, depending
- 23:27Speaker 4: on the.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Time of year.
- 23:28Speaker 4: And then go to the EMAP and, you know, find
- 23:34Speaker 4: those elevations and find country that looks good. I mean,
- 23:38Speaker 4: for me, for mule deer hunting, I haven't done too
- 23:40Speaker 4: much desert mule deer hunting.
- 23:42Speaker 1: It's mostly been, I don't know.
- 23:45Speaker 4: I mean, we still live, we live in the Western
- 23:48Speaker 4: high country, you know, arid desert, but, um, find the feed,
- 23:57Speaker 4: I guess. And with e-scouting, you know, you're gonna have
- 23:59Speaker 4: to find the aspects, meaning like which direction is the
- 24:02Speaker 4: hill pointing to find the feed that the deer need. Um, yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Cover next to food with water nearby. Um, And I
- 24:14Speaker 4: think what else in particular, um, you know, spots where
- 24:20Speaker 4: too many people can't get to too easily. I think
- 24:24Speaker 4: that's a good, uh, tip for hunting mule deer. But honestly,
- 24:28Speaker 4: it's like this unit that I was in, there wasn't
- 24:31Speaker 4: a lot of country that didn't have some deer. Um,
- 24:35Speaker 4: you know, some a little bit less than others. Uh,
- 24:40Speaker 4: but I think that, man, You just kind of have
- 24:43Speaker 4: to put your boots on the ground and go and
- 24:45Speaker 4: look at it.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Um, yeah, sorry.
- 24:49Speaker 4: I don't have too much more for that. Uh, but yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 4: I found zones that just didn't have too many roads,
- 24:56Speaker 4: didn't have too many trails. Um, and you know, places
- 25:01Speaker 4: where the deer can feed and not get messed with.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Um, Yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 5: It reminds me, uh, old Randy Newberg said one time that, uh,
- 25:12Speaker 5: there's a lot more deer habitat than there are deer.
- 25:15Speaker 7: Hmm.
- 25:17Speaker 5: And he was kind of getting at, like, you just
- 25:19Speaker 5: got to go look at a point. Like you, you
- 25:22Speaker 5: can do a lot of prep, but at a point
- 25:24Speaker 5: you just got to go look. And on that note
- 25:29Speaker 5: a little bit, uh, and, and, and Phil will play
- 25:32Speaker 5: a clip here, but, um, another really good question, man, that,
- 25:36Speaker 5: that I've actually thought about is from Kurt's world, uh,
- 25:39Speaker 5: at Kurt's world. Um, and he said with back country hunting,
- 25:45Speaker 5: do you need to worry about scent if you're camping
- 25:48Speaker 5: in near your glassing spot?
- 25:51Speaker 4: Hmm, man, on a, on a, any, I guess back
- 25:56Speaker 4: country hunt. I try not to camp too close. Hmm. uh,
- 26:01Speaker 4: to whatever I'm, I'm hunting or wherever I think, you know,
- 26:04Speaker 4: the spot that I think the animals are going to be.
- 26:06Speaker 4: And like in that spot, sure. There was probably deer
- 26:10Speaker 4: on the ridge that I camped on. I mean, you're
- 26:12Speaker 4: gonna have to give and take a little bit, but
- 26:15Speaker 4: you know, with hiking, sweating as much as I do,
- 26:18Speaker 4: you know, when you're going up and down mountains, I mean,
- 26:23Speaker 4: I don't do any kind of scent control for those
- 26:25Speaker 4: types of hunts. I usually just feel like when I'm
- 26:30Speaker 4: you know, going to find a deer by glassing, it's
- 26:34Speaker 4: going to be far enough away where no matter what
- 26:36Speaker 4: the wind's doing, they're probably not going to pick me
- 26:38Speaker 4: off by scent. Once I start making a stalk, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 4: then I'm going to start worrying about what the wind's doing.
- 26:47Speaker 1: But again, I feel like most times, you know, four,
- 26:53Speaker 1: 500 yards, you can get.
- 26:56Speaker 4: With these animals, with the wind on your back, and
- 26:59Speaker 4: they're not really going to spook.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Okay.
- 27:00Speaker 4: You know?
- 27:00Speaker 6: I'm going to roll this clip really here.
- 27:02Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:03Speaker 4: I did not achieve my goal of one mule deer
- 27:05Speaker 4: before dark, but that's not going to deter me. I'm
- 27:09Speaker 4: camped right on top of a great glassing knob, and
- 27:12Speaker 4: I'll be back on the glass at first light.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Yeah, so you were fine glassing from camp. just because
- 27:22Speaker 5: you had that buffer where you were kind of past
- 27:25Speaker 5: that four or 500 yard zone.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Yeah, and again, like I said, there's probably animals on
- 27:29Speaker 4: the ridge I was on, but you can't, I mean,
- 27:31Speaker 4: you just can't always go where there's zero animals.
- 27:37Speaker 5: And so another question, you remained optimistic in the video,
- 27:44Speaker 5: but after glassing for half a day, this made me
- 27:48Speaker 5: kind of realize that maybe I have a patience issue.
- 27:52Speaker 5: Were you like second guessing yourself at all that night
- 27:55Speaker 5: when you were setting up your tent?
- 27:57Speaker 1: No, no.
- 27:59Speaker 4: I just feel like one, one afternoon just.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Without a deer.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:06Speaker 4: You got to give it more time. And honestly, it's
- 28:09Speaker 4: like in that kind of, and when you know you're
- 28:12Speaker 4: in deer country.
- 28:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 28:14Speaker 4: You got to just give it more time. And I
- 28:16Speaker 4: always remind myself, like I'm only looking for one. And
- 28:19Speaker 4: maybe it's that kind of a spot where there aren't
- 28:21Speaker 4: a lot of other deer that a single big buck,
- 28:24Speaker 4: or maybe with a couple does, that's where you're going
- 28:27Speaker 4: to find them. Because when there's less deer, and if
- 28:29Speaker 4: you're in good deer habitat, that's more food, more cover,
- 28:33Speaker 4: more all of that for the deer that are in
- 28:35Speaker 4: that area. And, you know, hopefully you think the big
- 28:40Speaker 4: buck's going to.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Be in there.
- 28:42Speaker 4: But no, I mean, but I did move after whatever
- 28:46Speaker 4: it was, two and a half, three days. And when
- 28:49Speaker 4: it just seemed like I wasn't seeing enough and it
- 28:51Speaker 4: was mostly, I was seeing more hunters than deer. But yeah, honestly,
- 28:59Speaker 4: like I could have had more patience and probably just
- 29:02Speaker 4: like stuck to it and stayed in there and eventually
- 29:05Speaker 4: turned up a buck in that spot.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I think so. Cause you got to trust it.
- 29:12Speaker 4: You know, if you like, if you're in a good spot,
- 29:14Speaker 4: you know, it's deer country, you've seen some does around.
- 29:18Speaker 4: And again, that time of year, late October, those deer
- 29:22Speaker 4: are starting to move. You know, those deer have a
- 29:25Speaker 4: little bit of migration that they do. And so, you know,
- 29:31Speaker 4: any morning you could wake up and there's a whole
- 29:33Speaker 4: new batch of deer in your zone.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 5: I mean, the rut can bring anything in. That too. So.
- 29:40Speaker 5: sticking with the camp theme, another question that came in was,
- 29:44Speaker 5: how does all the clothing you wear play into your
- 29:48Speaker 5: sleeping bag and or rating? Meaning, do you put on
- 29:52Speaker 5: all your gear at night and then get into a
- 29:54Speaker 5: lighter bag? Or do you just always bring the warmest
- 29:57Speaker 5: bag possible?
- 30:00Speaker 4: Um, I don't bring the warmest bag possible, but I
- 30:04Speaker 4: also do not put on all my gear, uh, to
- 30:07Speaker 4: sleep at night. Um, I kind of have that in
- 30:10Speaker 4: the back of my head is like, Oh, if something
- 30:12Speaker 4: really changes in the weather and it gets cold, like
- 30:15Speaker 4: I have that option, but I've found that when I
- 30:17Speaker 4: wear too many clothes, um, like I just have a
- 30:21Speaker 4: harder time regulating and I end up sort of sweating.
- 30:24Speaker 4: And then once you sweat, you got it, you know,
- 30:27Speaker 4: you're going to get evaporative cooling and you're going to
- 30:29Speaker 4: get colder. So I like to, you know, like I've
- 30:34Speaker 4: definitely done like a pair of pants, you know, in
- 30:36Speaker 4: a base layer for sure. Or maybe my long johns
- 30:39Speaker 4: on the bottom and the base layer up top. But
- 30:41Speaker 4: I feel like when I get too much over that,
- 30:43Speaker 4: it just gets too warm in there and I sweat
- 30:46Speaker 4: and then that's a bad, bad, bad gig. So in
- 30:49Speaker 4: my mind, though, I do think about In the worst
- 30:53Speaker 4: case scenario, let's just say they're calling for lows in
- 30:57Speaker 4: the upper 20s, low 30s, but you're like, oh, I'm
- 31:02Speaker 4: going to be up on the mountain, so maybe it
- 31:03Speaker 4: could drop to 15 one night. In that scenario, can
- 31:08Speaker 4: I survive? I always ask that question to myself. In
- 31:10Speaker 4: the worst case scenario, when I'm out there, can I
- 31:13Speaker 4: make it through the night by... I had a big
- 31:16Speaker 4: puffy down jacket. Instead of wearing it, I could actually
- 31:19Speaker 4: just lay it over my bag and add some insulation.
- 31:26Speaker 4: So I more think about it this way where I'll wear,
- 31:29Speaker 4: I'll bring less clothes knowing that I have a sleeping
- 31:32Speaker 4: bag that if there's like a really cold evening or
- 31:35Speaker 4: cold morning, I could use that bag, wrap it around me,
- 31:38Speaker 4: do some glassing, wrap it around me while I'm preparing
- 31:41Speaker 4: food or whatever, because it's going to be probably a
- 31:43Speaker 4: very short period of time in the day when it
- 31:46Speaker 4: is that cold.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Sun's going to come up. It's going to warm me up.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Or at night it's like well you're gonna eat and
- 31:51Speaker 4: then you're getting in your bag to go to sleep
- 31:53Speaker 4: so you really only have like these short periods when
- 31:55Speaker 4: it's going to be really cold you kind of have
- 31:57Speaker 4: to endure before you're going to be fine.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Again yep yep makes sense um and then ryan ryan
- 32:05Speaker 5: scott ray wrote in and said how far from a
- 32:10Speaker 5: main road did you have to go to find this
- 32:12Speaker 5: spot and i there was a lot of questions similar
- 32:14Speaker 5: to this because it did have such a backcountry vibe
- 32:17Speaker 5: um you know, in the week we got the on it,
- 32:19Speaker 5: like the e-scouting question as well. Like, is there kind
- 32:24Speaker 5: of a level where you just know you need to
- 32:27Speaker 5: get away from, from a main road or is it?
- 32:29Speaker 1: No, no.
- 32:30Speaker 7: Okay.
- 32:31Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 32:32Speaker 4: I think it's more about finding a spot where the
- 32:35Speaker 4: spots that are overlooked, because these days it's like, buddy
- 32:41Speaker 4: of mine, like many years ago, who's in Colorado, he said,
- 32:44Speaker 4: it's like, he's like, everybody that comes here now is
- 32:46Speaker 4: like a little mini Cam Haynes. He's like, we were
- 32:50Speaker 4: 10 miles in, covered up in guys. And it's like,
- 32:53Speaker 4: sometimes that hurts people because they're like, oh, the farther
- 32:57Speaker 4: I get, the better it's going to be. And sure,
- 33:00Speaker 4: there's some truth to that because you are cutting out
- 33:04Speaker 4: people the farther you get. But it's like, how many
- 33:09Speaker 4: people does it take to make a place busy, right? Sure.
- 33:12Speaker 4: I mean, if there's two or three groups hunting the
- 33:14Speaker 4: same basin, it feels real busy. Um, so I think
- 33:18Speaker 4: it's more about just finding the spots that are like,
- 33:21Speaker 4: are overlooked. And sometimes those can be.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Close to the road.
- 33:25Speaker 4: They can be close to town even, um, cause people
- 33:28Speaker 4: are just driving by them all the time. Um, if
- 33:31Speaker 4: there's not easy access, you know, you have to maybe
- 33:35Speaker 4: go around some private land to get in there, or
- 33:37Speaker 4: you got to, paddle a canoe across the reservoir to
- 33:40Speaker 4: get in there or there's no trail. And so you're
- 33:43Speaker 4: like right off the bat, you just got to go
- 33:45Speaker 4: up some Ridge with no trail. I don't know.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Um, yeah. So I didn't have to go far from.
- 33:52Speaker 4: And when they say main road, I don't know exactly
- 33:55Speaker 4: what they're asking if that's pavement or just something you
- 33:58Speaker 4: can drive. But honestly, I think that that pack out, uh,
- 34:02Speaker 4: where we finally killed the buck was, it was definitely
- 34:04Speaker 4: less than two miles.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Like it, it wasn't too, too bad.
- 34:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 34:08Speaker 5: And so you brought it up, but we had a
- 34:10Speaker 5: couple of questions come in and then before you answer,
- 34:14Speaker 5: I'll let Phil play the clip. But a couple of
- 34:18Speaker 5: questions came in about, you know, first spot doesn't work out.
- 34:22Speaker 5: You go to the second trailhead, but you just immediately
- 34:26Speaker 5: get off the trail and start bushwhacking it. Let's play
- 34:30Speaker 5: the clip here, Phil.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Instead of walking up the trail, I decided to cross
- 34:35Speaker 4: a creek and push back towards a ridge with no trail.
- 34:39Speaker 4: Having never been here, I picked the most jungle-like willow
- 34:43Speaker 4: thicket in the county to go through. Buddy, it's deep.
- 34:49Speaker 1: You don't want to just fall in here. half of it.
- 35:07Speaker 4: Yeah when I pole planted to jump the creek the
- 35:11Speaker 4: pole like this pointy end stuck between some rocks and
- 35:14Speaker 4: it literally pulled it right out of the upper part
- 35:17Speaker 4: of the shaft and never to be seen again this.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Looks like fun.
- 35:31Speaker 2: That's open 85 yards. Talk about some country to get
- 35:43Speaker 2: turned around in. There's a creek to our left, maybe.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I feel like we crossed that.
- 35:52Speaker 5: F * * * er a bunch.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I just f * * * ing don't know how
- 35:55Speaker 2: to get around it.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Do you want to try to go around it? It
- 35:58Speaker 1: was thick.
- 36:01Speaker 4: You can tell by my vocabulary I'm a bit frustrated,
- 36:05Speaker 4: but maybe this is what it takes to get away
- 36:07Speaker 4: from the crowd. If it wasn't for Onyx, I'd still
- 36:11Speaker 4: be beating the brush.
- 36:16Speaker 5: Yeah, so, I mean, it looks like you had to
- 36:18Speaker 5: work harder, but is that kind of a common strategy
- 36:20Speaker 5: of yours where you'll roll into a trailhead and just
- 36:22Speaker 5: be like, everybody's going this way because that's where the
- 36:25Speaker 5: trail goes, I'm going this other way?
- 36:27Speaker 1: I mean, you know how it is. I mean, some trails...
- 36:30Speaker 1: You know, they zigzag.
- 36:35Speaker 4: What's the other term for that?
- 36:37Speaker 1: Switchbacks. Switchbacks. Thanks, Phil. See?
- 36:40Speaker 4: Phil said he's going to have nothing to add to
- 36:41Speaker 4: the conversation.
- 36:42Speaker 1: He just got switchback. Nailed it.
- 36:44Speaker 4: That could be a good trivia question, actually.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Hold on, folks.
- 36:48Speaker 6: I think it's been one.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Really?
- 36:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Dang it.
- 36:50Speaker 1: And kind of recently. Dang it. I got to host
- 36:55Speaker 1: an episode in a week.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 36:57Speaker 1: No, it's all good.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Never know.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Um, but, uh, yeah, you never know.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Like the trail is going to take you to someplace,
- 37:09Speaker 4: whether it's some ridge and it might be a great
- 37:11Speaker 4: ridge to go hunt or a great overlook to go hunt.
- 37:15Speaker 4: But the, just the spot when I was done looking
- 37:18Speaker 4: at Onyx that night, I was like, okay, where I
- 37:20Speaker 4: want to go is like, it almost paralleled the trail,
- 37:24Speaker 4: but it was up the ridge instead of going up
- 37:26Speaker 4: the gut. And so eventually when I was on the ridge,
- 37:29Speaker 4: I was probably, I was glassing across the trail itself,
- 37:35Speaker 4: but the trail just didn't go up that ridge. I
- 37:36Speaker 4: needed to get high so I could glass, right? And
- 37:41Speaker 4: I just hadn't scouted it. I mean, I pulled in
- 37:45Speaker 4: the night before, it was dark and it's like, or
- 37:49Speaker 4: almost dark. And we just didn't have enough time to
- 37:51Speaker 4: really find like where to go exactly. And when I
- 37:53Speaker 4: walked out that evening, in dusk, I didn't have to
- 37:56Speaker 4: go through that jungle. I literally just went like a
- 37:59Speaker 4: hundred yards, you know, whatever it was farther West and
- 38:03Speaker 4: like went around all of that and made a very
- 38:05Speaker 4: easy Creek crossing.
- 38:06Speaker 1: And I was out, you know?
- 38:08Speaker 4: Yeah. So, um, it's like, uh, I don't know if
- 38:13Speaker 4: it's like a strategy. I just like pick the spot
- 38:15Speaker 4: and to get to that spot. That's what I had
- 38:17Speaker 4: to go through.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Makes sense. Um, and then, you know, speaking of, of
- 38:22Speaker 5: the physicality, uh, At the beginning, you said, you know, yeah,
- 38:27Speaker 5: it was kind of hard. But there were a lot
- 38:32Speaker 5: of questions about getting prepared for something like this. Can
- 38:37Speaker 5: you speak to that in terms of, you know, really
- 38:40Speaker 5: was this a pretty arduous hunt? And then, you know,
- 38:42Speaker 5: how do you get yourself ready for, even if you
- 38:46Speaker 5: weren't as far back as maybe what it looked like,
- 38:49Speaker 5: it certainly looks steep. even just your cross country or
- 38:53Speaker 5: your cross canyon to get to that buck after it
- 38:55Speaker 5: went down. Were you feeling the miles on this one
- 38:59Speaker 5: a little bit?
- 39:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't have a ton of time to hunt,
- 39:03Speaker 4: so I think we ended up killing the buck on
- 39:05Speaker 4: like day five. So it was probably not quite long
- 39:08Speaker 4: enough to really start getting worn down too bad.
- 39:12Speaker 1: I was definitely a little tired.
- 39:18Speaker 4: And, you know, a big part of what makes this
- 39:20Speaker 4: one fascinating More physical is that if you're gonna be,
- 39:24Speaker 4: you know, sleeping out of your backpack, and carrying your shelter,
- 39:29Speaker 4: carrying your sleeping bag, carrying your food, all that stuff,
- 39:34Speaker 4: you know, it's not much, but it adds, you know,
- 39:36Speaker 4: depending on how light your gear is, 10 to 20
- 39:38Speaker 4: pounds to your backpack. And all of a sudden every
- 39:41Speaker 4: step just is a lot harder. So, um, I definitely,
- 39:46Speaker 4: I go, I try to go to the gym once
- 39:49Speaker 4: a Definitely, maybe twice a week when I'm in town.
- 39:53Speaker 1: And it's called the Mountain Project. It's in Bozeman.
- 39:56Speaker 4: And their motto is sort of like they train the
- 39:59Speaker 4: uphill athlete. So people that like to go up and
- 40:02Speaker 4: down the mountains around here, whether it's on skis, bikes,
- 40:07Speaker 4: their own two feet, running, hiking, whatever it is, they
- 40:12Speaker 4: have us do things that's going to make going uphill easier.
- 40:17Speaker 4: So it's like every day is leg day in there.
- 40:20Speaker 4: I was in there this morning, and I did a
- 40:23Speaker 4: bunch of squats. I'm trying to think what else we did.
- 40:26Speaker 4: I think it was like three different kinds of squats.
- 40:30Speaker 4: It was like back squats, sumo squats, and some other ones.
- 40:34Speaker 4: My legs are going to be worn out tomorrow from
- 40:37Speaker 4: that workout. But there's no better feeling when on day three,
- 40:41Speaker 4: and this is what I tell people, is everybody has
- 40:44Speaker 4: it in them to do it on day one. But
- 40:47Speaker 4: doing it on day three and four and five gets
- 40:49Speaker 4: harder if you haven't done some kind of training for it.
- 40:53Speaker 4: And your training should look like what it's going to
- 40:55Speaker 4: be like in the field. Like all of us go
- 40:58Speaker 4: out for a hunt that's three days or five days
- 41:01Speaker 4: or maybe seven days. So you need to be able
- 41:04Speaker 4: to do it one day after another, after another, after another,
- 41:07Speaker 4: and not after just one or two days be like,
- 41:09Speaker 4: oh my God, I need to take a half day off, right?
- 41:12Speaker 4: If you only have five, that's, is that 20%? yeah
- 41:18Speaker 4: that's 20 of your um no one hunt would only
- 41:22Speaker 4: be 10 on a five-day hunt anyways 10 still a
- 41:27Speaker 4: lot you don't want to give it up one afternoon
- 41:30Speaker 4: yeah took off a whole day be 20 yep um
- 41:34Speaker 4: so yeah and and so like how best to do
- 41:38Speaker 4: it i mean if it is literally like a like
- 41:41Speaker 4: gonna be a a backcountry mule deer hunt in the
- 41:44Speaker 4: mountains is yes make every day leg day Make sure
- 41:49Speaker 4: your butt and your quads and your calves are strong.
- 41:54Speaker 4: And make sure that you have some kind of endurance.
- 41:57Speaker 4: And that doesn't mean that you have to do 20
- 41:59Speaker 4: miles at once, but the kind of endurance that lets
- 42:02Speaker 4: you go five days in a row.
- 42:04Speaker 5: No prison bods.
- 42:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think you need a prison bod.
- 42:10Speaker 7: Another.
- 42:12Speaker 4: My main elk hunting mentor, Ethan, used to always say
- 42:16Speaker 4: legs and lungs, legs and lungs. You know, that's what
- 42:19Speaker 4: gets stuff killed in the mountains. And I still believe that,
- 42:22Speaker 4: you know, if you have legs and lungs, you're going
- 42:25Speaker 4: to be able to get it done.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:27Speaker 5: And so another person, I don't know, Ivy B, Lil Slim,
- 42:35Speaker 5: wrote in. and said, I hunt the hardwoods for whitetail
- 42:40Speaker 5: and wonder what's the difference hunting mule deer out west?
- 42:48Speaker 1: Bigger country.
- 42:51Speaker 4: And that in of itself, I think, makes most of
- 42:55Speaker 4: the differences. I mean, we could get into the nuanced
- 42:57Speaker 4: differences of how mule deer act versus whitetail deer act
- 43:01Speaker 4: and maybe what they eat. I mean, a lot of
- 43:03Speaker 4: places where we hunt out west, we have both species.
- 43:07Speaker 4: The mule deer are usually like down in the riparian areas.
- 43:10Speaker 4: I mean, my house is an example of this, like
- 43:12Speaker 4: where we, our house sits. Like if you look down
- 43:14Speaker 4: the hill, you're more likely to see a white tail deer.
- 43:16Speaker 4: If you look up the hill, you're more likely to
- 43:18Speaker 4: see a mule deer. Um, you know, the browse is
- 43:26Speaker 4: probably pretty similar. Uh, like actually hunting like hardwoods.
- 43:32Speaker 1: It's like, yeah.
- 43:33Speaker 4: And the hardwoods that I hunt in Wisconsin, uh, it's
- 43:36Speaker 4: like max distance is going to be 200 yards. And
- 43:39Speaker 4: you don't see those kinds of sight lines very often
- 43:42Speaker 4: where you can actually see 200 yards. Although my little
- 43:46Speaker 4: Oak Savannah project bucks that trend. Um, but like in
- 43:51Speaker 4: the hardwoods, yeah, you're, you're a lot of times trying
- 43:54Speaker 4: to kill stuff at 50 yards and under and, uh,
- 43:57Speaker 4: mule deer hunting out West. It can happen close range.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Like you bump something as you're walking somewhere, but, again,
- 44:07Speaker 4: most people that I know and hunt like the way
- 44:10Speaker 4: I do for mule deer are going to glass something
- 44:13Speaker 4: up at, you know, out to a mile and then
- 44:18Speaker 4: make a play to get to within rifle range. Um, and,
- 44:22Speaker 4: and the range is going to be probably dictated. I
- 44:26Speaker 4: had to go through this on this hunt on the stock.
- 44:27Speaker 4: There was another ridge that would have been a lot
- 44:29Speaker 4: faster to get to, but it was going to bump
- 44:32Speaker 4: me out to like 600 plus. Um, And it actually
- 44:36Speaker 4: wasn't as later, you know, looking at it, it wasn't
- 44:39Speaker 4: as direct, like a, like a look on the hillside
- 44:43Speaker 4: that they were on. So I'm glad I went to
- 44:44Speaker 4: the other one, but, uh, just like the, that's the,
- 44:49Speaker 4: the topography itself dictated how far the shot was going
- 44:52Speaker 4: to be. You know, I got as close as I
- 44:53Speaker 4: could be without getting on the hill with them, which
- 44:56Speaker 4: at that point, you're sort of like going to walk
- 44:57Speaker 4: in there and then just hope to get a shot
- 44:59Speaker 4: when you jump them. Um, and the closest I could
- 45:02Speaker 4: get was right there at 400 yards. Um, So shot distances,
- 45:08Speaker 4: big difference. And, and yeah, there's a lot of way
- 45:10Speaker 4: to hunt, a lot of ways to hunt white tails
- 45:12Speaker 4: in the hardwoods, you know, whether you're, you know, sitting,
- 45:15Speaker 4: slipping around, there is all that. And, you know, you
- 45:19Speaker 4: could do that with mule deer too, but most of
- 45:22Speaker 4: us feel it's more efficient to glass a lot of country, find,
- 45:28Speaker 4: find a deer and then make a move.
- 45:31Speaker 5: Um, All right, well, before the next question, Phil, I'll
- 45:35Speaker 5: have you play this next clip here.
- 45:39Speaker 7: The buck batted. I got his location marked on Onyx.
- 45:45Speaker 7: And I'm trying to make the approach now. If I
- 45:48Speaker 7: can get the ridge opposing him, I should be 400
- 45:50Speaker 7: to 500 yards. 1,200 and 660. I have another ridge
- 46:05Speaker 7: that's right between me and the buck right now. The
- 46:08Speaker 7: shot's going to push it out closer to 600. I
- 46:10Speaker 7: just don't know if I'm comfortable with that. I almost
- 46:16Speaker 7: feel like it's worth going up there and checking. The
- 46:22Speaker 7: other ridge puts me just over 400. I'm going to
- 46:26Speaker 7: go for the closer shot. A little walk and walk.
- 46:32Speaker 7: worth it. Um, plus this ridge is at 600 from
- 46:37Speaker 7: the deer. It's awfully thick. I just don't know what
- 46:40Speaker 7: my shooting lane off the ridge is going to be
- 46:41Speaker 7: where the other one, I know for a fact I'll have,
- 46:45Speaker 7: it'll be clear for me.
- 46:51Speaker 4: Um, yeah.
- 46:52Speaker 5: So, so question there, you know, you, you've been looking
- 46:54Speaker 5: for your deer, you find him, uh, when you find your,
- 46:58Speaker 5: your target animal, um, and you know that clock is ticking,
- 47:05Speaker 5: how much time do you spend watching behavior, bedding them down,
- 47:10Speaker 5: getting a lay of the land, versus just, man, we
- 47:13Speaker 5: got to cut distance now?
- 47:17Speaker 1: Well, you can tell from that clip, I was in
- 47:19Speaker 1: a hurry.
- 47:21Speaker 4: I was in a rush to cut the distance and
- 47:23Speaker 4: get on them. And I think we had, I say we,
- 47:26Speaker 4: because Max was there too, I had found that buck
- 47:31Speaker 4: It's probably getting on in the morning, you know, I
- 47:33Speaker 4: don't know, 8.30, 9, 9.30, something like that. And so
- 47:38Speaker 4: those deer bedded down pretty soon after we found them.
- 47:42Speaker 4: And as soon as that happens, it's like, okay, do
- 47:46Speaker 4: the best you can to actually mark that spot on
- 47:49Speaker 4: the map with Onyx, right?
- 47:51Speaker 1: Figure that out.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Then figure out, you know, what's going to be the
- 47:55Speaker 4: best approach, what's going to be the best place to
- 47:57Speaker 4: try to get a shot on them from if they
- 47:59Speaker 4: stay there.
- 48:00Speaker 1: And then go.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Had they stayed on their feet and kept feeding longer,
- 48:05Speaker 4: I probably would have stayed and kept.
- 48:07Speaker 1: On watching them.
- 48:08Speaker 4: I mean, there's two clocks ticking. One is the one
- 48:12Speaker 4: where they're just going to like walk out of your life, right?
- 48:15Speaker 4: They go behind some ridge. You can't see them anymore. They,
- 48:18Speaker 4: you know, go up the drainage and leave it. You
- 48:20Speaker 4: can't see them anymore. There's the other one where it's
- 48:22Speaker 4: like it's public land. Someone else might be seeing them
- 48:26Speaker 4: or someone else is walking down the ridge that they're on.
- 48:28Speaker 1: And all of a sudden they bump them. Like, you
- 48:30Speaker 1: don't know.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Um, so it's, uh, you know, it's, it's a balance,
- 48:37Speaker 4: but I definitely don't, uh, you know, I'd rather be
- 48:40Speaker 4: laying there at 400 yards, getting bored, waiting for him
- 48:44Speaker 4: to stand up. Then like, you know, dilly dally my
- 48:47Speaker 4: way over there and then get there and they're not
- 48:50Speaker 4: there anymore.
- 48:51Speaker 1: So, I mean, it like the less pressure.
- 48:55Speaker 4: I can remember Randy Ulmer telling me, if you don't
- 48:58Speaker 4: know who Randy is, like, you know, one of the,
- 49:01Speaker 4: Greatest Western bull hunters ever. And he was talking about
- 49:07Speaker 4: watching deer and big bulls for days and watching what
- 49:13Speaker 4: they do, where they walk, where they sleep, where they're feeding,
- 49:16Speaker 4: how they get between the two areas until he felt like, okay,
- 49:20Speaker 4: I know exactly where I'm going to go. And that bull,
- 49:23Speaker 4: and he's an archer. So he's like, I'm going to
- 49:25Speaker 4: go right there. And that bull is going to walk
- 49:27Speaker 4: by me at, you know, less than 50 yards and
- 49:29Speaker 4: I'll kill him.
- 49:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:31Speaker 4: But, uh, you know, that's, you know, in a, in
- 49:35Speaker 4: a scenario where he felt like someone else wasn't going
- 49:38Speaker 4: to come in there and bump them out of there.
- 49:40Speaker 5: You know so so then when you're cutting the distance
- 49:44Speaker 5: like that um you get to the ridgeline that you're
- 49:48Speaker 5: you want to be at obviously you had to do
- 49:51Speaker 5: quite a lot of vert um is there a point
- 49:54Speaker 5: where you start pacing yourself a little bit thinking about
- 49:57Speaker 5: heart rate and nerves uh before you kind of crest
- 50:02Speaker 5: that ridge or settle behind your gun.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Uh For sure.
- 50:07Speaker 4: I mean, especially if they're up on their feet or
- 50:09Speaker 4: looking like they're going to get up on their feet.
- 50:11Speaker 4: I mean, they were bedded the whole time we made
- 50:13Speaker 4: the approach and slipped in there. So I didn't really
- 50:20Speaker 4: have to think about that because at that point it
- 50:23Speaker 4: seemed like I had a lot of time and I
- 50:24Speaker 4: could easily just slip in and my heart rate had
- 50:29Speaker 4: already dropped not thinking about it. But I can tell
- 50:32Speaker 4: you just like from recently being on an elk hunt,
- 50:35Speaker 4: where I was chasing elk around every single day. Like
- 50:37Speaker 4: I thought about that a lot as I was like
- 50:40Speaker 4: getting in there and you're realizing that like, okay, this
- 50:43Speaker 4: might happen. I might get a shot, start, you know,
- 50:47Speaker 4: controlling your heart rate and either moving slower or just
- 50:51Speaker 4: some deep breaths. Cause you're, you know, you're getting anxious
- 50:54Speaker 4: and excited about, you know, the proximity of elk and
- 50:58Speaker 4: just trying to calm myself down. But for that buck
- 51:02Speaker 4: didn't really have to think about it. Cause I, He
- 51:04Speaker 4: was just bedded, so we were able to slip into
- 51:06Speaker 4: that 400 yards without having to drop the heart rate.
- 51:15Speaker 5: All right. This next question comes with another clip that
- 51:21Speaker 5: came from IG on why not shoot your deer when
- 51:25Speaker 5: it's bedded. But, Phil, let's play that.
- 51:29Speaker 7: He's behind that tree.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 51:32Speaker 7: He's bedded. Okay. Now he's gonna have to wake up
- 51:37Speaker 7: and stand up. It took me about two hours to
- 51:41Speaker 7: do the stalk and then get in here and get
- 51:44Speaker 7: all situated. So my rifle's pretty much pointed at him
- 51:50Speaker 7: within a few yards. They were all bedded. A few
- 51:54Speaker 7: of the does are standing now. So the name of
- 51:56Speaker 7: the game now is just wait. I'm not a huge
- 51:59Speaker 7: fan of shooting them bedded. It certainly can be done,
- 52:04Speaker 7: but it's harder to tell where exactly the vitals are.
- 52:07Speaker 7: I'm just going to sit here, just trying to stay comfortable,
- 52:11Speaker 7: keep glassing him, and hopefully he'll stand up sooner than later.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Pretty buck.
- 52:22Speaker 4: Yeah, well, two things with that particular deer.
- 52:25Speaker 1: One, he was bedded directly behind that treetop.
- 52:31Speaker 4: So i would have had to change positions to maybe
- 52:33Speaker 4: to even get an angle you know to him um
- 52:37Speaker 4: and he was bedded in a little bit of that
- 52:39Speaker 4: uh buck brush or tobacco brush they call it so
- 52:42Speaker 4: i wasn't even really looking at that opportunity because i
- 52:44Speaker 4: felt like that stuff kind of might have been in
- 52:46Speaker 4: the way but mostly it's just because like when a
- 52:50Speaker 4: deer or an elk or whatever beds down it's like
- 52:54Speaker 4: not only are they sort of compressing their body and
- 52:56Speaker 4: their legs get into kind of a funnier position and
- 53:01Speaker 4: their shoulders roll back or forward or depending on how
- 53:05Speaker 4: their legs are, but it's not like they just go
- 53:08Speaker 4: from standing perfectly broadside and they go straight down onto
- 53:12Speaker 4: their belly, right? I mean, they might do that, but
- 53:15Speaker 4: a lot of times they're sort of canted over a
- 53:17Speaker 4: little bit, right? And their belly is showing and so
- 53:20Speaker 4: they're more like almost laying partially on their side. And so, yeah,
- 53:27Speaker 4: you can still sort of visualize where exactly the bullets
- 53:30Speaker 4: paths should be, but it just gets a little bit trickier.
- 53:34Speaker 4: And again, in that situation, like, had he been at
- 53:38Speaker 4: a hundred yards, I probably would have just shot one
- 53:41Speaker 4: right in there.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Right. Cause it's like, there's just less chance of messing
- 53:47Speaker 1: something up. Right.
- 53:49Speaker 4: I can like, pinpoint it in there at a hundred yards.
- 53:51Speaker 4: And like, I mean, if you want, you can shoot
- 53:53Speaker 4: them in the ear at a hundred yards, um, at
- 53:57Speaker 4: 400 yards. It's like, I want as big of a
- 53:59Speaker 4: target as possible and like know exactly what I'm shooting at.
- 54:02Speaker 4: And the best opportunity for that is going to come
- 54:05Speaker 4: when he's standing and broadside. Um, so yeah, that's why
- 54:10Speaker 4: I'm not shoot a deer while he's bedded. And again,
- 54:14Speaker 4: there really wasn't an opportunity on this one. But even
- 54:17Speaker 4: if he was wide out in the open, I feel
- 54:22Speaker 4: like the target's smaller. The angles of the target are
- 54:25Speaker 4: more difficult to understand.
- 54:27Speaker 5: Yeah, makes sense, man. There were quite a few questions
- 54:36Speaker 5: in general about wind and everything. You might have answered
- 54:40Speaker 5: this a little bit off the top. But as you
- 54:43Speaker 5: were laying there on that hillside, were you talking to
- 54:47Speaker 5: Max at all about, you know, the, the feeling that
- 54:50Speaker 5: there could be a little bit of a wind going
- 54:53Speaker 5: cross Canyon, um, between you and that deer before shooting?
- 54:57Speaker 1: Was it, man, we, we talked about it a lot.
- 55:00Speaker 4: It's just like the, it literally felt like it was
- 55:03Speaker 4: coming straight on at us and straight on or straight
- 55:07Speaker 4: from us to the deer. You know, you shouldn't get much,
- 55:11Speaker 4: you know, left to right deviation. Um, but as we
- 55:14Speaker 4: can see, there was some, um, yeah. Cause I guess
- 55:20Speaker 4: that's like a one MOA.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Wind, right? 400 yards.
- 55:24Speaker 4: It was about four inches, maybe five inches.
- 55:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 55:28Speaker 4: I can't remember much, man. No, it doesn't, you know,
- 55:32Speaker 4: I mean, uh, that mule deer is, you know, a
- 55:35Speaker 4: little bit bigger than a whitetail, not much. Um, so,
- 55:39Speaker 4: you know, honestly, they're, You know, they've got like what,
- 55:41Speaker 4: probably a 10 inch circle roughly for vitals. And yeah,
- 55:46Speaker 4: you can clearly see in the video that both my shots,
- 55:50Speaker 4: I can't remember now, which I think they go right.
- 55:52Speaker 4: I think the first shot he's facing left and I
- 55:56Speaker 4: hit him a little back and then he turns, he's
- 55:58Speaker 4: facing the other direction.
- 55:58Speaker 1: I ended up hitting him in the neck.
- 56:02Speaker 5: Yeah, we can actually play that clip now. Maybe a
- 56:21Speaker 5: little low, but I think it was a hard shot.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:56Speaker 4: I mean, that's why I had to go and check
- 56:57Speaker 4: that zero, man. Cause like we had all, we had
- 57:00Speaker 4: two hours plus to like set up the shooting position.
- 57:04Speaker 4: So I was extremely comfortable. We had moved all the
- 57:07Speaker 4: rocks out of the way. Like everything was just solid
- 57:11Speaker 4: as could be. Um, and then to sort of miss
- 57:15Speaker 4: like that, right.
- 57:15Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 57:16Speaker 4: It was, it was like, what's going on here?
- 57:19Speaker 1: You know?
- 57:20Speaker 4: And so we had just, we had definitely discussed the
- 57:22Speaker 4: wind a bunch, but like every time we're sitting there
- 57:24Speaker 4: feeling it, it just felt like it was just coming
- 57:26Speaker 4: right at us. And again, it's kind of like, it's tricky.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Cause that's, there's, that's a Canyon for you.
- 57:32Speaker 7: Right.
- 57:32Speaker 4: And so maybe it was right there at the muzzle,
- 57:36Speaker 4: but then, you know, 20 or 30 yards out from that,
- 57:39Speaker 4: it was blown left or right, you know? Um, so yeah,
- 57:43Speaker 4: we just, we just couldn't really feel it that it was,
- 57:46Speaker 4: it was going to push, push that much left to right.
- 57:50Speaker 5: Yeah. It's crazy how much it can move, man. And you,
- 57:53Speaker 5: and you, you are one of the more, I'd say this,
- 57:56Speaker 5: if you weren't here, you're one of the more methodical
- 57:59Speaker 5: shooters I've, I've been around too. Um, and I think
- 58:02Speaker 5: it just goes to show that those cross Canyon shots
- 58:05Speaker 5: can be really tricky because so much is happening between
- 58:09Speaker 5: you and the animal that it just doesn't make, make
- 58:12Speaker 5: sense sometimes. Um, But Buck is down. I mean, the
- 58:16Speaker 5: good thing is that you stayed on scope. You had
- 58:19Speaker 5: a good follow-up shot.
- 58:23Speaker 4: Speaking of that, let's just make another comment on.
- 58:27Speaker 1: I didn't even think about this for the suppressor.
- 58:30Speaker 4: It's like staying on scope, staying on target for follow-up shots,
- 58:35Speaker 4: seeing what your shots are doing. At 400 yards.
- 58:39Speaker 4: With that setup with the, with the, when I'm going
- 58:42Speaker 4: to attribute this to the suppressor, but like I was
- 58:44Speaker 4: watching my bullets hit him and man, that is huge Intel.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Cause what if it was like, you know, what if
- 58:52Speaker 4: both of them hit way low and I'm like, okay,
- 58:56Speaker 4: obviously like my dope is wrong.
- 58:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 58:59Speaker 4: Well, if you know, they both hit low, it's like, okay,
- 59:02Speaker 4: we'll make the adjustment to hit 10 inches higher and
- 59:05Speaker 4: shoot again.
- 59:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 59:06Speaker 4: But if your gun is bucking so much, that you're
- 59:10Speaker 4: losing that sight picture and you don't know where you're hitting,
- 59:13Speaker 4: then that's when stuff gets Western because you're like, oh
- 59:17Speaker 4: my gosh, I've waited all, I've put all this into this.
- 59:22Speaker 4: Now I have my opportunity. It's not going my way.
- 59:24Speaker 4: And you can get rattled really easily. And the next
- 59:28Speaker 4: thing you know, you burn up all 10 rounds of
- 59:30Speaker 4: ammo that you brought with you and he's still walking
- 59:32Speaker 4: around on the hillside. Yeah.
- 59:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it's a debate right now in comp shooting,
- 59:41Speaker 5: suppressors versus brakes, right? Because a lot of being able
- 59:47Speaker 5: to track your bullet going through the air, right, has
- 59:50Speaker 5: to do with whether or not you're reacting to the
- 59:52Speaker 5: concussion that a brake causes. and cause right so you're
- 59:55Speaker 5: talking about recoil management and a brake does a little
- 59:57Speaker 5: bit better job but your ability to keep your eyes
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: open and watch that thing go through the air man
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: the suppressor you can't beat it and you're not really
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: when you flint you know and i don't mean flinch
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: when pulling the trigger but when you flinch on recoil
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: you're not really reacting to the recoil gun it's a
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: 65 prc right i think.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: It's yeah i think it's more the sound and the.
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: Concussion concussion Right. Yeah. So it's, it's a really good point.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: I mean, I think that's why my girls are good
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: shooters is because they've never shot a gun that scares them.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: They've never had to.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Deal with that.
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: Maybe a little bit on like shooting a 20 gauge shotgun,
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: but like with rifles.
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: They're as calm as can be.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: Cause they're not like, they're not scared of the recoil
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: or the bang, the concussion or whatever it might be.
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: That's great. Um, so buck is down. Uh, What's going
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: through your mind immediately post-shot?
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Pumped.
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: We were close enough in those mountains to town, and
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: it was early enough in the afternoon where once that
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: buck was down, we started figuring out what it was
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: going to take to hike over to him, butcher him,
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: film all of it, and then hike him out. That
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: we would probably be able to have pizza and beer.
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: We'd be pushing it. We're going to come in right
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: at closing time. But more than likely, instead of eating
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: another rehydrated meal, we're going to be eating pizza and beer.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: Did you?
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I slept in a hotel.
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: In a bed with sheets. Which is, you know, I think.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: It's funny because you always think about that you really
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: want that. But honestly, it's a better story. And in
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: the end, it ends up probably being more fun to
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: go back to camp, eat whatever you got. Maybe we
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: had some beers there or not. I don't know. But
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: you make a fire. You celebrate there. And that's honestly
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: probably a better story to tell later. Then you're like, well, yeah.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: And we just rushed out of there and made it
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: to a hotel and pizza and beer, you know, cause
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: we're all so soft that that's, that's what we need,
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: you know? Uh, but yeah, just like, just pumped, you know,
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: when it, when it happens and it, and it all,
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: it all comes through, you want to, uh, you want
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: to get over there and get your hands on him. And, uh,
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: you know, it was, even though it was early, it
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: was late enough that, and it turned out so that
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: we got to the truck, maybe, I don't know, 30
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: minutes after dark. And, uh, I don't know, hiking around
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: in those mountains off trail. It's, uh, it's always nicer
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: to do that in the daylight.
- 1:02:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: And, uh, he was on a pretty steep hillside. How
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: long does it take for you to break down a
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: mule deer? You know, you had Max there. Was he
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: helping with that process much?
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Yeah, he helped.
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: Um, I always figure for a bull elk, it's about
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: two hours. Um, you know, so for a mule deer,
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: it's honestly probably not that much faster. Yeah. It's smaller,
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: but you sort of still have all the same parts
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: that you have to deal with.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: So I don't know, 90 minutes to two hours.
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: To get them, excuse me, to get them actually in
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: game bags and, you know, in the pack. Um, so yeah,
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: not too bad, you know, and it all takes longer
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: when we're filming that. That's, that's what really adds time
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: is that, uh, You can't rush through it. You know,
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: you got to give the camera operator time to get
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: the shots that they want to get. Sure.
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: Any idea how much your pack weighed once you got
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: loaded up?
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: Max helped, you know, pack some meat out too. It
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: wasn't too, too bad. If I just had to throw
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: a number out there, 70.
- 1:03:48Speaker 6: Hmm.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: Very manageable, you know, like enough that you like feel
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: the strain on your hips a little bit and your
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: knees a little bit, you know, when you're coming off
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: of a steep hillside. Um, but you know, I packed
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: the trekking poles around everywhere, although I only had one
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: that was in working order, uh, for that pack out.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: But, uh, Yeah.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: I mean, just enough that, you know, like you're, you're
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: carrying a pack and you know, the, the hips are
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: going to hurt a little bit when you, when you
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: get to the bottom, but definitely not a hundred pounds. Um,
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: I think once I get to a hundred, I'm strongly
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: considering like making two fifties versus one, one hundred. Um,
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: I just know too many people that have backs that are, uh,
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: going to probably be a problem for the rest of
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: their lives. And a lot of it came from, and
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: maybe it wasn't packing meat. Maybe it was from, you know,
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: shoveling too big and heavy as snow at one time
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: or whatever it was. But like, I don't want that
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: problem in my life until I die. Like I want
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: to have a good strong back. And so I got
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: no problem going back twice.
- 1:05:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Saving my back.
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: Um, uh, uh, I thought a pretty thoughtful question. Um, Derek,
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: the fancy caveman wrote, uh, can you do a deep dive, uh,
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: on putting the food in the dead deer's mouth?
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Oh, uh, sure.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: Um, I can't remember exactly where I picked that up.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: It was definitely at the original elk camp that I
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: guided at in Colorado. Man, I wish I could remember
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: like who exactly brought that to my attention, but, um,
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: I think at the time when I learned about it,
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: I think I was looking for a way to, you know,
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: maybe respect the animal a little bit. Or like in Europe,
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: a big thing is they, you know, they put, you
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: always see the boughs of, you know, usually it's like
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: a spruce branch or something on the animal. And if
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: you watch the Latvia episodes, you'll see that a lot
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: of it is like to cover up the wound. Like
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: there in Europe, at least where I've been in Europe,
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: it's like a sign of disrespect to like take pictures
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: of the wound. Like they want that animal to look,
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: you know, as much as it was when it was alive. Not,
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: I mean, not really recreating it being alive, but just
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: like that wound is somehow disrespectful to show it. So
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: they cover that up. And again, I don't know where
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: I picked it up from, but it was just sort
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: of like, Hey, if you're like sort of moving on
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: from this world that we're, we're at now, and you're
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: going to where dead deer go to, deer heaven, like
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: here's a little snack for the road ahead. I think
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: no matter what you do, I think the real thing
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: that you get out of it and that it does
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: for everybody is that it just slows everything down for
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: a second and makes you think about it and whether
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: it lets you just look around a little bit and
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: appreciate the country you're in, or just say thanks for
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: the animal for being there, or thanks to the big
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: game biologists that do all the work to have those
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: animals there.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Whatever it is, I.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: Always regret it when we kill something, and then we
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: rush out of that situation as fast as we can.
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: Someone's like, okay, go get the can-am, and you're going
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: to chop it up, and blah, blah, blah, blah, and
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: we'll have pizza and beer in no time, right? It's
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: like there's no reason to rush out of there. Like,
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: enjoy it, you know, like soak it in. You're going
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: to be gone from that place. You may never go
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: back to that same Ridge, you know, look around. Um,
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: and I think that that's now I realize that that's
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: kind of what that does is by just taking a
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: moment to, you know, think about that as it just,
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: it just kind of slows everything down a little bit
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: and you get to, um, just get a little bit more,
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: add a little bit more to the experience.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: That's great.
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: Um, That does it for questions. Anything you'd want to
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: finalize here? No, man.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Get out there and go hunting. That's all. Figure out
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: a way to do it.
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: And yeah, don't let having to buy expensive gear keep
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: you from doing it. And don't let stupid internet keep
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: you from doing it.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Like Instagram.
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: Instagram.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Quit scrolling and.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: Figure out a way to buy a pair of boots
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: and a gun so you can get out there and
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: go hunting.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: That's great. But you got one last clip.
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: Yeah, there's one last clip. I think it's just, man,
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: it's a good headspace that I think we should all
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: be in.
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: This is a surprise. I don't know what Phil's going
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: to play now.
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: I was just thinking about how heavy my pack was
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: starting to feel.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: Shoulders are getting a little sore.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Hips are feeling it.
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: Still got a couple miles. to go to the truck.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: But then I thought, man, how lucky am I and
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: how lucky are we that we get to just do
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: this for fun and we have this opportunity for everybody
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: and enjoy the public lands and these hunting opportunities and
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: all the things to be grateful for when we get
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: to do this. not just the public lands, you know,
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: your family that lets you go and do this, an
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: employer in my case that pays me to go do
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: this and have a great time, and the wildlife managers
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: that make sure that we have these abundant populations of
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: game that we get to hunt. There's going to be
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: a lot of people I'll forget to say thank you to,
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: but instead of complaining about how heavy the pack feels,
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: it's better just to think about how grateful I am that, uh,
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: I even have the opportunity to have.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: A heavy pack like this.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: Thanks for watching. We'll see you next time.
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: Slippery. Almost went down hard there.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: In my old age, Garrett, I'm losing my balance a
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: little bit.
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's, you know, that is a good headspace to
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: be in to, you know, always remember how fortunate we
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: all are. I've tried to bring that around to tell
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: me what you think about this. I've been doing some
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: announcing I was telling you about the varsity volleyball games
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: here at Bozeman High. And it seems like for some
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: reason people have quit singing the national anthem. Instead, we
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: just listen to like a recording or we listen to
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: if there's a singer that comes to sing it, we
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: listen to them sing it, which in some cases I agree.
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: In that case, maybe it's better just to listen. But like,
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: I feel like growing up, We always sang the national anthem.
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: And so, and I feel like it's kind of in
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: the same headspace. It's like when you sing the national anthem,
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: you're like, oh yeah, that's right. Like we're all Americans
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: and we're sort of like you're, it takes a second
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: to be like, oh yeah. Even though we all don't
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: always think the same way and things aren't going, you know,
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: the way we think they should be going or whatever.
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: It's like, we should still all appreciate, you know, being
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: Americans and getting to live in this country. Cause it's
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: pretty sweet compared to a lot of other places where
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: you could be in situations you could be in. And
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: so I think singing that national anthem is a good
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: way to remind us of all of that. And, uh,
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: same thing there when you're out hunting, the hunting sucks
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: and you're not seeing them. It's like, man, just, just like,
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: think about how like, it's pretty awesome. Cause again, like
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: I can compare it to Europe. Like, in Latvia at
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: least like they don't have like even even it's probably
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: not even two percent of like sort of the vastness
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: of what we have especially in the Rocky Mountains and
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: I would even say in a lot of places back
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: in the east where they have large tracks and national
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: forests where you can literally walk for miles like it's
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: not a thing in Latvia sure to go walk for
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: miles um And, uh, it's, um, it's something that we, yeah,
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: we should all appreciate and remember, you know, that it's, uh,
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: it's a real privilege.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: Yeah, man. It's a good reminder for all of us.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: There's always something to bitch about.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: But, uh, life is pretty good on the side. Um,
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: and you're right. We always did sing along to the
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: national anthem before.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: So I'm, I'm trying to bring it back.
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: I asked him to sing along when I, uh, I,
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: I did announce a game on Saturday.
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: Did they?
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: I heard a little bit of it.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: A lot of people are going to be coming back
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: because it's going to be the same parents coming back
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: to see the same players. And so I'm hoping it's
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: going to catch on. Because honestly, I looked at the
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: words beforehand. I'm like, I know it pretty good, but
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: I should brush up a little bit, right? Because it's
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: a lot easier to sing when you know what the
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: words are. And it's easy to forget the lyrics sometimes.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: Do you think you could sing it right now?
- 1:13:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Every single word. No problem.
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so, man. Like, but, you know, I
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: went to a one room schoolhouse where, you know, that's
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: how we would start a lot of our day.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: Raising the flag.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: I think, you know, when I don't sing it now,
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: we're way off topic. But, you know, not all of
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: us have like a singing voice like Phil.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: You might be getting judged by the, you know, the
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: little ladies standing next to you.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: But that's fine. Like, we're all in it together.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: And, you know, there's great singers, there's bad ones, and
- 1:13:41Speaker 4: then there's everybody in between, you know. And it doesn't
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: really matter how it sounds. I think it's just like,
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: you know, it's like a show of community.
- 1:13:49Speaker 7: Sure.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: I'm sure there's a hunting parallel there. Yeah.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Well, I think it's just about being grateful for what
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: we have.
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: That's great thank you all for listening and watching if
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: you went to youtube to watch this and uh hopefully
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: you like the video and um yeah I just got
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: done filming an elk hunt that uh will probably be
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: a long episode with all kinds of action that you'll
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: be able to watch next year um what is that
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: it that's it nothing else from you Phil I think
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: we're good to sign off.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Y'all keep it real. Go hunting.
