- 0:00Eric: Hello Andrea.
- 0:01Eric: Today we are going to be talking about the 2013 Hallmark mystery called the Mystery Cruise.
- 0:09Eric: Is this going to be a exciting, fun cruise, or are we getting tossed overboard?
- 0:19Andrea: I can't wait to find out.
- 0:22Eric: This podcast was created by fans or fans, and it's not affiliated with or sponsored by Hallmark or the Hallmark channel.
- 0:31Eric: This is Eric.
- 0:35Andrea: This is Andrea.
- 0:36Eric: And this is Hallmark Mysteries and more.
- 0:40Andrea: Alright, so the Mystery Cruise.
- 0:42Andrea: I have a longer description in case you haven't seen this movie.
- 0:46Andrea: It originally aired again, which we said is 2013, so it's been a few years and I don't see this one air regularly on the Hallmark mystery channel, like ever.
- 0:57Eric: I honestly, when you sent it to me I was like oh, a new mystery coming our way because I had never heard of it.
- 1:03Eric: And I looked it up and it was in in the Hallmark website.
- 1:07Eric: I was like all excited and I almost posted something about another new mystery and I'm glad I did not when I finally saw, because it seemed dated, so I caught myself.
- 1:17Andrea: Well, let's, let's dive into this cruise.
- 1:19Andrea: So the Mystery Cruise centers around best friends and impeding impending business partners Alvira Mahane, which is played by Gail O'Grady, a lottery winner turned amateur sleuth, and Reagan Riley, who's played by Michelle Harrison, who is a private investigator After rescuing the diamond collared hooch of a wealthy socialite, played by Carol Hagan's Clark.
- 1:44Andrea: The two heroines set off with their spouses to join Reagan's mom, nora Riley, who's played by Colleen Winton, a world famous mystery writer, on a luxurious, luxurious three-day cruise around the San Juan Island off the coast of Washington.
- 2:00Andrea: The cruise serves as the setting for a mystery game created to promote the release of Nora's latest book.
- 2:06Andrea: As the boat calmly set sail, everyone is enjoying getting into character, especially Alvira, who may or may not be the game's murderous.
- 2:16Andrea: But trouble waters lie ahead when Alvira gets a hunch that a real killer may be on board and, together with Reagan, the pair teams up to solve the high seas.
- 2:27Andrea: Who done it?
- 2:29Eric: That is definitely a longer one, especially when you compare it to the gilded Newport one which the person rode on their way out to Quiznos to get lunch.
- 2:39Andrea: I mean, after reading this, I'm like this actually answer some of the questions I might have had about some of these characters.
- 2:46Andrea: So I actually really appreciated this description and now I'm putting together pieces that I didn't quite catch watching the movie.
- 2:55Eric: Oh, there's a lot of that, there's a lot of that in this movie.
- 2:58Eric: I will say Well this is.
- 3:02Andrea: I also just wanted to throw in.
- 3:03Andrea: Mary Higgins Clark wrote this, the book called the Santa Cruz, which this movie is based on.
- 3:10Andrea: So that showed right at the beginning.
- 3:13Eric: She wrote it with her daughter, the Carol Higgins Clark, and I tried.
- 3:19Eric: When we said we're doing this and we just decided to do this sort of a last minute, I read as much as I could over the weekend of that Santa Cruz.
- 3:30Eric: So a little bit different, but a little little little take on that, not too much though.
- 3:39Andrea: I love it.
- 3:40Andrea: Well, what was your overall plot enjoyment?
- 3:42Andrea: How'd you like this movie?
- 3:44Eric: I somehow I'm like a 3.5 and I don't know how I got there.
- 3:50Andrea: Really oh yeah, like you're surprised, you liked it that much, or really?
- 3:56Eric: Yes.
- 3:57Andrea: Why.
- 3:59Eric: Well, I was gonna wait for yours, but we can go into mine, okay, because this movie was completely chaotic and I did not know what the hell was going on.
- 4:08Eric: I was trying to figure out wait, what are they doing?
- 4:11Eric: The whole concept of the game.
- 4:13Eric: That's, like you know, the mystery within the mystery when they're playing their characters and their role playing.
- 4:19Eric: Like I couldn't figure out the game.
- 4:21Eric: I kept trying to go.
- 4:22Eric: I don't understand the game that they're all playing and, like I said, I was so confused.
- 4:28Eric: I did so much rewiring, like what did I just watch?
- 4:31Eric: And I kept going back and at the end I'm like I should hate this mystery because it was so incoherent.
- 4:39Eric: Yet I had so much fun watching the thing that I was like I'd watch it again and maybe I'd find out a little more and understood a little more.
- 4:48Eric: So it I guess I chaotic that's the only way I can describe this movie.
- 4:55Eric: We we reviewed wedding planner mystery last year and then we talked around Oliver the director, who gave a little behind the scenes and he said how they had the script.
- 5:06Eric: That just didn't make sense and they just put it in there and they were ad-libbing and throwing things in just like a movie out of it.
- 5:13Eric: I kind of had a sense of that.
- 5:15Eric: But, like I say, somehow, some way it worked for me.
- 5:20Eric: I can't explain it, I really can't explain it.
- 5:23Eric: But what about you?
- 5:27Andrea: Well, it really worked for me.
- 5:28Andrea: I give it a four and a half out of five.
- 5:30Andrea: Whoa, I love this movie.
- 5:32Eric: So you understood what was going on.
- 5:34Andrea: Okay, so I watched this maybe a year or so ago, so I've seen every Hallmark mystery movie.
- 5:41Andrea: I have been there since the inception, like I've been a Hallmark mystery fan.
- 5:46Eric: Wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 5:47Eric: Are you saying you saw this like back in 2013 and then saw it again, or Potentially yes, but I remember it a couple of years ago.
- 5:57Andrea: So I looked to see if I was like I'm pretty sure I reviewed this on my Instagram page a few years ago and sure enough I did and I gave it four out of five stars.
- 6:05Andrea: And then, having watched it again, I think some of this clicked into place.
- 6:09Andrea: But then, after reading that description, I wish I would have read that before watching it a second time and then I think even more would have clicked into place for me.
- 6:16Andrea: But I really loved it.
- 6:18Andrea: I think this had a beautiful like bones to set up an ongoing series and I know that was their intention.
- 6:26Andrea: It didn't work.
- 6:27Andrea: But again in 2013, I was kind of looking up to see what was that first mystery series, and it was the garage sale mysteries.
- 6:33Andrea: From everything that I researched and found, and this one came out similar timing.
- 6:38Andrea: So my guess is this and the garage sales were kind of like, hey, what's gonna stick?
- 6:44Andrea: And yeah, and so this one did not fly.
- 6:48Andrea: And when I was looking through some of the IMDB comments after I watched it just to kind of get a feel, I'm like, well, I love this.
- 6:55Andrea: Do you have other people?
- 6:57Andrea: Or why did this fly.
- 6:57Andrea: It had a pretty low rating, like a 5.4, which I'm assuming, and then after reading people's comments, it was exactly as you said.
- 7:05Andrea: People were confused and I didn't know that she was a lottery winner turn sleuth.
- 7:11Andrea: You know stuff that I read in that description.
- 7:13Andrea: I'm like they can have a better job informing us of these characters.
- 7:18Eric: And again people didn't know who's husband.
- 7:21Andrea: But briefly, like enough, where you're like, if you, you know, you're kind of like getting your you know cup of tea to sit down and watch it, you missed that.
- 7:27Andrea: And then you miss who this character is, and then even the spouses you're kind of like, wait, are they married?
- 7:32Andrea: Are they dating?
- 7:32Andrea: He just kind of comes in and you're like, oh, I guess that's a virus, husband, I didn't put that together.
- 7:38Andrea: You know things like that they could have done better.
- 7:40Andrea: And same with the mom.
- 7:41Andrea: I knew it was the mom.
- 7:42Andrea: I didn't realize the mom was mystery writer and that that was her book launch.
- 7:46Andrea: That was going on.
- 7:47Andrea: I didn't catch that.
- 7:49Andrea: I knew, you know she was the, you know the mother and that she was the writer, but I didn't catch that that was supposed to be her big.
- 7:56Andrea: Hey, here's my new book, which is super clever.
- 7:58Andrea: I mean, if you're a mystery writer, I love that premise of doing this type of event.
- 8:02Andrea: So I again, I had fun.
- 8:04Andrea: I think this is one where you have more fun the more you watch it, because you can kind of flesh out some of these characters 100% agree.
- 8:12Eric: Like I say, I think the 3.5 is not bad because, like I said, I will say 3.5 thoroughly enjoyed it.
- 8:20Eric: We'll watch again.
- 8:21Eric: I agree with you because I went back and I watched it and then I went back and I could say I had to do a lot of rewinding.
- 8:29Eric: And then I went back after I was started reading the book and for that same exact thing you said.
- 8:35Eric: In the book it talks about how she won the lottery and she's such a huge fan of the writer that she sort of forces herself into a relationship with them and just sort of you know it doesn't, we didn't get that.
- 8:49Eric: Right, you didn't get that from the movie.
- 8:50Eric: But then I went back and I was watching the movie and then I saw the one line where the people are like, oh, that's a viral, the lottery winner.
- 8:58Eric: Like just sort of an offhand comment, which, you're right, it would have built so much more into it.
- 9:03Eric: But I totally, totally understand why you gave it your 4.5, why you're a strong thing, Because it is seriously so enjoyable, so fun to watch my thing.
- 9:17Eric: And the only reason why I'm at the 3.5, is because and we'll get into, I guess, a little bit forward that the actual mystery itself just really kind of made no sense, Right, and I did not get far enough in the book.
- 9:31Eric: I do know that the book is a big.
- 9:35Eric: There's like 200 people on it and it's going through and this is a really rich guy bought the boat and he's doing this publicity thing where all these VIPs get to come on and do this cruise.
- 9:49Eric: His nephew brings these convicts on who are, which I'm guessing the gambling guy is sort of the equivalent of that.
- 9:59Eric: So I got to see a little bit of sort of the bones of where the mystery was from the book and, I'll be honest, I was not so into the book, where I'm going to keep going now that we've got there.
- 10:10Eric: It was OK.
- 10:13Eric: Her writing, I don't know, have you ever read any of her books?
- 10:17Andrea: I have not.
- 10:18Andrea: I've heard of her, but I haven't read any Right?
- 10:19Eric: I've heard of her too.
- 10:20Eric: Writing's a little simple for me and I know in the cozy mysteries there tend to be not the most complex.
- 10:30Eric: We're not doing Shakespeare kind of thing here but it was pretty simple for me in this one, but it was still.
- 10:43Eric: Like I say, this movie, though, I thought was just really good.
- 10:47Eric: The other thing was Michelle Harrison.
- 10:50Eric: Do you know her Because she's been in a few Hallmark things.
- 10:54Andrea: I recognize her.
- 10:55Andrea: I recognize a lot of these characters that you know.
- 10:57Eric: I didn't recognize her.
- 10:58Eric: I do not know why she did not cannonball into a lead, because she was fantastic.
- 11:04Eric: I mean, she's everything you look at for a Hallmark star.
- 11:07Eric: She is it, and I don't know why she wasn't one of the main Hallmark people, why she's not up there with the Nicky DeLosius, the Jill Wagner's, the Ellie Sweeney's and stuff.
- 11:21Eric: She just seems like she has all of that.
- 11:25Andrea: The other thing is to be like the peer speculation of like this Maybe this was the movie and it didn't do well.
- 11:30Andrea: So then Hallmark just scrapped it, thinking it was her, which it wasn't.
- 11:34Eric: I don't think it was her, but that would be maybe their thought process, I don't know.
- 11:39Eric: And then Gil Grady, which I had to look up because you had that like sort of Brooklyn-y, I guess, or one of the borough accents.
- 11:49Eric: Now I had to look up and see if that was where she was from, and she's actually from my hometown, detroit.
- 11:56Eric: So she clearly was just putting that on.
- 12:00Eric: But how did you like her character?
- 12:03Eric: Because she was a lot right.
- 12:06Eric: Oh, I love her, but yeah.
- 12:09Andrea: I love the characters that tend to be a lot.
- 12:11Andrea: For the most part those don't bother me and I know those bother other people because there was the movie the paging Mr Darcy, that sister who a lot of people said was a lot.
- 12:20Andrea: I loved her, like I tend to be.
- 12:23Andrea: That is a fun character for me.
- 12:25Andrea: I think they bring some lightheartedness.
- 12:26Andrea: So I didn't mind her and I would say she was fine and I would have loved to see that duo.
- 12:34Andrea: There was the book that I used to read and I don't remember the series name and I cannot, if anyone knows, let me know, send us a DM because I cannot figure out for the life of me.
- 12:42Andrea: It was two hairstylists based in Texas and they would solve crimes and I don't know what happened.
- 12:48Andrea: Like I gave away all these books and it was an ongoing series and I cannot remember what they were called.
- 12:53Andrea: But these two leads seem very similar to that book in terms of like their personalities.
- 12:59Andrea: So I enjoy like a fun, bubbly one and then one who has to kind of keep her on track to make sure.
- 13:04Andrea: Hey, this is what we're trying to do and I like that dynamic in kind of that duo for mysteries, because I think it plays well for those who don't want something that's super intense, but want a little lightheartedness with the mysteries.
- 13:16Andrea: I feel like Homeark should do something like that again, just because that that is a fun dynamic with friends.
- 13:22Eric: Well, oh yeah, the friends go say kind of the cases, mr Lane more like girlfriends.
- 13:27Andrea: Is that right?
- 13:28Eric: but doing the buddy, the buddy one.
- 13:30Eric: And I will say that it's kudos to Gil Grady, because to be able to act that character, who I think so easily could be annoying, to be able to know how to do it in a way that we both found her endearing, I think it's just a testament to skill.
- 13:50Eric: To play someone who is kind of silly and soft morick.
- 13:57Eric: You think that that would be the easy thing to do, right, but that's got to be like the hardest thing to do, because to do it in a credible way, I think that's this fantastic acting which probably does not get the attention.
- 14:14Eric: You know, a more serious thing role is probably looked at more like oh, that is good acting, but to be able to play silly, almost like hijinx-y, credibly, I thought was really good.
- 14:31Eric: And then the other thing about this movie that I miss and you see it kind of on some of the older hallmark things were the transitions.
- 14:41Andrea: Oh, I looked it down to you.
- 14:42Andrea: I loved them.
- 14:44Eric: So cool Like they show.
- 14:45Eric: So you know obviously we're audio here, but you got to watch the movie just for that where they'll show, like in a book, the picture of the boat as it opens up and then it transforms into the actual boat, like the transitions were just really cool and hallmark does not invest in those at all anymore.
- 15:09Andrea: And it's crazy.
- 15:09Andrea: It felt like it was a chapter, like here's the new chapter, the next chapter of the movie, and it was just it really.
- 15:15Andrea: I felt it really brought you in.
- 15:18Eric: And what's crazy is the guy's name who did who's like the director of photography.
- 15:21Eric: His name's like Peter Benison or something.
- 15:26Eric: So I reached out to Peter Benson because you know how he directs, and this was like so early on I'm like, hey, were you the director of photography?
- 15:33Eric: Because just looking at the name he's like no, I've gotten that before, the name's very similar.
- 15:39Eric: But I wish I could take credit.
- 15:40Eric: But that was not me.
- 15:42Andrea: But it was like it was really cool.
- 15:45Eric: Speaking of Peter Benson, this was his second, I believe, hallmark movie.
- 15:49Eric: He was in the was it A Bride for Christmas?
- 15:54Eric: Or, yeah, a Bride for Christmas with Andrew Walker and Ariel Cribill or Harvey the announcer last name, which was just on the other day and for an old hallmark movie.
- 16:05Eric: I don't know how you feel that one totally holds up.
- 16:07Eric: For me as well.
- 16:09Eric: I think it was a great movie, but we're not reviewing that.
- 16:12Eric: But Peter Benson I thought was a lot of fun in this getting to see him and his character, and he was there.
- 16:20Eric: Were we're going to go back to the chaos.
- 16:23Eric: There is the whole plot of this murder mystery role play thing that's taking place.
- 16:30Eric: Then there's the whole thing of the Peter Benson with his little crime that he's solving, and then there's the whole one that the main characters, alvira and Reagan, are solving, the almost murder and like there's so much just going on in this movie that it is crazy and you don't see that in a movie these days.
- 16:57Eric: In hallmark, right In one of their mysteries they pretty much have the main thing going and that's it.
- 17:04Eric: We talked to the garage sale which had the little story about the fixing up the Mustang a little side story thrown in, but all in all, it's the case and that's it.
- 17:16Eric: And this one had so many layers of chaos Great.
- 17:22Andrea: Wow, I agree.
- 17:22Andrea: I mean that was kind of my mystery minute as well as this movie.
- 17:26Andrea: You know the main mystery that's happening.
- 17:29Andrea: You are let in as a viewer.
- 17:31Andrea: You know who the murderous is.
- 17:33Andrea: You know they are very or trying to be.
- 17:35Andrea: You know who she is.
- 17:37Andrea: They don't they don't hide that from you.
- 17:40Eric: They kind of did Like I'm like, did they really try to kill him or was it like Alvira seeing things Like I did not know for sure she was trying?
- 17:52Andrea: to kill him for the longest time.
- 17:54Eric: I didn't know if it's coincidence, no chaos.
- 17:58Andrea: Okay, no it.
- 17:59Andrea: To me it was very obvious that she was trying to kill him, because I mean the whole thing, like she had the bloody finger.
- 18:05Andrea: That's what Alvira noticed.
- 18:06Andrea: Like you were supposed to kind of like the smuggling, like putting the pillow over the face Like poison and the tea.
- 18:13Andrea: So many different times she tried to kill him.
- 18:15Andrea: She was wanted by the FBI and had different you found that out halfway through.
- 18:20Andrea: How did she not pick?
- 18:22Eric: out.
- 18:22Eric: I thought it was like coincidences, like they were being very obvious she accidentally did the champagne and then the tea, Like did they actually show her poison or was it?
- 18:34Andrea: just a plot, no, but her reaction was just like but that's the thing they like.
- 18:38Eric: that's why I was still like is she or isn't she?
- 18:41Andrea: Oh, that's funny.
- 18:41Andrea: Okay, well, maybe obviously she was, and she's poisoning the guy.
- 18:47Eric: I don't know how she plans and get being on a boat and getting away with poisoning her husband, but whatever, it doesn't matter.
- 18:55Andrea: This is that was the mystery.
- 18:56Andrea: That was like a foot.
- 18:58Andrea: That was the main mystery.
- 18:59Andrea: And then you know you had the mystery of the actual game that they're playing and you know you kind of had that in the background as well.
- 19:06Andrea: Plus you had the gambling thing I mean.
- 19:08Andrea: So you had so many fun little storylines throw it in that I think that that was enjoyable for me.
- 19:12Andrea: Again, could they have fleshed that out like Peter Benson's character?
- 19:16Andrea: Was he a policeman?
- 19:18Andrea: Is that his Okay?
- 19:20Eric: Yeah, he was head of crimes.
- 19:22Andrea: They didn't lay that out until near the end where I was like, okay, he actually can do something about what he's trying to solve, because I was kind of like, is this just a citizen arrest type of situation and he's just trying to monitoring these people or is this like he legit, has like information?
- 19:37Andrea: So again, this is where I didn't know that you didn't know the murderer thing.
- 19:41Andrea: You know we had these different elements because there was so much, I think, thrown in here that you, it's easy to miss something, very easy to miss something.
- 19:50Eric: But let's get back to you.
- 19:52Eric: Just made me think of something I didn't have in my notes.
- 19:54Eric: But when Gail Grady, elvira gets the murderous like that was awesome their owner like, get, make sure you wear your practical shoes.
- 20:07Eric: And then she wears these, of course, ridiculous high heels, which turned out to be a practical shoe, because that's what she uses to disable the the murderous, right.
- 20:16Eric: So yeah it just it's a cookie movie, but tons of fun, tons of fun.
- 20:24Andrea: Well, what about the romance for you?
- 20:26Andrea: How did the romance round up?
- 20:27Andrea: Look for you in this movie.
- 20:29Eric: You know I was like what romance?
- 20:30Eric: But then I realized there was Ted and Ivy, the two contestants who just kind of, hey, I'm in a role, well, I guess I'm in a role plan could go a whole different direction.
- 20:40Eric: I'm into the murder mystery game thing, right, and they, I thought they were just kind of cute how they came together.
- 20:51Eric: And it was, you know, since we have 18 different plots in this movie, it was just the 19th one, but I thought they were really cute.
- 20:59Eric: Clearly Casper and his wife did not make the romance minute or the romance round up, but and then the other relationships were, they were just sort of relationships.
- 21:13Andrea: That's what I was saying.
- 21:14Andrea: Like they felt like old married couples and which they were.
- 21:16Andrea: Yeah, and it was fine.
- 21:18Andrea: I mean, I don't need any like steamy, hot romance in my mystery movies all the time.
- 21:22Andrea: Like I think this was adequate.
- 21:24Andrea: Like you had a little a very, very small like D or E plot of that of Ivy and that guy and you know that was all I needed.
- 21:32Eric: I will say oh wait, was Ivy the bad woman?
- 21:37Andrea: No, ivy was no, you're right, ivy is yeah.
- 21:42Eric: Then the thing I'll say you were saying like, oh, these people who have been married and everything for a while, they are also the most understanding spouses both ways.
- 21:54Eric: Oh, Like Alvira's off doing her shenanigans and her husband's like, all right, you just, you know, be safe, while he's off apparently mortgaging the house and losing it in a poker game or whatever.
- 22:06Eric: Like I couldn't even figure out if that was a real poker game, which it obviously turned out to be, because I thought it was role playing.
- 22:13Eric: I gotta say once again, I was just confused this whole mute movie.
- 22:18Eric: What was what?
- 22:21Andrea: I agree.
- 22:22Andrea: What about characters?
- 22:23Andrea: Any standout characters for you?
- 22:26Eric: I guess everybody, even the who were they, that they were the Swedish couple who were like cheating to win and were so into it Like all the characters in this movie were just so rich, like it was really hard and I decided and I'm going the easy way out but Larry Miller, who is, I guess, maybe the big name one who was in like so many sitcoms or movies and things like that, that's Alvira's husband.
- 22:59Andrea: Okay.
- 22:59Andrea: I was like who was that?
- 23:00Andrea: Okay, got it.
- 23:03Eric: Yeah, he's a well-known, especially back in 2013.
- 23:06Eric: He was a pretty well-known like he wasn't leading movie, but he was in so many comedies, whether it be TV or movie and no so side silly characters.
- 23:15Eric: So I just gave it to him just because of that.
- 23:18Eric: But I would just give it really to the ensemble, because even the ship's captain, who has like two scenes, he nails those scenes the way he's so dramatic with the fake death, he is dead.
- 23:35Eric: I mean I'll give it to the ensemble, I'll take it back.
- 23:39Eric: Larry Miller, you were great, but you're just part of an awesome ensemble cast.
- 23:43Andrea: I mean I kind of agree because I was trying to see I'm like man, I could give it to Peter Benson because I liked his character.
- 23:48Andrea: And then I like I loved the two leads and I loved the other husband and I kind of landed on Ivy Pickling who was played by Kirsten Robek and she was the gal you know who was kind of helping solve the mystery with the potential love interest and she's been in so many Hallmark mystery movies since oh, yeah, she's.
- 24:07Andrea: I think she was in both garage sale and Aurora, I think as someone who was murdered and I think she was the murderous in various different movies.
- 24:17Andrea: So she and you've.
- 24:18Andrea: She was in many other regular Hallmark Christmas movies too, so she plays a like a deep character.
- 24:23Eric: I really enjoy her.
- 24:24Eric: She's like that April Tellek from our last one, who was whatever, who just appears to be in every mystery when you break it down, Right she really is.
- 24:32Andrea: She really is and I enjoy her.
- 24:34Andrea: So I would love to see her in more, you know, a media role, like a best friend role Cause I think she is delightful, so I picked her.
- 24:41Andrea: But I totally agree with you that that cast was dynamite, and try to nail it down to one person You're just like, ah, it could go Eddie anyway, depending on the day.
- 24:50Andrea: Well, what about trivia?
- 24:52Andrea: Do you have any trivia for us?
- 24:54Eric: Well, I kind of really revealed it already in the the did you know Monday?
- 25:00Eric: But it was that Carol, the.
- 25:04Eric: What was it?
- 25:05Eric: Carol Higgins?
- 25:05Eric: The Clark Carol Clark Higgins.
- 25:08Eric: She's also, in addition to being a writer, she is an actress who plays the crazy socialite who's trying to talk them into doing that it's the very beginning of this movie.
- 25:18Eric: So if you're missing and the very very beginning.
- 25:20Eric: The very beginning, cause at the very end she's like see, I told you guys, when they decide to open up their thing, she comes back.
- 25:27Eric: I don't even think I realized that it was so yeah, she she bookcases the movie, but she so the writer makes her little cameo in it, but she's an actual actress, so it's not like the you know, the normal writer making their cameo.
- 25:40Eric: So so there's that.
- 25:43Eric: Like I said before, peter Benson, sort of early on, breaking into who knew at that point we're talking about people who are in literally every other Hallmark movie.
- 25:54Eric: Peter Benson, if he's not in front of the camera as the boyfriend who gets dumped and is totally fine with it, he's behind the camera directing the movie.
- 26:07Eric: He is as Hallmark as Hallmark can be.
- 26:10Eric: And who knew back in 2013, in that little role, what he was going to become?
- 26:16Andrea: I mean they slid him over to Aurora right after this, so after this kind of probably got shelved and Aurora came about shortly after garage sale.
- 26:23Andrea: I think that was kind of that next big mystery and so he slid over there and was in all of the Aurora.
- 26:28Andrea: So that's interesting.
- 26:31Eric: No, he was still sorry, was he?
- 26:32Eric: I guess we'll find out, because we're reviewing the wedding one right, is that what I saw?
- 26:38Andrea: I know and I'm kind of I mean I'm bummed.
- 26:40Andrea: I had a different one that I was hoping people would vote for, but it didn't get the votes.
- 26:44Andrea: So we are doing the wedding one.
- 26:46Eric: Now is Peter Benson.
- 26:47Eric: Does he stay or when?
- 26:49Eric: Now matter, does he go away?
- 26:51Eric: His character.
- 26:53Andrea: Peter Benson?
- 26:54Andrea: I don't remember.
- 26:54Andrea: So Peter Benson is not in the last movie.
- 26:57Andrea: I think he had some sort of conflict.
- 26:58Andrea: So sometimes him and his wife and I'm totally blanking on his wife's name, but they will if they had his character His character his character-wife or his real wife.
- 27:09Andrea: His character-wife.
- 27:10Andrea: And so they would have scheduling conflicts and so they would kind of like sometimes it would be just be him in a movie, sometimes it would be his wife, and I haven't seen this one since the wedding one, since it aired, so I can't remember if he.
- 27:20Andrea: I'm hoping he's in this one, but I know he's not in the last one.
- 27:23Eric: He stayed in though throughout the series, so he doesn't like leave, and that's when Neil Nommar comes in.
- 27:28Andrea: Nope, he is there Cause he plays the one of the detectives, lynn, that's his wife's name.
- 27:34Andrea: Character's wife.
- 27:34Eric: Who, by the way, is my favorite character in the few episodes I have seen Aurora, and it may just be because she hates Candice too.
- 27:45Eric: That's funny.
- 27:47Eric: All right, we're getting this up.
- 27:48Eric: Well, my trivia.
- 27:52Andrea: Really, I kind of already said it as well, but this was going to be a mystery series, like.
- 27:55Andrea: I had read an interview with one of the actors and they were hopeful.
- 27:59Andrea: I think it was Gail that had said this.
- 28:02Andrea: I was really excited.
- 28:03Andrea: I love the script and it was, you know, the potential to become an ongoing series and the way they ended it.
- 28:08Andrea: It definitely left the door open, but unfortunately it must just not have had the viewers.
- 28:13Andrea: And again, in 2013, mysteries were still something new, and so I suppose they wanted, like Lori Loughlin and Candice Camembert those are the two who pretty much started the mysteries so you had two for Hallmark big actresses, and so that's probably what nails-.
- 28:29Eric: We're getting Kelly Martin back.
- 28:31Eric: There was Kelly.
- 28:32Andrea: Martin, too Mystery.
- 28:33Eric: Woman and then Hailey Dean Mystery.
- 28:36Andrea: Woman had to be around this time.
- 28:38Andrea: Those I would have to look up to see like that.
- 28:41Andrea: And Jane Doe, Did those start on the Hallmark channel or did those start somewhere else and they acquired them?
- 28:46Andrea: Do you know?
- 28:47Eric: Oh, I assume that Mystery Woman started on the Hallmark.
- 28:51Andrea: I'm not 100% sure of that.
- 28:53Andrea: I was going to try to look that up because they said garage sale was the first, so I'm not sure we would have to look that up.
- 28:58Andrea: We'll get back to you all next week, are you going?
- 29:00Eric: to figure out how to get a murder.
- 29:02Eric: She wrote into the snuff.
- 29:04Andrea: Well, that started on CBS.
- 29:05Andrea: That was not a Hallmark, but that's where I'm saying.
- 29:07Andrea: I'm thinking it might have been an acquired, but I'm not sure.
- 29:10Andrea: So we'll circle back to that next week and we'll do some research and see if it was the garage sale.
- 29:15Andrea: Was their first, like Hallmark, produced mystery series?
- 29:19Andrea: Cause, that would be my question there.
- 29:21Andrea: Any final thoughts on this movie?
- 29:25Eric: You know what After I'm talking about, I give it at my three and a half.
- 29:28Eric: I'm going to stay, but I'm with you.
- 29:31Eric: I think watching it again I probably would not notch it up a little bit more.
- 29:37Eric: Just talking about it Like it just made me rust.
- 29:40Eric: It is just a fun, fun movie.
- 29:43Eric: It is not by any means like dark, it's not, you know, one of those type of mysteries.
- 29:51Eric: It's like oh, I want to compare it to mystery 101 or even a true justice.
- 29:57Eric: That was just.
- 29:57Eric: It's not that genre at all.
- 30:00Eric: It is just a fun, silly, enjoy yourself.
- 30:05Eric: Mystery, as you said they lay out.
- 30:07Eric: There's no suspense to it.
- 30:09Eric: You're not trying to figure out who the killer is, unless you're me.
- 30:11Eric: Who's trying to, are they?
- 30:13Andrea: Overthink it.
- 30:13Eric: You're overthinking it, but it's just, it's fun.
- 30:18Eric: I would get on the now you don't have the app right.
- 30:22Eric: I watch it in Hallmark movies now.
- 30:24Eric: You watched it, some adults.
- 30:25Andrea: I do have the app.
- 30:26Andrea: I got the app again.
- 30:28Andrea: I had deleted it, but I mean Hallmark entices us by releasing these movies early, so I got it again.
- 30:36Eric: Okay, and if I'm gonna, watch some of the mysteries.
- 30:40Andrea: Sometimes you can't find them on friendly.
- 30:41Andrea: Tv which is where I usually watch them.
- 30:43Andrea: So then I have to have the app to kind of find the older movies.
- 30:47Eric: I will say that that's, you know, the only place you have it.
- 30:50Eric: If you have the app, I would definitely give it a watch.
- 30:55Andrea: Yes, yes, a fun like Saturday afternoon movie.
- 30:59Andrea: It's cute.
- 30:59Andrea: Well, I had my final thoughts.
- 31:02Andrea: I would love to know if you have ever been to like a mystery dinner theater.
- 31:06Andrea: Have you ever done anything like this?
- 31:07Andrea: Or you're in character and trying to solve this mystery.
- 31:10Eric: No, but I would be 100% down for it.
- 31:14Eric: I don't think my wife would be so into it.
- 31:16Eric: She doesn't like the well cause she doesn't like being sort of called attention.
- 31:22Eric: So I don't know if she would be down for that, but I 100% would be, cause I like that too.
- 31:31Eric: So have you been into an escape room?
- 31:33Andrea: I have not.
- 31:34Eric: It's that kind of thing where you have to figure out the clues I get.
- 31:39Eric: I'm also a little bit competitive, so I may get too into it.
- 31:44Eric: That would be the only problem.
- 31:45Eric: I may get a little too into trying to figure it out and all that.
- 31:50Eric: But I think it would be fun.
- 31:54Andrea: I did make my husband go to a mystery dinner theater and I bought it on Groupon, probably around 2013, when we were still dating.
- 32:01Andrea: It's probably why he went.
- 32:02Andrea: I don't know if he would go now.
- 32:03Eric: He's still married I don't know.
- 32:05Eric: That's funny.
- 32:06Eric: You say that We've had this conversation and on top of that I dressed.
- 32:09Andrea: So it was 1920s themed and so I wore this flapper dress and I'm all got my hair done and my husband comes in this suit that is old school, pin striped, and so we show up.
- 32:19Andrea: Nobody else is dressed up.
- 32:23Andrea: I was like, oh you look at me like are you kidding me, and so of course I was hoping that I mean, we were probably way too obvious so they did not give us any murderer or even big part, but it was really fun to try to solve it, as you're having dinner and talking with other people, so I did enjoy it.
- 32:40Andrea: If people enjoy these mystery things or chatting with strangers, you have to be kind of social in that regard.
- 32:46Andrea: They're kind of fun and dress up.
- 32:49Andrea: That made it way more fun, even if you're the only ones.
- 32:53Eric: So you're saying about your husband went when you were dating.
- 32:56Eric: We were just having this conversation.
- 32:58Eric: We went out to dinner with my wife's nephew and his girlfriend was visiting and they were doing something that I looked at her and I was like, yep, you can tell you guys are dating because my wife, she used to do like all those things with me when we were dating.
- 33:14Eric: And then, once you get married, you're like, yeah, have fun with that hun.
- 33:18Eric: No, so it is like the difference of what you do with your significant other in the dating world when you're still trying to impress and make them happy, and then, when you're married, when you just like, yeah, what are you going to do?
- 33:31Eric: So, hey, so that's Hallmark and Schill for a moment, any movies you would relate this to.
- 33:43Andrea: Okay, so I don't have a movie, I have a TV show.
- 33:45Andrea: It is not a murder she wrote, but there is a murder she wrote episode that does take place on a boat, but I didn't do that one.
- 33:53Andrea: So diagnosis murder season seven, episode 12, actually really enjoyed this episode.
- 34:00Eric: I looked it up.
- 34:01Andrea: I looked it up.
- 34:01Andrea: So it says when they try and solve the mystery on the boat, the husband or the wife actually kills the husband while they're out at sea.
- 34:08Andrea: Mark, you know, dr Mark Sloan has to solve the case and I found that to be kind of similar to this in terms of like she tried to like drop poison into his I think she'd actually eventually did into his tea and into his beverage and they were like, oh, was it the daughters?
- 34:29Andrea: Were they trying to get the life insurance?
- 34:31Andrea: Or was it the wife?
- 34:33Andrea: Because now this is her second dead husband?
- 34:35Andrea: You're kind of in on it.
- 34:36Andrea: You know who the killer is from the start and then you know Mark is trying to figure out how to do it and then he gets poisoned.
- 34:42Andrea: But they knew he was going to get poisoned so they had, since they're doctors, they had the antidote on the ship.
- 34:47Andrea: So that's kind of a fun episode.
- 34:49Andrea: I feel like in the nineties they did a lot of these boat episodes in the TV like mystery shows, because I can think of a boat episode for pretty much every mystery series that I watch from TV and they're all fun.
- 35:01Andrea: I mean, they're all kind of like a, I feel like if you put someone on a boat in a mystery, it's just it's a good time, like none of them are like, ooh, that's a bad episode, it's just kind of a fun.
- 35:10Andrea: You got the goofy characters, you're on a cruise, it's just got that atmosphere.
- 35:16Eric: Well before your time.
- 35:17Eric: I wonder if there was ever a mystery on the love boat.
- 35:20Eric: I don't know.
- 35:21Eric: That would be interesting.
- 35:23Eric: So I don't know.
- 35:24Andrea: I've never seen the love boat.
- 35:26Eric: I said before your time For me, I went with, I think, for a current one.
- 35:31Eric: Mystery island has a little same vibe to it of sort of going away and having a mystery.
- 35:40Eric: It's also got a little bit of silliness to it.
- 35:44Eric: Has the two best friends between the, the, the Baroness and Amelia.
- 35:50Eric: But I also and I mentioned it before wedding planner mysteries, just because it was another fun romp of a Walmart mystery.
- 36:00Eric: And then the last one I did, which I don't know if you ever seen on Netflix, is the murder mystery with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.
- 36:08Eric: I never finished that.
- 36:10Andrea: I tried and I couldn't get into it.
- 36:12Eric: Yeah, I didn't think it was the best and I honestly, you know, considering you have Hallmark money and Adam Sandler and Jennifer, I had like two big stars I should have been amazing.
- 36:22Eric: I personally think, yeah, the Hallmark ones are a little better, but it, like I said, if you, if you like this, you may like that one.
- 36:32Eric: Both of us were just yeah, I did make it through it, I didn't make it.
- 36:36Eric: They did a second one.
- 36:38Eric: Maybe that's why I want to say I made it through Half hour and I'm like I'm out, yeah.
- 36:45Andrea: Any fan info, Like I don't.
- 36:46Andrea: I didn't have much, just because this has been so old.
- 36:49Andrea: I just looked at it again, which I had already shared about the IMDB and I'm assuming again that's why it was canceled, just based on people's harsh critiques and, I do think, as a Hallmark, because it was 2013,.
- 37:01Andrea: Some of the critiques I don't think they would hold up.
- 37:04Andrea: Now.
- 37:04Andrea: I think we as a Hallmark viewers understand kind of that mystery genre a little bit better and what they're trying to do.
- 37:10Andrea: I think you know, yes, it was a little hard to follow, but I think that the Hallmark audience now is a little more sophisticated in some of that and so we would have been able to say you know what?
- 37:21Andrea: This is kind of fun, let's do another one.
- 37:23Andrea: It's something unique, it's different, and so I feel like if it would have aired again today, I feel it would have I maybe what do you think gotten picked up.
- 37:34Eric: I Well, I don't know, because with the hallmarks direction, now they need right now.
- 37:40Andrea: Nothing is getting picked up.
- 37:41Andrea: Nothing is getting picked up.
- 37:42Eric: That's not true Cases.
- 37:44Eric: We just heard cases.
- 37:45Eric: Well I know.
- 37:45Andrea: but like not a ton of.
- 37:47Andrea: We have a lot of one offs that are sitting there, that a lot of us like that are just like Francesca Quinn.
- 37:53Andrea: I know I'm standing on a.
- 37:54Andrea: I'm alone on that one, but I love it.
- 37:56Eric: I'm with you.
- 37:56Eric: I'm with you.
- 37:57Andrea: I'm with you there.
- 37:58Andrea: I'm not I know you.
- 38:00Eric: I liked it.
- 38:01Eric: You liked it more but I definitely liked it.
- 38:03Eric: I think that's a good one.
- 38:04Eric: I think that's a good one.
- 38:06Eric: I think that's a good one.
- 38:07Eric: And, by the way, Francesca Quinn is the exact opposite of the spectrum from the mystery crews.
- 38:11Eric: That's talking about a heavy, dark mystery compared to this one.
- 38:16Eric: Yes, Like I said, I think that this would have a chance.
- 38:24Eric: I also think some of that you're talking about A little more.
- 38:27Eric: I think that they under they hallmark themselves understand the genre.
- 38:33Eric: So they probably would have had it be a little bit tighter, Kind of.
- 38:38Eric: You know, I'll go back to cases which is a tongue and cheek mystery, but it still flowed and it had most people really engage who could, who were okay with a comedic mystery.
- 38:53Eric: I know some people don't want a comedy mystery, but I think I agree with you.
- 38:58Eric: I think the hallmark network and the hallmark viewer probably a little more sophisticated in this genre, yeah, that it would have a little bit different Take.
- 39:08Eric: And I guess I still don't understand Michelle Harrison because she to me just screams hallmark leading after.
- 39:19Eric: I agree.
- 39:21Andrea: So agreed, all right.
- 39:23Andrea: Well, what's coming up next?
- 39:25Andrea: We kind of hinted at it.
- 39:26Andrea: So this next week Eric is going to watch Aurora tea garden tell favorite to us part.
- 39:34Andrea: So this one, a quick little description, is just just days before Aurora's wedding a body is discovered and she fears her father may be a suspect.
- 39:43Andrea: So this is one her dad is not in.
- 39:46Andrea: Basically any of them is not discussed very much and so I just remember that, being kind of as a fan of the series like whoa, where did this guy come from?
- 39:56Andrea: Also, I never even thought about her father, certainly, you know, it was just very I guess he was mentioned occasionally.
- 40:03Andrea: So that is in this movie.
- 40:05Andrea: I personally liked the Julius house, but that one didn't get very many votes.
- 40:11Andrea: I remember that one a lot.
- 40:13Andrea: The other ones that I had was the very last one, which Candice's daughter did you watch that one?
- 40:19Andrea: The very last, aurora, her daughter was the one who played her younger version of herself.
- 40:24Andrea: That actually, I will say because I had that on.
- 40:27Andrea: It was playing.
- 40:28Andrea: You know they had a marathon last weekend and I had that on and I forgot like that.
- 40:33Andrea: One of all of the mysteries is kind of scare.
- 40:36Andrea: It's spooky, it talks about a ghost and I had it on as I was not necessarily Halloween out, but it was it's.
- 40:44Eric: I think it may have you look at the release date.
- 40:46Eric: I think it came out around Halloween.
- 40:49Andrea: But it wasn't like a Halloween theme to my any chance.
- 40:51Andrea: But and so like they find like a ghost and dead body, and my eight year old just happened the other two years later.
- 40:57Andrea: He was like walking through and he's like what is this?
- 41:01Andrea: Are there ghosts?
- 41:02Andrea: And I was like, oh gosh, like now he's freaked out, you know because he watched this, and so I will say that one's got like a little more edge to it.
- 41:09Andrea: Then some of the other mysteries and I had forgotten that as I was just having that in the background.
- 41:15Andrea: I'm like noted, this is probably not one to watch.
- 41:18Andrea: Well, my eight year old is around because he got a little freaked out.
- 41:23Eric: And something new came out with Skyler Samuel's playing the new Aurora or the old Aurora, I guess.
- 41:30Eric: But a lot of people were saying why didn't they just use the?
- 41:34Eric: You know, the actress who played it in that episode, her daughter, and it's like I think her daughter probably is not going, like I don't think people maybe a lot of people didn't know that was actually her daughter, cause like wasn't it also Lexa's daughter too?
- 41:49Andrea: I think so Cause I thought it was like I think it was.
- 41:52Eric: Like both their daughters, and that's one of the things that made it somewhat clever.
- 41:56Eric: Yeah, as much as I can say clever about an Aurora movie.
- 42:00Andrea: We'll find out.
- 42:01Andrea: So you have never seen till death.
- 42:02Andrea: Do us part.
- 42:04Eric: I've saw the first three, and then I saw the one with JC Dotten Doton.
- 42:10Andrea: Okay.
- 42:11Eric: Which when she played the killer, and that was just because we're talking to her and so I was like, all right, I have to go through it.
- 42:17Eric: So those are only three that I've.
- 42:19Eric: I couldn't even tell you what one that is.
- 42:21Eric: I think it's around like eight or nine episode eight or nine, something like that.
- 42:27Andrea: All right.
- 42:28Andrea: Well, I'm excited, Excited to review it.
- 42:29Andrea: I have not again.
- 42:30Andrea: I haven't seen this one cause I don't think it was one of my favorites but I could be wrong Just cause there is so many of them.
- 42:36Andrea: I just remember the Julius house, cause they pretty sure that's the one where that one's also actually that one's a little spooky too, Like that.
- 42:44Andrea: Some of these are a little like more spooky, which obviously I'm not a bit like the spooky ones that can actually scare me.
- 42:51Andrea: I don't like that, but I like the cozy, and so some of them are cozy, Some of them have a little more edge to them.
- 42:57Eric: The Julius house was one of our trivia questions, where it was the same house that was in a mystery 101, the same building.
- 43:10Eric: Whatever was in both of them, you know Hallmark always uses the same places, for sure, and I do have a bit of trivia for the one we will be talking about, even though I have not seen it.
- 43:22Andrea: Ooh excited for that.
- 43:24Eric: Okay.
- 43:25Andrea: All right.
- 43:25Andrea: Well it was good chatting with you again.
- 43:28Eric: Last.
- 43:28Eric: I'll leave it on.
- 43:29Eric: I think this is.
- 43:30Eric: This was a movie.
- 43:32Eric: You want to stay for the full cruise and give it a go.
- 43:35Eric: You don't want to go getting thrown overboard?
- 43:38Eric: Okay, andrea, good times why.
- 43:43Eric: We thoroughly enjoyed this.
- 43:44Eric: My hopes are not as high for next week, but we will see.
- 43:48Eric: I will go into it with an open mind, it's fun.
- 43:52Andrea: Have fun with Aurora I'll finish last words Bye, bye.
