- 2:38so today's program original air date was March the fifth of nineteen forty nine,
- 2:44and the title is The Friend from Detroit. When my telephone rang,
- 2:47it checked me out of one nightmare and right into the middle of another,
- 2:51where a woman with a secret, worried man and a shadow out of the
- 2:53past met with fear and fury in the stead of Night. From the pan
- 3:00of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character
- 3:05as CBS presents the Adventures of Philip Marlowe and now with Gerald Moore starred as
- 3:21Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting story, The Friend from Detroit.
- 3:36There was a wood nymph dressed in nothing but a veil of dewdrops. She
- 3:40was pirouetting from one huge bluebell to another, and gussm of wings with ever
- 3:46return. She smiled and came closer. Just as I reached her for a
- 3:51hand. Something happened. The bluebells changed in old tomato cans and started to
- 3:57ring. A bandy legged little man with a jackham I went to work on
- 4:00my head. I fell over a cliff and just before I landed on a
- 4:02red hot pile of brook and Scotch bottles. Oh. I woke up,
- 4:12but the jack cammra didn't stop. I switched down the light and looked at
- 4:15my watch. It was one in the am and the phone on my bed
- 4:18table was screaming for an answer. Hello, Mallow, this is Dave.
- 4:23Betty's gone. She's in trouble. You gotta help me, Mallow, You
- 4:25got to come over to my apartment, right, Who is this, Dave?
- 4:28Dave? I run the Coffee Join in the corner, you know,
- 4:30Yeah, yeah, sure, Dave. I don't know what's the matter.
- 4:32My wife, Betty, she's gone. You gotta help me. Hey,
- 4:34if it's one o'clock in the morning, I'm in bed, becaides. You
- 4:36know, I don't monkey with family quarrel. It's not like that, Phil,
- 4:39Believe me. I'm scared for Phil. Please come over to the apartment.
- 4:42Two thousand feet would ride away. It's a matter of like, Okay,
- 4:45I'll be there in ten minutes. Mallow, I thought you never get
- 4:55here. Look, somebody fired the shot through the door, and when I
- 4:57got back with the asprom, Betty was gone it. Dave, hold it,
- 5:00I'm not even awake yet. Look, sit down, take it on
- 5:01the top slow. Yeah, okay. Maybe it'd started this morning at the
- 5:04Coffee Join when a fancy guy came in and talked to Betty. She waits
- 5:06on the tape. Yeah, yeah, I know, what do you mean,
- 5:09fancy? Well, a slick dresser, cuffling stickpin all that I did
- 5:13know him and Betty toss him off to me as a mash it. Maybe
- 5:15he was, but she seemed upset far Oh yeah, sure. Well tonight,
- 5:18about nine, another guy came in, a chunky bird with a deep
- 5:21voice. Betty had just got back from shopping, and I was in the
- 5:24kitchen, see when I heard a tray of dishes fall, and Betty came
- 5:26back white as a sheet. She was scared, Phil, scared. Stay,
- 5:30Oh, I'm sorry, all right, go ahead. I looked out
- 5:34and that chunky guy was leaving. Betty insisted he had nothing to do with
- 5:38it, that she was just nervous. Was somebody else in the place at
- 5:40the time, Let's see, Yeah, some tribune reporter that comes in every
- 5:43night was up at the counter. He was the only one. And Betty
- 5:46stayed on the job to be closed, yeah, till midnight. But Phil,
- 5:48she was in a bad sheet. After we got home here, she
- 5:51sent me out with some ass. butN I was only out for fifteen minutes.
- 5:54But when I came back, she was gone. And look look this
- 5:57bullet hole in the glass doors of the backyard. Somebody out there shot at
- 5:59her. Maybe Dave's teady not take it easy. You wouldn't Betty have a
- 6:02gun? No, why and in the first place, the bullet went out
- 6:06through this glass. It didn't come in another thing, Dave, who did
- 6:11you call tonight after you phone me? Why nobody phone directly on the address?
- 6:15Here's opening the bees boomed the wardrobe mean anything to you? I didn't
- 6:18even realize it was over there. I looked you up on the classified.
- 6:23Okay, come on, let's take a look in the backyard. Any light
- 6:25out there? Yeah? Right, riguling up for the barbecue. Look,
- 6:32take anything. I will straighten this out, believe me. Let's see a
- 6:40line of sight seems to run somewhere between the barbecue and the gates. Not
- 6:46all hit by the tree. It's a hat. Great snap him. Initials
- 6:48v v R on the sweatban VR mean anything to you? I sure that's
- 6:55Van Remeny's hat. He's the newspaper guy I told you about. Have you
- 6:58a reporter that was in your place tonight? Why should he be dodging bullets
- 7:00in your backyard? I don't know, Dave. Where's Betty from Detroit?
- 7:05When she came out here, I gave her a job and then you both
- 7:08felt for each other and got married. Yeah two years ago next month?
- 7:11Have we been happy? Phil, we been Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 7:13Now, look, Dave, why did you call me instead of the CPS?
- 7:15And I guess I'm afraid he's mixed up and well in something bad.
- 7:19You know, if it turns out that way, I'll have to call him
- 7:21myself. Okay, Phil, But you're on my side until you know for
- 7:25sure. Yeah yeah, all right, now you stay here across to your
- 7:28phone. Okay, I'll check with you right now. I gotta get a
- 7:30line on a bare headed reporter. He can get a start of it.
- 7:32He hasn't lost anything more than his hat when I find him. So long,
- 7:34Dave, the Reporter's had two strangers and a bullet hole somehow added up
- 7:45to the fast fate of a hard working kid named Betty, whose husband's only
- 7:48claim the fame was selling the best cup of coffee in town and made no
- 7:54sense. But as I walked up the streetsward my car, I figured that
- 7:57through van remedy I could get to the first dance. I was wrong.
- 8:01The first answer got to me. A thick heage suddenly spouted arms. One
- 8:07jerked me around while the other held the cold throat of a forty five against
- 8:09my throat. Car registration taxes your name is Philip Marlow. No kidding,
- 8:15how don't suppose that happened? But it doesn't mention your racket shamus. Maybe
- 8:18could be new. I'm a tourist. Oh sure, sure, just have
- 8:22to see the sights, I said, one in particular, twenty five thousand
- 8:26dollars that belongs to me. I don't want any interference from you. And
- 8:28that's square inside there. I mean Dave Prior, I mean Dave Pryor.
- 8:31I'll go back in then and tell the cool off. A little woman is
- 8:35all right. She's just help an old friend, you might say, Might
- 8:37I say you're the friend. Never mind as mister Jitterson there kicks up a
- 8:41fuss everything. I'll be fine. But he knows what she's doing. She's
- 8:45got a lot of talent for it, too much the way slinging hash.
- 8:48And remember what I said, Marlow, lay off, I remember more than
- 8:52that about you. Far gone, Yes, remember the count ten before your
- 8:56moves. Boy, there's no point in trying out smart of forty five and
- 9:03with three steps fargo and vanished in the night. Also gone was a big
- 9:07chunk of my respect for a doll named Betty Pryor and had taste and old
- 9:09friends, just so I wasn't jumping at conclusions. I went to my car
- 9:13and drove down to Hollywood Boulevard. At the first all night gas station,
- 9:18I stopped and put in a colt of The Tribune. A guy on the
- 9:20desk told me threw a mouthful of mangle cigar that unless remedy was at Bungalow
- 9:24twenty four Beverly Crest Hotel, covering the murder of the next Detroit hood.
- 9:28It was fired and he hung up. But the one word Detroit made the
- 9:35call a jackpipe, so I headed for the hotel on the double. It
- 9:37was pink and Spanish and squat in a grove of well behaved palm trees at
- 9:41the edge of the domesticated jungle, which gave the illusion of privacy to a
- 9:45string of bungalows that weren't. But number twenty four had all the privacy of
- 9:48a glass face cutaway bee hive. When I pulled up in the middle of
- 9:52two squad cars and an ambulance went inside. Sprawl on the floor in front
- 9:56of a desk with a very well dressed exhibit a complete with cup links and
- 10:01sticked in and presiding as usual was Detective lieutenanty Bara, but didn't see me,
- 10:05and so I walked up beside him. What are you doing here,
- 10:09Marlowe? I can smell blood clear across town. What's the story, Borrow?
- 10:13The name is Speck Willard, a gambled from Detroit, retired out here
- 10:16to California a few years back to play horses and women. We shot to
- 10:20death at about eight o'clock to night by a person or a person's on owned
- 10:22that a gang, jen Oh, I don't think so. Looks more like
- 10:24arm robbery that could out of had I saw you hind a currency wrapper from
- 10:28a local bank that read twenty five thousand dollars, an open drawer in the
- 10:31bedroom, and one of the bellhops saw a woman unidentified so far run out
- 10:35of here about the time the Carna says that Willard was shot a woman.
- 10:39Yeah, that fits, because he was going to be quite a nightclubber and
- 10:41general playboy. You wouldn't happen to know something about this woman, would you,
- 10:48Marlow? Me? Certainly not. Now I'm after a man alive when
- 10:52I hope mm hmm. Well, look, marlow take this nickel in case
- 10:58you should just happen to hear something I want you to spend that on a
- 11:01phone call to the police department. Now, who is it? You're looking
- 11:05for? A Tribune reporter named Van Remeni? You know, Unfortunately that's him
- 11:09over there, the sticky fingered one by the window, swiping that book of
- 11:13matches just now, the one without a hat. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 11:15I know, Thanks Littendon. I'll see it. Hey, Remedy, can
- 11:20I talk to you a minute? Sure? What's on your mind? I'm
- 11:22Philip Marlow, private detective. Don't apologize? What's up? Marlo? Oh?
- 11:28Girl named Betty Pryor Prior? Mm hmm yeah, yeah. She and
- 11:33her husband running on one arm, joined on Franklin, don't they? Thanks,
- 11:37right, Remeny? I understand Betty got no little trouble to night heard
- 11:39about it. No, I wouldn't worry though. Trouble's not knowe to Betty.
- 11:43And that's one popular school of thought. Incidentally, you seem to be
- 11:46going a long ways out of you away on this run of the mill murder
- 11:50story, Remedy. You're taking a long way around at the point, Pal,
- 11:52get with it. I'm in a hurry. Okay, Pal, I'll
- 11:54keep it under your hat, won't you a great one? I mean so
- 12:00that's out. How do you mind telling me what you saw in prize backyard?
- 12:03Tonight? Your name it? Shall I play dumb or lost? Suit
- 12:07yourself? See, my press card is just as good as your license,
- 12:09sweetheart. He gets me in and gets me out again. My diget's called
- 12:13reporting, remeny. I'll squeeze the truth out of you eventually. Sorry,
- 12:18I can't wait. You got a deadline? Anything else? Yeah? One
- 12:20thing? A match? It's sure, Marlow anytime. Thanks, and Remedy,
- 12:26Yeah, don't hang on too long, lifeless, singe your pinkies.
- 12:33The reporter blew out the match and looked at him steadily for a moment,
- 12:37and his lip shaped the word I ignore it, and he walked away.
- 12:43I had seen enough of the book of matches he'd stolen to know it was
- 12:46a Mistakis room, a glossy glass roof, dine, dance and drinking torium
- 12:48near Rotha Murray Studio and Wisha Boulevard. So I made like I was into
- 12:54the night and watched Remedy lead all the way to his car. He kept
- 12:56looking back over his shoulder as if expected to be followed. I waited till
- 13:01he was out of sight, and I hated for Wiltshire in the Starkiston,
- 13:05but when I got there it was close Remani's car wasn't in the neighborhood,
- 13:09and the only thing that kept the trip from being a total loss was a
- 13:13spotlighted picture ten feet square of a sultual spelt Chanteurs labeled Cala Bourdon. It
- 13:22was come on in smile and almost costume. Was a cinch to increase the
- 13:26accident rate at the block by twenty percent, But then I took another look.
- 13:31Had her name. He got back to business. It started with a
- 13:35bis in phone book, opened a Boone and Bordeaux. I found a directory.
- 13:41He got it open the Boone and Bordeau, and halfway down the page
- 13:45was bored in Cala twenty eight to forty north concern. It took ten minutes
- 13:48to get there and two more to find out that she had an apartment number
- 13:50seventeen. At the end of the first fall hall. The door was opened
- 13:54and I started for it, but got back close to the elevator when a
- 13:56woman came out and ran down the corridor told me it was Betty Pryor hold
- 14:01it Betty, whoa what do you never mind? Is tall Betty having in
- 14:05a long time. I don't know what you're time. Look, you left
- 14:09a pretty worried guy at home, Dave. That's right. Can't you fools
- 14:15leave me alone? Why did he have to be so stupid? Hey,
- 14:16you've got a few ideas mixed step kids. Oh sure, I'm wrong.
- 14:20I'm the one who's all mixed up. Let go until I've got a couple
- 14:22of things straight. Now, what happened at life and a Hamburger? Stand
- 14:26and get a little stale? Yes, you're two bit snooping? Okay,
- 14:30Dave thinks you're in trouble. I think you're in trouble. And I think
- 14:31somebody waved a few bills at you and you lost your grip and you're in
- 14:33some deep now you can't get out, and it's no more than you deserve.
- 14:37Come on, we're going right back down the Hall of callers apartment.
- 14:39We're gonna have a little chat just to three of us. Come on,
- 14:43standstill, Well, my two chums, the fog horn and is forty five
- 14:48caliber equalizer? Easy? Does it? You were lucky the first time?
- 14:52Did you get it? No? Something went wrong, something terrible deep out
- 14:56of the way, all right, you get in that elevator. Cham We'll
- 15:01wait right here to see you leave. God here at forty five makes you
- 15:07awful, brave chum. This way we don't a friend the lady. By
- 15:11being uncouth, you get a chance to go up in the world. Just
- 15:13put your finger on a button. Wait then, come on, all right,
- 15:20all you have to do is push. In just a moment, we
- 15:35will return to the second act of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. But first,
- 15:39the most famous neighbors and radio the Ronald Coleman's will pay Jack Benny a
- 15:43visit again tomorrow as CBS's Great Sunday Night gets underway with another star, start
- 15:46a group of famous entertainers Amos and Andy Lemon Abner, Eve vardener Is the
- 15:52gay school mistress, Armis Brooks, and Helen Hayes as a hillbilly. These
- 15:56are only four more of the ten great entertainments It will come your way tomorrow
- 16:00night. Go visiting with the Colemans on all of these same stations on the
- 16:04Jack Benny Show, and hear the rest of CBS's Great Sunday Night ten as
- 16:10they come one by one over most of the station. And now with our
- 16:15star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of Philo Marlowe and Tonight's
- 16:18story The Friend from Detroit. My cage on cables was ten exasperating seconds getting
- 16:33to the next floor, and that was another ten getting free of it.
- 16:37Back down the stairs and out into the dark street, where a red splash
- 16:38of a tail light disappeared around a corner. And that was all that was
- 16:42left of fog Corn and Company. So I turned back to a Carla Borden's
- 16:47room. When I stepped across the threshold, I found it with the exception
- 16:51of a single bureau that was still intact. Prom Number seventeen looked like it.
- 16:55It just played host to the vortex of a cyclone. The better chest
- 16:59of draws, another bureau at desk, everything was inside out. In the
- 17:03middle of all that was the body of Color Bourdon, blood from a deep,
- 17:07ugly cut on her head, standing in the snow white front of her
- 17:10angora sweat. I saw something else which reminded me that this was not the
- 17:15first coughse of the night. The plush leather frame was shaped like an oversized
- 17:19life saver, and in it as the picture of a handsome man all smiles
- 17:23inscribed me with love to my very best girl, speck Willard. It was
- 17:32ten minutes before I got through the lieutenanty Borough. It was still up at
- 17:33the Beverly Crest Hotel. After I told him about Color and her connection with
- 17:37the late mister Willard and Betty Pryor and my connection with Dave, I stopped
- 17:41talking and listened Marlve. We just learned that Willard had some kind of a
- 17:45twenty five thousand dollars cape of going with one of his old mobster friends from
- 17:48Detroit named Joelazar or maybe it's something with a voice and acted below bottom the
- 17:52same film. Anyhow, it looks like they worked out a gambling deal for
- 17:56old times sake. At the last minute, Willi tried to Welsh and Lazarre
- 17:59and got killed for his trouble, and Lazarre searched the place until he found
- 18:02the twenty five thousand No, no, no, that part doesn't fitty borr.
- 18:04So I've run into Lazar twice tonight. I know he and the money
- 18:07is still strangers. Oh, after what happened here with the team of Betty
- 18:11and Lazar getting to the singer Carl, I figured they're still looking for it.
- 18:14Also, I figured Calor was somewhere near when Lazar kills Peck Willard and
- 18:18then she took her money. It cordulatory buy. We got a clumsy company
- 18:22in the whole outside. All right, Ballerina, gets your foot out of
- 18:29that bucket and come on in with your hands up. Where the man with
- 18:34a very long nose for news? What brings you around? Remedy one thing,
- 18:40the fact that you've got no corner on brains, Milo, And for
- 18:42another, who did that to her? Our mutual friend Betty Prior and her
- 18:48running mate. I believe they were looking for twenty five thousand bucks. Did
- 18:52she and Joel Azzar get the money? My luck? No? They remedy.
- 18:56How did you know the man with Betty was named Joel Azza? Haven't
- 19:00you heard? I'm a good reporter, Marlow. That kind of keeps eyes
- 19:03and ears open and mouths shut. It is until I know the whole story,
- 19:07which, as far as your concern, is precisely what that I happen
- 19:10to be. That I happened to be in Dave's restaurant early this evening,
- 19:14where I recognize the only other cash customer is Joel Azar, and out of
- 19:18work mobster from Detroit. He said something to Betty that scared it right out
- 19:21of a tray of dishes, so I figured i'd find out what was going
- 19:23on. I've been in on the show ever since, Yeah, including a
- 19:26corny black out of a two thousand beach Wood drive where you lost your hat
- 19:30running away from a bullet. That's right, just so you don't toss and
- 19:33turn when you get around to go into bed. Tonight, I'll fill in
- 19:36the rest. I followed Betty and Dave from the restaurant to their apartment.
- 19:40I watched it get rid of Dave, and then when I saw Lazar come
- 19:41in, I moved up close to the window and stayed there until Aza spar
- 19:45did you and throw a bullet? Show away? You're very cleverly as I
- 19:48am. Man. But before that happened, I heard him tell Betty that
- 19:52Speck Willard had talked about a girl singer at the Star Kiss Room named Carla
- 19:56Bordon, and that since he didn't know carl On's site, she could have
- 19:59been a lady seen running out of specs apartment with a twenty five gram Oh
- 20:03that phone book of Dave's open the bees ties in. I'm so glad now,
- 20:07Marla, lest we digress too far. How come as one bureau here
- 20:11hasn't been turned upside down along with everything else. I don't know anymore than
- 20:15I know why you're holding back so much from the law. Oh maybe it's
- 20:18because I don't like cops, Marlo black Ones. Or maybe it's because I'm
- 20:25in the same kind of racket as you. Chen way out in a lot
- 20:26of fast talk, just so papers can know what's going on an hour ahead
- 20:30of the rest of the world. Well, there's no twenty five thousand in
- 20:33here. I gotta blow before Ebarra shows, Before a Barra shows. He
- 20:38always arrives with an entourage, Marlow one that includes other newshounds. So it's
- 20:44me for a fast cabin downtown in my paper with his story. It's a
- 20:47fellas right. Hey, wait a minute, Remedy, Yeah, I'll give
- 20:49you a lift. I'm going that way myself. Okay, I got a
- 20:53story too, a lovesy story. I've got to tell a nice guy named
- 20:56Dave. Come on. All the time we drove, Remedy had faced me
- 21:08and smoke one cigarette after another while I rattled on about joel Is, a
- 21:12great story he had, and a lot of other things I didn't hear because
- 21:17I was busy trying to find the right words with which to tell Dave prior
- 21:19that his wife was no good. So when we were about halfway the beach
- 21:23would drive and Remedy was pushing close to his deadline, decided to get out
- 21:26and the phone his story into my drug store. I was glad. Second
- 21:30after that, I knew I was kidding myself, because even with just silence
- 21:34for company, I was still no place with the right words. Ten minutes
- 21:44later and I stood in front of Dave, and I steps to his house
- 21:45and stam it out of the facts. Just as I had run across him,
- 21:48I forgot about words right or wrong. I thought instead about my client,
- 21:55a badly hurt guy, but one I would never say that Mallow,
- 21:57I can't believe all this. I won't tell me, buddy. Now I
- 22:03don't know Dave. Now, look, maybe we ought to head for police
- 22:06headquarters, because sooner or later we're each going to have a story to tell
- 22:10lieutenanty Barrow. I'm on my cars over here, Okay, Phil, I
- 22:15guess that's the only thing to do, all right, Yeah, I guess,
- 22:18yeah, Bet I have a cigarette day. Oh kid, We'll try
- 22:22to make this as painless as we as we were Molo, what is it?
- 22:26What are you staring at it? Front seat? But I don't see
- 22:30anything, Phil, what is it a minute? Will you? Yeah?
- 22:34Yeah, sure, come on, Dave, pile in but why Mallow?
- 22:37Where are we going? Podcast room to play a long shot. Slapped my
- 22:44foot down hard on the accelerator and kept it that way right through a string
- 22:47of I didn't care what color traffic lights until five minutes later, when we
- 22:48screeched to a stop away from the side entrance the stocks room. I left
- 22:53it in the front seat, pile up fast, and ran a dozen yards
- 22:56on abrupt halls with the sight of something that turned along shot I was playing
- 23:00into a it's a not sound favorite. It was the stage entrance door opened
- 23:06a couple of inches, and in front of that, unconscious on the hid
- 23:08sidewalk where it'd fallen, was the clad and blue form of a private patrolmum,
- 23:14his pistol holster conspicuously empty. Inside. I slowly picked my way along
- 23:22an L shaped card until I saw a shaft of bright yellow from a flashlight
- 23:26that was moving away from my door mark collar Borden. It brought me up
- 23:32short and flat against the wall, but then as the man on the other
- 23:36end of the beam of light moved away from me. I got a very
- 23:38steady grip on the thirty eight of my pocket started after him. A minute
- 23:42later he entered the main room with the club, and it was there as
- 23:45he started across the glass ceiling dance floor. But I recognized the very self
- 23:48confident gave of a very self confident guy, and that made the next move
- 23:52mine bars closed, ring, don't move, buster up, blow your head
- 23:56off. Looks like you're making news this time, good reporter. Or isn't
- 24:03that package in your hand? That twenty five grand you just found in colin
- 24:06board in the dressing room. Huh, the same color board and you're murdered
- 24:08not an hour ago, and in apartment on loose certain well you first thought
- 24:12the money was where Betty Pryor surprised you before you could finish searching. Well,
- 24:15you later returning the role of an all American news boy so you could
- 24:18get to that last bureau. All right, all right, I've heard enough,
- 24:22Marlow, but I'm not going to stick around for more details. You
- 24:23make a break and I'll shoot remedy try it, Eagles, stop remedy,
- 24:26Star Harlow. I shooting, Marlow, don't turn around because where I'm standing
- 24:34it's dark, and where you're standing it's like I'll throw your gun away,
- 24:37fellow. Come on, taught it. That's better, all right, Betty,
- 24:44get up to that dead newspaper guy and get the money. I'll take
- 24:45care of the private detective here, you mean take care of Joe. I
- 24:51can't go along with murder, expect Willis Debat didn't seem to bother you any
- 24:53Marlow. So you killed Yes, I killed spect that wheelchair eight o'clock night,
- 25:00and I had to stay on the cover, but still get my hands
- 25:02and the money, so came to you for help. I didn't tell you
- 25:04about the killing because I didn't think it playful. If you know about it,
- 25:07oh that's history now. And I'll still go to your deer husband Dave
- 25:11and talk lots about the kind of cheap kid you used to be in Detroit.
- 25:14If you don't get moving now, what do you say, Betty?
- 25:17Say no, Joe. I also say I made a mistake in the first
- 25:19place, letting you use me to run your filthy errand just so the guy
- 25:23I love wouldn't have to know about the kind of people I once ran around
- 25:26with before I had any brain. All right, that's the dumb way you
- 25:30want it. That's the dumb way. It'll be taking care of two years
- 25:33and much harder than taking care of one. About three day. Stay back,
- 25:36No, No, I stayed back too long already I stayed back while
- 25:40Betty has been risking her life to protect what we've got. If you take
- 25:41another step out, shoot kid, I'm warning you for the last time.
- 25:45Stay back. No, that's all. I won't gone with that. Yeah,
- 25:55yeah, but that'll be all right. I'll be your no, biddy,
- 26:08doctor Rees, Doctor Rees, please report to surgery well, missus Pryor,
- 26:14doctor Marlowe. Doctor says Stave's going to be trying in a couple of
- 26:17days. Man caught one on the shoulder and the other on the hip.
- 26:19He certainly had courage, didn't he. Yeah, and you did all right
- 26:22too, Biddy, mixing in this whole miss just to keep the home fires,
- 26:26Bernie, tell me whatever they did think that a guy like Dave wouldn't
- 26:30understand that you turned over a new leave. I don't know, Phil.
- 26:36I guess I wasn't very smart. No, you weren't, Missus Bryor.
- 26:38But you're lucky because Marlow here was, And that brings me around to a
- 26:42loose end. Phil, How did you know that Remedy was your man?
- 26:45All right? Because of something I saw in the upholstery at the front seat
- 26:48of my carry bar, tufts of snow white angora, which was the kind
- 26:53of sweat of the cola board and had on when he was murdered after they
- 26:56struggled. And since you didn't touch the body yourself, they couldn't have come
- 27:00from your suit, No, And Remedy was the only other one who had
- 27:03been in my car, So I figured that the angora fuzz had gone from
- 27:08Carla's sweated or Remeny's suit to Maya upholstery, all of which means that Remedy
- 27:14must have been in Carla's room before I got there, as well as after.
- 27:17See, And then once I thought back about his getting out of my
- 27:21car a phony story, and I and I realized that when I dropped him
- 27:23near a drug store, he had also been near the stock estory. Yes,
- 27:27that's exactly where he'd had it. You see. So Joe and I
- 27:30followed both of you from Carla Borton's place because well after Joe put you in
- 27:34that elevator, and we ran. Joe said we had to return and wait
- 27:37for remedy. Were sure to come back and finish his search the whole business
- 27:41because Lazar, after he had murdered Speck will It, was afraid to publicly
- 27:45go after Carla Borton and the money he felt was his. Yes, he
- 27:49knew about me and day because Beck Willard accidentally dropped into our place this morning,
- 27:55yesterday morning. It's now nine am, oh, and a good time
- 28:00to call quits. Uh, good night kids. By the time I got
- 28:17back to my apartment on Franklin, it was half past ten in the two
- 28:21bright morning. I was sporting sandpaper eyelids and a knot in the small of
- 28:26my back that felt like a wet dish rag. Oh. But once I
- 28:30had all the shades down, was undressed and in bed. I forgot about
- 28:36that, and I thought, instead of the wood nwe dressed in nothing with
- 28:41a veil of dud drops. But then suddenly I stopped the telephone. I
- 28:48got out of bed, I picked it up with both hands, opened the
- 28:51dresser drawer and jamped it deep under all the socks I owned. And then
- 28:56I got back to bed and the wooden nim in her veil dewdraps. She
- 29:03was pirouetting from one huge blue belt. Who oh boy eh An Gussimer means
- 29:34The Adventures of Philip Marlowe created by Raymond Chandler, stars Gerald Moore and is
- 29:41produced and directed by Norman MacDonald. Script is by Meldonelli, Robert Mitchell and
- 29:45gene Leavitt. Featured in the cast were Virginia Gregg as Betty Pryor, Peter
- 29:51Leeds as Dave Pryor, Harry Bartel as Van Remoni, and Ed Begley as
- 29:55Joe Lazar. Lieutenant Detective Obara was played by Jeff Corey. The special music
- 30:00was by Richard o'roon. He shown't be with us again next week, when
- 30:07Philip marlow says, it was a hunt through a jungle of city streets,
- 30:15with danger waiting at every intersection until halfway through, when the hunters became the
- 30:21hunter and death brought an end to the game. The Coleman's visiting Jack Benny
- 30:38plus Amos and Andy eve Arden and Helen Hayes as a Hillbilly. He has
- 30:44that earlier announcement about CBS programs tomorrow night sounded great, didn't it? Except
- 30:48you Philip Marlow fans may have been wondering, isn't there a mystery show among
- 30:53that great Sunday Night Tan On CBS. Of course, there is one of
- 30:57the great detectives in the Three World Dashall Hammett's one and only Sam Spade.
- 31:03Sam will be here, hard hitting, fast moving as always Tomorrow Night.
- 31:07On most of these same CBS network stations. This is Roy Rowan speaking.
- 31:12Now stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these same CBS
- 31:18stations. This is CBS the Columbia Broadcasting System Welcome back. Well. A
- 31:42nice role for uh uh, for the uh great Harry Bartel as a bit
- 31:51of a villain in this pace, which wasn't his typical role, but overall
- 31:56just a very believable job. I like the end with the idea of the
- 32:00husband being the one to save the day, and to me, it's kind
- 32:04of a picture of how The Adventures of Philip Marlow really managed to have this
- 32:09sort of grittiness and occasional grimness but also a little bit of hope on the
- 32:16end, which to me makes it just such a compelling and great show to
- 32:21listen to. I have to admit that when it comes to lost episodes.
- 32:25Lost episodes of Gerald Moore's Adventures of Philip Marlow are probably those that I find
- 32:31the saddest, next to Dragnet, of course, and I should mention the
- 32:37two lost episodes we had there, the Flying Trap Peez and The Big Mistake.
- 32:44The good news is that we won't have to deal with lost episodes for
- 32:47quite some time. The next eighteen episodes are all available, and then after
- 32:58that there's a run of another another seventeens. So so these are few and
- 33:09far between, though I definitely wish there were less of them overall. So
- 33:14we turn now to an email from Kim, who says, I just wanted
- 33:19to let you know how much I enjoy your program. I stumbled upon it
- 33:22in Stitcher when I was looking for that other great detective show. I've listened
- 33:27to that one for years and knew you existed. He has even mentioned you.
- 33:30I thought I would give you a try, and I really enjoy your
- 33:32show. You might have similar names, but you take different approaches. You
- 33:37had a listener who wanted to know about sci fi podcast. There's one.
- 33:43It's not quite yours. They do not go in death like you, but
- 33:46we'll get an idea of all the different programs they do, the old time
- 33:50sci fi shows and the individual one suspense they are not in order. It
- 33:55might not be exactly what she's looking for, but it's a really good place
- 33:59to card. It's called Relic Radio. At the moment, they have over
- 34:04three hundred episodes in the sci fi section. Love the diverse detects you have
- 34:08right now, but Johnny Doler is my favorite. Again, thanks for the
- 34:10enjoyment. And she does share the link of Relic radio dot com slash otr
- 34:17slash show slash sci Fi. Well, thanks so much, Kim for sharing,
- 34:23and just go to Relic radio dot com and find out if that's something
- 34:28that you're liking. It would be hard to do a show like Great Detectives
- 34:30of Old Time Radio just because you did not really have the continuing shows and
- 34:37the science fiction genre with the same characters, unless you were dealing with the
- 34:43juveniles shows like Flash Gordon. But I hope that will at least what listeners
- 34:49appetites on that point, I'm going to go hit in wrap it up for
- 34:52today. We'll be back tomorrow with Nick Carter and next week with another episode
- 34:59of the Adventures of Phil Marlowe. I do want to remind you to support
- 35:01the listener support campaign support dot Great Detectives dot debt above the Among the items
