- 0:22SPEAKER_00: In September 1976, the American rock band Boston released their single called More Than a Feeling.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: The song tells the story of a young man who's listening to the radio when a song comes on that reminds him of a former lover.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And what he experienced is, quote unquote, more than a feeling.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Now, this song could also describe writers who are putting the work in every day.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: How many times have you heard writers talk about the need to feel quote unquote inspired, or how they're waiting for the muse to show up and just give them those magic words floating down from heaven?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Well, we've all probably heard people talk about that, but writing doesn't really work that way.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: The best writers know that the creative process is more than a feeling.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: They don't wait around for inspiration to strike.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: The author Seth Godin talks about this in his amazing book called The Practice, and this book focuses on helping creative people ship their work.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Seth Godin says this your work is too important to be left to how you feel today.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: On the other hand, committing to action can change how we feel.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: If we act as though we trust the process and do the work, then the feelings will follow.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Waiting for feeling is a luxury we don't have time for.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Hey, maybe you woke up feeling grumpy or irritable this morning.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe you feel discouraged or you're irritated at a family member or coworker or somebody else.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Maybe you just don't feel like writing today.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Well, never mind all that stuff.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Those feelings ebb and flow like all emotions do.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: It's time to put on your big boy or your big girl riding pants, sit down in that chair and get to work.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I promise your future self will thank you.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Ask yourself honestly if you sometimes let your emotions keep you from writing.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And if that's the case for you today, then just sit down and get to work.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And probably within five or ten minutes, you're gonna start to feel a lot better.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Alright, my friend, as always, thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
