- 0:00Speaker 1: The Mark Simone Show continues on seven to ten wooor
- 0:05Speaker 1: in for Mark Today he is Jim Kerr.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Well, the Stephen Colbear Late Show ends. It's run tonight.
- 0:15Speaker 2: It's rumored that Paul McCartney and Billy Joel will be there.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I don't know if it's been confirmed or not. It
- 0:23Speaker 2: wasn't confirmed when I came to work this morning, but
- 0:24Speaker 2: I came to work at four thirty this morning, so
- 0:27Speaker 2: who knows what might have happened between then and now.
- 0:31Speaker 2: But we have with us someone who knows a whole
- 0:34Speaker 2: lot about music, and that is Scott Shannon, legendary morning
- 0:39Speaker 2: personality of New York's ZEE one hundred, WPLJ and WCBSFM.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Scott.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And good morning to you, and what an excellent job
- 0:50Speaker 1: you are doing today. I was rather just amazed how
- 0:56Speaker 1: easily it is for you, how easy it is for
- 0:58Speaker 1: you to move from one chair rock and road chair
- 1:01Speaker 1: right into talk radio.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Well, thank you, Scott. But you know, like you, I
- 1:06Speaker 2: just love the radio. The radio has always been my yeah,
- 1:09Speaker 2: my friend and my companion since I was a little kid.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I listened to it then and loved it. I listened
- 1:15Speaker 2: to it now and love it. And and you, of course,
- 1:19Speaker 2: with your legendary career, you were not only involved in radio,
- 1:23Speaker 2: but you were also involved in the actual music industry
- 1:26Speaker 2: for a while. And yeah, can you come up with radio?
- 1:32Speaker 1: Radio is my first love. It's been that way since
- 1:35Speaker 1: I was a kid. And that's all I wanted to do.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I didn't want to be a GM I didn't want
- 1:44Speaker 1: to do Bob Pittman's job. I just wanted to be,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you know, a job. I wanted to be on the radio.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And and I love music, It's part of my blood.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But it's just you got to be on the radio
- 1:58Speaker 1: to play it so right.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And I was just wondering how you felt about the
- 2:04Speaker 2: fact that the New York Times published their list of
- 2:07Speaker 2: the thirty greatest living American songwriters and they left Billy
- 2:12Speaker 2: Joel off that list.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Well, I've said it quite a few times on my show.
- 2:19Speaker 1: It's just it's stupid. I mean, whoever put it together
- 2:23Speaker 1: should be ashamed. I mean, Billy Joel is an American treasure. Yes,
- 2:30Speaker 1: God he didn't. He didn't need three or four different
- 2:33Speaker 1: people to help him write those songs. What are the
- 2:37Speaker 1: few artists who does everything himself? And Bruce is the
- 2:43Speaker 1: same way, but you never you never see you know,
- 2:47Speaker 1: underneath the title of the song Billy Joel and in
- 2:51Speaker 1: three other names like Britney, Britney Spears or whoever. Even
- 2:58Speaker 1: even some of the big pop stars today still go
- 3:01Speaker 1: to you know, Sweden or Norway to get help on
- 3:05Speaker 1: writing the hits. But not Billy. He didn't do it,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and he's going on for years. You know. They also
- 3:11Speaker 1: left off Neil Diamond. Oh Diamond, he got the same yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 1: same thing, right, yeah, yes.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I saw a podcast with the New York Times music
- 3:25Speaker 2: critics and the editor and all it did was make
- 3:28Speaker 2: me mad. They were so condescending, you know, so I don't.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Know, Kim, how did they define that?
- 3:37Speaker 2: Well? One guy said, well, Billy Joel's good at writing.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I'm paraphrasing now, Billy Joel's good at writing a certain
- 3:44Speaker 2: kind of song. And then another one of the critics
- 3:47Speaker 2: just admitted he doesn't like.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Billy Joel, but certain kind of song. A certain kind
- 3:52Speaker 1: of song, you mean, like a popular a popular hit song, right.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Right, a popular hit song that people like.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Tell the truth. Did you see any names in there
- 4:03Speaker 1: that you weren't familiar with?
- 4:06Speaker 2: A few that I that I you know, hadn't heard
- 4:09Speaker 2: of before. But you know there are others, like, for instance,
- 4:11Speaker 2: Lucinda Williams is on the list. I have nothing against
- 4:14Speaker 2: Lucinda Williams. She writes nice songs. She wrote a song,
- 4:17Speaker 2: this Kiss, which Mary Chape and Carpenter had a hit
- 4:20Speaker 2: with and I think nineteen ninety or nineteen ninety one.
- 4:23Speaker 2: It was a good song. But she's on the list
- 4:25Speaker 2: and Billy Joel isn't. That's the part that makes me crazy.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I was sad. And you know what, Mariah Carey is
- 4:32Speaker 1: a fine artist, but she didn't or write all those
- 4:36Speaker 1: songs she might have written. She might have helped out.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And I like her. I think she's fine. But before
- 4:44Speaker 1: Billy Joel, that makes no sense. You can go through
- 4:48Speaker 1: there and take five, six, seven, maybe eight people who
- 4:52Speaker 1: should Billy Joel should have been in before they were in.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Oh and by and by the way, Scott, since we're
- 5:00Speaker 2: under these time constraints, I just wanted to mention that
- 5:06Speaker 2: one of our iHeartRadio on Air colleagues, Helen Little, will
- 5:11Speaker 2: be inducted as a member of the Class of twenty
- 5:14Speaker 2: twenty six into the Radio Hall of Fame. You have
- 5:17Speaker 2: often been the master of ceremonies for that event. You're
- 5:20Speaker 2: an important part of it, and you know that that's
- 5:22Speaker 2: a really big deal for Helen.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Oh, she's a superstar in Philly and she's gonna be great.
- 5:32Speaker 1: She's also going to be good. And I got to
- 5:35Speaker 1: say boomersiasin.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Also Boomer he's a sports legend. On w fa N.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Before we run out of time, tell me what you
- 5:46Speaker 1: thought about McCartney on Saturday Night Live.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I think that it would be acceptable to people, because
- 5:55Speaker 2: they love Paul McCartney so much, if he were to
- 5:58Speaker 2: have a bunch of background singers who could hit the
- 6:02Speaker 2: notes that he can't hit anymore. They would just be
- 6:05Speaker 2: happy to see him on the stage, love the songs
- 6:08Speaker 2: that he has created that are so wonderful and such
- 6:11Speaker 2: an important part of people's lives, and let some background
- 6:15Speaker 2: singers hit the high notes. How's that well?
- 6:19Speaker 1: I saw I saw him in one of the places
- 6:25Speaker 1: in New Jersey where they have you know, the concerts
- 6:28Speaker 1: now and I noticed that he wasn't hitting all the notes.
- 6:33Speaker 1: There wasn't much different I think he was. I think
- 6:37Speaker 1: he's better in person with his band on stage than
- 6:42Speaker 1: he is on the stage of Saturday Night Live, right
- 6:45Speaker 1: because and he doesn't hit all the notes. But I
- 6:49Speaker 1: got to tell you something. I walked out of there
- 6:51Speaker 1: happy to see Paul McCartney. You know, here's the guy
- 6:55Speaker 1: that's been singing sixty five in years right and hitting
- 7:00Speaker 1: all the nose. But he's still Paul McCartney. He's a beatle.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Look what he gave us, Look what he did for music.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And Scott, I would be Scott, I would be happy
- 7:12Speaker 2: if Paul McCartney stood on the stage and he had
- 7:14Speaker 2: to just recite the lyrics rather than sing them. He's
- 7:17Speaker 2: that important, he really is. Time it's time for us
- 7:20Speaker 2: to go, Scott. It's been fun talking with you.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Great talking to you and my favorite radio producer, Trevor
- 7:29Speaker 1: probably overseeing things today. He's a great guy. You're lucky
- 7:33Speaker 1: to have him on the air, my friend.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Okay, thank you so much. Yeah, he just got promoted
- 7:38Speaker 2: here at I.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Know, I know all about it. He's working with you now.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Okay, thanks a lot, Scott, appreciate your taking the team
- 7:45Speaker 2: to speak with us this morning here on the Mark
- 7:47Speaker 2: Simone Show from w o R
