- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah Chapter
- 0:197. Isaiah 7, Now this particular
- 0:23episode is going to be interesting because we are back
- 0:26in a narrative portion of scripture, which it's been, it's
- 0:31been a hot minute since we have been in an actual narrative.
- 0:35I want to say, man, possibly all the way back in Mark might have
- 0:44been the last narrative that we walked through together 'cause
- 0:47we've been in a lot of epistles and different things like that.
- 0:50I'll have to look that up after the episode.
- 0:52Or if one of you knows the answer, you can throw it in the
- 0:55comments if you're on Facebook or YouTube and you can be like,
- 0:58listen, Brian, we just went through a story back during this
- 1:01time. Yeah, I think it might have been
- 1:04Mark because we went through a lot of Psalms and prophets and
- 1:09that kind of stuff. So I'm excited.
- 1:12We've been looking at a lot of prophecies and then last the
- 1:17last two episodes we walked through Isaiah 6 of Isaiah's, if
- 1:21you will, call to the ministry of what it looked like for him
- 1:25to be prophesying for the Lord. And we are jumping into a
- 1:30specific point in history. In Isaiah Chapter 7 and verse #1
- 1:37it says this. And this is everything that's
- 1:39about to follow. This took place during the reign
- 1:42of Ahaz, son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah.
- 1:47So Ahaz is not a good king of the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 1:51We're going to see that even throughout the passage.
- 1:54Aram's king resin, that would be the area currently known as
- 1:57Syria. When you see Aram in Scripture,
- 2:01that is that area of Syria. Aram's king Resin and Israel's
- 2:06King Pika, son of Ramallah went to fight against Jerusalem, but
- 2:11they were not able to conquer it.
- 2:14So here there is a uniting of two nations.
- 2:16The northern Kingdom of Israel and their neighbors to the
- 2:20north, Syria, are coming down to fight against the southern
- 2:24Kingdom of Judah, specifically to try and take over the capital
- 2:29city of Jerusalem. We read in verse #2 when it
- 2:32became known to the House of David that Aram had occupied
- 2:36Ephraim, the heart of Ahaz and the hearts of his people
- 2:39trembled like trees of a forest shaking in the wind.
- 2:44So they're scared when they hear about this military alliance
- 2:47between these two nations. Verse #3 Yahweh said to Isaiah,
- 2:52go out with your son, sheer Jishab, which his name means a
- 2:57remnant will return. So all the way through, we'll
- 3:01see it in today's episode. We'll see it I think in the next
- 3:04two or three episodes as well. God kept telling Isaiah as he
- 3:09was having kids to give his kids like names.
- 3:13That meant something in prophecy against Jerusalem and Judah and
- 3:20Israel. And so here this son's name
- 3:24means a remnant will return. So the remnant part tells you
- 3:29that there's going to be exile and destruction, which is the
- 3:33same message of prophecy that we've been reading all the way
- 3:36through Isaiah. But there's also hope there that
- 3:39a remnant will return to the land that God will not be
- 3:42totally done with his people, but they will be able to come
- 3:46back to the land. So he says go take your son, she
- 3:50or Jashub to meet a has at the end of the conduit of the upper
- 3:53pool by the road to the launderers field.
- 3:57Say to him, calm down and be quiet.
- 4:00You can, you know, people have different Bible verses on, you
- 4:06know, the walls are on a cup and I think a calm down and be quiet
- 4:11cup would be hilarious. It's kind of the same vibe as
- 4:14the, you know, be still and know that I am God, but it's a little
- 4:17funnier. Calm down and be quiet.
- 4:19Someone throw that on a cup for me.
- 4:21He says don't be afraid or cowardly because of these two
- 4:25smoldering sticks, the fierce anger of resin and Arum and the
- 4:30son of Ramallah here there is an he says, don't be afraid or
- 4:35cowardly, calm down, be quiet. You don't have to worry about
- 4:40this invading force because I am going to take care of you.
- 4:44He says in verse #5 for Aaron along with Ephraim and the son
- 4:47of Rimalia have plotted harm against you.
- 4:49They say, let's go up against Judah, terrorize it and conquer
- 4:53it for ourselves. Then we can install Tabil's son
- 4:57as king in it. So they want to set up kind of a
- 5:00puppet king that will be there, that will cause the nation Judah
- 5:03to do whatever Israel and Syria want them to do.
- 5:07We're #7 this is what Yahweh Adonai says.
- 5:12It will not happen. It will not occur.
- 5:15God says the nations have their plans, they have armies, they
- 5:19have generals, they have designs, but I will not allow it
- 5:22to take place. This is one of the great
- 5:24comforts as we interact with our world, that just because a
- 5:29certain military force outnumbers another does not mean
- 5:33that they will gain the victory. Just because there are great
- 5:37plans for evil does not mean that they will occur.
- 5:42Any plan will fail without the express consent of God.
- 5:49Now, bad things sometimes do happen, and you can look at the
- 5:53book of Job to walk through a lot of those questions of why
- 5:56does it happen? What can we learn from that?
- 6:00How should it make us rethink our relationship with God or how
- 6:05we think about the world at large?
- 6:08If you have some interest in Job over on the Tabernacle Baptist
- 6:12Essex Sermon podcast, I'll I'll put a link in the description
- 6:16for this. We've been going through the
- 6:19book of Job on Sunday nights and it has been a phenomenal study
- 6:24together. I have loved that time in the
- 6:26Word. And so I want to encourage you
- 6:28if you have any questions about that, the problem of evil, head
- 6:31on over there and it'll be a great time.
- 6:34But So what we read here is God is the one that He can stop the
- 6:40plans of humanity. And so we do not have to fear
- 6:45when God has spoken, when God has declared his protection, we
- 6:49can rest in that verse #8 the chief city of Arum is Damascus.
- 6:53The chief of Damascus is Resin. Within 65 years, Ephraim will be
- 6:59too shattered to be a people. So here he says, right now you
- 7:05guys are worried about your survival as the southern Kingdom
- 7:07of Judah, he says, but Israel, this northern Kingdom of Ephraim
- 7:13with Samaria as its capital city, it is going to be
- 7:16destroyed within 65 years, as we'll read later in the chapter,
- 7:21that will happen as a result of the Kingdom of Assyria coming
- 7:24through. So he says in verse #9 the chief
- 7:28city of Ephraim is Samaria, and the chief of Samaria is the son
- 7:31of Ramallah. If you do not stand firm in your
- 7:34faith, then you will not stand at all.
- 7:38Belief in God, in God's Word, in God's character and nature is
- 7:45paramount for us. Being able to stand up in the
- 7:49world that we fight with today. Like you need to have a faith in
- 7:56God, that God will be true to His Word, that God will
- 8:00accomplish everything that He has said, that you will obey God
- 8:03regardless of what other people do or say or want.
- 8:07You have to stand firm in the Lord.
- 8:10It is the only way to stand. You can think about Ephesians
- 8:13chapter 6 having done all this to stand.
- 8:18That is the call for us. Continue to stand in your faith
- 8:21no matter what the world around us may say or do.
- 8:24So here's this wonderful prophecy from Isaiah to King
- 8:30Ahaz of Judah saying, though people are plotting evil against
- 8:33you, it will not come to pass. And in fact, these nations will
- 8:37be destroyed within 65 years. This should because for great
- 8:42rejoicing. But we read in verse #10 Then
- 8:46you always spoke again to Ahaz. Ask for a sign from Yahweh your
- 8:50God. It can be as deep as Sheol, as
- 8:53the grave, or as high as heaven as the skies.
- 8:57So he says, ask for whatever you want.
- 8:59As proof of this, the Lord here does not ask.
- 9:06It has whether or not He wants a sign.
- 9:08He tells him ask for a sign. This is a command from God
- 9:13himself saying I want to prove to you that my word is true.
- 9:19What do you want me to do? A has in verse #12 replies I
- 9:24will not ask, I will not test Yahweh.
- 9:29God gives a has a command and though here a has kind of
- 9:33baptizes it in religious language.
- 9:36He says I I will not ask, I won't test Yahweh.
- 9:39He's not testing Yahweh. He's not saying God, you told me
- 9:43to do this and I'm not sure if you're going to be trustworthy
- 9:47or faithful. And so I want proof of this.
- 9:51God is saying, I want to give you proof, so ask for the proof.
- 9:58And a has here declines. We would read elsewhere in
- 10:02Scripture. A has is a very ungodly ruler.
- 10:06He's not one that followed Yahweh.
- 10:09And so we are to understand verse #12 as God gave a command
- 10:15and A has disobeyed the command and refused God, which is why we
- 10:20then read in verse #13 Isaiah said, listen, House of David, is
- 10:27it not enough for you to try the patience of men?
- 10:31Will you also try the patience of my God?
- 10:34In essence saying, you guys are so annoying and now you're going
- 10:39to try and like take off God as well.
- 10:43Verse #14 He says, therefore the Lord himself will give you a
- 10:47sign. You didn't ask for proof.
- 10:49So God is going to give you proof.
- 10:51He says, See, the Virgin will conceive, have a son, and name
- 10:56him Emmanuel. By the time he learns to reject
- 10:59what's bad and choose what's good, he will be eating Kurds
- 11:03and honey. For before the boy knows how to
- 11:06reject what is bad and choose what is good, the land of the
- 11:09two kings you dread will be abandoned.
- 11:13The Lord will bring on you, your people, and your father's house
- 11:17such a time as has never been since Ephraim separated from
- 11:21Judah. He will bring the king of
- 11:23Assyria. So I want to stop real quick
- 11:27because many of us are familiar with verse #14 we have not often
- 11:33heard the context for what verse 14 says.
- 11:39So here's what's going on. God says there is a woman that
- 11:44is here. From contextual clues, even
- 11:48looking at chapter 8, it would appear as though Isaiah's wife
- 11:55may have also been with him or near the room at the time.
- 12:01Because there's 3 or 4 kids of Isaiah's that are given specific
- 12:08names in chapters 7-8 and nine that have particular meaning and
- 12:15prophecy for Israel, for here the people of Judah.
- 12:21So it could be that Isaiah's wife is there and she's the one
- 12:26being talked about. You would then rightly say,
- 12:29well, wait a second, it says here the virgin will conceive.
- 12:33And if Isaiah's wife already has sheer Jashub, then how could she
- 12:39be a virgin? There's been a ton of various
- 12:44interpretations of this over the years, so I want to level with
- 12:47you guys on that couple of the options that I'll try to run
- 12:51through really quick. One would be that she or
- 12:53Jashub's mom passed and so now there was going to be a new wife
- 12:59and perhaps even Isaiah's like betrothed.
- 13:04His fiance was there as well. And so then she would have been
- 13:11a virgin, but would conceive, would have a kid.
- 13:14And by the time the kid grew up here, was able to determine
- 13:18between what's good and bad or could tell between his right
- 13:21hand and his left, choose what's tasty and what's not tasty.
- 13:26And is able to discern that even in his palate.
- 13:29As we would read in verses 15 and 16, that Israel and Aram,
- 13:34Syria would no longer be an issue.
- 13:37That basically it's within 5 to 10 years, these guys are going
- 13:42to be totally gone. And the proof of this is going
- 13:45to be this kid. Now, it could just be a random
- 13:48person, a random woman that was there within kind of that, you
- 13:55know, it's not an actual courtroom, but in the King's
- 13:57entourage, a woman that is there that would have a son.
- 14:02And by the time that kid was 5 to 10, there would be no more
- 14:07Syria or the northern Kingdom of Israel to harass, to harass the
- 14:13southern Kingdom of Judah. So that is, those are two of the
- 14:17interpretations. There's a third, there's a third
- 14:22one that people have posture, I think.
- 14:26I think the word is postulated. If that's not the right word, I
- 14:30apologize. You can look up in a in a
- 14:32dictionary to see if that's the right word after another option
- 14:37that's been postulated is that this is strictly about Jesus and
- 14:44that the prophecy is there is going to come one who is born of
- 14:49a virgin. So here in the virgin will
- 14:53conceive that that can very often be a person that had not
- 15:00previously, in the words of the old King James, known a man and
- 15:05a pawn having known a man was impregnated.
- 15:10So that could be one way that that is taken.
- 15:15The other way you could take it would be that it is a virgin who
- 15:19is still a virgin even in the conception and and afterwards
- 15:26there so some people recognizing what Matthew tells us in Matthew
- 15:32one that part of the virgin birth of Christ.
- 15:37Matthew ties it directly to this passage so some people would say
- 15:41there's not a both and fulfillment of this passage.
- 15:46So there was a prophecy given here to a has about someone that
- 15:50he could see with a within 5 to 10 years as this woman right
- 15:56over here is going to have a kid gonna is going to name him God
- 15:59with us that within 5 to 10 years.
- 16:04Syria and Israel will be no more.
- 16:08They won't be a problem for you anymore.
- 16:11They would say that was not a prophecy given this is actually
- 16:15just all about Jesus. That's that particular position
- 16:19is a little harder for me to gel with the passage because there's
- 16:24such specifics given on you're scared about these kingdoms.
- 16:29I'm going to take care of the kingdoms.
- 16:31And here is a temporary, immediate proof of what I'm
- 16:35going to do. But as Matthew thinks about the
- 16:40story of Jesus, about what Mary experienced, that she had not
- 16:46known a man, Matthew is looking back at the Old Testament saying
- 16:50this is what reality was. Did God give us any clues?
- 16:57And as he looks at the scroll of Isaiah, he goes, oh, here a
- 17:02virgin did conceive. And it wasn't just what happened
- 17:06here in Isaiah 7, but it also happened with Mary, with Jesus
- 17:10in an even bigger, better, truer way.
- 17:15So that would kind of be the position that that I would hold.
- 17:20Luke, obviously, in Luke 1 and 2 also highlights that in the
- 17:24virgin birth of Christ as well. So if you go how does this tie
- 17:29together? Isaiah 7 has an immediate
- 17:33prophecy with fulfillment within 5 to 10 years of when the
- 17:38prophecy was given. As well as the Holy Spirit
- 17:43conceived in Mary, who had never known a man, she was a virgin.
- 17:49The Holy Spirit created the human Jesus Christ within the
- 17:56womb of Mary. And as Matthew and Luke go, wow,
- 18:01look at what God has done. As they look back at the Old
- 18:04Testament, they would say this is something that God told us
- 18:10that a virgin would conceive and there would be Emmanuel, God
- 18:13with us. And while it had that
- 18:16fulfillment 600 years ago, it also had fulfillment right here
- 18:21in the 1st century. It's part of the cool thing of
- 18:24God's word is that, especially as it relates to Old Testament
- 18:30prophecy and New Testament fulfillment, is that as the Old
- 18:35Testament prophets, as they wrote, there were things that
- 18:39they perhaps did not know the full extent of.
- 18:43How true their writings were, because it wasn't just them, it
- 18:47was the Holy Spirit guiding so that what they wrote was exactly
- 18:52what God wanted them to. And so the New Testament writers
- 18:55will often look at the Old Testament and say, here's
- 18:59something that the Old Testament writers said that is ultimately
- 19:03true of Jesus. And as we see the Old Testament
- 19:07all together now, it points over and over and over again to Jesus
- 19:11Christ Himself. I'll, I'll stop there for the
- 19:16moment. The remaining, the remaining
- 19:20verses of this chapter are just here is going to be what happens
- 19:25to the Kingdom of Israel. He says in verse #18 On that day
- 19:30Yahweh will whistle to flies at the farthest streams of the Nile
- 19:34and to bees in the land of Assyria.
- 19:36All of them will come and settle in the steep ravines, in the
- 19:40clefts of the rocks, in all the thorn bushes, and in all the
- 19:43water holes. On that day the Lord will use a
- 19:46razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River, the king of
- 19:50Assyria, to shave the hair on your heads, the hair on your
- 19:54legs, and even your beards. Here God is bringing Assyria and
- 20:00Egypt to exile and eradicate this nation of Israel.
- 20:08He says on that day a man will raise a young cow and two sheep,
- 20:12and from the abundant milk they give he will eat Kurds.
- 20:16For every survivor in the land will eat Kurds and honey.
- 20:20So here there's a severe dearth of crops such that the food that
- 20:29is available is only food that comes from animals, not from
- 20:35planted things like grain or corn.
- 20:38You're only getting it from cows and from sheep and their honey
- 20:44that comes from bees. Verse 23, on that day, every
- 20:48place where there were 1000 vines worth 1000 pieces of
- 20:51silver will become thorns and briars.
- 20:55There's more of the crops. The grapes here specifically are
- 20:59totally done away with. It's just become overgrown.
- 21:02There's thorns, prickly plants, all of that.
- 21:06Verse 24, A man will go there with bow and arrows because the
- 21:09whole land will be thorns and briars.
- 21:12You will not go to all the hills that were once tilled with a hoe
- 21:15for fear of the thorns and briars.
- 21:17Those hills will be places for oxen to graze and for sheep to
- 21:22trample. So here the Lord makes it very
- 21:25clear, the southern Kingdom of Judah, you will be OK for now.
- 21:32Right now is not the time of your judgement.
- 21:36Couple practical things for you #1 be thankful for Jesus, that
- 21:40one who though he was from the House of David, he was not one
- 21:45that was belligerent and disobedient and evil like all of
- 21:50his ancestors had been. Jesus was totally unique and
- 21:54because he was perfect, holy God that he did not have the same
- 21:59sin nature that we did pass down from our Father Adam, that Jesus
- 22:05conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.
- 22:09He started with that clean slate, with that perfection.
- 22:13And so as a result, He was one that got in the flesh.
- 22:17He did everything perfect. He did everything right so that
- 22:20our redemption could be bought. So we can be thankful for Jesus.
- 22:23When God tells us to do something, do not tell him no.
- 22:27Here a has was commanded ask and he went no, He bathed it in
- 22:32really religious language. But if God gives us a command in
- 22:36his word, we have to obey it. There's no ifs, ands or buts.
- 22:39There's no but I don't really want to.
- 22:41Let's just obey. And then let's be thankful that
- 22:45God is sovereign over the nation's, sovereign over kings
- 22:48and armies, that we can trust that what God says will go.
- 22:56And it doesn't matter what anyone's plans are.
- 22:58If God says that those plans will be thwarted and stopped.
- 23:03They will be. And God is able always to bring
- 23:05a bigger fish along that will save and will rescue.
- 23:10Thanks for tuning in today. Next episode we'll look at
- 23:13Isaiah chapter 8.
