Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB Contract Series: How Many More Years Will LB Zack Baun Remain With The Eagles?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? It
- 0:15Speaker 1: is Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan and we are continuing
- 0:18Speaker 1: with our Eagles contract podcast series. We have broken down
- 0:22Speaker 1: the Eagles into position groups and done podcasts noting the contracts,
- 0:26Speaker 1: what they mean for twenty twenty six, for the player,
- 0:30Speaker 1: what they mean for the player's future, what they mean
- 0:32Speaker 1: for the team's salary cap and salary in general, for
- 0:37Speaker 1: now and the future. And as we always say, the
- 0:39Speaker 1: contracts determine your security. And we've talked about a lot
- 0:42Speaker 1: of players, Adam who either are in for a big
- 0:46Speaker 1: twenty twenty six if they want to get an extension
- 0:49Speaker 1: or should be extended now, like a DeVante Smith, maybe
- 0:52Speaker 1: a Jaalen Carter, things of that nature. And in this episode,
- 0:55Speaker 1: we're gonna look at off ball linebacker and it's gonna
- 0:59Speaker 1: be a fun conversation because we're actually talking about contracts,
- 1:03Speaker 1: big contracts for all fall linebackers. Who would have thought
- 1:05Speaker 1: Eagles reporters would be able to do that five, six,
- 1:08Speaker 1: seven years ago? Right? Yes?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Or as Vic calls some i LB's he refuses to
- 1:12Speaker 2: say off the ball. He don't like that, he likes
- 1:14Speaker 2: he likes ILB.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Why he doesn't like that because they're not technically inside, right,
- 1:18Speaker 1: I mean they're not flank.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Well, it's a thirty four front. I mean it's a
- 1:21Speaker 2: it's a thirty four front though the way they do it,
- 1:23Speaker 2: their edges are overhangs. He'll acknowledge that, which he did
- 1:27Speaker 2: when he first came here, which is if you talk
- 1:30Speaker 2: to Pittsburgh Steeler people, they'll say they run a thirty
- 1:34Speaker 2: old score, old school thirty four front, right, and I'm
- 1:37Speaker 2: called a five man front. They to thirty four with
- 1:39Speaker 2: two overhangs, but they're not, you know, they they it's
- 1:43Speaker 2: about alignment. But anyway, Yeah, Zach Barne's contract will get
- 1:48Speaker 2: into his. They made a small adjustment, which is what
- 1:49Speaker 2: they've done with other veterans over the years. Not a
- 1:51Speaker 2: lot of them, but they've made some adjustments for cap
- 1:54Speaker 2: purpose to do his contract, which he had heat, which
- 1:56Speaker 2: he agreed to. And then you've got Ja Hot Campbell,
- 1:59Speaker 2: who's in your two of his four year deal plus
- 2:01Speaker 2: with a fifth year option. Trot Junior is in the
- 2:04Speaker 2: third year of his four year deal. This is a
- 2:06Speaker 2: big off season for him because Campbell remembers not practicing.
- 2:08Speaker 2: He's taking metal reps and This is kind of you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: the Eagles have shown Howie because he makes the decisions.
- 2:15Speaker 2: They've shown a willingness to not just have to feel
- 2:18Speaker 2: like they had to sign a veteran they made for
- 2:20Speaker 2: training Campbell Cee, but they got extra looks at Mondon,
- 2:26Speaker 2: at Trot Junior. Get a look at these guys and
- 2:29Speaker 2: see what they have because Campbell's not there, and you
- 2:32Speaker 2: don't have a veteran who would take away snaps. It's
- 2:34Speaker 2: you're actually a really smart thing.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, So let's get back to burn because
- 2:40Speaker 1: this contract's really interesting, not only because he's an Eagle
- 2:44Speaker 1: and making top market money, but remember he comes here
- 2:47Speaker 1: as a guy who was mostly a special teams guy
- 2:50Speaker 1: in New Orleans edge a little bit of edge rotational there,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and then they stumble upon a guy they have the
- 2:58Speaker 1: idea to move into off ball linebacker, and then they
- 3:00Speaker 1: stumble basically into an All Pro player. In his first season,
- 3:04Speaker 1: he helps Eagles win a Super Bowl, and it's not
- 3:07Speaker 1: just a fluke. He winds up playing really really well
- 3:09Speaker 1: all year long. I still remember some of the inside
- 3:13Speaker 1: the tapes with Greg Cosel we would do and it's
- 3:15Speaker 1: like wow, Week three, he makes a play, and we're like,
- 3:17Speaker 1: darn and in Week five and what was this guy? Yeah,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, it's like commonplace, like,
- 3:22Speaker 1: oh my god, he's making plays every single game, he's
- 3:24Speaker 1: that good. And then he makes all pro. So then
- 3:26Speaker 1: he signs a blockbuster contract. We should talk about because
- 3:31Speaker 1: it's really the first time I can remember, since me
- 3:35Speaker 1: covering the team that the Eagles gave an ilb or
- 3:39Speaker 1: an off ball linebacker that kind of money.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah, we should note though, when he signed there in
- 3:45Speaker 2: twenty twenty four, he signed a one year deal worth
- 3:48Speaker 2: around four million. They guarantee most of it, right, But
- 3:52Speaker 2: he was signed to be a special teams coverage player
- 3:56Speaker 2: and to be a backup edge rusher.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:00Speaker 2: He had did have some work as a strong sidelineback
- 4:03Speaker 2: with the Saints. He actually had I think his only
- 4:05Speaker 2: interception before he came to the Eagles at that linebacker position.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But overall, it was one of those situations that came
- 4:14Speaker 2: out of nowhere. They knew they had to bring him back.
- 4:16Speaker 2: He signed it. He re signed three years fifty one million.
- 4:19Speaker 2: They fully guaranteed two seasons. The third year was not guaranteed,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and it was a situation where they kind of knew
- 4:27Speaker 2: because his tape was so dynamic and his ability to
- 4:30Speaker 2: process was so elite. They saw, hey, it's real, it's
- 4:36Speaker 2: one year, but you can't. You have to have a
- 4:39Speaker 2: super high level of intelligence to play at that level,
- 4:41Speaker 2: like your ability to process. And the word that we
- 4:45Speaker 2: got was his tape from a cover standpoint was elite,
- 4:48Speaker 2: Like how how could this happen? This is sort of
- 4:51Speaker 2: like Christopher Sanchez, Like, if you follow the Phillies came
- 4:55Speaker 2: out of nowhere, was traded for Curtis Meade, who now
- 4:58Speaker 2: I think he's starting for the Nats or someth thing.
- 5:00Speaker 2: He's like an infielder. But who was the Phillies When
- 5:04Speaker 2: they got them, they thought, oh, maybe long relief, who'll
- 5:06Speaker 2: probably be a Triple A player. Well, who knew great coaching?
- 5:09Speaker 2: And the guy who took to the coaching is now
- 5:11Speaker 2: one of the best pictures in baseball. Well, Zach Bond's
- 5:14Speaker 2: one of the best in side lnebackers on football? Who
- 5:16Speaker 2: the hell knew?
- 5:17Speaker 1: Mm hm?
- 5:18Speaker 2: And you give you give Howie credit for siding the guy.
- 5:21Speaker 2: You got to get some credit, but Vic Fandrews deserves
- 5:23Speaker 2: us the most and the player for sure. And then
- 5:26Speaker 2: they this spring they made an adjustment to his contract.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Again they've done this before. He already had four voidable
- 5:34Speaker 2: years by the way, twenty eight through thirty one, of course,
- 5:36Speaker 2: but they put language in there for post one junior
- 5:42Speaker 2: designation after the twenty seventh season. So for him not
- 5:47Speaker 2: to be back in twenty seven, it would have to
- 5:50Speaker 2: be the most devastating Injurie knock on with that doesn't happen,
- 5:53Speaker 2: or his regression would be so steep, like James Bradbury.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Now Bradbury won what was an achilles injury anyway, but
- 6:01Speaker 2: before that he wasn't playing well. Right, But here bonn
- 6:05Speaker 2: as Sean Nolet it's really remarkable. I was he a
- 6:09Speaker 2: pro bowler last year? I don't even remember. Yes he
- 6:11Speaker 2: was again, okay, I think.
- 6:13Speaker 1: He was even second team Wallpro last year also.
- 6:15Speaker 2: But yeah, okay, okay, he's still great and he's got
- 6:20Speaker 2: an ideal fixed two and a half. He's just a
- 6:22Speaker 2: fantastic player. He's one of the guys that talking to agents,
- 6:26Speaker 2: that the younger players look up to. And his story
- 6:29Speaker 2: is remarkable. Remember you know he played with the t
- 6:33Speaker 2: J WATTT Wisconsin. I think I think they were there.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Yeah, he played with a couple of guys in the NFL.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I think Benton. Benton was on that team as well. Yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 1: he played with some good, fun seven guys.
- 6:42Speaker 2: So there you go. That's pretty much pretty much it.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I'll be interested to see what happens if Campbell is
- 6:51Speaker 2: not ready in late July when they start for training.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Cap and Trotter's would be the fill in. There's no
- 6:57Speaker 2: question about that. But let's not forget yet. They got
- 7:01Speaker 2: Deante Lawson who is coming back from the ACL injury,
- 7:06Speaker 2: but he is working. Yeah, and he's a guy that
- 7:09Speaker 2: was holly thought of. He's smaller, but mid level. He
- 7:12Speaker 2: was a before the injury. You're looking at round three
- 7:15Speaker 2: through five. Then chance Campbell's there, who's also who's got
- 7:19Speaker 2: really good length?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Right, So so your point, i'm bord is he is
- 7:25Speaker 1: in the second year now of a three year extension.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Next year. Also twenty twenty seven, it would have to
- 7:32Speaker 1: be like the biggest fall from Grace from not to
- 7:33Speaker 1: be on a team. What about twenty twenty eight though,
- 7:36Speaker 1: is that where we start to look and say, well,
- 7:37Speaker 1: because of the adjustment they made, that could be a
- 7:41Speaker 1: post June one. It's a much lesser cap hit and
- 7:43Speaker 1: then by then maybe you're having Jahad Campbell as a
- 7:47Speaker 1: By then he's two years in three years, in two
- 7:50Speaker 1: years as a starter, and maybe one of your younger
- 7:52Speaker 1: guys like Trotter or Smile Mandan Junior is ready to
- 7:57Speaker 1: step in there, because if even continues to play at
- 8:01Speaker 1: a decent level, it's gonna be hard to resign him
- 8:04Speaker 1: to whatever kind of contract he deserves when within that
- 8:08Speaker 1: timeframe you might have had to pay Jay Alex Hunt
- 8:10Speaker 1: and Cooper Gen and Quinnon Mitchell and Jordan Davis and
- 8:15Speaker 1: Jalen Carter and Jail you know what I'm saying. We've
- 8:18Speaker 1: had these conversations about that.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that was on the last couple of shows, folks,
- 8:22Speaker 2: if you missed it. So what they did with first
- 8:26Speaker 2: of all, with Bonnie turns thirty right right at the
- 8:31Speaker 2: end of the season on December thirtieth. So they put
- 8:34Speaker 2: a placeholder salary. It's a real salary. It actually has
- 8:37Speaker 2: a year twenty eight. It's got a veteran minimum salary
- 8:40Speaker 2: for twenty eight. For cap purposes. It's there so if
- 8:44Speaker 2: they do, if they do post you one of them
- 8:47Speaker 2: after twenty seven, it's not like they can't bring them back.
- 8:49Speaker 2: They just have to do a new deal. But the
- 8:51Speaker 2: big thing is Trot Junior's development. He's up after twenty seven.
- 8:55Speaker 2: So as you were discussing this, that's where decision comes
- 8:58Speaker 2: in worth Trot Junior and we've noted the last two
- 9:02Speaker 2: years behind the scenes and practice, he's done very well,
- 9:05Speaker 2: very well. Yeah, he's just very He's small and let's
- 9:08Speaker 2: not forget. Let's not forget Greco Selt just based stole
- 9:11Speaker 2: on tape study in college. Yep, you thought Trot Junior's
- 9:15Speaker 2: take was better than Dean's. We know hasn't worked out
- 9:17Speaker 2: that way. Dean to fight all the odds with the
- 9:19Speaker 2: major injuries and he became elite. Couldn't predict that. I mean,
- 9:24Speaker 2: he was a third round pick, Dean, but he's been
- 9:27Speaker 2: great and we'll see if Trot Junior gets more playingtown. Look,
- 9:29Speaker 2: who knows about Campbell. He's had so many injuries. Jaha,
- 9:33Speaker 2: that is yep, we'll say. I mean he's a starter,
- 9:36Speaker 2: we know that, but he's got to stay healthy, he's
- 9:37Speaker 2: got to stay in the lineup.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I think the Eagles ideally would love Jehad Campbell in
- 9:43Speaker 1: year two here to really step into that role for Nikobe.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Dean Flourish become the next star linebacker, so that if
- 9:50Speaker 1: it becomes a situation in two years where Zach Bourne
- 9:53Speaker 1: is not resignable because of his dollar figure, you have
- 9:56Speaker 1: Johad Campbell as your top off ball linebacker, and then
- 10:00Speaker 1: whether it's Trot Junior, whether it's Mandan, whether it's somebody
- 10:03Speaker 1: else that they have them developed in between, would be
- 10:06Speaker 1: your next major IOB tandem.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and Trout Junior will be the third linebacker this season.
- 10:12Speaker 2: There's no question Mandan Junior will be the four unless
- 10:16Speaker 2: chance Campbell shocks the world. Remember he's got size and
- 10:20Speaker 2: he's had a lot of injuries in his career. But
- 10:22Speaker 2: Bobby King coached him with the Titans and Eagles linebacker coach,
- 10:26Speaker 2: so we'll see what happens. But the cool thing is
- 10:29Speaker 2: how he went from just over over adding veteran players
- 10:34Speaker 2: for well over a decade to be willing to take
- 10:37Speaker 2: that chance. Remember we said a couple years ago they're
- 10:39Speaker 2: the only NFL team do not have a vested veteran
- 10:42Speaker 2: at the tackle, which is unheard of at a position
- 10:45Speaker 2: that's at important as well as we know with the Eagles,
- 10:49Speaker 2: if always had Fletcher Cox and other veterans over the years,
- 10:52Speaker 2: they want young and we'll see what they do for
- 10:53Speaker 2: the future at linebacker, right all.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Right, glad you mentioned that I want to close that
- 10:57Speaker 1: out on that just on that point you just made
- 11:00Speaker 1: about the future of linebacker. If you're planning a catch

- 12:08Speaker 1: healthcare pros. Cammedn apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and
- 12:13Speaker 1: an experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 12:17Speaker 1: The beauty of what they have right now and had
- 12:19Speaker 1: last year is, you know, because the Eagles, they have
- 12:25Speaker 1: a position resource allocation model that they try to follow.
- 12:30Speaker 1: You can deviate it from it, but eventually you know
- 12:32Speaker 1: that you can only spend certain amount of money on
- 12:35Speaker 1: certain positions. Right right now, bond making top market money
- 12:39Speaker 1: means that it's really vital for them to have a
- 12:41Speaker 1: guy like Nikobe Dean who is on a rookie deal,
- 12:44Speaker 1: and then you move over to Johd Campbell on a
- 12:46Speaker 1: rookie deal. And that's why I was saying, like two
- 12:49Speaker 1: years from now, their hope has to be that Johd
- 12:52Speaker 1: Campbell is playing at a real top level, gets good
- 12:56Speaker 1: enough to earn that extension, which would be a good one.
- 12:59Speaker 1: But then you want to have a guy who's more
- 13:03Speaker 1: cost efficient and next to him like they have now.
- 13:06Speaker 1: But who's also playing.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Well, that's the right, right, I understand, But it's just
- 13:12Speaker 2: kind of like this is kind of new normal when
- 13:15Speaker 2: you get the draft right to this level. Well, yes,
- 13:18Speaker 2: how he's third day's got to be better that We've
- 13:20Speaker 2: outlined that many times. But overall, there's a reason why
- 13:24Speaker 2: they keep winning. It's sins. They keep adding young players
- 13:27Speaker 2: who develop. And let's give the coaches credit to you
- 13:30Speaker 2: have a really good coaching staff, and they've particularly on defense.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Their their defensive staff is we know they lost Christian Parker,
- 13:37Speaker 2: but they've got two good young coaches in the secondary
- 13:39Speaker 2: that they feel pretty good about. Plus actually three Ray Anderson.
- 13:43Speaker 2: He is a veteran coach, but he's pretty good too.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Quebec's coach show. Overall, the thing's pretty stopped. Mondon, he's long,
- 13:51Speaker 2: you know, he's tall. I want to see this is
- 13:53Speaker 2: year two for him. He's only been a special teams player.
- 13:57Speaker 2: If if he's the if Campbell's not ready to start
- 14:00Speaker 2: a camp, or they limit Campbell the contact, maybe they
- 14:02Speaker 2: don't have it on team drills early. Let's see if
- 14:05Speaker 2: they give Mond and some snaps with the ones, that'd
- 14:08Speaker 2: be interesting.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I would love to see, you know, because sometimes they
- 14:11Speaker 1: give veterans and Zach Bown A big part of this
- 14:13Speaker 1: conversation is the fact that he's not a spring chicken.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Otherwise we would be saying, hey, if he maybe he
- 14:19Speaker 1: could get a third contract with the Eagles, that's market resetting.
- 14:22Speaker 1: But he'll be thirty one in that last year of
- 14:24Speaker 1: his deal. I would love to see a Trotter Mandan
- 14:27Speaker 1: junior a little tandem Camp. I'm sure Camp will see
- 14:30Speaker 1: it sometime, because you know, you got one guy who's
- 14:33Speaker 1: a really good athlete in Manda, and you got the
- 14:34Speaker 1: other guy, Trotter, who just always makes play so instinctual,
- 14:38Speaker 1: probably like a better version of of TJ. Edwards in
- 14:41Speaker 1: that regard. You know, TJ was smart, instinctual, wasn't a
- 14:45Speaker 1: great athlete, had to drop a little weight and learn
- 14:47Speaker 1: how to really move around the field. I feel like
- 14:49Speaker 1: Trotter's ahead of him in that part, But trot could be.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Trot could probably start. I'm thinking trot could probably start
- 14:55Speaker 1: for some teams just based on how well he's performed
- 14:58Speaker 1: in practices and when he had to step in and
- 15:01Speaker 1: hold his own. But I would like to see that
- 15:03Speaker 1: a little bit of a tandem at some time in camp,
- 15:05Speaker 1: just those two young guys, it could happen.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I mean, you know, well, and Bond's the only veteran
- 15:12Speaker 2: that they really have at this point, right right, Yeah, yep,
- 15:17Speaker 2: and that's pretty much it when you look at their
- 15:20Speaker 2: linebacker situation.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Yeah, we should. By the way, Bobby King we met
- 15:24Speaker 1: when we talk about coaching, this guy has done an
- 15:26Speaker 1: unbelievable job. He deserves to pay raise whatever he's making.
- 15:30Speaker 1: He's done an unbelievable job with this linebacker.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I don't know what I mean. Honestly, Bonk came out
- 15:35Speaker 2: of nowhere. Okay, it's just lightning strikes. If it's just
- 15:39Speaker 2: remarkable Trot Junior. As we said, he's done well in
- 15:42Speaker 2: practice over his two years. Yep.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Nikobe played lights out.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Nikobe was elite. I mean he was really one
- 15:51Speaker 2: of the most remarkable medical stories. When you talk about
- 15:53Speaker 2: list Frank, you talk about turn for teller tendon, I mean,
- 15:58Speaker 2: how do you come back from that back to back
- 15:59Speaker 2: in amazing?
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not like, yeah, it ain't like a hamstring
- 16:04Speaker 1: and a and a and a and a little you
- 16:06Speaker 1: know spring. This was like, these are two big time injuries.
- 16:10Speaker 2: And you give them medical staff. Uh, you have to
- 16:13Speaker 2: give the medical staff credit. I mean, no doubt they
- 16:15Speaker 2: obviously did a great job rehab. So yeah, there you go.
- 16:18Speaker 2: There there's the inside backer or off the ball linebacker
- 16:22Speaker 2: review contractual the way it looks, and that that we'll
- 16:27Speaker 2: see if Mona could push him trot, you need to
- 16:30Speaker 2: be the third backer. But uh, the bottom line is
- 16:33Speaker 2: they've got youth, They've got the one vet, they have
- 16:36Speaker 2: some length. They've got some with Chance Campbell and Jahad Campbell.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Johnsy Lawson, by the way, the undrafted player out of
- 16:45Speaker 2: Alabama is six foot three around. He's just he's just
- 16:48Speaker 2: so I'm a training camp. He's he's wiry, like he
- 16:51Speaker 2: needs to bulk up a little bit, but he can move.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, big, big tall kid talk in that position especially
- 16:57Speaker 1: all right, Well, you know we've got two really big
- 17:00Speaker 1: ones coming up after this, and that's cornerback and safety.
- 17:03Speaker 1: And there's what I don't know. We have to separately
- 17:06Speaker 1: talk and like, do we combine these because you have
- 17:08Speaker 1: a guy like de g who's playing both, or do
- 17:10Speaker 1: we just factor.
- 17:12Speaker 2: The corner playing corner?
- 17:14Speaker 1: Where do Nichols go? Do we do that in the
- 17:17Speaker 1: corner or safety episode?
- 17:19Speaker 2: You know, that's a great question. See, I do wonder
- 17:21Speaker 2: if coaches, I know they don't like they don't agree
- 17:25Speaker 2: with Vick's term. But that's a different position. But it
- 17:28Speaker 2: really is this is not an outside position. I agree.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I think it.
- 17:34Speaker 2: We put them with safeties.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I was gonna say, Nichol is more like safety because
- 17:37Speaker 1: of your run gap responsibilities. You're coverage where you're covering
- 17:42Speaker 1: in the field. So maybe we'll do outside corner and
- 17:45Speaker 1: then slash safety Nickel. Is that that's yeah?
- 17:48Speaker 2: Right, yeah, all right, good free shows.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's funny. All right, Uh, that's uh, that's gonna
- 17:57Speaker 1: do it. For this episode of Inside the Birds, the
