- 0:08Our number 2, Miller Condon, Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:11Network. Travis Hines, Des Moines
- 0:13Register on Iowa State Momentarily.
- 0:16Mike Palm coming up in about 20 minutes, VP of operations at
- 0:19Circus Sports and then Trent's Plays of the Day.
- 0:23Circus sponsors those, those coming up at about 10 minutes or
- 0:26so before 2. At 2, it'll be off the bench
- 0:29with Lucas Strain and Sean Roberts.
- 0:32Right now, Travis Hines joins Trent and I talks to my with
- 0:35State. Oh, Travis Hines, how are you?
- 0:38I'm doing well. How are you 2?
- 0:39Doing OK, got the passport and everything ready to head over to
- 0:42Ireland, no? Apparently not.
- 0:50Are you there, Travis? Hello.
- 0:55We'll reconnect. We will.
- 0:57We'll try it another line. Travis, was it?
- 1:00Was it the question? I don't think so.
- 1:01It was probably yes or no and just, you know, kind of a, an
- 1:05ice breaker, if you will. And I'm going to start with
- 1:08basketball with Travis. There was a media availability
- 1:10earlier in the week and there's something about this T the way
- 1:13this TJ Otzelberger team has been constructed for the
- 1:17upcoming 2526 season. It certainly has piqued my
- 1:21curiosity. I'm excited to see Blake
- 1:23Buchanan, sight see Polita, some of the newbies that are coming
- 1:27aboard and see how they're going to fit in in the Big 12.
- 1:30And we have a pretty good idea that they'll be very sound
- 1:34defensively and we'll see if they can get some shooting.
- 1:36And the fact that Mylan Manchilovich is is opening eyes
- 1:40the way that he is and the confidence is there.
- 1:43And more importantly, the word that I heard from TJ when he was
- 1:46asked about Mylan was the consistency factor because
- 1:50that's maybe what's lacking with his game.
- 1:54I mean, if you can ever get that straightened out, look out below
- 1:57because this dude can fill it up.
- 1:58We certainly know he's got all the skills and we've seen that
- 2:01on display since he was a freshman.
- 2:03Just haven't seen any consistency when it comes to
- 2:07doing that. So whether he's able to do that
- 2:10or not, TJ says he's had a good summer, shooting the ball well,
- 2:13doing everything that he's been asked of.
- 2:15Again, with the parts that return and the parts that
- 2:18they've included. We saw Nate Heisey coming on in
- 2:21a big way last year. So I think basketball is going
- 2:24to be certainly fun to watch. It seems to me that our phone
- 2:27line system is Crash Trent. That would be my guess.
- 2:30Or Travis is having. Some Travis says he has no
- 2:32connection, no service right now.
- 2:34That's what he texted all. Right.
- 2:35Well, you and I'll talk. We'll get Travis another day.
- 2:38If that if that doesn't come to fruition, we can talk about the
- 2:42Iowa State and I started talking about what you were trying to
- 2:45line them up, just what this roster's going to look like in
- 2:49basketball this this coming season.
- 2:51I think that, I mean, we both maybe we're over the top.
- 2:55It takes a lot to be a Final Four team, but we certainly
- 2:58thought that there were times early in the Big 12 season that
- 3:01this team looked the part. I'm excited to see this group.
- 3:04I really am the Buchanan, the transfer 6/10, 6:00 to 11:00 to
- 3:08go in the middle there. Take Chatty's minutes if the
- 3:12Manchilovich is as consistent as TJS letting on, and that's one
- 3:17of the things we're going to work on as much as anything.
- 3:19If he's got another step, that's certainly a positive sign of my
- 3:23book. Well, and he has to, right, if,
- 3:25if this team is going to get to that kind of level, a consistent
- 3:28winner at the highest of levels and being, you know, a fringe
- 3:31top ten team throughout the course of the year, there has to
- 3:35be another step to his game. He's too talented offensively
- 3:39and yeah, on the defensive end. You want to see more
- 3:41improvements there and all those kind of things.
- 3:43I just wonder with him athletically, can he do it with
- 3:47the defenders he's going to see? Yeah, that would be that would
- 3:52be the question, right? I think so.
- 3:55I mean, we saw, we saw glimpses as a freshman.
- 3:57Yes, we saw glimpses certainly last year more than glimpses
- 4:00last year, but doing it consistently once the scouting
- 4:04report is out, once you have, here's the other part.
- 4:09If we see at the beginning of the year that he is taking those
- 4:11steps, well, game plans are going to change and defenses are
- 4:15going to change and what they're doing to him that fade away is
- 4:19beautiful. Back to the basket.
- 4:20He can score at that pull up game 3 point shooting.
- 4:24It's also a volume to thing too. And how often do we have to talk
- 4:27about this with particular players?
- 4:29They have to be more selfish and for this season that's something
- 4:34that not only you can always just click on it just make up
- 4:39right it's background. It's it's not something that you
- 4:42can just easily ignite in some people.
- 4:44There are certain basketball players that would prefer to
- 4:47make the right play, even when you should be a little bit more
- 4:50selfish and. I'd like to see that.
- 4:52And that shot with a hand, with a guy in your face but not right
- 4:55up on you, with 7 on the shot clock, that's better than making
- 4:58a pass and hoping something that happens on the other end of the
- 5:01floor. And for Manchilovich, that's, I
- 5:03think, another part of his game that certainly needs to
- 5:05increase. Absolutely.
- 5:06Lipsy comes back. He's the guy that for whatever
- 5:09reason, when we're talking about this upcoming season, he seems
- 5:11like maybe he's just a constant, right?
- 5:13Just we know he's going to be there and we know what he's
- 5:15going to bring and he's going to try and fight through anything
- 5:17that he's got because this will be it for him.
- 5:20So I won't ask you that difficult question to begin
- 5:22with, Travis. Travis Hines with this Des
- 5:25Moines Register. Travis, Trent and I were finding
- 5:28earlier in the week and we started to what we're trying to
- 5:30line you up. I'm excited to see TJ's team
- 5:33this year because A, we know the returners, yes, Jones and
- 5:36Gilbert, they're both gone, but we know the guys that are coming
- 5:40back. And I love the fact that TJ's
- 5:41pointing out about the consistency and they realize
- 5:44when it comes to Munchilovich, who looks all Big 12 one night
- 5:47and the next night he struggles mightily.
- 5:49If he is more consistent. We know what Lipsy is.
- 5:52I like Buchanan, the transfer coming in from Virginia.
- 5:55I'm not sure there's a significance step back from this
- 5:58year's team to last year's Travis.
- 6:00I know they haven't played a game yet, but it certainly got
- 6:02me interested in this squad. Yeah, without a doubt.
- 6:05I mean, we'll have to see how the pieces fit together.
- 6:08But when you look at what they've got on paper and
- 6:10certainly, you know, headlined by what's coming back, I think
- 6:13they certainly have a chance to be right at the top of the Big
- 6:1512 and relevant nationally again.
- 6:17And I think when you look at the way that TJ puts this roster
- 6:21together over the course of a number of years, I mean, to me
- 6:24it really does kind of feel like a Fred Hoiberg roster where you
- 6:26have those four year players with the support of transfers
- 6:31rather than vice versa. I mean, we all talked about so
- 6:34much about the the transfers with Fred, but it was really
- 6:37guys like George Nyang, Monte Morris, you know, Nas me too
- 6:41long, like you can go down the list like that was the
- 6:43foundation of the team and the transfers other than that second
- 6:46team were really built around it.
- 6:48And when you look at what TJ has this year with Mila and then the
- 6:53transfers around them, you know, obviously Joshua Jefferson
- 6:56coming back as well. Like, that really is what the
- 6:59roster construction really reminds me of.
- 7:01What made Fred's team so good over the course of those like
- 7:04four years after that first year.
- 7:06As we found out, it looks like Mason Williams of the likelihood
- 7:09of him playing this year is incredibly slim.
- 7:11If not putting it at 0, what about the other wing transfer
- 7:14and Dominic Nelson? And I bet they got a little bit
- 7:16later on in the portal window. And where's your expectation
- 7:19level for Nelson and what he's going to provide this year?
- 7:23You know, TJ kind of raised the bar for him a little bit because
- 7:25he's noted like the guys that they've gotten later, at least
- 7:28for them in the transfer portal era here have been really good.
- 7:31Isaiah Brockington, Jaron Holmes, like guys that they have
- 7:35waited on in the transfer portal have been instant impact type
- 7:38guys. And I don't know if that's going
- 7:41to be in the cards for him. But certainly I think that's the
- 7:43hope for Iowa State is that he's a guy that can come in and
- 7:46really make a difference, you know, right from the get go.
- 7:48He's got an interesting text. Looking forward to Cyhawk starts
- 7:51versus Lipsy. Our tweet rather.
- 7:54Yeah, that's got some juice to it, no doubt about it.
- 7:56Well, and then Pleeta, what can you what do you expect?
- 7:59What's what are expectations surrounding Pleeta, who is now
- 8:04in Ames and starting to work as Reign and open some eyes
- 8:08apparently so far in the limited time he's been there.
- 8:11Yeah, TJ mentioned him on Tuesday when he met with us
- 8:15about his ability to contribute right away.
- 8:18And I think when you have, you know, those international young
- 8:21guys, you don't want to get too over excited because there is a
- 8:24significant transition to college basketball.
- 8:27But I think, you know, early on here when the coach is
- 8:30mentioning you as being in the rotation and being a piece, I
- 8:33think there's reason for excitement.
- 8:35And I think it's important for Iowa State, you know, really
- 8:37like we talked about earlier, how they have the foundation,
- 8:40but figuring out the different ways as you can play.
- 8:42And I think if you're trying to make a March, deep March run,
- 8:46having the ability to be versatile, to play different
- 8:49ways to match up differently against teams from around the
- 8:52country is a huge piece of that. And I think play the allows Iowa
- 8:56State, if he is able to get on the floor consistently and be a
- 8:59consistent contributor to play, you know, in a number of
- 9:02different ways. You wrote about Mom Manchilovich
- 9:06at the Des Moines Register, was just reading through that during
- 9:08it. Ken and I were talking before
- 9:10you were able to get that connection back dialed up with
- 9:13us. Just one thing about him is
- 9:15being more selfish and that's something that is not easy to
- 9:18find. Just getting that gear where you
- 9:22know, that shot was 7 on the shot clock with the hand on my
- 9:24face is probably better than what we're going to get.
- 9:26Do you think he has that in him or is it just his personality?
- 9:29Maybe that'll be difficult to get out of him.
- 9:32Well, this is the third year that they've asked him to be
- 9:34more aggressive. So I do think it is it is a big
- 9:37ask and it's interesting because he is a he is a incredibly
- 9:42confident player. And when usually when you have
- 9:44that kind of confidence, like the green light just stays on.
- 9:47And that doesn't seem to always be the case for me.
- 9:49One like and tji think strategically would be my guest
- 9:53called him out a little bit on Tuesday saying that he has a
- 9:55tendency to be a percentage protector, which is not what a
- 9:58player wants to hear. And I think that's trying to
- 10:01coax him to take poor her shots, which, again, most people would
- 10:04be, you know, doing backflips to get that kind of green light.
- 10:07And, you know, I think the thing for meal and too is you just see
- 10:10the potential just dripping off his game.
- 10:12Like there's so much that he can do.
- 10:14He's already a great college basketball player.
- 10:16But if he can take those next couple steps that are so evident
- 10:21with, you know, a higher volume of shots, the ability to put the
- 10:24ball on the deck and create both for himself and for other
- 10:27teammates. Like you can see the All
- 10:29American path there. And I know that's a big bar and
- 10:32a big expectation that I'm putting on him, but I think he's
- 10:34got it in him. And I think there's I don't I
- 10:37don't think frustrations the right word, but I think there is
- 10:39an impatience to see him reach that next level because it's so
- 10:43obviously there in his game with his size and with his skill set.
- 10:47So like, to me, that might be the biggest question for Iowa
- 10:50State this year is, is Neon 2% better than he was last year or
- 10:54is he 10%? Because if he's 10% better,
- 10:56you're talking about an all American.
- 10:58If you're talking 2%, you're probably talking a second or
- 11:00third team, all Big 12 players. So the floor, it's pretty high,
- 11:03but I think the ceiling is significantly higher.
- 11:05Well, let's switch to football and guys, I think might be the
- 11:08most important piece on that offense this year is Ben Bramer
- 11:13to me. We saw glimpses as a freshman.
- 11:16He was really good as a freshman.
- 11:17Sadly, injuries have kept him off the field.
- 11:19Obviously, 167 catches now get their mail in Houston in the
- 11:24NFL. So they got to replace those
- 11:26with Townsend and Seoul and they might be good.
- 11:29A ton of expectations, a lot of hype.
- 11:32But we no, Bramer is good, at least I believe he is.
- 11:34I think he's an NFL player. I really do.
- 11:37And I think he's probably going to have a difficult decision, if
- 11:39I'm right, that his year goes the way it does, that once we
- 11:43get to the end of December that he's going to have a decision to
- 11:45make. Is Bramer maybe as important a
- 11:47piece to this offense as anybody?
- 11:51Well, I think he is the piece that can unlock a lot of
- 11:55different options in that offense because if you have to
- 11:57account for him in the passing game in a real way, like we saw
- 12:00with Charlie Kohler for years at Iowa State, I do think that
- 12:04makes life so much easier for Rocco Beck.
- 12:08You're not only because that's a consistent, you know, safety
- 12:11valve and guy to go to when the play needs help, but it's going
- 12:14to make life easier for those new wide receivers on the
- 12:17outside. It's going to make life easier
- 12:18for the running game. And I just, I do think that he
- 12:21is a guy that can change what that offense is capable of.
- 12:25And I do think like for him, it is just healthy.
- 12:28Like you've got to stay healthy. And I think it's not a question
- 12:31of consistency or talent OR anything like that.
- 12:34If he's on the field and near 100%, he's a game changer.
- 12:37And I think that is a huge weapon for Rocco, Beck, Taylor,
- 12:41Mauser and that Iowa State offense.
- 12:42Over on the defensive side of the football, a question about
- 12:45the other cornerback spot. You got a star in Jantez
- 12:47Williams, who's an absolute stud.
- 12:49They bring in Trey Bell from Lindenwood, not exactly the
- 12:53place that you're normally thinking to get a good football
- 12:55player from now. A lot of people wanted him out
- 12:57of the portal. Is that the expectation though,
- 12:59at that or other quarterback spot?
- 13:01This is going to be Trey Bells job and we'll go from there.
- 13:05I would think so, but I do think the other thing too, that we've
- 13:07seen from John Haycock over the years is that they're not afraid
- 13:10of competition and they're certainly not afraid of cycling
- 13:13guys through, certainly at that position.
- 13:15And, you know, we saw Darian Porter, you know, an NFL draft
- 13:17pick split time a lot of time that corner last year.
- 13:20So I do think, you know, they'd be perfectly happy if somebody
- 13:23just takes that job. But I don't think that they're
- 13:25going to shy away, you know, from platooning it a little bit
- 13:28because I think they like to do that.
- 13:30That keeps guys fresh and healthy.
- 13:31And as we saw last year, you know, when injuries strike,
- 13:34they, they tend to and that defense and can really wreak
- 13:37havoc. So I, I think that would be the
- 13:39preferred outcome, but I also think that they feel pretty good
- 13:42about the options that they've got beyond there too.
- 13:44I. Want to go back to the offense
- 13:46with you, Travis, in the running back position because I keep
- 13:48hearing about River Peppers. It's a hard name to forget.
- 13:51So once you hear it, it sticks with you a little bit, right?
- 13:54Jack's in the same way, but in particular Peppers.
- 13:57Is he the guy that's going to compete to take maybe some SAMA
- 14:03snaps? I love Carson Hanson, he'd
- 14:05rather run through you and that's, you know, injuries are
- 14:08are going to be a factor with him.
- 14:09But what about the two freshmen running backs and their
- 14:12potential on this upcoming season?
- 14:16Yeah, I think Campbell loves competition at the running back
- 14:19position because it brings the cream of the crop to the top,
- 14:23right. And I think we saw it, you know,
- 14:25go back to year one. I can't believe it's now a
- 14:27decade ago, but we thought Mike Warren was going to be, you
- 14:30know, the next great Campbell back and incomes David
- 14:33Montgomery. And then you go to Breece Hall.
- 14:35It wasn't supposed to be Breece Hall that was going to carry
- 14:37that mantle. It was going to be Jairal Brock
- 14:39and incomes Breece Hall. And I think again, when you're
- 14:42looking at Campbell's running backs, like all bets are off for
- 14:46the competition is always open. And I think that is going to be
- 14:50certainly the case this year. I think Carson Hansen certainly
- 14:52is the guy that is going to, you know, have the job to start
- 14:56with. And Abu Sama has certainly shown
- 14:57things over the last couple of years that he's going to get an
- 15:00opportunity as well. But I don't think anybody is,
- 15:03you know, written in ink at that position because they recruit it
- 15:07well and they give guys opportunities.
- 15:10Our final 15 seconds. Do you when Do you know when
- 15:13fall camp is going to start with the game on the 23rd?
- 15:15That's what like 5 weeks away I think.
- 15:18When? When will they get to camp?
- 15:19Has there been a date released publicly?
- 15:22July 23rd is the first day of camp, which is the next week.
- 15:25Summer for everybody. Yeah, it's incredible.
- 15:28Media Day is a week from today. Unbelievable.
- 15:30Oh, that's good news too. Thank you, Travis.
- 15:32Appreciate it. We'll talk to you down the road,
- 15:34my friend. Thank you, Travis.
- 15:35Ions. Yep.

- 16:00Mike Palm joins us next. Miller and Condon on KXNO.
- 16:04It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 16:08All right, welcome back, Miller and
- 16:20Condon. Iowa Sports Radio Network with
- 16:22you until the top of the hour. Trent's plays of the day circus
- 16:27sports sponsor those those coming up here in about 15 or 20
- 16:31minutes. Let's head to Las Vegas circus
- 16:34sports. Mike Palm is the VP of
- 16:35operations. The Mountain West football Media
- 16:38days either wrapped up or in the process of wrapping up.
- 16:42I saw the setup yesterday watching a little VC and saw a
- 16:44couple of the coaches interviewed.
- 16:46Mike joins us. Mike Trenton, Ken, who'd have
- 16:48thought, right? And I know this has come up a
- 16:50lot over the last couple of years as as much as the NCAA
- 16:55would. The boogeyman was Vegas and
- 16:58they're holding major events out there, media days and at actual
- 17:02hotels. It's it's come a long way, has
- 17:05it not? Yeah, I mean, last week was Big
- 17:0912 and then the Mountain West just wrapped up here at Circa
- 17:13and then you guys will be out here for for Big 10.
- 17:16So three in a row, the guy that's the chairman of the
- 17:18College Football Committee followed me on the desk on on
- 17:22Wednesday on the Mountain West Network and then had a long
- 17:25conversation with Derek at Legacy Club about the
- 17:29championship game, you know, in late January of what would be
- 17:3427, being in Las Vegas and planning that event.
- 17:37So it's it was come a long way. Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 17:40Good stuff. By the way, are you going to be
- 17:42Are you at work on Sunday? I probably am not going.
- 17:47To be at work on Sunday. But I'm not 100% sure yet.
- 17:50All right, well, I'll look for it because I get there earlier
- 17:52than everybody else at 1:15. So I guess I want to where I
- 17:55want to go is it's been a slow week.
- 17:58What was it like in the book after the All Star game on
- 18:02Tuesday night? I know you do wrote more right
- 18:04on the Home Run Derby than you do on the actual game Tuesday,
- 18:07but what was your take away on what we witnessed on Monday and
- 18:11then on Tuesday with the game ending the way that it did?
- 18:14Well, Monday, my take away is it's in my mind.
- 18:21I cannot accept the fact that Major League Baseball will tell
- 18:26you that they can determine that Cal Raleigh's longest home run
- 18:31in the first round was 2cm longer than Rookers.
- 18:35Yet set standing in Des Moines where you guys are, you can't
- 18:40watch the Cubs or White Sox or Twins or Brewers or Cardinals or
- 18:44Royals. That is not congruent in my
- 18:46mind. They can't figure that out.
- 18:48Tuesday is controversial because some books like us said this is
- 18:53a nine inning result that we graded everything of push.
- 18:56Other books created the National League winner and the American
- 18:59League of losers. So I know what's it a nice
- 19:03moment. I guess which forward did was
- 19:05great. I thought the game was a pretty
- 19:08decent game. I think this challenge system
- 19:11with balls and strikes, look, if you're going to give people X
- 19:15challenges, why would you take them away if they're right?
- 19:18You should get so many wrong until you're out.
- 19:20But the other thing is we're going to take away the art of
- 19:23framing pitches. I think we're going to take away
- 19:25the art of catching. And I think you reward catchers
- 19:29who are lazy and don't frame pitches if you're going to do
- 19:32this system. I mean, that's my arguments on
- 19:34both sides of it for me I guess. So during this break in the
- 19:38schedule, do you see people that are jumping in second-half bets,
- 19:42win division, win World Series, you know, those kind of things.
- 19:45I know you guys have a ton of those things out there at Circus
- 19:48Sports. Is is that where you see people
- 19:50that are maybe investing a little bit more?
- 19:52They're taking a break. They don't have their daily
- 19:53handicap that they have to do, so they get involved in the
- 19:56futures market. And if that's the case, have you
- 19:58seen any particular team that people were betting on?
- 20:02You know, we've seen a little bit of the division bets trend.
- 20:04I was looking at since Sunday night what we've done in right.
- 20:08So we're seeing, you know, there look, I mean the Tigers, there's
- 20:13nobody betting on the on the AL Central.
- 20:16And so you're seeing the biggest market has been the NL East
- 20:23where Mets and Phillies money right going back and forth.
- 20:26Cubs got re bet a bit. I it actually went up.
- 20:31I mean, it was Milwaukee was Milwaukee was down to I think
- 20:35plus 220 and they're back up to like plus 240.
- 20:40So the Cubs have taken a little money during this break.
- 20:44The Mariners have taken a little bit of money in the ALS.
- 20:47And then and then you go back and forth with the Yankees, the
- 20:50Red Sox actually taking some money both in terms of of in
- 20:55terms of AL futures and in terms of the East.
- 20:59I think you still get a decent price on Toronto, who I think I
- 21:02favor over the Yankees here. But you're still getting the
- 21:04plus, what, 13135 number on the Blue Jays to win?
- 21:09Football wise, NFL, let's talk about the sign ups.
- 21:12First of all, last time we spoke you were trending up
- 21:15significantly over 20% in the regular Survivor contest.
- 21:19I saw Grandissimo had a few more entries trickle in this week and
- 21:23we know that. I think it's going to be up
- 21:25around 30, which is where a lot of people did.
- 21:28And then even in millions you're up a little bit.
- 21:30Is the is this week been the same?
- 21:33Survivor is almost 40% now year yeah, this this week is
- 21:39irrelevant kind of because there's not a lot of people
- 21:41here. But heading, heading I I think
- 21:45the last report I saw was Monday was 40 percent, 39.8%.
- 21:50So that's pretty significant, right?
- 21:51If you can extrapolate the 40% on top of the 14,000,000, that
- 21:55gets you to like 19719 eight. So and then I think we're up to
- 22:006th in the Grand Decimo as well. So continues to be meant.
- 22:03And of course, people making their NFL wagers in, in terms of
- 22:08really focusing on win totals right now is the largest segment
- 22:11we're seeing. We're talking a little earlier
- 22:14and trying to who's going to beat the Eagles in the NFC?
- 22:16And we brought up Detroit. One team that Ken and I I think
- 22:19like but don't love is the 49ers, favored in 15 of their
- 22:23seventeen games coming up this year.
- 22:25Yet it's an aging roster. Purdy, is there another level to
- 22:28him? There's a lot of things that
- 22:30have to go right, including Christian McCaffrey staying
- 22:32healthy. What are your thoughts on the
- 22:3449ers? And if people aren't betting the
- 22:36Eagles, who is that team in the NFC that you're seeing a lot of
- 22:39action on? Well, I think the 49ers could be
- 22:43average and win 12 or 13 games because of that schedule.
- 22:46That's the problem there. So they probably win the
- 22:48division. What can they go anywhere?
- 22:50I think the divisions better. I think the Rams are better.
- 22:53I think the Cardinals are better.
- 22:55You know who's gotten interest in the last two weeks?
- 22:57Tampa Bay. Have they?
- 22:59Well, they bring back everybody offensively, right?
- 23:02I mean, and a pretty good offense with me.
- 23:04If you believe in Mayfield, let's not forget this.
- 23:10This team played well against the best teams, right?
- 23:12They went into Detroit. They shouldn't be Kansas City at
- 23:16Kansas City, you know, Bulls goes for two.
- 23:18I I don't think Tampa's that far away.
- 23:21And yet, you know, you've seen also people, I think that the
- 23:26sharp team in that division, though, in terms of like win
- 23:29totals is Carolina. I see people betting ladder in
- 23:32the overs going 65 and a half, 6 1/2, seven and a half.
- 23:36Some people betting them to win the South.
- 23:39A very popular bet for them to make the playoffs though as
- 23:43well. So that's interesting.
- 23:45But a team that really wasn't on my radar until the last 10 days
- 23:48or so, Tampa Bay has taken some money.
- 23:50Well, a team in their division, the Saints, they must be, along
- 23:54with the Browns, the team that's predicted to have as the
- 23:57shortest price as far as the fewest wins.
- 24:01Would that be fair to say? And and who else is in that
- 24:03conversation? Giants.
- 24:05Oh, sure. Yeah, Giants and Tennessee,
- 24:09those are the four that take money and that I'm I'm not
- 24:12convinced the Saints don't want a tank.
- 24:14I'm with you. Right.
- 24:16And try and try to get Arch or maybe even Nutsmeyer, the local
- 24:20guy there. I just could say they're both
- 24:21local because of the grandfather's connection with
- 24:23Arch. But yeah, so I would, I favor
- 24:28Saints in that market because I think of any of the teams,
- 24:31they're probably more motivated to be worse.
- 24:34Couple of bets up on the Circus Sports Iowa app right now is
- 24:38taking a peek at AP Coach of the year.
- 24:40You're not going to give it to an Andy Reid, you know, so you
- 24:42can dive a little bit deeper and there's always prices there.
- 24:45And then Ken brought this up a couple of weeks back, that
- 24:47protector of the Year award, What did that thing feel like?
- 24:50It's just set up for a disaster. I mean, betting on an offensive
- 24:53line, how do you measure it? Those kind of things.
- 24:55Just the award in general, it's so goofy.
- 24:57You guys come to the decision to put that out and give people the
- 25:00ability to bet on it. Was was that one that took a lot
- 25:03of conversation with you, Benson and the crew?
- 25:06Well, and then they have this small committee that takes it
- 25:09right. It's much different.
- 25:11It's not the same group that wrote votes for all the other
- 25:14year end awards. So there's a little bit more
- 25:18risk to it. But you know, if we can write
- 25:21tickets, we're not going to get killed on it obviously.
- 25:25So I think it was a good thing just in terms of people having
- 25:29interest in it and I think it's a good thing overall if they
- 25:31figure it out. But I mean, there's the risk is
- 25:35small, so why not? I know that there'll be no Hard
- 25:39Knocks bump this year because they're already bumped.
- 25:42It's the Buffalo Bills, they're going to be the spotlight.
- 25:45But quarterback was just released Micah and I watched I I
- 25:48was enthralled by it. I loved it.
- 25:50I wish there was more episodes. I don't think that you there's
- 25:53such a thing as a as a bump. But I'm reminded watching it
- 25:57just how damn good Joe Burrow is and the fact that they got so
- 26:01hot at the end. And if they wouldn't have had
- 26:03those, you know, confounding losses, including what week 1 to
- 26:06New England. This guy should have got I think
- 26:08been closer to the to Josh Allen as far as the MVP.
- 26:12I get his record was it there and you have to make the
- 26:14playoffs. But what about Joe Burrow and
- 26:17the MVP market? I don't know but but I think he
- 26:22shares blame with Taylor for their being so bad in September.
- 26:25It's every year. Yeah, true.
- 26:27Not just some blip. I mean, like, what?
- 26:29What's their record? 2 and eight or three and it's
- 26:33abysmal for five or six years. They're just horrible.
- 26:36Weeks one and two bad and then they always have to come up.
- 26:39Is that I know part of it was him being healthy, but is he in
- 26:42shape every year going into to camp and starting the year?
- 26:45Because it's not like their defense is giving up 35 points
- 26:49to the New England's and these teams that are upsetting them in
- 26:52Week 1. It's because they get beat 2117
- 26:54and all that, and the offense doesn't seem to come around
- 26:58until the end of September or October, so that that team's
- 27:02going to have to score 50 points a game.
- 27:04Ken, I mean that that's just the reality of it.
- 27:06And you know that the MVP comes from a one or two seat every
- 27:09year. So it's not good enough to win
- 27:1111 games to the MVP. Interesting way to look at that.
- 27:16Hey, Mike, I haven't had a chance to talk to you here
- 27:18recently. Couple weeks ago, the bill that
- 27:21was passed by the representatives, the OBBA with
- 27:25how it goes for everyday or sport bettors.
- 27:28I, I know professionals, this is going to be a huge impact on
- 27:30them. I think I heard physics say he
- 27:32won't bet this year if this actually comes to fruition.
- 27:35And there's other people that are like that for the everyday
- 27:38for most of our listeners out there, the nickel and dimers out
- 27:40there. Does this bill, does it mean one
- 27:43iota of a difference for the way that US normal sports bettors
- 27:47bet? Unless you win a contest because
- 27:50you're not. You're not Who's filing schedule
- 27:53A on the. Professionals.
- 27:55It's got to look at who's scheduled, who's I'll file
- 27:58schedule A. If you win a contest or you
- 28:02know, if you're a horse player, it's different because you're
- 28:04going to hit tickets that are 300 to one.
- 28:07Just betting sports. We're not hitting any tickets
- 28:09that are 300 to one. Have you ever hit a parlor that
- 28:12was 300 to 1? I haven't no.
- 28:14So it's contest or horse players really.
- 28:16That's only going to affect for everyday betters.
- 28:19At the same time, it's frustrating because we have a
- 28:20lot of pros that bet at Circa and we're trying to figure out a
- 28:24solution. The problem is Titus bill is not
- 28:26going to get to a vote because Johnson is not speaker.
- 28:29Johnson is not going to let any amendment to the big beautiful
- 28:31bill get to a vote. The only way that's going to be
- 28:33able to correct this is new tax legislation that they might
- 28:36introduce, that they might introduce in, in September.
- 28:40So it's, it's frustrating though, and, and it's just as an
- 28:44industry debating with other people who there, you know,
- 28:46there's certain people in this industry that think it's totally
- 28:49relevant. They don't want the Aga spending
- 28:51time on it. So it, it is exhausting going
- 28:54through it. I mean, I'm on the phone with
- 28:55legislators every day. Interesting.
- 28:58I want to go back to the NFL for my final question for you.
- 29:01Trent's not a believer. I am Kevin O'Connell can make
- 29:05chicken salad out of chicken. You know what?
- 29:07Seemingly every year. Doesn't matter who his
- 29:09quarterback is. And I have faith in JJ McCarthy.
- 29:12I'm not sure I have faith in him to win the MVP. 67 to one, it's
- 29:16circa. 65 to 1, I should say it's circa.
- 29:19The division is, I think, up for grabs.
- 29:22The Lions come back a game or two.
- 29:24I think the Bears arrows pointing up.
- 29:25I don't know what to make of the Packers.
- 29:27Where are you on JJ McCarthy? I know you guys have moved the
- 29:30win total from 8 1/2 to 9 1/2. And when it comes to the
- 29:34Vikings, I like them and I'm a McCarthy believer.
- 29:37More so, I'm a KOC believer. I think when it's all said and
- 29:42done, we might think of KOC as one of the great head coaches of
- 29:45all time. I really believe that.
- 29:48He's certainly a quarterback whisperer.
- 29:50He certainly is. He squeezed every oz he could
- 29:52get out of darn old. The shame was it just ended the
- 29:55last two games and he has faith. He I have pretty good sources in
- 30:00Minneapolis and he is very high on this team.
- 30:03He says it's his most talented team.
- 30:05Look, they got better in the spine of the middle of the both
- 30:08their offensive line and their defense.
- 30:10Without a doubt. I think they did a good job with
- 30:12with the free agency and if McCarthy is healthy, I believe
- 30:18this team has a legitimate shot to win the division.
- 30:21The only team I don't think will win the division is the Packers.
- 30:24I'm with you. That's the only one.
- 30:26I don't think that's a shot. I think every other team has a
- 30:28shot at the division. Who knows how much the
- 30:30coordinators are going to mean. And I don't think that people
- 30:33tell me, ah, the Lions knew Ragnar was leaving.
- 30:35I don't believe that. I don't.
- 30:37They lost a lot of depth in their line, which is the
- 30:39strength, and I think they lose a lot on the offensive
- 30:42coordinator side. The Bears could be really good.
- 30:45Hey, Ben Johnson might be great. They put this kid Williams in a
- 30:49position where I mean, if he is as good as people think he is,
- 30:52then he's going to really excel this year.
- 30:55So I think the Bears have a lot of upside.
- 30:57I'm high on the Vikings, so I got him over 8 1/2 / 9 1/2.
- 31:02I bet them to win the NFC when they were still 18 to 1.
- 31:04Now they're down to around 12:50, so I'm going to take a
- 31:07shot with them. You're going to tell me they're
- 31:09going to win 6 less games the last year?
- 31:11I just don't believe. It I don't either.
- 31:13One last thing will be there for Big 10 Football Media days for
- 31:16you next week, and I beat the market for once.
- 31:20I had USC, that was one of my first bets that I had at 30 to 1
- 31:24to win the Big 10. They are down to I think 18 to 1
- 31:26currently at Circa, and I'm looking at one more.
- 31:29It's the Michigan Wolverines. Now.
- 31:30I know you guys normally take a lot more Michigan money than
- 31:33other places because of Derek's background.
- 31:36If they get one of the two either at Nebraska or at USC,
- 31:39one of those two, this team I think is going to be playing to
- 31:42get into the Big 10 championship game in the final week of the
- 31:46season against Ohio State. That schedule is not daunting.
- 31:49The road games are not overly difficult.
- 31:51I like the Wolverines. Obviously, Underwood's going to
- 31:53have to hit. Am I crazy there and should I
- 31:55jump in now when they're currently 12:50 as opposed to
- 31:58wait? I think there's tough teams to
- 32:02overcome. I just don't.
- 32:04Everybody says Penn State, they in the playoff.
- 32:06Penn State's going to be in the final.
- 32:08Penn State's, and then you got Ohio State that's going to run
- 32:11it back. And then you got, I mean,
- 32:13Oregon's still lurking out there, too.
- 32:14Let's not forget they were #1 as you playoff last.
- 32:17Yeah. Never.
- 32:18Nobody wants to talk. I think the Big 10 is really
- 32:20tough. I don't mind taking a few shots.
- 32:22If you get to the title game, obviously you can monetize your
- 32:25ticket. What's incredible to me is these
- 32:27people who are betting Drew Allen for the I mean, they
- 32:29should be they should be committed.
- 32:31They should absolutely be committed to an insane asylum.
- 32:34If you've bet 1 penny on Drew Allen for Heisman and maybe I'll
- 32:37look like it's the worst take in my life, but I'll I'll lay
- 32:40everything I have that he isn't in the conversation at all.
- 32:43Oh. Man, good stuff.
- 32:45Mike Pom, VP of operations at Circus Sports.
- 32:47We'll see you on Sunday if you're there.
- 32:49Got dinner at Berry's on Sunday. Sunday night, very excited about
- 32:53doing the whole Circa experience.
- 32:54We'll see you next week, Mike Palm.
- 32:56If we don't see you Sunday, we'll see you on Monday or
- 32:58Tuesday. Thanks for jumping on with Trent
- 33:00and I have a good weekend, Mike. Thank you.
- 33:02Yeah, looking forward to hanging out next week.
- 33:03Thank you. Yeah.
- 33:04Ditto Mike Palm, VP of operations at Circa Sports, a
- 33:08Dubuque born and raised in Dubuque, By the way.
- 33:10I've been mean to say this. I found a brewery.
- 33:12I didn't find it. It's been there.
- 33:14A lot of people found it, but I stumbled across a brewery called
- 33:19Seven Hills 7. And it's a.
- 33:21Restaurant and they let us take Jet and then we ate outside and
- 33:25food was fine. The beer is unbelievable,
- 33:28really. Oh, and you know me and Stella,
- 33:31I felt like I was running around on her.
- 33:34And I don't want to buy it here locally because I don't know how
- 33:36far. If it sat on shelves for very
- 33:38long. I think I'm going to make a
- 33:39special trip back to Dubuque. Want to get a fresh for all for
- 33:42of all? Things beer and I'm going to
- 33:44load up. I want to get the brand what
- 33:45it's called. It's called Town Clock.
- 33:48Town Clock. That is Seven Hills.
- 33:50If there's anybody listening, and I know there is in eastern
- 33:53Iowa, Seven Hills, you've got a gem there in Dubuque.
- 33:57It's a pilsner or lager, but good God, it's good.
- 34:01Seven Hills Beer or Seven Hills Brewery.
- 34:04Anyways, we'll. Make a stop across the river I'm
- 34:07sure too. Yeah, I'd just love to breathe
- 34:09that Illinois. I know, I know.
- 34:11We'll take a time out. Trent will join us, so with his
- 34:14plays of the day. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 34:19It's our final segment of the week, The drive.
- 34:21The drive is no more. The off the bench certainly is.
- 34:24And Sean Roberts and Lucas Strain will be coming off that
- 34:27said bench at 2:00. Miller and Condon, circus sport
- 34:30sponsors the plays of the day. Next it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 34:33Network. I'm Miller and Condon.
- 34:34Welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 34:37Midway through two at Wrigley Field, the Cubs up on the Red
- 34:41Sox 3 zip say a Suzuki A3 run Homer in the first inning.
- 34:45What a year he's having. Yes, Remember one of the talking
- 34:48points was he what doesn't want to be the DA he was?
- 34:51Pissed. He was pissed, yeah.
- 34:53What a what a boost to his career.
- 34:55The other big talking point. I remember thinking back to the
- 34:59beginning of the baseball season, You remember when
- 35:00torpedo bats were a thing? Oh, absolutely.
- 35:03Still around. Still around.
- 35:05It's just not the fact that the Yankees hit, what, nine home
- 35:08runs on Opening Day or something crazy against the Brewers.
- 35:12Everybody thought, Oh my God, what are they doing?
- 35:14They're cheating now. They've been around for a.
- 35:16While one of the stories of the year has been the play of Cal
- 35:19Rally, who uses. A torpedo does he?
- 35:22And he was one of the guys that took off early and wasn't around
- 35:26for the the swing off, not the Home Run Derby, the swing off at
- 35:31the end of the All Star Game. Nobody knew.
- 35:35Nobody knew, right? We've never seen it before.
- 35:37It's been in place, I guess, for three-year.
- 35:40I'm kind of hoping next year's All Star game is tied.
- 35:42You want to see it again? They got it right for once.
- 35:46I think they did. I think they did.
- 35:47Well, let's see if you can get it right for once.
- 35:49How about a sweep? How many games have you got?
- 35:51I got 4. Let's go four and O.
- 35:53Four and O. That would stack it up.
- 35:55So are you betting just all baseball?
- 35:58Baseball 4 baseball? No.
- 36:00You want to know in the CFL this year?
- 36:01Well, I've been known as Mr. Canadian Football.
- 36:03You. Really have.
- 36:04Well, maybe we'll try to just keep undefeated for the year.
- 36:07No, you know, I'll bet another time or two this summer and jump
- 36:10aboard. So I'm playing your Blue Jays to
- 36:11open things up. It's Bassett, and I'm not
- 36:16Verlander. You mentioned he's going to win.
- 36:18Time to hang it up. I wasn't ready to quite go there
- 36:20with you. Still got an ERA South of five,
- 36:22but I'm going to grab Bassett. Lay the -1.
- 36:24Which is first win be against the Jays?
- 36:27Wouldn't that just be apropos after your Barry give a week
- 36:30ago? Really.
- 36:32Give me Tampa -120 Taj Bradley against old Morton, better team.
- 36:38Lay the -120 there and then go with two dogs.
- 36:41I want the Cardinals tonight. Fought has been terrible.
- 36:45Yep, I will grab plus 1/14 with Polente in that one.
- 36:49Phoenix, right? It is in Arizona, yes.
- 36:53And finally, I'm fading my twins.
- 36:57You are right out of the chute. Right out of the chute of the
- 37:00awful rotation for the Rockies, Caffrey Lins at least the most
- 37:04competent. Yeah, he's the one name you
- 37:06might know. If you're looking at a win loss
- 37:08record, not very good at 1:00 and 10:00, it's.
- 37:09Going to be in the 90s, balls going to be flying I think, of
- 37:12course. Looking at it over that over in
- 37:15fact at some places, how much is it 11 and. 1/2 Jeez.
- 37:18Yeah, they're expecting rounds. Chris Paddock has been brutal
- 37:20lately and it's a fate of him more than anything.
- 37:23That's the way that I handicap. So I will take the God awful
- 37:26Colorado Rockies plus 146 against my God awful Minnesota
- 37:31Twins. So Scotty Scheffler is now tied
- 37:33for the lead. Here we go.
- 37:35He's 6 on the runners round today, the leader's 9 under him
- 37:38and Matt's fit. Matt Fitzpatrick, he's is he
- 37:41just going to draw it clear? I don't think so.
- 37:44I hope not. I hope there's some intrigue, by
- 37:46the way. No, it's intriguing to me, and I
- 37:47did not know this. The two Danes on the
- 37:50leaderboard. Yeah.
- 37:50Hoggard How do you say they're? Guard.
- 37:53They're twins, they are. I didn't know that.
- 37:55Yeah, Rasmus. Is that Rasmus?
- 37:57And Nicholas Nikolai. Yeah, he's been around, Has he?
- 38:02Yeah. Rasmus, not quite as much.
- 38:04How about, I mean, you don't. There's can't be very many twins
- 38:07on tour. No.
- 38:08And Brian Harmon, let's get him out of there.
- 38:10His slow play drives me. Absolutely not.
- 38:12It's time for the lead. Moving along, hopefully he
- 38:14shoots 78 tomorrow all. Right, that's going to do it for
- 38:17us. I'll see you in Las Vegas.
- 38:19That sounds great. OK, it does, doesn't it?
- 38:21We'll hear the off the bench. It's coming up next.
- 38:23Lucas and Sean have a great weekend.
- 38:25Talk to you from Vegas next week.
