- 0:00I'm Jackie Green. I'm the owner and promoter of Beyond the Darkness, and
- 0:05I'm Dex her partner, the co promoter will Beyond the Darkness. Beautiful guys,
- 0:10thanks for joining us today. Thank you my absolute pleasure. So Beyond
- 0:16the Darkness returns to the back room in Anelie on September fourteenth for a bumper
- 0:20night of music featuring in Grave Sentiment, Void Matter, Crave, in Effigy
- 0:24and heaps more bands. Mate, Like, September might still be five or
- 0:27so months away, but the way this year has been going, it's it's
- 0:29going to go by pretty quick. Oh absolutely, yeah, yeah, what
- 0:34what we're where the end of April now, so it creeps up fairly quick.
- 0:38Yeah, And I think it's important to point out here with these two
- 0:41because like with the I guess, with the current state of festivals coming through
- 0:45Australia and the way COVID has left everything, like a lot of people these
- 0:48days are leaving it to the last minutes to buy tickets for things like this,
- 0:50But when it's a local show like this, it's important for people to
- 0:54get out there and buy tickets earlier and so you can sort of engage what's
- 0:57going on at Bit the Bitch Nationals, it doesn't really matter, but with
- 1:00a local event, it's really important to get behind and get your tickets early.
- 1:03Yeah, exactly right. But we noticed with even with last year's event,
- 1:06that left probably to bed the last month and then the tickets just started
- 1:08flying out the door. But yeah, it's often good to secure them now
- 1:14because then you know you've got them and you can get them at the fairly
- 1:19good price. Yeah. Now, before we start talking about the actual day,
- 1:23I think it's important to discuss the reasons behind Beyond the Darkness. So
- 1:27sorry to bring it up, Jackie, but can you please tell us a
- 1:30bit more about the day and why you started it? Yep, okay.
- 1:33So on the twenty second of April twenty twenty two, my husband David died
- 1:38of a sophageal cancer. It just came on. He had a thirteen month
- 1:45battle. We tried everything, threw everything at it, and then he got
- 1:49a secondary cancer. Once most people get a secondary cancer, there's not much
- 1:53you can do. So I lost him. I really didn't know what I
- 1:59was going to do. I suppose my whole world was turned upside down and
- 2:05we just floated the idea we wanted to do something to really celebrate his first
- 2:10year anniversary, and so I've floated the idea on Facebook and said to people
- 2:16what do we think and Brian said, let's put on the show, and
- 2:21so it was born from there right. As much of events like this are
- 2:27great for raising money for charities such as the GI Cancer Institute, it's just
- 2:30important as important that they raise awareness as well, because no matter how bulletproef
- 2:36we think we might be, like the things like cancer like they don't discriminate,
- 2:39No, they don't. That don't matter who you are, what age
- 2:44you are. David was only forty seven, so I think part of that
- 2:52the awareness is people in our sort of age group, in that forties to
- 2:57fifties age group, to not be complacent about things. If something is not
- 3:02right, go and get it checked out, damn straight. Now, this
- 3:07for me the second beyond the Darkness after a successful debut last year. So
- 3:12is it any easy to put together with a benefit of twelve months experience or
- 3:15is it still a pain in your heart? As all the musicians know that,
- 3:17I deal with clucking musicians. That's all I can say. Chris,
- 3:23It like hurting cats. You learn a lot of different things, different tricks
- 3:30of the trade, and you know how to deal with things differently, but
- 3:34it's always putting things together. Is does this work with this? Is?
- 3:39What are we going to do in terms of that band and that band do
- 3:44they mesh together? And finding you like to put on originals bands. You
- 3:49get a lot of people that come through who have their covers bands and they're
- 3:53great, but it's always great to showcase that original talent for sure. Yeah.
- 4:00Important lately that there's been a lot of backlash about a lot of festivals
- 4:03and a lot of promoters like when things have gone par shap when they put
- 4:06on But it's not an easy thing that whether you're it's a smaller scale with
- 4:11pub bands to a major international event. Like there's so much that goes on
- 4:15behind the scenes when you're trying to put a festival together and all the support
- 4:17people can give you, it all helps. Definitely, Oh absolutely, And
- 4:21we thank you too, Chris, because getting it out there is important.
- 4:29That's not easy. We learnt that last year. It was not easy.
- 4:31Well, we're all here for to help each other out, isn't it.
- 4:35So when you're putting together the light up like what sort of criteria you've got
- 4:40when it comes to selecting bands, Like you mentioned, you've got the covers
- 4:42come in. You've mentioned like they've got to sort of flow together. But
- 4:45it's not just a matter of just going I like them, them and them
- 4:47and them. Is it like there's a bit of a process involved, exactly
- 4:50right, Because I mean you can like twenty different bands, but they might
- 4:54not suit the show on the night, they might not gel together and they
- 4:58don't flow. To go to try and chew who's the most supposed current bands,
- 5:02those that are going to draw your crowd, ones that appear good on
- 5:05stage, have great stage presence, and everything like that, because we have
- 5:10seen some bands. I'm not mentioning names or nothing, but we're like,
- 5:14wow, really you're wondering why you're not getting anywhere? Have it? You
- 5:16put some fucking effort in and maybe someone might throw you onto a show because
- 5:20there's some bands out there that just don't get it. I've seen some bands
- 5:25on festival lineups and that they don't do any promotion at all. They just
- 5:28get there on the day and you know that they bring five extra people.
- 5:30So bad. But in this day and age, it's all about everyone working
- 5:34together. And that comes from the bands on social media promoting it, people
- 5:39word of mouth talking about it like it's sort of it's it's the music industry
- 5:43is coming back together again, I think. But it's still going to take
- 5:46a lot of sustained effort from everybody getting involved together to do it exactly.
- 5:49And there's no room for ego in this process either, because if you've got
- 5:54an ego, I just won't deal with your plane. It's simple and bands
- 5:57copdate email. When that's it, I'm done with you see it later.
- 6:02Things. It must sort of give you a lot of satisfaction as well to
- 6:05see bands like Engraved, who sort of played at an earliest slot last year
- 6:10and this year they've proved that much that you've offered one of the one the
- 6:13headline petitions, so thinks like that got to give you a bit of personal
- 6:15satisfaction to your help and nurture that sort of scene as well, exactly.
- 6:19And we followed him a few times, we saw a couple of their shows
- 6:23in Brisbane, we drove down to the Gold Coast and then we actually pulled
- 6:27Dan aside and we offered him the spot of the headliner, and he was
- 6:31blown away and said well, we know what you did for us last year,
- 6:34and we know you're growing now and you're actually going to grow more.
- 6:38So we thought Barrett Bang, let's give him the headline, and that's exactly
- 6:40what we did. Good stuff, And this is it, like you've got
- 6:44how many bands and there so eight ten bands over the days, So are
- 6:47you putting them all on the one big stage at the back room or are
- 6:49you going to have the two things on the main stage. Yep, I
- 6:53was so hoping you were going to say that. That's how we ran with
- 6:57the seven last year, and there was minute change. It was worked beautifully
- 7:01and in that time we usually run actions and stuff like that, trying to
- 7:05raise money and things like that. So as much as you're like, in
- 7:09principle it's a great idea to have one band stop and there another band stop,
- 7:13and they're like, you just don't get a break order, you know,
- 7:15like old time is like me, I need to go and sit down
- 7:17and recuperate between bands. I can't just bounce from under the other we hear.
- 7:23We so just say someone can't make it on the actual day on September
- 7:30the fourteenth, but they still want to make a donation can't they do that?
- 7:32And how they can? There's an immemoriam page on the g I can
- 7:38stitute it's an institute website and they can actually go in there. It's under
- 7:45Dave dash Green and they can donate directly to that page. Very and we
- 7:50sort of touched on this before too, but it's also a fair bit cheaper
- 7:55if you do buy tickets in advance. I think like from every it's what
- 7:58twenty five dollars pre sale or forty dollars on the door, which is a
- 8:01significant increase. So where can people go to buy tickets and find out more
- 8:05information? Go straight to the Facebook page, straight to the Instagram page,
- 8:11any of the posts have all got the hyper links. Has got to hit
- 8:13the links or go to the bios. The links are all there. Yeah,
- 8:16and it's it's that simple. Yeah, I want to go through the
- 8:18other way. It's on the Live at your Local page and on the otis
- 8:22page as well. Beautiful. Now, before we wrap up, guys,
- 8:26we're going to have to give you a show a bit of a plug too,
- 8:28Like you guys have got the Odds Fest with Dix and Jackie O the
- 8:35Yeah, I know, I'll how to get into that bit too. But
- 8:37the jacket says, so what is it? Is it a podcast? Is
- 8:39it a music says? What do you guys do? It's a live radio
- 8:43stream that's streamed from here straight to the US of A. Okay, and
- 8:48broadcasts all around the world. Wow, and what the interview band little this
- 8:52sort of stuff. We play the latest hard rock and metal releases each time
- 8:56that we're on because we used to do the show weekly, but it just
- 8:58become too much of ature. I mean, I've been doing the show myself
- 9:01now for twenty years. Jackie jumped on board just under two years ago.
- 9:07And but yeah, we just played the latest music that's out there because a
- 9:09lot of people don't know the awesome music that's out there today. There's a
- 9:13lot of bands that don't get airplay. So we did talk to save people
- 9:16at the bottom of listening to someone talk through their music radio. We don't
- 9:22want to talk over the song, so we just don't do it. Yeah,
- 9:24right, And how to how to band submit music to here and then
- 9:28get on we'll get airplay they can get they can get hold of us through
- 9:31Spotify because we're on Spotify as well. There's got to look for the os
- 9:33fest with Dex and Jackie G and they can submit through there because the email
- 9:37address is up there. Heretiful goes all right, well, thanks for time
- 9:41tonight. Just been a proasure speaking with it. Beyond the Darkness is on
- 9:43September fourteenth at the Backroom in Adelie. It's a benefit concert for the gi
- 9:48Cancer Institute. But above all it's a great day with great music and even
- 9:52greater people. So cant you tick us early because that doesn't autly holds five
- 9:56or six hundred in the backroom, so hopefully we get get a bit of
- 10:00a decent turnout. Yeah, caps so yeah, it's a great venue.
- 10:05To it and describe it. I think it's probably one of Brisbane's best venue's
- 10:07is a little bit further out the most, but I love to get out
- 10:09there and check it out. I think we'll say I don't want to travel,
- 10:13but it's a great venue and get on it.
