- 0:10Hour number two, Miller Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:14Network. We take you until 2:00.
- 0:16Coming up toward the bottom of the hour, Wade looking Bill will
- 0:20join us. Former Hawkeye, Wade looking
- 0:23Bill Trent and I will take a look at Ohio State and Iowa
- 0:25tonight. Music means let's head to
- 0:27Chicago. Centurion Stone sponsors our
- 0:30weekly conversation with David Kaplan.
- 0:32Hello, Capper. How are you, pal?
- 0:34I'm good man, Wade looking Bill. That dude could shoot the
- 0:37basketball. Yeah, indeed.
- 0:39I'll. I'll remind him that.
- 0:40I'll let him know that you remember his career back in your
- 0:43coaching days. He could.
- 0:44Good, good dude. What year would he have been
- 0:47graduating? 91, right, I think around there,
- 0:51yeah. So I was probably at Carver
- 0:55Hawkeye, seeing him play when I was with the well, it would have
- 1:00been 8889. It was just Pacers.
- 1:05I would have been with the Indiana Pacers at that point.
- 1:08And I know I was at Carver Hawkeye multiple times.
- 1:11I know that I was, you know, doing a ton of scouting of the
- 1:15Big 10. So I saw that dude play.
- 1:18Absolutely. So Wade's final season was 9293.
- 1:21Was it that way? OK.
- 1:22He was inserted into the starting lineup after the
- 1:25passing of Chris St. and this is opens a window as we like to do
- 1:29from time to time here. Just about a month pass from his
- 1:32the anniversary of his passing. Do you remember scouting Chris
- 1:36St. and what you thought about him, what kind of NBA player he
- 1:39was going to be? Yeah, he was going to be a
- 1:41really good player. I absolutely remember that.
- 1:45That tragedy was Luke Wrecker there too.
- 1:49Not then at some point. That was later, right?
- 1:52Yeah, later, yeah. But I remember Chris St.
- 1:56That dude could play basketball. That was just a horrific
- 2:00tragedy. Awful.
- 2:02No, no doubt about it. Let's switch gears cap and let's
- 2:05talk Well, let's talk football and I guess stadium first and
- 2:11foremost before we get into I I listened to Ben Johnson
- 2:13yesterday. He moved way up in my book.
- 2:15I'm starting to really like this dude, but the but the the
- 2:18stadium cap. Where are we?
- 2:20What's the latest? Is Indiana A still a a a real
- 2:24possibility, or is Arlington Heights back in play?
- 2:27What's the latest gap? I think both things can be true.
- 2:31Is Indiana a possibility? Yes.
- 2:35Do I think they're going there? No, I don't.
- 2:38People in Indiana get mad when they hear me say that.
- 2:40Why not? And I was on the air yesterday
- 2:43going, OK, let's just let's just think this through for a second.
- 2:48They don't have anywhere near the infrastructure.
- 2:51They have got to do so much money and infrastructure to get
- 2:56this thing where they want it. That's AB.
- 2:57They're like, yeah, maybe they'll move Hallis Hall here,
- 3:01too. That literally the mayor of
- 3:03Hammond literally said that, oh, yeah, they're going to bring the
- 3:05practice facility down here, too.
- 3:07And the Bears had to put out a statement right away and then
- 3:10tell us, I think the Tribune 1st.
- 3:12And they went to the Sun Times. We're not leaving Lake Forest.
- 3:15Let's just be clear where the stadium is.
- 3:18We're still trying to decide. We are not moving and we had
- 3:22people literally calling in mad at me.
- 3:24Why couldn't they live in Dyer or Chesterton?
- 3:28I'm like, OK, Ryan Polls is at the Columbine.
- 3:31You think he's negotiating a free agent contract with, let's
- 3:35call it Trey Hendrickson, who will say, let's see, I've got
- 3:38Dallas after me. They got out in the burbs in
- 3:41Texas and pay me millions. I could go play for the LA Rams
- 3:46and live in Beverly Hills or I can live in Hammond, IN.
- 3:50Not going to happen. No shot.
- 3:52And I don't believe the stadium will be there.
- 3:55Pritzker came out our governor here and said yesterday, yeah, I
- 3:58feel like we're moving towards an agreement, but then it's up
- 4:01to the legislature to approve all of it.
- 4:05OK, that's all well and good. They've got to get that figured
- 4:09out. I'm not.
- 4:10I can't predict Illinois politics because it's
- 4:13ridiculous. But if he is already confidently
- 4:17saying, yeah, we're moving towards an agreement, don't you
- 4:21think he'd have his ducks in a row?
- 4:22He's worth his salt at all as a governor.
- 4:25And if that dude can't get the stadium that he wants to get
- 4:29figured out approved, how's he going to run for president?
- 4:34I mean, and I know every move he makes, the whole editorial here,
- 4:39everything he does is about how it sets him up for a
- 4:42presidential run. So he could say all he wants,
- 4:45I'm going to stand up to the billionaires.
- 4:47I'm not going to give in. You are a billionaire.
- 4:51Who are you fooling? So I think they're going to be
- 4:53in Arlington Heights. I'm betting it's Arlington.
- 4:56Heights The family owns the Hyatt chain of hotels, right?
- 5:00Yeah, his. It's not.
- 5:03The whole Pritzker family does, yes.
- 5:06But the guy who was the chairman of the board who just had to
- 5:09resign over the Epstein files last week, that's his cousin.
- 5:13OK. Interesting.
- 5:15Arlington Heights, let's say it plays out that way.
- 5:17They figure out the politics over there.
- 5:19Everything happens infrastructure wise.
- 5:22You mentioned that on the Hammond side.
- 5:24What needs to happen there? More of a population base going
- 5:27that way. Got all the suburbs out towards
- 5:29the West. I get all that infrastructure.
- 5:32What would need to happen outside of building a stadium?
- 5:34What else needs to happen around Arlington Heights?
- 5:38Well, you'd have to widen Illinois Route 53 to the West.
- 5:42You'd have to obviously widen the all the exits and then I-90,
- 5:49which is right there. And then you'd have to figure
- 5:52out what you're doing with the 326 acres that it sits on.
- 5:56I mean, a stadium doesn't need 326 acres.
- 6:00So you're going to have, you know, with Tommy Waddle first.
- 6:03Nick, how about this? Tommy Waddle nicknamed it when
- 6:06this was first purchased, even speculated 4-5 years ago it was
- 6:13Paradise. He said that'll be Paradise, the
- 6:15bear and the bears. He never did anything with that.
- 6:18The bears trademarked. Oh, no.
- 6:22Yeah, in October they announced, yes, we have trademarked the
- 6:26name Paradise. And I'm like, Oh my God, Waddle,
- 6:31you're a moron. How did you not trademark that?
- 6:34And then you could sell it to them.
- 6:36Yes, yes, but unfortunate, unfortunate soul cap will know
- 6:42when, when, when, when do you think that ultimately this
- 6:45decision will come down? Well, the Indiana legislature is
- 6:50out of session. I think Friday.
- 6:56I think Friday is their last day and they want a decision like in
- 7:00two days. I don't think we're going to
- 7:02have clarity in two days. I don't, but I think tomorrow is
- 7:07a huge day because they're going to vote on the megaprojects bill
- 7:11in Illinois and that megaprojects bill that the Bears
- 7:15have been pushing to get approved would give the Bears
- 7:19tax certainty. And for people out there
- 7:22wondering, well, why, why do they need tax certainty?
- 7:24The highest tax bill of any NFL team is the LA Rams.
- 7:29Now they're in a very high, very valuable land, very valuable
- 7:35people that live in the area there.
- 7:37I get it, it's California. They pay $8.5 million in
- 7:42property tax. Big tax bill right now, without
- 7:46the the mega projects bill, the Chicago Bears are looking at a
- 7:50tax bill the way this state is run here, north of $100 million.
- 7:54Oh my God, you told me that. Last week and no certainty on
- 7:58what the number could get to. So they need tax certainty.
- 8:01They're saying we'll pay you, we'll pay our taxes.
- 8:04We're not asking for a handout on that.
- 8:07And they're the Bears are not asking for $1.00 to build the
- 8:10stadium. They want the infrastructure
- 8:13paid for because it will benefit the region, not just the team,
- 8:16the games that they have. And they'll put 2 billion toward
- 8:21it and then they can finance the rest.
- 8:23And then they want tax certainty because you can't run a business
- 8:26going for a tax bill. This year was 70 million and
- 8:29next year they say it's going to 110.
- 8:31You can't run a business that way.
- 8:33Sports book operators would like to know that tax certainties
- 8:36before they get there and then all of a sudden things changed
- 8:39with the tax rate anyway, as we learned over there, that's for
- 8:41sure that. Side of the river, Hey, onto the
- 8:44field with the Bears. And I guess a little bit
- 8:47interesting. Earlier today, it was reported
- 8:50by Brad Briggs that the Bears have granted permission for
- 8:53Tremaine Edmonds to seek a trade.
- 8:56What's going on there? They got to move the money, they
- 8:59can't pay him, and if they can't find a trade partner, they're
- 9:02going to have to release him. Wow.
- 9:04So yeah, he's a young guy. I mean, he's not in his 30s.
- 9:10He's a really good player. He played 10 games, was playing
- 9:12at a Pro Bowl level and got hurt, was able to get back in
- 9:16the playoffs. Wasn't himself.
- 9:17But he he's a good dude, great athlete, very competitive guy.
- 9:23Was leading the team in tackles when he got injured.
- 9:25And you got to move the money. He's a $15 million savings on
- 9:32your cap. And right now they're negative.
- 9:34They literally are negative on the cap.
- 9:36Now they'll make some, you know, key strokes with a couple of
- 9:40contracts and they'll get themselves into the positive
- 9:45range. But that's why yesterday they
- 9:47asked Ryan Polls about Ben Johnson.
- 9:50I mean, about the DJ Moore and Ben Johnson, and both guys said
- 9:54I can't promise he's going to be here.
- 9:56We got cap issues. His cap hit number this year,
- 9:59coming $28.5 million. He's too much, too much, and
- 10:03you've got Luther. Burden, now Luther's probably
- 10:06your best receiver, but Roma Doonsday was pick #9 two years
- 10:10ago. With Caleb, it's a massive year
- 10:12for him. If he had a bad year this year
- 10:14because he was injured, if he does not have a big third year,
- 10:20well, now you're starting to call that a busted pick.
- 10:22And he's too talented to be a busted pick and too good a guy.
- 10:25You thought for sure they'd pick up that fifth year option when
- 10:28that time is upon him? Hard to say.
- 10:30You know, you mentioned Ben Johnson cap.
- 10:32I get the seasons over the pressure of a regular season and
- 10:35a playoff run that's behind them and it's yet to ratchet up
- 10:38again. I would.
- 10:39I found him really refreshing and in a way funny that I didn't
- 10:44know that that was part of his makeup yesterday was talking
- 10:47about the Packers and the hatred.
- 10:49It's, I think it was Mike that had the peace with Ben Johnson.
- 10:52I thought that was really well done and showed a side of Ben
- 10:55Johnson quite honestly. Not that I need to see every
- 10:57side of everybody. I didn't know it existed.
- 11:00I just thought kind of this guy's kind of, you know, built
- 11:02differently kind of an A hole type of thing.
- 11:06But but I saw some personality from Ben Johnson yesterday.
- 11:08How about that? Yeah, I loved it.
- 11:11I absolutely loved it. And you know, Florio said, So
- 11:16what is this here? Is it for shows because of the
- 11:19rivalry? Nope.
- 11:21I don't like the Packers and they shouldn't like us.
- 11:24And that's good for the rivalry. And then Florio said, all right,
- 11:27if Matt Lafleur called you and gone, what's the deal here, bro?
- 11:30I mean, what are we doing? He said, Nope, he hasn't.
- 11:34We have no relationship. And I do not like the Green Bay
- 11:37Packers, and that's OK. Absolutely.
- 11:40I did too. I thought it was great.
- 11:42You mentioned cap. They need pass rush, they need a
- 11:45defensive line. Hendrickson.
- 11:46He's already said his name. Yes, that that would go a long
- 11:49way certainly in getting to the quarterback.
- 11:51We know that dude absolutely can't do it.
- 11:54What else is at the top of the heap right now as we're going
- 11:56through a combine, all the interviews that are happening,
- 11:59we see Ben Johnson, he's all over the place.
- 12:01He's on Sports Center yesterday. He's all over what What else is
- 12:05the needs both draft wise and free agency you're looking for
- 12:08outside of upfront both ways. Good question, because obviously
- 12:14you've got to get more pressure on the passer.
- 12:16That's probably one on their list because you watch the Super
- 12:22Bowl. What did Seattle do?
- 12:23They were able to just drown Drake May and pressure.
- 12:28Now you also have to be able to stop the run.
- 12:31If you're getting rid of Tremaine Edmonds, you're going
- 12:33to need a linebacker for sure. You're going to probably replace
- 12:37Andrew Billings, who looks like he's expecting triplets.
- 12:41He just put too much weight on and so they're going to probably
- 12:45try and move on from him, which means you need a nose or a three
- 12:49technique. Montez Sweat will be back.
- 12:53So you need one rush edge. And then I expect Kevin Byard to
- 12:57be brought back They as a first name, but Ben Johnson talked
- 13:01about when he's talked about rebuilding the culture there.
- 13:04Well, and I got guys like Kevin Byard and DJ.
- 13:07But I think Kevin Byard will get resigned.
- 13:11I don't think Brisker will you back that too many concussion
- 13:15issues is up for a big contract extension.
- 13:19I think they'll look to replace him.
- 13:22They'll spend money on Byard. They probably need to get
- 13:26another corner because they're going to let nation right go.
- 13:29They can't afford him. So and then you have to have a
- 13:33left tackle. Now there's all these rumors
- 13:35that Trent Williams may be let go by the the 49ers because his
- 13:39cap number for this year. See, what happens is when you
- 13:42keep restructuring deals, you kick the can down the road.
- 13:46Well, we'll just put a huge number four years down the road,
- 13:49then we'll worry about it then. Well, then all of a sudden
- 13:52you're like, oh God, we got to pay this Brock Purdy, how much?
- 13:56And it's eventually you got to move on.
- 13:59Well, he's going to be 38. He's a 12 time pro bowler, A5
- 14:05time All Pro is cap numbers, $38 million for a left tackle.
- 14:11He's he's outstanding player, getting old, probably has one
- 14:15maybe 2 years left. And so if they let him go, the
- 14:20Bears have a gaping hole at left tackle.
- 14:22Ozzy Trupello is probably out for the year.
- 14:24He might get back by December. Well, he won't have trained.
- 14:28He's not going to be ready to play left tackle on a Super Bowl
- 14:31team if they think they can make a run.
- 14:34Theo Benedict's a free agent. He's OK.
- 14:36I don't know if they'll bring him back.
- 14:38Braxton Jones is what he is. He's not a starter on a Super
- 14:42Bowl contending team. So do you move a ton of money to
- 14:47go, all right, what's it going to take to get Trent Williams in
- 14:50here? And if they do, that's awesome.
- 14:53But then how are you spending on Trey Hendrickson too?
- 14:57So you got issues. Yeah, you, you do.
- 14:59The Bears win totals. What captain?
- 15:01I see 9 1/2. Is that what it is 9 1/2?
- 15:04Was last I saw. Yeah, 9 1/2 Obviously we we know
- 15:08who the opponents will be. We don't know where they are,
- 15:10but the schedule is a whole lot more difficult after winning the
- 15:13division last year. 9 1/2 seem right on the surface, not
- 15:17knowing how the schedule is going to shake out at this
- 15:19point. Yeah.
- 15:20I think it's a fair number because Caleb's going to be
- 15:23better. Ben was gushing about how much
- 15:26of a jump he expects Caleb to take.
- 15:28But again, they've been, they've been getting calls for Tyson
- 15:31Baigent. I don't trade him.
- 15:34I don't trade him. I I said on the air, OK, you
- 15:38want them, I want a second round pick.
- 15:40I'm not giving them away for a four and a six.
- 15:43I'm not. He makes 4.75 million this year.
- 15:48He's got a two year extension. So you got in the next two years
- 15:51at a total of $10 million and incentives.
- 15:53If he plays in a perfect world, he never sees the field, that's
- 15:58fine. But on a team that thinks they
- 16:00have realistic got at going deep in the playoffs, you better have
- 16:05a competent backup or you can forget about it.
- 16:08And so Ryan Paul said yesterday, yeah, we've been getting calls
- 16:12and you know, he's due to be a starter and we don't want to
- 16:14hold him back, but what's it going to cost to replace him?
- 16:19Who am I getting? Am I getting some 40 year old
- 16:22guy? Case Keenum's 39, great to have
- 16:25in the room as the third guy, but he's not ready to be the
- 16:29backup on a team in the making a playoff run.
- 16:31So for 4.75 million, where are you getting someone as much as
- 16:37they like Tyson Bajon? So I don't think they're trading
- 16:40him unless somebody called and said we'll give you a pick 26,
- 16:44you want it, we need him. Detroit.
- 16:47Even better, believe he's their starter.
- 16:49Detroit and Green Bay both 10 1/2, the Vikings 8 1/2 round and
- 16:52out that division as far as wind totals.
- 16:54So Detroit and Green Bay are ahead of the Bears.
- 16:56They are. Yeah, 10 1/2.
- 16:58OK. Well, Detroit's got a soft
- 17:00schedule. They get a fourth place schedule
- 17:02cap, so that factors. In they're getting Decker back.
- 17:04And they're they're getting a lot of guys.
- 17:06Back. That'll help.
- 17:07Yeah, indeed, definitely will. Yeah.
- 17:08Over to the Florida. And a little injury news over
- 17:12there, Tyler Austin, And I'm like Tyler Austin.
- 17:14So I saw that the Cubs had signed him.
- 17:17How did it? Well, he played for the Twins.
- 17:18He was a different guy at that point.
- 17:20He's gone over and played in Japan.
- 17:22Was going to what, be a backup? So is that what Conforto is
- 17:25going to be? Conforto now with an inside
- 17:27track of getting the backup for a space job and and being an
- 17:30extra bat off the bench. And is it as big of a deal or
- 17:33maybe I'm just looking at the wrong corners of Cubs Internet.
- 17:36People are freaking out about a backup first baseman.
- 17:39Well, how severe is the injury? Said pretty significant.
- 17:43Where was it? What did I say?
- 17:46Was it 6 knee surgery? Knee.
- 17:49Surgery, yes, knee surgery. But I can't.
- 17:52I can't find a timeline. So if you tell me he's going to
- 17:56be back by may not that significant, they like him.
- 18:01I mean, look, he was a million and a half dollars signing out
- 18:05of Japan. He used to be a big time Yankee
- 18:09prospect and Michael Conforto hit 199 last year for the
- 18:16Dodgers. So he's got an opportunity.
- 18:21Can he come in here and be 1/5 outfielder, maybe.
- 18:25Be your backup first baseman? Maybe.
- 18:28But that's probably the least of their worries.
- 18:31I don't think it's a major deal. It wasn't going to be one of
- 18:35your starters. It was rarely going to play good
- 18:38pinch hitter, they thought. So I don't think it's a
- 18:41devastating thing. You don't go, oh God, how are we
- 18:45filling that role that you can do?
- 18:47If you said, oh, heaven forbid Edward Cabrera or Kate Horton,
- 18:53now you got issues. Yeah, great, Counsel said a
- 18:55couple hours ago, apparently underwent patellar tender
- 18:59displacement procedure. It going to be out months,
- 19:01whatever that means. So we shall see.
- 19:04What What have you seen? What have you seen so far, Cap
- 19:07from this Cubs group as they, what, 4-5 games into spring
- 19:11training? Now what?
- 19:12What have you seen? What concerns you at this point?
- 19:16I don't think there's anything that concerns me right now long
- 19:20as they stay healthy. That should be a 939495 win team
- 19:28if they're healthy. Now if you tell me they get
- 19:30racked by injury, well, then you got problems.
- 19:33But I, I, I really, really like this team a lot.
- 19:38And the Cubs, by the way, they're over under number.
- 19:41Boy, you hope you bet the over 88 1/2 so you think they're.
- 19:45That's what it. Is that DraftKings 88 1/2?
- 19:47You've got them sailing over that.
- 19:49Yes, I I absolutely going to get on my DraftKings count when we
- 19:53hang. Off what about the Pirates cap?
- 19:55This is a team that Trent, both Trent and I like this team not
- 19:57to win the division, but maybe to maybe to be what the Reds
- 20:01were last year. Where are you on the Buckos?
- 20:05They spent a little bit of money.
- 20:07Look, anything that every fifth day can put Paul schemes out
- 20:10there. Then they got Mitch Keller.
- 20:12Like they have a chance to have a decent decent.
- 20:16I don't think they're A-90 win team.
- 20:18I don't think they're a post season team, but I do think they
- 20:21have made progress. I like Bubba Chandler, who's
- 20:25coming up and he's going to be part of that rotation.
- 20:27You're Quitty. He's a veteran that's been
- 20:28around around going back to Houston and.
- 20:30Connor Griffin, their shortstop. Remember that.
- 20:32Name O'Neill Cruz. Just fun to watch.
- 20:34He's built differently. What you get there.
- 20:37Yeah, Going to be a fun one there.
- 20:39Milwaukee isn't bothersome at this point.
- 20:41I know you in general just don't like Wisconsin, so just seeing
- 20:44what they're able to do and cutting.
- 20:46He has a. House there, right on the lake.
- 20:48Absolutely. Is it just, Is it annoying to
- 20:51see what the Brewers do year after year?
- 20:54Yeah, they're like an irritant. Yeah, no question about it.
- 20:58I don't know how they do it every year.
- 21:00They have a very good organization.
- 21:01Great manager. Tell anyone their manager is
- 21:04awesome. I will not ever tell anyone
- 21:07that's not a well run organization.
- 21:09My question is that Nacio can't take all his money with him.
- 21:14He's never pushed his chips in ever.
- 21:17Even when he had the best record in baseball last year, he's
- 21:20never gone fall in. Go get me that guy.
- 21:24And at some point, you either have to or you become the team
- 21:29that trades Freddie Peralta to the Mets and moves on from Caleb
- 21:34Durbin and trades this guy and you just become a farm system,
- 21:38which that would be hard for me to be a fan of.
- 21:40Speaking of farm systems caps, let's talk about the White Sox
- 21:43before we let you go. Our buddy Sean Roberts is.
- 21:47He's all over at 4:00 and 1:00. Great start to spring training.
- 21:50I get it. They don't.
- 21:51They haven't had much to cheer and he's being facetious,
- 21:54obviously, but where I I I believe ESPN 1000 when you do
- 21:58the morning show, they carry the games.
- 22:00Or did your thoughts on the White Sox?
- 22:03Yeah, we are the home of the White Sox.
- 22:04I actually think they're headed in a very positive direction.
- 22:09Look, they have Brayden Montgomery, who's the
- 22:12centerpiece to the the gear crochet deal.
- 22:15He's going to be up at some point this season, maybe June,
- 22:17July. They have Edgar Carroll and
- 22:20Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teal and Chase Mydrop.
- 22:25And then they won the lottery. They got the number one pick and
- 22:28it's a really good player. This time it's Rock Selowski.
- 22:33I mean, that name fits with the South Side of Chicago.
- 22:36He's a shortstop at UCLAA. Lot of people think he's going
- 22:39to be an All Star in the big leagues.
- 22:42So are they there yet? No.
- 22:45They have Murakami, the kid they signed out of Japan.
- 22:48They're getting better. This is not the two year ago 41
- 22:52win White Sox. I think they're like a. 70. 475
- 22:57win team. I would bet the over on them.
- 22:59I think they're over. You'd have it right there. 65
- 23:031/2 Sixty. Six.
- 23:04They are 66 1/2. Yep, 66 and. 1/2 I bet the over
- 23:08got you 100%. Good stuff Capper, you gave us a
- 23:11lot of time here today. I missed you the last couple of
- 23:13weeks. So great to catch up with you
- 23:14pal. We'll talk to you next
- 23:16Wednesday. See you buddy.
- 23:17I'm glad I'm not calling you from Puerto Vallarta.
- 23:19Yeah, yeah. No kidding.
- 23:21Wow, isn't that the truth there? Two weeks ago.
- 23:23Would you go back today? Would you go back to no, no, I
- 23:27lost your schedule there. I've been there a dozen times.
- 23:31I've been to Mexico 30 times. Could I ever go back?
- 23:34Yeah. Today.
- 23:35No, not a chance. No hey real quick the WNGWGNTVI
- 23:40mean they let how many half of their staff go yesterday cap.
- 23:44They, the guy they let go of nine on air front facing people,
- 23:50one of whom was in the middle of his shift, and they called him
- 23:54in and said you're gone. And they made the lady, Micah
- 23:58Mater, finish the show by herself.
- 24:01Yeah, look, that that is a horrifically unprofessional way
- 24:07to do business. We're Chicago's very own and so
- 24:10we're not. And I worked for WI know you did
- 24:13and were owned by Tribune and they were always very loyal to
- 24:16their employees. Next Star.
- 24:18I have never worked for them. I never will work for them the
- 24:22way that they handle it. I know it's business.
- 24:24The way they handled it was so disrespectful, so low class that
- 24:31I wish the people that are still there well but the management
- 24:34team a joke. That's how I found you.
- 24:37I needed a Chicago guy and I went on WGN radio and I asked
- 24:41for the sports department. And you answered the phone in
- 24:441999 or 2000. We've spoken every week since,
- 24:47seemingly. How about that?
- 24:49Yeah, I was a hell of a phone caller for for me.
- 24:50Good stuff, capper. Thank you, pal.
- 24:53Yeah, we'll talk to you next week, pal.
- 24:54Thank you. Good to talk to you.
- 24:56True story. WGN Sports, please.
- 24:59The David Kaplan. Yeah.
- 25:01Ken Miller. I'm in Des Moines.
- 25:02I do it to him. I was doing mornings then with
- 25:04Bob Dyer. I need somebody to talk Chicago
- 25:06sports. You want to do it?
- 25:10Yeah, he did it and still does it.
- 25:11Worked out pretty well. Yeah, I'll say we'll take a time
- 25:13out. Wade looking.
- 25:15Bill will join Trent and I on the other side.
- 25:17We'll talk Ohio State and Iowa tonight. 8:00 tip.
- 25:21Carver Hawkeye, it's the Iowa Sports.
- 25:24Nori Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever
- 25:27you are listening in the state of Iowa.
- 25:28Grateful that you are. We'll take you to win till a
- 25:30little just before 2O clock trends, plays of the day.
- 25:33By the way, coming up, circus sports sponsor those at the top
- 25:36of the hour, Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain.
- 25:38They'll come off the bench and take you until 5 O clock.
- 25:41Let's talk Hawk, shall we? They're on the hardwood tonight.
- 25:44Carver Hawkeye 8 O clock tip is that BTN game tonight Trent you
- 25:48know FS1. Not off the top of my head, I'll
- 25:50find. It we'll find it.
- 25:51Indeed we will. Wade looking.
- 25:53Bill will help us out with maybe with the television channel for
- 25:56the game, but certainly the game itself.
- 25:58Wade, Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 25:59How are you, Sir? Not know what the TV is?
- 26:04Can't help you? BTNBTN Scott.
- 26:07There you go. Big 10 Network, yeah, When you
- 26:11look at this Ohio State outfit, they really don't have a marquee
- 26:15win. Fair to say.
- 26:16When you look at what they've done in the Big 10, there's been
- 26:18there's really no power team. Maybe the Wisconsin game couple
- 26:22of weeks ago that that was a nice win.
- 26:23But when you watch Ohio State, obviously Thornton's the guy.
- 26:27Is it as simple as that? Is he?
- 26:29If they can stop him, limit him, maybe I was got a pretty good
- 26:32chance to win the basketball game.
- 26:34This is this is a really important game.
- 26:38How states that they got some talent.
- 26:40You know, I think they're just I don't know if if if if if the
- 26:44dealer, if their head coaches is on the hot seat.
- 26:47But you know, they almost beat Michigan State the other night
- 26:51and the royal kid didn't play. I think he was sick or
- 26:54something. But but Bruce Thornton is as
- 26:56good as anybody in the in the big 10.
- 26:58I mean, he is a dangerous dude and he has he is a terrific,
- 27:02terrific college basketball player.
- 27:04But you know, it's this is one I was going to win.
- 27:07You know, this is they're favored by what, 7-8 points the
- 27:09home game. This is one that if they're
- 27:12talking about, you know that that finishing eighth in the Big
- 27:1510, let's say, and get that double by this is one they got
- 27:18to have. Wade downhill offensive players
- 27:22embedded issue for this team now for almost a month.
- 27:25I mean, we go all the way back to the USC game and Cam Woods
- 27:28who scored what? What is it 26 points all season,
- 27:30scored 33 and since then they have not been able to stop guys
- 27:35off the bounce. Is it the defensive philosophy?
- 27:38Is it just a lack of physical ability to do it?
- 27:41Why is Iowa struggling so much on the defensive end and
- 27:44specifically stopping guys from getting to the rim?
- 27:47Yeah, it's a good point that that that kid from Maryland
- 27:50really lit him up that I was hoping they were going to get
- 27:52that little left-handed blanket on his name.
- 27:55But, you know, I, I think it's, it's a combination of things.
- 27:58I I think one of the biggest things that they don't have that
- 28:02you see with other teams is somebody that can protect the
- 28:05rim. It, it, it is so hard to guard a
- 28:08guy 25 feet from the basket like, like they want to do, like
- 28:12a lot of teams want to do. And it's it's so hard to keep
- 28:15that guy from going by you now you do your best.
- 28:18But if you've got like, like when I played, wait, wait a 0
- 28:21back there so you can be more aggressive guarding tighter 22
- 28:25feet in the basket because you had the, you know, first team
- 28:28all big fan leading shop locker guy back there to clean
- 28:31everything up. And that's one thing that I
- 28:33would just does not have is anybody to protect the rim.
- 28:36What are you seeing from Cooper Cuts as of late?
- 28:40You know, I like it. I like him.
- 28:42You know, I sometimes I think he'd be better off coming off
- 28:44the bench just to give him change things up.
- 28:47You know, he had some, he has some really good halves, it
- 28:50seems like. But if he could kind of put it
- 28:52together. And again, he's just a freshman,
- 28:56You know, you, you, you really forget what, you know, Bennett
- 28:59Sturst is 23 years old and you got maybe 22, but you got guys
- 29:03that have been playing college basketball for a long time.
- 29:06He's played 26 games in his college career.
- 29:09So I like what what he brings. He doesn't look as athletic as
- 29:15he was last year for some reason, but I I wish you know
- 29:19again, what what little I know, I wish he wouldn't rely on on
- 29:22that 3 quad as much shot fake, try to go to the basket, but
- 29:26he's going to be a great player. He's going to get there
- 29:28rebounding wise. A goose egg against Wisconsin,
- 29:31had the same no rebounds against Maryland for a guy that's
- 29:35playing the four as much as he is, certainly need more than 0
- 29:38in that kind of category when it comes to rebounding.
- 29:40And Wade, you're a guy that was a good rebounder.
- 29:43What does it take, what does it take to to get that mindset that
- 29:46you're going to go and get those boards?
- 29:49I think it comes down to a couple things.
- 29:50One, if you're a, if you're a 611 freak athlete, jump out of
- 29:54the gym, you have a huge advantage.
- 29:55There's no question. I think what I was got to do
- 29:59better is just is just that playing get down and box
- 30:04somebody out. You put you box somebody out,
- 30:07especially early in the game, you give them a good bump on
- 30:10their knee early in the game, they're going to be a little
- 30:12less likely or a little more reluctant to crash the glass to,
- 30:16to try to go over your back. But it's something that, that,
- 30:21that that's not going away the rest of the year.
- 30:23And you saw against Wisconsin, I, I was at, at the Purdue game,
- 30:28they, they just got bigger players.
- 30:30And I don't care how athletic you are.
- 30:32Again, like I just said, how much you boxed out if you're
- 30:35611, no, a winner being guarded by Isaiah Howard at 65, that's,
- 30:41that's a tough assignment to keep that guy off the board.
- 30:44Yeah, no, no doubt about it. Wade looking Bill joins us here.
- 30:48Well, Wade, when you brought up Bennett Sturtz, obviously he's
- 30:51all everything for for the Hawkeyes this year.
- 30:54Who does he remind you of now that you've seen him?
- 30:56I mean, I know you saw him play with Drake, but that you've seen
- 30:58them as much as you have. Do you have a comparison when it
- 31:01comes to certs? You know, it's, it's funny
- 31:05because you try to compare guys that look like that, you know,
- 31:09guys. But I keep coming back and this
- 31:11is an old one. I keep coming back to to to Jeff
- 31:13Hornacek a little bit way back when from Iowa State had a great
- 31:18NBA career with with the Jazz especially.
- 31:21You know, Jeff was kind of that 64 combo guard.
- 31:24You know, he was more of a point, but could really shoot it
- 31:27when needed to. And I think it was the guy from
- 31:31Southeast play Northwestern. Sean Morris.
- 31:36Sean Morris. Sean Morris made a really good
- 31:38point. I think it was Sean Morris
- 31:40talking about, No, he was anyway, Bennett's so good off
- 31:45the dribble, you know, getting to that 3 point line.
- 31:49A lot of guys like say Peyton Stanford's more of a catch and
- 31:52shoot guy or you know, those spot up shooters.
- 31:56But Bennett is so good off the dribble, not necessarily getting
- 31:59to the basket, but that step back clearance space.
- 32:02So he gets more of an open 3. But I think, like Jeff Ornis
- 32:06said, who was an unbelievable NBA player, great career.
- 32:09Good one and could handle it, of course.
- 32:11And the shooting that went along with it.
- 32:13Like the cop there way looking Bill joins us what other guy
- 32:16want to get your thoughts on a guy that the inconsistency
- 32:19certainly is there Elville or for Garris now we see fool
- 32:22Garris the last time out he actually scores in double
- 32:24figures but they lose for the first time all season long.
- 32:28He's another guy and maybe it goes hand in hand.
- 32:31He's Spanish, he's from across the pond.
- 32:32We we hear about that a lot in the NBA and maybe it takes a
- 32:35while to acclimate while he's going from playing at Robert
- 32:38Morris and jumping up the level here, we know he's a talented
- 32:41guy. How difficult is it and what do
- 32:43you talk in basketball circles and those guys that are coming
- 32:46over here to America and playing the game and now for him,
- 32:48playing the Big 10 for the first time and getting them acclimated
- 32:51to this level of basketball. Yeah, and real quick, it was, it
- 32:54was Don McClain, Don McClain, UCLA Brew.
- 32:57And I was talking about being able to dolphin dribble, you
- 33:00know, I, I just think with Fulgaris, I just think on, on,
- 33:04on the defensive end, they just don't have a place where he
- 33:07fits, you know, can't guard the fours.
- 33:11Probably not, you know, quick enough to guard the threes at
- 33:15six, 9 1/2. He's a really good player.
- 33:17He's going to have a huge year. Last year we talked about it
- 33:20earlier. He he got the campus late.
- 33:23So he's kind of been playing catch up, which, you know,
- 33:25shouldn't, shouldn't be an issue now and into March basically.
- 33:29But I just think on the defensive end, he just doesn't
- 33:32have a fit and he can't guard the bigs, can't really guard the
- 33:37the threes. Now they can't guard him on the
- 33:39other end. But on that defensive end, I
- 33:42think it just they put so much stress and emphasis on the
- 33:45defensive end. Iowa does with coach McCollum
- 33:48that he's just not. He just can't figure it out
- 33:50quite yet, or hasn't quite figured it out.
- 33:52Speaking to Figure it Out quite yet, as I go back to last year
- 33:55and even the year before and you were on Price Stanford's
- 33:57bandwagon. Trent and I weren't really sure
- 33:59what what I had here. We're pretty sure what Nebraska
- 34:03has here. You were proven right Price
- 34:05Sanford obviously having a hell of a year for the Huskers.
- 34:08I believe he's still leading them in scoring.
- 34:10Did you think that that he would have this type of year?
- 34:13I know you like you said, do you you you appreciated his game and
- 34:17thought that the light bulb would come on at this at some
- 34:20point. Well, it's shining brightly over
- 34:22in Lincoln. Wade looking Bill.
- 34:23Yeah, I think it's a couple things.
- 34:25I I think, you know, it's just, it's such a good system for
- 34:28Price, you know, just that that flow and the way Fred knows how
- 34:32to mix sets. I mean, Fred's such a good
- 34:35coach. I think that helps him.
- 34:37And just, he needed a fresh start.
- 34:39You know, he was playing kind of with his brother, not, not in
- 34:43the shadow of his brother. But what I've said, and you guys
- 34:46have asked me about it. How is Price different than
- 34:48Payton? I think Price is a better score.
- 34:50I think Price can score more, more ways than than Peyton can
- 34:56now. Pain, I think is probably a
- 34:57better shooter. But but Price had 3333 the other
- 35:00night. We were at the Nebraska game,
- 35:02also in Iowa City. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 35:03We, we, we, we weren't there to watch.
- 35:05But you know, it was just a tough environment for him.
- 35:07But I think it's a great system. He's got a fresh start.
- 35:11And don't underestimate Sam Hoiberg and what he does.
- 35:14He's unbelievable. Get guys shots and guard and
- 35:17steal the ball. And I mean, but they, they, they
- 35:20got a good system and Rink Mast is a really talented dude.
- 35:25On the weekend, Iowa goes to State College.
- 35:27Now, you played in the old rec hall.
- 35:29You didn't get to play in this new building.
- 35:31This new building is nicer, newer, and nobody goes empty.
- 35:35Yes, and there's going to be dozens.
- 35:37Of people there. Oh my God.
- 35:38What do you have to do when you walk into environment?
- 35:41Like what do you guys probably went to Welsh Ryan, you knew
- 35:43there were going to be Hawkeye fans there, so a little bit
- 35:45different, but what do you go into, Let's be honest, a crappy
- 35:48environment. What do you have to do as a
- 35:50team? You know, again, that that's a
- 35:54tough trip, too. It's so in 1993, that was the
- 35:57first year of Penn State was was in the Big 10.
- 36:00And then again, not kids are more used to it now, but that
- 36:03was a long flight from Cedar Rapids into State College.
- 36:07It's just it, it was really a strange experience.
- 36:11Penn States were real. And, you know, they're, they're
- 36:13they're struggling. I think to answer your question,
- 36:16they just got to find a way to get a win.
- 36:18They got to, you know, let's, let's worry about tonight.
- 36:21But then we're going to fly halfway across the country to to
- 36:25play a team that's they're a wounded animal.
- 36:27You know, those guys can't wait for the season to be over.
- 36:29I guarantee they're planning their spring break trip.
- 36:32But but they want to beat Iowa. They they want to get another
- 36:36win. I think you just got to almost
- 36:39treat it like a high school game and just say, Hey, we're we're
- 36:42not going to be that many people here.
- 36:45Just go out and take care of business.
- 36:46Last thing for you, and I wanted to bring it up because David
- 36:50Kaplan, who joined us prior to you coming on, we were talking
- 36:53about you, You know, we're going over the our second hour of the
- 36:56show. We got Wade looking, Bill coming
- 36:57up at the bottom of the hour and Cappy brought up that he
- 37:00actually scouted you when he was a scout with the Pacers, when
- 37:03you were back in your time at at Iowa when he was scouting the
- 37:07Pacers. Wade, Cappy.
- 37:08Cappy remembered you, Wade. I heard, I heard his comment.
- 37:12That was really cool. What David said he was a coach
- 37:15at. Was it Northern?
- 37:16Northern Illinois and the. Scouts and then I knew him more
- 37:20from his TV work. So that's kind of why I heard
- 37:22first heard his name and obviously a bit bit on with you
- 37:24guys. But he is so entertaining by the
- 37:27way, he is just honest and just well, you, you you never know
- 37:32what his opinion. He will tell you what it is.
- 37:37I think maybe he's getting a little older in age.
- 37:39I don't think he was there to scout me.
- 37:41I think maybe from my teammates. But yeah, that was really cool
- 37:45of him to say that. And, and, and and that guy is,
- 37:48you know, wonderful to listen to.
- 37:49But yeah, he's been an institution and you know,
- 37:52especially in the Midwest, Illinois, Southern Illinois
- 37:55basketball, he's been around forever.
- 37:57Indeed, he has I. Got one final thing.
- 37:59So we are removed from 1993 year, senior year.
- 38:04And I just saw, I think it was 2 weeks ago, it was the
- 38:07anniversary of Andy Kaufman hitting that desperation 3.
- 38:12Now I was a kid, you know, I'm, I'm in middle school.
- 38:14At the time, I thought every player on an opposing team was a
- 38:16jerk. Was Andy Kaufman a jerk on the
- 38:18floor too? Because it seemed like it.
- 38:19And then when he hit that buzzer beater on top of it to knock you
- 38:21guys off, I hated him even more. Any coffins from Jacksonville IL
- 38:27and that that dude was a freight train coming down the lane.
- 38:31You know what he he was not? He was not a jerk at all.
- 38:34Barely said 2 words the whole game.
- 38:36He would just come down. I like playing against Andy
- 38:39because he was going to score and he he tried to play no
- 38:44defense, none at all. He didn't even, I just wanted to
- 38:47get down, shoot the basketball, score again.
- 38:49He had 30 plus that night. But yeah, that was a tough one
- 38:52because that Illinois Iowa rivalry was so strong back then,
- 38:55you know, with Coach Pearl and Dion Thomas and just kind of
- 38:58exacerbated everything. But Andy Kaufman could score the
- 39:02basketball. Great stuff, Wade, Thanks for
- 39:05doing this. We'll run you down next week if
- 39:07your schedule allows. Thanks, Wade.

- 39:29But sports fans, right when you were kids, you just hate the
- 39:31best. He hit that buzzer beater.
- 39:33It just it was so devastating. And I think it was their first
- 39:36loss after the back-to-back wins against Michigan State.
- 39:39Oh yeah. And they had the line.
- 39:40I in champagne beat Andy. Such a good rivalry.
