• 0:34
Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
• 0:36
Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
• 0:38
Speaker 1: This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk, and we have
• 0:40
Speaker 1: in the building my co host Hollis Lewis, Hello, and uh,
• 0:46
Speaker 1: the other big other go host Lisa Odi, and we
• 0:53
Speaker 1: had today, ladies and gentlemen. For anybody who plays golf,
• 0:58
Speaker 1: this is gonna probably be a good show where you
• 1:00
Speaker 1: kind of listen to and enjoy. Lisa's got our guest
• 1:03
Speaker 1: and she's going to introduce her.
• 1:05
Speaker 4: Yes, I'm very proud to introduce this guest tonight. He's
• 1:08
Speaker 4: fresh off the courses at the Valero Texas Open this
• 1:13
Speaker 4: past last weekend in the days before, and also from Augusta, Georgia,
• 1:18
Speaker 4: so he's had a busy few days. But let me
• 1:20
Speaker 4: just give some bio before I introduce him. He's a
• 1:23
Speaker 4: native of Charleston, West Virginia. He graduated from Capitol High
• 1:26
Speaker 4: School and initially played golf at Concord College for two
• 1:30
Speaker 4: years before transferring to the University of North Florida, where
• 1:34
Speaker 4: he earned a degree in jazz studies. Please keep that
• 1:36
Speaker 4: in mind because this is going to be important later
• 1:38
Speaker 4: in this podcast. He's spent eleven years with the West
• 1:41
Speaker 4: Virginia Golf Association from two thousand and three to twenty fourteen,
• 1:46
Speaker 4: and he eventually rose to the position of executive director.
• 1:49
Speaker 4: He managed the Monday qualifiers for the Greenberg Classic, which
• 1:53
Speaker 4: helped bridge his transition to the PGA Tour, and so
• 1:57
Speaker 4: he is now a chief referee for the PGA Tour.
• 2:02
Speaker 4: He's a rules official. And we're proud and very honored
• 2:08
Speaker 4: to have Ken Tacket on the show tonight. Welcome to
• 2:10
  Speaker 4: the podcast, Ken.
• 2:12
Speaker 5: Thanks Lisa, Hollis, carl It's it's a pleasure to join
• 2:16
Speaker 5: you guys this evening.
• 2:17
Speaker 2: Well, we appreciate having you. Okay, so I got a
• 2:20
Speaker 2: quick question right out of the shoot. Okay, I am I.
• 2:23
Speaker 1: Am a horrible golfer who who who unfortunately loves golf,
• 2:30
Speaker 1: you know, but it just doesn't love me.
• 2:32
Speaker 2: Back in the opening, Lisa was talking.
• 2:38
Speaker 1: About like rules and regulations, and and I think there's
• 2:42
Speaker 1: a there's probably like most of the people who play
• 2:47
Speaker 1: golf just randomly, I don't know if they go by
• 2:51
  Speaker 1: those rules.
• 2:52
Speaker 2: But what are some of the more critical rules.
• 2:56
Speaker 1: That professional golf has, because I really don't, I truly
• 3:00
Speaker 1: don't know if I have an understanding of exactly what
• 3:03
Speaker 1: those rules are. Could you kind of give us an
• 3:05
Speaker 1: idea of what some of those rules are and or
• 3:09
Speaker 1: maybe the reasoning behind them.
• 3:13
Speaker 5: Well, yeah, sure, it's the rules are based off of
• 3:16
Speaker 5: two basic principles. Is you play the golf course as
• 3:20
Speaker 5: you find it, and you play the golf ball as
• 3:22
Speaker 5: it lies. So when you tee off the first hole,
• 3:26
Speaker 5: you got what you got. And so if your golf
• 3:28
Speaker 5: ball's sitting down in a in a bad lie in
• 3:32
Speaker 5: the fair way, then you have to deal with that.
• 3:36
Speaker 5: And all the rules are crafted around that. And if
• 3:39
Speaker 5: you remember that when you play the game, that's really
• 3:43
Speaker 5: you know. From there, then it gets the complexity starts
• 3:46
Speaker 5: taking off. And you know, for the casual player, I
• 3:50
Speaker 5: mean that's really that's really it. You play the balls
• 3:53
Speaker 5: you find until it's hold, and then you go to
• 3:54
Speaker 5: the next hole, and then in between here and there,
• 3:57
Speaker 5: you've got bunkers, and you have penalty areas, and you
• 4:02
Speaker 5: have right out of bounds, and you have yeah yeah,
• 4:05
Speaker 5: web of situations, and then you have equipment standards. So
• 4:08
Speaker 5: all the complexity comes after that. But is it is
• 4:12
Speaker 5: basic when you get back to the original two principles
• 4:16
Speaker 5: of the game of golf and.
• 4:17
Speaker 1: The reality though the funny thing about the one rule
• 4:22
Speaker 1: everybody tries to fluff their ball. Though every amateur is
• 4:28
Speaker 1: always fluffing the ball. We do not hit it where
• 4:31
Speaker 1: it lies, that's for sure. Well, I feel like we're
• 4:35
Speaker 1: bearing the lead a little bit. Man, you work, you
• 4:38
Speaker 1: were actually a part of the Masters this weekend, because
• 4:41
Speaker 1: you tell us about that experience, and is this your
• 4:43
Speaker 1: first time being official at it, and just tell us
• 4:46
Speaker 1: your history with the Masters.
• 4:48
Speaker 5: Yeah. Sure, I've been with the PJ Tour now for
• 4:50
Speaker 5: thirteen years and this is my ninth Master's tournament. The
• 4:54
Speaker 5: first one I worked Patrick Reid one in twenty eighteen.
• 4:58
Speaker 5: I was privileged work in twenty nineteen when Tiger Woods won,
• 5:02
Speaker 5: which was unreal. And then this past you know, this
• 5:09
Speaker 5: past week of you know, the Masters tournament. It's the
• 5:15
Speaker 5: greatest greatest golf golf tournament in the world. Uh it's
• 5:19
Speaker 5: it's magical. Everything you see on TV is that plus
• 5:24
Speaker 5: ten ten X and uh our team from the PGA Tour,
• 5:29
Speaker 5: you know, kind of relished the moment to support Augusta
• 5:33
Speaker 5: National and uh staging what what we think is one
• 5:36
Speaker 5: of the greatest sporting events every year and it's just
• 5:41
Speaker 5: fun and and just.
• 5:42
Speaker 2: For for the audience.
• 5:43
Speaker 1: What is your like official title and what do you
• 5:46
Speaker 1: officially task to do at the Masters.
• 5:50
Speaker 5: Well, we're part of the rules committee and and you know,
• 5:54
Speaker 5: like in other sports, like in football, you have it,
• 5:56
Speaker 5: you know, you have a crew and and depending on
• 5:59
Speaker 5: the side of the scope of that, like at the
• 6:02
Speaker 5: Super Bowl, they actually have a secondary crew ready to
• 6:05
Speaker 5: go and you know, ready to to step in at
• 6:08
Speaker 5: the biggest at the biggest stage. So this is similar.
• 6:11
Speaker 5: There's thirty five officials on the on the rules committee
• 6:14
Speaker 5: at the Masters, which is which is big, but you
• 6:18
Speaker 5: know some are some are bigger because of the ceremonial,
• 6:21
Speaker 5: Like you know, you want to make sure you include
• 6:23
Speaker 5: everybody from all over, but the Masters actually, you know,
• 6:26
Speaker 5: they go and want the best of the best, and
• 6:28
Speaker 5: uh so there's twelve of us from the PGA tour
• 6:32
Speaker 5: that kind of lead the way and we support again,
• 6:34
Speaker 5: we're supporting them, but we do everything for rules of
• 6:38
Speaker 5: golf all the way to enforcing pace of play, to
• 6:41
Speaker 5: make sure that you know, what people don't realize is
• 6:43
Speaker 5: that we wanted like at the Masters last week, they
• 6:46
Speaker 5: wanted to be wrapped up about ten tier so that
• 6:48
Speaker 5: if we have a playoff, they were able to they
• 6:50
Speaker 5: could do the green coat ceremony and everything, and so
• 6:54
Speaker 5: we kind of help monitor that and manage that for
• 6:56
Speaker 5: them because, as you guys know, playing the game, you
• 7:00
Speaker 5: run into things when you play and it slows it down.
• 7:02
Speaker 5: And as you saw, Rory McElroy had a couple of
• 7:06
Speaker 5: arrant shots coming down the stretch and things got a
• 7:08
Speaker 5: little slow, but we finished right on time. And that's
• 7:12
Speaker 5: kind of the things that we do. Hey, Carl, I
• 7:14
Speaker 5: think an interesting little side note one of my one
• 7:18
Speaker 5: of my colleagues and co workers is Mark Duce Bobbik
• 7:21
Speaker 5: to play football with you, and he gave me a
• 7:24
Speaker 5: couple of great questions to ask you.
• 7:25
Speaker 2: I love it all right, I'm ready to go turn.
• 7:33
Speaker 5: All right, and he said you'll he said, you'll understand this.
• 7:37
Speaker 5: He said do you think Richard Solomon is the greatest
• 7:42
Speaker 5: defensive coordinator of all time?
• 7:45
Speaker 1: So I'm I'm gonna preface it by saying I have
• 7:50
Speaker 1: mentioned his name here in the studio many times before.
• 7:57
Speaker 1: If there, if there has ever been a co that
• 8:01
Speaker 1: that I felt that was not evil to coach, is
• 8:09
  Speaker 1: Richard Solomon.
• 8:12
Speaker 4: And he and he's not listening.
• 8:15
Speaker 1: It makes no difference. We don't have a we have
• 8:17
Speaker 1: zero relationship. He won't even tune in. He's not even
• 8:25
Speaker 1: because he's not even tuning in. He was oh my gosh,
• 8:29
Speaker 1: you know, and and I've talked about him on on
• 8:32
  Speaker 1: the show.
• 8:32
Speaker 2: You know he came in.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: And Denny Green put him as a as as a
• 8:41
Speaker 1: dB coach. My it was like my last year, I
• 8:44
Speaker 1: think there, oh my gosh, and he just he was
• 8:48
Speaker 1: he was horror bold.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: So so that that's how we can answer that one.
• 8:56
  Speaker 2: That whatever that.
• 9:00
Speaker 5: Deuce Bob says to me, he goes say Pete Carroll
• 9:05
Speaker 5: or Richard Solomon, you had to go the other way. Anyways,
• 9:15
Speaker 5: this is obviously he's one of he does a lot
• 9:18
Speaker 5: of our TV rules analysts. So what he uh, he's
• 9:23
Speaker 5: he's amazing at what he does. And he spends time
• 9:26
Speaker 5: on CBS and NBC. So when we're in a situation
• 9:29
Speaker 5: with rules of golf and and everybody and their brothers
• 9:33
Speaker 5: confused about what's going on, Deuce will kind of explain
• 9:36
Speaker 5: it to the to the world. And uh so again
• 9:39
Speaker 5: he's He's like, oh, you're going to be on sea
• 9:41
Speaker 5: leaves all kinds of stories that we can talk about.
• 9:46
Speaker 2: Later for sure, and please let him know. I said, hello,
• 9:50
Speaker 2: all right, so I have a question for you.
• 9:53
Speaker 4: We're going to take this train back to the station,
• 9:56
Speaker 4: start over on call.
• 9:57
  Speaker 6: No.
• 9:58
Speaker 4: This that was great, It was actually great. So so
• 10:00
Speaker 4: so Kim, before the tour, you spent eleven years with
• 10:04
Speaker 4: the West Virginia Golf Association. So so, what is the
• 10:08
Speaker 4: biggest difference you've found between officiating at like a regional
• 10:12
  Speaker 4: level with the w v g A and then the
• 10:15
Speaker 4: international stage of the PGA Tour.
• 10:18
  Speaker 5: That's a great question. I mean, I think I think
• 10:20
Speaker 5: the again, the basic it's the game, you know, so like, uh,
• 10:24
Speaker 5: it's the game of golf. You you you run into
• 10:27
Speaker 5: similar rule situations at all else, whether you're a junior golfer,
• 10:33
Speaker 5: women senior, all the way up to the Masters tournament.
• 10:37
Speaker 5: The difference is the players in the magnitude of what's
• 10:43
Speaker 5: going on is really really what is different is you
• 10:47
Speaker 5: walk into a ruling and you've got two cameras, six microphones,
• 10:54
Speaker 5: and the players obviously not in a good spot if
• 10:57
Speaker 5: they're calling for an official to assistant, and so you
• 11:01
Speaker 5: kind of have that scrutiny and the immediate kind of,
• 11:04
Speaker 5: you know, a real life test on national television. So
• 11:12
Speaker 5: which is fine. I always just try to slow things
• 11:14
Speaker 5: down the stuff that I learned here at the WVGA,
• 11:17
Speaker 5: which you know, you really get into some crazy stuff
• 11:20
Speaker 5: with twelve and under all they hit it everywhere and
• 11:22
Speaker 5: they've got all kinds of stuff always heeded, and they
• 11:25
Speaker 5: think that their kids in that tiger would So you
• 11:28
Speaker 5: learn how to manage those things. Women senior to me
• 11:32
Speaker 5: was always a fun thing because they were so inquisitive
• 11:36
Speaker 5: and they they they were so curious about what and
• 11:40
Speaker 5: why the rules are the way they are, and so
• 11:42
Speaker 5: it made you really have to explain, you know, and
• 11:46
Speaker 5: you couldn't you couldn't fudge them. They would know that
• 11:48
Speaker 5: you you weren't confident, So you had to know how
• 11:50
Speaker 5: to work your way around the book and to reference
• 11:53
Speaker 5: the rules, and so it really prepared me so that
• 11:57
Speaker 5: when now you know, the players on the PGA Tour
• 11:59
Speaker 5: and you know, at the major championships, they have a
• 12:02
Speaker 5: lot of respect for you know, for me and our team,
• 12:06
Speaker 5: so that they feel confident that the answer they're getting
• 12:09
Speaker 5: is accurate and it's typically well explained and you know,
• 12:14
Speaker 5: taking emotion out of it. That's the That's the good
• 12:16
Speaker 5: thing about a referee in professional golf is while it
• 12:19
Speaker 5: is intense and there is emotion, it's not bang bang
• 12:22
Speaker 5: like you know, taking the charge in basketball or you
• 12:26
Speaker 5: know the collisions that you see in football. It's nothing
• 12:29
  Speaker 5: like that. It's it's more, it's more cerebral, and it's
• 12:32
Speaker 5: a typically some complexity to it, I guess again if
• 12:35
Speaker 5: you're involved. And so we try to lean in using technology,
• 12:38
Speaker 5: using Marcus Public and his team from our video review center,
• 12:42
Speaker 5: to make sure that we're one hundred percent accurate and
• 12:44
Speaker 5: knowing what we're the decision we're making.
• 12:47
Speaker 1: And that was my question because I know we've seen
• 12:50
Speaker 1: sort of the periferation of technology, particularly in baseball. We're
• 12:54
Speaker 1: seeing a lot this year with the challenge in the
• 12:55
Speaker 1: calls within the strike zone and obviously what we've seen
• 12:58
Speaker 1: in football, what if from your beginning stages of doing
• 13:03
Speaker 1: this to now, what are the technology advances that you've
• 13:06
Speaker 1: seen that actually, you know, help the game and help
• 13:09
Speaker 1: you do your job more efficiently.
• 13:12
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a great question, Hallis. I think that what
• 13:17
Speaker 5: we try to do is to constantly look around the
• 13:20
Speaker 5: corner and so that we're on the cutting edge of
• 13:23
Speaker 5: technology as much as we can be. Also, you know,
• 13:26
Speaker 5: in basketball, it's a ninety four foot court, so they're
• 13:29
Speaker 5: able to have six cameras that can really cover a lot. Well,
• 13:33
Speaker 5: we have two hundred and ten acres on a golf
• 13:36
Speaker 5: course with you know, eighteen basically eighteen different arenas, and
• 13:40
Speaker 5: you know you've trees and wildlife and all the things
• 13:43
Speaker 5: that go on along with it that make it just
• 13:45
Speaker 5: a little more a little different armies of folks with cameras,
• 13:53
Speaker 5: and that's what we rely on, is that video. We
• 13:55
Speaker 5: have one hundred and fifty stationary cameras around the golf
• 13:58
Speaker 5: course and we use it shot link technology to score
• 14:01
Speaker 5: our tournaments and then we're able to tap into that
• 14:04
Speaker 5: system that you know four K. It's unbelievable. And you know,
• 14:11
Speaker 5: big brothers always watch and I always remind the players
• 14:13
Speaker 5: that when they get mad or they throw something or
• 14:16
Speaker 5: you know whatever, you just say, hey, just remember we
• 14:20
Speaker 5: have cameras, so let's make sure we have everything right.
• 14:23
Speaker 5: I don't really want to get into that. You know,
• 14:25
Speaker 5: the game of golf is all about integrity, so you
• 14:27
Speaker 5: you they typically are spot on it. We don't have
• 14:31
Speaker 5: very We have very few the situations where we're dealing
• 14:34
Speaker 5: with having to go to cameras to maybe disprove someone's
• 14:40
Speaker 5: someone's recollection of the facts. So to your point, we
• 14:47
Speaker 5: constantly are using technology. It has made it made our
• 14:49
Speaker 5: job way more efficient. So for example, I'm setting out
• 14:54
Speaker 5: and I'm on the golf course kind of waiting. There's
• 14:58
Speaker 5: typically eight to ten of us on the golf of course,
• 15:00
Speaker 5: and we have someone with each group that is a
• 15:03
Speaker 5: volunteer that kind of helps scoring. The player will say, hey,
• 15:06
Speaker 5: can you call for an official, and then it'll come
• 15:09
Speaker 5: over the radio, Hey we have a ruling at four green,
• 15:11
Speaker 5: for example, Well at that point, do Spobik and his
• 15:15
Speaker 5: team go to the cameras And then as you're driving
• 15:18
Speaker 5: to that fourth green, hey, can it looks like it's
• 15:21
Speaker 5: going to be interference from a sprinkler head or whatever
• 15:25
Speaker 5: it is. So as you're going into the ruling. You're
• 15:28
Speaker 5: already armed with what you're running into, so it just
• 15:30
Speaker 5: makes so much quicker. You're not having to ask question
• 15:32
Speaker 5: what happened? Who saw this? Hey, missus Johnson over in
• 15:35
Speaker 5: the corner, what did what did you see? And you know,
• 15:38
Speaker 5: one thing that we've learned is the volunteers and the
• 15:42
Speaker 5: spectators they don't they're not they're not the best witness
• 15:48
Speaker 5: their lion I sometimes to prevent them from telling us
• 15:52
  Speaker 5: what happened.
• 15:53
Speaker 1: But I okay, So I'm trying to I'm trying to
• 15:55
Speaker 1: figure out like, okay, like how do you do like
• 15:59
Speaker 1: every read every shot like like because you're you know,
• 16:03
Speaker 1: everybody's moving to the next hole. How do you how
• 16:07
Speaker 1: do you manage to get each each each shot that
• 16:12
  Speaker 1: each golfer is.
• 16:16
Speaker 2: It's it's hitting. How do you how do you how
• 16:18
Speaker 2: do you manage that?
• 16:20
Speaker 5: Well, we have a camera at every tee, we have
• 16:22
Speaker 5: two cameras in the fairway, and we have three cameras
• 16:25
Speaker 5: at every green, and then and then plus supplemental and
• 16:28
Speaker 5: then at any moment on the golf course, there's between
• 16:31
Speaker 5: nine and eleven golf balls in the air at once,
• 16:34
Speaker 5: So someone's playing from one someone's playing from seven, someone's
• 16:37
Speaker 5: playing from six. You know, at some point there's there's
• 16:40
Speaker 5: nine to eleven golf balls in motion. So these these
• 16:43
Speaker 5: camera systems, it's a lot of the technology from the
• 16:46
Speaker 5: Department of Defense that that would that would track like
• 16:49
Speaker 5: the missiles, like the missile systems of Patriot missiles that
• 16:52
Speaker 5: follow the baff the golf ball. So there as soon
• 16:55
Speaker 5: as the golf ball goes, we know the spin rate,
• 16:57
Speaker 5: we know the trajectory, we know the probability to go.
• 17:01
Speaker 5: I mean, it's unbelievable. If you have, Carl, if you
• 17:02
Speaker 5: had it, you would probably shave fifteen strokes off your
• 17:05
  Speaker 5: score because.
• 17:05
Speaker 2: You would never have to.
• 17:09
  Speaker 1: I mean, I don't I don't know if like, I
• 17:12
Speaker 1: don't know, if you're not on and and and telling
• 17:15
Speaker 1: us this, I don't know how anybody could have assumed
• 17:19
Speaker 1: that that's the type of structure that is following the technology,
• 17:24
Speaker 1: the technology that's following golf. I mean, it has to
• 17:28
Speaker 1: be probably the best of anything of any other sport.
• 17:36
Speaker 5: It is a baseball actually, they they be the only
• 17:39
Speaker 5: other challenge. Yeah, well they use the same Uh, they
• 17:42
Speaker 5: use the same type of technology. If if you watch
• 17:45
Speaker 5: their their like when like when someone hits it. Uh
• 17:48
Speaker 5: uh hits it hits it from the bat like whether
• 17:50
Speaker 5: it's where it's drawling or cutting or you know, they
• 17:53
Speaker 5: can they can track the same type of spin rate
• 17:55
Speaker 5: and it's the same technology we use. But the difference
• 17:57
Speaker 5: is it's one field, one ball that they have to
• 18:01
Speaker 5: worry about, where like you said, I mean, you got
• 18:04
Speaker 5: seventy some guys playing at one time and you're trying
• 18:07
Speaker 5: to that that's the complexity that we deal with is
• 18:11
Speaker 5: two hundred and some acres and seventy some golfers playing
• 18:14
Speaker 5: nine to eleven golf balls in the air at once
• 18:17
Speaker 5: compared to you know, the other sports where it's one
• 18:19
Speaker 5: one ball. And and that's why, like you said, the
• 18:24
  Speaker 5: technology is just it's just outrageous and it's it's it's
• 18:27
Speaker 5: so fun to be a part of because it's constantly changing,
• 18:30
Speaker 5: its constantly getting better. We have a we have a
• 18:33
Speaker 5: drone that our broadcast team was recognized for for that
• 18:40
Speaker 5: technology and in interaction or innovation with the sports where
• 18:44
Speaker 5: the drone is hovering and it captures the golf ball
• 18:48
Speaker 5: flight from origination to until to the end endpoint and
• 18:53
Speaker 5: it's an amazing it's amazing. I mean, you can watch
• 18:56
  Speaker 5: it happen.
• 18:57
Speaker 2: Drones have become a major part of sports all around.
• 19:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, and almost literally everything, Like you've got to have
• 19:06
Speaker 1: that if as coverage of the sport.
• 19:11
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, absolutely, and last week was no difference. And
• 19:16
Speaker 5: you know, the NBC they deploys six i think six
• 19:20
Speaker 5: drones in San Antonio when we were there for the
• 19:22
Speaker 5: Texas Open. And they have the high velocity kind of
• 19:29
Speaker 5: uh you know, speed drones that that they can get
• 19:32
Speaker 5: the really quick shots and go around the golf course
• 19:34
Speaker 5: and kind of give you that amazing perspective. And then
• 19:37
Speaker 5: they have the high flying drones that capture these beautiful
• 19:40
Speaker 5: aerials that you know, back in the day it would
• 19:42
Speaker 5: be the Good Year of blimp would be flying over
• 19:44
Speaker 5: or the stationary you know in a plane or something well,
• 19:48
Speaker 5: I mean other than Goodyear occasionally just because of that,
• 19:51
Speaker 5: it's such a good sponsorship. Those drones are just capturing
• 19:54
Speaker 5: magical shots. They're able to go down to the tree
• 19:56
Speaker 5: line and go above and show show people views that
• 20:00
Speaker 5: they've never seen before. Last week of the Masters, there
• 20:03
Speaker 5: was a couple the drone shots that I saw. It
• 20:05
Speaker 5: just yeah, it's just beautiful.
• 20:07
Speaker 4: Yeah, So I'm gonna I'm going to start the trivia
• 20:10
Speaker 4: game with with Ken Tackett here, and we're gonna We're
• 20:13
Speaker 4: gonna somebody might be asked this question that's listening to
• 20:15
Speaker 4: the podcast. So we're going to go back to your
• 20:17
Speaker 4: bio Ken, that you know we talked about or I
• 20:21
Speaker 4: talked about you transferring to the University of North Florida
• 20:24
Speaker 4: where you earned a degree in jazz studies. And so
• 20:28
Speaker 4: I'm not sure how many people out there in in
• 20:31
Speaker 4: our world knows that knows this, at least people listen
• 20:33
Speaker 4: to the podcast that you were actually a professional jazz
• 20:37
Speaker 4: drummer at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. That's at one
• 20:40
Speaker 4: point before entering the golf world. Your your band also
• 20:45
Speaker 4: appeared in some films, The Legend of Bagger Vance and
• 20:49
Speaker 4: Ocean's Eleven Right. So, so how do people and the
• 20:53
Speaker 4: players that you work with react when they find out
• 20:56
Speaker 4: that you know their referee has this background and in
• 20:58
Speaker 4: film and professional music.
• 21:02
Speaker 5: Well, I'm only outdone by Mark News Bobbin, who played
• 21:04
Speaker 5: in the NFL. When people ask hey, how do you
• 21:10
Speaker 5: get this job, I'm like, well, either play in the
• 21:12
Speaker 5: NFL or play drums. Oh, it's it's great. I mean
• 21:18
Speaker 5: one thing you said, I I did not play golf
• 21:20
Speaker 5: at Concord for two years. I went to for two years.
• 21:25
Speaker 5: My roommate and principal at Capitol High School, John Anderson,
• 21:28
Speaker 5: was on the golf team. So we played. We played
• 21:32
Speaker 5: high school together, and uh, but I left and went
• 21:35
  Speaker 5: and got it.
• 21:36
  Speaker 2: I was.
• 21:37
Speaker 5: I was a good golfer and a great drummer. So
• 21:40
Speaker 5: I followed and and played professionally playing drums and and
• 21:45
  Speaker 5: and we did.
• 21:46
  Speaker 4: Uh we we.
• 21:48
Speaker 5: I still played all the way up through COVID. I was,
• 21:53
Speaker 5: you know, trying to kind of balance to still stay
• 21:56
Speaker 5: keep you know, keep my foot in the game of
• 21:58
Speaker 5: playing music. Obviously, Bob Thompson is one of my Yeah,
• 22:06
Speaker 5: I just saw him my last one was in town,
• 22:09
Speaker 5: and uh, he's just you know, he's been in my life,
• 22:12
Speaker 5: my whole life playing music, and he's been you know,
• 22:14
Speaker 5: it's like an idol. So I was able his drummer,
• 22:18
Speaker 5: Timmy Courts, would play. Yeah, absolutely, so he Timmy had
• 22:23
Speaker 5: some stuff going on, and so I was able to
• 22:25
Speaker 5: fill in for Timmy for three or four months and
• 22:28
Speaker 5: spend time playing with Bob, and you know, to do
• 22:29
Speaker 5: that from time to time, which is cool because you
• 22:32
Speaker 5: know it's I was able to enjoy that moment and
• 22:36
Speaker 5: then Landau Murphy when he won the America has Got Talent.
• 22:41
Speaker 5: I was able to play with him for almost eleven
• 22:44
Speaker 5: years doing doing things all around.
• 22:46
  Speaker 2: Wow.
• 22:47
Speaker 5: And so you know, just really really fortunate to have
• 22:52
Speaker 5: that part of my life. And you know, I you know,
• 22:55
Speaker 5: being involved in in a I think one of the
• 22:58
Speaker 5: greatest games with the GLF often to play music, especially
• 23:02
Speaker 5: jazz and R and B, which is what you know,
• 23:04
Speaker 5: the type of music that I love. And uh, very fortunate.
• 23:08
Speaker 1: So so let me ask you, just on the trivia train,
• 23:10
Speaker 1: what is the greatest shot that you've ever seen?
• 23:14
  Speaker 2: Personal?
• 23:15
Speaker 1: So all your years working, whether it was at the
• 23:18
Speaker 1: the amateurs on the pg A, what is the greatest
• 23:21
  Speaker 1: shot you've ever.
• 23:27
Speaker 5: Great question is a great question, by the way, I
• 23:30
Speaker 5: love it. You guys are like all everybody rally Gate
• 23:34
Speaker 5: was what's the best rule.
• 23:37
Speaker 4: We'll keep you on your taste, that's for sure.
• 23:41
Speaker 5: I would say, I bet I'm gonna give you two.
• 23:45
Speaker 1: If that's okay, you can give me like you're just
• 23:47
Speaker 1: your greatest and you can kind of give me maybe
• 23:49
Speaker 1: your most dramatic that the one that had the most impact,
• 23:52
Speaker 1: like on that particular, whether it's like for the win
• 23:54
  Speaker 1: or whatever.
• 23:57
Speaker 5: The man I've seen, I've been so fortunate to see
• 24:01
Speaker 5: some crazy stuff locally. We were at the West Virginia
• 24:07
Speaker 5: Open at Edgewood. Pat Carter. Pat Carter from Huntington hits
• 24:14
Speaker 5: this kind of low, slicy shot at number ten, boom
• 24:19
Speaker 5: hole in one, right, you know, right in competition, which
• 24:23
Speaker 5: was again nothing you know, not on television, not in
• 24:27
Speaker 5: front of a bunch of people, but it was just
• 24:29
Speaker 5: the way that it went in. It was just it
• 24:31
Speaker 5: just to be there and to the impact and everything
• 24:33
Speaker 5: that was going on that the competition was was awesome.
• 24:35
Speaker 5: And Pat is, you know, great great golfer from West Virginia,
• 24:44
Speaker 5: but in the professional realm, so I'm one of my
• 24:50
Speaker 5: roles is I'm chief referee at the Phoenix Open, the
• 24:52
Speaker 5: Waste Management Phoenix Open, which is the biggest, most crazy
• 24:57
Speaker 5: golf tournament in the world. I mean, it's two hundred
• 24:59
Speaker 5: thousand people. It's just awesome. And I typically sat at
• 25:04
Speaker 5: sixteen Green where all of the shenanigans go on and
• 25:08
Speaker 5: just kind of be there.
• 25:09
  Speaker 4: Yes they do.
• 25:10
Speaker 5: And we had a whole one day before and the
• 25:14
Speaker 5: place went crazy, and so I wanted to be there
• 25:17
Speaker 5: and just to kind of see what's going on. And
• 25:18
Speaker 5: the second day, Carlos Ortiz hits makes a hole one,
• 25:24
Speaker 5: and I mean the place just goes bonkers. I mean,
• 25:28
Speaker 5: beer flying everywhere. That was that was pretty amazing. And
• 25:33
Speaker 5: it's the same I was watching Tiger Woods finish at
• 25:36
Speaker 5: the Masters in nineteen hitting that approach hot. Well, it
• 25:40
Speaker 5: wasn't anything you know of a whole one or whole out.
• 25:45
Speaker 5: It was just it was just magical.
• 25:48
  Speaker 2: Man.
• 25:48
Speaker 5: I mean, to have the return of you know, arguably
• 25:52
Speaker 5: the greatest golfer of all time from from all all
• 25:55
Speaker 5: of his injuries and everything going on to win the
• 25:57
Speaker 5: Masters in nineteen and before COVID, you know, and I
• 26:03
Speaker 5: mean it was just I mean people just screaming. I
• 26:05
Speaker 5: mean in that place, it's like typically the decorma is
• 26:08
Speaker 5: just not and it was just chanting Tiger.
• 26:14
Speaker 2: And you know what's funny about all that too.
• 26:16
Speaker 1: Typically, you know, if I'm out on the course, like
• 26:20
Speaker 1: we're all talking about, you got to be quiet, you know,
• 26:22
Speaker 1: you got to be quiet.
• 26:23
Speaker 2: But it really isn't always that way now.
• 26:26
Speaker 1: According I'm sure when they get ready to take a
• 26:29
Speaker 1: swing and all that kind of stuff, but to hear
• 26:31
Speaker 1: you talk about like the celebration of it, Like that's
• 26:34
Speaker 1: not really even something that I think I would I've
• 26:37
Speaker 1: ever even really seen.
• 26:39
Speaker 5: Oh man, y'all gotta come out to Phoenix if you
• 26:42
Speaker 5: want to see. I mean, it is. It's crazy. It's
• 26:45
Speaker 5: so much fun. And they do they the fans like
• 26:48
Speaker 5: last week. So Augusta doesn't allow cell phones or into
• 26:52
Speaker 5: the to the tournament, so everyone's engaged. You see people
• 26:55
Speaker 5: having conversation and you hear applause, you know, which you
• 26:59
Speaker 5: don't you don't think about that. But people get their hands,
• 27:02
Speaker 5: you know, they got the cameras. Everyone's wanting to video everything. Yeah,
• 27:04
Speaker 5: and there it's just your presence and you're clapping and
• 27:08
Speaker 5: you're acknowledging you know, not only you know, not only
• 27:12
Speaker 5: the great shots, but you know, the good shots. The
• 27:14
Speaker 5: respect for the number one player walking to the tee,
• 27:18
Speaker 5: that they acknowledge that Rory micro Roy winning the Glans
• 27:21
Speaker 5: Brand Slam last year. I mean, it's just I don't know.
• 27:25
Speaker 5: I try to take all of it in and not
• 27:27
Speaker 5: take stuff for granted and to kind of just just
• 27:30
Speaker 5: see the different things going on.
• 27:31
Speaker 1: Yeah, and with the no cell phones, I went to
• 27:33
Speaker 1: a Dave Chappelle concert a couple of years ago, and
• 27:36
Speaker 1: you know, you had to lock your cell phone up,
• 27:38
Speaker 1: and it really is. I think that you really, if
• 27:42
Speaker 1: you don't have your cell phone with you and they're
• 27:44
Speaker 1: actually at an event, whether it's a sporting an event
• 27:46
Speaker 1: or a show or whatever, you really it's almost a
• 27:49
Speaker 1: different different experience now because we're so used to just
• 27:53
Speaker 1: mildlestly just kind of looking at our cell phone even
• 27:55
Speaker 1: when we don't have anything to look at.
• 27:57
  Speaker 2: So that's actually I like.
• 28:01
Speaker 5: The mindless scroll. Yeah, Bruno, we saw Bruno Mars in
• 28:05
Speaker 5: Vegas the same way and he actually sang a song
• 28:08
Speaker 5: about you know, I took your cell phone and it
• 28:11
Speaker 5: was it was amazing and it was all about but
• 28:13
Speaker 5: it was all about engagement and just to join the
• 28:15
Speaker 5: moment with the people you're with. And uh and I
• 28:18
Speaker 5: kind of applaud the Augusta for you know, because you know,
• 28:21
Speaker 5: you get pressure from people like well what about this?
• 28:24
Speaker 5: And so they have payphones that are you know, free
• 28:26
Speaker 5: pay like quote unquote paphons, but free phones all over
• 28:29
Speaker 5: the golf course that you can stop and check in
• 28:31
Speaker 5: with people, and it's it's it is. I think it's cool.
• 28:35
Speaker 5: I applaud the like like Chappelle people.
• 28:38
Speaker 2: Like that to do that.
• 28:40
Speaker 4: So I'm going to get a little a little serious
• 28:43
Speaker 4: now and and and kind of go back to to
• 28:45
Speaker 4: to your your position with the PGA. And I read
• 28:48
Speaker 4: somewhere and please correct me if I'm wrong, but it
• 28:50
Speaker 4: said that you know, you're on the road roughly like
• 28:52
Speaker 4: two hundred nights a year, and obviously if you're doing both,
• 28:56
Speaker 4: you know, Augusta and the Texas open in one weekend,
• 28:59
Speaker 4: that that's probably pretty close to the correct numbers. So
• 29:03
Speaker 4: so how do you and your family can how do
• 29:06
Speaker 4: you manage to balance your you know, your personal and
• 29:10
Speaker 4: your work life with this type of type of schedule.
• 29:14
  Speaker 5: Well, I mean that's a great question. I think that
• 29:18
Speaker 5: you involve your family in what you do, you don't
• 29:23
Speaker 5: And it also doesn't define me like I mean, it's
• 29:25
Speaker 5: I love, I'm fortunately I've got one of the greatest
• 29:28
Speaker 5: jobs in the world. But it's it's you know, it's
• 29:31
  Speaker 5: it's what I do. It's not who I am. And
• 29:33
Speaker 5: so I try to remember that. I mean, sometimes it's hard,
• 29:36
Speaker 5: you know, because you want to be invested and you
• 29:38
Speaker 5: love what you do and you want to be the
• 29:39
Speaker 5: best you can be. We always take a trip to
• 29:42
Speaker 5: the US Open. It's always Fatursday Sunday, and so the
• 29:46
Speaker 5: week after the US Open we typically do something as
• 29:48
Speaker 5: a family. I've always you know, you know, my wife
• 29:52
Speaker 5: was able to go with me down last week to Augusta.
• 29:55
Speaker 5: So to be able to experience it and to share
• 29:58
Speaker 5: that experience I think some important. And then she is, uh,
• 30:03
Speaker 5: my wife's you know, I'm so lucky. She's very supportive,
• 30:09
Speaker 5: and she has a lot of stuff that she does
• 30:11
Speaker 5: here in Charleston. She's active in the community and she
• 30:14
Speaker 5: does things. She has a friend group, and so when
• 30:17
Speaker 5: we're together, we enjoy the time and and it's uh,
• 30:21
Speaker 5: it's just something you have to you both have to
• 30:23
Speaker 5: be all in on because it is difficult. But it's
• 30:27
Speaker 5: always been that way kind of with us, like in
• 30:28
Speaker 5: the music world as well, and even with the West
• 30:30
Speaker 5: Virginia Officer station. You know, while I might have been
• 30:33
Speaker 5: in Morgantown, I still went home, you know, So it's
• 30:36
Speaker 5: it might be two and a half hours or twelve
• 30:38
Speaker 5: and a half hours, you're still not home. And so
• 30:40
Speaker 5: knowing how to be prepared for those those long time,
• 30:43
Speaker 5: those long trips is uh, you know, it's good it's good.
• 30:46
Speaker 5: It's a great question, Lisa, you get all the good.
• 30:50
Speaker 1: Just one more, one more question at least for me.
• 30:53
Speaker 1: Like again, I don't know how much you can get
• 30:55
Speaker 1: into this, But so I was watching uh, the you know,
• 30:59
Speaker 1: sort of the pre Master stuff and just you know,
• 31:01
Speaker 1: all the hoop lie around it. They was talking about
• 31:04
Speaker 1: John Daly. Now what I didn't know is that he
• 31:07
Speaker 1: kind of sets up a little booth across the streets
• 31:10
Speaker 1: to sell and all that sort of stuff like that.
• 31:13
Speaker 1: Why And I also didn't know, like not getting it.
• 31:17
Speaker 1: I wasn't for sure like if they said he was
• 31:19
Speaker 1: banned or he just doesn't play in that specific tournament.
• 31:23
Speaker 2: So is that is that true?
• 31:24
  Speaker 5: Am I?
• 31:25
Speaker 2: Am I on the right path there? Or am all? Well?
• 31:28
Speaker 5: No, no, I mean a lot of it's fight some
• 31:30
Speaker 5: of it. So the Master's Tournament is an invitational that
• 31:34
Speaker 5: you you learned to come each year. If you won
• 31:36
Speaker 5: the Masters, then you're typically extended in the invitation, you know,
• 31:41
Speaker 5: every year. So someone like Jose Maria Olivable who won
• 31:45
Speaker 5: you know, a long time ago, and you know the
• 31:50
Speaker 5: Freddie Couples won, Gosh, I don't nineteen ninety ninety one.
• 31:54
Speaker 5: So he still plays. So did you kind of have
• 31:56
Speaker 5: that cool connection to the to the to the senior
• 32:01
Speaker 5: golfers legacy can correct And and so John won the
• 32:08
Speaker 5: British Open Championship and the PJA Championship. He's obviously one
• 32:12
Speaker 5: of the most famous and popular golfers in the game.
• 32:15
Speaker 5: And so therefore he goes to Augusta every year and
• 32:19
Speaker 5: he kind of does a little bit of a road
• 32:21
Speaker 5: show where he sometimes with his friends, he signs autographs,
• 32:25
Speaker 5: he does you know, he does all those things. He
• 32:27
Speaker 5: monetizes his his likeness, but at the same time, he
• 32:31
Speaker 5: celebrates the game that he loves. I mean, you know,
• 32:34
Speaker 5: he's he's obviously a fun party and kind of guy.
• 32:36
  Speaker 2: He's one of.
• 32:38
Speaker 5: One, uh, but he also respects the game and he
• 32:42
Speaker 5: he loves being a part of the kind of the
• 32:44
Speaker 5: the whole world of golf come to Augusta. Oh yeah.
• 32:51
Speaker 5: So and by the way, James Brown is from Augusta.
• 32:53
Speaker 5: So that's I'm like down do all that stuff.
• 32:59
Speaker 4: Oh a goat to We're about to let you go, Cam.
• 33:01
Speaker 4: But I just I just have one one more question
• 33:03
Speaker 4: for you, and that is it's concerning Christmas cards from
• 33:07
Speaker 4: Davis Love the Third. Do you get those every year
• 33:10
Speaker 4: after the Honda Classic.
• 33:16
Speaker 5: You did your homework.
• 33:19
  Speaker 2: A little bits.
• 33:22
Speaker 4: Oh I love this, but please please just just do
• 33:25
Speaker 4: a little condensed like you know, narration of what happened.
• 33:29
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, look, you know when I first started out,
• 33:33
Speaker 5: I had look like in West Virginia, we don't have
• 33:37
Speaker 5: fire ants like they do in the South. And we're
• 33:40
Speaker 5: down there and Davis has a ball that's up against
• 33:45
Speaker 5: tree and his only play is to kind of chip
• 33:47
Speaker 5: out sideways, and he's trying to look at it and
• 33:52
Speaker 5: see what he can do. And he's like, can I
• 33:54
Speaker 5: think I've got fire ants here? And I'm like, well,
• 33:57
  Speaker 5: I don't. I don't. I don't see them. I don't
• 33:59
Speaker 5: see anything. We have these little tricks where we can
• 34:01
Speaker 5: kind of check to see if there's fire ants. You
• 34:02
Speaker 5: drop something beside it and they jump out like they're
• 34:05
Speaker 5: ready to fight, and you kind of know, okay, these
• 34:07
Speaker 5: are fires these are not sleepy and uh And I'm
• 34:11
Speaker 5: like with Davis, you're from Georgia. What do you think
• 34:13
Speaker 5: He says, I think I'll play the ball, And so
• 34:16
Speaker 5: he didn't take the drop, so it was good. Da
• 34:20
Speaker 5: Davis is one of the legends in the game of
• 34:24
Speaker 5: of our game and he's we have a great relationship.
• 34:29
Speaker 5: I've got doctor tell stories and stories and stories. I yeah, yeah,
• 34:35
  Speaker 5: that's good.
• 34:36
Speaker 1: Well, Ken, we appreciate you coming on man, and and

• 35:55
Speaker 2: was great, awesome man.
• 35:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's just great that, like we have somebody
• 35:59
Speaker 1: that's from charge that you know, went professional in sports
• 36:04
Speaker 1: a different way. I think too often we discourage kids. Well,
• 36:07
Speaker 1: you got to have a plan, be da data if
• 36:10
Speaker 1: you are if you like sports, if you love sports,
• 36:13
Speaker 1: and even if you don't have the talent or acumen
• 36:15
Speaker 1: to actually physically make it to play at the next level,
• 36:18
Speaker 1: there's a pathway for you to work at the Yeah,
• 36:21
Speaker 1: there's so much there's so many other options other than
• 36:24
Speaker 1: just playing that I don't know if we communicate that,
• 36:28
Speaker 1: we don't back out to the kids and even the
• 36:31
Speaker 1: young men who are let's say, even in college.
• 36:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, and he's such a multi talented guy. I mean
• 36:37
Speaker 4: you hear about like his degree. I mean he didn't
• 36:39
Speaker 4: even really play college golf, right, I mean, he just
• 36:42
Speaker 4: kind of played jazz that you know, got that degree
• 36:45
Speaker 4: and and just kind of fell into the golf world.
• 36:48
Speaker 4: So it just told I mean, it kind of just
• 36:49
Speaker 4: proves that whatever your dreams are, just follow them and
• 36:52
Speaker 4: you can make them happen it and he.
• 36:54
Speaker 2: Falls into a spot that we don't even think about.
• 36:59
Speaker 1: You know that nobody's even I never even heard of,
• 37:02
Speaker 1: like I guess I should have, but I just never
• 37:04
Speaker 1: heard of like a golf official. Well yeah, like you
• 37:08
Speaker 1: see all these people out there, but you don't really
• 37:10
Speaker 1: know what their title is, and you're not really paying
• 37:12
Speaker 1: any attention. You're just watching the shot and watching somebody
• 37:15
Speaker 1: swing and trying to figure out if you can learn
• 37:17
Speaker 1: to swing like that, and you don't.
• 37:20
Speaker 2: We don't dive into it to see all of the
• 37:23
Speaker 2: roles that are available there. And there's a bunch of roles.
• 37:26
Speaker 2: And I think we have to do a better job
• 37:28
Speaker 2: of communication. I think so too.
• 37:32
Speaker 1: And before we close out, here we go all right, yes, yes,
• 37:36
Speaker 1: here we go? When when when you start? Okay, so
• 37:42
Speaker 1: if you if you're starting to talk about somebody who's
• 37:45
Speaker 1: going to be the goat, right m h. No matter
• 37:49
Speaker 1: what the sport is, there has to be there has
• 37:54
Speaker 1: to be a social aspect of that because you for
• 38:00
Speaker 1: people to even vote you as that person, they may
• 38:04
Speaker 1: see your game, but they may see my game, but
• 38:07
Speaker 1: then they see Hollis's game, and then I'm I'm not
• 38:10
Speaker 1: necessarily I don't know, personable, all these other things that
• 38:14
Speaker 1: I don't do, and they go they lean more.
• 38:17
Speaker 2: To holler like green type of thing.
• 38:19
Speaker 1: Yes, yes, and and I think, I think, I think
• 38:24
Speaker 1: what we have in basketball, I cannot okay, I cannot
• 38:34
Speaker 1: ever give Lebron the goat. Why he's he's just not
• 38:42
Speaker 1: he he Okay, I'm every single.
• 38:46
Speaker 4: Time it's a personal go ahead this week.
• 38:53
Speaker 1: Every time, every time that I see that, every time
• 38:56
Speaker 1: that I see the flops. Now, my my question is
• 39:00
Speaker 1: you watched him flop and you don't see anybody hit him.
• 39:04
Speaker 1: You see him holding his he doesn't know if he
• 39:06
Speaker 1: needs to hold his arm or his shoulder.
• 39:09
Speaker 2: You see those kind of things. Does that look like
• 39:13
  Speaker 2: the goat?
• 39:17
Speaker 4: But his records tell another story, you can. I mean,
• 39:22
Speaker 4: I know he's been in the game a long time,
• 39:24
  Speaker 4: but and he.
• 39:25
Speaker 1: And he is by he is by far one of
• 39:28
Speaker 1: the greatest players ever to play the game. But when
• 39:32
Speaker 1: you what you do is you he's messing that up
• 39:37
Speaker 1: with those things, Hollis. I think it's like one of
• 39:42
Speaker 1: those things when we when I don't think he again
• 39:47
  Speaker 1: and I and I hear what you're saying, And I
• 39:48
Speaker 1: think there's a lot of things problematic with like Lebron
• 39:52
Speaker 1: as far as his maybe style of play, the comments
• 39:56
Speaker 1: he said about men fits and Milwaukee recently, that's those
• 39:59
Speaker 1: and that that's you know, that ain't a good look.
• 40:01
Speaker 1: But I think when you talk about a guy like
• 40:04
Speaker 1: Kareem or when you talk about a guy like Jordan,
• 40:06
  Speaker 1: there's a mystique around them, right, there's a mistique that
• 40:10
Speaker 1: exists that not that they were perfect or they played
• 40:14
Speaker 1: the game perfect, but they played in an era and
• 40:18
Speaker 1: they played in a style of game in which you
• 40:22
Speaker 1: had to be rough and tumbled like Lebron. Excuse me,
• 40:24
Speaker 1: Jordan had to go lift weights to play against those
• 40:26
  Speaker 1: Pistons teams.
• 40:28
Speaker 2: Right, But at the same time, the.
• 40:29
Speaker 1: NBA changed the rules a little bit for Jordan to
• 40:32
Speaker 1: make it a little bit more finess, so it wasn't
• 40:35
Speaker 1: just as rugged as it was once was. And I
• 40:37
Speaker 1: think with Lebron, there is just an air of like,
• 40:41
Speaker 1: come on, guy, like you don't have to do this,
• 40:45
Speaker 1: Like you're right, you're six eight six', nine your two
• 40:49
Speaker 1: plus you look like a tight, End like you don't
• 40:52
Speaker 1: have to play that, way you know WHAT i?
• 40:54
Speaker 2: Mean, yes and that is exactly.
• 40:57
Speaker 1: Okay you are you are sitting in the in the
• 41:01
Speaker 1: seat of A hall Of, fame one of the greatest players,
• 41:05
Speaker 1: ever and you have these, silly stupid things that you're.
• 41:09
Speaker 2: Doing that is just like.
• 41:12
Speaker 4: Ruining can we bring up his stats In, april just In?
• 41:15
Speaker 4: APRIL i look that, up.
• 41:17
Speaker 2: So and you cant got. Me it's not gonna save.
• 41:19
Speaker 2: Him but but let's talk.
• 41:21
Speaker 4: About, Okay so he's forty one years, old AM i? Right,
• 41:24
Speaker 4: yes it's forty one years old in a in a
• 41:27
Speaker 4: game that really consists.
• 41:28
Speaker 2: Of thirty which he should, Be, yes he should.
• 41:32
Speaker 4: Be really thirties most, people, right or most most. Players,
• 41:35
Speaker 4: Okay so his stats For april this year points per,
• 41:38
Speaker 4: game he's got twenty he's averaging twenty point. Nine, okay
• 41:42
Speaker 4: he's forty. One his assists are seven point two per,
• 41:45
Speaker 4: game his rebounds are six point. One his field goal
• 41:49
Speaker 4: percentage right now is fifty one point five, percent and
• 41:52
Speaker 4: he's played sixty. Games that's not horrible for a forty
• 41:55
  Speaker 4: year old.
• 41:56
Speaker 1: Man that's BUT i think that that goes to the, argument,
• 41:59
Speaker 1: right that's part of the argy because you can't argue, Numbers,
• 42:03
Speaker 1: no you have A i, mean we can argue. Titles
• 42:06
Speaker 1: but to, ME i don't care if the title that
• 42:09
Speaker 1: he won with The Cleveland Cava Year cavaliers when he
• 42:11
Speaker 1: was just playing with a bunch of dudes out, there
• 42:14
Speaker 1: THAT i mean that that was but but but it's
• 42:19
Speaker 1: just he doesn't have the same, aura, right he doesn't
• 42:22
Speaker 1: have the same mistique as A. Jordan and, again those
• 42:25
Speaker 1: are different. Eras we got social media now where we
• 42:28
Speaker 1: know everything about, everybody AND i think that everybody's gonna
• 42:32
Speaker 1: hold The Miami heat thing against.
• 42:34
  Speaker 3: Him.
• 42:34
Speaker 1: Everybody everybody's gonna say that he was the start of
• 42:39
Speaker 1: the super team Where god's just clicking, up just trying
• 42:41
Speaker 1: to play together win. Chips so he's gonna always have
• 42:45
Speaker 1: a couple things over his head that are gonna make,
• 42:48
Speaker 1: people particularly like of our generation and, older.
• 42:50
Speaker 2: To be, like, yeah HE i but he ain't him
• 42:54
Speaker 2: AND i and and and and let's just be.
• 42:56
Speaker 1: Honest those those are those are legitimate things that you
• 43:01
Speaker 1: can have a problem.
• 43:02
Speaker 2: WITH i think we're nitpicking a little, bit you know.
• 43:08
Speaker 4: WHAT i think he likes what you're. Saying pretty. Much
• 43:11
Speaker 4: the issue comparing him With Michael jordan and these other
• 43:14
  Speaker 4: players is. CHARISMA i, MEAN i THINK i think he's
• 43:17
Speaker 4: a solid. PLAYER i think he gets out there and
• 43:19
Speaker 4: he and he and he plays great, games but there's
• 43:21
Speaker 4: something he just doesn't.
• 43:22
  Speaker 1: Have the.
• 43:22
Speaker 4: Finesse the way that he plays the game is is
• 43:26
Speaker 4: kind of. Vanilla is that is that a way TO
• 43:29
  Speaker 4: i don't.
• 43:29
Speaker 2: Even want to give. IT i, SEE i hear what you're.
• 43:32
Speaker 1: Saying BUT i think he does have like he he
• 43:35
Speaker 1: has for sure the skill set and all of those
• 43:38
Speaker 1: kinds of, things but his extreme to get a, foul
• 43:44
Speaker 1: his extreme to be, injured his extreme to be all
• 43:49
Speaker 1: those THINGS i would go, TO i would go to other.
• 43:51
Speaker 1: Way SO i would say That Michael jordan And kobe
• 43:55
Speaker 1: and EVEN i would put Like Alan iverson and maybe
• 43:58
Speaker 1: you can even Put Steph curry in this.
• 44:00
Speaker 2: Category they play, poetry, emotions it.
• 44:03
Speaker 1: Is it was beautiful to Watch Michael jordan Play cream
• 44:07
Speaker 1: the same, Way, magic the same, Way bird the same.
• 44:10
Speaker 1: Way lebron has more of a direct type of game
• 44:13
Speaker 1: where he can kind of he can bully, ball he
• 44:15
Speaker 1: can kind of just do what he, wants so it's
• 44:17
Speaker 1: not it's not. Picturesque AND i also think that those
• 44:21
Speaker 1: guys THAT i just, NAMED i, mean, hell how, much
• 44:24
Speaker 1: particularly when they were playing how much do we know About?
• 44:27
Speaker 1: Bird how much did we really know About. Jordan we
• 44:29
Speaker 1: didn't really know the personal lives and their views on.
• 44:33
Speaker 1: Everything so they had a mystique in an oar around
• 44:36
Speaker 1: him of like mystery where we know just everything about
• 44:39
Speaker 1: lebro and to your, point we just we know kind
• 44:42
Speaker 1: of the we're almost kind of inside his, head if
• 44:44
Speaker 1: you will a little. Bit, okay and and and all
• 44:47
Speaker 1: of that's, Valid lisa's. Valid i'm gonna still say that
• 44:53
Speaker 1: you don't like it THAT i THINK i just, okay
• 44:59
Speaker 1: so you take let's say you Take Michael jordan's. Stats,
• 45:03
Speaker 1: Okay theron's stats can be right there above. Him they are,
• 45:10
Speaker 1: okay other than, championship, okay but when you watch them,
• 45:15
Speaker 1: play it's just no. COMPARISONS i mean, effort And i'm
• 45:21
Speaker 1: not even talking about huge stuff and all that kind of.
• 45:24
Speaker 1: Stuff i'm just talking about the. Effort he's not, gonna
• 45:27
Speaker 1: he's not. Gonna he's not gonna fall, down and, SOMEBODY i.
• 45:32
  Speaker 2: Don't THINK i would Say i'm. Saying i'm saying as
• 45:39
Speaker 2: a athlete looking at, HIM i don't think he needs
• 45:44
  Speaker 2: to fake.
• 45:46
Speaker 1: And fall down and hold his, arm hold his, shoulder
• 45:50
Speaker 1: hold his knee like it's, dead like they're gonna have
• 45:53
Speaker 1: to come and cut it, off you, Know And.
• 45:55
Speaker 4: I'm gonna when The lakers change channels for you and to.
• 46:00
Speaker 1: Seconds, later he's he's running, again or he's shooting, again
• 46:03
  Speaker 1: he's rebounding.
• 46:04
  Speaker 2: Again.
• 46:05
Speaker 4: Dude part of the, game, now isn't.
• 46:07
Speaker 2: It it's not if you're not if it is for.
• 46:10
Speaker 1: Him see my problem with that, Is, okay to your, Point,
• 46:15
Speaker 1: lisa it is for, him and he's, there and he's
• 46:18
Speaker 1: supposed to be the greatest player in the.
• 46:20
Speaker 2: League how do you set that.
• 46:22
Speaker 6: Example that's the example that you're, showing and AND i
• 46:25
Speaker 6: can MAKE i, COULD i can be one hundred percent
• 46:27
Speaker 6: sure and not. Know but there are players in the
• 46:31
Speaker 6: locker room talking about all of that stuff that he's.
• 46:35
Speaker 4: Doing i'll Be devil's advocate. Here so he would stop
• 46:38
Speaker 4: the flopping that you speak of if you.
• 46:40
Speaker 2: Had, start if he had to. Stop, okay, okay let's.
• 46:43
  Speaker 2: Stop let's say.
• 46:44
Speaker 4: If he doesn't do it at, all and then all these.
• 46:47
Speaker 2: You've never, done say he's never done.
• 46:49
Speaker 4: It let's just say. That let's say he's never. Done
• 46:51
Speaker 4: how would you feel about his play minus the?
• 46:54
Speaker 1: FLOPPING i would say that he's a great, player and
• 46:57
Speaker 1: the same AS i would, say, now he's a great,
• 46:59
Speaker 1: player but he's still. Not he doesn't because even beyond
• 47:04
  Speaker 1: the injuries and that he's, FAKING i don't. KNOW i
• 47:09
Speaker 1: don't know if he can Be Michael. JORDAN i don't
• 47:13
Speaker 1: know if he can Be Kobe. BRYANT i don't know
• 47:16
Speaker 1: if he can Be Magic johnson BECAUSE i just don't
• 47:18
Speaker 1: see the work ethic on the. Floor, Now i'm gonna
• 47:21
Speaker 1: make the case he's a work ethic kind of. Guy
• 47:23
Speaker 1: he can't get. That he can't be, that but you
• 47:26
Speaker 1: got but you've got to show that in the. Game
• 47:30
Speaker 1: but and he just doesn't look that.
• 47:32
  Speaker 2: Way, yeah that.
• 47:33
Speaker 1: WAY i just think it's a, stylistically it's just not your.
• 47:37
Speaker 1: TASTE i would say.
• 47:38
  Speaker 2: THAT i.
• 47:39
Speaker 1: WOULD i would, say like stylistically, Correct, stylistically the way
• 47:43
Speaker 1: he plays is just not.
• 47:46
  Speaker 2: To watch.
• 47:46
Speaker 4: BALL i, mean isn't it true historically like in the,
• 47:49
Speaker 4: past like in some of the conference series that he's
• 47:53
Speaker 4: kind of been criticized for kind of like giving up
• 47:57
Speaker 4: when their team is like taking the last.
• 48:00
Speaker 1: Shot, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah but but but he's got
• 48:03
Speaker 1: a lot of those kind of things he. Does But
• 48:05
Speaker 1: i'll say He lebron makes the right play all the,
• 48:09
Speaker 1: Time so he'll, like if the balls in, hand he's
• 48:13
Speaker 1: he's he's very HIGH iq basketball, Player so if the
• 48:16
Speaker 1: balls in, hand he's gonna make the right correct. Pass
• 48:20
Speaker 1: Where Michael jordan And Kobe, bryant at, times they would
• 48:24
Speaker 1: force the, issue so they're gonna, like, man, LOOK i
• 48:27
Speaker 1: mean we've seen a time they're gonna take. It they
• 48:30
