- 1:11Speaker 2: in addition to.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Some good clips you can see of our show. Guys.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Very simple topic to get into here, didn't even feel
- 1:22Speaker 2: the need to introduce what we were going to discuss
- 1:25Speaker 2: on the show before I introduced you guys, because this is,
- 1:29Speaker 2: i would say, probably the biggest story in sports right now,
- 1:32Speaker 2: definitely the biggest story in the world of baseball.
- 1:37Speaker 1: This weekend, it was announced that.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Two Major League baseball players, Emmanuel class A Classe and
- 1:46Speaker 2: Louis Ortiz, were indicted on charges for allegedly being linked
- 1:54Speaker 2: to illegally betting on games that they were participants and
- 1:59Speaker 2: they're There are a lot of really good, extensive reports
- 2:04Speaker 2: on this situation. ESPN's been all over it, the Athletics
- 2:07Speaker 2: went all over it. I recommend anyone who's interested in
- 2:11Speaker 2: baseball giving a read to the reporting from the likes
- 2:15Speaker 2: of Zach My Soul, Jeff Passon, and others as well.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal, I believe has contributed to some reporting here,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and I apologize to the others who who also contributed,
- 2:26Speaker 2: because there's a lot of really good information on this
- 2:29Speaker 2: some great journalism. It's it's quite kind of cool from
- 2:32Speaker 2: my end to see that US baseball writers were not
- 2:35Speaker 2: just writing about games. That we're capable of doing some
- 2:39Speaker 2: good journalism these days, and I want to talk about
- 2:41Speaker 2: this journalism and just this overall situation gambling in baseball.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It's gone back for over one hundred years. Obviously, the
- 2:53Speaker 2: infamous Chicago Black Sox fixed a World Series eight men out.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They made a movie about it. Those guys banned from baseball.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Pete Rose, it's the reason he's.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Not in the Hall of Fame.
- 3:06Speaker 2: To Kapeto Marcano, former pirate, was banned from baseball just
- 3:09Speaker 2: last year.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And now we have this.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And this was an interesting scenario because in all other instances,
- 3:16Speaker 2: it feels like those things happened and were discovered after
- 3:21Speaker 2: they were happening, right, this incident was discovered in the
- 3:26Speaker 2: midst of the season in which it was taking place,
- 3:30Speaker 2: and these guys were put on paid leave mid season
- 3:35Speaker 2: as their team was competing to win a pennant and
- 3:39Speaker 2: ultimately did they found a way to win the division
- 3:43Speaker 2: without them, and then the season ends less than a
- 3:47Speaker 2: couple weeks after the World Series is played, we get
- 3:51Speaker 2: this bombshell report where they're not just facing discipline from
- 3:54Speaker 2: Major League Baseball, these guys could be potentially doing decades
- 4:00Speaker 2: of time in prison. So I obviously a lot of
- 4:06Speaker 2: people have strong opinions on this, but we have access
- 4:09Speaker 2: to a major league baseball player who I'm sure, Josh.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We hear all the time.
- 4:16Speaker 2: First day of spring training, they ask you, they read
- 4:20Speaker 2: you Rule twenty one, They tell you about that rule,
- 4:22Speaker 2: do not.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Bet on baseball.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I've got a couple questions about this story for you,
- 4:27Speaker 2: but my first one is just what was your reaction
- 4:29Speaker 2: to this news.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Definitely shocking, you know, definitely not anything you want to
- 4:36Speaker 4: be in the news for, especially for any sport. You know,
- 4:40Speaker 4: we've done a lot over the years to try to
- 4:42Speaker 4: clean up our game and you know, not have any
- 4:44Speaker 4: of these outside factors, even with the you know whole
- 4:48Speaker 4: steroid error and all that. You know, it's why we
- 4:50Speaker 4: got testing and you know a lot of these in
- 4:53Speaker 4: there are still people that are you know, testing positive
- 4:55Speaker 4: for steroids when we get the same you know spill
- 4:59Speaker 4: every spring or whatever about you know, taking supplements given
- 5:02Speaker 4: by the team, and you know Rule twenty one, as
- 5:04Speaker 4: you said, is something that has gone over every spring.
- 5:08Speaker 4: You know, they even put out you know, like a
- 5:10Speaker 4: little video that we watch, you know, just to make
- 5:12Speaker 4: it interactive or you know, just to make sure something
- 5:14Speaker 4: that will grab your attention because you know, even for
- 5:17Speaker 4: you know, ninety nine percent of the guy sitting in
- 5:20Speaker 4: that locker room went watching it.
- 5:22Speaker 3: You know, aren't going to do it.
- 5:23Speaker 4: But I mean, this case right here shows that there
- 5:25Speaker 4: are still people out there that could potentially be putting
- 5:28Speaker 4: themselves in a situation that otherwise, you know, they shouldn't.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's it's mind blowing to me that this
- 5:39Speaker 2: is still happening, right, And it also makes me wonder
- 5:43Speaker 2: how often this happened before sports betting was legalized, right, Like,
- 5:48Speaker 2: how many how many players got away with this before
- 5:51Speaker 2: we had the technology to track these certain things. But
- 5:56Speaker 2: then on the flip side, gambling is impossible to avoid now, Josh.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Even back when you were playing, which wasn't long ago,
- 6:05Speaker 2: it was still kind of taboo, right.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I mean, it wasn't federally legalized.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Or it's still not federally legalized, but it wasn't legalized
- 6:13Speaker 2: anywhere really except for like Vegas and Atlantic City for
- 6:17Speaker 2: the bulk of your career. And I'm sure you know
- 6:20Speaker 2: people still bet on sports a ton back then. Not
- 6:23Speaker 2: saying like active players, but you know, people had bookies,
- 6:27Speaker 2: people would go to race tracks, people would go to Vegas.
- 6:31Speaker 2: But now it's it's even in that Athletic article. If
- 6:35Speaker 2: you read to the very bottom of that very extensive,
- 6:38Speaker 2: detailed report, the Athletic had to give full disclosure they
- 6:43Speaker 2: have a partnership with that MGM. I am a part
- 6:46Speaker 2: of other shows that have partnerships with other sports books.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I'm sure foul Territory even has partnerships with sports books,
- 6:55Speaker 2: and so everyone is involved with this. Now League Baseball,
- 7:00Speaker 2: every stadium you go to there is a sports book
- 7:07Speaker 2: add on the outfield wall, or some of them even
- 7:10Speaker 2: have sports books attached to their stadium.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You can place a bet before heading into the game.
- 7:16Speaker 2: You can bet on the game as you watch from home,
- 7:19Speaker 2: in the middle of the game, and that's how this
- 7:21Speaker 2: came to be. In nineteen seventy you couldn't bet on
- 7:27Speaker 2: every pitch. You couldn't bet on if it would be
- 7:30Speaker 2: a striker ball. You couldn't bet on the velocity of it.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Right now you can, we can catch it, right, we
- 7:38Speaker 2: have the technology to see. Okay, eleven thousand dollars, we're
- 7:42Speaker 2: just bet on the first pitch of a fourth inning offering.
- 7:47Speaker 1: But you can bet on that stuff.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Not as much money anymore, right, yeah, yeah, But Josh,
- 7:55Speaker 2: I want to ask you about that is is this
- 7:59Speaker 2: have we gone to? Has was this inevitable when you
- 8:02Speaker 2: get in bed with sports gambling because it's such a
- 8:05Speaker 2: prominent part of our sports society.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Now, was this bound to happen? Oh?
- 8:11Speaker 3: For sure.
- 8:13Speaker 4: I mean I can't say at the forefront it's anything
- 8:16Speaker 4: that anybody was specifically detailed like this, but looking at it,
- 8:20Speaker 4: for sure you can bet on every pitch. It's a
- 8:23Speaker 4: game that has a lot of human error. So I
- 8:26Speaker 4: mean it's a game where people try to do something,
- 8:29Speaker 4: you know, throw a ball a specific spot and go
- 8:31Speaker 4: somewhere different.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So in retrospect.
- 8:36Speaker 4: To be able to kind of disguise it, I guess
- 8:38Speaker 4: you could, because there's so much human error in this
- 8:42Speaker 4: game that is like, oh man, he threw a pitch
- 8:44Speaker 4: to the backstop, and trust me, sometimes.
- 8:46Speaker 3: That happens, like you know what I mean.
- 8:48Speaker 4: So it's not far fetched to think, oh, yeah, I'm
- 8:51Speaker 4: gonna gamble pitch by pitch.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Oh I bet he does throw a first pitch ball.
- 8:54Speaker 3: It might be you know, in retrospect.
- 8:56Speaker 4: You might be thinking, oh, yeah, the guy that's leading
- 8:59Speaker 4: off the end is a first pitch swinger, so yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 4: this pitcher probably you know, those are things that people
- 9:04Speaker 4: will probably look into because everything now has data, has analytics,
- 9:09Speaker 4: So even people that are gambling and betting, I'm sure
- 9:11Speaker 4: are looking at the percentages that are being.
- 9:14Speaker 3: You know, put out there.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I don't know, I'm just speaking off of if it's
- 9:17Speaker 4: on ESPN and you can watch or you know, say
- 9:20Speaker 4: you're watching the broadcast of a game and they're putting
- 9:22Speaker 4: up probability of you know, base hit with a one
- 9:25Speaker 4: two count and showing these things, I'm sure people are
- 9:27Speaker 4: betting on these things. So, as I said, for it
- 9:31Speaker 4: to happen, I don't think it should be anything that
- 9:35Speaker 4: is surprising now looking at it, because as you said,
- 9:39Speaker 4: even before then, people were you know, maybe you know,
- 9:41Speaker 4: connected to a bookie or somebody gambled. So I don't
- 9:44Speaker 4: think it's anything that just like I said, steroids, we've
- 9:47Speaker 4: cracked down on that, but there are still gonna be
- 9:49Speaker 4: people that do steroids.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Unfortunately, and this is another case of just like.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Gambling, you know, we go over rule twenty one, but
- 9:55Speaker 4: unfortunately there's still some people out that are out there
- 9:59Speaker 4: that might be considering doing you know, something that would
- 10:02Speaker 4: you know otherwise told not to.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Mark, I want to pick your brain on some things
- 10:07Speaker 2: now people know Mark because he runs a good Twitter account,
- 10:11Speaker 2: but a lot of people don't know Mark is a lawyer.
- 10:14Speaker 1: He has a law degree.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So I want to dive into the conversation you and
- 10:19Speaker 2: I were having before we went on there the sloppiness
- 10:25Speaker 2: the paper trail here, as someone.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Who's been a part of reviewing.
- 10:30Speaker 2: These things, you know you're you're an expert in essentially
- 10:35Speaker 2: finding paper trails, knowing the documents, and being able to
- 10:39Speaker 2: connect the dots on things. It's rather jarring how careless
- 10:47Speaker 2: some of these things allegedly, or the way they went
- 10:50Speaker 2: about these things allegedly, I should.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Say, yeah, just based off the athletics reporting. Again all alleged,
- 10:56Speaker 5: but I mean, you had a manual Class A text
- 11:00Speaker 5: in the bookie who he had basically paid for the
- 11:04Speaker 5: seats for this bookie, and.
- 11:07Speaker 1: So he's singing in that's not the bookie, yeah better.
- 11:10Speaker 5: The better was sitting in Class A seats as Class
- 11:14Speaker 5: A is texting him from the bullpen saying are you ready?
- 11:17Speaker 5: You're ready? And then are you They have a few
- 11:20Speaker 5: minutes of a conversation, and again, all of this is
- 11:24Speaker 5: easily proven by federal investigators. The FBI is gonna have
- 11:27Speaker 5: no issue pulling this up and saying, exhibit A your honor.
- 11:31Speaker 5: So it's perplexing that they did it that blatantly, just
- 11:36Speaker 5: not even in that regard though, but also the way
- 11:40Speaker 5: that the bets were placed, the consistency. This wasn't just
- 11:44Speaker 5: a one or two time thing. This was consistently consistently.
- 11:47Speaker 5: It seems like class may have brought in or teased
- 11:49Speaker 5: it almost up the scale of the operation that was
- 11:53Speaker 5: going on to the point where it's over four hundred
- 11:55Speaker 5: thousand dollars that they won. And the other perplexing aspect
- 12:00Speaker 5: of this is just the kickbacks that they were getting.
- 12:03Speaker 5: It seems like minimal numbers. I saw one payment of
- 12:06Speaker 5: five thousand and one payment of seven thousand dollars. Yeah, yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 5: and so it's just that's sum of money for the
- 12:15Speaker 5: liability that they put themselves in now, let alone professionally,
- 12:19Speaker 5: but legally is just astounding.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I mean, you look at the earning potential athletes have now,
- 12:26Speaker 2: especially with social media and brand deals. You can make
- 12:31Speaker 2: a two thousand dollars side hustle legally, so much easier.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Your agency could set that up for you in a day.
- 12:39Speaker 2: It feels like, Josh, I want to get back to
- 12:42Speaker 2: you on this. Put yourself in the shoes of a
- 12:47Speaker 2: player on the Cleveland Guardians right now. You have been
- 12:53Speaker 2: playing with these guys for I mean, in the case
- 12:57Speaker 2: of Class A, some of the guys in that club
- 13:00Speaker 2: have been playing years of baseball with him. Dave went
- 13:05Speaker 2: to the ALCS with him last year. Some guys played
- 13:10Speaker 2: in All Star Games with him. He was I think,
- 13:13Speaker 2: for my money, the best relief pitcher in Major League
- 13:16Speaker 2: Baseball thirty he was young voting, Yeah, he was third.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And Cy Young voting last year.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And then Luis Ortiz is a guy that they traded
- 13:26Speaker 2: for who had five plus years of club control.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He was going to be the anchor of their rotation
- 13:32Speaker 1: for years down the line.
- 13:34Speaker 2: And we all know how much Cleveland values it's starting pitching.
- 13:39Speaker 1: That's what's been their bread and butter.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And won them a ton of games for the last
- 13:44Speaker 2: however long twenty thirty years. What are you feeling right
- 13:49Speaker 2: now if you're one of the players in the Guardians
- 13:51Speaker 2: organization as you're reading that story.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Definitely caught off guard, because I'm sure this is the
- 13:59Speaker 4: same situation is when you know any type of you know,
- 14:02Speaker 4: suspension or anything happens you know, for the most part,
- 14:06Speaker 4: you're blind sided because it's not anything that you know,
- 14:09Speaker 4: they they released to the team and say hey, in
- 14:11Speaker 4: a couple of days or a couple of weeks, you know,
- 14:13Speaker 4: this report is going to come out for so and
- 14:15Speaker 4: so so as all of us are learning, they are
- 14:19Speaker 4: also finding out at the same time. And I'm sure
- 14:22Speaker 4: there's a lot of you know, questions that you know,
- 14:25Speaker 4: guys have. But at the same time, I know there's
- 14:30Speaker 4: a leader or a couple leaders in the clubhouse that
- 14:32Speaker 4: are going to have to understand today. You know, we still,
- 14:36Speaker 4: you know, as you said, made the playoffs without these guys,
- 14:39Speaker 4: not that these guys when they were here weren't our
- 14:42Speaker 4: you know, teammates and brothers.
- 14:43Speaker 3: But it's just a case off. You never know what.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Somebody's involved in and what they got going on, or
- 14:49Speaker 4: what they could be involved in, and that's just a
- 14:53Speaker 4: thing of where for them, this is an opportunity where
- 14:56Speaker 4: it's going to be next man up, which it was
- 14:57Speaker 4: already proven, next man up, you know, with those guys
- 15:01Speaker 4: having to take a you know, absence of leave.
- 15:02Speaker 3: But I'm sure there's gonna be some some some anger,
- 15:06Speaker 3: some frustration.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I'm sure there's gonna be some people that are hurt,
- 15:11Speaker 4: you know, because because trust factor with some with a
- 15:13Speaker 4: lot of guys are going to be broken, not amongst
- 15:16Speaker 4: the team, but just with those guys. But I'm sure
- 15:19Speaker 4: that clubhouse is also like, you know, those guys have
- 15:22Speaker 4: a little bit or or actually a lot bigger things
- 15:24Speaker 4: to worry about then, you know, just you know, our
- 15:28Speaker 4: clubhouse trusting them because you know what, as you said,
- 15:30Speaker 4: it's not just MLB baseball.
- 15:32Speaker 3: This is, you know, a bigger case than that.
- 15:35Speaker 4: But I know Stephen Vote is a guy that's been
- 15:38Speaker 4: been around the game quite a bit, so I don't
- 15:41Speaker 4: think it's anything that you know, he won't be able
- 15:45Speaker 4: to get to the forefront because, uh, Steven was a
- 15:48Speaker 4: catcher and has jumped right into that job. And I think,
- 15:52Speaker 4: you know, I've done a pretty good job of managing
- 15:54Speaker 4: those things. But uh, this is just one of those
- 15:56Speaker 4: cases where it's some outside noise that they're gonna have
- 15:59Speaker 4: to quiet. But I think this is something that's going
- 16:02Speaker 4: to continue to go because there are gonna be guys
- 16:04Speaker 4: that could potentially be brought in for questioning that probably
- 16:07Speaker 4: don't know a thing.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I want to be clear before I asked this question
- 16:12Speaker 2: that I'm not comparing what I'm about to bring up
- 16:15Speaker 2: to what's currently happening to two players who were part
- 16:18Speaker 2: of the Guardians organization.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But you, Josh, you.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Talked about how there are things that happen involving players
- 16:26Speaker 2: in the same clubhouse and you have no idea, and
- 16:30Speaker 2: that things will get brought up mid season and people
- 16:33Speaker 2: are completely caught off guard. I think an example of that,
- 16:37Speaker 2: and obviously, like I said, on a lesser scale, on
- 16:40Speaker 2: so many different levels, was when Marte got popped for peds.
- 16:46Speaker 2: What would that have been twenty seventeen, twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Seventeen, We never forget we were in Saint Louis. That
- 16:53Speaker 3: was the season that they had moved cutched to.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Right Yes, can you can you tell me about that experience,
- 16:58Speaker 2: because I mean that was, like you said, they moved
- 17:01Speaker 2: the face of the franchise to right field because Starling
- 17:04Speaker 2: Marte was supposedly going to make you guys better in
- 17:06Speaker 2: center field, and he was the star prospect, he was
- 17:10Speaker 2: going to become the next superstar, and you lost your
- 17:14Speaker 2: star player for something that no one really had an
- 17:16Speaker 2: idea that was going on.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Yeah, we were in Saint Louis. I'll never forget. We
- 17:22Speaker 4: get done with the game, and uh, Saint Louis, we
- 17:25Speaker 4: stayed in the hotel that was walking distance, so we
- 17:27Speaker 4: always used to walk back to the hotel. You know,
- 17:29Speaker 4: guys got their you know, postgame routines, and even Saint Louis,
- 17:33Speaker 4: you'll take a more time because it's no bus time.
- 17:36Speaker 3: And I remember me and Kutch walked back.
- 17:38Speaker 4: You know, to the hotel. We kind of take our
- 17:40Speaker 4: time because neither one of our wives are there.
- 17:42Speaker 3: And I remember we.
- 17:43Speaker 4: See Marte as we're walking out and thinking nothing of it.
- 17:45Speaker 4: You know, he's out in the hallway, you know, just
- 17:49Speaker 4: like anybody may have been, you know.
- 17:51Speaker 3: And see you tomorrow, and uh, you know, we know
- 17:53Speaker 3: nothing of it.
- 17:54Speaker 4: And Cutch gets a call that morning, I'm pretty sure
- 17:57Speaker 4: from you know, like Clint, right after it broke. I
- 18:00Speaker 4: think Clint's like, hey, Cutch, we just found out it's
- 18:03Speaker 4: announced you're playing center field. And that's when the team
- 18:07Speaker 4: found out, like when it was announced. But we got
- 18:09Speaker 4: to the field that day, Marte had to address us
- 18:12Speaker 4: and speak to us. But uh, you know a lot
- 18:14Speaker 4: of us, as I said, none of us knew, like
- 18:17Speaker 4: not even an inkling of oh, he's trying to peel it,
- 18:20Speaker 4: or there's a you know, we was just showing up
- 18:23Speaker 4: every day. He's showing up every day playing and then
- 18:26Speaker 4: you know, obviously he knew. But you know some of
- 18:29Speaker 4: those things where you really are a blind side, you're
- 18:31Speaker 4: caught off guard. You got questions, but at the same time,
- 18:34Speaker 4: you know, time doesn't stop. You got other guys in
- 18:37Speaker 4: that clubhouse that y'all. Y'all got to strap it up
- 18:40Speaker 4: and put it together every day.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Yeah, that's yeah.
- 18:45Speaker 2: And again I want to reiterate one more time, not
- 18:48Speaker 2: comparing Starling Marte using PDS to what class A and
- 18:54Speaker 2: Ortiz are alleged to be doing, but just the element
- 18:57Speaker 2: of how that can impact.
- 18:59Speaker 3: The team this season, like just how news is said.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm sure there's probably an element of you
- 19:04Speaker 2: where it's like you probably there's part of you that
- 19:08Speaker 2: moving forward always had some curiosity. It's like I wonder
- 19:12Speaker 2: what's going on that I don't know about.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Or you notice times like dang, you know what I
- 19:17Speaker 4: do remember certain games that he just wouldn't himself or whatever.
- 19:21Speaker 4: It's like, man, maybe it was weighing on him. You know,
- 19:23Speaker 4: there was nobody he could tell. And as I said,
- 19:27Speaker 4: you know, it's always bigger than the game of baseball
- 19:28Speaker 4: because that's somebody's life, you know, right. And you know,
- 19:31Speaker 4: as much as we want to feel or say this,
- 19:33Speaker 4: that person got a whole other thing that we wouldn't
- 19:36Speaker 4: even fathom dealing with that. You know, as I said,
- 19:40Speaker 4: those guys in the locker room are going to have
- 19:42Speaker 4: to band together and keep pushing.
- 19:45Speaker 1: On the note of this being someone's life.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I think we can wrap up this week's show here.
- 19:50Speaker 2: There are other things that we plan on talking about today,
- 19:53Speaker 2: but I feel like this is just a great single
- 19:56Speaker 2: topic episode because it is the single topic in the
- 19:58Speaker 2: baseball world. We could talk about Mitch Keller and some
- 20:02Speaker 2: awards and other things on other episodes.
- 20:04Speaker 1: You've got plenty of them to come.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I want to talk about Louis Ortiz for a moment
- 20:09Speaker 2: because I covered this guy.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I feel like I got to know him a decent amount.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I'm not going to sit here and act like I
- 20:18Speaker 2: had an amazing relationship with him, but Luis Ortiz.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Was.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And Josh can kind of attest to this.
- 20:27Speaker 2: When you're a Latin ballplayer, you don't feel comfortable maybe
- 20:31Speaker 2: speaking English to every media member, because you have to
- 20:35Speaker 2: build a certain level of trust with guys who will
- 20:38Speaker 2: take you out of context or maybe just to won't
- 20:41Speaker 2: give you the benefit of the doubt or allow you
- 20:43Speaker 2: to maybe expand on things and say, are you sure
- 20:46Speaker 2: you got that right there?
- 20:47Speaker 1: And Louise and I like that.
- 20:50Speaker 2: He was probably the first Latin ball player who granted
- 20:54Speaker 2: me that trust and would talk to me in his
- 20:57Speaker 2: second language, and that meant a lot to me. And
- 21:01Speaker 2: he shared some things about his game, just about his
- 21:04Speaker 2: personal life, and I always thought Luis Ortiz was a
- 21:08Speaker 2: really sweet man. He was a kid who had insane talent,
- 21:15Speaker 2: got some humble pie thrown his way. Early in his
- 21:18Speaker 2: big league career, the Pirates moved him to the bullpen
- 21:21Speaker 2: and he embraced that role. He ended up being like
- 21:24Speaker 2: a three and a half win player in twenty twenty
- 21:26Speaker 2: four when they moved him into the rotation. I thought
- 21:29Speaker 2: he was going to end up being a big staple
- 21:32Speaker 2: for the Pirates.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Rotation moving forward.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Kennonley, I was kind of pissed when they traded him
- 21:36Speaker 2: because I thought that I thought that he added a
- 21:39Speaker 2: lot of value here and I thought that he was
- 21:42Speaker 2: one of the guys. I really enjoyed interacting with in
- 21:45Speaker 2: that clubhouse, although there was still a language barrier. I mean,
- 21:49Speaker 2: he told me that Mitch Keller taught him to throw
- 21:52Speaker 2: a new pitch mid season. That was one of my
- 21:54Speaker 2: first exclusive stories I got to report on the beat,
- 21:57Speaker 2: and it was fun doc menning his success because some
- 22:02Speaker 2: people were quick to write him off as a bust,
- 22:05Speaker 2: and he made himself a valuable piece of that twenty
- 22:08Speaker 2: twenty four team, a valuable trade trip that brought in
- 22:11Speaker 2: the Pirates best hitter this past season. And I remember
- 22:15Speaker 2: going on Cleveland area radio stations the day of that
- 22:20Speaker 2: trade from the winter meetings and telling Guardians fans that said,
- 22:23Speaker 2: this is a guy that gonna you're gonna enjoy watching.
- 22:26Speaker 2: He's gonna be someone who's a positive addition to the clubhouse,
- 22:30Speaker 2: someone who will start playoff games for you guys, someone
- 22:34Speaker 2: who has such a high upside. And seeing his name
- 22:37Speaker 2: involved in something like this, it hurts. It hurts to read.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And again I'm not sitting here pretending like I was
- 22:43Speaker 2: best friends with Luis Ortiz, But when you cover major League.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Baseball, Josh, you know it.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I mean, reporters, they see the players more than they
- 22:54Speaker 2: see their families and vice versa.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Like you're You're around each other a lot. You get to.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Build relationships with some of these guys. Some of them
- 23:02Speaker 2: want to start a podcast with you down the road.
- 23:04Speaker 2: It's kind of cool. But on a serious note, though,
- 23:08Speaker 2: with Luis Ortiz, it sucks to see this. If he
- 23:13Speaker 2: was a part of it, and these allegations are true,
- 23:15Speaker 2: then he deserves everything he has coming to him. He
- 23:19Speaker 2: made a very, very stupid decision and he should have
- 23:24Speaker 2: to pay for that decision. But selfishly, it pains me
- 23:28Speaker 2: to read that name in this type of story, and
- 23:32Speaker 2: it also pains me to read I never interviewed class A,
- 23:36Speaker 2: but as a baseball fan, it pains me to read
- 23:39Speaker 2: this about a guy who, if he kept doing what
- 23:41Speaker 2: he was doing, might have been in Cooperstown one day,
- 23:45Speaker 2: or at least might have been able to live with
- 23:47Speaker 2: the legacy of being an elite closer that when we
- 23:51Speaker 2: would look back in the twenty twenties, we would review
- 23:54Speaker 2: his contributions to baseball the way we look back at
- 23:56Speaker 2: like how Eric Ganne contributed as a reliever in the
- 24:00Speaker 2: early two thousands, or or Chapman for so long, or
- 24:03Speaker 2: someone that he would have been in the same conversation,
- 24:06Speaker 2: and now, due to just selfish and stupid decisions that
- 24:12Speaker 2: he's alleged to have made, he's going to be remembered
- 24:15Speaker 2: for something totally different and he's going to have to
- 24:18Speaker 2: pay a hafty price. And that's that is just a
- 24:20Speaker 2: true shame that you could take something that we all love,
- 24:24Speaker 2: the game of baseball, and use it to make decisions
- 24:29Speaker 2: like that.
- 24:29Speaker 1: So that's all I have to say.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Yeah, go ahead, Yeah, I think it's nice to see
- 24:35Speaker 5: MLB respond already with the limiting prop bets to two
- 24:40Speaker 5: hundred dollars max bets. I think prop bets are kind
- 24:44Speaker 5: of the the root of all of this. I mean,
- 24:47Speaker 5: it's happening in the NBA. It's all been the prop bets.
- 24:52Speaker 5: So it's going to be interesting to see how regulayers
- 24:55Speaker 5: respond to that, how the leagues respond to that, because
- 24:58Speaker 5: it's a it's not your nineteen betting anymore where it's
- 25:02Speaker 5: just win laws throwing games. It's all these minutia and
- 25:06Speaker 5: that comes with the advanced saniel lakes to spot it.
- 25:09Speaker 5: But it's a whole new can of worms, brand new problem.
- 25:12Speaker 5: So we'll see.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:14Speaker 2: I mean, hell, Class A was doing this routinely, allegedly
- 25:20Speaker 2: was doing this routinely and was still the best in
- 25:23Speaker 2: the world at what he was doing. So when you're
- 25:26Speaker 2: able to do something like that, and had it not
- 25:30Speaker 2: been for this advanced technology that sportsbooks have, we would
- 25:34Speaker 2: have never known.
- 25:37Speaker 1: No.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Yeah, And the sad part is, I'm willing to unintended.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I'm willing to bet that there's gonna be more stuff
- 25:46Speaker 2: like this before this is all said and done. There
- 25:49Speaker 2: might be maybe not connected directly to this operation, but
- 25:53Speaker 2: this won't be the last instance we read of, not
- 25:57Speaker 2: in baseball, not in basketball.
- 25:59Speaker 1: It's this stuff's going to keep happening.
- 26:02Speaker 2: And I really really hope that people who love playing
- 26:06Speaker 2: the game of baseball, people who worked as hard as
- 26:08Speaker 2: Josh Harrison did and all these other athletes did to
- 26:12Speaker 2: maximize a dream that we all had when we were
- 26:14Speaker 2: a little kid, to play the game in the biggest stage.
- 26:17Speaker 2: To waste it on something so stupid and so insignificant
- 26:22Speaker 2: is a true tragedy in my opinion, and I hope
- 26:25Speaker 2: that people see this story and think twice if they
- 26:27Speaker 2: ever have an opportunity to do some of these other things.
- 26:31Speaker 3: So No, I totally agree.
- 26:36Speaker 5: Us a pretty big deterent hopefully.
- 26:38Speaker 4: So it's one of those things where it's like a parent,
- 26:41Speaker 4: you tell your kids something that that's what those meetings
- 26:44Speaker 4: are on spring training. Nobody wants to do them every year,
- 26:46Speaker 4: but I mean, as we see, they are important because
- 26:50Speaker 4: there's somebody out there that really possibly needs it. So
- 26:54Speaker 4: you said, it definitely hurts, definitely for the game of
- 26:56Speaker 4: baseball just to have this in the news.
- 26:58Speaker 3: But you know, we will get through.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Yeah, we will.
- 27:02Speaker 2: And the good news is we're gonna get to talk
- 27:04Speaker 2: about more of the actual game of baseball the next
- 27:06Speaker 2: time we record this show. We've got some good stuff
- 27:09Speaker 2: coming up for Thursday's program and everything else down the line.
- 27:13Speaker 2: He's Josh Harrison, He's Platinum Key. I'm Noah Jyles. Thanks
- 27:16Speaker 2: for tuning into this week's episode. Be sure to subscribe
- 27:19Speaker 2: to this channel if you don't already, and give us
