- 0:16Speaker 1: to the Return to Glory Podcast.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Turn to Glory Podcast.
- 0:29Speaker 3: It's Friday, August seventh, in our daily podcast. We are
- 0:35Speaker 3: live on YouTube here this morning and the replays can
- 0:40Speaker 3: also be found on YouTube in anywhere you get your podcasts.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's Friday, and every Friday we are going to try
- 0:49Speaker 2: to bring.
- 0:50Speaker 3: On a special guest to get their opinions, their take
- 0:54Speaker 3: on where things are at with Husker football, and so
- 1:00Speaker 3: it's no better than starting with the number one Husker
- 1:03Speaker 3: football fan in the state of Nebraska.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Artie Serney.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Welcome Hunter, sir.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I'm expecting at least two Searn spasms today, so we
- 1:20Speaker 3: better get a couple of those here for the podcast.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But first off, just want to kick it off.
- 1:25Speaker 3: By asking you what's the overall vibe right now? What's
- 1:28Speaker 3: your overall takes on the off season as we begin
- 1:33Speaker 3: fall camp.
- 1:35Speaker 5: Well, a good thing I like is that they are
- 1:37Speaker 5: just stayed quiet, didn't do anything. But to me, that
- 1:43Speaker 5: is also just quite confidence. And I believe that we're
- 1:50Speaker 5: going to make baby steps this year. But how big
- 1:53Speaker 5: we improve is going to depend on so many different factors.
- 2:00Speaker 3: The biggest storyline that you can think of right now
- 2:05Speaker 3: that goes in the off season. But what are people
- 2:08Speaker 3: overlooking that you think is very important?
- 2:11Speaker 2: I do like that you.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Mentioned the quietness of the off season because I think
- 2:16Speaker 3: that's a very.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Big thing and it hasn't been that way.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I think that may be a reason, particularly that we
- 2:25Speaker 3: might find ourselves better than expectations, which we haven't done
- 2:29Speaker 3: in ten years.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Yep. One thing I think that.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Most people are probably overlooking because in my mind, everybody
- 2:40Speaker 5: really focuses on the offense and the defense.
- 2:43Speaker 4: I really think that the special.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Teams is what is to me a huge, huge unknown
- 2:49Speaker 5: and it could be a major factor.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Just simply are we stepping.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Forward after we lose our special teams coordinator or are
- 3:00Speaker 5: we going to step back?
- 3:03Speaker 4: You know?
- 3:03Speaker 5: I think the two fellows that are there as a
- 3:06Speaker 5: co coordinators now, Maher.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Has been decent.
- 3:14Speaker 5: I mean, just how much coaching does he really understand
- 3:18Speaker 5: as opposed to just being a pro athlete and a good,
- 3:23Speaker 5: really good college kicker and things like that. Just how
- 3:26Speaker 5: do you does he understand how you get how do
- 3:29Speaker 5: you motivate people and things like that.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Maybe he's just gonna I'm sure he's reached out.
- 3:34Speaker 5: I think I very even read articles where he's reached
- 3:37Speaker 5: out to different people. But to me, that's going to
- 3:40Speaker 5: be a huge thing is we cannot have We've.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Got to go back to the old days. A year
- 3:47Speaker 4: and year out we just had great kickers, great kickers.
- 3:50Speaker 5: I mean, you never worried about anything. We just have
- 3:53Speaker 5: to to get back to that.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And yeah, I from an offseason standpoint too, have not
- 4:00Speaker 3: heard much about special teams, And when we got Eckler
- 4:04Speaker 3: last year heading into the year, that was a very
- 4:07Speaker 3: big talking point. And I thought special teams was very good,
- 4:13Speaker 3: like it a lot better than it has been obviously
- 4:16Speaker 3: last year, But they're not.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Everything was perfect and it never will be perfect.
- 4:22Speaker 3: But that is a big part of the game, and
- 4:26Speaker 3: it can change these one score games that we've been
- 4:28Speaker 3: in a lot the past several years.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Well, yeah, that's that's why we lost so many one
- 4:34Speaker 4: score games. Just something fumbled, a.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Fumbled, a punt, fumbled, a kickoff, short kick, whatever it
- 4:48Speaker 5: might be.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Next question here kind of a two parter one.
- 4:55Speaker 3: We talked on Tuesday this week about Anthony Calandria and
- 5:01Speaker 3: some of his differences that he's going to bring to
- 5:02Speaker 3: the table than in Dylan. And then two, is there
- 5:06Speaker 3: name another player outside of Calandria that you're buying in
- 5:11Speaker 3: the most stock heading.
- 5:12Speaker 4: In the year, Well, I think the one that Quasi.
- 5:18Speaker 4: I think.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Just from what you know again they're talking about.
- 5:25Speaker 4: I was listening to a little bit of the.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Husker team report last night and just listening to the
- 5:35Speaker 5: coach talk about how he and obviously a lot of
- 5:39Speaker 5: the other receivers are taking the top off the offense
- 5:42Speaker 5: and they think that.
- 5:45Speaker 4: They're able.
- 5:45Speaker 5: It made it sound like that he and some others
- 5:48Speaker 5: have really have a chance to just extend the field.
- 5:51Speaker 4: And allow for long passing.
- 5:52Speaker 5: And with Calandria, with what he can do as far
- 5:57Speaker 5: as extending plays, he's going to allow them trying to
- 6:01Speaker 5: leak out. And I think we're going to have some
- 6:06Speaker 5: major plays and it's not just going to be in
- 6:08Speaker 5: the first three games. I think it's going to be
- 6:10Speaker 5: consistent all season long. So I'm pretty excited about that.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Just our receiving corps.
- 6:17Speaker 3: The word that gets thrown around a lot with offense
- 6:21Speaker 3: and defense too, but is identity. How do you envision
- 6:25Speaker 3: our offensive identity with Gulch Horderson potentially changing.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Or a jesting with Calanderia at quarterback.
- 6:36Speaker 5: Well, I think there's just I just still think the
- 6:40Speaker 5: biggest thing is it's going to be a situation where
- 6:43Speaker 5: they're going to be in scramble at times, especially when
- 6:48Speaker 5: you get into like five or six seconds after the snap.
- 6:52Speaker 5: He's going to make plays with his feet, and I
- 6:55Speaker 5: think that's what they're really working on. I think that
- 6:58Speaker 5: and I think that's that's what good football is. I
- 7:01Speaker 5: think all you look at the top teams, they all
- 7:04Speaker 5: have quarterbacks that can move around and.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Run and just he's very elusive.
- 7:10Speaker 5: I mean again, we still have to continue to coach
- 7:15Speaker 5: him up because he had a bad situation when whatever
- 7:20Speaker 5: Virginia and multiple turnovers and things like that, but he
- 7:27Speaker 5: had get what the number was, was it six or
- 7:31Speaker 5: eight or nine last year and twenty eight or twenty
- 7:36Speaker 5: nine touchdown pass or something like that. We have to
- 7:41Speaker 5: if he repeats that year that he had in Vegas,
- 7:45Speaker 5: We're going to be absolutely fine with him. It's got
- 7:48Speaker 5: to be very similar. And I even liked where.
- 7:53Speaker 4: He mentioned that.
- 7:56Speaker 5: We have taken some of the Vegas plays and put
- 8:00Speaker 5: him into our playbook.
- 8:04Speaker 2: You want to talk about being quiet too. I I
- 8:07Speaker 2: don't know if you heard. I'm sure you did because
- 8:09Speaker 2: you listen to everything. His interview after practice the other day,
- 8:15Speaker 2: and there's really his first time talking extensively to Husker media.
- 8:22Speaker 2: He is very short and to the point with his answers.
- 8:28Speaker 6: And as we've talked a lot about media and how
- 8:33Speaker 6: you display yourself the information that you share, that give
- 8:38Speaker 6: gives me some excitement with how unrevealing I guess he
- 8:43Speaker 6: is with a lot of his comments.
- 8:45Speaker 2: He's very to the point. He's very much seems like
- 8:47Speaker 2: he's all about business.
- 8:49Speaker 3: And yeah, he's not rude or harsh by any means
- 8:52Speaker 3: with the media, but he's it's not like he's going
- 8:54Speaker 3: to give you this long, drawn out, elaborate answer where
- 8:58Speaker 3: you know, we've had other players and coaches specifically including
- 9:01Speaker 3: a rule that really do that and and go probably
- 9:06Speaker 3: talk more and longer than they should. So that was
- 9:11Speaker 3: one thing that I really liked about him, and really
- 9:13Speaker 3: probably the most thing I like about him so far
- 9:16Speaker 3: without seeing him play, was how he handled the media.
- 9:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I liked it too, because I I thought a
- 9:23Speaker 5: lot of times he said about oh gosh, it seemed
- 9:25Speaker 5: like five six words, and then he just looked around like, Okay,
- 9:28Speaker 5: what's the next one?
- 9:30Speaker 4: I like that. Yeah, I would agree. I totally agree
- 9:34Speaker 4: with that.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Uh, talk about some positives. What's your biggest concern as
- 9:41Speaker 2: we head end of the year.
- 9:44Speaker 4: That the D align.
- 9:46Speaker 7: To me, one of the big things is if the
- 9:49Speaker 7: D line is not good enough.
- 9:52Speaker 5: And I I don't know, You're hearing good things about
- 9:56Speaker 5: the defensive coordinator and things like that, but it still
- 9:58Speaker 5: comes down to the players.
- 10:00Speaker 4: If we have not upgraded the D line enough.
- 10:03Speaker 5: I think that if we're still going to have a
- 10:06Speaker 5: hard time defending the run, or if we also don't
- 10:10Speaker 5: get pass rush.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Those are the two areas to watch.
- 10:14Speaker 5: I think, especially in the first Big Ten game when
- 10:17Speaker 5: we play Michigan State, how much what kind of push
- 10:21Speaker 5: are we getting? Can we see that we're getting some
- 10:27Speaker 5: depth on pass rushes? Are we clogging up everything? And again,
- 10:32Speaker 5: now that we have a four man front, that should
- 10:37Speaker 5: be better for the Big Ten, but that worre you
- 10:41Speaker 5: know that's going to be the number one thing I'm
- 10:43Speaker 5: watching is just the lines. And again, if you're if
- 10:51Speaker 5: we don't get back to the old days of dominant lines,
- 10:55Speaker 5: and I mean offense and defense, you know, that's where
- 10:58Speaker 5: it all goes, because I don't give a crap one
- 11:01Speaker 5: on what level of football it is. If you don't
- 11:04Speaker 5: dominate in the lines, you're not gonna be worth a hoot.
- 11:08Speaker 5: We got to get there, damn right.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Taking a look at our schedule here, uh, you know,
- 11:16Speaker 3: it's definitely loaded on the on the back end. Last
- 11:19Speaker 3: couple of years, we've gone five and one and ended
- 11:22Speaker 3: the year seven and six. When you're looking at the schedule,
- 11:26Speaker 3: what's the the biggest swing swing game that you see
- 11:31Speaker 3: and the impact that it could have.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Sports Illustrated to have an article about three games that
- 11:40Speaker 5: could really make or break our season. They mentioned Michigan State, Indiana.
- 11:46Speaker 5: I'm trying to remember who the last one was, Oh, Washington.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I think Washington at that time in the season is
- 11:58Speaker 4: probably going to be the big swing. Now again there was.
- 12:03Speaker 4: They wrote also about Indiana and just some things.
- 12:06Speaker 5: That they might have some issues with.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I mean, if.
- 12:13Speaker 5: To beat right now, I think the preseason six, if
- 12:17Speaker 5: we had a chance to beat them, I mean then
- 12:19Speaker 5: that changes everything. That would change everything. If you be
- 12:23Speaker 5: Indiana and I don't see that necessarily happen.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Will you storm the field?
- 12:31Speaker 5: I think that is a distinct possibility on that particular day,
- 12:34Speaker 5: that could be. Well again, Hobby going, we're back, We're
- 12:40Speaker 5: back to the seventies and the nineties, in the eighties.
- 12:42Speaker 7: Yeah, but.
- 12:46Speaker 4: There could be there could be somebody jumping a fence
- 12:48Speaker 4: there or something.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Then how about how about the goal post? You sit
- 12:52Speaker 3: right behind the goal posts.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I'm not going to jump get on them because I can't.
- 12:56Speaker 5: I'm too old. I can't get up there. They're gonna
- 13:01Speaker 5: have to bring them down to me. And then when
- 13:03Speaker 5: they're carrying them on their shoulders, then I'll.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Get on top of it, probably do a belly flop
- 13:06Speaker 4: right on top of one of the goalposts. I'd have
- 13:10Speaker 4: to do my go.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Last thing of the schedule here. What do we get
- 13:17Speaker 2: to do to beat Iowa?
- 13:22Speaker 4: Just finish that's finish a game.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Make sure we have the last possession, don't turn the
- 13:33Speaker 5: ball over, things like all things that have happened.
- 13:37Speaker 4: Finish the game.
- 13:40Speaker 2: We I think we play at eleven am this this
- 13:43Speaker 2: Friday out there.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I know that's right.
- 13:47Speaker 3: The first couple of weeks of basketball season. So well,
- 13:51Speaker 3: to see if we can make it, make a little
- 13:52Speaker 3: road trip out to Iowa City and might involve traveling
- 13:57Speaker 3: through the night.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I don't know, pop figure it out.
- 14:01Speaker 5: No, coach, I won't mention coach, He'll be we'll probably
- 14:04Speaker 5: have Saturday practice. But I'll say, coach, I hadn't gone,
- 14:08Speaker 5: might have the flu Husker flu.
- 14:10Speaker 3: The other road game that you're heading to and I'm
- 14:14Speaker 3: playing to head to as well, is out in Eugene
- 14:18Speaker 3: with Oregon. What were your thoughts on Dylan Royola's comments
- 14:23Speaker 3: the other day in his press conference.
- 14:27Speaker 5: Just thought, I just thought a little bit of just
- 14:31Speaker 5: trying to get a couple of digs in, that's all,
- 14:33Speaker 5: you know.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Nope.
- 14:37Speaker 5: At the same time, he every time he talks in
- 14:41Speaker 5: some way, he's a little bit like Rule. He talks
- 14:46Speaker 5: to build up his team, his teammates, and that's what
- 14:51Speaker 5: he did when he was at Nebraska. And so I
- 14:54Speaker 5: thought when Dylan talked, he was just trying to build
- 14:56Speaker 5: up his guys more than.
- 14:59Speaker 4: You know. I don't think he was really making any
- 15:02Speaker 4: super cheap shots.
- 15:04Speaker 2: I mean, everything was factual, right, Everything was true that.
- 15:06Speaker 5: He said, well, there's better athletes out there, Well, gosh,
- 15:11Speaker 5: their preseason one, two or three year in every poll.
- 15:14Speaker 4: So of course that's the true. I mean, that is
- 15:18Speaker 4: factual based on.
- 15:23Speaker 1: But I.
- 15:25Speaker 4: I've always said, I'm not sure why they have.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Preseason polls though, wait, first polls should come out after
- 15:31Speaker 5: maybe five or six games.
- 15:36Speaker 4: It's just something to talk about more than anything.
- 15:40Speaker 2: All Right, A couple of fun questions here to finish
- 15:42Speaker 2: out this Friday. Give one hot take and make it bold.
- 15:49Speaker 3: It's either gonna look really brilliant and you're gonna look
- 15:52Speaker 3: like a genius that you are, or absolutely terrible come November.
- 15:58Speaker 4: To me, that's pretty easy.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Huskers are in the top four in the Big ten,
- 16:05Speaker 5: top four, then we could be gone to the mops.
- 16:12Speaker 4: We can get.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Uh, would you rather let me ask you this? With
- 16:18Speaker 2: the playoffs? Would you rather obviously get to get a
- 16:23Speaker 2: buye in this twelve team format, you have.
- 16:26Speaker 4: To be top four, top four, But.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Would you rather get a bye and be really really good,
- 16:35Speaker 3: let's say be eleven and one, or would you rather
- 16:39Speaker 3: go like ten to two, nine to three and get
- 16:41Speaker 3: a host a home game in the first round even
- 16:44Speaker 3: though it's the round before.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Would would you rather for the team get a buy
- 16:49Speaker 2: and not play a home game or would.
- 16:50Speaker 4: You rather get a home game home game? I want
- 16:54Speaker 4: to go.
- 16:55Speaker 2: I was gonna say you're going to see that you're
- 16:57Speaker 2: sacrificing a round for a home game.
- 17:00Speaker 4: It's a step.
- 17:03Speaker 7: It's a step. That's all I think we need to do.
- 17:06Speaker 7: And I first of all, nine and three.
- 17:14Speaker 5: In the Big Ten and the three games that everybody
- 17:18Speaker 5: says we're going to lose in the Big Ten, especially,
- 17:22Speaker 5: I'm still not sure if that would make the playoffs.
- 17:26Speaker 5: I think got to get to ten and two, and
- 17:31Speaker 5: there's gonna be teams that are ten and two that
- 17:33Speaker 5: don't make it, especially if they're in certain conferences or whatever.
- 17:41Speaker 2: So last thing I am aready do here with you.
- 17:44Speaker 3: I'm going to go through our games really quick, rapid fire,
- 17:47Speaker 3: on our schedule, and you are going to say, without hesitation.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Win or loss in each one.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Got it?
- 17:54Speaker 3: I believe we did this at the Eagles Club and
- 17:57Speaker 3: the Actress last year. Yes, at it's eleven and one.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yeah, here we go. Yep.
- 18:06Speaker 8: Ohio when bowling Green, when North Dakota, when at Michigan State,
- 18:16Speaker 8: when Maryland at home, when Indiana at home, loss at Oregon,
- 18:24Speaker 8: lost Washington, when at Illinois, when at Rutgers, when Ohio
- 18:35Speaker 8: State loss at Iowa, when there's your nine to three, Yeah, yep, yep.
- 18:44Speaker 2: And would you say that's enough for the playoffs? Yes
- 18:48Speaker 2: or no?
- 18:50Speaker 5: Probably not, probably not no playoff for addiction from the pub.
- 18:56Speaker 5: I don't think that would make an US eleven seed
- 18:58Speaker 5: because the twelve seed will go to the group of
- 19:01Speaker 5: five or whatever. Typically that would make us a levency
- 19:05Speaker 5: and I don't see us. I don't think we'll get
- 19:08Speaker 5: enough respect. I really don't. I don't think I think
- 19:12Speaker 5: we have to go ten and two to ever make
- 19:14Speaker 5: the playoffs. You're gonna still think and oh, they're.
- 19:18Speaker 7: A little bit better.
- 19:18Speaker 5: But I don't think beaton Iowa in the last game
- 19:23Speaker 5: of the season, go nine to three, is going to
- 19:24Speaker 5: make us a playoff team if it does go with it.
- 19:29Speaker 7: But I also think that Iowa game will if the
- 19:35Speaker 7: Iowa game will almost.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Ensure us, say either a nine or eight game season,
- 19:39Speaker 4: thou doubt.
- 19:41Speaker 3: With your nine and three prediction, Give me your ceiling.
- 19:46Speaker 3: So ceiling obviously should be something higher than nine and three.
- 19:49Speaker 3: So if everything goes perfectly as planned and exceeding expectations,
- 19:56Speaker 3: what's the ceiling, and then give me your floor. If
- 20:00Speaker 3: things just go very poorly and do not go well,
- 20:05Speaker 3: what's the worst case scenario?
- 20:08Speaker 5: I don't see us getting any better than ten and two.
- 20:12Speaker 5: If we can beat one of the tough three, that
- 20:16Speaker 5: will be amazing, And.
- 20:19Speaker 4: The floor is probably.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Six and six or five and seven. We may just
- 20:27Speaker 5: I mean, if again, depth is everything. I don't know
- 20:33Speaker 5: if we have enough depth, if we have any key injuries,
- 20:36Speaker 5: if all of a sudden people are going down, I
- 20:39Speaker 5: don't know if, especially in the lines, if we have
- 20:43Speaker 5: enough injuries, because then well Calandria, he'll be running for
- 20:50Speaker 5: his life, which is better than Raila bumbling for his life.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Well maybe that maybe that'll keep us at seven and
- 21:01Speaker 5: five if things go bad, maybe that's the worst case.
- 21:04Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 21:07Speaker 3: All right, Pop, appreciate you jumping on this Friday in morning.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Can I get one last GBR cern spasm that did
- 21:21Speaker 3: not come through because it yelled, but I love it?
- 21:25Speaker 4: Let it go.
- 21:27Speaker 2: All right, thanks sir?
- 21:30Speaker 7: See.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the headline says, but the missis stays the Memorial
- 21:36Speaker 1: Stadium to PBA days, football Saturdays, basketball nights, every story,
- 21:42Speaker 1: chasing red and white, recruiting, busting time, comments, camp battles,
