Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Tom Kakert talks Hawkeyes, Mike Palm from Circa Sports & Trent's Picks
Transcript
- 0:11All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:14a Friday, the last non football Friday until early Feb.
- 0:24Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
- 0:27Miller and Condon with you. Trent Condon, Ken Miller talking
- 0:29sports with you for the next couple of hours.
- 0:32Appreciate your starting your afternoon here with us on the
- 0:35Iowa Sports Radio Network. Wherever you're listening.
- 0:38We're grateful that you are, whether that be in State 8 or on
- 0:41the iheart app. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:44program in the next couple of hours.
- 0:46We'll start with our friend Eugene Repay covers Iowa State
- 0:49for the Des Moines Register. Matt Campbell's final press
- 0:53conference prior to the K State game was held yesterday.
- 0:56We'll recap that pick Eugene's brain on some of the training
- 1:00camp stories. But he's been able to glean
- 1:02where they started, where they're at, etcetera.
- 1:04But Eugene Repay on Iowa State when he joins us here coming up
- 1:08in about 25 minutes. Then we'll hear from Mitch
- 1:11Holtis. It is on tape today as the
- 1:14Chiefs are in Seattle for pre season game number 2.
- 1:18After that, we'll give 4 of you an opportunity to win some grub
- 1:21from the chicken coop. Three locations in Urbandale,
- 1:2512725, Meredith, West Des Moines, 60th and Ashworth and in
- 1:28Ankeny just southwest of the OR of the D Mac campus on oral
- 1:34labor. So that's coming up to at the
- 1:36end of the first hour of the show, Tom Caker will talk Hawks
- 1:39to kick off our number 2, and I'm guessing a very happy Mike
- 1:43Palm from Circa Sports will join us about 1:30.
- 1:47I'll go behind the counter and pick his brain.
- 1:50Circa had a major, major win here today.
- 1:53For those of you new to the show, yes, we talk about Circa a
- 1:56lot. The reason we're on the air is
- 1:59because Circa Sports, they are primary sponsor A.
- 2:03It's a real easy ask for both Trent and I to endorse something
- 2:06that we absolutely both believe 1000% in, in this in what they
- 2:12do both sports wagering and the property itself and just the the
- 2:16the human beings behind the property.
- 2:18But they were awarded circa circa David, the Goliath. 2 of
- 2:24them, FanDuel DraftKings, 3 entities for two non tethered
- 2:30sports wagering licenses in the state of Missouri, KC, Saint
- 2:34Louis, Saint Joe, Independence, Springfield.
- 2:37Who am I missing? You're getting a lot of.
- 2:39Them major major cities FanDuel ran third circa got one of the
- 2:45two DraftKings and circa. This is a huge win for this
- 2:48little engine that could well done Circa sports.
- 2:51So Mike Palm on that and of course we'll get some of the
- 2:53latest numbers what he's seeing etcetera, etcetera.
- 2:56Busy week out there as they hosted Best Bash 5 and their
- 2:59contest continue with both the millions of their Survivor and I
- 3:03think we'll probably stop there because I'm guessing a lot of
- 3:05our audiences. You never know, though.
- 3:08Yeah, you never know. How great would it be, though,
- 3:10if we find out that there is an Iowa entry?
- 3:13In that $100,000 buy in contest that's essentially the same as
- 3:17Survivor, but it's just obviously fewer people going for
- 3:20a, a nice prize but well done circle.
- 3:22We'll get to that at 1:30. So I guess we should start with
- 3:26the we do a little baseball. Owen Casey made it in time.
- 3:29Did you see his first swing in as a major leaguer?
- 3:32I didn't. Oh my God, Trenton it this had
- 3:35double extra bases written all over it.
- 3:37Dave Schneider, who's not a left fielder for the Blue Jays.
- 3:40He's kind of a utility guy. He's up and down between Buffalo
- 3:43and AAA and the big club in Toronto and he was in left
- 3:47field. He took a he kind of took a bad
- 3:48angle to the ball, but made an unbelievable recovery.
- 3:52Superman catch flying through the air, glove fully extended.
- 3:56He's a short little dude. He's like 5859, but robbed Owen
- 4:00Casey of a hit first pitch he saw from a Hall of Famer be Hall
- 4:05of Famer Max Scherzer did not fall and he would not get a hit
- 4:09for the remainder of the game. You found a price right as we
- 4:12were getting on here. So I I found it, it was minus
- 4:16180th FanDuel -155. So they expected him to, yes.
- 4:21-155 at a couple other places. So it was out there and it was
- 4:25right as it was announced. I was surprised to even see that
- 4:27in the prop market, but I think it was 4 different places that
- 4:30had it listed there. The smooth swing that he has.
- 4:33He really? Does that left-handed stick?
- 4:35It just lefties look better swinging a baseball bat.
- 4:37They do swinging a Golf Club. Do you agree?
- 4:39The left-handed? Shooting a hockey puck.
- 4:41Yeah, it just those lefties and he's got kind of everything that
- 4:44you're looking for. I'm I'm excited to watch him.
- 4:46Well, you can't won't get a chance today.
- 4:48Trent, as Craig Counsel in his infinite wisdom, is going to
- 4:50keep his ass staple to the bench.
- 4:52Give him a day, maybe to reconfigure himself.
- 4:55It's. It was a busy day getting.
- 4:57There Fairpoint Day game today. Council.
- 5:00Yeah, Council's getting killed for a number of things.
- 5:02His bat, his batting order. I mean, there's two guys are
- 5:05hitting right now, Nico Horner and Matt Shaw, and they're 7th
- 5:08and 8th in the in the batting order.
- 5:10But maybe he'll get an opportunity to pinch it.
- 5:12I'm guessing he'll get his opportunity tomorrow.
- 5:15It's going to be a part of the chicken coop giveaway here.
- 5:18Will Casey get a hit today or tomorrow?
- 5:21And again, the chicken coop rules, if you haven't played in
- 5:24the last 40 days, you're eligible whether you've won or
- 5:26not, you can't play for that 30 day period.
- 5:29So that will be one of the questions.
- 5:31Trent and I will get to it about 10 minutes or so before.
- 5:34Noon and gift certificates from the last couple of weeks will be
- 5:37going out. We're going to be catching up.
- 5:38Vacation, we're catching up. If you're been waiting or
- 5:41waiting for a call, we will get to you today, this afternoon,
- 5:44and those will be all going out this afternoon for the last few
- 5:46weeks. Stuff and you'll be in your hand
- 5:48in time for football season, which gets underway here next.
- 5:52Week And Speaking of the chicken coop, remember all August long?
- 5:54That's huge. Half price wings, the best wings
- 5:57in town has voted by by city view and Miller endorsement,
- 6:00Trent Condon endorsement. It is right there.
- 6:03Great wings half off here through August now.
- 6:06They extended it. It was only a July promotion,
- 6:08but so popular it's going to last through last through
- 6:11August. So I found the show last night.
- 6:12Thanks to one of our listeners. JA Scott, I I didn't know that
- 6:16the Kingdom was coming out. Did you know about it?
- 6:19I remember hearing about it. Did we talk about it?
- 6:22Was that the show that they wanted Taylor Swift to have a
- 6:24role in and she declined? I don't remember that.
- 6:27It wasn't that a talking point at some point last year anyways.
- 6:33I just knew that, yes, there were cameras filing around.
- 6:35There was going to be a documentary.
- 6:37I remembered that part of it, but until I saw the same tweet
- 6:39from J Scott last night, I didn't realize it was coming
- 6:42out. I I watched episode 1 last
- 6:44night. You might be aware I'm not the
- 6:47biggest chiefs fan shocker. Respect the hell out of them
- 6:51don't root for them with any bone in my body.
- 6:54He pains me to say that this team is as good as they are.
- 6:57It was pretty good. It was pretty good.
- 6:59You know why it was good A we know the part the all of them.
- 7:03We know we follow the team. Mitch joins us everyday he's a
- 7:07big part of it. Blair Kirkov has numerous
- 7:10appearances in the show. So it's good to see people that
- 7:13you know that we actually have on and no etcetera.
- 7:16But just the story in the behind and and their quest to, you
- 7:19know, become the first team to win back-to-back to back and
- 7:23what what impressed me last night not yeah, it didn't
- 7:26impress me because I didn't know the back story of how they got
- 7:30to Kansas City. I knew they moved from Dallas to
- 7:33Kansas City. The old.
- 7:35Texans. The old Texans, but I don't, I
- 7:37did not know what was behind it. So Lamar Hunt, what's the what's
- 7:44the the hunt now that owns it's Griff nuts Griffin.
- 7:47It's not a weird name. It's Clark Hunt.
- 7:49Clark Hunt is the face of them now.
- 7:56You and I probably wouldn't have hung out with in college.
- 7:59He doesn't look like he's the most fun dude.
- 8:01Sure, right. But he's the richest dude, so
- 8:03maybe. We would have.
- 8:05We would have found that out. Right.
- 8:07But you know, regardless of his the fun he's had in his life or
- 8:10not, he has pretty lot of fun because he owns the Super Bowl.
- 8:12But just but his I guess it would be his grandfather.
- 8:17You know, he saw the success of the NFL and this is in its
- 8:20infancy and tried to get an expansion team and in Dallas
- 8:27before the Cowboys. And they said, no, no, we're
- 8:31good. We don't need any more teams,
- 8:32we're good. But at this point there was
- 8:34mostly an East Coast league with, you know, the, the, the
- 8:37Giants and the, the, the Eagles and dot dot dot.
- 8:40And then the two teams out West, the, the Niners and, and the
- 8:43Rams and the old man, the Lamar Hunt, I got her name right.
- 8:48Lamar Hunt said, oh the hell with you, I'm going to start my
- 8:52own league. And they found 9 owners.
- 8:54That's how the AFL. And that's how the AFL started,
- 8:57and it started in Dallas. So you know what the NFL did?
- 9:00Screw you. Put a team there, we're going.
- 9:02To put an NFL team there and reading the writing on the
- 9:06proverbial hall a wall rather, Hunt decided to move his team to
- 9:11Kansas City and the rest is history.
- 9:12And the merger would soon happen and we'd have AFC versus NFC and
- 9:16we'd have the matriculating down the field and it's it was a
- 9:20really I'm glad I watched it. Baseball was over at that point.
- 9:23It was a light night of baseball.
- 9:25The Braves had dispatched the Mets.
- 9:27The Diamondbacks were kicking the crap out of the Rockies.
- 9:30So I. Blowing a lead against the
- 9:31Tigers. Yeah, I don't watch the end of
- 9:33that. God, just unbelievable.
- 9:35Picked our thrown out at home and Phil drawn in just it's just
- 9:39a well, you're going nowhere anyways, You may as well lose,
- 9:42right? But glad I watched it.
- 9:44Glad I was tipped off to it and obviously Taylor Swift is a big
- 9:49part of it without being part of it.
- 9:51Sure, right. The behind the scenes as to, you
- 9:53know, how they're going to, you know, get the most famous person
- 9:56in the world into the building, etcetera.
- 9:57And is this real or not? And the people that you know
- 9:59might MENA Kimes, this is this is just fabricated.
- 10:02This is just it's really it was really good.
- 10:04I'm glad I watched it. If you get a chance, I think you
- 10:06should. Speaking of Taylor, did you
- 10:08watch outside of any? Clips.
- 10:09No nothing. No, I'm not a big podcaster but
- 10:12but it was hard. Like you click on one and you're
- 10:15on that the. Algorithm gets you.
- 10:17The algorithm gets what's it called?
- 10:18It's not the for you. It's the whatever it is on
- 10:22Twitter, you click, it's for you.
- 10:23Is that what it is for you? Yeah, for you and following,
- 10:27Right. So, so I click on one and I get
- 10:29a million of them. It was really good.
- 10:31It was so Tara was watching. The whole thing started at 6:00,
- 10:34so I had to record a podcast of my own for the lockdown at 6:00
- 10:38when I got back with Jack. And so she started up right
- 10:42away, went upstairs, had dinner. She hit pause.
- 10:45And then I'm doing things I had to like change the air filter in
- 10:48the car. Had a couple of just errands
- 10:49around the house that I'm running around with.
- 10:50So you're pretty handy. Yeah, not.
- 10:52At all. Not at all.
- 10:54I took a lot of I. Didn't know where the air filter
- 10:56was. Well, YouTube goes a long way in
- 10:58helping you figure out all of their point.
- 11:00Yeah, yeah. Back in the old days, there was
- 11:01no chance that was going to be happening.
- 11:02But I'm. And every time I come back in
- 11:04and she's she's still watching. The thing was a couple hours.
- 11:07It wasn't. That long, It was that long.
- 11:09And so I'd sit there and watch for 5 minutes.
- 11:11Or what are they talking about now or anything interesting.
- 11:14But she loved it as a huge Taylor Swift fan.
- 11:17My daughter loved it as a Taylor Swift fan.
- 11:19There were I think some entertaining parts about it, but
- 11:22it's just so weird. And then you see the views.
- 11:24I she pointed at one point, there's 1.4 million people
- 11:28watching at that time that were watching that thing on YouTube,
- 11:32watching it live. It just, it takes it to another
- 11:35level. So from there, since we didn't
- 11:37get a chance to talk about it yesterday, we got something
- 11:39coming out next week. Speaking of documentaries, as
- 11:41we're waiting for football, we are deep into.
- 11:44Another football documentary. And this one I'm as excited
- 11:48about, sight unseen. Bigger than the SEC the any
- 11:52given Saturday. Bigger than that, more excited
- 11:55about that and it's about this is exciting as I've been since
- 11:59we go back to 2020 at MJ. Oh my God, last, never forget
- 12:02that. This is, and that was for
- 12:03different reasons. That's all we had.
- 12:06This is about the 1990s Dallas Cowboys.
- 12:10Really. The White House How?
- 12:12Do they get into the White House?
- 12:14From a review that I was reading last night, they don't the the
- 12:18Michael Irvin talks about everything, does he?
- 12:20You want to talk about the hookers, You want to talk about
- 12:22the blow, you're going to get it.
- 12:23Plenty of both. Yeah, Michael Irvin is going to
- 12:26talk about it. I read, then another review
- 12:29afterwards. Heard incredible things on that
- 12:31one. This is I mean Apex for me 90s.
- 12:36Football. It just it, it felt like it was
- 12:38the biggest thing. It was my age.
- 12:40It was me becoming a sports fan at that kind of level, kind of
- 12:43everything together. And I hated the Cowboys because
- 12:45they were so good. And that would kind of take it
- 12:48to another level. But the stories, the mystique,
- 12:51all those things are all together.
- 12:54One thing I also did here is maybe it's the first 5-10
- 12:57minutes, a little bit slow. Getting out of the gate feels
- 12:59like, oh, is this just going to be a Jerry Jones production?
- 13:02After those first 10 minutes, though, it gets past that and it
- 13:05becomes really, really good. So I wonder if there was ever a
- 13:08way to measure this, and I'm guessing there isn't.
- 13:11The 90s Cowboys versus the 86 Mets because they put the fun
- 13:18meter in the red zone. They did that.
- 13:21They did, yes. Doc Gooden and Strawberry and
- 13:24even Keith Hernandez and Lenny Dykstra and dot dot dot.
- 13:29Throwing firecrackers at people. So on, so on and so on and so
- 13:32forth. This guys were they pushed the
- 13:34boundaries. Now they really and truly did
- 13:37it. And we know from listening to
- 13:38the history of the Cowboys, they did as well.
- 13:41So what? So what's this on?
- 13:43Is it one of the? Netflix.
- 13:44So it's another Netflix. It's a Netflix one.
- 13:46It will be premiering I believe next Tuesday, August 19th.
- 13:49Is that next? Next Tuesday?
- 13:50Let me bring up my calendar quick.
- 13:51Yes, that is on Tuesday as it'll be premiered.
- 13:54How many episodes do you know? Great question.
- 13:57Let me see if I can find a little bit more about the
- 13:59episodes and kind of the nuts and bolts about it.
- 14:01I believe, I'm almost positive it's multiple, multiple episodes
- 14:05though. Let's see how many episodes.
- 14:08Let's see if anything pops up here.
- 14:10What's a I got 10 episodes? Holy mackerel, how are we
- 14:13supposed to get through that before the football season?
- 14:15Well, it's the week zero, and then there's nothing until
- 14:17Thursday. We're gonna have a busy week
- 14:19next. Week.
- 14:19Yeah, it's. Real tough being us.
- 14:22Watching really is. I can't wait.
- 14:25Even as A10 parter, I am pumped up for this one.
- 14:29And each about less than an hour I'm guessing.
- 14:31I would think, yeah. Good stuff.
- 14:33All right, I'm glad you glad you clued me in on that one, as I
- 14:37was glad I was clued in on the Chiefs last night.
- 14:39I guess two of them, two episodes came out last night.
- 14:41I got through one, but I plan on, you know, getting back to
- 14:44it. Did you see that we are retiring
- 14:47an icon today? The news from Hawkeye Land.
- 14:50Yes, Hawkeye, Elvis is hanging it up now, Is it?
- 14:53Do you know what it's related to?
- 14:55I read David Eichel's article about it.
- 14:57Yeah, and it's not health. It's not because I thought there
- 15:00was an issue there. He's just, he said he's slowing
- 15:02down. So basically he just wrote
- 15:04through kind of all his reasonings and more than
- 15:07anything it's just that, well. Isn't isn't he located now in
- 15:10San Francisco? Doesn't he live in California?
- 15:12Well, he was in Minneapolis for the longest time, was he?
- 15:14And yeah, I'm not. Sure where he is.
- 15:15He's a California. Resident that's tough to pull
- 15:18off. You sure it is?
- 15:19Even Minneapolis is difficult to pull off the the number of
- 15:22games. I saw him.
- 15:23Remember seeing him at the Pentagon in South Dakota.
- 15:25Do you? And when he did it there, yeah,
- 15:28he was kind of like the Marlins man.
- 15:29He is. He was all all over the place,
- 15:31every football game obviously, and what he did, and it was
- 15:34something that my kids always got a crack out of.
- 15:36Did they? I mean a big smile.
- 15:37He looked. The part I gotta give him
- 15:39credit, man, he pulled it off. He did and put a lot of miles
- 15:42on. I didn't realize Freddy was a
- 15:44bit based in Minnesota before he got.
- 15:46I'm pretty sure he's in California now.
- 15:48End of an era. So when did it start?
- 15:50Do you remember? When?
- 15:51About 15 years ago. So it's been that long.
- 15:53Yeah. So going back to 2010.
- 15:54Do you know why he started? No.
- 15:57Did the article I did. I saw the article I didn't read.
- 15:59This and I'm only about halfway through.
- 16:00OK. So yeah, that didn't get into
- 16:02kind of the nuts and bolts of it just the beginning, I mean.
- 16:05Did he, did he make a living being a fake Elvis prior to
- 16:08that? Did he working?
- 16:09Oh, is it for the No, no, no. Now we know how he's able to
- 16:12travel to. These gigs and yes in I'm
- 16:15reading a skimming through here, he has moved to California a
- 16:17couple years. Ago, that's what I thought,
- 16:18that's what I. Thought one of my favorite
- 16:20memories though is the picture when Iowa goes to Carolina with
- 16:24Woodbury and Giselle. Giselle hits the late shot for
- 16:28the only time in his career, and they're chest bumping and in the
- 16:33background of the picture he has Elvis.
- 16:34There's Hawkeye Elvis just screaming about as loud as both
- 16:38of those guys were as he was seated underneath the basket.
- 16:40That's still what have I. That's my favorite and what I
- 16:43think. Hawkeye, Elvis.
- 16:44That's the image that always pops into my head.
- 16:45No, that's good. Hopefully they'll come a time
- 16:48when basketball games, you know, the that, that that portion of
- 16:52the fan base, we're not looking at him.
- 16:54We're actually looking at students doing something crazy
- 16:57behind close to the floor, you know, as as it's long overdue
- 17:01because I I guess that would be you know what, trying to find an
- 17:06an example, an Iowa State related one.
- 17:09What would it be a particular personality?
- 17:12Cyclone Larry on Twitter. He's one, absolutely.
- 17:15X. But that's Mike in Waterloo.
- 17:18Yeah, but I'm talking about it, yeah.
- 17:19At the game. At the game, though.
- 17:22I can't think of anything. I can't think of anything would
- 17:24be, what do they call it, cyclone?
- 17:25Well, we had the the Waldo guy, the Jim Carrey look alike.
- 17:29Oh, that's yeah, yeah, yeah. That was short lived, though.
- 17:32That was short lived. That's not bad.
- 17:33He Yeah. Nobody's been able to stretch it
- 17:35like Hawkeye. Alps.
- 17:35No, no, no, no. You're right.
- 17:37You're right. The Jim Carrey thing.
- 17:39And he kind of annoyed me. Like the kid umpire after a
- 17:42while. Yeah.
- 17:43Went too far for it. He was seeking the camera.
- 17:45Oh, gotcha. Yeah, the another one.
- 17:47Remember, a couple years ago, there was a kid dressed up as
- 17:49the Pope. He was in the Hawkeye student
- 17:51section. And I think it was maybe just
- 17:54one game. That was it.
- 17:57Don't remember that. Yeah.
- 17:58He was just up as a Pope. And he'd be, he had a Twitter
- 18:01account then right afterwards, and I don't think he wore the
- 18:03outfit again, or at least the TV cameras.
- 18:05That that would be the thing, too.
- 18:06You get seen once, all right, Then TV cameras start to pick
- 18:08up. What if you get seen once and
- 18:10you just keep wearing it and TV doesn't pick it up again?
- 18:13Yeah. He's wearing a Pope outfit every
- 18:15game. Yeah, that.
- 18:16That does sound very fun. Good stuff.
- 18:18All right, underway on a Friday. We're going to talk to Eugene.
- 18:23Repay covers Iowa State. Matt Campbell met the media
- 18:26yesterday. We're going to be previewing a a
- 18:28real game that's. Unbelievable, isn't it?
- 18:30It's truly unbelievable. I I think August might fly by as
- 18:33any as fast as any of the months.
- 18:34I really do. Once you get to that point, it's
- 18:37just like, whoa, whoa. And no, no, yeah, The fair ends
- 18:41this week, right? And kids go back to school when
- 18:44this is the 15th. Do they have another full week
- 18:46at home? Yes, another full week at home
- 18:48before things start, at least for us in West Des Moines on the
- 18:5025th. 25th So they got 10 days left.
- 18:54All right, it's 1220 on a Friday.
- 18:57We'll take a break. We'll come back.
- 18:58Eugene Repay, We're here from Mitch Holtis this hour. 4 of you
- 19:02will get a chance to win some grub from the chicken coop this
- 19:05hour. Lots to get to Miller and Condon
- 19:07underway on a Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 19:10Network. I'm Mary Condon coming up on
- 19:2212:30 on a Friday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network momentarily
- 19:27Eugene repay from the Des Moines Register on Iowa State.
- 19:31Mitch Holtis will hear his recorded piece as he sets the
- 19:35scene for Chiefs in Seattle. And then four of you will get a
- 19:38chance to win grub from the chicken coop Eugene Repay.
- 19:41Des Moines Register joins us. Matt Campbell met the media
- 19:44yesterday for the final time prior to headed to Double it
- 19:47where Travis Hines will be on location covering for the
- 19:52register. Eugene Trenton.
- 19:53Ken, thanks for coming on. How are you?
- 19:56I'm great, I'm great. We're almost almost there, guys.
- 19:58Almost there until season kickoff.
- 20:00Yeah, absolutely. Ready or not, here it comes,
- 20:02right? You know what I want to start
- 20:04with you is a guy that I forgot about really transferred in.
- 20:09You know, we, we obviously the two receivers took our our
- 20:12center stage when it comes to the to the need area of
- 20:16replacing Higgins and Noel and obviously McDonough on the
- 20:19defensive line going to play a big role.
- 20:21What kind of camp did Trey Bell one of the corners?
- 20:23Is he a JUCO? I don't recall.
- 20:25Regardless of of where he transferred him from.
- 20:29What if? What kind of fall has Trey Bell
- 20:32had and will Do you believe he's earned one of those starting
- 20:35spots? Yeah, Trey Bell is a fascinating
- 20:39player. He he came in from the FCS level
- 20:41Lindenwood, where he was actually originally A2 sport
- 20:45athlete committed to play both basketball and football before
- 20:49deciding he actually loved football more, even though he's
- 20:51primarily a Hooper and decided to go full time with it.
- 20:54And and now here he is at Iowa State.
- 20:56He's a guy that comes in with some athleticism, some length,
- 20:59some speed. For him, the biggest adjustment
- 21:02will be getting used to the the tempo and the physicality and
- 21:05just the faster pace of play at the Big 12 and FBS level.
- 21:09But so far the the reviews for him has been great since he came
- 21:12in during the spring. They really lauded his his
- 21:15smarts, his IQ and they felt like it'd only be a matter of
- 21:18time for just got acclimated to the demands of the physicality
- 21:22and the and the speed of the game.
- 21:24And now here we are about what, like 5 months after he came in
- 21:28or four or five months after he came in and he's just continued
- 21:31to just draw a good praise. He's coming along well.
- 21:34I think he's a guy that will definitely need to watch him and
- 21:36him and Quentin Taylor Junior seem to be the the leading
- 21:39candidates for that corner spot betting to go yeah as well.
- 21:43But I I think Terry Bell's a guy that that they're high on and I
- 21:46think we're going to have to get used to seeing him starting
- 21:49alongside John, says Williams. They won't say exactly who it'll
- 21:52be yet, but I think he's a guy that will definitely get a good
- 21:54piece of the action this fall. You know, you can just mention
- 21:57the transfers of one of them, Townsend.
- 21:59I think we've been talking about so well, so much more than
- 22:01Townsend, but something that was brought up that it was kind of
- 22:04the back of my mind too is the return game and just how good he
- 22:06was at Central Florida. That was a huge piece of last
- 22:10year and a big conversation. You Jean, you're new, we're on
- 22:12the beat. But for years and years under
- 22:14Campbell, they struggled mightily in so many aspects of
- 22:17special teams. Really felt like that that was
- 22:20they they wrapped a bow on that one a year ago and getting
- 22:22Townsend there to help out in returns feels like that's going
- 22:25to go a long way as special teams being good again this
- 22:27year. Yeah, Travis Hines showed me
- 22:30some clips and and some low light plays on special teams and
- 22:33and got to be up to speed on that front.
- 22:36I know Jalen Noel was was great in in that regard.
- 22:40And they want to use Townsend in a similar manner with the way
- 22:43that they use Noel. Just a guy that can line up
- 22:45almost anywhere on the field, but then also be a guy that can
- 22:49help out on the return game. I think Townsend will help give
- 22:52that continuity. Sure.
- 22:54Well, you know, we'll we'll have to see how it how it translates.
- 22:56We haven't seen him yet in action, but they're very high on
- 23:00him and just what he can provide was just that versatility and on
- 23:03offense, but also just another returning threat that will help
- 23:06out and and kind of take the torch from Jalen Noel.
- 23:09I appreciate it, whoever it was in the media.
- 23:11The first question that was posed to Coach Campbell
- 23:14yesterday was regarding the new availability, the new injury
- 23:17report, whatever you want to call it.
- 23:19Seemed like he I, I don't know if he didn't want to answer it
- 23:23or he was certainly wasn't comfortable in answering it.
- 23:26What did you take away from his really his non answer?
- 23:29And I think he said that he's just not up to speed on it.
- 23:32And I'm paraphrasing up to speed on it enough to to comment it on
- 23:36it at that point. I, I kind of found that strange.
- 23:38That just kind of caught him off guard, seemingly.
- 23:42Yeah, no, I think we've seen that that gamesmanship from
- 23:45Campbell before where, you know, it's just never really a
- 23:49straight up answer with how guys are feeling.
- 23:52Are they actually going to be available?
- 23:53Are they actually on the mend? Are they dead a day or are they
- 23:56actually suffering through a more serious injury and it'll be
- 23:58longer than that. I think that The thing is, is
- 24:01everyone just curious from media to to fans and to coaches, you
- 24:06know, what are the penalties, right?
- 24:08You know, how strictly is it going to be enforced?
- 24:09Is it actually going to be enforced?
- 24:11When I saw the report come out about the the Big 12 move, I'm
- 24:14like, this is great. But then also we've seen guys
- 24:17like Bill Belichick in the NFL where everyone's questionable.
- 24:20And what does that even mean? Like does that even actually
- 24:23change anything? If if guys are just going to be
- 24:25day-to-day or questionable? I think you know, what was it
- 24:28for six or eight years Tom Brady was listed as day-to-day like
- 24:31and we all know he played. So I, I would love to know what
- 24:35exact, what the exact protocol is, what are the penalties and
- 24:39and just how you know, is there still going to be an element of
- 24:42gamesmanship from coaches or, or just how direct and how honest
- 24:45and how forthcoming it'll be? One of the position groups we're
- 24:49trying to figure out because of all the injuries last year and
- 24:51now so many guys with experience is linebacker didn't feel like
- 24:55Coach Campbell was quite ready to to even really give you a too
- 24:58deep and how it looked. He mentioned seemingly every
- 25:00single guy. What do you believe?
- 25:02What? How is this thing going to
- 25:03shake? Who are going to be the starters
- 25:04at the linebacker group? Without, you know, they, they
- 25:08keep the the doors closed for practices and scrimmages.
- 25:11But my, my guess is that there will definitely be go to guys,
- 25:14guys like Caleb Bacon, maybe a guy like Will McLaughlin, Carson
- 25:18Willis or Caleb Rosina, and then you'll have guys that come in.
- 25:23One thing that Colby Cratch and Campbell had talked about during
- 25:25the offseason was figuring out guys strengths and specialties
- 25:29and, you know, potentially utilizing different guys or
- 25:32mixing guys in depending on the down and distance.
- 25:35If you need someone who's maybe better pass coverage or someone
- 25:38who's better as like blitzing on short yardage, maybe you'll put
- 25:42those guys in. I think that they'll they
- 25:44definitely have their their primary line.
- 25:47But you know, I thought it was interesting.
- 25:49Chavez hide asked. What are you going to lean on
- 25:52certain people or is it going to be like hockey lineups where you
- 25:55you just sub them in and sub them out?
- 25:57So I think that they they got to have their go to guys, but I
- 26:01wouldn't be surprised if they mix guys in and just have a
- 26:03rotation and kind of keep all those mouths happy and then keep
- 26:06everyone engaged in it. One of the guys that got a lot
- 26:10of a lot of chatter is as this this August has been James Neal.
- 26:16I wonder if his trajectory is similar to where Jalen Travis
- 26:20was. Obviously Travis just got there,
- 26:22played one year after coming from the Ivy League and turned
- 26:24himself into fourth round pick. I wanna say you think with the
- 26:28Colts? Yeah, and, and, and seemingly
- 26:32listening to to Coach Campbell and to Clanton, Neil is, is
- 26:36maybe following in those footsteps a little bit that
- 26:39maybe, you know, that light bulb that that takes different
- 26:42people, different lengths of time to come on.
- 26:45It might be shining brightly for James Neil that he may have an
- 26:48opportunity to continue playing football after his eligibility
- 26:52expires this year. Yeah, One thing with James
- 26:55O'Neill is he was primarily a basketball player growing up.
- 26:58Didn't get into football until the senior season of high school
- 27:02when friends would ask him, coaches would beg him to play.
- 27:04And then finally, when I was senior of high school, he was
- 27:07like, all right, you know, I'll give it a shot.
- 27:09Let's let's go. Ends up helping his team win a
- 27:11state title in Georgia, Goes the JUCO route.
- 27:14And now here he is at Iowa State.
- 27:16So this is only really his fifth or sixth year of playing
- 27:19football and there's just so much room for him to grow.
- 27:23Going into the spring football session, he talked about just
- 27:27being overly hungry, getting that starting job back.
- 27:30And so far it seems like he's his undying determination has
- 27:34paid off. He's put in a lot of work this
- 27:37offseason. Coach Clinton and Coach Campbell
- 27:40have both been very, very high on on just the way that he
- 27:44performed this fall and and through spring camp.
- 27:48Coach Clinton called him the most improved player that he's
- 27:51seen of anyone in the offseason. And so it sounds like this is a
- 27:55guy that's going to be locking down that left tackle spot.
- 27:57His athleticism, you know, he waited his time behind Jalen
- 28:02Travis probably picked up a thing or two from him.
- 28:04I think with him also playing a guard and tight end, that also
- 28:07just helped his overall development as a player.
- 28:10And now he's a guy that's looking to reclaim that full
- 28:12time starting spot in 2025 as a senior.
- 28:16Him and Tyler Miller just anchoring those tackle spots.
- 28:19It should should be fun to watch.
- 28:21And of course, the the interior line is still being worked out.
- 28:23But when you have those two guys as a foundation, that should
- 28:26vote for good. Thanks for the Cyclones.
- 28:28Eugene, as you go into another year on the beat, where are your
- 28:32expectations with this squad getting to know him as you have
- 28:34here over the last year or so, where where do you see this team
- 28:38at this point in time? Because, boy, it feels like the
- 28:40variance can be very high for this Iowa State team.
- 28:43Yeah, I think the ceiling can be very high.
- 28:46You know, of course there you have to replace those those
- 28:49studs wide receivers that are on the NFL and also the secondary
- 28:52lost some great leaders and a couple of pieces are also now
- 28:55playing on Sundays. I think with Iowa State, the
- 28:59ceiling is very high, but also the floor is very high as well.
- 29:01Like I think that this is a team that should win at least eight
- 29:04games this this fall. You know, of course, 11 win
- 29:07season and and everything I happened last year is just such
- 29:10a big thing to follow. And the schedule is a little
- 29:12tougher this year. But I still think that Iowa
- 29:14State has a lot of pieces back. I think if the linebackers and
- 29:18and just the new starters on defense, if that D line can
- 29:21start to get more pressure on the quarterback, they should be
- 29:23in good shape. You know, with the way that I I
- 29:26see Iowa State, like people ask me if you had to guess like a
- 29:30record, I have them at at 9:00 and 4:00 just kind of early,
- 29:34early season, you know, without seeing any action.
- 29:37I have them finishing nine and four and winning a bowl game.
- 29:40But you know, which is which is good.
- 29:41I think that they'll still be in the race with the Big 12.
- 29:44Big 12 is just very wide open this year.
- 29:46So we won't really know until the game start.
- 29:48But I, I do see my, I do see Iowa State just kind of in the
- 29:52mix in the run, in the running as one of the top five, six
- 29:56teams. And, and just I think we'll
- 29:58really like one of those what we saw last year where it really
- 30:01came down to the last game of the season to see who gets into
- 30:03those, the title game. Good stuff, Eugene.
- 30:06Appreciate it. Eugene repay Des Moines
- 30:08Register, desmoinesregister.com. Eugene covers Iowa State.
- 30:12Thank you, bud. We'll talk to you in a few
- 30:13weeks. Appreciate Eugene.
- 30:14Thank you. Thank you guys.
- 30:16Yeah, good to talk to you, Gene Repay, as we check in on Iowa
- 30:19State. All right, we'll hear from Mitch
- 30:21Holtis, the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, his pregame
- 30:25thoughts prior to Seattle and Kansas City tonight.
- 30:27Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network, 1245.
- 30:33Welcome back, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 30:36Network. We take you until 2 time to hear
- 30:41from Mitch Holtis. This is a no no in radio talking
- 30:44about two restaurants sponsored pieces in the same segment but
- 30:48here we go. The first one is our friends at
- 30:51Papa John's who make it possible for Mitch Holtis the voice of
- 30:55the Kansas City Chiefs to join Trenton I every day during
- 30:58Chiefs training camp normally joins us live as he will on
- 31:02Monday, but they're in Seattle for their second pre season game
- 31:06tonight. Mitch momentarily on what he
- 31:07expects to see. Full stop. 21 right now.
- 31:12First four callers at 515-284-5966. 515-284-5966 If
- 31:19you have not participated in the chicken coop contest in the last
- 31:2330 days and that was your opportunity to do so, we'll give
- 31:26you 4 questions and a tie breaker.
- 31:28You get the most right. You will get a $50.00 gift
- 31:30certificate to use as you please at any of the three chicken coop
- 31:35locations. The runner up will get 20 wings
- 31:3851528459 and six, six. Again, if you participated in
- 31:42the last 30 days, you are ineligible.
- 31:46Here is Mitch Holtis, the voice of the Chiefs, on what he
- 31:48expects to see tonight. Okay fellas, here's your
- 31:52checklist for tonight's game. Yep, it's a game night and I
- 31:55hope, Ken, you're wearing your game jersey in the hallway.
- 31:59Same with you, Trent. But anyway, here's your
- 32:01checklist going into the night's game against the Seattle
- 32:04Seahawks. One who can keep the consistency
- 32:08with the younger receivers, Jalen Royals, Taekwon Thornton
- 32:11and Nico Ramijo. We're all good last week at
- 32:13Arizona, but can they do it again against a good Seattle
- 32:16secondary? Remember, there's 14 wide
- 32:19receivers in camp, but only 6 probably will make the 53 man
- 32:22roster on Labor Day weekend. And receivers #5 and number
- 32:26Dicks on that list must be special teams contributors.
- 32:30We're going to talk about all that tonight.
- 32:32The battle at running back will be influenced tonight.
- 32:34Carson Steele is fighting to get a spot.
- 32:37But can Elijah Mitchell, the free agent from the 49ers, show
- 32:40a burst? Kareem Hunt probably won't play
- 32:42tonight. He's got a minor quad injury.
- 32:44Tight end. Can Robert Tonyon, the former
- 32:46Packers star, can he become the new Blake Bell on this team?
- 32:50Tonyon led the Chiefs in receiving last week at Arizona,
- 32:53but can he do it again tonight? And then their second year tight
- 32:56end, Jared Wiley. The seven rookies in the 2025
- 32:59draft class are next on the list.
- 33:01They all have left an impression in this camp and it last week at
- 33:05Arizona, but can they do it again?
- 33:08And the undrafted free agents, a guy like wide receiver Jason
- 33:10Brownlee now especially Josh Simmons, will be under the
- 33:13microscope again, expected to get more repetitions.
- 33:17And then there's also the rookie defenders, cornerback Noel
- 33:20Williams and defensive in Ashton Gelati.
- 33:23And then finally, we're going to get into more detail on who's
- 33:25going to play and who won't play tonight.
- 33:27But expect a lot of snaps for Chiefs backup quarterback
- 33:30Gardner Minshew. Those snaps will be valuable,
- 33:33especially the snaps he gets with the number one offensive
- 33:36line, because that gives you a real world laboratory.
- 33:39If shudder to think Patrick Mahomes would get hurt during
- 33:43the regular season. So there you go, there's your
- 33:45checklist. It's the Chiefs and the Seahawks
- 33:48in preseason game #2 and thanks to the folks at Donald's.
- 33:52Far to the Donalds, as I should say, and Papa John's Pizza.
- 33:55It's State Fair time. It's time for Papa John's Pizza
- 33:58at papajohns.com. News specials are worked on in
- 34:02the lab right now in Johnston. The Mitch Holtz is the voice of
- 34:06the Kansas City Chiefs. What to watch for tonight as the
- 34:10Chiefs take on Seattle in preseason game number two of
- 34:14three. And they make some valid points,
- 34:16right? Obviously, Simmons, the
- 34:17offensive line focal point, some of the receivers, there's so
- 34:21many of them. You're going to have to do
- 34:22multiple things to earn your spot.
- 34:24Gardner, Mitchell, get his reps with the offensive line and #1
- 34:28offensive line. Sounds to me like we won't see a
- 34:30lot of #15 and not a real big surprise.
- 34:35Again, if you missed it earlier, if you get a chance, if you're
- 34:37on ESPN Plus or they're going to replay it again, I thought the
- 34:41Kingdom, the special on the Kansas City Chiefs was a very
- 34:44worthwhile watch. I saw episode one last night.
- 34:46Going to get to the other one episode to at some point over
- 34:50the weekend and just let this story unfold as as it may.
- 34:55All right, Fort contestants going to participate in the
- 34:58chicken coop giveaway. Again, the chicken coop
- 35:01locations. They're in Urbandale 12725
- 35:04Meredith, they're in West Des Moines, 60th and Ashworth.
- 35:07They're in Ankeny, just southwest of the DMAC campus on
- 35:11Oral Labor Rd. For all four of you, Jason,
- 35:14John, Jay and Daniel, your tiebreaker gentleman is the
- 35:19combined score of both NFL games tonight.
- 35:22There are two NFL games tonight. You know, one of them, the
- 35:26Chiefs in Seattle, the other one the Titans and the Falcons.
- 35:29So we're going to put those together.
- 35:31Combined score closest without going over is the tiebreaker.
- 35:35Jason is up first. Hello, Jason.
- 35:38How are you? Good.
- 35:39How are you guys? Doing well, The Padres and the
- 35:42Dodgers have a huge three-game series in Los Angeles starting
- 35:45tonight. Who Will Win this three-game
- 35:47series? Dodgers.
- 35:50Owen Casey, who's not scheduled to start today, will he get a
- 35:54hit either today or tomorrow? Tomorrow.
- 36:00Well, if so, you're going to say yes.
- 36:02Either one of those. You get them both.
- 36:03Yeah, you get them both. Seattle is a 3 1/2 point
- 36:06favorite over the Chiefs tonight.
- 36:09I'll take Seattle. Does Vladimir Guerrero junior
- 36:13hit a home run tonight versus Texas?
- 36:16Not bigger, but you know what, Jason?
- 36:18This weekend, this weekend, three-game series against Texas.
- 36:22Does he hit a home run this weekend?
- 36:24I'll say yes. OK.
- 36:25And the tiebreaker? Four teams, two games combined.
- 36:30Score closest without going over. 64.
- 36:35Jason, have a good weekend, man. Thank you.
- 36:36You too. Thanks.
- 36:37Appreciate it. John's with Miller and Condon.
- 36:40Hi, John. John, are you there?
- 36:44Hey, how are you? Good.
- 36:46How are? You good?
- 36:47Padres, Dodgers. Who wins this three-game series?
- 36:51Will Owen Casey get a hit today or tomorrow?
- 36:54Yeah, Seattle's a 3 1/2 point favorite over the Chiefs
- 36:57tonight. Go Chiefs.
- 37:00Vladimir Guerrero. Does he hit a home run this
- 37:02weekend? Yeah, I think he will.
- 37:06Combined score. Atlanta, Tennessee, Seattle,

- 37:21What are you doing? Good.
- 37:23Padres. Dodgers.
- 37:25Who wins the three-game series? Padres.
- 37:28Owen Casey. Will he get a hitter either
- 37:30today or tomorrow? I'm sorry.
- 37:33One more time you broke up. No.
- 37:37I think that's a no. That's a no.
- 37:38OK, Seattle gives 3 1/2 to Kansas City tonight.
- 37:43I will take Kansas City. Does Vladimir Guerrero hit a
- 37:45home run this weekend against Texas?
- 37:50Think that was another no. That's another no.
- 37:52Yeah, OK. That's OK Combined score closest
- 37:56without going over the two NFL games tonight, Jay. 50. 353 I
- 38:01heard. All right.
- 38:03Thank you, Jay. Have a good weekend, you.
- 38:05Bet you too. Thank you.
- 38:06Thank you. And Daniels next.
- 38:08Hi, Daniel. Howdy.
- 38:11All right, Padres, Dodgers, three-game series.
- 38:13Who wins? Let's go, Dodgers.
- 38:16Will Casey get a hit today or tomorrow?
- 38:19Yes. Seattle gives 3 1/2 to the
- 38:22Chiefs tonight. Let's go Seattle.
- 38:26Vladdy Junior home run this weekend against Texas.
- 38:31Yes. Combined score the two NFL games
- 38:34tonight closest without going over Daniel.
- 38:38Let's go 51. 51 You have a good weekend, Daniel.
- 38:41Thank you. Thank you.
- 38:42Appreciate it. Appreciate our good friends at
- 38:45the Chicken Coop for making this promotion available each and
- 38:49every Friday. Any consensus?
- 38:52No consensus this weekend. I was taking a peek though to
- 38:55see what the odds are for the series this weekend with the
- 38:58Dodgers. What is it?
- 38:59And the Padres? Take a take a guess, Padres.
- 39:01Come into the weekend as a as the leader in the division, but
- 39:08it's the Dodgers and they just, people just love to bet on them.
- 39:11What is it? -210.
- 39:13That's crazy. Now it's also plus 160 on the
- 39:16buy back. This is at DraftKings.
- 39:17A $0.50 gap between the two. That's what you.
- 39:21Get We wonder why Circle got a Missouri.
- 39:23Last year's. Example #1412. $0.50 gap between
- 39:28a series price. That's nuts.
- 39:30Absolutely nuts. Who do you like?
- 39:34At that price, the Padres, Yeah, I do too now.
- 39:36King was supposed to start for them tonight.
- 39:38Oh, he's not. No, he's back on the IL.
- 39:40He made one start after being out since May.
- 39:43And it's. Kershaw for the Dodgers tonight.
- 39:45So I think they're going to go. Was it Vasquez, the guy that
- 39:48they sent down when King got brought?
- 39:49I think that's who it is. But yeah, Michael King, who was
- 39:52so good the first six weeks of the year and I got hurt.
- 39:55Then he comes back and now he's got a knee problem.
- 39:57At least not another arm problem.
- 39:58Yeah, I guess. But at plus 160 still I I.
- 40:01At that price I would definitely be shopping on the pod.
- 40:04Dylan sees versus Blake Snell tomorrow and then in the finale,
- 40:08Darvish Glass. Boy, that's good.
- 40:10Darvish Glass now 310 Sunday afternoon Sunday Night Baseball,
- 40:13Seattle at Mets. Love that that Seattle gets an
- 40:16opportunity there. That is going to be the Little
- 40:18League game though, isn't it? Oh, is that where it is?
- 40:20I think this is that. Well, it's that.
- 40:22Time of year seemingly, right? Yeah, that's going on.
- 40:24You're probably right. All right.
- 40:26Great that the Mariners are in it though.
- 40:28I'm I'm with you. Some new blood.
- 40:29Yep, I'm with you. Hour 2 coming up next, Tom Caker
- 40:32leads it off Mike Palm from Circus Sports, about 130 Trent's
- 40:35plays of the day. Miller and Condon, thanks for
- 40:37being with us. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
