Transcript
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: It's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show we normally do where we taste and rink some beer.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: And there it is, my friends.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: We are back again coming at you with a new beer tonight, which is Oh, this is a good one.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: This is a fun-looking one.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Pants Off, Dance Off.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: That's the name of the beer, not what I'm doing.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: I don't believe it one bit.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Don't let him fool you.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: So the pants off, Dance Off is brewed by Millstream Brewing Co.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: in Amana, Iowa.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Was our last beer from Iowa?
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: It was.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Cheers to Iowa.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Why not?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: No, pour it out.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Wow, hot take.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: And uh we're switching off the style this week.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: So a little bit of cream ale with pistachio.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Initial thought.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Oh boy.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I think we should take a sip first.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, here we go.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Ooh, it's nutty.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Uh for the record, I'm not a fan of cream ales.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So getting off on the right food tonight.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Well, this is the last time they let me bring the beer.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Uh oh gosh, initial thoughts.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Um, it is very pistachio forward.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Like I've had I feel like I've had a lot of flavored beers, like like even like at our local beer fest, like the pickle beers this last year weren't like heavy pickle flavor.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: This is like very heavy pistachio forward.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: This is like this is a dessert beer.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: You don't have to eat dessert, you just drink this.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: That's your dessert.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: It's like that green pudding you had growing up.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: You see, this is for me, I went into this thinking like I'm gonna buy this beer because it's gonna taste like pistachio latte.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Like, this is a this is a breakfast beer, my friends.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, this is coffee.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Interesting way to think about that.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: And I actually like the pistachio punch.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, all right, that's fair.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And it's light enough that you could.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: While Brett's going in, Phil, do you want to describe the can a little bit?
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: So we got a primarily yellow label here with the pants off, dance off name of the beer here, and we have a nice little stick figure that is dancing down here with pants strewn about the rest of the can.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: So clearly dancing with their pants off.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: But I really like the coloration in this can.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Um, I think that they did uh some nice artwork on here.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I can see where like it would it would grab your attention on the shelves.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: It's not like your typical beer label.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: The name caught me first, and then I saw, ooh, pistachio.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: In the cart.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, it doesn't really have anything to do with pistachio, but yeah.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: It will start with P.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, there you go.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: It counts.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Uh okay, so let's uh get into describing this beer a little bit.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Um as we we look up the um take a look at the color and the malt.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Uh this is a typical cream ale that comes across, you know, bright colored.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Um not I mean it's it's your typical beer color.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It's not a dark beer, it's not an amber or anything like that.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: It's just a very light beer.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Um do you guys have any like um finding any like distinct flavor notes in here?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Pistachio.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, so you're not wrong.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: No, uh like there's not a lot of hops, there's not a lot of yeast flavor coming through.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: It's it's a lot of the the desserty, like cakey almost.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: It has a very distinct smell.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Yes, and I think you hit that on the head because it's like cakey is a good way to describe it, it's almost it's so pistachio-y, it smells like angel food cake.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Which you love it for breakfast.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Like, no wonder I love it.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: This makes a lot of sense.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Um, it does have an interesting, like uh when you give it a taste, like a like an initial tang.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Brett, Brett, and I were discussing this a little bit ago.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: It's like, is it is it like bitterness that's up front?
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: But I I don't think it's I think it's just that tang.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: It's like that nutty tang to it.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like when you bite into a pistachio.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: We're just going with it.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm like, I don't I don't think I taste tang when I eat pistachio.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: No, but it's like it's that like nutty flavor.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: You almost feel the nuttiness on your tongue.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what I think it is.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: It's the same taste buds.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Ross is like deep in thought over here.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Watch out.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: But it it ha it has like a um trying to get back on on the rails here.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Uh with that said, the the extreme nettiness up front, it does have a nice clean finish to it.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: So it does not last very long on your palate.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: No, it's it's it smooths out after that first little like woo.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: And it's light, it's not heavy.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: So if you don't like to be punched by hops, you're not gonna get that.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: If you don't like a really yeasty beer, you're not gonna get any of that.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: I I think my favorite part is the clean finish to it because it's like even though it cut it catches you off guard when you with the smell and like the initial taste, it's like it disappears so quick that I'm like, I kind of want another sip.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: It's growing on me.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: The more I sit here, it is growing on me.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I don't like dessert.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: You want another price.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, need another cookie, need another piece of cake.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Uh honestly, though, as I sit here, it's growing on me.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know if I I would buy this, but if somebody gave me one, I I would absolutely drink a can of this, I feel like.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Are there beers you wouldn't drink?
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Not many.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm not saying I would I mean you're not wrong, but all right, into the the pubs and such.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: The big one.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, the D link.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Where in DD would you find this beer?
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: I think that they're sourcing their pistachios from Anurock, somewhere over there, past the Great Cloak Hills, and the past the Marshall of Jalimber.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: And likely they don't want to transport it too far, and by too far I mean like more than 500 miles, but uh actual scale of this map.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Uh but hardbuckler has some of this pistachio ale, uh, and they have it at the hypnotic stallion lounge in hardbuckler.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: The hypnotic stallion lounge.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Wow, that is great.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Ross, where are you seeing this one?
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, I can't so I think this one that I I ran with the angel food taste of this.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So I think uh you've you would find this at Fort Morning Lord, which is between Baldur's Gate and El Terrell.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is homebrew.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: This is uh Sir Sir Eric Hallwin.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: This is this is what he's brewing in the back room for those Saturday nights when they're not on patrol.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, and he calls this Angel Eyes because of the cakey nuttiness to it.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: So I went with something kind of similar.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Um, I went with a dessert shop in Neverwinter.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: So uh a small little like bistro-y dessert bar in Neverwinter in the bustling hub of Neverwinter, um, run by Betty out of that shop, is running this cake shop with a whole bunch of desserts and special treats, and on the side she just makes this in the back.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, but the name of her um cake shop is Betty's Sweet Spot.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: And that was brought to you by AI.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I I had some AI help on that one, but it was too good to pass up.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: I have questions.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, oh, I bet you.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: We can't answer those on air.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Do you do you have to ask to find Betty's sweet spot?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: No.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: She is very upfront and tra upfront with it.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: She lets you know.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Everybody knows where it's at.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: That was amazing.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Uh back to Dick.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: This is why you listen to us, folks.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: This is amazing.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Well, it brings us to our last two points here for this episode, and I'm interested on this next point.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, take one more sip just to really uh decide where you land on the yay or nay scale.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: I'll go first.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: I I I'm gonna say yay.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: It at first, it was it, it's not like I said, it's not something that I would probably normally get, but the right moment, right time, I would drink this beer.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: If you like cream ales, sure.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: For me, no chance in hell am I buying this one.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Sorry, uh, this brewery, but it's not for me.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I if I if you like cream ales, I I think go for it, but I'm I'm passing.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: If you like pistachios, this is a yay.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: And for me, it is a yay.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: It's all you need.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: It's all about personal preference.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Now, CR-wise, I don't think we called this out, but this is only a 5% ABV beer.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: So if we you know talk about challenge rating with how we did it last time we did an opening crack, this is gonna fall pretty far down the list.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: I think even last time we we talked about the scale, I think we called cream eles out and put them at a CR1.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: But we don't always just have to equate it to the style of beer, it could also be drinkability.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: But I think for me, that's a pretty easy drink.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's probably CR1.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: It's about that easy.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Uh you know what?
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: We'll go with the two.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: I would like to do it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: It's not like drinking a lager.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: I would say like a four.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Like it's got a little bit of a like a what at the beginning of it that you kind of gotta like prepare for mentally as you go into it.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, I do.
- 10:19unknown: Sure.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm I'm actually gonna go a little bit higher than you guys.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: I think if we're talking like standard beers, cream ale's being a one, I think this is just different enough and it's still crafty enough that to me it's it's in that six to eight range.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: We'll we'll just say a seven.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: We'll split the difference and say a seven.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Because if you're not a typical craft beer drinker, I don't think you're gonna be able to dive into it.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's fair, Ross.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: I that's I'm I'm gonna change my number based on that too.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: If you don't love craft beers, this is not like a CR1, CR2 for you.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: It would be like a CR6.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: It is a not nickel.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: It does have a strong flavor profile.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: It's not necessarily a heavy beer or anything like that.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: It's easy to drink, but it definitely has a specific flavor.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I I mean, if you don't like craft beer because of like hoppiness, because you sure craft beers tend to be a little hoppier, you will probably be okay with this beer.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, give it a try.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying it's higher just because that general flavor.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: It is if you're a coors drinker and you're walking in, you're probably not gonna like this.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: But I'm cool with it.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: So uh you can check out if you want to find more about uh Millstream Brewing Company's beers, you can check them out at millstreambrewing.com.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Again, they are in Amana, Iowa.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: So for two weeks in a row, we've talked about an Iowa beer.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Not next time.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Iowa.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: You had your day.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: That's gonna do it for this bonus episode.
