- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your guide to
- 0:04Speaker 1: the whitetail woods, presented by First Light, creating proven versatile
- 0:09Speaker 1: hunting apparel for the stand, saddle or blind. First Light
- 0:13Speaker 1: Go Farther, stay Longer, and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. This week on
- 0:23Speaker 2: the show, I'm running Tyler Jones and ca C Smith
- 0:26Speaker 2: through our what would you do gauntlet, giving us insight
- 0:29Speaker 2: into exactly how they handle some of the most challenging
- 0:31Speaker 2: deer running scenarios. I could throw it all right, Welcome
- 0:40Speaker 2: to the wire to Hunt podcast, brought to you by
- 0:44Speaker 2: First Light. If you're not aware, first Let's got a
- 0:47Speaker 2: pretty cool program called Camo for Conservation, in which they
- 0:51Speaker 2: donate a portion of proceeds from the sale of every
- 0:54Speaker 2: single one of their specter whitetail camel product back to
- 0:58Speaker 2: the National Deer Association to help that great organization continue
- 1:02Speaker 2: the work they're doing to fight for deer and deer hunters,
- 1:05Speaker 2: both on private land public land. Whatever kind of deer
- 1:08Speaker 2: hunter you are, the NDA is working for you, and
- 1:12Speaker 2: First Light is helping them do that. So I'm a
- 1:15Speaker 2: fan of that. That said, today we are continuing are
- 1:18Speaker 2: what would you do Gauntlet series in which we're running
- 1:21Speaker 2: our guests through a bunch of different hypothetical deer hunting
- 1:25Speaker 2: scenarios to see what they would do and why they
- 1:27Speaker 2: would do it, how they'd handle these challenging deer hunting
- 1:30Speaker 2: situations and the thought process that would lead them to
- 1:34Speaker 2: a good decision. And today's guests are folks who hopefully
- 1:38Speaker 2: you are familiar with. We've got Tyler Jones and k C. Smith.
- 1:42Speaker 2: They're the hosts of the Element YouTube channel, the Buck
- 1:46Speaker 2: Truck series over on our media or YouTube channel, and
- 1:50Speaker 2: as of last year, hosts of our Fresh Radio mini series,
- 1:55Speaker 2: so hopefully you're listening to that. Each hunting season, we
- 1:58Speaker 2: get weekly updates from the field, and Casey and Tyler
- 2:01Speaker 2: are helping us do that here. This coming season again
- 2:04Speaker 2: can be getting updates and reports from deer hunters all
- 2:07Speaker 2: over the country. So that's what you have to look
- 2:09Speaker 2: forward to starting in September. But today they have a
- 2:13Speaker 2: good time with me as we talk through some interesting hunting,
- 2:18Speaker 2: you know situations. That's the game plan, talking to Casey
- 2:22Speaker 2: and Tyler talking deer, getting everything from public land advice
- 2:26Speaker 2: to you know, things related to every phase of the season.
- 2:30Speaker 2: We talk the rut we talked early season. We talk
- 2:32Speaker 2: how to deal with adversity. We even talk about using bait,
- 2:36Speaker 2: which is the thing they've done here and there, as
- 2:38Speaker 2: well as chasing big deer on totally DIY public land
- 2:42Speaker 2: spots and brand new territories. So I think there's gonna
- 2:45Speaker 2: be a little bit something here for everyone. I thoroughly
- 2:48Speaker 2: enjoyed this one. They are their fun crew and very
- 2:53Speaker 2: very good deer hunters. If you've not seen their hunts
- 2:56Speaker 2: over on YouTube, whether it be on the Mediator channel
- 2:58Speaker 2: or their channel, you should because they get it done
- 3:03Speaker 2: in a wide array of situations and they've got a
- 3:06Speaker 2: lot to share that we can all learn from. So,
- 3:09Speaker 2: without any further ado, let's get into our latest episode
- 3:13Speaker 2: from our what would You Do? Series with Tyler Jones
- 3:16Speaker 2: and Casey Smith of The Element. The Gauntlet's gonna begin
- 3:28Speaker 2: in Michigan, Okay, my home state of Michigan. Because you
- 3:32Speaker 2: guys came up a while back and you did your
- 3:35Speaker 2: whole scouting series, right, you guys did some scouting and
- 3:39Speaker 2: check some stuff out, So I want to imagine, I
- 3:43Speaker 2: want us to imagine if you guys were to take
- 3:45Speaker 2: that a step further. So Let's say you had to
- 3:48Speaker 2: come back up here to my home state and you
- 3:51Speaker 2: were gonna hunt, and we'll say it's going to be
- 3:54Speaker 2: an October hunt. What I'm curious is if we stuck
- 3:58Speaker 2: you back in that same area you checked out. Without
- 4:00Speaker 2: giving out too much details, I think it was somewhere
- 4:02Speaker 2: in the southern half of the state, kind of agriculture country,
- 4:05Speaker 2: mixed habitat. If you were going to show up at
- 4:08Speaker 2: that piece of public land or something similar in Michigan,
- 4:11Speaker 2: you've got one week to hunt in October. You're on
- 4:14Speaker 2: your buck truck season two or whatever you know you're
- 4:16Speaker 2: gonna your season is gonna be. How would you go
- 4:19Speaker 2: about scouting and learning that property leading into the hunt,
- 4:24Speaker 2: And what would the first day of that hunt look like?
- 4:28Speaker 3: Given all that, did we get to choose any uh?
- 4:32Speaker 3: Seven week stretch in October? Is that what you're giving us?
- 4:35Speaker 3: The option to day seven day?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah? No, I'm giving you. Well, in my head, I
- 4:41Speaker 2: was thinking the first week of October. But I'll let
- 4:42Speaker 2: you pick your week. I'll let you pick if you want.
- 4:44Speaker 2: If you don't want the first.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Week, Uh, are you going? I would say I would
- 4:51Speaker 3: pick the first week.
- 4:53Speaker 4: I think so that helps, I'll go ahead and kind
- 4:58Speaker 4: of play that through.
- 4:59Speaker 3: I am.
- 5:00Speaker 4: I'm a lot different than a lot of people in
- 5:02Speaker 4: that I like mornings in October because I'm not hunting
- 5:07Speaker 4: field edges like I love to hunt bed to feed,
- 5:11Speaker 4: where in that case it's feed to bed in the morning,
- 5:14Speaker 4: especially if you have good access. If you're like, say
- 5:16Speaker 4: you're hunting a public piece that's pretty good size and
- 5:20Speaker 4: it's got varied habitat, and you maybe can go do
- 5:24Speaker 4: some scouting in the evening before and see, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 4: deer hitting an agfield where whether it's you know, alfalfa, standing.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Corn or whatever. Maybe and maybe maybe it's a bird
- 5:35Speaker 3: feeder you know in some of these places or whatever.
- 5:39Speaker 4: I like the concept of going in early in the
- 5:42Speaker 4: morning and getting way back into something and coming from
- 5:45Speaker 4: the different direction than where the deer are, and that's
- 5:48Speaker 4: pretty consistent early in the year.
- 5:51Speaker 3: So that first week of October works really good for that.
- 5:55Speaker 4: And you know, I guess to go a little deeper
- 5:58Speaker 4: into that, I think you'd probably want to pair that
- 6:01Speaker 4: with some natural browse stuff.
- 6:04Speaker 3: When's the first frost date in southern Michigan.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Mm hm, you know, somewhere in that first couple of
- 6:12Speaker 2: weeks of October, I would guess most years.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Okay, so that's gonna probably make a difference on what
- 6:18Speaker 4: the what you're doing. If you don't have a frost
- 6:20Speaker 4: date yet in early October, then there's a lot more
- 6:25Speaker 4: of that forbe stuff that's still available deer. But say
- 6:28Speaker 4: you do get an early frost, I'm sure, well I'll
- 6:32Speaker 4: pronounce it correctly for Michigan and ers, but acorns will
- 6:35Speaker 4: be potentially a thing at that point in the year,
- 6:39Speaker 4: right so, and it might be like some early dropping
- 6:42Speaker 4: reds or something like that. If you pair that with
- 6:45Speaker 4: close proximity to some thicket betting maybe across a marsh
- 6:50Speaker 4: or something like that from an agriculture food source, I
- 6:53Speaker 4: feel pretty good about early October, you know that. And
- 6:56Speaker 4: also Michigan has like a September tween opener or is
- 7:01Speaker 4: it always October.
- 7:02Speaker 3: One or what is it?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Oh is October one?
- 7:04Speaker 4: So again I think that that lends itself to some
- 7:08Speaker 4: really good hunting maybe on like October fourth, uh deep
- 7:13Speaker 4: in there where like I'm the opener, you could opener.
- 7:17Speaker 3: You can have you know a lot of pressure around
- 7:21Speaker 3: the first the.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Half mile radius near the roads, and if you go
- 7:25Speaker 4: back in there and just anticipate those deer getting bumped
- 7:27Speaker 4: into the deeper stuff and be there waiting on them.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Uh, it's a it's a pretty good process. I think,
- 7:33Speaker 3: what kind of scouting are you talking about? The East
- 7:35Speaker 3: East scouting or like the on foot stuff.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Well, I'm curious about both. So so I was gonna
- 7:41Speaker 2: ask case if if that means he would not do
- 7:43Speaker 2: any east scouting, would not do anything but the glass
- 7:46Speaker 2: the night before, or are you gonna do any of
- 7:50Speaker 2: those other things leading into those first hunts?
- 7:53Speaker 4: Uh? You you probably know my answer because you know me.
- 7:56Speaker 4: But I'm gonna he's got a ton on this stuff.
- 7:59Speaker 4: In fact way more, I don't like to stomp stuff
- 8:01Speaker 4: up if it's if it's within a couple of weeks
- 8:04Speaker 4: of when I'm gonna hunt, I just stay out of there.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I don't want to be in there messing around. And
- 8:09Speaker 4: I know that deer will recover from that stuff. And
- 8:12Speaker 4: you know, if you bump a buck once whatever, But
- 8:13Speaker 4: at the same time, you never know when that buck is.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Just a little bit weird about that stuff or I mean, it's.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Almost like a chaos theory type deal. You know, it's
- 8:22Speaker 4: like what if you just do the wrong one thing,
- 8:24Speaker 4: Like you don't know that that's a looking branch, but
- 8:26Speaker 4: you touch it and they freak out, you know. Like so
- 8:29Speaker 4: just you know, if you're say you show up a
- 8:32Speaker 4: couple of days early, I wouldn't even show up a
- 8:34Speaker 4: couple of days early. Probably I would just show up
- 8:37Speaker 4: a day early and have some very good eastcout preparation.
- 8:42Speaker 3: And in this sense, I would be looking for proximity
- 8:45Speaker 3: to roads.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I'd be using like that on X layer that shows
- 8:48Speaker 4: you crop rotation stuff. And the big thing in Michigan,
- 8:52Speaker 4: it seems is you can see deer trails from the
- 8:55Speaker 4: area pretty often crossing those swamps. In fact, that's one
- 8:58Speaker 4: of the things we used on scouting series was beer
- 9:01Speaker 4: trails to.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Uh, you know, Betting Islands, and uh.
- 9:05Speaker 4: It seemed to be pretty productive. And I would so, yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 4: it's super heavy scout. Uh, probably a lot of truck
- 9:11Speaker 4: scouting driving around. I mean, if you can see a deer,
- 9:13Speaker 4: that makes me feel way more confident. I mean, even
- 9:17Speaker 4: if it's a small buck at that point in the year,
- 9:19Speaker 4: you know, like there's still a chance that he's in
- 9:23Speaker 4: pretty close proximity to his buddy.
- 9:26Speaker 3: He was hanging out with this summer, and I mean
- 9:28Speaker 3: shoot man in Michigan.
- 9:29Speaker 4: They're all shooters, right, so, uh, he's small danger according
- 9:35Speaker 4: to your boys, they say small ones.
- 9:37Speaker 3: They're right.
- 9:40Speaker 2: What would you what would you do, Tyler? Would you
- 9:43Speaker 2: take the same approach?
- 9:45Speaker 3: Yeah? Pretty similar? We you know, he and I spend
- 9:47Speaker 3: a lot of.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Time uh together, and we are on a podcast every
- 9:52Speaker 5: week on our podcast, and so we talk about this
- 9:55Speaker 5: stuff a lot. So we tend to we tend to
- 9:58Speaker 5: agree with a lot uh and have a lot of
- 10:00Speaker 5: similarities in this. I'd probably add, like, I'm looking at
- 10:03Speaker 5: that pen right now, where.
- 10:04Speaker 3: That camera was, and.
- 10:08Speaker 5: I would I would definitely try to hypothesize the betting
- 10:12Speaker 5: a little bit because I think, if I remember correctly,
- 10:16Speaker 5: one of the bigger bucks was a night photo, and
- 10:19Speaker 5: so I definitely like those are useful to me if
- 10:24Speaker 5: they're if they're close, if they're close to the you know,
- 10:27Speaker 5: close to daylight or close to shooting time, So those
- 10:29Speaker 5: are those are fairly useful, even if they're within a
- 10:31Speaker 5: couple of hours. Sometimes I feel like you can assume
- 10:35Speaker 5: betting sometimes based off of that, especially in more open country,
- 10:38Speaker 5: which just isn't. But I think another thing I would
- 10:42Speaker 5: key in on that time of year, I would imagine
- 10:44Speaker 5: most of the corn is still in, is that correct
- 10:46Speaker 5: up there and around the first week of October, ye,
- 10:49Speaker 5: So I would try to stay away from corn. I
- 10:51Speaker 5: think there looks like there's a lot of alfalfa in
- 10:53Speaker 5: the area, and I would I would hunt that just because.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Corn that's in just makes things so difficult.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Man like you, just because your whole bed to feed
- 11:02Speaker 5: pattern gets thrown off in a situation like that. So
- 11:05Speaker 5: I don't like that because really, I mean, you can
- 11:09Speaker 5: hunt the edge of the corn and.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Kind of play both sides of the coin.
- 11:13Speaker 5: There, but you're just you don't know where to blow
- 11:16Speaker 5: your wind and all that. So I probably would just
- 11:18Speaker 5: stay away from corn that time of year, try to
- 11:20Speaker 5: be into either beans or out faluta.
- 11:24Speaker 2: So this brings up a larger question that I've kind
- 11:26Speaker 2: of wrestled with over the years when it comes to
- 11:28Speaker 2: my approach to new places that I'm just showing up
- 11:31Speaker 2: and hunting. I've historically always taken a similar approach to
- 11:36Speaker 2: you guys, in which I would east out a bunch
- 11:38Speaker 2: and then show up and be conservative, you know, not
- 11:41Speaker 2: want to trump all over the place, and kind of
- 11:43Speaker 2: work my way and based on what I'm seeing. But
- 11:46Speaker 2: I've had a few times where I have you know,
- 11:49Speaker 2: missed the boat in a situation where I didn't find
- 11:53Speaker 2: the key place until at the very end, and where
- 11:55Speaker 2: I'm thinking, man, if I just taken half a day
- 11:58Speaker 2: or the first day and like burned through a bunch
- 12:00Speaker 2: more stuff and actually saw this stuff, I could have
- 12:02Speaker 2: figured it out much more quickly and probably still could
- 12:05Speaker 2: have got away with it. So I've sometimes debated this
- 12:07Speaker 2: in my own mind. Is there any situation anytime of
- 12:11Speaker 2: the year in which you would do something like that,
- 12:13Speaker 2: like take day one or half a day and actually
- 12:15Speaker 2: like pound the ground or is it always going to
- 12:19Speaker 2: be what you just described for a showing up to
- 12:22Speaker 2: a relatively new place and learning as you go.
- 12:26Speaker 5: My e scouting would determine that more we it's so
- 12:32Speaker 5: hot textas we just e scout all summer everything that
- 12:34Speaker 5: we're kind of looking forward to going and seeing.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 12:37Speaker 5: And so I'll have I usually have kind of some
- 12:41Speaker 5: some methods that I use. I'm not super detailed, but
- 12:43Speaker 5: I do have like some organization on X that I
- 12:46Speaker 5: use that helps me to determine kind of So what
- 12:49Speaker 5: I'll kind of do is just like shotgun everything in
- 12:52Speaker 5: the area that I think is pretty good, and I
- 12:55Speaker 5: usually am probably a little bit more particular and dial
- 12:59Speaker 5: dialed in on that stuff in case he is. But
- 13:02Speaker 5: his method pays off a lot on playing BCD and
- 13:05Speaker 5: all that. You know, it's it's it helps us out.
- 13:07Speaker 5: But I'll, like I won't have probably as many pens
- 13:09Speaker 5: as him, but I'll put a bunch out there, and
- 13:11Speaker 5: then I'll go through and continue to look at those
- 13:14Speaker 5: throughout the summer some and end up like I all
- 13:17Speaker 5: kind of blue ribbon a lot of my like really
- 13:20Speaker 5: spots that I think are just awesome, and those are
- 13:22Speaker 5: spots that, like, I'll probably end up hunting those those areas,
- 13:29Speaker 5: and I'll probably end up observing.
- 13:31Speaker 3: A lot of times first in those areas.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Man, I like to be able to hunt even if
- 13:37Speaker 5: I am observing, so like it's not just purely an
- 13:40Speaker 5: observation set. Sometimes I just sit where my wind is
- 13:42Speaker 5: pretty full proof or something like that, you know, or
- 13:45Speaker 5: my access is really good, and then kind of see
- 13:47Speaker 5: and then also just be ready. But I think that
- 13:51Speaker 5: would determine kind of how I approach that is, like
- 13:54Speaker 5: if I go to an area and I've got one
- 13:56Speaker 5: good spot or two good spots say that I really like,
- 13:59Speaker 5: like I can tell from the aerial that that is
- 14:02Speaker 5: going to be a spot that I will more than
- 14:04Speaker 5: likely build an encounter buck. Then say the wind is
- 14:07Speaker 5: bad for it for both those spots, then that's where
- 14:11Speaker 5: I'll go, and I may stomp something up or really
- 14:13Speaker 5: get a little more aggressive and try to get my
- 14:15Speaker 5: glass on deer that are running out of the bottom
- 14:18Speaker 5: or something like that, and then I'll go back over
- 14:20Speaker 5: those spots when the wind is right. I In fact,
- 14:22Speaker 5: in South Dakota twenty twenty, it took six days before
- 14:27Speaker 5: we had a wind that we could hunt deer that
- 14:30Speaker 5: we're moving on a bed defeat pattern in one spy,
- 14:32Speaker 5: And when we finally got the wind we needed on
- 14:34Speaker 5: that sixth day, we went in there the first time
- 14:36Speaker 5: and we both shot.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Bucks that even on that same spot, probably a couple
- 14:40Speaker 3: hundred yards from each other.
- 14:41Speaker 4: You know, you bring up a good point about if
- 14:44Speaker 4: I am going to stomp something up, I don't know
- 14:46Speaker 4: if it's the time of a year as much as
- 14:48Speaker 4: it is it's a low risk, high reward top place.
- 14:53Speaker 3: So like I usually categorize my stuff like a through.
- 14:57Speaker 4: F as far as like places to bounce and go
- 15:00Speaker 4: in thoughts and the like, uh, if my really you know,
- 15:04Speaker 4: top three places don't work for some reason, one of
- 15:07Speaker 4: those bottom places I'll go stomp up because I'm like,
- 15:12Speaker 4: I probably won't make it here on the week anyways.
- 15:14Speaker 4: But what if I go in here and just find
- 15:16Speaker 4: the thing that's like, oh this I was this was
- 15:18Speaker 4: severely overlooked.
- 15:19Speaker 3: By me, and I you know, I have missed the
- 15:21Speaker 3: boat big time on this.
- 15:22Speaker 4: So that's probably one situation where I might stomp something.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Was like, I probably won't make it there, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 4: so let's go in there and do a quick run
- 15:30Speaker 4: and maybe there's something to learn from that.
- 15:32Speaker 5: I would say that the rut, though, is the time
- 15:34Speaker 5: that we're pretty aggressive on this stuff. Sometimes it's like,
- 15:37Speaker 5: you know, just you know, it's more forgiving. The spot
- 15:40Speaker 5: is because deer maybe three miles from there.
- 15:42Speaker 3: The next day.
- 15:42Speaker 4: You're almost not stomping it up though, You're almost just
- 15:44Speaker 4: like blasting in there hunting anything.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Weird things can happen.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Yeah, So uh, another time that I might do just
- 15:52Speaker 4: stomp it up thing is if I'm in an area
- 15:55Speaker 4: let's say, so we're still going with this Southern Michigan scenario.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Let's say, and I don't.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Know the state well, but maybe there's a big chunk.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Of state forest or something that doesn't have much agriculture around,
- 16:09Speaker 4: and it's the right time of year for those year
- 16:11Speaker 4: to be hitting some falling masts. That would be the
- 16:14Speaker 4: time when it's like I'm gonna go in there and
- 16:16Speaker 4: just stomp until I find the thing and and hunted.
- 16:20Speaker 3: But all that said, I never have done that with success.
- 16:23Speaker 4: So but it's still just because I haven't had success
- 16:26Speaker 4: doing something doesn't mean I wouldn't try it again, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 4: because I think it could work.
- 16:32Speaker 2: See, you guys brought up something that I want to
- 16:34Speaker 2: get a little more clarity on. Again. It's another one
- 16:37Speaker 2: of those things I always find myself debating on these
- 16:39Speaker 2: traveling hunts. You go into a lot of these hunts
- 16:42Speaker 2: with a bunch of different options, right play ABC and
- 16:44Speaker 2: maybe let's say maybe like A B and C you
- 16:46Speaker 2: feel pretty good about and you've got like a lot
- 16:48Speaker 2: of sound reasons why you think that'll work, why you
- 16:51Speaker 2: like it a lot, and then you get to your
- 16:53Speaker 2: de FG's or whatever, and now you're kind of you know,
- 16:55Speaker 2: these are I don't know, you can give it a
- 16:57Speaker 2: shot if you have to, maybe how much time do
- 17:02Speaker 2: you invest Let's say you have a seven day hunt.
- 17:05Speaker 2: We'll just take for an average, how much time will
- 17:08Speaker 2: you give to your spots you really really like your
- 17:11Speaker 2: ABU c's whatever that is before you pull the plug
- 17:14Speaker 2: and they're like, man, we really got to try some
- 17:16Speaker 2: crazy stuff because this just isn't working. I know some
- 17:19Speaker 2: guy I talked to someone recently who likes to give
- 17:22Speaker 2: like a three day rule to his best spots, Like
- 17:24Speaker 2: he'll give them three good sits, you know, to give
- 17:26Speaker 2: them a chance to work out the random days where
- 17:29Speaker 2: they're just not there. I've seen you guys, you know,
- 17:33Speaker 2: sometimes stick it out in one area, but sometimes, you know,
- 17:35Speaker 2: bounce around quite a bit. What's what's your general take
- 17:38Speaker 2: about how long you'll focus on a spot because of
- 17:40Speaker 2: your confidence before you have to really start pivoting to
- 17:43Speaker 2: wildly different things. Like if you had three days in
- 17:46Speaker 2: your plan A or B and it's just like not happening,
- 17:49Speaker 2: or maybe four days and you're down to the last three,
- 17:52Speaker 2: are you really going crazy and finding brand new spots
- 17:55Speaker 2: or do you just trust?
- 18:00Speaker 3: Uh? I thought you gave me a little finger down
- 18:03Speaker 3: here to say that you had you you had a thing. Okay,
- 18:07Speaker 3: I can go what happened about breaking?
- 18:11Speaker 2: What's what's the finger thing?
- 18:15Speaker 4: I was like I thought I thought it was like
- 18:16Speaker 4: you're raising your hands, but you're raising your finger.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Weird how observing he is, but he doesn't like.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Okay, So I mark to answer your question. In most situations,
- 18:28Speaker 4: and if I do not see a deer, uh, I'm
- 18:33Speaker 4: bouncing after the first hip.
- 18:35Speaker 3: That's just It's just it, unless it's.
- 18:37Speaker 4: A rut hunt where it's like the raging rut and
- 18:40Speaker 4: you're in an area that deer cruise and you're liable
- 18:43Speaker 4: to pick up new deer from a neighbor or something.
- 18:46Speaker 4: So let's go back to the scenario here with the
- 18:49Speaker 4: first week of October in Michigan.
- 18:51Speaker 3: These these deer are probably on a pretty good pattern. Uh.
- 18:55Speaker 3: And the only thing that's changing that is hunter pressure.
- 18:59Speaker 3: So if I go to a place.
- 19:02Speaker 4: And I don't see deer or a good sign, man,
- 19:07Speaker 4: the clock's kicking in my head. Like I have a
- 19:09Speaker 4: real hard time. I mean, this week, I've talked about
- 19:13Speaker 4: this with gregular Day and probably you two, but like,
- 19:15Speaker 4: I can't think of a single time this past season
- 19:19Speaker 4: I hung in the same tree twice.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Now I might have been in the same area, but
- 19:23Speaker 3: I made some type of adjustment, you know, sixty yards
- 19:26Speaker 3: over here or whatever.
- 19:27Speaker 4: But I don't think I ever hung in the same
- 19:28Speaker 4: tree twice. So it depends on what you call spot
- 19:32Speaker 4: right now. If you call on like an eighty a spot,
- 19:34Speaker 4: I could probably find a way to give that three days,
- 19:36Speaker 4: but I still wouldn't hang in the same tree.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm pretty similar.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I mean I gotta see, Like most of the time,
- 19:43Speaker 5: I gotta see if you're out of state on an
- 19:46Speaker 5: out of state trip, Like time is just of the essence,
- 19:48Speaker 5: and we're just I mean, we spend a lot of
- 19:50Speaker 5: times truck scouting.
- 19:52Speaker 3: A lot of a lot of our time early in
- 19:54Speaker 3: a trip is truck scouting.
- 19:55Speaker 5: So just trying to learn, like what crops are around
- 19:59Speaker 5: and what you know, if there's deer moving to them,
- 20:02Speaker 5: if we can find trails, even we'll drive, you know,
- 20:05Speaker 5: like if we don't have a great play, we'll drive
- 20:07Speaker 5: during Golden hour, you know, just trying to see what
- 20:11Speaker 5: deer are moving around the area early on and learning
- 20:14Speaker 5: that way.
- 20:15Speaker 3: And I'm the same way.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Like in South Dakota on that buck Truck episode, that
- 20:20Speaker 5: that spot that I ended up shooting that deer in Basically,
- 20:25Speaker 5: we showed up a day before the season, right and
- 20:27Speaker 5: then and we scouted and everything that we had learned
- 20:30Speaker 5: the year before in that place was.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Pretty much just dead.
- 20:34Speaker 5: And so I mean I I basically relocated pretty far
- 20:39Speaker 5: away and found bucks. This was one of my This
- 20:42Speaker 5: is one of my spots that I thought was really
- 20:44Speaker 5: good that I had scouted on on X and.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Went and found that spot and found deer bedding in there.
- 20:51Speaker 2: So you phone deer in there, and I think, if
- 20:53Speaker 2: I remember it, you glass bucks the evening prior, then
- 20:56Speaker 2: you went back the next morning, glassed some more in
- 20:58Speaker 2: the morning, and then made play to hunt them that
- 21:01Speaker 2: following evening. So two nights of glassing and then set
- 21:04Speaker 2: up to kill the fallow evening. Right.
- 21:06Speaker 5: Yeah, So I was really I was really torn between
- 21:12Speaker 5: They were moving kind of north and south, and I
- 21:13Speaker 5: had two spots I could kind of hunt them on
- 21:16Speaker 5: that were would be more lateral east and west. Thinking
- 21:20Speaker 5: about it on this property, and I basically couldn't really
- 21:24Speaker 5: pick which one. So I decided to hunt from the ground,
- 21:26Speaker 5: be mobile and just glass and see what came by me,
- 21:30Speaker 5: and ended up kind of glassing from distance, but I
- 21:32Speaker 5: thought they would actually come up my way, and so anyway,
- 21:36Speaker 5: I just I had a different win the next morning,
- 21:39Speaker 5: but I wanted to get a better look at the
- 21:40Speaker 5: area I was hoping to find water, and I didn't
- 21:43Speaker 5: actually wasn't able to see, but the buck I thought,
- 21:47Speaker 5: the buck that I saw the night before, I thought
- 21:48Speaker 5: was going to water, and so.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I tried to get up high and see from a
- 21:53Speaker 3: different angle. That next morning.
- 21:54Speaker 5: I couldn't see the water, but I found a buck
- 21:56Speaker 5: bedded and I just, I mean, I just had a
- 21:58Speaker 5: really good feeling he was gonna come the tree on
- 22:01Speaker 5: the east. So I got in that one and he
- 22:03Speaker 5: was like ten yards, I mean, he's super close.
- 22:06Speaker 2: So now, how did you know there was water where
- 22:10Speaker 2: you ended up going in the evening? Did you know
- 22:12Speaker 2: that from the previous year or did you just scout
- 22:14Speaker 2: your way in and found that, like, oh, here's the
- 22:15Speaker 2: water I was hoping would be here.
- 22:17Speaker 5: There was a there was a drawl in the bottom,
- 22:20Speaker 5: and I could I was using Tobo lines on on
- 22:23Speaker 5: X to kind of see, well, it's lower right in there,
- 22:27Speaker 5: and this buck was heading kind of opposite of where
- 22:31Speaker 5: I thought he would destinate us for food.
- 22:33Speaker 3: And and so I was like, the.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Only reason I think he would do that is because
- 22:38Speaker 5: there would be water there, and he kind of dropped
- 22:40Speaker 5: down into the creek, and uh that was I also
- 22:44Speaker 5: had seen a spike go kind of from a different
- 22:46Speaker 5: direction in that same area and come out, and I
- 22:48Speaker 5: didn't know if he was you know, what he was doing.
- 22:51Speaker 3: So I just it was a big assumption, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 3: But it ended up.
- 22:54Speaker 5: The tree I sat in was when we got there,
- 22:57Speaker 5: the hole was there, and it was like it was
- 22:59Speaker 5: like may be ten yards long by five yards wide,
- 23:02Speaker 5: just a water hole in the bottom of the creek
- 23:04Speaker 5: that it was just a deep spot, you know, hole
- 23:05Speaker 5: in the creek and it was the only place holding.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Water right there.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Primo.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it was awesome. I mean it played out just right.
- 23:13Speaker 3: I was. I was pretty excited for that hunt.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that was That was one of those hunts that
- 23:19Speaker 2: really made you look smart until you weren't.
- 23:24Speaker 5: But yeah, yeah, to talk about the end of the.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Story, yeah, but no, one all serious. I remember when
- 23:32Speaker 2: that all worked out and that buck came, I was like, man,
- 23:34Speaker 2: that's like the best feeling in the world for Tyler.
- 23:36Speaker 2: But when you you know, glass them a couple of
- 23:38Speaker 2: times and then like really think through like how do
- 23:40Speaker 2: you make this move? How do you make that play?
- 23:42Speaker 2: And then for it to work out like perfect like
- 23:44Speaker 2: that that's a good feeling.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Yeah, it is, man, And a lot of times that
- 23:49Speaker 5: comes through that like map work still while you're sitting there,
- 23:51Speaker 5: you know, you really I've been like two hours dialing
- 23:54Speaker 5: all the spots making sure I had the trees right
- 23:57Speaker 5: and where I thought that that bucket bedded and everything.
- 24:00Speaker 5: So I think that's important to you. Don't just want
- 24:02Speaker 5: to be like, oh, there's a buck bet and I'm
- 24:03Speaker 5: gonna go over there and kill them, you know, so
- 24:05Speaker 5: you just make sure that it's done right. Because the
- 24:07Speaker 5: wind was kind of shady too. So yeah, it's it's fun,
- 24:12Speaker 5: Like that's the one that gets fun man.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. Uh yeah, what do you got?
- 24:29Speaker 3: So?
- 24:29Speaker 4: I know this is where you interview us and I
- 24:32Speaker 4: appreciate that, But since Michigan is your home state and
- 24:36Speaker 4: you have done all this, I would like to know
- 24:39Speaker 4: can you just kind of give the third person perspective
- 24:42Speaker 4: on what we said.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Well, I mean, the thing that's unique for me from
- 24:46Speaker 2: what your situation would be is like you would be
- 24:49Speaker 2: hunting on a short term time period in a brand
- 24:52Speaker 2: new place, you know, in my case being local, I
- 24:56Speaker 2: would just approach it very differently. But I guess like
- 24:58Speaker 2: if I were to be in your use, and if
- 25:00Speaker 2: I were traveling up here, and if I were going
- 25:02Speaker 2: to try to scout and figure out something new in
- 25:04Speaker 2: southern Michigan, I would do something pretty similar to what
- 25:08Speaker 2: you said. I would have a lot of east scouting done,
- 25:11Speaker 2: and then I would show up in that night before,
- 25:13Speaker 2: for sure, i'd be doing truck scouting. I'd be driving
- 25:16Speaker 2: around trying to confirm what's the food? Is it what
- 25:18Speaker 2: I thought it was gonna be? Where's the food? Can
- 25:19Speaker 2: I see any place that there are some deer, you know,
- 25:22Speaker 2: coming out and feeding in daylight? Something like that? The
- 25:26Speaker 2: next morning, I probably wouldn't hunt the first morning, I think,
- 25:30Speaker 2: you know, unless unless I just saw like a slam
- 25:32Speaker 2: dunk where I saw like a buck the night before,
- 25:35Speaker 2: and I felt like very confident for some reason with
- 25:37Speaker 2: where he was bed, I probably would truck scout again
- 25:40Speaker 2: in the morning, both to see if I could catch
- 25:44Speaker 2: anything going back in, and then more importantly though, see
- 25:47Speaker 2: where the hunters were. I'd really want to see what
- 25:49Speaker 2: parking lots have got guys and what parking lots don't
- 25:53Speaker 2: because I think, you know, finding those pockets where there's
- 25:55Speaker 2: not hunting pressure yet will really make a big difference,
- 25:57Speaker 2: especially in Michigan on an opening day when there's like literally
- 26:00Speaker 2: half a million or more hunters going out, maybe not
- 26:04Speaker 2: quite that, but right in that ballpark, and then you know, midday,
- 26:09Speaker 2: I would were late morning even I would probably do
- 26:11Speaker 2: my like slow scout my way into a location to
- 26:14Speaker 2: hunt for that evening. And the only thing I would
- 26:17Speaker 2: add to what you said would just be, especially with
- 26:21Speaker 2: the public land in most places in Michigan that I
- 26:24Speaker 2: have seen scouted or hunted, water is like the secret
- 26:29Speaker 2: weapon to getting away from people more often than not,
- 26:32Speaker 2: like anything that's super swampy, nasty or big bunch of
- 26:35Speaker 2: creeks and rivers and things like that, that's you know,
- 26:38Speaker 2: one of the only ways to get get away from
- 26:39Speaker 2: folks sometimes here. And so i'd really be keying in
- 26:43Speaker 2: on and you mentioned that a little bit, the swampy
- 26:45Speaker 2: spots where you can see like trails running through the
- 26:47Speaker 2: swamps and cattails and stuff. I'd be looking for that,
- 26:51Speaker 2: but just really keying in on, like what's the wettest
- 26:54Speaker 2: gnarliest stuff that I wouldn't want to go to, and
- 26:57Speaker 2: if that could coincide or be near to where I
- 26:59Speaker 2: also saw some deer feeding in a you know, a
- 27:01Speaker 2: pocket of green bean still or something like that, that
- 27:04Speaker 2: would be you know, something that make me feel really
- 27:07Speaker 2: good about it.
- 27:08Speaker 3: So that would be all high level. The first week
- 27:11Speaker 3: of November, I mean October.
- 27:13Speaker 2: If I were going to pick a week in October
- 27:16Speaker 2: for a traveling hunt, I don't think i'd pick the
- 27:19Speaker 2: first week in October. In a Michigan I would take
- 27:21Speaker 2: the last week in October's, yeah, but but the first
- 27:25Speaker 2: would be like my second choice, so i'd be you know,
- 27:29Speaker 2: I would I really like, I really like the first
- 27:31Speaker 2: like two to three days of October here in the state.
- 27:34Speaker 2: But that's for like my local properties I know well,
- 27:37Speaker 2: but I know like the places I know, well, there's
- 27:41Speaker 2: gonna be a day or two window where you almost
- 27:44Speaker 2: almost every single year, and if hunt of different places,
- 27:47Speaker 2: but almost every single year for the last like twelve
- 27:50Speaker 2: years at least when hunting my opening day, you know,
- 27:53Speaker 2: hunt in Michigan, the first day or two, you'll have
- 27:55Speaker 2: an encounter with the target buck the first day or two,
- 27:58Speaker 2: but then it you know, things change really fast. Stuff
- 28:00Speaker 2: for that, so speaking opening day, very good segue, and
- 28:05Speaker 2: thank you Casey for leading me into this wonderful segue,
- 28:08Speaker 2: because I want to send you guys home. We're gonna
- 28:10Speaker 2: talk a lot about traveling, but I want to send
- 28:12Speaker 2: you guys back home to Texas for an opening day question.
- 28:15Speaker 2: And I don't know if you guys hunt Opening day
- 28:16Speaker 2: a lot in Texas or if you're traveling during that
- 28:18Speaker 2: time period, but let's just say this year, you're gonna
- 28:21Speaker 2: hunt Opening Day in Texas, so the archery opener, hunting
- 28:25Speaker 2: at home, and same thing. I would imagine that leading
- 28:29Speaker 2: into opening day, you don't have as much pressure. So
- 28:32Speaker 2: I'm guessing maybe Texas Bucks would act like Michigan Bucks
- 28:36Speaker 2: and be relatively active still that first day or two.
- 28:40Speaker 2: But correct me if I'm wrong. But let's imagine Opening
- 28:43Speaker 2: Day in Texas is coming poor conditions though, so you've
- 28:47Speaker 2: got like hotter than usual, so I know it's already
- 28:49Speaker 2: gonna be hot, but let's say, and maybe you guys
- 28:52Speaker 2: need to tell me what that has to be. Maybe
- 28:53Speaker 2: there's not too hot, but in my mind that's uh.
- 28:57Speaker 4: I mean, if I was gonna guess the high on
- 28:59Speaker 4: opening day is going to be between ninety three and
- 29:02Speaker 4: ninety eight.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Yeah, you did bring it up.
- 29:07Speaker 4: We do travel for opening I haven't made an opener
- 29:10Speaker 4: in five years and it kind of hurts my feelings.
- 29:12Speaker 4: But just because if you go a couple of states north,
- 29:15Speaker 4: it actually feels like you're deer hunting, you know.
- 29:19Speaker 3: But we can definitely play along with your scenario for sure.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Okay, yes, So so hearmor me on this one. Let's
- 29:25Speaker 2: imagine it's opening day in Texas and you have conditions
- 29:28Speaker 2: that are so bad that you worry that the dere
- 29:33Speaker 2: activity might be less than usual. So tell me what
- 29:37Speaker 2: that would have to be. And then secondly, do you
- 29:41Speaker 2: make a big swing on the opening evening or opening
- 29:44Speaker 2: day in Texas if you're hunting locally like I would
- 29:46Speaker 2: do in Michigan, like I go for a kill on
- 29:48Speaker 2: the first night because like that's usually a special day,
- 29:51Speaker 2: special day or two. So if you were local in
- 29:54Speaker 2: Texas during that time period, would you go for a
- 29:56Speaker 2: big swing and go for kill on the opener despite
- 29:59Speaker 2: this condition that are too hot? Or if not, how
- 30:04Speaker 2: would you approach that first day or two with those
- 30:07Speaker 2: super hot conditions? And what kind of setup would you
- 30:10Speaker 2: go for for that kind of hunt, and Tyler, I'm
- 30:14Speaker 2: going to figure you and you got to go, what
- 30:17Speaker 2: is this like a.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Public land deal or what where? We don't ask me
- 30:20Speaker 3: where are we hunting? Man?
- 30:22Speaker 2: You're hunting local at home. So you tell me you
- 30:24Speaker 2: can hunt your private stuff do you have access to
- 30:26Speaker 2: down there? Or you can hunt public?
- 30:27Speaker 3: Okay, wherever you would want to hunt, I would I
- 30:30Speaker 3: would be on private.
- 30:31Speaker 5: Uh it really, I'd probably be on private if I
- 30:34Speaker 5: had the choice anywhere, you know.
- 30:36Speaker 3: But the man like I almost cannot.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Come up with a scenario on October one or around
- 30:44Speaker 5: that day whenever we open that I would hunt it
- 30:48Speaker 5: on and feel good about. I mean, it's just like
- 30:50Speaker 5: I don't. I can't even water is not reliable. You know,
- 30:55Speaker 5: we don't have ag. We've got coastal Burguida pastures for
- 30:58Speaker 5: for for cattle.
- 31:01Speaker 4: So to me.
- 31:03Speaker 5: Uh in case, you may have a different idea here.
- 31:05Speaker 5: But as I'm thinking through this, like my property that
- 31:12Speaker 5: I hunt in particular that's private in in our area,
- 31:18Speaker 5: I would probably hope that we have a different wind
- 31:21Speaker 5: than the predominant wind we usually have, which is in southeast,
- 31:25Speaker 5: and so I would probably hope for a different win
- 31:28Speaker 5: than that. But if I get that southeast wind, which
- 31:30Speaker 5: is what I'm gonna get, if it's like ninety eight
- 31:32Speaker 5: degrees a little bit hotter than normal, and I'm going
- 31:37Speaker 5: to hunt in the in the northeast corner of this property,
- 31:43Speaker 5: on next to the woods, but on the edge by
- 31:46Speaker 5: the field, because what's gonna happen those deer there, Well,
- 31:50Speaker 5: as the sun goes down, they're going to come out
- 31:52Speaker 5: and their mosquitoes are gonna be kind of bad, probably,
- 31:55Speaker 5: and they're gonna try to find open areas that they
- 31:59Speaker 5: can get some reprieve and a little bit of breeze maybe,
- 32:02Speaker 5: and uh, they're gonna walk those edges and just kind
- 32:04Speaker 5: of browse around and find what they can find in
- 32:06Speaker 5: the back of those pastures or fields or whatever. Even
- 32:09Speaker 5: though there's it's not really an AX source, it's just
- 32:12Speaker 5: they're a creature of edge and they're gonna so I'm
- 32:16Speaker 5: gonna try to get them coming down. Basically, I'm hind
- 32:19Speaker 5: the northeast corner of the southeast wind, and I'm hoping
- 32:22Speaker 5: that they come out on.
- 32:22Speaker 3: This edge and work east towards me.
- 32:25Speaker 5: Uh, and my wind just kind of misses them, but
- 32:27Speaker 5: they feel good about going into a quarter two win
- 32:29Speaker 5: like that kind of that's my best my best answer there.
- 32:33Speaker 2: What's that field that they're going on to.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Well, normally, the like I said, most everything is coastal bermuda,
- 32:41Speaker 5: so it's just hay, you know, it's like, I mean,
- 32:43Speaker 5: the deer don't even I don't think they even eat
- 32:45Speaker 5: the bermuda in it. They eat other forbes that they
- 32:46Speaker 5: can find, they kind of grow within it. But for
- 32:49Speaker 5: for this particular field, I'll have I'll have a lot
- 32:53Speaker 5: of I mean, I don't know what they're exactly browsing,
- 32:56Speaker 5: but it's basically just wild. It's grown up, it's not
- 33:00Speaker 5: it used to be cattle pasture and now it's partridge
- 33:02Speaker 5: p and there's some golden rod, which they don't really eat. Texas,
- 33:07Speaker 5: We'll have some poke weed and stuff like that that
- 33:09Speaker 5: they'll neble on. I mean, uh, there'll be blackberries, not
- 33:14Speaker 5: the berries, but the bush. They'll eat a lot of that.
- 33:18Speaker 5: So yeah, it just kind of depends on what they
- 33:21Speaker 5: find out there.
- 33:22Speaker 3: There's a bunch of different things growing out in that
- 33:23Speaker 3: field though.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Case, so I'm gonna hunt private as well, and I'm
- 33:29Speaker 4: gonna hunt my property because Tyler is gonna be hunt
- 33:32Speaker 4: his but no, I had never asked.
- 33:34Speaker 3: He would if I asked him, and I don't. Uh.
- 33:37Speaker 4: So, my property actually sets up for south winds, which
- 33:42Speaker 4: is kind of our property is a little bit inverted in.
- 33:45Speaker 3: The way that they set up.
- 33:47Speaker 4: So for one, I would be running bait all summer,
- 33:51Speaker 4: which I'm doing right now. I've got corn on my property,
- 33:54Speaker 4: uh and so I've got a lot of bucks and
- 33:59Speaker 4: does coming in and hitting that bait. It's gonna be
- 34:03Speaker 4: pretty tough to hunt right over the bait. It's kind
- 34:07Speaker 4: of more of a thing to keep deer on the property.
- 34:10Speaker 4: So I would probably make sure that that is located
- 34:12Speaker 4: pretty central property and I can hunt. You're going to it,
- 34:16Speaker 4: And I would probably still choose in morning because.
- 34:22Speaker 3: It stays hot late in Texas that time of year.
- 34:24Speaker 4: But in the mornings you have a chance to have
- 34:27Speaker 4: a morning in the sixties, you know, like a sixty
- 34:29Speaker 4: nine or something like that. You know, more than likely
- 34:32Speaker 4: it's like a lowest seventy five or something, but that's
- 34:36Speaker 4: still way cooler. So you're gonna have a lot of
- 34:39Speaker 4: deer movement for an opening morning from sunrise till nine
- 34:44Speaker 4: ish o'clock and then it's gonna shut down for the
- 34:46Speaker 4: day until probably the last ten minutes of shooting lot,
- 34:49Speaker 4: which for me just it's real hard to go sweating
- 34:53Speaker 4: in a tree stand in the afternoon for four hours
- 34:55Speaker 4: waiting on that last ten minutes I'm sitting there. And
- 35:00Speaker 4: along with that, I'm gonna have a pre hung set
- 35:01Speaker 4: because I'm gonna swept my tail off if I go
- 35:04Speaker 4: in there and try to hang something. And if it's
- 35:07Speaker 4: on private, why wouldn't you, Especially if it's your own place,
- 35:09Speaker 4: you can go up there.
- 35:10Speaker 3: I mean even you can take the kids.
- 35:12Speaker 4: And that's another great thing about private on your own property.
- 35:14Speaker 4: The deer are a lot less sensitive to activity. So
- 35:17Speaker 4: you know earlier were talking about the stomp around thing.
- 35:20Speaker 4: I could go back there right now with a fifty
- 35:22Speaker 4: pounds bag bag of corn and put it out, and
- 35:25Speaker 4: there'll be a deer on there in twenty minutes, like
- 35:27Speaker 4: they hear me do it, you know, Like so they're
- 35:29Speaker 4: just a little bit more you know, comfortable with human intrusion. Now,
- 35:33Speaker 4: I wouldn't go back there and play music. There's a
- 35:36Speaker 4: bunch of people around here, yeah exactly. Yeah, So there's
- 35:38Speaker 4: people around stuff, and you can use that to your
- 35:40Speaker 4: advantage a little bit. Also, one of the things with
- 35:42Speaker 4: hunting in a morning, if you're hunting in a we
- 35:46Speaker 4: live rule, right, but it's it's not a neighborhood, but
- 35:49Speaker 4: there's houses around here and there people get up and
- 35:52Speaker 4: get stirren later in the mornings. Then they usually go
- 35:56Speaker 4: out in the evening and mother grass and make a
- 35:57Speaker 4: lot of noise, you know. So you also have that
- 36:00Speaker 4: aspect to it being more peaceful and that you're not
- 36:03Speaker 4: just being too disturbed.
- 36:04Speaker 3: So that's kind of my take on the opener.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Also have a I don't know, it's a real low
- 36:12Speaker 4: chance to shooting a buck, I think in general, so
- 36:15Speaker 4: it's probably an.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Opportunity to shoot a dough uh.
- 36:19Speaker 4: And I might be thinking about because you didn't restrict
- 36:20Speaker 4: us to hunting big target bucks, you know, in the conversation,
- 36:23Speaker 4: I might be thinking about getting that first year of
- 36:25Speaker 4: the year and just you know, having fun and shooting
- 36:28Speaker 4: something would probably be the first my primary concern out there.
- 36:33Speaker 2: So you bring up my next question though, when you
- 36:36Speaker 2: mentioned your whole plan casey, because you know, being the
- 36:40Speaker 2: Texas guys, you guys are stuck having to answer these
- 36:42Speaker 2: kinds of questions. Sorry, but if I told you that
- 36:45Speaker 2: this year you had to kill a mature buck over bait. Okay,
- 36:51Speaker 2: how would you do it? When would you do it?
- 36:53Speaker 2: Where would you do it?
- 36:55Speaker 4: When you say over bait, you don't mean eating it
- 36:58Speaker 4: like in his mouth? Right, but just like a deer
- 37:01Speaker 4: going to bait or like orienting to that.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Yes, yes, so I'll give you some flexibility, should win
- 37:09Speaker 2: and where?
- 37:09Speaker 3: Right?
- 37:10Speaker 2: Yeah? So I want to understand, like, yeah, give me
- 37:12Speaker 2: basically as full of a picture as you could if
- 37:15Speaker 2: you have, like that was the only stipulation that you
- 37:18Speaker 2: can kill, you gotta kill with chure buck, and bait
- 37:20Speaker 2: has to be like a central part of it. I
- 37:22Speaker 2: want to all the details of what you would need
- 37:25Speaker 2: to make that work.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Are you are you sticking us to our properties or
- 37:30Speaker 3: what do you.
- 37:31Speaker 2: You can you can go? You can tell me anywhere
- 37:33Speaker 2: you could use.
- 37:34Speaker 3: This okay to work with here?
- 37:37Speaker 4: Okay, anywhere in the I thought you meant Texas, So
- 37:40Speaker 4: anywhere that allows baiting.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so if you if you'd rather do it in
- 37:44Speaker 2: Kentucky or Ohio or somewhere else. But basically, what I'm
- 37:47Speaker 2: trying to get at here is, like you know, for
- 37:50Speaker 2: people that do use bait, how can they use it better. Like,
- 37:53Speaker 2: that's what the lesson I'm trying to take from this.
- 37:55Speaker 2: And I want you guys to paint me a picture
- 37:57Speaker 2: that will teach someone, you know, a better way to
- 37:59Speaker 2: do it.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Man.
- 38:01Speaker 4: I tell you I'm not gonna actually say a state
- 38:04Speaker 4: because it's a little bit hard to you know, put
- 38:08Speaker 4: too much of a spotlight on some places.
- 38:10Speaker 3: But let's just say like a Midwestern bait state.
- 38:13Speaker 4: I think that on November sixth, on an evening, if
- 38:17Speaker 4: you set up sixty or seventy yards down wind of
- 38:20Speaker 4: that bait, there is a really good shot that that
- 38:24Speaker 4: that a mature buck knows that those are going to
- 38:26Speaker 4: go to that bait.
- 38:27Speaker 3: And so like.
- 38:28Speaker 4: You, now, this has bitten me in the butt before,
- 38:32Speaker 4: but Martin, we still have you.
- 38:34Speaker 3: I lost your video. Okay, sorry, good. This has bit
- 38:39Speaker 3: me in the butt before.
- 38:40Speaker 4: Where I set up like fifty yards from a bay
- 38:42Speaker 4: pall and I had a giant come in and just eat,
- 38:45Speaker 4: you know, and I couldn't take the shot.
- 38:46Speaker 3: It was too Indian, too far.
- 38:49Speaker 4: But I think that your that's kind of the obscurity
- 38:54Speaker 4: and not the norm. I think that there's a real
- 38:56Speaker 4: good chance that you have those come in to eat
- 38:59Speaker 4: the bait and big bucks will be sent checking those does.
- 39:03Speaker 3: And if you can concentrate them with bait, that's the
- 39:05Speaker 3: way to do it.
- 39:07Speaker 5: I would probably say that my key number one tip
- 39:13Speaker 5: for getting a mature buck killed over bait.
- 39:16Speaker 3: It's it's very very similar in my way of doing it.
- 39:19Speaker 5: Probably the casey but and he would do this too,
- 39:22Speaker 5: but just maybe failed to mention. Hand feeding is like
- 39:26Speaker 5: the way to do it. I mean, it's it's hard
- 39:29Speaker 5: to do it. It's a hand feed enough that you
- 39:32Speaker 5: don't let it go dry, you know.
- 39:34Speaker 3: But if you can get.
- 39:34Speaker 5: Out to a spot every other day and throw a
- 39:37Speaker 5: couple of bags of corn out or whatever it takes,
- 39:39Speaker 5: I mean a bel alf alpha, however you want to
- 39:42Speaker 5: do it hand feeding and not having a big feeder
- 39:45Speaker 5: that's making a bunch of noise and a big you
- 39:47Speaker 5: know feeder pen and cattle country that just it looks
- 39:50Speaker 5: like somebody set up a town, you know, in the
- 39:52Speaker 5: middle of the deer woods. So not having that is
- 39:55Speaker 5: pretty I think that's a pretty big key to debating situation.
- 40:00Speaker 2: So so are you saying that it's the the physical like
- 40:05Speaker 2: feeder that would freak out mature bucks or is it
- 40:08Speaker 2: the fact that you going in there associates your presence
- 40:11Speaker 2: with food, and then they're not as wigged out when
- 40:14Speaker 2: you go and hunt because they're used to someone coming
- 40:16Speaker 2: in every other day.
- 40:17Speaker 5: I think it's more about the noise that a feeder
- 40:20Speaker 5: would make, and some somewhat the visual aspect. I don't
- 40:24Speaker 5: think it's it's necessarily an association.
- 40:28Speaker 3: Uh.
- 40:28Speaker 5: It's an association with humans, but not necessarily because they
- 40:31Speaker 5: hear or see you.
- 40:32Speaker 3: It's just an odd looking thing on the landscape, you know.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I also think that if I can add two, that
- 40:38Speaker 4: the free choice aspect of hand feeding is way better
- 40:42Speaker 4: than the timed feeder uh situation. And now you will
- 40:47Speaker 4: feed a lot more so if you're traveling you have
- 40:50Speaker 4: a deer, least or something that you're feeding on, you're
- 40:52Speaker 4: gonna have to do the time or thing usually. But
- 40:55Speaker 4: say if you're if you're feeding locally, man, my dear,
- 40:58Speaker 4: just I will have so much many more dear on
- 41:00Speaker 4: my property if I do what Tyler's talking about, put
- 41:03Speaker 4: corn out on the ground in large quantities.
- 41:06Speaker 3: But they still it's not like they're they're all day.
- 41:09Speaker 4: They're still there around deer times, you know, like you
- 41:12Speaker 4: know the you know the.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Hour window there after daylight, but they're just more comfortable.
- 41:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, there you go.
- 41:20Speaker 3: There's your fuck Cavlie worried.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Uh They uh, they're just more comfortable just knowing that
- 41:26Speaker 4: the food source is there as opposed to the It's
- 41:29Speaker 4: something about just I think that big Bucks know that
- 41:33Speaker 4: a feeder is unreliable in the sense that maybe something
- 41:36Speaker 4: already got there and ate the food, so they may
- 41:38Speaker 4: or may not go there that night.
- 41:40Speaker 3: But if you have of eight station set up that.
- 41:42Speaker 4: They just know that there's been food there the last
- 41:45Speaker 4: ten days, they're they're probably a little bit more apt
- 41:47Speaker 4: to go there. And also, uh, I could add to
- 41:51Speaker 4: that as well, if you want bait to be effective,
- 41:54Speaker 4: you need to hunt it on good winds and hunt
- 41:57Speaker 4: it really particularly like uh uh, because I mean it's
- 42:02Speaker 4: just like any other thing that concentrates the deer.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Like the deer know that and they're going to go
- 42:06Speaker 3: downwind of it.
- 42:07Speaker 4: So if your wind is a little off or whatever
- 42:10Speaker 4: it may be, and you booger one, like, he's not
- 42:13Speaker 4: going to recover from that quickly.
- 42:14Speaker 3: He can find something else to eat.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Yep. Makes sense. Kind of like a food source of
- 42:21Speaker 2: any kind of food pluck.
- 42:22Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, all right, I'm gonna send you back out
- 42:37Speaker 6: of state, back on the road doing your traveling thing.
- 42:40Speaker 2: We'll say you're somewhere in that Midwest Ish region and
- 42:45Speaker 2: you're several days into a hunt, let's say you know,
- 42:50Speaker 2: three or four, and you've you've kind of been zeroing
- 42:54Speaker 2: in on the stuff, like you you're figuring it out.
- 42:56Speaker 2: You've found your spots, kind of like Tyler, you know
- 42:58Speaker 2: you've found some buck. You scout a couple of nights,
- 43:01Speaker 2: you realize like, oh man, like I found my kill spot.
- 43:03Speaker 2: You're heading in for a kill hunt. Like you feel good.
- 43:05Speaker 2: You got like those little nervous jitters because you're just
- 43:08Speaker 2: confident that like you're in it. You're getting close to
- 43:12Speaker 2: your spot, they'll hiking and all of a sudden you
- 43:14Speaker 2: see fresh boot tracks, like someone there are boot tracks
- 43:17Speaker 2: here that were not here you know last time you
- 43:19Speaker 2: walked in, whether it was this morning, the night before
- 43:21Speaker 2: or whatever. Uh, someone's been in here. Does that change
- 43:26Speaker 2: your strategy? Do you still go to your spot even
- 43:28Speaker 2: though there's boot prints like close to where you're planning
- 43:30Speaker 2: on setting up, or do you push through and do
- 43:33Speaker 2: your thing regardless of what this person might have done
- 43:36Speaker 2: or has not done.
- 43:39Speaker 3: I'm glad he asked you. This is a very good question.
- 43:43Speaker 5: Mark, You're a good question asker, I'd say, I mean,
- 43:49Speaker 5: this is this is very like situational dependent.
- 43:55Speaker 3: Oh you could say that, but.
- 43:58Speaker 5: I would say so some of the variables, some of
- 44:01Speaker 5: the variables that you would kind of consider would be
- 44:04Speaker 5: like how many spots do you have?
- 44:07Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 44:07Speaker 5: If you don't have very many spots that you feel
- 44:09Speaker 5: good about, then probably just gonna go ahead and commit
- 44:13Speaker 5: and see what you see when you get in there.
- 44:16Speaker 5: You know, I mean, because this guy might have just
- 44:18Speaker 5: done what you know you wanted to do and burn
- 44:21Speaker 5: in there real quick and done a quick scouting session.
- 44:23Speaker 5: It might not a mess anything up too bad. And
- 44:27Speaker 5: I think so you got to kind of understand, like
- 44:29Speaker 5: what your backup plans are. You want to have some,
- 44:31Speaker 5: but you don't always because later in the trip sometimes
- 44:35Speaker 5: you've already gone through a lot of those and seen
- 44:37Speaker 5: what actually panned out to be a pretty good spot.
- 44:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 44:41Speaker 5: Another thing is like what does the area set up?
- 44:45Speaker 5: Like are you hunting?
- 44:47Speaker 1: You know?
- 44:47Speaker 3: Are you going in there to cottonwood drainage?
- 44:50Speaker 5: And you know, I don't know Nebraska or North Dakota,
- 44:54Speaker 5: and there's not really a whole lot of habitat in there,
- 44:58Speaker 5: and this guy's headed right into the nearest.
- 45:01Speaker 3: You know, betting hole that you figure is in there.
- 45:05Speaker 5: You know, I think it's that's that's kind of another
- 45:07Speaker 5: question you kind of have to answer to to understand
- 45:10Speaker 5: what your final answer is in this scenario. I think
- 45:15Speaker 5: I probably tend to, uh continue until I like figure
- 45:22Speaker 5: out for sure like this dude is in here or
- 45:26Speaker 5: you know, went right into a spot that was a
- 45:28Speaker 5: bad spot.
- 45:29Speaker 4: You know.
- 45:29Speaker 5: Another thing that you that helps you make that decision
- 45:32Speaker 5: is we I've gotten really really.
- 45:37Speaker 3: I don't know, I really consider ground scent pretty heavily now.
- 45:41Speaker 5: In the last couple of years, I've just I've really
- 45:45Speaker 5: worked on access a lot as being like a big
- 45:48Speaker 5: part of uh the hunt for me, and to understand
- 45:52Speaker 5: how what the best access is and how ground scent
- 45:56Speaker 5: can really mess up a hunt. Over the last few years,
- 45:59Speaker 5: I've seen that and and so I'm trying to really
- 46:02Speaker 5: limit that. So if this guy to me, if he's
- 46:06Speaker 5: walking you know, on or across a trail that is
- 46:10Speaker 5: going to be leading to my tree, that's that's an
- 46:14Speaker 5: issue I'm probably bailing at that point.
- 46:16Speaker 3: You know, if it's it's a very.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Fresh boot track, what's you kissy.
- 46:23Speaker 4: We'll probably are a little more different on this, I guess,
- 46:26Speaker 4: but not drastically.
- 46:28Speaker 3: I just am going to lean towards.
- 46:30Speaker 4: Bouncing, uh, just because I think in most situations, I
- 46:37Speaker 4: have some other good opportunities that I could go to
- 46:41Speaker 4: instead of you.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Know, staying there and just just getting somebody's leftover.
- 46:47Speaker 4: You know, Like there's a few places that I know
- 46:50Speaker 4: that I hunt that are pretty forgiving in this stuff,
- 46:54Speaker 4: and that usually has to do with like it being
- 46:56Speaker 4: the only food source in for miles, and outside of that,
- 47:01Speaker 4: I just don't like to go where other people are
- 47:04Speaker 4: too much, I mean, and it does pay dividends.
- 47:07Speaker 3: It is more difficult because some places it's hard to find.
- 47:09Speaker 4: A spot where there's nobody, you know, you can talk
- 47:12Speaker 4: about like what you're saying there in Michigan, where there's
- 47:15Speaker 4: you know, half million folks going into the woods that
- 47:18Speaker 4: you might not find a partialow just doesn't have a
- 47:20Speaker 4: dude on it. But if if the option is there,
- 47:23Speaker 4: I'm probably going to try to figure something else out,
- 47:26Speaker 4: just because I not to discredit the general hunting populace, right.
- 47:33Speaker 4: I think I'm glad that people are getting out there,
- 47:35Speaker 4: but I don't trust the guy that was in there
- 47:37Speaker 4: before me to have made any good decisions. And I
- 47:39Speaker 4: think that that he might have right, It might have
- 47:42Speaker 4: been degging Bill Winki in there, you know, but like
- 47:47Speaker 4: you just have to assume the worst because it's a
- 47:50Speaker 4: great way to be hunting ghostbucks, you know, yeah, glosses.
- 47:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, you man, you talk about wasting some time.
- 47:59Speaker 3: You know, it's there really a bad way to do that.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Yeah, man, you're right. Even if it is Bill Winkie,
- 48:05Speaker 2: he sleeps at the base of his tree these days,
- 48:07Speaker 2: so you know, you don't know what you're gonna get.
- 48:09Speaker 2: There might be a tent all set up down there, too,
- 48:11Speaker 2: so watch out for Winkies tracks man like John Rambo.
- 48:19Speaker 2: All right, So I'm I'm with you guys on that.
- 48:23Speaker 2: I don't I don't particularly like h like seeing boots
- 48:26Speaker 2: coming in, but it is situational. Let's uh. I had
- 48:31Speaker 2: another kind of pressure lay question. But in the interesting time,
- 48:34Speaker 2: let's speed up and go into November, and I've got
- 48:38Speaker 2: a specific November question for you guys. Let's let's again
- 48:42Speaker 2: say you're in the Midwest. I'm gonna put you, like
- 48:44Speaker 2: in Illinois. You guys hunted there recently and had an
- 48:48Speaker 2: interesting hunt. Let's say you're back in Illinois, but it's
- 48:50Speaker 2: November and you discover a spot that's deep in the
- 48:54Speaker 2: cover that's like a no questions asked big buck hotspot.
- 48:58Speaker 2: There's a creek running through some tim you can see
- 49:01Speaker 2: a pretty defined crossing of the creek, and there's betting,
- 49:04Speaker 2: but it's all around you. Like it's a dynamite pinch
- 49:07Speaker 2: sort of because you've got this like very defined creek crossing,
- 49:09Speaker 2: but there's also betting all over the place, so it's
- 49:11Speaker 2: not like a terrain or it's not a not a
- 49:13Speaker 2: cover pinch. You can tell, like there's definitely bucks moving
- 49:18Speaker 2: in here. It's the rut they're gonna be crossing here.
- 49:20Speaker 2: They're checking these betting areas. It screams out good from
- 49:23Speaker 2: that standpoint, there's big bucks signing all around. Problem is,
- 49:27Speaker 2: there just does not seem to be a way to
- 49:29Speaker 2: hunt this spot without deer winding you because of all
- 49:32Speaker 2: that cover around you, and because there's betting on both
- 49:34Speaker 2: sides of the creek and kind of all around, and
- 49:36Speaker 2: it's a relatively high deer density area. So what do
- 49:40Speaker 2: you do in that situation? Do you hunt this despite
- 49:43Speaker 2: that riskiness of the wind and just say, man, it's
- 49:47Speaker 2: so good, I gotta hunt it and I'll deal with
- 49:48Speaker 2: the consequences of wind of some does winding merror or whatever?
- 49:52Speaker 2: Or do you hunt off the hot spot in some
- 49:54Speaker 2: kind of a way but you have a safer wind.
- 49:58Speaker 2: What would you do? Tyler?
- 50:01Speaker 4: Time?
- 50:04Speaker 2: I just know you, I know, I know you need
- 50:06Speaker 2: more time.
- 50:06Speaker 3: Casey, okay, processing exactly. So how big is this betting area?
- 50:17Speaker 2: Let's say we're talking like this is five six seven
- 50:22Speaker 2: acres that kind of thing, Like it's a it's five
- 50:25Speaker 2: acres ish, So that's like a yeah, let's go that
- 50:28Speaker 2: number for simplicity.
- 50:29Speaker 3: The pinch. What's creating the pinch.
- 50:31Speaker 2: It's like a creek crossing. So when I say, when
- 50:34Speaker 2: I say, I'm not a pinch might have been the
- 50:36Speaker 2: wrong word, but like there's a there's a funneling effect
- 50:39Speaker 2: because there's like a one very defined creek crossing. And
- 50:41Speaker 2: let's say there's like high banks in most other places,
- 50:43Speaker 2: so this is like there's not like twenty of these
- 50:46Speaker 2: creek crossings. This is like the creek crossing for quite
- 50:48Speaker 2: a ways.
- 50:49Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay, so I learned this growing up fishing like
- 50:53Speaker 5: Fork in Texas, which is a kind of renowned bass like.
- 50:56Speaker 3: But the big trees grow by the creek, and.
- 51:03Speaker 5: The way that I would hunt this, I would probably
- 51:06Speaker 5: be pretty aggressive and try to get.
- 51:08Speaker 3: In there, especially considering this is the rut.
- 51:11Speaker 5: I would try to find a way to make an
- 51:15Speaker 5: assumption about I always try to assume where the deer
- 51:19Speaker 5: coming from, even if it's the rut, Like which side
- 51:23Speaker 5: do I think that these deer coming from, because they
- 51:25Speaker 5: even in the rut, these they're generally going to relate
- 51:29Speaker 5: bed to feed at least the dose. And then you
- 51:33Speaker 5: can make assumptions about if bucks are really amped up
- 51:37Speaker 5: and they're you know, trying to encounter those go in
- 51:39Speaker 5: the opposite way, or you know how that works out,
- 51:43Speaker 5: Like in any scenario, there's a bunch of variables. But
- 51:47Speaker 5: I would say that that I would hang in one
- 51:49Speaker 5: of those big trees right over the creek, potentially one
- 51:52Speaker 5: that hangs out over the creek, and I would let
- 51:56Speaker 5: my thermal in November a lot of times, supecially if
- 52:00Speaker 5: you get a high pressure day, which is gonna be
- 52:02Speaker 5: a good day to hunt November right at dark, you're
- 52:05Speaker 5: gonna get just a falling thermal and.
- 52:08Speaker 3: The wind's gonna die, probably more than likely.
- 52:10Speaker 5: And if that's the case, I would hang out over
- 52:12Speaker 5: that creek and let my wind just fall into the
- 52:15Speaker 5: creek and away from that crossing, and I would I
- 52:20Speaker 5: would shoot the first big buck that comes through in
- 52:23Speaker 5: the in the the gray hour. But I would also
- 52:27Speaker 5: say that I'm not afraid to sit in a place
- 52:32Speaker 5: during the rut where my wind is blowing in a
- 52:35Speaker 5: pretty shady direction down the trail, because I think a
- 52:38Speaker 5: lot of times, if you can, if you can make
- 52:40Speaker 5: a really good assumption about which way that you're traveling,
- 52:43Speaker 5: a lot of times what you're gonna get is a
- 52:45Speaker 5: dough with a buck pretty hot on her trail, and
- 52:48Speaker 5: you just have to make sure you can shoot that
- 52:50Speaker 5: buck before the dough gets you, or you can rely
- 52:55Speaker 5: on this and it works. The buck and the dough
- 52:59Speaker 5: are so just you know, you know, frenzy that they
- 53:02Speaker 5: don't even they don't even wind you.
- 53:04Speaker 3: You know, they the DEVI will run through your winds sometimes.
- 53:07Speaker 3: So it's I mean, the rut is the bast man.
- 53:09Speaker 3: I love. It's hard to be.
- 53:12Speaker 2: I like it. Casey, what about you.
- 53:15Speaker 3: So I like Tyler's answers. I guess I'll just kind
- 53:19Speaker 3: of have some additions to that.
- 53:21Speaker 4: Really, if it's really the rut, I think that calling
- 53:27Speaker 4: can work and say you feel good about.
- 53:31Speaker 3: This place for a few days.
- 53:34Speaker 4: Sitting up a little bit off of that and calling
- 53:38Speaker 4: to deer that are coming through there could be a
- 53:41Speaker 4: way for you to at least give it a day.
- 53:44Speaker 4: You know, go in there, try to grunt at a
- 53:47Speaker 4: big buck who's who's cruising through the creek crossing getting
- 53:50Speaker 4: to come off of it, and if he won't, then
- 53:52Speaker 4: the next day go in and burn the tar of
- 53:54Speaker 4: that thing and just hint it hard.
- 53:56Speaker 3: But that that is one day. If you want to
- 53:57Speaker 3: play a little bit more conservative, you can do that.
- 53:59Speaker 3: It's good idea. Also, access would be a big thing
- 54:03Speaker 3: for me.
- 54:04Speaker 4: And uh if you can walk the bottom of the
- 54:06Speaker 4: creek to get in there, that's gonna.
- 54:08Speaker 3: Be awesome, because I think that.
- 54:14Speaker 4: Blowing you in one uh through betting area is one thing,
- 54:17Speaker 4: but just swiping the whole sap sucker, because you can
- 54:20Speaker 4: just you know, have to walk in and your wind
- 54:23Speaker 4: just goes through the whole thing as you're walking. That's
- 54:26Speaker 4: really bad And stomping through there. It's bad too because
- 54:29Speaker 4: it's probably fixed. You're gonna make a lot of noise. See,
- 54:31Speaker 4: you have a lot of that going on as well.
- 54:32Speaker 4: So if you can get down in the creek to
- 54:33Speaker 4: get to get your access in, I would feel a
- 54:36Speaker 4: lot better about that. And then me, being the guy
- 54:40Speaker 4: who likes mornings, I might like to hunt this on
- 54:43Speaker 4: a morning because just like Tyler was talking about, I
- 54:47Speaker 4: love that thermal suck with the cold water, you know,
- 54:50Speaker 4: and having everything fall down into, you know, the the
- 54:55Speaker 4: valley as it cools.
- 54:56Speaker 3: Off in the evening.
- 54:57Speaker 4: That also can work in the morning though, as everything
- 54:59Speaker 4: heats up around you, the cold water is gonna still
- 55:03Speaker 4: kind of hold like a little pocket of air down there,
- 55:05Speaker 4: and if you can tap into.
- 55:06Speaker 3: That, you're in really good shape. And also a thing
- 55:09Speaker 3: I've seen work.
- 55:11Speaker 4: It's kind of crazy and I almost don't believe it,
- 55:14Speaker 4: but I think it's a deal that not a lot
- 55:15Speaker 4: of people talk about, is that if you have a
- 55:18Speaker 4: really frosty morning, but say it's you know, as soon
- 55:23Speaker 4: as the sun comes out, it gets above freezing. So
- 55:25Speaker 4: say you know, it got down to thirty one, but
- 55:29Speaker 4: sun hits everything and he gets.
- 55:30Speaker 3: In the forties real quick and it's sunny.
- 55:34Speaker 4: There is some level of a straight up thermal on
- 55:38Speaker 4: dead still days that you get from evaporation, and I
- 55:41Speaker 4: think that this is that scenario just screams that to me.
- 55:45Speaker 4: If you can get like a November fourth where it's
- 55:48Speaker 4: just dead calm in the morning and it's frosty, and
- 55:51Speaker 4: you let that sun come up, like you can just
- 55:54Speaker 4: have just this lift from the evaporating water vapor that
- 55:57Speaker 4: just brings all your scent up and maybe out, or
- 56:01Speaker 4: at least it's going to give you enough of a window,
- 56:04Speaker 4: you know, to to not have deer just you know,
- 56:07Speaker 4: two hundred yards away smelling you because there's no there's
- 56:10Speaker 4: no wind to take it to them.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a that's an interesting idea there, and.
- 56:19Speaker 3: It works.
- 56:21Speaker 2: No, I like it. I was just thinking through like
- 56:24Speaker 2: there's all these little things that that that creak gives
- 56:27Speaker 2: you these advantages I think in a lot of ways too,
- 56:29Speaker 2: like the thermal effects and the access to effects, and
- 56:33Speaker 2: that really does help you get away with some things
- 56:36Speaker 2: in these like heavy cover betting area kind of zones
- 56:39Speaker 2: that you otherwise might not be able to get away with.
- 56:42Speaker 2: I've had a few of these myself and this is, uh,
- 56:45Speaker 2: these are all things I've seen one more situational one,
- 56:51Speaker 2: and I think we'll get to our rapid fire and
- 56:53Speaker 2: wrap this sucker up for you. November again, we'll say
- 56:59Speaker 2: we're pushing a little bit. Let's put you like November tenth,
- 57:03Speaker 2: and you're out of state. It's day three and on
- 57:10Speaker 2: the first day when you set up, you or when
- 57:12Speaker 2: you arrived, you're doing your truck scouting maybe and you
- 57:15Speaker 2: hung a few cameras in a few like easy to
- 57:17Speaker 2: get two places like I've seen you Tyler, like hop
- 57:19Speaker 2: off out of the truck and put a camera on
- 57:21Speaker 2: the side of the road. Let's say it's something kind
- 57:23Speaker 2: of like that, like you found some easy to access spots,
- 57:26Speaker 2: you put up a couple cell cameras. Let's say to
- 57:28Speaker 2: begin now, it's day three and you've kind of figured
- 57:33Speaker 2: you're figuring some stuff out. You're finding locations that you
- 57:35Speaker 2: think will be good. You're kind of finding some rut
- 57:38Speaker 2: pinch point or betting yar kind of zones, and you're
- 57:40Speaker 2: you're getting there, but maybe you don't have like the
- 57:43Speaker 2: spot within the spot on the spot, but you're heading
- 57:45Speaker 2: somewhere you feel pretty confident with it's the evening hunt.
- 57:48Speaker 2: You're on your way to the evening hunt, and then
- 57:50Speaker 2: your phone pings and you get the cell camera upload
- 57:55Speaker 2: from the day previous and you get daylight pictures of
- 57:59Speaker 2: a shooter buck elsewhere, like somewhere that's not where you're headed.
- 58:06Speaker 2: How do you factor this new piece of intel into
- 58:09Speaker 2: your hunting strategy? Does it change what you're doing that night?
- 58:14Speaker 2: Does it change what you're doing the next day at all?
- 58:16Speaker 2: Or is one single daylight photo over shooter buck not
- 58:20Speaker 2: enough for you to do something with that case, you
- 58:24Speaker 2: get to go first because you are equal with Tyler
- 58:27Speaker 2: in my favorite rankings.
- 58:33Speaker 3: We're just on the same plane.
- 58:38Speaker 4: Thanks Mark. Let me think about this. So, first of all,
- 58:45Speaker 4: I think it's funny that you said, like yesterday's stelf
- 58:48Speaker 4: on stuff uploads, because I guess.
- 58:52Speaker 3: Twenty four hours is the delineator of like what's ethical
- 58:55Speaker 3: and what's not.
- 58:55Speaker 2: Is that what you're saying, Well, that's just what I do,
- 58:58Speaker 2: but some people do it to me. But I'm just saying, like,
- 59:01Speaker 2: but we'll roll with that.
- 59:03Speaker 3: Okay, okay, but.
- 59:04Speaker 2: You could tell me. But you could tell me like
- 59:06Speaker 2: if you have it on timely or instant and you
- 59:08Speaker 2: get an instant picture like right then what you would do.
- 59:14Speaker 3: Quite a bit or every three hours or so.
- 59:15Speaker 4: But I don't actually let it determine my moves right away,
- 59:20Speaker 4: like hardly ever, except for on hogs, which is we're
- 59:22Speaker 4: not talking about right so we're talking about white tail.
- 59:25Speaker 3: One daylight picture.
- 59:28Speaker 4: That means that but cruised through, he didn't hang out,
- 59:32Speaker 4: he didn't check a scrape, he didn't tend to go there.
- 59:36Speaker 4: I would This is a little bit location dependent, but
- 59:41Speaker 4: let's just say we're kind of like in the Midwest,
- 59:44Speaker 4: and uh, do your covering ground.
- 59:46Speaker 3: Uh.
- 59:47Speaker 4: I would probably just use that as an indicator as
- 59:51Speaker 4: to the time of day that I think bucks may
- 59:54Speaker 4: be on their feet, and I'm.
- 59:56Speaker 3: Probably wouldn't let it affect my decis to go hunt
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: that particular buck at that place.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: Too much, except for I'm gonna kind of just pretty
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: much rewrite what I just said. I know he's in
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: the area, and that means a lot to me, so
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: like I'm not I'm not gonna go and think that
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: I'm gonna go set up and hunt him that exact
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: pattern for the next day.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: In fact, this happened for me in Oklahoma this past year.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: It wasn't it was like three days, but three days
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: before I had the picture of the deer I killed
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: in Oklahoma, had a picture of him at night even
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: I believe it was or maybe it was real late
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: or something, and we're actually were having a slow hunt,
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: and uh, that gave me the confidence to just know
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: that that deer does live in that area, he's there,
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: like he's he's not super far away, and went in
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: there on a first time set and killed him and
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: on a morning whenever he was there, like I think
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: it was like eleven thirty pm, you know, or something
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: like that.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: So it's almost like the picture of the buck just
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: lets me know.
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: That he's still alive and that he is in the area,
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: and then I still just make the best hunting decision
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: I can at that moment.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: So, like.
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: I guess your scenario was, you're going into a place
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: you feel good about, but then you see that there
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: was a deer yesterday at another place. If I feel
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: I felt good about my spot, there's a reason I'm
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: there in the first place, right, And I didn't choose
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: the other place because I didn't feel as good about it.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: So you probably shouldn't let it rewrite what you're doing.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: For that evening, just because something else happened yesterday at
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: the other place that was a little convoluted. I didn't
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: really have a lot of direction, but I did the
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: whole just talk my thoughts like you asked for.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: So that's perfect.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: And just the gist of it is that I would
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: continue on with the plan if I felt good about it,
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: and that was the scenario, like if there's if you're
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: a number one spot, is your ain't number one spot,
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: and all the conditions are set up right for it,
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: then go hunt.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: That because it's the rut and it's gonna be good.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Trust it. Yeah, I like it? How about you, Tyl?
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: I would say November tenth is one of my favorite,
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: maybe my favorite date.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: You killed the buck on remember tenth? I killed the
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: nameless on November tenth. Yeah, I killed a big one.
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: My biggest year. I killed on the eleventh. But I
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: like the tenth a lot, which I don't. I don't
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: hunt the upper Upper Midwest much, you know, so it's
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: probably different and it's just a long way from home,
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: so we don't ever make it up to you know,
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: weird places like Michigan too often, but.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: We I love welcome.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: I was there this summer.
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: Actually it's great, great, save you a great sea anyway.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Didn't even go fishing.
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: So I, like I said, I like the tenth a
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: lot because I think it's one of the most rage
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: rout rage days of the whole year.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: I feel like in a lot of the places I hunt.
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: And so with that in mind, seeing that picture is
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: not really gonna divert my plan.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: In fact, I'm with case.
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: It's almost like if I have a plan, I'm headed somewhere,
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: I'm not divert diverting from that for any sort of
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: positive influence. Really it's it would only be for a
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: negative influence, like the Winkie's track being in there.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: You know. So I feel like that it's not gonna
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: divert me.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: And I would just make a note that the reason
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: cell cams are are are great, but just trail cameras
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: in general are a big part of what we do
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: that just helps us to learn more about like like
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: I can't tell you how many times that I'm able
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: to or either one of us.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: I mean, like the story he just mentioned, or able
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: to kill a deer.
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: Not necessarily where the trail camera was, but because we
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: had photos of him at a certain time, especially like
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: night photos. We'll get night photos a lot because we're
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: running and setting a camera right next to the.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: Road and hiding it, you know, down low in the
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: grass or something, and they're easy to check.
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: So it's a it's a time efficiency thing. But you
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: know you're gonna get get dark pictures. But then that's
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: when you start making assumptions about betting and and also
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: like you know, uh, deer density assumptions for that property
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: or that area as well. So you know, the one
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: buck is not really gonna fire me up, even if
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: it's a monster, a monster mind, but yeah, he's not
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: gonna he's not gonna like, uh, one thirty walking through
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: there is probably not gonna really change a whole lot
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: for me. But if you know, a one oh five
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: and two, when thirties walk through there within like a
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: four or five day window.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: I might start thinking about what's going on over there,
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: you know.
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: So it really is more that those trail cameras uh
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: allow us to think about areas that maybe we weren't
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: one hundred percent sure about.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: I mean, they're just the eyes when we're not there,
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: you know, Mark, I want to change my answer if
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: a one ninety is on there the day before I'm
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: going to the other place. I'm gonna make it, you know,
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: like it's kind of a joke, but it is true.
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: I mean, there's hardly anyone who is solely motivated for
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: me when he comes to Honting, right, I mean, there's
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: a ton of motivations. It's the experience, it's the camaraderie.
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: It's absolutely for me. I love big giant bucks with
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: big antlers. I think they're the coolest animal on the planet,
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: or one of them. Right, So if if there's a
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: world class deer on the other camera, I'm probably changing
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: my plan, but otherwise stick with your answer.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: So then that brings up though another follow up kind
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: of as Tyler was describing his thought process there, I
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: do wonder like, what would get you, guys, other than
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: it being a mega giant, what would get you to
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: change that answer? So, same exact scenario. But now if
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: I told you that there were two different mature Bucks
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: that showed up in daily that evening, is that enough
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: or would it take three? So if you saw three
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: different mature Bucks come through the same place in the
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: same evening, would that be enough to be like, oh,
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: there's something like, what would that be? Is there a number?
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Is there a threshold for both of you?
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: Two is two is definitely something to kind of raise
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: your eyebrow about. I mean it's like two, you're starting
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: to make some considerations. Especially man, if you if you
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: do get the truck camera picture that is a scrape
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: over a scrape, and it's it's you know, like if
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: it's just uh, if you just got this thing on
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: a fence post in like a low spot that.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: Goes uh, you know, by the road or whatever.
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: I may not do that, but if you're in a
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: spot that like you could hang pretty close to that
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: camera and potentially kill them, uh, you know, over a
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: scrape or something like that, that just kind of gives
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: you a few more signals as to what's going on.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: Then that that makes a difference for sure.
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: And I think I think definitely I would start thinking
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: about it if two did that in one night, Yeah.
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: I would want to know how closely were time wise too,
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: I think that would make a difference. Yeah, yeah, And
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: if they were hitting the same direction, if there was
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: a dough on camera right before that, because in my mind,
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: the first scenari that pops up is like, oh, hot
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: Dough went through because this actually happened in Oklahoma. There
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: was like three bucks that were all shooters within like
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: a forty five minute period on a camera. I don't
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: even think we were in state at the time when
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: that happened, but it was like, Wow, something happened that
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: day that was wild.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: And so I think that if you.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: Want to capitalize on like that concentration of bucks, you
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: absolutely have to go in there because they're not going
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: to do that. They're they're aggressive, right, They're not territorial,
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: but like they're gonna work out that pecking order within
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: the first couple of days that all three bucks happened
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: to be in the same core area, So it might
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: be a time when you're like, Okay, these guys are
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: feeling frisky, let's go in there and do some aggressive
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: calling and kill one of them.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Yep, yep. Yeah, that would definitely make it more interesting
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: when you've got multiple bucks doing the same thing. Yeah,
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: all right, so rapid fire here. I'm going to ask
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: you guys a series of questions and you can only
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: answer like the one word answer. I'm going to give
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: you no explanation, and I want you to say the
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: answers at the exact same time, so it'll be like playing.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: It'll be like, you know, paper scissors rock kind of,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: but you'll both say the answer at the same time.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: Okay, is that really worded?
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: How do you say it? You know that sounds that
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: does some better? That sounds right. I think I'm just
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: I think I'm just I'm thrown off here.
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: Hey dude, I'm like thankful to no guy that can
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: like reorder the words on the make.
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: It work like.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: I'm a little different. All right, all right, So are
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: you guys ready? Yep, all right, And I know the
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: answers to some of these for you guys, but for
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: the sake of the audience, give me your your your answer,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: same time. One word. Here we go. Would you take
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: a fifty yard shot at a white tail with your bow?
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Yes or no? Yes? If you could only it's pretty
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: funny here and you guys synchronized like that. If you
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: could only have one of these, one of these tools
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: for the rest of your hunts, for the rest of
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: your days. You have to pick rattling antlers or grunt
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: tube which she picks hm hm expandable or fixed blade
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: expandable or fixed blade broadheads, A hard time, not just
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: like envisioning you two goofballs in the truck looking at
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: each other and last to do this. Should you stop
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: a buck with some kind of sound before shooting with
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: a bow? Yes or no.
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: Question?
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: You gotta yes or no.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: It's not answer no question, but I just gotta give
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: just you know, just thank the questions that.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Yes, all right? Does the moon matter to deer movement? Yes?
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: Or no?
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: No?
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: No?
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: If you could, if you could only hunt mornings or
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: evenings for this entire coming season, so you got to
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: you can only get one of the other take mornings
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: or evenings.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: Mornings? Can you even tell who's answering? Kind of okay,
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: I'm a heating guy.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Okay, all right, now this is less of a rapid
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: fire question. You guys can explain yourselves a little bit
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: on this, but but keep it kind of short. I
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: rule the world. I'm in control of your hunting fate.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Maybe you guys know this one. I'm gonna take away
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: your hunting rights and privileges for the rest of your
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: life unless you kill a mature buck this year. So
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: you gotta kill a mature buck this year.
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: Well about Michigan mature because you said that and a half.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: You gotta you gotta kill. I'm gonna tell you a
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: four and a half year old buck or older.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: Okay, all right.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: And here's the trick though, is you only get one
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: day to do it, and you only have one stand site,
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: like one location. So what I need you each to
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: tell me is pick the date on the calendar you're
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: gonna select for this one hunt, and then describe to
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: me the setup you would choose for this very high
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: stakes hunt. I have my I'm gonna throw it, and
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: you got a minute or so to give me your explanation.
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: Okay, all right?
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: So I would I would go head to shoot a
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: mature buck four and a half, right, four and a half?
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: Man, If I if you were gonna take my privileges,
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: I need to guarantee, so.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: I I would go probably some more south of Correzo Springs, Texas,
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: and I would hunt. I would hunt some sort of corn,
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: whether it's uh. They have feeders that go on trucks
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: and they'll feed in entire cindaro, like a thousand yards
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: or whatever, and then they'll turn around.
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: There will be some deer that come out, you know,
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: depending on if they're used.
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: To that, which a lot of those ranches down their
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: feet a lot, but either that or a feeder, and
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: I would shoot a I'd probably shoot like maybe like
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: a two seventy or something like a like a deer rifle,
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: you know what I mean. I would shoot them with
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: a riffle, and I would shoot the most popability dear
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: I could find near the corn.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: And that that's how I do. It's it's freaking oh
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: they December, uh, December Colley. That's a tough one. Twentieth
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: I've never gotten that answer before.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: That is a brand new one. So you guys, you
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: texta guys, give a new perspective. What about you?
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Kis? I mean that is about My answer is to
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: hunt us. Uh.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: You know one of those tower blinds in South Texas
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: that you get to look at five scenarios and I
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: probably would shoot seven mag because that's what I have.
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: But you I would want a powerful deer offle so
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: that you know you're going to kill them, good range,
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: flat trajectory. And I would pick December fourteenth because it's
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: my birthday. That's the only that's the only other difference
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: I think that I would have in there. But I mean, uh,
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: you want to talk about mature deer per square miles.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: There's probably not a better place in the country, and
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: you're giving us budget to have private.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, you filled in the blanks. The are
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: to help yourself out, which is fair. All right, guys,
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Well you you made it to the gauntlet. I think
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: you guys would have would have kept your privileges. I
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: believe in your in your strategy.
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: So well then you know, and i'd say that like
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: if it was it was for hunting privileges. I mean,
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: it's been like an entire year's salary on that thing.
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: Yeah, so you do what you got to do. Definitely,
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: it's yeah, it's within the budget for that kind of.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: H Well, this is fun. I especially enjoy the rapid
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: fire imagining what it looked like in the truck with
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: you guys. Yeah, if only if only we had the
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: video for that part. But real quick, real quick, guys.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Uh for folks listen at home, when can they see
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: the final couple episodes of Buck Truck. Where can they
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: see that? And is there anything particular we've got to
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: look forward to the Restless Fall As far as content
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: coming out from the Element in your team.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: Oh, the for sure.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: The episode with Mark Kenyon and Texas is going to
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: be uh you know, fan favorite for the Wired US too.
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: It was a lot of fun and so I'm excited.
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: I don't remember those dates for sure, but I've got
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: the dates now.
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: As Mark knows, this could change, right yes, September seventh
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: is a buck Truck episode with old Clay Nukelem and
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: our episode with you Mark where we decided against putting
- 1:15:14Speaker 5: Chili's in your sweet teeth.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: Uh, just on that One's good. Oh yeah, we gotta
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: we gotta tell that story before. Yeah.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: October twenty sixth looks like sweet.
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: Uh yeah, that's gonna those are two episodes will be
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: on the med Eater YouTube channel, and then we will
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: be putting out Element stuff on the Element YouTube channel,
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: just kind of as we go and fill in.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: I mean, I think we're out hunting right now.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: So uh, you'll probably be seeing some videos from this
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: season on the Element channel in August, starting in August,
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: so yeah, that's I mean, you find us on Instagram
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: and all the all the good places. Uh, Mark, I
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: just want to say, man, it's uh, I know you
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: get told this a lot and it probably like doesn't
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: really strike you, but like, uh it is an honor
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: to be on your podcast, to be interviewed and to
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: be able to just kind of give our insights man,
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: because there's so many people that have listened to your
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: podcast over years, man, and uh, it is the premiere
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: whitetail hunting podcast.
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: Man. I appreciate what you do and I appreciate your
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: friendship a lot. Man.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: Well, thank you for saying that right back at you. Guys.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: It's uh if we're if we're blowing smoke off talons,
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: I'll keep it going. And to say, it's been really
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: fun to see your guys' journey and evolution too. And
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: I'm very very glad that you chose to team up
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: with us at Wired Hunting Mediator and it's been great
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: to have you part of the crew. And uh hey,
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: speaking of which, just to tease, coming up very very
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: soon after this episode airs, will be the kickoff of
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: another season of ret Fresh Radio, which is our weekly
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: Dear Activity Report that you two started hosting for us
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: last year and we'll continue this year. So yeah that
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: when this one airs, it'll only be like a week
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: or two out from that kicking off, So get ready
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: for ret Fresh coming soon.
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: All right, Man, I am ready to be real fresh. Hey,
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: when's the when does the one week stuff come out?
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Man?
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: Can we talk about that?
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's supposed to kick off really soon too. I
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: think August twenty ninth is what I heard about the
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: first episode, so as you mentioned, who knows, but last
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: I heard that's when it's supposed to kick off. So
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: we'll be getting into one week in November here shortly.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: All right, all right, mark rapid fire for you.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: You got, you got one question. Then I got to
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: run another meeting.
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: Who has a better chance of making the college football playoffs?
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: Sparti or Michigan?
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Ah Man, I hate to say this because I love
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Michigan State and I hate University of Michigan, but Michigan
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: State's football situation does not look good right now. We
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: had our starting quarterback the last two years, transferred out,
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: our number one wide receiver, transferred out, a lot of
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: question marks across the line. So I'm gonna say University
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: of Michigan has a much better chance as much as
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: I help them.
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: Out with the Manilo deals or something. Who gets some
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: recruits in there, bro, that's it.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: If you guys, if you guys can help us make
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: these podcasts go viral or something. Maybe we'll finally get
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: the payday we've been asking for and we could do that.
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: They would just start hitting the record button before we act,
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: They tell us, then that's true.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: That would have done it today. All right, guys, thank
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: you again. Hey, yeah, thanks Mark, all right, and that'll
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: do it for us today. Thank you for tuning in.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: I appreciate it. A couple of quick updates for you
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: if you're not already signed up for our Wired to
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: Hunt weekly newsletter, heading over to the Meat Eater dot
