- 1:00Speaker 5: Thank you for listening to play, for giving me a
- 1:02Speaker 5: platform to share more about it. I feel good, man.
- 1:08Speaker 5: I'm just overwhelmed by the love. You know, it's so
- 1:11Speaker 5: much and I want to find a way to give
- 1:13Speaker 5: it back. And they telling me like you just got
- 1:15Speaker 5: to sit in and receive right now, shorty.
- 1:17Speaker 6: So I just I feel really good. Like full of gratitude, you.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Know, to being in this long, you know, to have
- 1:25Speaker 5: done so much and you know to still have the
- 1:28Speaker 5: opportunity to put out more and have it received in
- 1:31Speaker 5: a way it's being received right now.
- 1:32Speaker 6: I'm just thankful.
- 1:34Speaker 2: We was in our group chat and one of the
- 1:36Speaker 2: youngins I said, we had you on the schedule one
- 1:38Speaker 2: time for Big d Rode Nation and I was like, man,
- 1:42Speaker 2: I believe she's the best female MC in the country.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Because they were like, oh, man, who's rap City. I
- 1:49Speaker 2: was like, to me, she's the best female rapper in
- 1:55Speaker 2: the country now, and I feel rapper in general. But
- 1:59Speaker 2: if I'm if I'm describing you, I definitely said I
- 2:03Speaker 2: feel that way. I feel like the world man hip hop.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, you know if I'm kind of curating,
- 2:10Speaker 2: like to describe you to this young man, I was
- 2:13Speaker 2: just explaining to him like, yo, like I really don't
- 2:16Speaker 2: know anybody that could rap better than you.
- 2:17Speaker 7: Oh, but let's take it back a little bit.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Yeah, let's take it back, because if we can't assume
- 2:23Speaker 4: everybody know you know what I'm saying, Rahap City, But
- 2:25Speaker 4: can we take it back to Snowfall?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Is it?
- 2:28Speaker 7: What was it?
- 2:29Speaker 6: What's your where I'm from. Yeah, yeah, snow Hill.
- 2:31Speaker 7: Snow Yeah, Snowfall.
- 2:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 5: I like that, though I don't know if it to
- 2:36Speaker 5: apply right right, snow Hill Man, take us bank.
- 2:40Speaker 7: What was it like growing up and you know, North Kakilaki.
- 2:43Speaker 6: I mean it was it was slow, you know, quiet.
- 2:47Speaker 5: It's one of those you know, small towns where it
- 2:49Speaker 5: ain't nothing to do really if you're not in like
- 2:52Speaker 5: sports or your books, you in the streets sports or anything.
- 2:57Speaker 6: Yeah. I played basketball.
- 3:00Speaker 5: I played basketball from age seven until I graduated high school.
- 3:03Speaker 5: And jumper still there, it's there a little bit, yeah, yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 5: one and two, one and two two. Yeah, But I
- 3:13Speaker 5: mean it was just it was easy. I played outside
- 3:15Speaker 5: a lot. You know, we rolled a lot. We have
- 3:17Speaker 5: house parties at the community or parties at the community center.
- 3:21Speaker 6: You know.
- 3:21Speaker 5: It was just country, slow life. It wasn't too much
- 3:25Speaker 5: else to it. You know, everybody in the community connected,
- 3:28Speaker 5: everybody know each other. And yeah, that's that was growing up.
- 3:34Speaker 5: That's the best way I could describe it. I spent
- 3:35Speaker 5: a lot of time with my cousins, you know, just
- 3:38Speaker 5: having a good time pig pickings.
- 3:40Speaker 7: And they kind of introduced you to hip hop.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Right yeah, my older cousins Dion and Kennywood Jr. I
- 3:49Speaker 5: mean I first was introduced to it myself, to like TV,
- 3:53Speaker 5: you know, your your MTV raps, the BT video shows,
- 3:59Speaker 5: the radio, like I was just sitting watching tea videos.
- 4:03Speaker 5: But you know, it was like right around my older cousins,
- 4:06Speaker 5: I got exposed to albums, you know, like you watch
- 4:09Speaker 5: videos on TV, but listening to the whole albums and
- 4:12Speaker 5: listen to the B sides. That was like my little
- 4:15Speaker 5: younger self in the back of the track of like
- 4:17Speaker 5: my mama like you know, take her to so and
- 4:19Speaker 5: so house and you know, they playing nads or they
- 4:22Speaker 5: playing j or they playing.
- 4:24Speaker 7: Tribe or you know whatever it was.
- 4:26Speaker 5: And I'm getting to experienced albums, you know, and even
- 4:29Speaker 5: the style, like they were so hip hop.
- 4:31Speaker 6: So I used to watch emulate how they dressed the.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Boys, you know, like the tims with the photo down tongue,
- 4:38Speaker 5: the nadi Ka jackets or like my Homegirl, my older
- 4:41Speaker 5: cousin Katanian, she's you know, where swim Trucks was in style.
- 4:44Speaker 6: Like I was just into all of it.
- 4:47Speaker 4: But then you went to college and then you know,
- 4:49Speaker 4: how did you meet the ninth wonder? Because you know,
- 4:51Speaker 4: you got you signed with him and stuff like that.
- 4:54Speaker 6: I met him through a friend.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Are you rapping at this particular moment? Not rapping at all?
- 5:01Speaker 6: Yeah. I always wanted to.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Be a rapper since I was like five or six,
- 5:04Speaker 5: but I didn't really I understand the process of how
- 5:07Speaker 5: to become a rapper being from where I was from.
- 5:09Speaker 5: You know, you grew up in a big city LA Chicago,
- 5:12Speaker 5: New York. Like you meet rappers in the street, you
- 5:15Speaker 5: watch them do videos their studios in your city, like
- 5:19Speaker 5: you know, there might be a cipher on the block.
- 5:22Speaker 5: It wasn't like that for me.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Growing up. Everything was on TV and radio. I ain't
- 5:25Speaker 6: know no rappers.
- 5:26Speaker 5: I never saw nobody make a video, so it wasn't
- 5:29Speaker 5: anything that was like attainable to me.
- 5:31Speaker 6: But it was still a dream that I had.
- 5:33Speaker 5: So, you know, I remember one day Saturday morning, I
- 5:36Speaker 5: was cleaning and I took the vacuum holes and tried
- 5:38Speaker 5: to freestyle.
- 5:39Speaker 6: My brother told me I was wax. I ain't never
- 5:41Speaker 6: tried again.
- 5:43Speaker 5: I didn't do it, you know, brother, he kept in
- 5:45Speaker 5: frail I was at that time, So you know, I
- 5:51Speaker 5: was like, well, maybe I'm not a rapping them.
- 5:53Speaker 6: Even though that's what I want to be. But I
- 5:55Speaker 6: started writing poetry.
- 5:57Speaker 5: So when I got to college, I was still in poetry,
- 6:00Speaker 5: but I was really getting to the spoken word form
- 6:04Speaker 5: of it by watching deaf poetry jam. I met some
- 6:07Speaker 5: of my closest friends working at foot Action and just
- 6:11Speaker 5: on campus. And you know, two degrees of separation.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Which college were you at?
- 6:15Speaker 5: North Carolina State University and Raleigh, North Carolina go with
- 6:18Speaker 5: Pat I'm a duke fan of but yeah, that was
- 6:22Speaker 5: due fan since ninety one ain't two Grant Hill, Bobby
- 6:25Speaker 5: Hurley like that era gotcha.
- 6:27Speaker 6: So I just couldn't afford to go to do so
- 6:33Speaker 6: we started a hip hop organization on campus.
- 6:36Speaker 5: So you know, we was doing like rap battles and
- 6:38Speaker 5: I would host everything. I would never be anything, but
- 6:42Speaker 5: you know, just being around them, like soaking it up,
- 6:45Speaker 5: learning because you know, they would go to studios and
- 6:47Speaker 5: that was my first opportunity to see people make music
- 6:49Speaker 5: in front of me, or they have us set up
- 6:51Speaker 5: in that dorm room. We're in the house that they
- 6:54Speaker 5: were wrinting. So I was getting exposed to it and
- 6:56Speaker 5: I was just watching.
- 6:57Speaker 6: And soaking it in. I go home and do my
- 6:59Speaker 6: thing by myself. And shadows.
- 7:01Speaker 5: But one of my closest friends was also in the organization.
- 7:04Speaker 5: He knew what I was doing, and we was at
- 7:06Speaker 5: the studio one day and he was just like, yo,
- 7:08Speaker 5: quit being scary, getting a boog, Like we just having fun.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Ain't nobody here to judge you.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So I started.
- 7:14Speaker 5: I recorded my first two songs, and we did a
- 7:16Speaker 5: mixtape for the organization. But one of the guys in
- 7:20Speaker 5: the group was shadowing Knife at the time, learning how
- 7:22Speaker 5: to use fruity loops, and he asked Knife just to
- 7:25Speaker 5: come meet us all listen to our music. And that's
- 7:27Speaker 5: how I met him, and he saw something in me
- 7:30Speaker 5: that was like, you know, he thought was special. He
- 7:33Speaker 5: wanted to take time and invest in, and the relationship
- 7:36Speaker 5: just blossom from there.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Question, did you finish college?
- 7:41Speaker 6: I was?
- 7:41Speaker 2: And what were you studying?
- 7:42Speaker 6: Accounting?
- 7:44Speaker 2: Wow? Yeah, why I'm just saying no, them classes are classic.
- 7:48Speaker 6: I know why.
- 7:50Speaker 5: And I tell people that's like one of the like
- 7:53Speaker 5: things charity and philanthropy wise, I want to do is
- 7:55Speaker 5: go back to my school and like expose kids to
- 7:58Speaker 5: more options about you know, investing, like what they're passionate about.
- 8:03Speaker 5: Because they pulled me in off and they were like,
- 8:04Speaker 5: you're good at Mathew High scoring, you score high and
- 8:06Speaker 5: that you can be an accountant.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So I just chose.
- 8:10Speaker 6: I was like, all right, you know what I mean?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Did you finish?
- 8:13Speaker 6: So I'm one crewdit credit, shove, get my diploma.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Come on, come on.
- 8:19Speaker 7: Something like this, mad years.
- 8:21Speaker 2: You're gonna go back and walk.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Yeah, still playing like I walked everything. And when you
- 8:25Speaker 5: when you have like UNDERNIGN credits, they let you walk.
- 8:27Speaker 5: So my family's there all the things.
- 8:30Speaker 3: You got that diploma now?
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:32Speaker 5: So I went back the next semester for the UH
- 8:36Speaker 5: for the class, and my dad gave me the tuition
- 8:38Speaker 5: to pay for that class, but I spent it on
- 8:40Speaker 5: something else, to deal with music, and so I had
- 8:43Speaker 5: to drop the class. And they still don't know what
- 8:46Speaker 5: you spend it on, smiling like stud something I don't know.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I don't even your parents your parents now, I guess
- 8:55Speaker 3: it worked out.
- 8:56Speaker 6: It worked out.
- 8:58Speaker 7: I believed in myself.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So a question when did you start? When did you create
- 9:02Speaker 2: your name?
- 9:03Speaker 6: Because I created it while I was doing spoken a word?
- 9:06Speaker 2: Okay, so why did you pick this particular name.
- 9:10Speaker 5: I'm a huge jay Z fan and he has this
- 9:12Speaker 5: documentary out. It's about a reasonable doubt, And in a
- 9:16Speaker 5: documentary he talked about how he became so good with
- 9:20Speaker 5: words because he used to read the dictionary because he
- 9:22Speaker 5: wanted to have a full vocabulary for his raps. So
- 9:26Speaker 5: you know, I was like, bet, I'm going to do
- 9:28Speaker 5: the same thing.
- 9:28Speaker 6: So for like two weeks.
- 9:30Speaker 5: It would didn't last that long, but I would sit
- 9:31Speaker 5: up at night and read the dictionary.
- 9:33Speaker 6: I just picked a letters. When I got to rhapsody,
- 9:35Speaker 6: I loved the definition of it.
- 9:36Speaker 5: It was poetry spoken with great emotion, and I felt like,
- 9:40Speaker 5: even though I was doing poetry, that's still.
- 9:41Speaker 6: What rap was. And so I was just like, oh,
- 9:44Speaker 6: that's flying, run with it. Take the age out.
- 9:47Speaker 7: She's so good man.
- 9:48Speaker 4: We got rhraps City right here on the ball of
- 9:50Speaker 4: our show Man. We'd be right back with more, back
- 9:52Speaker 4: with more of the Brother of Law show. We got
- 9:53Speaker 4: rahps cdy in the building.
- 9:55Speaker 9: Day Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah. She didnt graduate college. She
- 9:59Speaker 9: spent all her money on on the studio.
- 10:00Speaker 6: Time, come on out all. I was responsible for most
- 10:05Speaker 6: of it.
- 10:06Speaker 9: But I mean it makes sense now why people are
- 10:09Speaker 9: kind of upset with like a lot of the rap,
- 10:11Speaker 9: because I don't think a lot of these rappers now
- 10:13Speaker 9: they read.
- 10:14Speaker 5: No know or did they pretending because it's the idea
- 10:19Speaker 5: that it's not cool to be smart. But I believe like,
- 10:21Speaker 5: if you make it in this game, are you successful?
- 10:23Speaker 5: You got to have some type of knowledge on you.
- 10:26Speaker 5: And a lot of the ones that you that sound
- 10:28Speaker 5: like they can't read, they be knowing a lot, you
- 10:31Speaker 5: know what I'm saying.
- 10:32Speaker 9: So do you feel like it's just not any type
- 10:35Speaker 9: of representation for like the younger generation to look up
- 10:38Speaker 9: to as far as the artists like how you was
- 10:39Speaker 9: talking about you had mc light and jay Z and
- 10:42Speaker 9: these were people that you know, we're doing it on
- 10:44Speaker 9: a high level, but was also preaching you know, the
- 10:47Speaker 9: intelligent part of reading.
- 10:49Speaker 6: It depends on where they're getting.
- 10:52Speaker 5: You know, if you're only looking at mainstream, you know,
- 10:55Speaker 5: you may be limited in the representation for that because
- 10:59Speaker 5: it's just it's a certain thing that they push into
- 11:01Speaker 5: the top.
- 11:02Speaker 6: But I think, you know, if if you look outside.
- 11:04Speaker 5: Of mainstream, there's a lot of examples of amazing rappers,
- 11:08Speaker 5: and you can you know that they they're intelligent and
- 11:11Speaker 5: they're smart and they're proud of it.
- 11:13Speaker 6: A soul Vince Staples Schoolboy Q Kendrick J Cole, Tierra
- 11:20Speaker 6: Wag It's it's a lot.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Uh So, it's just where you're getting your music from,
- 11:27Speaker 5: you know, that's that's the biggest thing.
- 11:30Speaker 2: So to kind of reel back a little bit to
- 11:33Speaker 2: what we were talking about now, yeah, sign when you
- 11:38Speaker 2: signed with Knife wonder, correct, what is your next move
- 11:42Speaker 2: after this? Because you're I know, he's assisting with the
- 11:45Speaker 2: curation of creating songs and speaking to the masses. What's
- 11:49Speaker 2: going through your brain? What are you doing now?
- 11:53Speaker 5: I mean it's one of getting better as an MC,
- 11:56Speaker 5: you know, starting to put my brand out there as
- 12:01Speaker 5: an artist.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And how do you do that?
- 12:03Speaker 6: You gotta put music out there.
- 12:06Speaker 5: You got to promote yourself, like figure out how to
- 12:08Speaker 5: do these music videos, you know, figure out how to
- 12:12Speaker 5: get into the PR space and get interviews. It's just
- 12:14Speaker 5: like how do I expose myself? And he told me before,
- 12:18Speaker 5: like it's gonna be a long road. It's gonna be
- 12:20Speaker 5: a seven to ten year road before you ever kind
- 12:24Speaker 5: of peek your head into where you're trying to be
- 12:26Speaker 5: and to hear that.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Can be like very intimidating.
- 12:29Speaker 7: Or discouraging or discourage.
- 12:31Speaker 6: Yeah, but it was something I wanted to see that happened.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Were you discourage at any moment at this particular moment.
- 12:38Speaker 5: Not discouraged, frustrated you know, you have any moments you
- 12:41Speaker 5: get frustrated along the journey, but never discouraged early in
- 12:45Speaker 5: the days, Like that's the best word I could He.
- 12:48Speaker 6: Was just frustrating.
- 12:50Speaker 5: But yeah, so I mean we're in the studio just rapping,
- 12:53Speaker 5: and it was like, you know, proven how good you
- 12:56Speaker 5: are and that you've proven to yourself and to the people,
- 12:59Speaker 5: like it's my first time doing it, and just really
- 13:02Speaker 5: taking as much direction as I can and learning the business,
- 13:07Speaker 5: you know, making connections with people.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Like you're very connected. I would like to say that, like, you.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Know, never left the studio.
- 13:16Speaker 5: I was a studio rap Knife would come there and
- 13:18Speaker 5: TD would pop up, and sometimes I'd be out of
- 13:21Speaker 5: at the time, he probably had like twelve artists, I'd
- 13:23Speaker 5: be the only artist in there, you know. So it's important,
- 13:27Speaker 5: Like if you're gonna do it, you gotta make it
- 13:29Speaker 5: your life.
- 13:30Speaker 6: You know.
- 13:30Speaker 5: If he called and said anybody was come to the studio,
- 13:32Speaker 5: I was there just to meet people and connect and
- 13:35Speaker 5: watch them and learn. It's the cheeks came down when summer.
- 13:37Speaker 5: I remember I stayed there all day all night, watching
- 13:40Speaker 5: and record and just learning and soaking it up.
- 13:44Speaker 6: So that's what it was like.
- 13:45Speaker 5: You know, if Knife went to New York, he would
- 13:47Speaker 5: always extend everybody, like if y'all want to come, come,
- 13:51Speaker 5: Like I remember one time, me and Sundown, one of
- 13:54Speaker 5: the members of Actual Proof, got on the China bus
- 13:57Speaker 5: first and last time I ever took the China Bus.
- 14:01Speaker 5: I went to New York like just to follow him
- 14:03Speaker 5: around and watch what he did. But every everywhere he'd go,
- 14:07Speaker 5: he introduced people like, this is my artist Raps, this
- 14:09Speaker 5: is my artist Hollow, this is my artist whoever.
- 14:12Speaker 6: You know what I mean.
- 14:13Speaker 5: And that made a difference even though they know who
- 14:16Speaker 5: I was, Like you see people enough and then your
- 14:18Speaker 5: name starts to come out a little bit, like they
- 14:20Speaker 5: remember you.
- 14:21Speaker 7: Know, were you living at home at this time?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 14:26Speaker 5: There was a period where I was living with my sister,
- 14:28Speaker 5: and then I got sick and I moved home to
- 14:31Speaker 5: snow Hill. But I would drive to Raleigh, and my
- 14:34Speaker 5: mama got tired of watching me drive because I was
- 14:36Speaker 5: I would sleep at the studio and then get up
- 14:38Speaker 5: and go find a friend house to go take a
- 14:40Speaker 5: shower at and she got tired of that. So this
- 14:42Speaker 5: is when, like I think it was like right before
- 14:45Speaker 5: Obama administration.
- 14:46Speaker 6: Houses was mad cheap, like full clothes.
- 14:49Speaker 5: So they found me like a really nice townhome for
- 14:51Speaker 5: a really cheap price, and I stayed in Raleigh, you know, Okay.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm just highlighting that, Ryan, You know what I'm saying,
- 15:01Speaker 4: because you know, some people need jobs to survive as
- 15:03Speaker 4: they try to chase their dreams.
- 15:05Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I definitely did you have a job.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Where did you work?
- 15:07Speaker 5: I was pushing sneakers that foot action. Still, yeah, I
- 15:11Speaker 5: was still there for that.
- 15:12Speaker 6: I quit a few times, that always went back.
- 15:15Speaker 2: But at least you kept. You kept. You get the
- 15:17Speaker 2: thirty percent off, so I know you're getting there getting
- 15:20Speaker 2: the releases so you can stay fresh.
- 15:21Speaker 7: And I worked at the outlet.
- 15:26Speaker 2: What about your personal life though, because this doesn't sound
- 15:29Speaker 2: like you have a personal life.
- 15:31Speaker 6: I didn't.
- 15:31Speaker 2: No relationship.
- 15:34Speaker 6: Later on, but at.
- 15:36Speaker 2: This particular moment, no.
- 15:37Speaker 6: No, but still I still put the music first.
- 15:40Speaker 2: But no love interest at the time.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Though early on, no no love interest.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I mean you didn't have time to think about it.
- 15:46Speaker 6: I dated, but nothing really lasted long.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Okay, Like I might have dated one guy for like
- 15:53Speaker 5: seven months and I found out he had a girl
- 15:55Speaker 5: at another school. You know, I meant dating another guy
- 15:59Speaker 5: for like three months, like you know, and then I
- 16:02Speaker 5: got in a really long relationship that lasted nine years.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:05Speaker 6: So yeah, okay.
- 16:07Speaker 3: So you pretty much it sounds like you done with love.
- 16:10Speaker 6: Who now I'm really just getting started.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:14Speaker 6: The beautiful thing.
- 16:15Speaker 5: You go through these relationships and you learn a lot
- 16:18Speaker 5: about yourself.
- 16:19Speaker 6: And the last one I learned you hear it on
- 16:21Speaker 6: the album. I learned a whole lot about myself.
- 16:25Speaker 5: And I think when you know who you are and
- 16:26Speaker 5: really what you want and you attract that, I expect
- 16:31Speaker 5: good things in the next one.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Do you gotta do? You gotta like a check book?
- 16:37Speaker 1: Like what?
- 16:39Speaker 3: Okay, I got no checkbook.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I meet who I meant you see how it
- 16:43Speaker 5: is energy, See what their ambitions are, what their personality like,
- 16:47Speaker 5: if they funny, make me laugh?
- 16:49Speaker 6: Please? You know. I ain't got no check mark.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Yeah, we got a check mark right here. We got
- 16:56Speaker 4: to hit that commercial check mark. We'll be right back
- 16:59Speaker 4: with Rhapsody right here on the Baller Alert Show.
- 17:01Speaker 8: We'll be right back with more of the Baller Alert Show.
- 17:06Speaker 8: You're listening to a special edition of The Baller Alert Show.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Yo, Yo, this is Rhapsody and I'm chilling with the
- 17:11Speaker 5: Baller Alert Show on revot Beck with more.
- 17:13Speaker 7: Of the Butler Alert Show. We got Rahap City in
- 17:15Speaker 7: the bill.
- 17:16Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, please don't cry.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Yeah please, Because I have a question, Okay, go ahead.
- 17:22Speaker 2: How accurate is this three AM record? Because this sounds
- 17:26Speaker 2: very one hundred percent? Like, yo, I'm there with you
- 17:32Speaker 2: because I go on YouTube to watch the video and
- 17:34Speaker 2: it's twenty minutes her talking to Eric Abadu that conversations here.
- 17:39Speaker 3: I want to I want to see the video.
- 17:42Speaker 6: We did an unofficial live performance video.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, but the fire I still.
- 17:50Speaker 6: Want to do one.
- 17:51Speaker 5: Like while we were making the record, she was like,
- 17:53Speaker 5: what we're gonna do for the video and she gave
- 17:54Speaker 5: me an idea, so I don't want to rush it,
- 17:57Speaker 5: like you know, she travels the record.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I watch the full twenty minutes. Did it was a
- 18:02Speaker 2: good conversation. I could definitely tell mental health is a
- 18:05Speaker 2: big deal and you guys both take it seriously. But
- 18:10Speaker 2: I can tell that this was very organic. I could
- 18:12Speaker 2: tell you guys, you were speaking truthfully. You know, sometimes
- 18:16Speaker 2: people script things. This correct me for wrong. This wasn't scripted.
- 18:21Speaker 6: No, I went in.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Everyone wasn't. Nothing was scripted, even the one with Sonihilatan Beautiful.
- 18:28Speaker 5: The difference in there did different, but they're very much
- 18:32Speaker 5: honest and authentic, much like your album.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Yeah, we were shooting a.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Music video the same day I did the Sona joint,
- 18:38Speaker 5: and you know, it was gonna start the video. So
- 18:42Speaker 5: she's just like, I'm going to approach it as like
- 18:45Speaker 5: Sydney a reporter. But everything she asked was still spot
- 18:48Speaker 5: on and my answers were just authentic.
- 18:50Speaker 6: It wasn't rehearsing. I didn't even see the questions, so
- 18:53Speaker 6: what BADU?
- 18:55Speaker 1: You know?
- 18:56Speaker 5: It was just like that I'm a i'm a i'm
- 18:59Speaker 5: A lead the questions and I just sat there and
- 19:02Speaker 5: it was just like, whatever came off.
- 19:04Speaker 6: My head I'm going to talk about with love?
- 19:06Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 19:06Speaker 6: Nothing. It was just really off the fly, dopey.
- 19:09Speaker 4: So who came up with that? That conversation series? Is
- 19:13Speaker 4: it over?
- 19:13Speaker 7: I hope?
- 19:14Speaker 9: Not? Like?
- 19:14Speaker 7: Are you going to do more?
- 19:16Speaker 5: We want to do at least one more. They're kind
- 19:19Speaker 5: of in chapters, so so now I was unveiling. Erica
- 19:22Speaker 5: was unconditional about love so we want to do one
- 19:25Speaker 5: more about the heal chapter what healing looks like, so
- 19:29Speaker 5: we'll see, like we got to figure out who.
- 19:31Speaker 6: That person is and the calendar works. But that was
- 19:35Speaker 6: my idea. That's so built team.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Yeah, Like the whole idea of this was like to
- 19:39Speaker 5: connect with people and I wanted people to get to
- 19:41Speaker 5: know me more because I never really gave.
- 19:46Speaker 6: I never really let people all the way in. I
- 19:48Speaker 6: was kind of protecting.
- 19:48Speaker 7: Myself behind them words, not hiding.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I was just protecting myself.
- 19:53Speaker 4: It was kind of hard to I mean when I
- 19:55Speaker 4: say hidden, I mean it's kind of like hard to dissect.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Sometimes you got to really listen like ten times to
- 20:00Speaker 4: really understand. So it's like hitting messages when I mean.
- 20:04Speaker 6: Now you're completely right.
- 20:05Speaker 5: If you don't understand the lyrics and breaking them down,
- 20:08Speaker 5: you're gonna miss a lot of things. And it wouldn't
- 20:11Speaker 5: necessarily I can't say. It might have been a little
- 20:14Speaker 5: intentional and subconscious. I was still trying to prove a
- 20:17Speaker 5: lot too lyrically. But this time is just like I
- 20:19Speaker 5: just want to connect with people and I want to
- 20:20Speaker 5: be more profound and trying to have like these crazy bars,
- 20:23Speaker 5: even though that comes out naturally.
- 20:25Speaker 6: I don't think it's as hidden, you know what I'm saying.
- 20:27Speaker 4: So, yeah, I mean that's I feel like that was
- 20:30Speaker 4: kind of brought to the forefront and today because with
- 20:33Speaker 4: Kendrick versus Drake, you know, it's like a lot of
- 20:35Speaker 4: people want to easy listen sometimes and they don't want
- 20:39Speaker 4: to have to like think or they just want to
- 20:41Speaker 4: just put it on. But with kendricking and your lyrics,
- 20:45Speaker 4: you know, you have to kind of like really pay
- 20:46Speaker 4: attention because there are several times even in this album,
- 20:50Speaker 4: I'm like, oh what I had to listen.
- 20:52Speaker 7: I'm gonna get to the song, but I was like,
- 20:53Speaker 7: let me run that back. What does she mean by that?
- 20:57Speaker 1: You know?
- 20:59Speaker 6: That's the beauty of heart form?
- 21:01Speaker 7: But please don't cry.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Where did this this title come from? I mean I
- 21:05Speaker 5: was I was heartbroken at the time, and I was
- 21:07Speaker 5: I was looking on Pinterests at poems.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Heartbroken from that from that last guy, the.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Longest relationship nine year, it was one after that, Yeah,
- 21:19Speaker 5: shorter one was like a year, but deeper.
- 21:22Speaker 2: What happened for him?
- 21:25Speaker 5: Hey, people fall out of love and they move on,
- 21:28Speaker 5: you know, and you got to learn to accept that.
- 21:30Speaker 6: I had to learn to accept.
- 21:31Speaker 2: It such a mature answer.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a real one. You know, it's an evolved one.
- 21:41Speaker 6: But I.
- 21:44Speaker 5: But I was looking for words to describe how it
- 21:46Speaker 5: feels because it was I was so in it I
- 21:48Speaker 5: couldn't even speak for myself.
- 21:50Speaker 6: And I came across this poem and said, please don't cry.
- 21:53Speaker 5: You won't always feel so broken, and please don't cry
- 21:55Speaker 5: shit out to me, because I was like, I have
- 21:58Speaker 5: been so hidden and I haven't allowed.
- 22:00Speaker 6: People to see me just be human. So it felt.
- 22:03Speaker 7: Perfect instead of query and shield right there and type
- 22:07Speaker 7: of teams.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I do feel like I definitely know you more based
- 22:11Speaker 2: off this project because when we do our little deep
- 22:13Speaker 2: dive I'm listening, I'm driving, I was like, yeah, I
- 22:15Speaker 2: like this, And I say you tricked me because when
- 22:16Speaker 2: I went to the YouTube to catch the video and
- 22:20Speaker 2: I saw the twenty minute conversation, I was like, oh wow,
- 22:23Speaker 2: this is a very open. I think a lot of
- 22:25Speaker 2: artists should try at least to have something similar or
- 22:29Speaker 2: do their own version of it, not to try to copy.
- 22:31Speaker 2: But I think that what you did connected me with
- 22:35Speaker 2: your music. But I think I feel like I know
- 22:37Speaker 2: you a lot more. Yeah, I didn't feel that way before. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:40Speaker 2: so this this was a great job. So I don't
- 22:42Speaker 2: know you and your team, shout out to y'all because
- 22:46Speaker 2: this is a great job in executing what you were
- 22:49Speaker 2: trying to purvey, because I got it.
- 22:52Speaker 6: Yeah. No, we were super intentional, even like the artwork
- 22:55Speaker 6: was crazy.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:57Speaker 7: Who who I did was that.
- 23:00Speaker 6: This artist I've been.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Working with since twenty fifteens from Bulgaria's name is Passo.
- 23:05Speaker 5: He worked with me through the whole process from twenty
- 23:07Speaker 5: twenty till we finished it and put it out like
- 23:11Speaker 5: he was with me the whole four and a half years.
- 23:13Speaker 5: My manager came in like the last year. Who's your manager, Chantel? Yeah,
- 23:20Speaker 5: but yeah, we were just super intentional, even like in
- 23:22Speaker 5: the beginning, they had an idea, you know, based on
- 23:25Speaker 5: what were stream good, what were people like like let's
- 23:27Speaker 5: put the Wayne joint out, Let's put the back of
- 23:30Speaker 5: my bag out. And I sat with it during the holidays.
- 23:33Speaker 5: I was like, it's it don't feel right. So I
- 23:36Speaker 5: called Sherry and I was like, you know, I want
- 23:38Speaker 5: to just talk through this. I'm not saying it has
- 23:41Speaker 5: to be my way, but I just want to share
- 23:42Speaker 5: how I feel. And I was like, people know I
- 23:44Speaker 5: can rap, so leading with the rapping joints is nothing different.
- 23:48Speaker 5: I said, we got to give them something different this time,
- 23:50Speaker 5: and they got to get to know me. And that's
- 23:52Speaker 5: why we changed the order of the songs that came out.
- 23:55Speaker 5: And while we were so intentional about it being like
- 23:57Speaker 5: having a connection.
- 23:58Speaker 9: With people, anybody that you reached out to that you
- 24:03Speaker 9: want to know. The album that didn't make.
- 24:04Speaker 6: It, Yeah, Jill Scott. I wanted her on a ballot
- 24:09Speaker 6: of Homegirls as well as Oh.
- 24:11Speaker 7: My Gosh, I love that song.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Sorry, but I love Baby Tait too.
- 24:15Speaker 5: Now, No, by God, I wanted I wanted to be
- 24:19Speaker 5: like a home Girls plural like okay, you know, I
- 24:23Speaker 5: wanted it Jill Scott's Summer Walker, Ari Lennox and Baby Tape,
- 24:27Speaker 5: you know, just like a joint. I don't know how
- 24:28Speaker 5: that would have worked were in the All Stars, but
- 24:30Speaker 5: that would been good though. Yeah, uh who else old
- 24:35Speaker 5: black pop star?
- 24:37Speaker 6: I had a few ideas.
- 24:38Speaker 5: I hit up Little Sims, but she was on vacation
- 24:41Speaker 5: and I didn't want to interrupt that. I hit up
- 24:43Speaker 5: Tierra Wax, she was finishing her album.
- 24:49Speaker 6: I want to say.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I sent that to Andre three thousand and two, but
- 24:52Speaker 5: you know what space he was in, so uh, that
- 24:56Speaker 5: was really an incomplete song that I hope to finish.
- 24:59Speaker 5: I've landed on miss though, so I really hope we
- 25:02Speaker 5: can do a remix to Black Popstar and get Missy.
- 25:05Speaker 6: But those that's it. Everybody else, you know, we kind
- 25:07Speaker 6: of got.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, man, I really want to get into
- 25:11Speaker 4: these songs when I'm scared because we have a commercial
- 25:13Speaker 4: in like two minutes, so we'll just break real quick.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Let's come back with more rapidy after this. Please don't cry.
- 25:21Speaker 4: First off, how did you get Felicia Rashad on there?
- 25:23Speaker 4: She's all throughout the album, beginning, middle, and end.
- 25:27Speaker 6: Man, Thank god, I really really really wanted her.
- 25:30Speaker 5: I've been a big fan of her since I was young,
- 25:32Speaker 5: Like people asked like, who are the people inspired you?
- 25:35Speaker 6: And she's always on my list.
- 25:37Speaker 5: I got to give that up to my manager, like wow,
- 25:39Speaker 5: I told her I wanted her, and she was like,
- 25:41Speaker 5: I thought it was like really far fetched because I
- 25:43Speaker 5: dreamed big. So I was like, this is what I want,
- 25:46Speaker 5: but we can't get her. Boom boom boom boom. She
- 25:48Speaker 5: was like, we're gonna get her, and she found her manager.
- 25:51Speaker 5: She reached out and they say yes, wow, Like I
- 25:55Speaker 5: was shocked and really grateful that, you know, she wanted
- 25:59Speaker 5: to lend her her gifts and her.
- 26:00Speaker 6: Voice to the project.
- 26:02Speaker 7: Did you meet her?
- 26:03Speaker 5: I still haven't met her. Oh yeah, okay, yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 6: She did that part parts on a voice.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Memo and send it to me and I arranged it
- 26:11Speaker 5: and fill in with my own voice to make the
- 26:14Speaker 5: story complete.
- 26:15Speaker 7: So that intro, what was that exactly.
- 26:17Speaker 6: Is me walking into a hair salon, a hair salon and.
- 26:21Speaker 5: Barbershops as well in the black community, or a safe space,
- 26:24Speaker 5: you know, it's where we go and have conversations in here.
- 26:27Speaker 5: At the time though, doing the project, I was watching
- 26:30Speaker 5: The Matrix a lot, and I was really really intrigued
- 26:32Speaker 5: by the relationship with the Oracle and Neo, and I
- 26:35Speaker 5: felt like I was on my own journey, you know,
- 26:37Speaker 5: like Neo trying to get him to the reality and
- 26:40Speaker 5: escape from the matrix of what this is. And so
- 26:44Speaker 5: I wanted Felicia to serve as my oracle, but I
- 26:46Speaker 5: wanted to make it black and wanted to make it
- 26:48Speaker 5: human and what we all experienced, like you know, going
- 26:51Speaker 5: to the hair salon and bearing our soul and getting
- 26:54Speaker 5: the guys and you know, the advice that we need
- 26:57Speaker 5: to walk the path, and so she give me. She
- 27:00Speaker 5: asked me the questions and you know, it's like pills
- 27:03Speaker 5: and the apple sauce and I got to go out
- 27:04Speaker 5: in the world and really apply it and.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Find my way.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Now I feel like, you know, it was and then
- 27:10Speaker 4: you know the album is riding. But I feel like
- 27:13Speaker 4: when we get to stand tall, that's like when we
- 27:15Speaker 4: start getting to like the meat of like the vulnerability.
- 27:19Speaker 5: Is just I mean, anytime you're doing an album, like
- 27:22Speaker 5: the sequencing, it's a trial and error process, like how
- 27:25Speaker 5: you got all these songs and it's like, Okay, how
- 27:28Speaker 5: were we going to.
- 27:29Speaker 6: Tell the story?
- 27:29Speaker 5: So it goes through a process like nine pitched in
- 27:32Speaker 5: his thoughts, but I decided to do it myself because
- 27:35Speaker 5: I was really intentional about how I wanted the story.
- 27:39Speaker 6: It's different. It's no rules.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Some people sequence albums based on like the first four songs,
- 27:44Speaker 5: one of the best songs, that's gonna keep people, and
- 27:46Speaker 5: then we'll just figure out the rest.
- 27:48Speaker 6: I wanted to tell a story, and that's how our
- 27:51Speaker 6: sequence it.
- 27:52Speaker 5: So the first part half part of the project is
- 27:54Speaker 5: like introspective, like I'm looking at myself. I'm looking at
- 27:58Speaker 5: myself as an artist, in the industry, in the world.
- 28:00Speaker 5: I'm asking these questions. Then the middle part is the heart,
- 28:03Speaker 5: where you get to stand tall and at one time
- 28:05Speaker 5: at three am and loose frocks, and you get to know,
- 28:07Speaker 5: like the emotional side of me what love looks like.
- 28:11Speaker 5: And in the end, it's like you go through all
- 28:14Speaker 5: this thought and then this healing, and you sit in
- 28:16Speaker 5: the fire and let yourself burn and then you heal.
- 28:18Speaker 5: And so that's where you get the back of my
- 28:19Speaker 5: bag and raw, and it's just like I found myself again.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Yeah, uh, that one time? What was that? Can you
- 28:26Speaker 4: break that down with that? Exactly what was about? Because
- 28:29Speaker 4: it's like so many different definitions in my head, but
- 28:32Speaker 4: I just don't really clearly know.
- 28:34Speaker 6: What did you take from?
- 28:36Speaker 4: Was it two different scenarios or like two different things
- 28:39Speaker 4: that happened.
- 28:40Speaker 6: It was one main one.
- 28:41Speaker 5: I just I spoke on another one with right, Like
- 28:45Speaker 5: I'm talking about one experience I had with a woman.
- 28:48Speaker 5: I've dated men all my life and I had one
- 28:50Speaker 5: experience with a woman and it kind of changed my
- 28:52Speaker 5: whole life, Like it was really deep.
- 28:55Speaker 7: But in that I talk about the married man.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, right, and it's just like that was one
- 29:03Speaker 5: thing I said I would never do. But it's like,
- 29:05Speaker 5: how did you get here? And how did you get
- 29:07Speaker 5: in that predicament? And you know, it was really taking
- 29:10Speaker 5: accountability and looking in the mirror, you know, and you know,
- 29:16Speaker 5: just being at one with like, yo, what's up with you?
- 29:19Speaker 4: And you know, it just takes me back to the
- 29:22Speaker 4: conversation you had with Sanai when you're talking about, you know,
- 29:26Speaker 4: the accountability thing, and like everybody's going through something similar
- 29:30Speaker 4: to that. People are dealing with that every day. So
- 29:33Speaker 4: I thought that was super super dope. How you broke
- 29:36Speaker 4: that down?
- 29:37Speaker 2: I like your name number two, Yeah that's number two.
- 29:42Speaker 6: Yeah, but it's the first song, the second track.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you're speaking to yourself.
- 29:48Speaker 6: Yeah, so self reflection and then.
- 29:51Speaker 4: You got Loose Rocks where your grandmother's going through Alzheimer's.
- 29:55Speaker 7: I mean it was your aunt. Okay, I'm sorry.
- 29:58Speaker 4: How was that, like, you know, having to deal with
- 30:02Speaker 4: that in real life and then translating it into music
- 30:05Speaker 4: like you did.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Like this album was just me like really documenting in
- 30:09Speaker 5: real time everything I was feeling and experiencing, and so
- 30:13Speaker 5: like that was a big thing, like she's a big
- 30:15Speaker 5: part of my life. I love her just as deeply
- 30:17Speaker 5: as I love my mother, like they wanted the same
- 30:19Speaker 5: to me, so, you know, having to deal with her
- 30:21Speaker 5: diagnosis and just seeing it take its course. My therapy
- 30:27Speaker 5: is through writing and music, and I thought it was
- 30:29Speaker 5: important because I knew I wasn't the only one dealing
- 30:31Speaker 5: with it, and it was just a way for me
- 30:33Speaker 5: to pour out. I'm a way better writer than I
- 30:36Speaker 5: am like a communicator. I'm still getting better. But I
- 30:40Speaker 5: remember too, like I was in Dallas at s One's
- 30:44Speaker 5: house when I did that record, and I call her
- 30:47Speaker 5: that's what it is. As they ended up joint a
- 30:49Speaker 5: conversation with us, and I just remember, like if you
- 30:53Speaker 5: listen hard enough, you can hear me, like my voice crack,
- 30:56Speaker 5: but I was crying all through that when she was
- 30:58Speaker 5: talking to me. It just hit me are so you know,
- 31:01Speaker 5: it was just it was just honest, and it was
- 31:03Speaker 5: just I feel like albums should be a reflection.
- 31:06Speaker 6: Of your life, and that's just what was going on
- 31:08Speaker 6: in my life.
- 31:09Speaker 5: And I documented it and I love the song, so
- 31:13Speaker 5: you know, I ain't got nothing, you know, deeper than that.
- 31:16Speaker 6: It's just that's how you.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Just said that your communication is like not as good
- 31:23Speaker 4: as your writing. How are you helping that today? Like,
- 31:27Speaker 4: how do you how do you practice better communication.
- 31:31Speaker 6: When I say like I'm not as good.
- 31:32Speaker 5: I'm still a good communicator, but I'm a way better
- 31:35Speaker 5: writer because you know, I get to take time with
- 31:39Speaker 5: my words and really be intentional and think through what
- 31:42Speaker 5: I want to say and how I want to say.
- 31:44Speaker 6: It and how I want to set it up.
- 31:46Speaker 2: So you get it, you know, so your texts are
- 31:48Speaker 2: better than your.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Yeah, though I know some people that don't talk on
- 31:57Speaker 3: the phone at all.
- 31:59Speaker 9: Okay, Yeah, just what you said expressing expressing your feelings
- 32:03Speaker 9: and your emotions.
- 32:05Speaker 6: Like some people be like no, I get it.
- 32:07Speaker 5: But to me, like when I'm talking sometimes my brain
- 32:10Speaker 5: moves so fast I feel like it comes out jumbled.
- 32:13Speaker 6: That's how I feel sometimes.
- 32:15Speaker 2: How does someone get your attention? If are you looking
- 32:18Speaker 2: for love or relationship?
- 32:21Speaker 6: I'm not.
- 32:22Speaker 5: I'm just focusing on me, Okay, you know, Like if
- 32:26Speaker 5: it come and come, if it don't, don't, do.
- 32:28Speaker 2: You check your DMS? Like is there is there any
- 32:31Speaker 2: way that a guy can or whoever can contact you?
- 32:36Speaker 2: Like what is there? Only? I mean, you know, what's
- 32:39Speaker 2: what's the options? Like how can someone you forget the.
- 32:43Speaker 5: Options or the options? You know if you want toss
- 32:47Speaker 5: right there.
- 32:47Speaker 6: If you don't live here, you don't know me.
- 32:49Speaker 5: I check my DMS, but don't I don't see everything,
- 32:52Speaker 5: like I can't. I mean, but then there's some people
- 32:55Speaker 5: I got pushed up on two weeks ago when I
- 32:57Speaker 5: was in New York.
- 32:58Speaker 6: I hadn't done it. I hadn't been pushed up on
- 33:00Speaker 6: like that.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Somebody approached It was very.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Yeah, and now that I appreciated his approach, Like he
- 33:06Speaker 5: came in and first he was like, yo, I'm a
- 33:08Speaker 5: real big fan, you know. I was like, thank you.
- 33:11Speaker 5: And he was like, I got a little crush on
- 33:13Speaker 5: Rhapsody and the Homies. My Homies was there. They was like, oh,
- 33:16Speaker 5: you just got a little crush on Rhapsody.
- 33:18Speaker 6: That's crazy. You should have a big crush, right and
- 33:21Speaker 6: he and he leaned in to it so he was
- 33:24Speaker 6: got in my face. He was like, I mean, I
- 33:26Speaker 6: love to take you out Saturday.
- 33:28Speaker 5: I was like, okay, Like I appreciate that. Said no,
- 33:33Speaker 5: I said, okay, I gave him my number.
- 33:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:35Speaker 6: I liked his energy. It was respectful, but at the
- 33:37Speaker 6: same time.
- 33:38Speaker 3: It was like he wasn't scared.
- 33:40Speaker 6: It was just direct.
- 33:41Speaker 7: Did you'll go out Saturday?
- 33:42Speaker 6: I have an album released week. It wasn't. I had intentions,
- 33:47Speaker 6: but if my.
- 33:48Speaker 5: Schedule was just too crazy, and I told him, you know,
- 33:50Speaker 5: I don't want to come sit with you for thirty minutes,
- 33:53Speaker 5: so you know, next time I'm in New York, but
- 33:55Speaker 5: text me, get to know me, called me.
- 33:58Speaker 6: Call me.
- 33:58Speaker 5: Okay, that's what it was. Don't like yo, what's your
- 34:01Speaker 5: damn it was. It was just real direct, and I appreciated.
- 34:03Speaker 3: That, you know, some grown up type ish.
- 34:06Speaker 6: Yeah, I come from that generation. You know, I don't.
- 34:09Speaker 6: I don't know about the dating apps getting a.
- 34:12Speaker 9: D I see a lot of celebrities are starting to
- 34:15Speaker 9: use dating apps, but they're not having any success.
- 34:17Speaker 6: I would I would never.
- 34:21Speaker 3: You would never do a date to.
- 34:23Speaker 6: Never, never get on dating ap.
- 34:26Speaker 4: Those swipe never left right never You just like an
- 34:29Speaker 4: old school approach.
- 34:31Speaker 6: Yeah, me too.
- 34:33Speaker 7: Mad DM.
- 34:34Speaker 6: But just like the old school.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Yeah, well technically you just want them to say, you know,
- 34:38Speaker 3: just approach me.
- 34:39Speaker 6: You just approached me.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Now a lot of people gonna be approaching you now
- 34:43Speaker 3: watching this interview. Fault.
- 34:47Speaker 6: I'm a cool person.
- 34:48Speaker 4: I got to respectfully reproach or break. So uh, let's
- 34:55Speaker 4: get right back with more Rhapsody.
- 34:58Speaker 8: We'll be right back. Stay tuned more of The Baller
- 35:01Speaker 8: Alert Show. You're listening to a special edition of The
- 35:05Speaker 8: Baller Alert Show.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Yo, Yo, this is Rhapsody and I'm chilling with the
- 35:08Speaker 5: Baller Alert Show on Revolt.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Back with more of the Brother Alert Show. We got
- 35:12Speaker 4: RHP City in the building. Yeah, yes, please don't cry
- 35:15Speaker 4: to enable the album. Man, we're still talking about it.
- 35:17Speaker 4: One of my favorite records is raw Ulawayne Man. When
- 35:21Speaker 4: I say you snapped on that, man, you can't correct.
- 35:25Speaker 6: Thank you man. How long did it take you to
- 35:26Speaker 6: write that? I was really.
- 35:28Speaker 5: Experimenting, you know, and I was like, yo, again, I'm
- 35:30Speaker 5: trying to be more profound. So I approach it like
- 35:32Speaker 5: I just want to do something fun. Ain't trying to
- 35:34Speaker 5: be like super lyrical. And he sent his verse with
- 35:38Speaker 5: different beat. We had a hook a big okay. And
- 35:42Speaker 5: when he sent it back, I was so inspired.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I was like, oh, you rewrote yours.
- 35:47Speaker 7: I absolutely did, and I had no issue that.
- 35:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 35:53Speaker 5: Most people be like, no, yes, I think it more
- 35:55Speaker 5: than once. Okay, I was joking. I was I wrote
- 35:58Speaker 5: it like twenty seven times, and hip hop has made
- 36:00Speaker 5: it the headline. I was like, guys, not being that literal.
- 36:03Speaker 5: I probably wrote it like maybe six or seven times.
- 36:06Speaker 2: But I do a lot of songs, and you do write, right,
- 36:08Speaker 2: Because some artists I see, they go in and they
- 36:10Speaker 2: don't write. They kind of just punish that.
- 36:12Speaker 6: For like a month.
- 36:13Speaker 5: It's not my thing. I really write. I mean some
- 36:17Speaker 5: people just get that.
- 36:18Speaker 2: You're in there and you're reading off of what you wrote,
- 36:20Speaker 2: or do you memorize it and then going down times?
- 36:22Speaker 5: Sometimes I just I write it and I said a
- 36:24Speaker 5: few times, and then I go in the booth and
- 36:26Speaker 5: sometimes I'll sit with it and memorize it and.
- 36:28Speaker 6: Then because I know everybody, Yeah, But most of.
- 36:31Speaker 5: The time, I just write it and sit with it
- 36:33Speaker 5: and learn it enough where I can read it and
- 36:34Speaker 5: still perform it.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Does it take you a long time or it.
- 36:37Speaker 6: Depends on to day. Some things you can write in
- 36:39Speaker 6: twenty minutes.
- 36:40Speaker 5: Some days I spend a month on You know, there's
- 36:43Speaker 5: no writer wrong answer, it's just really what where you
- 36:47Speaker 5: at that in that space?
- 36:48Speaker 7: But you was in a good space on this record,
- 36:51Speaker 7: you were.
- 36:52Speaker 5: Yeah, A lot of these a lot of these were quick.
- 36:54Speaker 5: You know it's there a few things like the raw,
- 36:57Speaker 5: like my raw verse. I really took time on and
- 37:00Speaker 5: I wrote a lot of things I like, but nothing
- 37:02Speaker 5: felt like it, Like it still didn't match his level because.
- 37:07Speaker 6: I wasn't trying to out wrap him.
- 37:08Speaker 7: I was you got to hold your own. No, you
- 37:10Speaker 7: was doing that.
- 37:11Speaker 6: It wouldn't even I just wanted to.
- 37:12Speaker 5: I was so inspired. I wanted to match his level
- 37:15Speaker 5: of how he approached it. I took his flow. I
- 37:17Speaker 5: just used my own word facts.
- 37:19Speaker 4: But you but you, you held your own because sometimes
- 37:21Speaker 4: you know, when you're dealing with a goat like that.
- 37:23Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, your got within your your
- 37:25Speaker 4: by yourself. But you know, when you're dealing with that level,
- 37:28Speaker 4: you can't let nobody just kill you on your own song.
- 37:31Speaker 7: You held your own.
- 37:34Speaker 6: Sometimes you can't.
- 37:35Speaker 7: I mean, no, you can't do that Rhap City, you can't.
- 37:37Speaker 6: I mean I knew I could write something better, That's
- 37:41Speaker 6: all I'm saying.
- 37:41Speaker 7: Like, now you did that. You so humble, But you
- 37:44Speaker 7: did that.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Yeah, we're not gonna I'm not gonna be humble about you.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Right after that song, you got Lonely Woman, And when
- 37:50Speaker 4: I heard that record, I'm like, what in thea Jenet Jackson,
- 37:53Speaker 4: would you mind it is going on?
- 37:57Speaker 7: That is so funny.
- 37:58Speaker 6: I was like, well, I was like, okay, I'm just driving,
- 38:03Speaker 6: all right.
- 38:04Speaker 5: I was showing people every every piece of me that
- 38:07Speaker 5: was human. Okay, yeah, like that was especially. That was
- 38:11Speaker 5: a big section of my life then. So it was
- 38:15Speaker 5: like we just we just recorded it.
- 38:17Speaker 4: But to people who don't know, that's a very self
- 38:19Speaker 4: loving record right there.
- 38:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I love yourself, That's what I'm saying. Deeper than
- 38:26Speaker 5: what you think. But but to it, like I would
- 38:30Speaker 5: see conversations of like raps, you don't talk about sex sex,
- 38:33Speaker 5: And it's just an example of you can talk about
- 38:37Speaker 5: sex in so many different ways. Some of it's gonna
- 38:39Speaker 5: be ratchy and raunchy and right in your face, and
- 38:41Speaker 5: some things are gonna be creative and some things are
- 38:44Speaker 5: gonna be poetic.
- 38:45Speaker 6: And it's like, you know.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Man, the way that you wrap that record, it was
- 38:50Speaker 4: just so creative, Like I've never heard nobody do that
- 38:54Speaker 4: like that.
- 38:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I like to get people an experience.
- 38:58Speaker 7: You know, that's an experience. You know, I'm on a quarius.
- 39:01Speaker 5: So we never liked we like to go left where
- 39:03Speaker 5: everybody else here, like we like to be as creative
- 39:06Speaker 5: as possible. Black Odyssey produced that because originally that song
- 39:13Speaker 5: as One produced it and it was it was more
- 39:15Speaker 5: of like a fun bop joint and it wasn't so
- 39:17Speaker 5: erotic and.
- 39:19Speaker 7: That's Erotic City.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:20Speaker 6: When Black Odyssey.
- 39:21Speaker 5: Heard it, they were like, yo, can we like try
- 39:24Speaker 5: like just a different version because it's so erotic erotic,
- 39:28Speaker 5: but we want we want people to really feel it
- 39:30Speaker 5: and we want them to be in the room with you.
- 39:31Speaker 6: And I was like, all right, let's do it room. Yeah,
- 39:34Speaker 6: Like they like, yo, we need to put like.
- 39:36Speaker 5: Shower in the background, like and steam and we got it.
- 39:40Speaker 6: Like they made it a whole movie.
- 39:42Speaker 7: Yeah, wow, very visual.
- 39:46Speaker 3: You got any favorites on the album?
- 39:48Speaker 5: Yeah, Three Am is probably my favorite song, and it's
- 39:52Speaker 5: not just I love the song, but because it was
- 39:54Speaker 5: an experience in creating with Eric Abadu, So that's for
- 39:58Speaker 5: multiple reasons.
- 39:59Speaker 6: Loose Rocks is another one.
- 40:02Speaker 7: A ballot for the Homegirls so lid though.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Man, it's hall.
- 40:05Speaker 6: I love all the records. They all my babies.
- 40:07Speaker 4: That's Grammy music, man, for real white you could listen
- 40:10Speaker 4: to the whole project with like zero skips I feel
- 40:13Speaker 4: like when you can do something like that, that's like
- 40:15Speaker 4: Grammy music to me.
- 40:17Speaker 6: Damn, thank you.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 40:19Speaker 6: I told people I just had I ain't have no expectations.
- 40:21Speaker 5: I just I made an album for me this time,
- 40:24Speaker 5: and I was like, you know, people either like it
- 40:26Speaker 5: or not. You know, I just wanted to give them
- 40:28Speaker 5: something that was honest, unapologetic.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Yeah, great job.
- 40:32Speaker 6: So you got the tour? Yeah, we announced tour.
- 40:35Speaker 5: Tour kicks off in Europe, first four dates London, Paris, Berlin.
- 40:41Speaker 6: And Amsterdam. And then you excited. I'm super excited. I
- 40:45Speaker 6: haven't been on tour since twenty.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Nineteen before the pandemic.
- 40:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:50Speaker 5: My last show was canceled because we were on Lockdown
- 40:53Speaker 5: two days later, so I didn't even get to have
- 40:55Speaker 5: my homecoming show. And I'm excited to see the experience
- 41:01Speaker 5: and how the music connects with people in the flesh.
- 41:04Speaker 5: Like that's I'm super excited about that. So I can't wait.
- 41:07Speaker 6: But we're doing North America too, So it's eighteen dates.
- 41:11Speaker 7: Oh, just a couple more songs I want to highlight.
- 41:13Speaker 4: From the album never Enough. At the end of the song,
- 41:19Speaker 4: you say my purpose ain't for purchase, is that right?
- 41:22Speaker 4: You say, my purpose ain't for purchase.
- 41:24Speaker 7: Love me or love me not? Now I know what
- 41:28Speaker 7: worth is me?
- 41:31Speaker 6: Right?
- 41:32Speaker 7: How did you come to that conclusion?
- 41:34Speaker 5: I think just again sitting with myself and really, like
- 41:38Speaker 5: I said, I'm plugging from the matrix. Like, yo, you
- 41:43Speaker 5: don't want to sell yourself short because you're not gonna
- 41:45Speaker 5: be happy at the end of the day. So stop
- 41:48Speaker 5: worrying about all these false measurements. And you have to
- 41:51Speaker 5: validate yourself and find value in yourself. And that's just
- 41:55Speaker 5: what it is. So it's like, you know, my authentic self,
- 41:59Speaker 5: my soul, my spirit is knock a purchase and I
- 42:01Speaker 5: can't sell that because I want a nice car or I.
- 42:04Speaker 6: Want to be number one on the radio, like you
- 42:07Speaker 6: gotta do music.
- 42:09Speaker 5: That's the real currency, is peace of mind and happiness.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Are you ever does Rhapsody ever think about having a family?
- 42:17Speaker 6: One day, I thought about it.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I used to it as in past present.
- 42:21Speaker 6: Yeah, so want to have kids like two maybe three.
- 42:26Speaker 5: But I'm I'm at the stage of life where I was,
- 42:28Speaker 5: you know, I'm like, I'm kind of I'm I'm okay
- 42:32Speaker 5: if it happens, it happens. But now I'm just like,
- 42:35Speaker 5: I really like my time. I really like my piece.
- 42:38Speaker 5: I got six pieces and nephews, and I'm like, I'm
- 42:40Speaker 5: like super auntie, and i'd be I love them, but
- 42:43Speaker 5: i'd be like, I'm ready to go to sleep.
- 42:45Speaker 3: So you're a rich auntie. You're a rich auntie that
- 42:48Speaker 3: come over.
- 42:50Speaker 5: Drop it, back off, and do everything that their parents
- 42:52Speaker 5: asked me not to do.
- 42:56Speaker 6: Yeah, I told you not to do that.
- 42:58Speaker 5: I'll be like, I can't help it. So I'm okay,
- 43:00Speaker 5: it's what I'm saying. If it happens, it happens. But
- 43:03Speaker 5: I'm not like I need a family.
- 43:05Speaker 9: I'm sad like you seem like a loner. You seem
- 43:08Speaker 9: like you like being alone. You like your peace.
- 43:10Speaker 5: I have a great balance. I don't think I'm an
- 43:13Speaker 5: introvert at all. I love people. I love hanging out,
- 43:16Speaker 5: but I like chilling. Like I'm not a club girl.
- 43:18Speaker 5: I'm a house party girl.
- 43:20Speaker 9: You know.
- 43:20Speaker 5: I'm a kickback girl. Like I really like people and
- 43:23Speaker 5: I love hanging out.
- 43:24Speaker 7: Man Rhapsody, I'm so proud of you, man, thank you
- 43:27Speaker 7: so humble. But I'm just so happy for you.
- 43:29Speaker 5: You want me to talk my ship, Yeah, every man,
- 43:35Speaker 5: I'm just so happy. Thank you all for seeing me
- 43:37Speaker 5: important to me for.
- 43:38Speaker 4: Sure, Thanks for coming they reporting to us with your
- 43:42Speaker 4: with your albums. Man, like, for real, you changed a
- 43:45Speaker 4: lot of people. That's why I was asking the questions
- 43:46Speaker 4: I asked because you know, you got so many people
- 43:48Speaker 4: who are lost today.
- 43:49Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying.
- 43:50Speaker 4: They looking online just to find an identity, and you
- 43:53Speaker 4: know that it's really within You got to put that
- 43:56Speaker 4: work in on yourself.
- 43:58Speaker 5: If people ask me my intention for this myself, I
- 44:00Speaker 5: wanted to be a lighthouse for people to find it
- 44:02Speaker 5: way back to themselves.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Yeah. I like that.
- 44:05Speaker 7: You can feel it for real for sure.
- 44:07Speaker 4: Please don't cry available right now. Look for Rhapsody on

- 44:27Speaker 3: Wasn't that?
- 44:28Speaker 1: That?
- 44:28Speaker 2: Wasn't that the website the download music? What was it?
- 44:31Speaker 7: It's a music site.
- 44:32Speaker 2: It was the music website, remember the.
- 44:34Speaker 6: One with the H rhapsody. Yeah, joke on me about that.
- 44:38Speaker 6: You name yourself at the music service like shut up, hold.
- 44:43Speaker 4: Only acknowledge is the world right here right there in season?
- 44:48Speaker 3: Baby, you gotta you got called New York back? Right,
- 44:51Speaker 3: I gotta who called New York back? I gotta who
- 44:53Speaker 3: you go to New York spost be going on to
- 44:54Speaker 3: day right.
- 44:59Speaker 5: Because my friends got ahold of the nickname.
- 45:06Speaker 6: I'm not telling you know what it's gonna be.
- 45:11Speaker 5: My friends call him Hancho because they say he looked like.
- 45:14Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, man.
- 45:16Speaker 5: Before we get out of here, we do have a
- 45:18Speaker 5: pep talk, yo, yo, what's up? This is Rahap City.
- 45:20Speaker 6: Look, I just can't even tell you.
- 45:22Speaker 5: Don't be stressing over the things you gotta let go
- 45:25Speaker 5: in life, whether it be love, friendship and security.
- 45:29Speaker 6: You gotta let go.
