- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio, Jeremy and Cody, Welcome to Crosswalk Talk. Thanks
- 0:06Speaker 1: for joining me. Thanks, Lock, were glad to be here.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you met Banks.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jeremy and Cody of the Van Reeves. That's who's joining
- 0:15Speaker 1: us today. They have a new single Outrun You, and
- 0:17Speaker 1: they have one of the most unique bios in Christian
- 0:21Speaker 1: music today. They are third generation construction workers. They are
- 0:25Speaker 1: pastor's kids. There as many pastors kids, but not third
- 0:28Speaker 1: generation construction workers. But they're in the Christian music business
- 0:32Speaker 1: and they have a new they've recently signed with Centricity,
- 0:37Speaker 1: And I want to ask you guys, how did you,
- 0:38Speaker 1: guys discover that you had a talent not just for
- 0:42Speaker 1: construction but for music.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Oh, but yeah, I would say that as far as
- 0:48Speaker 2: construction goes, from the time we were teenagers, we started
- 0:51Speaker 2: going to work with their dad. I went to public
- 0:55Speaker 2: school up until junior high, and then my dad moved
- 0:59Speaker 2: as a pastor to another church and he was always vocational.
- 1:02Speaker 2: After that, just kind of decided to homeschool from that
- 1:06Speaker 2: boyd so that I could work and learn construction and
- 1:08Speaker 2: then do school also in the in the Eden ends
- 1:12Speaker 2: and they've kind of bounced back and forth there, but anyway,
- 1:15Speaker 2: we knew that we wanted to do physical labor. It'd
- 1:19Speaker 2: really enjoyed working with our dad, and I kind of
- 1:21Speaker 2: wanted to carry that on. So I wouldn't say that
- 1:24Speaker 2: construction was a bored talent. It was learned. Okay, we
- 1:28Speaker 2: about the hard work. But as far as music goes,
- 1:33Speaker 2: I played guitar for a band early on. I had
- 1:39Speaker 2: really loved music, grew up loving music, and they wrote
- 1:42Speaker 2: their own songs, so that kind of inspired me to
- 1:46Speaker 2: try to write some of our own songs. And so
- 1:49Speaker 2: that's kind of how it got started for me. And
- 1:51Speaker 2: then Cody came up quickly behind me. I was singing,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and it was evident that he was definitely going to
- 1:57Speaker 2: be a singer. So yeah, just kind of started early on,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I guess in our preteens.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And you guys are balancing construction jobs with with with
- 2:07Speaker 1: your music talents in your music career. How do you
- 2:11Speaker 1: how does your day to day lives in this manual
- 2:14Speaker 1: labor of construction, How does that influence your creative process
- 2:17Speaker 1: and you know, your authenticity as artist? How do those
- 2:20Speaker 1: two mix together? Yeah?
- 2:22Speaker 3: So honestly, our life right now is pretty strange. It
- 2:25Speaker 3: almost feels like we have two blobs going on at
- 2:28Speaker 3: the same time. So you know, Monday through Friday, we're
- 2:31Speaker 3: doing construction. We're usually on a remodel or on a
- 2:35Speaker 3: metal roof or build a new house. And you know,
- 2:38Speaker 3: we usually have like phone calls in the evenail and
- 2:40Speaker 3: are like we're having to take breaks and skip lunch
- 2:42Speaker 3: to do things like that. But you know, I'm super
- 2:46Speaker 3: thankful that we have that opportunity. Honestly, God has allowed
- 2:49Speaker 3: us and and us honestly construction to be able to
- 2:53Speaker 3: allow us to do this construction and being self employed
- 2:57Speaker 3: is Honestly, if we didn't have that, I don't believe
- 2:59Speaker 3: we would have been able to do to do music.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But also just.
- 3:04Speaker 3: You know, for us, we're working men and we go
- 3:07Speaker 3: to work every day, and for us, it inspired us
- 3:10Speaker 3: to to write music and songs that those same kind
- 3:15Speaker 3: of men, you know, the blue collar working men, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 3: working families, just you know, the people out there that
- 3:21Speaker 3: are doing pretty much the same thing we're doing and
- 3:24Speaker 3: writing songs that encourage those kind of people and to
- 3:27Speaker 3: uplift them and also to share the gospel with the
- 3:30Speaker 3: average person who will probably not go listen to some
- 3:34Speaker 3: mainstream stuff. You know, having a unique sound hopefully that
- 3:38Speaker 3: that those people want to listen to. And I think
- 3:40Speaker 3: God uses the sound of the music to therein they
- 3:44Speaker 3: hear the message of the gospel through one of our songs.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I like your social media page bio it says followers
- 3:50Speaker 1: of Jesus and two bros from Texas, And that's that's
- 3:54Speaker 1: kind that's kind of who you guys are from when
- 3:56Speaker 1: I from when I can tell, does everyone that you
- 3:58Speaker 1: work with on the job on your construction where do
- 4:01Speaker 1: they all know that you're singing on the side? Yes, okay?
- 4:06Speaker 1: And how do they how do they react to that?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Do they find it fascinating? Do they want you to
- 4:10Speaker 1: sing on the jobs and maybe entertain everybody?
- 4:14Speaker 2: It's funny a lot of times, you know, people go
- 4:16Speaker 2: to work with us and they'll be like, man, I
- 4:18Speaker 2: was I would think that you guys would be singing
- 4:20Speaker 2: all day.
- 4:21Speaker 3: We're wrapping out.
- 4:23Speaker 2: We got the rest at some point. No, But I
- 4:27Speaker 2: mean a lot of the guys that and people that
- 4:30Speaker 2: we work for, I mean, we'll go I was just
- 4:31Speaker 2: on a job recently, a cabinet job, and they had
- 4:34Speaker 2: no idea that we didn't need it, and they kind
- 4:38Speaker 2: of kept asking questions about you know us traveling and
- 4:42Speaker 2: and you know you traveling all the weekends and ask
- 4:45Speaker 2: them what we do, and they kind of pick until
- 4:47Speaker 2: they figured out that this is what we do. And
- 4:50Speaker 2: and usually I feel like what we do wins of
- 4:54Speaker 2: some esthetic, which with people who may not typically listen
- 4:58Speaker 2: to Christian music. H now they usually give us a shot.
- 5:01Speaker 2: And it's been awesome to it. And I have some
- 5:04Speaker 2: new followers just from jobs that we do or you know,
- 5:07Speaker 2: people that work with us, So it's really neat. I
- 5:10Speaker 2: feel like I uses it.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Your new song, outrun New, let's chat about that for
- 5:23Speaker 1: a second. Outrun You was co written with the Jeff
- 5:25Speaker 1: part of everybody who follows CCM knows that name. What's
- 5:29Speaker 1: the story behind the song? Outrun You?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Oh man, that's such a special song, and that song
- 5:35Speaker 2: right in and of itself was an answer to prayer
- 5:39Speaker 2: and a dream for us. We had never overwritten up
- 5:42Speaker 2: until we signed with Centricity. Only Cody and I were
- 5:46Speaker 2: doing all of the writing, and so I was a
- 5:48Speaker 2: little nervous about going into a songwright. But I had
- 5:52Speaker 2: heard some songs that was kind of down the lane
- 5:55Speaker 2: that we were wanting to write and say in some
- 5:58Speaker 2: of the things that we want to say, and I
- 6:00Speaker 2: noticed that one day kept popping up and it was
- 6:03Speaker 2: Jeff Pardo and I'm intally into a couple of different
- 6:06Speaker 2: people that we were working with at the time, my
- 6:08Speaker 2: block and a producer that helped us while we were independent.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I said, Man, if there's ever a way, I would
- 6:13Speaker 2: love to rock with this guy's at party after we signed.
- 6:17Speaker 2: That ended up being the first Saul ride that we got.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Just by circumstances, nobody knew that we wanted to write
- 6:24Speaker 2: with him even and uh so the Lord kind of
- 6:27Speaker 2: worked that out and we brought an idea into the
- 6:30Speaker 2: saw ride and it was kind of down the alley
- 6:34Speaker 2: of Outrunning You, and we got to talking about our
- 6:37Speaker 2: testimonies and everything. Just it felt like God was moving
- 6:42Speaker 2: us to just share our testimony and uh and how
- 6:45Speaker 2: we came to another Lord and so that turned into
- 6:48Speaker 2: the song out Run You. But it's just a story
- 6:51Speaker 2: of both Mandy Cody's testimony of just how the Lord
- 6:56Speaker 2: really pursued us and some of the most in some
- 6:59Speaker 2: of the most which where we really were running from
- 7:02Speaker 2: the Lord or are we're not necessarily pursuing a relationship
- 7:06Speaker 2: with him, but he met us in the middle of
- 7:09Speaker 2: our darkest moments in our lives, and we came to
- 7:12Speaker 2: know Jesus in the same year and had no idea
- 7:15Speaker 2: that each that each other was struggling with a relationship
- 7:19Speaker 2: with Lord. So, uh, that's that's kind of where it
- 7:21Speaker 2: comes from.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Cody, how would you guys describe your sound?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Is it?
- 7:26Speaker 1: Is it country Christian?
- 7:28Speaker 3: So, you know, being from Texas being country guys, there
- 7:32Speaker 3: there's not as genre we could sing that didn't ultimately
- 7:34Speaker 3: come out country.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yeah, we can't.
- 7:36Speaker 1: We can't really have.
- 7:37Speaker 3: That hot the twang that we got, but yeah, I mean,
- 7:40Speaker 3: I guess we would consider it more like a country
- 7:44Speaker 3: southern rock Christian field because we grew up you know,
- 7:47Speaker 3: we love eighties music and we kind of grew up
- 7:50Speaker 3: listening to some eighties rock, so there's a little bit
- 7:52Speaker 3: of that influence and then just there's some country influence
- 7:56Speaker 3: because we can't hide it. But you know, the messages
- 7:58Speaker 3: of our songs are down the middle. It's you know,
- 8:01Speaker 3: cross centered, gospel, orient songs.
