- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. Prime Minister Mark Kearney and French President
- 0:09Speaker 1: Emmanuel Macron are off to the United Nations this week
- 0:13Speaker 1: to further explore areas in which to collaborate following a
- 0:16Speaker 1: meeting yesterday just a few kilometers off the south coast
- 0:20Speaker 1: of Newfoundland. Carney's visit to St. Pierre-Miquelon was the first
- 0:24Speaker 1: of any Canadian Prime Minister, and each of the leaders
- 0:27Speaker 1: spoke warmly of the cultural and historic ties between the
- 0:30Speaker 1: two countries. Carney and Macron have directed their space agencies,
- 0:35Speaker 1: defense industries, and ministries to develop and share common space infrastructure,
- 0:39Speaker 1: including launch systems and ground reception and control infrastructure. Ottawa
- 0:44Speaker 1: and the province have already pledged funding to NordSpace to
- 0:47Speaker 1: help develop a spaceport in nearby St. Lawrence. A new
- 0:51Speaker 1: strategic partnership was also launched between the Canadian Chamber of
- 0:54Speaker 1: Commerce and French Chamber to build greater business ties and
- 0:58Speaker 1: trade between the two countries.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I want to salute the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and
- 1:03Speaker 2: the Chamber de Commerce et d'Industrie France who are embarking
- 1:09Speaker 2: on a strategic partnership to bring our business communities closer
- 1:13Speaker 2: together and to serve our citizens better.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Newfoundland and Labrador's Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates complaints
- 1:21Speaker 1: against police, has dismissed a case in which a woman
- 1:24Speaker 1: claims she was injured while in police custody in Labrador.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Brian Medour reports.
- 1:30Speaker 3: The woman was removed from her residence in the Happy
- 1:32Speaker 3: Valley Goose Bay area last March to the holding cells
- 1:35Speaker 3: where she was combative. She admitted in her claim that
- 1:39Speaker 3: she had consumed alcohol and cannabis prior to her interaction
- 1:43Speaker 3: with the RCMP officers. and was unable to clearly recall
- 1:47Speaker 3: all of the circumstances that led to police intervention. She
- 1:50Speaker 3: told CERT-NL that she was upset and intoxicated and had
- 1:54Speaker 3: resisted officers' attempts to place her in a cell. She
- 1:58Speaker 3: said she was hanging onto a cell door when an
- 2:01Speaker 3: officer kicked her in the back of the leg, causing
- 2:03Speaker 3: her knee to dislocate and resulting in significant pain. Moreover,
- 2:08Speaker 3: she said the officer laughed and that RCMP declined to
- 2:11Speaker 3: call for emergency medical assistance. Stephen Ring, the director of
- 2:16Speaker 3: the agency, found that the video recordings and witness testimony
- 2:20Speaker 3: did not support the allegations that she was kicked or
- 2:23Speaker 3: that officers laughed at her. He also found that there
- 2:26Speaker 3: was no delay in obtaining medical attention.
- 2:30Speaker 1: The RNC is expected to give local car meets some
- 2:33Speaker 1: added attention following a shocking incident last Thursday on Kenmount Road.
- 2:38Speaker 1: A red Corvette was caught on video doing donuts in
- 2:41Speaker 1: the middle of traffic on Kenmount Road, coming close to
- 2:44Speaker 1: colliding with a number of other vehicles. The incident prompted St.
- 2:48Speaker 1: John's City Councilor Tom Davis to call for a greater
- 2:51Speaker 1: police presence at local car meets. RNC Constable Steph Myers
- 2:56Speaker 1: says public safety is of utmost concern.
- 2:59Speaker 4: We'll give those groups some extra attention just to ensure
- 3:02Speaker 4: public safety, just given the recent driving behaviours twice alone
- 3:07Speaker 4: that we saw from that. However, there are people that
- 3:09Speaker 4: abide by the road, so we're not deterring people from
- 3:12Speaker 4: enjoying their vehicles and meeting up. It's the dangerous driving
- 3:15Speaker 4: behaviours and putting the public at risk that we're concerned with.
- 3:18Speaker 1: The owner of a local trucking company says he'll be
- 3:21Speaker 1: forced to raise prices if oil remains high and the
- 3:24Speaker 1: federal excise tax returns. Ottawa extended its tax relief earlier
- 3:30Speaker 1: this month to early in the new year in an
- 3:32Speaker 1: effort to keep costs down. Akita Equipment General Manager Alex
- 3:36Speaker 1: Driscoll says his company has already had to raise fees
- 3:39Speaker 1: over the past year to keep up with the soaring
- 3:41Speaker 1: cost of fuel. Analysts are warning that prices will climb
- 3:45Speaker 1: even higher due to continued limited supply. Driscoll says like
- 3:50Speaker 1: most businesses, as costs rise, so does the amount they charge.
- 3:55Speaker 5: As this war continued to progress, We've had to slightly
- 3:59Speaker 5: increase and marginally. Do I think that the price has
- 4:03Speaker 5: impacted everything out there? Consumer goods? Absolutely. And I think
- 4:07Speaker 5: that if it continues to escalate, we're going to continue
- 4:10Speaker 5: to see more prices continue to go up.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Google has joined other AI industry giants reporting a recent
- 4:17Speaker 1: security incident involving a new model. The company says Gemini
- 4:21Speaker 1: got unauthorized access to the internet, hacking three real websites
- 4:26Speaker 1: during a test. However, they say the model stopped itself
- 4:30Speaker 1: each time. It's not the first so-called breakout incident from
- 4:34Speaker 1: an AI model. Last week, OpenAI reported six new incidents
- 4:38Speaker 1: and said it was a disturbing and concerning behavior. Ed
- 4:43Speaker 1: Sheeran opened his concert in Philadelphia Saturday with a message
- 4:46Speaker 1: about Gaza during controversy swirling around supporting acts withdrawing from
- 4:51Speaker 1: his latest tour. Sheeran began the concert on stage alone
- 4:55Speaker 1: with no opener and was later joined by other musicians.
- 4:59Speaker 1: The English singer-songwriter said he wants his music and shows
- 5:02Speaker 1: to be about unity and humanity, not politics. Several opening
- 5:07Speaker 1: acts departed from his loop tour after rapper Macklemore was
- 5:10Speaker 1: dropped for making pro-Palestinian comments on stage. That's your news,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland.
