- 2:16of the Todd matter, the burglary that resulted in a shooting. On a
- 2:23tip from an ex convict named or Advance, I came to New York to
- 2:27question one Glory Attorney. My information was that she had in her possession and
- 2:30expensive mink coats part of a seventy five thousand dollars burglary at the Todd home
- 2:35on Long Island. Glory Attorney was shot and seriously wounded by an unknown gunman
- 2:38before I was able to question her about the coat. A description of her
- 2:43assailant and how she had obtained the coat was still to be ascertained when Sergeant
- 2:46Dan Mapes and I arrived on the second floor of emergency hospital. Mister Dollar,
- 2:53yes, I'm doctor King. Oh, yes, this is Sergeant Maps.
- 2:57As she managed to talk. Yet doctor and she may not see before

- 4:15Miss Tierney? Miss Tierney? Bill? Bill? Bill? Shan't you?
- 4:26Yes? Well? What is Bill's full name? Where can we find

- 5:36sure of two things. How Yeah, his name's Bill, and this is
- 5:44the worst whiskey I ever tasted. Uh, there ought to be a law.
- 5:49I think there is, Sergeant. I'm gonna ask you something, baby,
- 5:54Outside of the fact that that girl up there died a few minutes ago
- 5:58and was wearing a st in mink worth eleven thousand dollars that you've been wanting
- 6:02to get your hands on, what about her? How does it strike you
- 6:10She looked like a nice girl. Yeah, she looked like the best kind
- 6:14of girl ever made. What else? What would someone like that be doing
- 6:20in a stolen mink coat? Exactly? What would she be doing with a
- 6:26stolen mink coat? Outside of having herself a time with a guy named Bill
- 6:30who gave it to her, and call it having herself? At times,
- 6:35I'd like to get drunk every bumming pounds named Bill. This is being terrible?
- 6:48Why stuff, I have a drink? You can say that again,
- 6:50baby, Why stuff? I have a drink? Wait? Yes? Should?
- 6:56Yes? Should bring us two marrow a thing on they make him double?
- 6:59Yes? Should right away? Ship. I'm glad to see you aren't
- 7:03fussy. Dolly out of bits, not a lousy bits. You know.
- 7:11I looked at you when you came in my office, and I said to
- 7:14myself, I got a wise acre in my hands. I got a wailing,
- 7:19dealing wise acre who brought himself a little tip, and he's going to
- 7:25keep it all to himself. I said, why do I have to put
- 7:29up with this kind of trouble? Why don't I just pass this bum and
- 7:33the cooler and go about my business. I'm a copper, I got work
- 7:38to do. Why fool with an insurance stick? I said, but I
- 7:44am very happy to see you are at a fussy fellow beaker. Very happy.
- 7:49All right, you made a street stow all my one. Go ahead.
- 7:55Well, I stood in a hospital room and I watched a human being
- 7:58died. It was part of my job, putting a job too. But
- 8:03for myself, I don't like it. If I have to go into why
- 8:07every man's death diminishes me, I'm gonna fall all over myself because I never
- 8:11could go into that kind of stuff. Yeah, I know what you mean,
- 8:15but I'll say this. That girl had died in there was She was
- 8:20a kind of girl I could have kept right on scene. Yes, I'd
- 8:24like very much to have knocked on her door almost any all night sentence.
- 8:30I would have liked that more than I can Cander. She were a stolen
- 8:33mink coat, remember I remember, I remember? Well. I can sit
- 8:37here and feel bad about it, Cally, You sure can. I'll feel
- 8:41bad with you. Look at them early eaters, dollar coming in to drink
- 8:46their dinners. Don't change the subject. I have to What do you got
- 8:52work to do? Pal? Yeah? Here we are gentlemen, as long
- 8:56as it's here. Yeah, cheers, there's yourself. There ought to be
- 9:05a law. You've said that. I remained with Sergeant Makes the rest of
- 9:16the day, as he continued his investigation of the death of Gloria Tyrney in
- 9:18the todd Burglory, the apartment where she'd live, finally yielded some information.
- 9:26Here here it is let us from Robert J. Tyrney in Riverside, California.
- 9:31Looks like her father. Maybe, yeah, I'll have the business office
- 9:33down at headquarters notify him. Hey, what's this picture? Nice looking guy?
- 9:43Love Bill? He loved her all right? Anybody identified this year that
- 9:48missus Stromberg's supposed to be here right now? What time you got fast?
- 9:52She said, she'd be here at six. Hey, sergeant, did you
- 9:54get anything on the bullets? Only? Didn't check with anything in our lab.
- 9:58Ballistic says it was an army could old model pretty good for killing what
- 10:03gun isn't? You're right? Hello? Oh? How long, missus Stromberg.
- 10:07We've been waiting for you come in. Oh well, mister dollars,
- 10:11Hi, do I have to answer any more questions? Oh? A couple,
- 10:15if you don't mind, I'm just all worn out. I can't get
- 10:18over this terrible thing happening to Gloria. Did you ever find out about her
- 10:22family? We're going to contact them right now. Seems they live in Riverside,
- 10:28California. Yes, yes, I believe that's what she said. I
- 10:31want to ask you one question, Missus Stromberg. Take a look at this
- 10:33picture. Yes you know him? Oh? Yes, that's Bill, the
- 10:39man Glory Attorney's been going out with these last few months. Yes, the
- 10:41man who drives the black Cadillac. Yes, the cat like Oh I wish
- 10:46I could tell you his full name. Did he do this terrible thing?
- 10:50It looks like it, Missus strombergon, Oh, dear, have you arrested
- 10:54him yet? We haven't found him yet. Well, I hope you do.
- 10:56I hope you clear this up for for the office to get me here.
- 11:01What about her things? Her family will probably take charge as soon as
- 11:05they're contact. Oh poor girl, poor girl, so alone now? Yeah,
- 11:13and missus Stromberg. Did Gloria Tyrney ever mention to you that she'd been
- 11:16married? Married? Gloria? Yeah? Why no? She never mentioned it
- 11:22was she married in the state of New York in nineteen fifty one, divorced
- 11:26in nineteen fifty three. Routine check of ital statistics. What was her husband's
- 11:31name, Bill Bill Powers? Sergeant Maps requested immediate file checks on William B.
- 11:39Powers, the ex husband of Gloriattorney Romney, learned he had no criminal
- 11:43record in the state of New York. His home address was up in Westchester
- 11:46County, one of the suburbs of the big city. I drove out there
- 11:50with Sergeant Maps. Oh what's this all about? You know a woman named
- 11:56Gloria tyr name is to Powers. Well, sure we will married once?
- 12:00Why she was shot to death last night? Mister Powers, Glory? Yeah,
- 12:07are you sure we're sure? Shot? Oh? What what happened?
- 12:16How could a thing like that happen? That's what we're trying to find out.
- 12:18Mister Powers, I can't believe it. Glory, have you seen it
- 12:26lately? Have you back? Yes? I saw her last week. We
- 12:33had a drink together. Are you sure it's Glory? We'd make sure before
- 12:37we came here with news like that. That's right, mister Dollar here isn't
- 12:41a policeman. He's an insurance investigator. Miss Turney was wearing a stolen mink
- 12:46coat when it happened stolen? Are you sure? We're sure? We checked
- 12:50everything. Glory would never steal anything. She was a fine girl, wonderful
- 12:56girl, full lever. Let marriage go on the rocks. Can you come
- 13:01with us, mister Powers. We'd like an identification? Well, oh uh,
- 13:07yes, of course, I'll get my cold. Excuse me, I
- 13:13want to smoke, Jenny. Yeah, thanks, Well he isn't a burden
- 13:20the picture, Jenny, Nah, not at all? Still he what is
- 13:26it? Jenny? You check the driveway out there? No, take a
- 13:31look the side window. Oh yeah, fifty five Cadillac coup de Ville.
- 13:39Sure as such a from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Deller, long
- 14:01distance operator Wilmington, Delaware is calling you. Okay, go ahead, please,
- 14:05Johnny, I do well, this is Don Freed. What's happening there?
- 14:09Your expenses are running away up and we haven't gotten a report from you.
- 14:13I haven't too busy. What's that supposed to mean? That's supposed to
- 14:16mean that the tip I got was good and it was bad. Yes,
- 14:18Gloria Tierney one two or three one, he's fifty seventh Street, had a
- 14:22mink coat that was stolen from the Tata State. No, she didn't tell
- 14:24me much about it because she got herself shot down on the street last night.
- 14:28Yes, I'm working with the police here trying to find out how she
- 14:31comes by the coat. I listen. An hour ago, I went out
- 14:33to see an ex husband of hers. His name's Bill Powers, and he
- 14:35seems to be the bird we're looking for. You know what he did.
- 14:39He cried and blubbered all the way down to the morgue, and he's in
- 14:41there right now. I'm making a positive identification. I don't blame him for
- 14:46crying. So what's new with you, mister expense accountant? Boy? You're
- 14:50a real man easter today, aren't you? I sure I am? By
- 15:01tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the band
- 15:05with the action packed expense account America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator Os Trulli Johnny Dollar
- 15:20expense accounts of it of my special investigator, Johnny Dollar to a four state
- 15:24insurance company Wilmington, Delaware. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my
- 15:28investigation of the Todd Matter. Expense account Item A twenty cents aspirin. I
- 15:35brought them in a drug store across the street from the Morgue. I figure
- 15:37I needed them on the way down in the police car. The ex husband
- 15:41of Gloria Tierney gave us a very little information about our activities up until the
- 15:46time of a deck. After he made the identification, we all walked across
- 15:48the street. Expense account Item nine thirty cents three cups of coffee. Sergeant
- 15:54WAPs build Powers and myself Powers cried awhile then straightened out somewhat. I hope
- 16:00you get whoever whoever did this terrible thing, Sarge. I hope you'll get
- 16:07him real fast. Are you sure went to mister Powers? Why would anybody
- 16:11do that? To glory? Why? Maybe you can help us answer that?
- 16:15You hope you can, mister Powers. Oh you you're just interested in
- 16:21that coach she was wearing. Well, mister, I don't believe she was
- 16:23wearing the stolen coat. What do you think of that? I think that's
- 16:26a pretty fair way to think right now. But it's not very practical since
- 16:30we already have proof that it is a stolen for her and that she was
- 16:33wearing it. Yeah, how about some more coffee? That's cold? Oh
- 16:38no, Look, we're just trying for the facts of the matter, mister
- 16:41Powers. I saw a glory attorney. I know what kind of a person
- 16:45she was. We have to start somewhere. You can understand that. I
- 16:48suppose you told us you saw her last week for a drink. Head's right.
- 16:53Have you been seeing her right along? Yeah? Sure, even though
- 16:56you were divorced a year or so ago. Yeah, yeah. Did you
- 17:02know she's been going with someone else too? Yeah? Bill, Yeah,
- 17:07Bill Chambers. That his name, Bill Chambers. But yeah, I don't
- 17:11know him, but she talked about him a lot. Yeah, like a
- 17:15look at this picture? Is this him? Yeah? That's him? I
- 17:19thought you knew. You're sure this is him? Oh? Sure. The
- 17:22picture was in her apartment. I've seen it there. One day. I
- 17:26asked her who he was, and Gloria told me about What did she tell
- 17:30you about him? Just said she was going out with him. Oh,
- 17:33she told me that he asked her to marry him. She said he had
- 17:37a lot of money. Anything else. Oh, I don't know that.
- 17:42She haven't imagine where he works, No, what kind of work he does?
- 17:47Do you know where we can get in touch with? No? No,
- 17:48I don't know that either. I can't help you. I only know
- 17:52she's been going out with I don't get this. You and her were divorced,
- 17:56but you kept on seeing her because she got this new boy friend.
- 18:00And she told you things like that, Yeah, funny in it. Where'd
- 18:07you bust up? Oh? Oh, listen that kids stuff. I suppose
- 18:18spat over, well, listen that. I don't know what exactly. Anyway,
- 18:22we were going to straighten it out. We were going to be married
- 18:26again. Oh what about this billed Chambers. Oh, she didn't want to
- 18:27marry him. She wanted to marry me again. She told me when day
- 18:33before yesterday she said she said she would marry me. Now she's dead.
- 18:42You know what kind of a car Chambers drives? Oh? Oh, cattle,
- 18:49honey and all that. Oh, she told me about his car.
- 18:53Another thing. I went out and I bought one myself, just like his.
- 18:59I thought it might do me some good word or we were crazy WorldWind.
- 19:03Where were you last night? Home? Can you prove it? Oh?
- 19:07Yeah, oh all night? I was home while she was out getting
- 19:18herself killed. The name William Chambers was checked through the New York Police files.
- 19:27Twenty four persons more or less fit the general description of the suspect.
- 19:32It took two days for Sergeant Maps and his men to track down all the
- 19:34leads. Either Missus Stromberg or Bill Powers could identify any of them and all
- 19:40points. Bulletin was issue describing the suspect in this car, same results.
- 19:42Nothing. On the third day, the pawn shop detail turned up two items
- 19:47that had been taken on the todd burglary. There they are Jenny, uh
- 19:52huh watching a ring Todd lost a watch and a ring with a lot of
- 19:56other stuff based members in the watch. Check out the ring in Grave.
- 20:00Yeah? Why were they picked up shop on Third Street? The proprietor bought
- 20:04them yesterday. A man who signed the buye book used the name James A
- 20:08Jenny. Yeah. Given a dress on Polk Street that was phony too.
- 20:14We got a good description from the proprietor. It's Chambers right down the line.
- 20:18Oh. Then he was still in town yesterday yesterday. Yeah, but
- 20:21this that's been in a hot sheet for a long time. If he's had
- 20:23any experience at all, he knew he was taking a chance trying to unload
- 20:26it. Probably trying to raise money to get out of town. What I
- 20:30was thinking, if he keeps on trying to raise money and unload all these
- 20:33things, I'll have all the loud back. If he keeps on trying,
- 20:36We'll keep on trying. Jenny, We're gonna get this lady so I can
- 20:41mate where. Okay, he does need money. They found his car used
- 20:48carl Out up in the Bronx. He sold it at ten o'clock this morning,
- 20:56I think used car lot. We learned that the man answered the description
- 21:00of William Chambers had driven in that morning and offered a black fifty five CATALC
- 21:03for sale. He used Carlott manager had finally settled on a price and made
- 21:07out a check. He reported the Chambers seemed extremely nervous and anxious to make
- 21:11a quick deal. The car was impounded and examined. A full set of
- 21:15fingerprints on the steering wheel and dashboard gave us a positive identification on William Chambers.
- 21:19Oh what do you know? William Charles, William Carles, William Charles,
- 21:25Walter Cameron one, two, three, seven aliases, He'll name William
- 21:30Charles, male, Caucasian, age thirty three, one seventy eight six one
- 21:34let's see fourteen arrests, two convictions, both car sets. Quite a boy.
- 21:41Well, we got a real tag on him now. Shouldn't be long
- 21:44before he picked him up. Doesn't look like a killer, does he?
- 21:48Jenny, I don't know what's the killer is supposed to look like a search
- 21:56for William Charles continue associates and runs listed in this criminal four contacted and questioned.
- 22:03All denied knowledge of his whereabouts. In the meantime, two more pieces
- 22:07of stolen property connected with a Todd burglary were recovered by the porn shop.
- 22:10Two expense account adem ten three dollars. One telegram to four State Insurance in
- 22:17Wilmington, explaining our progress in the case and listing the recovered items. Johnny
- 22:23Dollar, you and just didn't find n Bill Charles? Who is this my
- 22:27name? Never mind? Do you want him? And don't sure I want
- 22:32him. I'm a traps restaurant on forty second off Broadway when you meet me,
- 22:36Yeah, fifteen minutes. I'm in a gray suit, pinstripe. I'll
- 22:38be sitting alone. I'll watch for you. Expense account atem eleven seventy five
- 22:45cents cab fare from my hotel to Shraft's restaurant. A small, pretty brunette
- 22:51woman in nice clothes was seated at the table all along. She looked more
- 22:55like a housewife on a shopping tour than someone who might be connected with a
- 22:57bandit and a killer. Sit down, mister dollar. Okay, sure,
- 23:03hiss. A reward posted for William Charles. Isn't there for that Todd matter?
- 23:07That's right? Five thousand dollars? Well, I get it if I
- 23:11turn him over to the police. Not all of it. Half of it
- 23:14goes to an ex convict or tipped me off in the first place. Yes,
- 23:17you don't seem very anxious to get in. We're anxious. That's the
- 23:19way it is. This other half of the five thousand spoken. I want
- 23:22to get something else straight. What happens to me? What do you mean?
- 23:26I've known he had a part in that Todd matter for a long while.
- 23:29I haven't said anything. Does that make me a party to it or
- 23:32something? I don't know. Well, this is going to get me in
- 23:33trouble. I have to spend the money for lawyers to keep out of jail.
- 23:36I don't want any part of it. All right, my company will
- 23:40cover that part now, worst Charls not's so fast. I'm got to have
- 23:42something in writing, something that says your insurance company will pay me a reward
- 23:47and give me help if I get in trouble. I'll talk to him.
- 23:48I'm thinking of the future. I'm gonna have one once this is over,
- 23:53are you yes, yes, I am. How long will it take you
- 23:57to arrange this? But I are I can do it by phone. I
- 24:00guess it'll be fine. Who are you, Melvill Charles his wife? Yes,
- 24:07that's right. Twenty five hundred dollars. Not much for a husband.
- 24:12He's not much of a husband. He was once then he had to give
- 24:17away a mink coat and spend time away from me. I see, I
- 24:21doubt it. You people hardly ever see anything we try. You make the
- 24:23arrangements. I'll meet you again and say two hours two hours. I gave
- 24:32her a fifty seconds start before I left the table. When I got on
- 24:34the street, I was just in time to see her climb into a cab.
- 24:37I was trying to hail one to follow her when a black coupe pull
- 24:40up to the curbing. Hey, mate, sit in the life change.
- 24:48That is Melvill Charles in that cab up there. Yeah, that's who she
- 24:52said she was. She wants to sell your husband for the reward. Doesn't
- 24:55she have what's a delay? She wants to be sure she'll be handled right,
- 24:57the money and all. See how to you get in on this very
- 25:00dirty trick? Baby? Everybody might men questioned about Charles mentioned your name,
- 25:04where you were staying in what interest the insurance company had in this matter?
- 25:08Somebody was bound to look up, especially missus Childs. So we've kept an
- 25:12eye on you. Now where are we searching? Her name was Melva Taylor
- 25:15before she married Charles. Her old man had a pot of money back in
- 25:18Minnesota, but she couldn't keep out of trouble and got herself disinherited money.
- 25:23He's always been a problem. It's not everybody's problem, not the way it
- 25:26is with her. You should see her record. How much offer half.
- 25:30They haven't spoken for twenty five hundred dollars. Charles is no good to her.
- 25:34Now if he sticks his head out, he get caught, so she
- 25:37might as well cash in what she can on him. Nice people, it's
- 25:41wow. Oh she's leaving a camp. Get out of the corner and part
- 25:47Can you see her? She went into the apartment building. Let's go which
- 25:53apartment? Johnny? There we go right? Oh? Where it's me just
- 26:03a minute time? Now? What Before I went down? I heard it
- 26:11go off for a couple more times. It must have been six inches from
- 26:17my head. My eyes couldn't see that, my feet couldn't move, but
- 26:22I couldn't hear Ny. Hold on, hold on, baby, There'll be
- 26:44another exciting episode in our story of the Todd Matter tomorrow. Tomorrow. Well,
- 26:48there are times when seventy five thousand dollars worth of stealing isn't worth a
- 26:52plug? Nickel, join us, won't you? Yours truly? Johnny Dollar?
- 27:08Yours Truly? Johnny Doller, starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in Hollywood.
- 27:12Written by John Dawson, It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone.
- 27:18Be sure and join us tomorrow night, same time and station for the next
- 27:22extciting episode of Yours truly Johnny Doller, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back will a
- 28:32fairly dramatic conclusion to part four, which definitely leaves me eager to listen to
- 28:41the next part. Just nicely down. I was kind of confused on who
- 28:48got shot, and I was first of all afraid it was the police sergeant,
