- 0:21Speaker 1: with Parley Bear as Chester, Georgia Ellis as Kitty, and
- 0:25Speaker 1: Howard McNear as Doc. Les Crutchfield wrote the script, revisiting
- 0:30Speaker 1: his January 17th, 1953 Gunsmoke story, Paid Killer, and Norman
- 0:36Speaker 1: MacDonald produced the broadcast. Now Gunsmoke, Paid Killer reused script.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Here is the original broadcast.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Gunsmoke Around Dodge City and in the territory on west,
- 0:55Speaker 2: there's just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 0:59Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of Gunsmoke.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Gunsmoke Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violent
- 1:25Speaker 2: that moved west with young America. And the story of
- 1:28Speaker 2: a man who moved with it.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:35Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:42Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 1:44Speaker 5: Gunsmoke Hey.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Hey!
- 2:00Speaker 4: Over here. Wasn't the boy who said you wanted to
- 2:06Speaker 4: see me? Yeah. Well, it better be important, mister.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I don't make a habit of coming running with some
- 2:12Speaker 3: saddle-punk whistles.
- 2:14Speaker 6: Yeah, maybe you hadn't ought to make a habit of
- 2:16Speaker 6: calling people saddle-punks.
- 2:19Speaker 4: No offense.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Just an expression.
- 2:22Speaker 7: Sure.
- 2:25Speaker 6: I came up from the Pecos country. Been here in
- 2:28Speaker 6: Dodge about a week. Maybe you've seen me around.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I've seen you.
- 2:33Speaker 7: I've been talking to people.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Oh.
- 2:37Speaker 6: Everybody tells me you was a big shot back in Abilene.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Had all the games sold up. Three or four saloons
- 2:43Speaker 6: paying off. Couple of hotels and so on. Then the
- 2:47Speaker 6: boom busted and you come here. Since you've been here,
- 2:50Speaker 6: you got no ways.
- 2:53Speaker 7: You know why?
- 2:55Speaker 4: You're talking. You tell me why. Dylan.
- 2:57Speaker 7: A fella named Matt Dylan. You tried to scare him,
- 3:01Speaker 7: and he wouldn't scare you. So you tried to buy him.
- 3:04Speaker 7: He wouldn't buy.
- 3:05Speaker 6: Tried breaking him, and he wouldn't break.
- 3:08Speaker 3: So....
- 3:11Speaker 6: Be worth a thousand dollars to you if I kill him?
- 3:18Speaker 3: It might. All right.
- 3:20Speaker 7: Get it in gold. Keep it handy. Am I.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Hired? Yeah. Yeah, you're hired. You know, Chester, you haven't
- 3:49Speaker 3: said three words in the last 20 minutes. That's not
- 3:51Speaker 3: like you.
- 3:52Speaker 8: Well....
- 3:56Speaker 4: Mr.
- 3:56Speaker 9: Dillon, did you ever get a funny feeling that somebody
- 4:00Speaker 9: was keeping an.
- 4:01Speaker 8: Eye on you?
- 4:02Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, but.
- 4:03Speaker 8: Well, I got one right now.
- 4:05Speaker 3: You know, Chester, I think you got a touch of
- 4:07Speaker 3: the heebie-jeebies. As far as I can see, there's nobody
- 4:11Speaker 3: in the whole place paying any attention to us.
- 4:13Speaker 9: Somebody is. I had the same feeling the day of
- 4:16Speaker 9: the Butler brothers come back to Sanford.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:19Speaker 8: I didn't even know they was in town, but I
- 4:21Speaker 8: knew somebody was getting ready to call us. And about
- 4:24Speaker 8: six o'clock that evening, they made their play. Do you remember?
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember.
- 4:29Speaker 8: I was one of the pallbearers next day.
- 4:32Speaker 9: Well, it's the same doggone thing right now.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You know, I think you've got the wind up over nothing, Chester.
- 4:42Speaker 3: That town's never been quieter. Jail's been empty for two weeks.
- 4:47Speaker 3: The only new faces around is that bunch of trail
- 4:49Speaker 3: drivers that came up from the Pecos. They're all strangers.
- 4:53Speaker 8: Oh, Marshal.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Hey, B.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Huh?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Been looking all over for you. Oh, hiya, Billy.
- 4:59Speaker 10: I waited over at the jail for nine hours to
- 5:02Speaker 10: an hour.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I got to talk to you, Marshal.
- 5:05Speaker 3: You know, Billy, every time I've given you money, you've
- 5:07Speaker 3: bought yourself a bottle and stayed blind drunk for two days.
- 5:11Speaker 10: Well, it ain't money this time, Marshal. I got something
- 5:14Speaker 10: to tell you.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Oh, what?
- 5:16Speaker 8: Something I heard.
- 5:18Speaker 10: There's a couple of fellas talking over by the liver stable.
- 5:21Speaker 10: He didn't see me. I was back.
- 5:23Speaker 3: At the water crawl.
- 5:24Speaker 10: Sort of, well, resting, you might say.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Well, you know how it is, Marshal. Yeah, I know.
- 5:31Speaker 3: A man gets dry in his prairie country. What were
- 5:34Speaker 3: they talking about, Billy? About you.
- 5:37Speaker 10: One of them offered to kill you for a thousand
- 5:39Speaker 10: dollars in gold, and the.
- 5:41Speaker 8: Other one took him up on it.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Oh.
- 5:43Speaker 8: Who were they, Billy? No, sir.
- 5:51Speaker 10: It is dark, and I didn't recognize their voices. They
- 5:55Speaker 10: was already there when I woke up, and they left
- 5:57Speaker 10: right after that.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Well, uh, maybe it was some kind of a joke.
- 6:05Speaker 10: It didn't sound that way to me.
- 6:07Speaker 8: It ain't no joke, Mr.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Dillon.
- 6:09Speaker 9: I told you I felt it. There's somebody around who's
- 6:12Speaker 9: been hired to kill you. Can you figure who'd want
- 6:25Speaker 9: to do such a thing, Mr.
- 6:26Speaker 7: Dillon?
- 6:26Speaker 3: Well, I can figure a dozen or two, Chester.
- 6:29Speaker 8: Well, I mean.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Here we are. Come on.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Well, good morning, Marshal.
- 6:40Speaker 6: I haven't seen you since the robbery last month.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Attempted robbery, Mr.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Barkin.
- 6:44Speaker 6: So it was, thanks to you. Well, Marshal, the bank's
- 6:47Speaker 6: at your service.
- 6:47Speaker 7: What can I do for you?
- 6:49Speaker 3: Give me some information, if you will. Well, if it
- 6:51Speaker 3: isn't confidential. It is, but I want it anyway.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Well, I hardly know what to say. Perhaps we'd better
- 6:58Speaker 6: step into my office.
- 6:59Speaker 3: All right. This way, gentlemen. Thank you.
- 7:07Speaker 6: Now, just what was it you wanted to know?
- 7:09Speaker 3: I want to know whether one of your customers has
- 7:13Speaker 3: drawn a thousand dollars in gold from the bank in
- 7:16Speaker 3: the last few days. Any particular person in mind? Oh,
- 7:19Speaker 3: that's what I want to find out.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Well, I hope this won't go any farther, Marshal.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Who was it, Mr.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Buchan?
- 7:25Speaker 6: I certainly wish to make it clear that I don't
- 7:26Speaker 6: approve of this man, but after all, he is a
- 7:28Speaker 6: good customer.
- 7:29Speaker 4: It's not my place.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. Who was it?
- 7:33Speaker 6: Lawson Hale. Lawson Hale? He took the gold out just
- 7:37Speaker 6: this morning, as a matter of fact. Said he was
- 7:39Speaker 6: working on a cattle deal of some sort. I do
- 7:41Speaker 6: hope you regard this as confidential, gentlemen.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, sure. Well, Chester, we know who one of them
- 7:49Speaker 3: is now.
- 7:50Speaker 8: But who's the other? The one who's actually going to
- 7:52Speaker 8: do it?
- 7:53Speaker 3: Some punk who wants a thousand dollars bad. Doesn't care
- 7:58Speaker 3: much how he gets it.
- 7:59Speaker 8: That sure don't narrow it down any. I know. Sure
- 8:17Speaker 8: is quiet tonight, Mr. Jones.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Ain't many people out.
- 8:24Speaker 3: No, not many.
- 8:26Speaker 9: That moon's throwing quite a bit of light.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 8:31Speaker 3: There goes to this.
- 8:33Speaker 9: Kindly makes a target out of a man.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it does, kind of.
- 8:41Speaker 9: If somebody was out to shoot somebody, this would sure
- 8:44Speaker 9: be a good night for it.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I suppose so. Mr.
- 8:49Speaker 8: Dillon, would you mind if I make a comment?
- 8:53Speaker 3: I thought that's what you were doing, Chester.
- 8:55Speaker 9: Let's go on back to jail and stay off the streets.
- 8:57Speaker 9: This way, you're just asking for it.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Look, Chester, if it's gonna come, it'll come. I'd rather
- 9:02Speaker 3: meet it halfway than to sit and wait for it.
- 9:05Speaker 8: Asking for it, asking for it, that's what you're doing.
- 9:07Speaker 3: It's been two days now, Chester. It gets on your nerves.
- 9:13Speaker 3: When you go out to bring a man in, you
- 9:15Speaker 3: know you may have trouble and you're ready for it, but.
- 9:20Speaker 8: But this way, it's... I understand what you're doing. Kindly
- 9:29Speaker 8: bothers a man.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Let's walk on down to the Long Ranch.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Hello, Kitty.
- 9:49Speaker 8: Oh, it's good to see you, ma'am.
- 9:51Speaker 10: You've been avoiding.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Us the last couple of days.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Of days.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Been busy, Kitty. Want to sit down? I don't think so.
- 10:06Speaker 8: Not right now, anyway. Something bothering you, Matt?
- 10:09Speaker 4: Huh?
- 10:10Speaker 3: Bothering me?
- 10:11Speaker 4: Well, yes.
- 10:12Speaker 8: You seem to be on edge about something. Mr. Dillon.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Yeah, what?
- 10:16Speaker 8: Lawson Hale just come in.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Down in the bar there.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Maybe I ought to have a talk with him, Chester.
- 10:26Speaker 8: Well, that's one way.
- 10:29Speaker 3: No, that's the one I haven't tried yet. Excuse me, Kitty. Sure, Matt.
- 10:34Speaker 8: Matt, now you be careful.
- 10:36Speaker 4: And I had it right in the palm of my hand.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Bit of the trail driving hit that town. The boys
- 10:45Speaker 4: grab her pay and they'd head straight for one of the.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Something I can do for you.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:54Speaker 3: I want to talk to you, Hale.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Well, I don't see nothing stopping you.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Let's move down the bar a ways.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Sorry, but I'm fine right here.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Why don't we move down the bar a ways?
- 11:06Speaker 4: If it's that important to you.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Pardon me, boys.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Come back and finish that story. Is this far enough?
- 11:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's far enough. I understand you hired yourself a gunman.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And you sent him out to get me. You've offered
- 11:32Speaker 3: him $ 1, 000 in gold. I don't know what you're talking about, Bill.
- 11:38Speaker 3: You wouldn't care to tell me his name, would you?
- 11:40Speaker 4: No, I don't think so, because, you see, I don't
- 11:43Speaker 4: know nothing about it.
- 11:44Speaker 3: What's he waiting for? He's had two days now, and
- 11:46Speaker 3: he hasn't made a move. Well, like I said... Why
- 11:47Speaker 3: don't you do the job, Hale? You're wearing a gun.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Maybe you can save yourself some money.
- 11:59Speaker 3: I've got no.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Quarrel with you.
- 12:00Speaker 3: You mean you're yellow? Scared to call your own place?
- 12:04Speaker 3: I said I've got a weaseling no-gut cow at Hale.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I'll let that ride for the time being.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought you wouldn't. Come on, Chester, let's get
- 12:25Speaker 3: some fresh air.
- 12:25Speaker 6: All right, sir.
- 12:26Speaker 3: See you later, Kitty.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Doc.
- 12:28Speaker 9: All right, man.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Well, I guess he just.
- 12:32Speaker 6: Ain't the kind to take chances, Mr.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Jones.
- 12:36Speaker 3: He doesn't need to, Chester. He's got a hair killer
- 12:39Speaker 3: problem somewhere around. If I only knew who he'd hired,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I could force the play myself. This business is... Having
- 12:52Speaker 3: to leave it up to the other man.
- 12:55Speaker 8: Over there by the stable.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw the flash.
- 13:00Speaker 8: Reckon you got him, Mr.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Dillon?
- 13:01Speaker 3: I don't know. Let's move in. Now watch yourself. He
- 13:06Speaker 3: may be playing possum.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 13:13Speaker 8: The flash was right here by the corner.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Well... That's that. Yeah.
- 13:24Speaker 8: Looks like he got away.
- 13:25Speaker 5: He's gone, all right.
- 13:29Speaker 8: Took one shot and we're on for cover.
- 13:33Speaker 3: But he'll be back.
- 13:34Speaker 8: The End I think that fire feels real good.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 9: The old jail seems kind of cozy. Anyway, it's a
- 14:00Speaker 9: lot better than crawling down the street waiting for somebody
- 14:02Speaker 9: to put a bullet in your back.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Chester! Will you stop squeaking in that chair?
- 14:08Speaker 5: Sorry, Mr.
- 14:11Speaker 8: Dillon.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Two more days gone by and he hasn't made another move.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Uh.
- 14:19Speaker 9: That cottonwood sure burns up fast. I guess I better
- 14:22Speaker 9: shake down the stove and throw another.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Wait a minute.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Wait a minute.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Wait a minute.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Might be a way at that, Chester. Loss on the hail.
- 14:28Speaker 3: That's the only fact we're sure of. Loss on the hail.
- 14:31Speaker 8: It'll be kind of hard to prove anything, Mr.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Jones.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Who said anything about proving it? I got an idea.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Come on. I've been thinking, Mr.
- 14:47Speaker 8: Dunn, you ain't got no evidence. To arrest, hell, I mean.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I know, but I can scare him. If I figure
- 14:54Speaker 3: him right, I think he'll scare easy.
- 14:55Speaker 9: Maybe so, but all the same.
- 14:57Speaker 3: There he is now, Chester. Just came out of the
- 15:00Speaker 3: long branch. Hanging around for the free drinks. There's not
- 15:07Speaker 3: an ounce of nerve in a dozen like that.
- 15:12Speaker 8: Come on.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Hale.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Hold it, Hale, right where you are.
- 15:22Speaker 4: What seems to be the trouble now?
- 15:23Speaker 3: No trouble unless you want to make some. You're under arrest. I.
- 15:28Speaker 8: What for?
- 15:29Speaker 3: I'll think of something. You're taking me in without even
- 15:33Speaker 3: making a charge.
- 15:34Speaker 4: I'll remind you there's witnesses here.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yeah, so I noticed. When they're not hanging around you,
- 15:38Speaker 3: they're after somebody else. What have you done, Hale? Hired them, too?
- 15:41Speaker 4: I asked you what the charge was, Marshal.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Vagrancy.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Vagrancy?
- 15:46Speaker 3: As far as I know, you've never had any visible
- 15:48Speaker 3: means of support as long as you've been in that city.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I'll match any dollar of yours with a hundred better ones.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Fine. That'll help pass the time.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Now, look at here, Marshal. Shut up.
- 15:57Speaker 3: You think you... All right, boys, break it up. The
- 15:59Speaker 3: party's over. You had your last free drink out of
- 16:02Speaker 3: this pump. Now let's go to jail. Keep walking. It's
- 16:16Speaker 3: the last cell on the left. Oh, Dylan.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Dylan, I'll break you for this, so help me.
- 16:20Speaker 3: You've been trying it for a year, and I'm still around.
- 16:23Speaker 4: You won't be after this.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Chester, I'll knock the door.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 16:31Speaker 3: All right, get inside. Make yourself at home.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Nothing to hold me on. Nothing at all. I'll be
- 16:40Speaker 4: out of here by tomorrow noon.
- 16:41Speaker 3: I doubt that. In fact, there's a pretty good chance
- 16:43Speaker 3: you'll never get out of that cell. Not alive, at least.
- 16:47Speaker 4: What are you talking about? According to the law, I've
- 16:50Speaker 4: got it right.
- 16:51Speaker 3: The law, huh? You've broken it every chance you've got.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Tried to break the men who serve it, but when
- 16:56Speaker 3: your own neck gets caught, you start hiding behind the law.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Nevertheless... All right, fine.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Right now, the law out here is kind of sketchy. Now,
- 17:04Speaker 3: this little affair between you and me is one of
- 17:06Speaker 3: the things the law doesn't quite cover. So I'm going
- 17:09Speaker 3: to run it my way.
- 17:11Speaker 10: What kind of talk isn't going to help you?
- 17:14Speaker 3: You've hired a man to kill me, offered him $ 1, 000
- 17:16Speaker 3: to get me out of the way. You can't prove that.
- 17:19Speaker 3: He's made one try and missed. He's still around dark
- 17:22Speaker 3: somewhere waiting. Now he'll try again. That's your problem.
- 17:26Speaker 4: It's not mine. I don't know anything about it.
- 17:28Speaker 3: You know what'll happen, though, if he does get me?
- 17:31Speaker 3: The first thing Chester's going to do is to come
- 17:33Speaker 3: straight back here to the jail and pop a couple
- 17:35Speaker 3: of bullets through these bars. Your boy may kill me, Hale,
- 17:39Speaker 3: but you're not going to live to profit by it.
- 17:41Speaker 4: He wouldn't.
- 17:43Speaker 7: He wouldn't do that.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Shoot down the helpless prisoner? No, neither one of you
- 17:48Speaker 4: would do it.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Chester and I have been friends for a long time.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Why don't you ask him whether he'd do it or not?
- 17:53Speaker 8: You bet I'd do it.
- 17:57Speaker 4: No, no, you wouldn't do it.
- 17:59Speaker 2: You heard somebody shoot Mr.
- 18:00Speaker 8: Dillon in the back. I don't see where you got
- 18:02Speaker 8: any kick coming.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Well, there's your answer, Hale.
- 18:06Speaker 4: No, he wouldn't.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Come on, Chester. Let's go look the town over.
- 18:10Speaker 2: No.
- 18:12Speaker 4: No, well, it's tonight that he's going to.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Oh? Tonight, who's going to do what?
- 18:22Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I don't know anything about it.
- 18:27Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Well, that's too bad. If I knew his name, I'd
- 18:33Speaker 3: have a lot better chance. And so would you. Well,
- 18:40Speaker 3: see you later. Or anyway, Chester will. No.
- 18:44Speaker 4: No, Dylan, you can't do it. Dylan, you can't go
- 18:47Speaker 4: out in the street. He'll get you sure.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Dylan, no.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Wait a minute. I'll tell you his name.
- 18:54Speaker 3: All right.
- 18:58Speaker 4: He's a trail driver. He came up from the fakest
- 19:01Speaker 4: last week. His name is.
- 19:06Speaker 4: His name is Ed Granger.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Ed Granger?
- 19:10Speaker 4: Yeah, you've seen him around the bars. He's a dark-haired,
- 19:15Speaker 4: surly-looking fellow. He's got a scar across the cheek.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Come on, Chester, let's go get him. Come on.
- 19:33Speaker 8: He's here, all right, Mr.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Jones.
- 19:35Speaker 8: He'll be there by the.
- 19:37Speaker 4: End of the bar.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Looks like he's by himself.
- 19:40Speaker 8: What are you going to do, arrest him?
- 19:42Speaker 3: There's no evidence, Chester. Only one way I see is
- 19:44Speaker 3: to make it personal. You stay out of it. Just
- 19:47Speaker 3: cover me, that's all. Yes, sir. Your name Ed Granger?
- 20:00Speaker 4: Might be.
- 20:01Speaker 3: You know who I am?
- 20:04Speaker 7: Judging by the star, I reckon you're a U.S. Marshal.
- 20:07Speaker 3: You ought to do better than that. After all, I'm
- 20:09Speaker 3: worth a thousand dollars to you. Who says so? Lawson Hale. Hale?
- 20:18Speaker 3: Your memory's getting better, huh?
- 20:20Speaker 7: I don't know what you're talking about, Marshal.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Sure you do. That deal you made with Hale. He
- 20:24Speaker 3: told me all about it after I threw him in
- 20:26Speaker 3: jail and persuaded him a little.
- 20:27Speaker 7: I told you, I don't know anything.
- 20:29Speaker 3: You're wearing a gun there, Granger. Why don't you draw
- 20:31Speaker 3: it and go for the thousand dollars? Why don't you
- 20:33Speaker 3: take a chance?
- 20:38Speaker 6: This fellow you're talking about's in jail.
- 20:42Speaker 7: I reckon he wouldn't have anybody working for him now,
- 20:45Speaker 7: would he?
- 20:46Speaker 3: You tell me.
- 20:49Speaker 6: I got no reason to draw on you, Marshal. Not
- 20:51Speaker 6: unless my back's turned, huh?
- 20:55Speaker 7: I ain't drawing.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Granger, you tried to kill me night before last.
- 20:58Speaker 4: Can you prove that?
- 20:59Speaker 3: If I could, you'd either be in jail or dead
- 21:01Speaker 3: right now.
- 21:02Speaker 7: Well, since you can't prove it, what's the argument?
- 21:04Speaker 3: Just that I don't like the idea of somebody trying
- 21:06Speaker 3: to shoot me in the back. Now, if you're any
- 21:09Speaker 3: man at all, we'll settle this right here and now.
- 21:12Speaker 7: You leave me alone, Marshal.
- 21:17Speaker 3: You still figure you got no reason to draw on me?
- 21:21Speaker 3: I ain't drawing. All right, Granger, you got ten minutes
- 21:26Speaker 3: to get out of town. And when you're out, stay out.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Don't come back now or ever, you understand? Yes, sir.
- 21:34Speaker 3: You can start right now.
- 21:50Speaker 8: Must be nearly midnight, Mr.
- 21:52Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Yeah, about that, I guess.
- 21:55Speaker 8: If this is sure one day, I'm glad.
- 21:57Speaker 4: It is over.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah, so am I. At least I can breathe a
- 22:00Speaker 3: little easier now.
- 22:03Speaker 8: I'll just get the fire built up a little.
- 22:05Speaker 3: No, leave it, Chester. Take care of the prisoner first.
- 22:09Speaker 8: You still ain't got no evidence. What are we going
- 22:11Speaker 8: to do about him?
- 22:12Speaker 3: Same as with Granger. Turn him loose, run him out
- 22:14Speaker 3: of town. It should have done it months ago. Go on,
- 22:16Speaker 3: get him, huh?
- 22:17Speaker 7: All right.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Oh, my. Mr.
- 22:26Speaker 9: Dillon? What?
- 22:35Speaker 3: Oh. Granger must have stopped by here on his way
- 22:40Speaker 3: out of town.
- 22:42Speaker 9: Looks like he got Hale over at the window for
- 22:44Speaker 9: a talk and grabbed him and cut his throat right there.
- 22:48Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Figured Hale had sold him out. Get a bulletin on
- 22:53Speaker 3: the wire, Chester. Wanted for murder, Red Granger.
- 22:56Speaker 8: All right, Mr. Dillon.
- 22:59Speaker 3: I guess Hale got pretty much what he bargained for.
- 23:02Speaker 3: He hired himself a killer in order to kill him.
- 23:09Speaker 3: He got it.
