- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Howdy ingo morning, friends and faithful listeners you've
- 0:06Speaker 1: tuned into the Bible Explain podcasts on this lovely Monday morning.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Thank you so much for being here and sharing a
- 0:11Speaker 1: delicious cup of coffee with me. This week, we are
- 0:19Speaker 1: finishing up season ten of the podcast, and next week
- 0:23Speaker 1: we're going to move into season eleven with the books
- 0:26Speaker 1: of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther. We've been really focusing in
- 0:30Speaker 1: on the history of the kings, and now we're going
- 0:32Speaker 1: to move into the things that took place after the
- 0:36Speaker 1: Israelites were exiled into Babylon. So that's what next season
- 0:40Speaker 1: is going to entail. Before today, we're going to read
- 0:43Speaker 1: Second Chronicles thirty six, not the entire thing, just a
- 0:46Speaker 1: small portion of it, and talk about the last few
- 0:49Speaker 1: kings of Israel's history before they are exiled into Babylon.
- 0:54Speaker 1: These were the last kings actually the israel ever had.
- 0:57Speaker 1: So this will be a good topic today because the
- 0:59Speaker 1: one thing we're going to discuss is that the King's
- 1:02Speaker 1: never changed, you know, not from the very beginning. The
- 1:05Speaker 1: people just kept doing whatever they wanted to do, even
- 1:08Speaker 1: though disaster was literally on their doorstep. They just never
- 1:12Speaker 1: would change. They just kept inviting disaster in We're gonna
- 1:16Speaker 1: talk about that right after a quick word from a sponsor. Okay,
- 1:20Speaker 1: So grab your Bible out of the version that you prefer.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I'll be reading as I always do, from the web.
- 1:25Speaker 1: We'll be reading Second Chronicles thirty six one through ten together.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Once you have your Bible, or for those of you
- 1:32Speaker 1: who aren't able to read it right now, let's give
- 1:34Speaker 1: reference to God's word together. Then the people of the
- 1:38Speaker 1: land took jehoahas the son of Josiah and made him
- 1:41Speaker 1: king in his father's place in Jerusalem. Jehoah Has was
- 1:45Speaker 1: twenty three years old when he began to reign, and
- 1:47Speaker 1: he reigned three months in Jerusalem. The King of Egypt
- 1:50Speaker 1: removed him from office at Jerusalem and find the land
- 1:54Speaker 1: one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
- 1:57Speaker 1: The King of Egypt made Elia Kim his brother, king
- 2:00Speaker 1: over Judah and Jerusalem and changed his name to Jehoiakim.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Neko took Jehoahaz his brother and carried him to Egypt.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Jehoiakim was twenty five years old when he began to reign,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. He did that
- 2:14Speaker 1: which was evil in Yahweh his God's sight. Nebukinezer, the
- 2:17Speaker 1: King of Babylon, came up against him and bound him
- 2:20Speaker 1: in fetters to carry him to Babylon. Nebukinezar also carried
- 2:23Speaker 1: some of the vessels of Yahway's house to Babylon and
- 2:26Speaker 1: put them in his temple at Babylon. Now the rest
- 2:28Speaker 1: of the acts of Jehoiakim and the abominations which he did,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and that which was found in him behold. They are
- 2:34Speaker 1: written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And Jehoiakin his son, reigned in his place. Jehoyakin was
- 2:40Speaker 1: eight years old when he began to reign, and he
- 2:42Speaker 1: reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did
- 2:46Speaker 1: that which was evil in Yahway's sight. At the return
- 2:49Speaker 1: of the year, King Nebekinezer sent and brought him to
- 2:51Speaker 1: Babylon with the valuable vessels of Yahwai's house, and made
- 2:55Speaker 1: Zedekiah his brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem. Every once
- 3:00Speaker 1: in a while in second chronicles, the names of the
- 3:03Speaker 1: kings just get really confusing for me, and I cannot
- 3:05Speaker 1: remember who is who. It's like the names all muddy together,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and I struggle with names that are really close to
- 3:13Speaker 1: one another. Even when I'm like reading a book and say,
- 3:16Speaker 1: like there's two characters and both of them have a
- 3:18Speaker 1: JA at the beginning of their name, I have the
- 3:20Speaker 1: hardest time differentiating those two characters. I don't know what
- 3:23Speaker 1: it is. And it happened right in the middle of
- 3:25Speaker 1: Second Chronicles. I don't know if you remember when everybody
- 3:27Speaker 1: was named like Jehasha Fat or Jotham or Jehoida, and
- 3:34Speaker 1: all the names were so close together, and I struggled
- 3:38Speaker 1: so bad. So again, right here it's happening. Jehoah Has,
- 3:42Speaker 1: Jehoiah Kim, Jehoiah Cheen. I do not know who is who,
- 3:46Speaker 1: but I will do the best that I possibly can.
- 3:50Speaker 1: In Verse one, it says, then the people of the land,
- 3:52Speaker 1: it took Jehoah Has the son of Josiah, and made
- 3:55Speaker 1: him king in his father's place in Jerusalem. So don't
- 3:58Speaker 1: forget what we talked about in the last chapter. Josiah,
- 4:01Speaker 1: who was the best king in Israel's history, pretty much
- 4:04Speaker 1: other than King David. He died, and he died because
- 4:08Speaker 1: he didn't listen to a warning from God. Josiah instead
- 4:11Speaker 1: kind of did whatever he wanted to do. And he
- 4:13Speaker 1: went to war against King Neko, who was the pharaoh
- 4:17Speaker 1: of Egypt at the time, and Egypt was a big
- 4:20Speaker 1: major power at this point as well. He went up
- 4:23Speaker 1: against King Necho even though God specifically warned him not to,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and Necho killed him. So Josiah died in Jerusalem, and
- 4:30Speaker 1: he died with a beautiful burial. You know, the people
- 4:33Speaker 1: absolutely loved Josiah. He did so much good for Israel
- 4:37Speaker 1: and Judah as a whole, and so the people, it says,
- 4:40Speaker 1: were very disappointed that he died. But in verse one,
- 4:43Speaker 1: it says after he died, the people of the land
- 4:45Speaker 1: took Johoahaz, the son of Josiah, and made him king
- 4:48Speaker 1: in his father's place in Jerusalem. Now, if you go
- 4:52Speaker 1: back to the very beginning of First Chronicles and read
- 4:54Speaker 1: through the genealogies, Josiah is mentioned there as having four sons,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and his youngest son was named Shalum. Most likely this
- 5:04Speaker 1: boy Jehoahas who becomes the next king. He was likely
- 5:09Speaker 1: that same Shalom. We do know that back in these
- 5:12Speaker 1: days often people had multiple names because languages were different,
- 5:16Speaker 1: or they were given titles of some sort, So it
- 5:19Speaker 1: could be that Shalum took on the title of Jehohas
- 5:22Speaker 1: when he became the king. And the reason people deduce
- 5:26Speaker 1: that this is Shalom, the youngest son of Josiah, is
- 5:29Speaker 1: because first and foremost it says that he was appointed
- 5:31Speaker 1: by the people, and also because his brothers are mentioned
- 5:36Speaker 1: here as all being older than him, So this is
- 5:40Speaker 1: very likely Shalom who now has the name Jehoahas. For
- 5:45Speaker 1: whatever reason, it says, Jehoahaz was twenty three years old
- 5:49Speaker 1: when he began to reign, and he reigned three months
- 5:51Speaker 1: in Jerusalem. The king of Egypt removed him from office
- 5:56Speaker 1: at Jerusalem and find the land one hundred towns of
- 5:58Speaker 1: silver and a town of gold. Egypt was a major
- 6:02Speaker 1: superpower in the world at this point, and so now
- 6:05Speaker 1: King Neko goes into Judah and basically makes it a
- 6:08Speaker 1: vassal state. He dispossesses Jehoahas from being the king and
- 6:12Speaker 1: actually binds him with fetters and carries him off to Egypt,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and Jehohas stayed in Egypt for the rest of his life.
- 6:21Speaker 1: In fact, Jeremiah prophesied about this in Jeremiah twenty two,
- 6:26Speaker 1: verse eleven and twelve. Here's what Jeremiah said for Yahweh says,
- 6:31Speaker 1: touching Shalum, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who
- 6:34Speaker 1: reigned instead of Josiah his father, and who went out
- 6:37Speaker 1: of this place, he won't return there anymore, but he
- 6:40Speaker 1: will die in the place that they have led him captive,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and he will see this land no more. That was
- 6:46Speaker 1: a prophecy that Jeremiah stated that ended up coming true.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Shalum or jehoahas was carried off to Egypt, never to
- 6:54Speaker 1: see Judah ever again. And the reason the Egyptian king
- 6:58Speaker 1: Neko did this was because he was showing his power
- 7:01Speaker 1: to the people. He was saying, I have complete power
- 7:04Speaker 1: over you. Guys. Whoever I instill is king that is
- 7:07Speaker 1: going to be the king. He was telling the people,
- 7:10Speaker 1: you have no power here. You are the ones who
- 7:12Speaker 1: nominated Jehoah has to be the next king. Well not
- 7:15Speaker 1: anymore you haven't, because I am going to decide who
- 7:18Speaker 1: the next king is going to be. The king of
- 7:21Speaker 1: Egypt made Elie Kim, his brother, king over Judah and
- 7:24Speaker 1: Jerusalem and changed his name to Jehoya Kim. Now it's
- 7:28Speaker 1: really interesting about this name change. It actually means Yahweh
- 7:32Speaker 1: raises up or Jehovah establishes or whom Jehovah has set up.
- 7:37Speaker 1: So there's a few thought process here about why King
- 7:40Speaker 1: Neko changed eli Ye Kim's name to something like Jehoya Kim.
- 7:44Speaker 1: The first thought process is that he was just choosing
- 7:47Speaker 1: another name to show that he is power over the
- 7:50Speaker 1: kings themselves, So he just went with a random name.
- 7:53Speaker 1: That is possible, but I would guess not probable. The
- 7:57Speaker 1: other reason is that Necho could have been a Yahweh worshiper.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We do know in the previous chapter he was able
- 8:04Speaker 1: to speak prophecy from God. Now that doesn't necessarily mean
- 8:07Speaker 1: that you're a Yahweh worshiper, because I actually made this
- 8:11Speaker 1: whole argument about how people who don't worship Yahweh can
- 8:14Speaker 1: still speak truth, they can still be given prophecies from God,
- 8:18Speaker 1: and I actually gave some biblical examples of where that
- 8:21Speaker 1: happens in scripture. But Neko, it's possible, could have been
- 8:25Speaker 1: a Yahweh follower, and so he chose the name Jehoiah
- 8:28Speaker 1: Kim to say God is setting this king up in Jerusalem.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Or it could be that Necho was being very presumptuous
- 8:35Speaker 1: and essentially calling himself God or Jehovah being like, yes,
- 8:41Speaker 1: I am like God, and I am setting this person
- 8:45Speaker 1: up to be the king. I don't know which one
- 8:48Speaker 1: it is, but the third one I don't think is
- 8:50Speaker 1: outside the realm of possibilities for sure, because as we know,
- 8:55Speaker 1: pharaohs actually believed themselves to be gods. The pharaoh is
- 9:00Speaker 1: to be worshiped. We've talked about that before, especially back
- 9:02Speaker 1: in the Book of Exodus when we were discussing all
- 9:05Speaker 1: the different gods that Yahweh was targeting when he sent
- 9:10Speaker 1: the plagues on Egypt, and the little gi god Pharaoh
- 9:14Speaker 1: ended up being the last plague when God killed Pharaoh's
- 9:18Speaker 1: firstborn son. So, yes, the pharaohs were supposed to be worshiped,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and they had big egos and probably believed that they
- 9:25Speaker 1: were gods themselves. So very well could be that King
- 9:28Speaker 1: Necho was believing himself to be God and changed Elia
- 9:33Speaker 1: Kim's name to prove that point. So let's talk about
- 9:37Speaker 1: who this Jehoya Kim is. It says starting in verse five,
- 9:41Speaker 1: Jehoiakim was twenty five years old when he began to reign,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. He did that
- 9:47Speaker 1: which was evil in Yahweh's sight. So if we turned
- 9:51Speaker 1: to Second King's chapter twenty three and read verses thirty
- 9:55Speaker 1: four through thirty seven, we get a little bit more
- 9:59Speaker 1: in sight into Jehoiakim's reign. Starting in verse thirty four,
- 10:04Speaker 1: it says Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim, the son of Josiah,
- 10:07Speaker 1: king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed
- 10:10Speaker 1: his name to Jehoiakim. But he took jehoahas away, and
- 10:13Speaker 1: he came to Egypt and died there. Jehoiakim gave the
- 10:17Speaker 1: silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but he taxed the
- 10:19Speaker 1: land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh.
- 10:22Speaker 1: He exacted the silver and the gold of the people
- 10:25Speaker 1: of the land from everyone according to his assessment, and
- 10:28Speaker 1: gave it to Pharaoh Neko. Jehoiakim was twenty five years
- 10:31Speaker 1: old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven
- 10:33Speaker 1: years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zebaidah, the daughter
- 10:37Speaker 1: of Pedea of Ruma. He did that which was evil
- 10:40Speaker 1: in Yawai's sight, according to all that his fathers had done. So. Basically,
- 10:45Speaker 1: Jehoiakim was nothing but a figurehead king. He just listened
- 10:49Speaker 1: to Pharaoh Neko and taxed the people to oblivion because
- 10:54Speaker 1: that is what Pharaoh Neko told him to do. So
- 10:57Speaker 1: all the people are getting taxed to the extreme while
- 10:59Speaker 1: being a vassal state of Egypt at this point in time.
- 11:04Speaker 1: But it also mentions here that Jehoiah Kim did evil
- 11:07Speaker 1: and you always sight according to all that his fathers
- 11:09Speaker 1: had done. And so to really understand the amount of
- 11:12Speaker 1: evil that Jehoyah Kim did, you got to read the
- 11:16Speaker 1: book at Jeremiah, which I just finished reading Jeremiah in
- 11:19Speaker 1: my personal time, and man, it is a powerful book
- 11:23Speaker 1: that really shows the depravity of the people of Judah.
- 11:26Speaker 1: You know, Jeremiah, he was a major prophet that was
- 11:29Speaker 1: alive during this time, constantly telling Judah to turn away
- 11:33Speaker 1: from their wickedness because Babylon was on Judah's doorstep, and
- 11:38Speaker 1: Jeremiah lived through all of that. He lived through the
- 11:40Speaker 1: exile and everything. He was one of the few people
- 11:43Speaker 1: actually left in Judah after the Babylonians came in. God
- 11:48Speaker 1: preserved Jeremiah's life and Jeremiah did not have to go
- 11:51Speaker 1: into Babylon but actually stayed in Judah. He was allowed
- 11:55Speaker 1: to do that. However, he was constantly prophesying and begging
- 11:59Speaker 1: the people to turn from their wickedness. So here's something
- 12:02Speaker 1: that Jeremiah prophesies about Jehoiakin. This is found in Jeremiah
- 12:08Speaker 1: twenty two thirteen through nineteen. He says, woe to him
- 12:13Speaker 1: who builds his house by unrighteousness and his rooms by injustice,
- 12:17Speaker 1: who uses his neighbor's service without wages and doesn't give
- 12:21Speaker 1: him his hire, who says, I will build myself a
- 12:24Speaker 1: wide house and spacious rooms and cutouts for windows, and
- 12:28Speaker 1: a cedar ceiling painted with red? Should you reign because
- 12:32Speaker 1: you strive to excel in cedar? Didn't your father eat
- 12:35Speaker 1: and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was
- 12:38Speaker 1: well with him. He judged the cause of the poor
- 12:41Speaker 1: and the needy, So then it was well. Wasn't this
- 12:44Speaker 1: to know me? Says Yahweh. But your eyes and your
- 12:47Speaker 1: heart are only for your own coveteousness, for shedding innocent blood,
- 12:51Speaker 1: for oppression, and for doing violence. Therefore, he always says,
- 12:54Speaker 1: concerning Jehoiakin, the son of Josiah, King of Judah, they
- 12:58Speaker 1: won't lament for him, saying, oh, my brother, or oh sister,
- 13:02Speaker 1: they won't lament for him, saying, Oh Lord, or oh
- 13:05Speaker 1: his glory, he will be buried with the burial of
- 13:07Speaker 1: a donkey, drawn and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So that's a pretty harsh punishment. But you can see
- 13:15Speaker 1: some of the terrible things that Jehoyakim was doing here. Basically,
- 13:20Speaker 1: he was building this palace for himself using slave labor.
- 13:25Speaker 1: This is during the time when Judah is being taxed
- 13:27Speaker 1: to oblivion and now they're slaves for the king. On
- 13:31Speaker 1: top of all the other problems that they have. The
- 13:34Speaker 1: people are poor, and yet Jehoiakim is building this mansion
- 13:38Speaker 1: for himself out of this cedar painted reddish, says, and
- 13:43Speaker 1: God tells Johoyakim right here, he says, just because you
- 13:45Speaker 1: live in a beautiful palace does not mean you are
- 13:47Speaker 1: going to excel. Look at your father, Josiah. Josiah excelled
- 13:52Speaker 1: and he did good. He did good things. He ate
- 13:55Speaker 1: and drank, and it was well with him because he
- 13:58Speaker 1: listened to my command. It says, he judged the cause
- 14:02Speaker 1: of the poor and the needy, and it was well
- 14:03Speaker 1: with him. Wasn't this to know me? Says Yahweh. So
- 14:07Speaker 1: Josiah knew Yahweh and things went well with him because
- 14:11Speaker 1: of his obedience to God. It says, but your eyes
- 14:14Speaker 1: and your heart are only for your own coveteousness, for
- 14:17Speaker 1: shedding innocent blood, for oppression, and for doing violence. So
- 14:20Speaker 1: then God tells him, You're gonna have a harsh end, Bud,
- 14:24Speaker 1: because of the terrible things that you've done. And by
- 14:27Speaker 1: the way, Jeremiah mentions other things that Jehoyah King did
- 14:30Speaker 1: that were terrible. For example, he killed a prophet. He
- 14:33Speaker 1: also tried to kill Jeremiah as well, but was unsuccessful.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And he also burned a scroll of God's words that's
- 14:43Speaker 1: talked about in Jeremiah thirty six fourteen through thirty two.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Here's what this says. Therefore, all the princes sent Jehudi,
- 14:50Speaker 1: the son of Nathania, the son of Shalemia, the son
- 14:53Speaker 1: of Kushi, to Barak, saying, take in your hand the
- 14:55Speaker 1: scroll in which you've read in the ears of these people,
- 14:58Speaker 1: and come. So Baruk, the son of Nor, took the
- 15:00Speaker 1: scroll in his hand and came to them. They said
- 15:03Speaker 1: to him, sit down now and read it in our hearing.
- 15:05Speaker 1: So Baruke read it in their hearing. Now, when they
- 15:08Speaker 1: had heard all these words, they turned in fear toward
- 15:10Speaker 1: one another, and said to Baruke, we will surely tell
- 15:13Speaker 1: the kings these words. They asked Beruke, saying, tell us, now,
- 15:16Speaker 1: how did you write all these words at his mouth?
- 15:19Speaker 1: And Baruke answered them, he dictated all these words to
- 15:22Speaker 1: me with his mouth, and I wrote them in ink
- 15:24Speaker 1: in the book. Then the princes said to Baruke, you
- 15:27Speaker 1: and Jeremiah go hide. Don't let anyone know where you are.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So that's talking about how Baruke, who was the scribe
- 15:34Speaker 1: of Jeremiah, wrote down everything that God had said against
- 15:38Speaker 1: Israel and Judah and how they were basically going to
- 15:41Speaker 1: be destroyed because of their wickedness and sinfulness. So Baruke
- 15:46Speaker 1: did take the scroll. He went to all of the
- 15:48Speaker 1: leaders of Israel and they did listen. So they're like,
- 15:51Speaker 1: we're going to tell the kings these words, but we
- 15:53Speaker 1: know he's going to get really mad, so go and
- 15:55Speaker 1: hide with Jeremiah. So it says they went to the
- 15:58Speaker 1: king in the court in verse tw and they laid
- 16:01Speaker 1: up the scroll in the room of Alishima, the scribe.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Then they told all the words in the hearing of
- 16:06Speaker 1: the king. So the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll,
- 16:09Speaker 1: and he took it out of the room of Alishima
- 16:11Speaker 1: the scribe. Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king,
- 16:13Speaker 1: and in the hearing of all the princes who stood
- 16:15Speaker 1: beside the king. Now, the king was sitting in the
- 16:18Speaker 1: winter house in the ninth month, and there was a
- 16:20Speaker 1: fire in the brazier burning before him. When Jehudi had
- 16:23Speaker 1: read three or four columns, the king cut it with
- 16:25Speaker 1: the pen knife, cast it in the fire that was
- 16:27Speaker 1: in the brazier, until the entire scroll was consumed by
- 16:30Speaker 1: the fire that was in the brazier. The king and
- 16:32Speaker 1: his servants, who heard all these words were not afraid
- 16:35Speaker 1: and didn't tear their garments. Moreover, el Nathan and Daliah
- 16:39Speaker 1: and Gammariea had made intercession to the king that he
- 16:42Speaker 1: shouldn't burn the scroll, but he would not listen to them.
- 16:45Speaker 1: The king commanded Jeremil the King's son, and Sarriah the
- 16:48Speaker 1: son of Azrael, and Shalamiah the son of Abdiel, to
- 16:51Speaker 1: arrest Baruk the Scribe and Jeremiah the Prophet, but Yahweh
- 16:55Speaker 1: hid them. So basically, the king had a temper tantrum.
- 16:58Speaker 1: He hears this scroll of the words of Jeremiah the Prophet,
- 17:03Speaker 1: and even before the scroll was finished being read. He
- 17:07Speaker 1: like jumped up, took it out of the scribe's hand,
- 17:10Speaker 1: cut it up into pieces, and threw it into his fireplace.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Crazy like really crazy response to all of this, And
- 17:18Speaker 1: the princes that surrounded the king also didn't care about
- 17:22Speaker 1: these words. They didn't want to hear them. They're like, no,
- 17:24Speaker 1: nothing bad could ever happen to us. So God says
- 17:28Speaker 1: something against Jehoiakim for doing this. Continuing in Jeremiah thirty six,
- 17:34Speaker 1: verse twenty seven, y always word came to Jeremiah after
- 17:37Speaker 1: the king had burned the scroll and the words with
- 17:39Speaker 1: which Baruk wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying, take
- 17:42Speaker 1: another scroll, write in it all the former words that
- 17:45Speaker 1: were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim, the King of Judah,
- 17:48Speaker 1: has burned. Concerning Jehoiakim, the King of Judah, you shall say,
- 17:52Speaker 1: he always says, you have burned this scroll, saying why
- 17:55Speaker 1: have you written therein saying the King of Babylon will
- 17:57Speaker 1: certainly come and destroy this land and will cause to
- 18:00Speaker 1: cease from their man and animal. Therefore, he always says,
- 18:03Speaker 1: concerning Jehoyakim, the King of Judah, he will have no
- 18:06Speaker 1: one to sit on David's throne. His dead body will
- 18:09Speaker 1: be cast out in the day of the heat, and
- 18:11Speaker 1: then the night to the frost. I will punish him,
- 18:14Speaker 1: his offspring, and his servants for their iniquity. I will
- 18:17Speaker 1: bring on them, on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on
- 18:19Speaker 1: the men of Judah, all the evil that I have
- 18:21Speaker 1: pronounced against them. But they didn't listen. So Jeremiah took
- 18:25Speaker 1: another scroll and gave it to Beruke the scribe, the
- 18:27Speaker 1: son of Nariah, who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah,
- 18:29Speaker 1: all the words of the book which Jehoyakim, the King
- 18:32Speaker 1: of Judah, had burned in the fire, and many similar
- 18:34Speaker 1: words were added to them. So yes, that story shows
- 18:38Speaker 1: us that Johoyakim was a really bad guy. He just
- 18:41Speaker 1: did whatever he wanted to do without any care of God,
- 18:44Speaker 1: and unfortunately paid the price for it. Going back to
- 18:48Speaker 1: our passage for today, Second Chronicles thirty six, verse six
- 18:53Speaker 1: says Nebkenezar, king of Babylon, came up against Jehoiakim bound
- 18:57Speaker 1: him in fetters to carry him to Babylon. Now, Bakinizer
- 19:01Speaker 1: also carried some of the vessels of Yawai's house to
- 19:03Speaker 1: Babylon and put them in his temple at Babylon. Now,
- 19:07Speaker 1: the rest of the acts of Johoyakim and his abominations
- 19:09Speaker 1: which he did, and that which was found in him, Behold,
- 19:11Speaker 1: they were written in the books of the kings of
- 19:13Speaker 1: Israel and Judah, and Jehoiakin, his son reigned in his place.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Now right there, he might be wondering, Well, it says
- 19:19Speaker 1: that Jehoyakim was bound and sent to Babylon. But didn't
- 19:24Speaker 1: God specifically say twice now that Jehoyakim was going to
- 19:28Speaker 1: die outside the city gates and not even have a burial.
- 19:31Speaker 1: He was just going to be left out in the
- 19:33Speaker 1: heat and the cold like a donkey would die. Well,
- 19:36Speaker 1: that likely did happen, because notice it doesn't say that
- 19:39Speaker 1: Jehoyakim ever made it to Babylon. It actually says they
- 19:43Speaker 1: bound him in fetters to carry him to Babylon. That
- 19:46Speaker 1: doesn't mean he made it to Babylon. In fact, based
- 19:48Speaker 1: upon God's prophecy, he did not make it to Babylon.
- 19:52Speaker 1: We don't know how he died or what the situation
- 19:55Speaker 1: was around his death. I mean, for all we know,
- 19:58Speaker 1: he could have committed suicide were been killed by one
- 20:01Speaker 1: of the Egyptians right outside the city gate. We don't
- 20:04Speaker 1: know what happened to him, but that kind of adds
- 20:06Speaker 1: to the prophecy in a way that Jehoiakim's death was
- 20:09Speaker 1: so insignificant in the minds of the people that nobody
- 20:13Speaker 1: even knows or remembers or cares how he died. So
- 20:18Speaker 1: after Jehoiakim dies, Jehoiah Cheen was eight years old when
- 20:23Speaker 1: he began to reign in verse nine, and he reigned
- 20:25Speaker 1: three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did that
- 20:28Speaker 1: which was evil in Yahweh's sight. And at this point
- 20:31Speaker 1: you're probably like, how can an eight year old do
- 20:33Speaker 1: evil in God's sight? Well, firstly, if you've ever known
- 20:36Speaker 1: an eight year old, they can definitely do evil. They
- 20:40Speaker 1: are evil little creatures. I can tell you that. So
- 20:44Speaker 1: depending on the version that you read, it'll actually say
- 20:46Speaker 1: either eight or eighteen, And some of the biblical manuscripts
- 20:50Speaker 1: that they found do say eighteen. So it could be
- 20:54Speaker 1: that the scribes made a mistake and just didn't include
- 20:57Speaker 1: that little one in front of the eight, and so
- 21:01Speaker 1: it became eight instead of eighteen. I've talked about scribal
- 21:05Speaker 1: errors before on the podcast and how rare they are
- 21:08Speaker 1: and even if they happen, we have other documents to
- 21:12Speaker 1: show the truth of scripture, like for example, right here,
- 21:15Speaker 1: we know most likely that Johoya King was not eight
- 21:18Speaker 1: years old when he became king, but likely eighteen years
- 21:21Speaker 1: old when he became king. So I'll link that episode
- 21:24Speaker 1: if I can find it. In the description of this episode,
- 21:26Speaker 1: where I talk about scribal errors, it says he reigned
- 21:30Speaker 1: three months and ten days in Jerusalem, so he did
- 21:33Speaker 1: not reign for very long, and during that time period
- 21:36Speaker 1: he did evil in Yahweh's sight. At the return of
- 21:39Speaker 1: the year, King nebekin Azer sent and brought him to
- 21:42Speaker 1: Babylon with the valuable vessels of Yahwei's house and made
- 21:45Speaker 1: Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem. So Nebekinezer,
- 21:49Speaker 1: the King of Babylon did essentially the exact same thing
- 21:52Speaker 1: that King Neko did about ten years beforehand. King Neko
- 21:57Speaker 1: took the throne away from Jehoah has remember, and set
- 22:01Speaker 1: another king in place. That's what Nebekinezer did here to
- 22:05Speaker 1: Jehoya Kin, the son of Jehoiakim, they have almost the
- 22:08Speaker 1: exact same name. So in place of Jehoia Keen, it
- 22:12Speaker 1: says Nebekinezer made Zedekiah his brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Now this is worded kind of funky because Zedekiah was
- 22:21Speaker 1: actually jehoia Kin's uncle. We know that because of the
- 22:25Speaker 1: genealogies that are listed out in the beginning of first Chronicles.
- 22:30Speaker 1: So when it says that he made Zedekiah his brother
- 22:32Speaker 1: king over Judah, they're probably talking about Jehoiakim. They made
- 22:37Speaker 1: Zedekiah Jehoiakim's brother king over Judah and Jerusalem instead of
- 22:42Speaker 1: Jehoiakim's son. Now, Zedekiah is the last king in Israel's history.
- 22:49Speaker 1: So on Wednesday, we're going to talk about who Zedekiah was,
- 22:52Speaker 1: some of the evil things that he did also during
- 22:55Speaker 1: his reign, and how he mistreated Jeremiah as well. We'll
- 22:58Speaker 1: get into all of that as as well as the
- 23:00Speaker 1: end of Judas history at this point as we know it.
- 23:04Speaker 1: So that'll be all discussed on Wednesday, and after that
- 23:07Speaker 1: we're going to be moving into season eleven next week,
- 23:10Speaker 1: so I'm looking forward to talking about all of that
- 23:12Speaker 1: with you guys this upcoming week. Before I say goodbye
