- 0:52our listeners, and I want to especially thank Marie who actually mailed in a
- 0:58donation. And before we do get started, I did want to clarify a
- 1:03couple of things regarding these Johnny Doller episodes. First of all, Monday,
- 1:08we will always have for the next fifty eight weeks in app two episodes fifteen
- 1:15minute episodes of Yours Truly, Johnny Doller. Wednesdays and Fridays. Usually this
- 1:19will be the format, two on Wednesday and one on Friday. Now there
- 1:23are a couple there are four serials where one part is missing. In those
- 1:27cases, we'll just have two on Monday and two on Friday, with a
- 1:30special on Wednesday. In addition, there is one six part serial and so
- 1:37we'll have two on each day. Also, a lot of these Yours Truly
- 1:42Johnny Doller. Five parts were were serialized from previous episodes of not only Yours
- 1:53Truly, Johnny Doller, but other programs such as C. M. Spade
- 1:56and Richard Diamond. So I will actually mention if I know and I have
- 2:02the information what script it was based on. I've got a couple of places
- 2:09on the internet. So if you're thinking now, hold your answer until after
- 2:14Friday, because I may already have the info. All right, Well,
- 2:17now it's time to get into today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Yawler. It's
- 2:23time for the McCormick matter, Part three and Part four from Hollywood. It's
- 2:31time now for Bob Bailey as Johnny Deller. This is Dule's Martin. Lieutenant
- 2:38Martin, Yeah, that's right. I got a message. You called while
- 2:40I was out left this number. Yeah, I want to talk to you
- 2:44about the mccomick case. Lieutenant McCormick, hundred thousand dollars burglary out on Long
- 2:49Island back in nineteen fifty one. I was the officer in charge. Who
- 2:53are you, insurance investigator? I got a tip to the next convict name
- 2:57Joe Penny might have pulled it. I'm at Penny's Hotel. Well, let
- 3:00me know how you make up. Say listen, his room has been torn
- 3:02apart, every inch of it's been searched. And when I came here tonight,
- 3:06I got sucked by a woman with a gun. Give me that address
- 3:17tonight at every weekday night. Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man
- 3:22with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous freelance Insurance Investigator, Yours truly,
- 3:28Johnny Dollar. Expense Accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar did the Allied Casualty
- 3:44and Insurance Company Limited, Markham Building, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is
- 3:49an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the McCormick matter. Expense account Item
- 3:57seven two dollars two drinks for myself for Lieutenant Jules Martin, NYPD, a
- 4:01big, swarthy man who seemed to know what he was about. Martin looked
- 4:05over the damage done by the unknown rant sacker of Joe Penny's room, questioned
- 4:10the clerk, who was unable to furnish any helpful information. Then, because
- 4:14Joe Penny was officially a parole violator ordered to general pick him, he should
- 4:20be able to get our hands on him pretty soon, Duller, I hope
- 4:24it's that easy, Lieutenant. Any reason why it shouldn't be fairly routine,
- 4:28No, just a feeling, I guess. I don't know. This whole
- 4:30matter has been flimsy. The tip was weak, but it seems to be
- 4:33paying off. I think fits, though I don't quite get all this dollar.
- 4:38How'd you come in on this? Old Mike Cairn died up at Sinxing
- 4:42two days ago. Before he went, he told me he believed Joe Penny
- 4:45might have pulled him a comick burglary. It didn't seem likely then, Penny
- 4:49being a small time auto thief and whatnot, but now it does. And
- 4:53view what's been happening lately, somebody sure warns something Penny might have. Judging
- 4:57from that room, I never saw one taking a par better an expert search
- 5:00job. Yeah, hey, lieutenant, when you picked Joe Penny up,
- 5:03I'd like to be in on it. He's my only lead in this case,
- 5:06and I want to talk to him again. And that's not asking too
- 5:09much. Now, Daughter, about this woman you saw pretty about thirty,
- 5:14dark hair, good dresser and wore a silver mink stole the gun. She
- 5:16sacked me with was a little one twenty five or maybe thirty two automatic.
- 5:23You think she might have done the searching in Joe's room? What do you
- 5:25think she was flustered and upset when I bumped into We're anxious to get away
- 5:29from the place, and of course the gun in her hand. Yeah,
- 5:31she sound familiar to you in this neighborhood. No, No, it could
- 5:35be anybody. Yeah, well that's about it, lieuten Yeah? No,
- 5:41I oh thanks. I suppose you talked to McCormick, got the full story
- 5:46of the burgery from him almost first thing. Yeah, and I remember him
- 5:48when it first happened. Nice enough, but strange. I thought it's business
- 5:54about somebody phoning the parole office ahead of you to get Joe. Penny's a
- 5:57dress that stops me, though. That's hard to figure. You're telling me
- 6:00everything. Sure, I'm sure that part sounds crazy. Not if somebody knew
- 6:04I was looking for him wanted to get him first. But who how should
- 6:08I know? Well, we'll see what we will see. Can I drop
- 6:11you anyway? No, thanks, I'll walk. You'll let me know when
- 6:14you pick him up. Sure. Two days passed and I didn't hear from
- 6:23Lieutenant Martin. I finally phoned in and a supplementary had turned up no leads.
- 6:28Martin had men watching Joe's hotel. His former friends and acquaintances were being
- 6:32checked. Meanwhile, I decided to try and find out who the dark woman
- 6:36in the first stall had been. It seemed pretty obvious that she had just
- 6:41come from Joe's room, that she knew him or was connected with him in
- 6:44some way, So once more I combed over Joe Panny's filet headquarters, this
- 6:48time looking for a woman's name. The only one mentioned was an ex wife
- 6:53who had divorced him six years before. Her name was Iris Carter at the
- 6:58Bureau of Vital Statistics MARGE certificate and record of divorce proceedings gave me a composite
- 7:02picture of an unhappy and turbune a three year marriage. It also gave me
- 7:06a general description of Iris Carter that could very well fit the woman I had
- 7:10seen briefly in the hallway outside Joe Panny's hotel room. There was a six
- 7:14year old address to start on that. Un I think that you, no,
- 7:23ma'am, I'm not unus. Oh no, her I don't know,
- 7:28I really don't know her. Oh, well, what do you want?
- 7:30I'd like to talk to the manager. I want some information. What's your
- 7:33name, Johnny Doller? What kind of information are you looking for? Are
- 7:39you the manager yesterday? I am Well, I'm trying to locate a woman
- 7:42named Iris Carter. She might have used the name Iris Panny. She was
- 7:46married once to a man named Joe. Panny lived here about six years ago.
- 7:51Were you here then? That was? Did you know her? I
- 7:56did? Did you know him? Yeah? To jail? Does she live
- 8:01here now? She don't? Do you have any idea where I can find
- 8:05her? I don't, Well, do you happen to know if she ever
- 8:09worked her? Just to talk to her? When did she move on?
- 8:13Oh? Long time ago? Five years? Maybe? What's your business?
- 8:20Insurance? Oh? Oh, nobody around here buys insurance. We don't have
- 8:28to go into that. If you can think of any place I might get
- 8:31a line on her, I'd appreciate it. It seems to me she worked
- 8:35at a bookstore down the street, down what street? Out there? Block
- 8:41or two down that way? I think she worked there. I don't know
- 8:43who. You can try? Thank you? I will you pried? You
- 8:48dip your head, so tell me? Do you remember what she looked like?
- 8:52Sort of yeah, well, oh not as tall as I am.
- 8:58Nice pretty girl, blonde to brunette, dark here almost black. Know any
- 9:05of her friends when she lived here? No, No, I couldn't tell
- 9:09you that. Why Oh, I might look up one of them and ask
- 9:13her about her. That's all you asked. That bookstore. I think she
- 9:16worked there. The bookstore Iris Carter Panny had worked in was as dismal as
- 9:28the neighborhood. The proprietor and missus Oles yielded a little more helpful information than
- 9:31Iris Carter's former landlady. Yes, Iris had worked there for about six months.
- 9:37She'd quit almost five years before. No, she didn't know where to
- 9:41find her expense account item eight, one dollar and two cents lunch. I
- 9:52had it in the neighborhood diner called the Shoppel, a place where missus Oles
- 9:54said Iris Carter had frequently eaten. The restaurant manager remembered Iris vaguely. She
- 10:01also remembered Iris's boyfriend. I asked for a description. She did better than
- 10:05that. She gave me his name, occupation, and address, an old
- 10:09rehearsal hall two blocks away. The five man combo working there was really putting
- 10:24it up. Yeah, And the minute I saw him, I knew the
- 10:28boy wearing the trumpet was the one I was looking for. Just good looking
- 10:33and smooth enough to go with a girl. Iris Carter Sondifi trumpet too.
- 10:43Okay, guys, take five. I'm looking for Jack Lang. I'm Johnny
- 10:54Dollar. Can we talk a minute. It's about all I got, mister
- 10:56Diller. We'll smoke nothing. Oh Man gets real tired out about this time
- 11:07of day. Yeah, imagine it does the way you put it out.
- 11:11Well, everybody to his own racket. What's yours insurance? Investigating? Okay?
- 11:16Now what Well? I've been asking around the neighborhood, and they tell
- 11:20me you once knew a girl named Iris Carter or Iris Penny, Iris Carter
- 11:26going. I'd like to find her and talk to her, and I thought
- 11:28you might be able to help me. Going. I want to talk to
- 11:33her ex husband. Most of all, I thought somehow she might know where
- 11:35to find him these days. He's in the can he was released three weeks
- 11:39ago. Any ideas, No, I thought finding her might be a shortcut
- 11:46to him. I wouldn't think so. They were all washed up when I
- 11:50know her? Why was that five years ago. She hadn't seen him for
- 11:52over a year. Then he didn't have much use for him. I don't
- 11:58blame him. How long did you know her? No, we went together
- 12:03for a while while she worked at some crummy bookstore, and she moved away
- 12:07and I didn't see her after that. I think she said something about going
- 12:11back to Ohio. Do you think I don't remember? Off. Let me
- 12:16put it this way. As far as I know, she's in no trouble.
- 12:20The one we want is a rex husband. You'd be helping a lot.
- 12:24If you could tell me where to find her. I don't know.
- 12:26I honestly don't know, and I sure wish I did. I'd like to
- 12:31find her myself. Why. Well, when she went with me, I
- 12:39wasn't any good. I think she just walked out because she was tired of
- 12:43losers, sick up to here, you know what I mean. I can't
- 12:46blame her. He gave her a pretty bad time. I didn't do much
- 12:50better. But now I got something. It's just a little five piece out
- 12:54but not much, but something. I'd like to show it to her and
- 12:58say, iris is his mind? You kind of had it bad? Huh
- 13:03bad? As a guy like me can get it. I know I'll probably
- 13:09never see her again as long as I live by. If never another one
- 13:13like or ever shows up, I'm going to be ready dead. Let me
- 13:20see. No, she must have been something. Take a look nice?
- 13:30Yeah, I take it back. What about seeing her? I've seen her
- 13:37when two nights ago, in the hallway outside Joe Penny's robe. You sure,
- 13:43I'm sure she hit me with a gun before she left. The picture
- 13:50he had flipped out of his wallet was old and well thumbed. It showed
- 13:54a sultry kind of face that could have been twenty or thirty or forty,
- 13:58a wide frank's smiling, happy mouth. Not the kind of girl I would
- 14:01imagine could ever be married to a Joe Penny. But there was no doubt
- 14:05about it. She had been married to him, and I had seen her.
- 14:09On my way back to the hotel, I dropped into check with Lieutenant
- 14:11Martin. Hi, Hi, doing any good? And he lead on Joe
- 14:16Penny And I think, so far this may take longer than I thought.
- 14:18At first, Well, I'm not looking for his ex wife. I didn't
- 14:20find her, but I found a few people knew her. She was the
- 14:24one at his hotel. The other night. Name's Iris Cardiff. Sure positive,
- 14:28I saw a picture. We better try to pick her up too.
- 14:30I'll put it out right away. Fine, well, I'll keep it.
- 14:31Wait a minute, don't go. We had some action here today. Sit
- 14:37down. Thanks. Julian McCormick called up reported you. He said you came
- 14:41out there bothering him a couple of days ago. He said he doesn't want
- 14:45to be bothered. Well, I only talked to him to get his story
- 14:48on the burglary, and I told him, as long as you didn't break
- 14:50the law, there was nothing we could do to stop you from investigating.
- 14:52But he didn't like it. He seemed perfectly willing to cooperate with me when
- 14:56I talked to him before. Yeah, it was sometime. He's rich.
- 15:00Excuse me, Martin here, that's right. How long ago? Okay,
- 15:09Well they found your boy Joe Penny. What. Yeah, he's on his
- 15:13way to the Morgue Harbor Patrol picked up his body a couple of hours ago,
- 15:18loaded down with slugs, some case. And that ain't all Johnny Huh,
- 15:22his feet were burnt. Johnny Deller, Frank porter An allied casually.
- 15:43How's it going, kid? I don't know, do you ever find Joe
- 15:46Penny. The harbor patrol found him floating around the harbor. He'd been shot
- 15:50and his feet were burnt. Was torture? Well, what can I do
- 15:56to help find a girl who was once married to him? Joe pay He
- 16:00had a wife? Yeah, she wears a mink stole these days and carries
- 16:03a gun. She's tied up with it somewhere. Her name's Iris Carter,
- 16:07Iris Carter. You met her just long enough to get slug with a gun?
- 16:11Well, wait a minute, that I'd like to get it all straight.
- 16:14Can I come over? I'll be here tonight and every weekday night.
- 16:25Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of a Man with the Action Packed Expense Account
- 16:30America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigators, Truly Johnny Dollar expense account submitted by Special Investigator
- 16:45Johnny Dollar the Allied Casually and Insurance Company Limited, Markham Building, Hartford,
- 16:51Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the McCormick
- 16:56matter. Expense account Item nine fourteen dollars even secretarial services, I dictated a
- 17:04detailed report of one hundred thousand dollars McCormick case. I did it for two
- 17:07reasons, One to make certain that Allied and the New York Police were thoroughly
- 17:11informed of my part of the matter, and two to review the case for
- 17:15my own benefit. One of the key figures, Joe Panny was a murder
- 17:19victim. Attached as a copy of that report. I tried to cover as
- 17:25closely as possible my conversation with Mike care And at Sing Sing when he tipped
- 17:27me off that Joe Panny had something to do with the McCormick burglary of five
- 17:32years ago. Also one conversation with Joe Panny, his subsequent disappearance and murder.
- 17:37I had a copy for Frank Porter when he showed up at my room.
- 17:41He read it from top to bottom. Geeve whit, Johnny? If
- 17:45this isn't something you come here for. Joe Panny, it looks like he
- 17:48did the McCormick job. Now I did. You're stopped. What can you
- 17:52do? Find his wife? Maybe you're doing this at your own expense,
- 17:56aren't you? Oh? I think your company will pay for it in time.
- 18:00You have to recover the stuff. I know you think you will.
- 18:03I think so. Yeah, your key man's dead. You have to start
- 18:06all over again. Maybe not. I don't really know whether Joe Penny was
- 18:10my key man or not. I still can't see a small time auto thief
- 18:14working a big, slick safe burglary. Every indication is that he was the
- 18:18one I know. I'd like to find that girl, Iris Carter and talk
- 18:22to her about it. She's connected with it now from what you say on
- 18:26the paper, Yeah very much. Oh, jeep was I feel like a
- 18:30fifth wheel. I'm not helping you a bit. You know. I handled
- 18:33this case for the company when it first broke. I worked with a Lieutenant
- 18:36Martin for six months on it and we didn't turn up a thing. You're
- 18:38on it three or four days and you have all kinds of action. Oh,
- 18:41I must have stepped in at the right time. Yeah, Johnny,
- 18:45somebody gunned Joe Penny down. I know you like to work alone, do
- 18:49things your own way, but be careful if you stay on this. I
- 18:52get worried when somebody starts shooting. Oh sure, I didn't get that though,
- 18:57But if I keep on this, I wouldn't let it go. Now
- 19:02if my life depended on it. I'm going to find that woman, and
- 19:04I'm going to find the stuff sure, well, geeve wh don't let anything
- 19:08happen to you. I won't. I talked some more with Frank Porter about
- 19:17the case. He repeated his offer in the name of Allied casually to help
- 19:21if he could. I told him I'd take it up on it if anything
- 19:23came up at all. He left. I was at Central Police Station ten
- 19:27minutes later, and five minutes after that, Lieutenant Dules Martin was calling for
- 19:32the medical examiners report on Joe Penny's death. A uniform man brought it in.
- 19:37Martin shoved it across the desk at me them. He says, Joe
- 19:41Penny's been dead about forty eight hours or longer. Two twenty five slugs right
- 19:45through the chest, penetrated both lungs, one through the neck. It's a
- 19:51very neat shooting at that range. What range or at least twenty feet maybe
- 19:56longer. Not many people shoot twenty Five's that? Well, it's a little
- 20:00a woman's gun. Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Now,
- 20:04let's talk about that woman you saw around there that night. How you say
- 20:07it was Penny's X Yeah, I risk connor. I don't know whether her
- 20:11gun was a twenty five or thirty two. Well think I have Look,
- 20:15don't get sore with me. It's just that she looks like better than ever
- 20:19for opening this case up. I put her on in all points. Sorry
- 20:23I got wrong, That's sorry. Now the enemy thinks that Penny was killed
- 20:27before he was dumped in the water, possibly ambushed by someone he didn't know
- 20:32or didn't trust. If he's right about the range that had fit in,
- 20:36someone who knew him would do it close up. Yeah wait, you said
- 20:40his feet were burned. Yeah, I got the pictures here to prove it.
- 20:44Theyn't take a look, and these are the glossies. Uh, these
- 20:49are the burns here right here, here and here. Yeah, then he
- 20:56wasn't ambushed exactly. Look I don't know what he was, but this is
- 21:00the crazy part. He was already dead when this happened. No rope marks
- 21:06on his legs or wrists. You don't sit still for burning, no matter
- 21:10how tough you are. It's fascinating. Now someone shot him down then tried
- 21:15to make it look like he was tortured for information. First cover up.
- 21:18He's supposed to look like he knew something or had something, And maybe he
- 21:22didn't know or have anything at all. How do you feel, wows he?
- 21:26If the burning was cover up, then maybe the big search of his
- 21:29room was cover up too, to throw us off, to throw you off,
- 21:33not me, I wasn't in on it. Then yeah, well,
- 21:37one thing that's genuine? What's said the corpse? An hour and a half
- 21:48later, a witness was delivered to the office of Lieutenant Martin. His name
- 21:52was Edmund Thompson. He sold papers in the dock area. Both Martin and
- 21:56I looked at him twice, and I could tell both of us were doubting
- 21:59that theredulity of anything he might have to say. Hi, Hi, my
- 22:06name's Martin. This is mister Dollar. Yes, sir, glad to know
- 22:10you both. Now, would you mind telling us everything you saw the other
- 22:14night? Tuesday night? It was Tuesday? Sure? Why not? I
- 22:19saw this guy dumped in the water. We understand that. Can you tell
- 22:22us the circumstances. It's against the will of God, as it certainly is
- 22:30against the laws of nature too. What did you see, mister Thompson?
- 22:36I prayed for him both. You tried, Dollar, When did you pray
- 22:44right after? I saw, yes, sir on the street. Huh,
- 22:48Nope, I was on the vacant lot. I was cutting across towards or
- 22:52dark. Oh. Then I see this car, pull of long black car,
- 22:56a lot of chrome on it. This fellow jumps out and goes around
- 23:00at the back. He opens the trunk and he pulls this other fellow out,
- 23:07hoists him up, and he carries him over the dock. Then he
- 23:11just lets him go. Then you pray. Then I prayed. I was
- 23:18a little too scared to do anything else. This car, the man had
- 23:22a long black one, a lot of chrome. Sedana cope, what's the
- 23:27difference? Two seats in one seat? One seat? Happen to get the
- 23:33license number? All right, all right, let that go. How about
- 23:37the man? Can you describe him? He stood there and looked down at
- 23:41the water and started himself as a cigarette. Well what kind of a face
- 23:45did he have? Dark light? A mustache? What a devil's face?
- 23:51Saw Now, what does that mean? The devil? Mister Thompson, Do
- 23:56you understand that we want to apprehend this man, that he's responsible for one
- 24:00man's death and then he might harm someone else. I'll pray for him,
- 24:04pray for him. All Well, how was he dressed? Didn't notice hatt?
- 24:15But he had a long black coupe. Do you know the make?
- 24:18Nope? Would you know him if you saw him again? Noop? Look
- 24:23when you saw him dump a body into the water, Why didn't you notify
- 24:26the police. Why it's police business. Let them take care of their business.
- 24:33I'll take care of mine. Any of you fellows got a cigarette and
- 24:42I left Lieutenant Martin brooding over his witness went out for a white at dinner.
- 24:48When I called him later, he hadn't learned anything more. So I
- 24:49decided to call it a night and went back to my hotel. I found
- 24:53a note waiting for me from Jack Lang, the band leader friend of Iris
- 24:56Carne, said he got a tip she'd worked a one time at the Elmar
- 25:00Theater and the Bronx. If I learned anything, please let him know he
- 25:04was still in love with her Elmar Theater. I decided my night was far
- 25:08from over. You buy a tick it off front if you want to look
- 25:19at the I only want to see one. Her name's Iris Carter. Does
- 25:22she work here? I just told you go buy a ticket off front.
- 25:26Just tell me this. Does Iris Carter work here? Is the name familiar
- 25:30to you? Have you ever seen her or heard of her? You give
- 25:32me any more trouble, Clark, I told you to go off front.
- 25:34Can't you answer a simple question. I'm looking for Iris Carter, Iris criters
- 25:41you never heard of? Call me a cop, glorious boy. Never mind,
- 25:45I'll take care of him. Come on you, Iris Carter? Is
- 25:53that what you said? Yeah? I got a change. You gotta get
- 25:56back on in five minutes and I'll talk to you later. Even got to
- 26:00say stick around, I'll change back the screen. Okay, I'm glory you
- 26:04would. Who are you? Johnny Dollar? Well? You want with Irish
- 26:08Scott it? I want to see her and tell her something. Tell me,
- 26:14well, for one thing, her ex husband's dead. What got to
- 26:18watch that screen? Oh? Say that again, Joe Penny? Her ex
- 26:22husband's dead? Oh kid, not no good? Bombas really dead? Yeah?
- 26:27Where can I find her? She don't work here, no more has
- 26:30worked here in four five years? She quit? Where is she? You
- 26:34took over from the old man out there when you heard me mention her name.
- 26:37You've satisfied yourself that I'm really looking for, So suppose you go with
- 26:41me, mister. I'm not satisfied about anything. Where is she? She
- 26:45got herself married to a nice guy. But for her? Is she in
- 26:48town? Sure? You just want to see her and tell her Joe's dead,
- 26:52That's about it. I thought maybe she might be able to help me
- 26:56and the police find out who killed him. He was killed two days ago
- 27:00on his body today. You know about that? Are you a cop?
- 27:03I'm an insurance investigator and you have to see her? You want it put
- 27:07in writing? Don't get a half what I'm getting at is this quick change?
- 27:12Huh? Now listen, Iris is good, you know what I mean.
- 27:17And she's married to a nice guy. Now, want you this make
- 27:21a trouble? Not if she hasn't done anything wrong? Well I can tell
- 27:23you she hasn't, but does make trouble. It'd be a shame. She
- 27:27said, up nice and I like to see a girl, said, well,
- 27:30don't you. Certainly I haven't seen her almost since she left here.
- 27:33But oh, you look like a right kind of guy. I believe you.
- 27:38Thanks Gloria. She lives out in Long Island now. Her name's McCormick,
- 27:44Iris McCormick. By the time I said goodbye to Glory and walked out
- 27:51the stage door and got out into the alley, I thought I had most
- 27:53of it figured the ex wife of an ex con married a wealthy Long Island
- 27:57her name McCormick. When the honeymoon was over, the safe was robbed.
- 28:03Walking out that alley. I was wondering whether to phone the police. Are
- 28:07allied casually first shooting? You've been hit down. It isn't bad. Did
- 28:27you see him? Nobody in the car? See the car, the one
- 28:30that just gone out o the car? We had a long black coop a
- 28:33lot of chrome. Fellow didn't have his lights on it. Hey, that's
- 28:37against the law. Hey, you need help, mister, No, no,
- 28:44I'm at now Here's our star Bob Bailey to tell you about tomorrow's episode.
- 29:04Thanks Tomorrow. The end of the trail of a thirty eight caliber slug
- 29:08johnas want you Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny Doller is transcribed
- 29:19in Hollywood, written by John Dawson. The entire production is under the direction
- 29:25of Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join us tomorrow night at same time and
- 29:29station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Doller. Roy Rowan speaking
- 30:19Welcome back. While a couple of things to note about this serial. The
- 30:25first thing that stands out to me is they do a really good job of
- 30:30finding believable ways to recap the story for the listeners now oftentimes particularly you know,
- 30:38when we listen to the Superman serials, which were also done by Jack
- 30:41Johnstone, they would often have it'd be somewhat clunky, unbelievable as they managed
- 30:51to retell the whole story over the course of two episodes. One other key
- 30:56difference here that I should note is with the Superman serials over on the Old
- 31:02Time Radio Superman Show, I actually kind of make it a secret, not
- 31:06something I will reveal on the air as to how many parts there are in
- 31:10a serial as to not spoil the suspense. You know, there there's a
- 31:14couple that are like two or three parts, though some of them can extend
- 31:18up to twenty. I think some close to thirty parts. This one is
- 31:25a lot less variance. Most of these serials are going are were five partters.
- 31:30There was one six parter and one nine partter. A whole lot more
- 31:34dependability. They were also seeing a great quality of storytelling and acting. They're
- 31:41really getting a chance to develop the story without getting something that sprawls a whole
- 31:47lot. It was noting it this point It's kind of an ideal time to
- 31:55have a show like this because there were a lot of misty dramas had made
- 32:00their way to television. They were pretty simple. These were half hour programs,
- 32:06all resolved in a single part. But you have here, over the
- 32:08course of five days, is a full fledged kind of radio mystery movie that's
- 32:15playing out for us and isn't far from the length of the nineteen seventies NBC
- 32:22mystery movie Wheel films. So we've got some great complexity also just some great
- 32:30acting. Now, I listened once all the way through all of these serials.
- 32:34I don't remember all of these solutions, but I do remember the one
- 32:37to this one. You'll definitely want to listen on Friday when we will bring
- 32:43you the climax. It really is a bit of a surprise, or at
- 32:49least it was to me, just the way the way it ended. Well,
- 32:54we do turn to listener comments and feedback and iTunes for from Harry,
- 33:00who says, I really like this podcast. I'm twenty years old. I
- 33:04remember my dad would listen to old radio or watch old movies. Back then,
- 33:07I really didn't enjoy them. Now I can't get enough of them.
- 33:10My favorite show is Johnny Doller featuring John Lynn. I can't figure out why
- 33:15so many people just like him. I think he's the best Johnny Doller.
- 33:19My second show is How to Save a Life. Really disappointed this over skipped
- 33:22ahead just to listen to it. Still a little bit hind but casting up
- 33:25fast. Wanted to say thanks and keep up the work. Amazing work.
- 33:30PS. Really like your commentary. I think it was referring to a life
- 33:34in your hands. I'm glad you're enjoying it. The thing I think that
- 33:38makes John Lunn and to a lesser extent, the pre Bailey Dollars not viewed
- 33:49as well, is a lot of people were first introduced to Johnny Doller through
- 33:54Bob Bailey. I knew a gentleman from work who he grew up, you
- 34:00know, in the you know, in the nineteen fifties, and he listened
- 34:05to Bob Bailey is Johnny Dowler on the radio. And you know, in
- 34:09terms of radio detectives, it was for most of which run the not only
- 34:15the main game, but pretty much the only game in town in terms of
- 34:19regular detective shows. And I think that you know, you take take a
- 34:29listen to the quality that you know that we're hearing here in the growing complexity
- 34:32of the plots, particularly facilitated by these fifteen minutes serial formats. And I
- 34:38think that if there was any virtue or any benefit in playing all of the
- 34:47John Lan Johnny dowlers, it's what and Edmund O'Brien and Charles Russell for that
- 34:53matter, is that I hope it built some appreciation for the talents and abilities
- 35:00of those actors who don't brought their own unique spend to Johnny Dowler. And
- 35:07we turn out actual written letter from Marie who says I've had many hours of
- 35:13entertainment from Dragnet and great detectives. Thank you and thank you Maria. Truly
- 35:17appreciate it and appreciate your support of today's program. Finally, Clark says,
- 35:24Hello, my name is Clark from Alberta, Canada. I'd just like to
- 35:28say I'm twenty seven years old, been listening to old radio shows since I
- 35:31was a little boy. In this app is so awesome. Now I can
- 35:35listen to old time radio whenever I want. Thanks so much, well,
- 35:38thanks so much for listening over there in Alberta. Clark, and that will
- 35:45actually do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with Sherlock Holmes.
