- 0:09So a word that kept coming to my mind over the last
- 0:13couple of weeks is fleeting. I've
- 0:16been thinking a lot about this and how I've heard
- 0:18this word used and what it means to me. You
- 0:22see we've had news headlines lately which seem
- 0:25more gruesome and chaotic than the usual, such as
- 0:30the stabbings at Bondi where we had six victims
- 0:32brutally stabbed to death in a shopping centre. We've
- 0:37had the attempted murder of Bishop Marmary Emanuel while
- 0:42he was taking his service. Then
- 0:46you've got the war in the Middle East which seems to
- 0:48be escalating to a frenetic pitch, which seems to be
- 0:52dragging more nations into its wake and governments
- 0:55that were once unwavering allies of Israel seem to
- 0:59be falling away. News headlines are a constant
- 1:03reminder of how short life is and how easily it can
- 1:09be taken from us. And yet while I'm going about
- 1:13my week, whether it's in the real world or the
- 1:17online world, what I've seen is that people are
- 1:24attempting to push the chaos away and focus on
- 1:28things which seem to be fleeting. To
- 1:31me it seems people are all about the instant
- 1:35gratification, anything which distracts them from the
- 1:41murders, from wars, the general chaos that is
- 1:45currently permeating our world. Thus
- 1:49I've been thinking about this world fleeting and
- 1:51specifically not to chase after the things in this
- 1:56world which are temporary, but instead to maybe
- 2:02embrace the long term. Don't
- 2:05chase after short -term satisfaction rather than
- 2:09placing so much emphasis on making money just so I can
- 2:15buy a new toy which I don't mind and find
- 2:19momentary satisfaction and relief. Instead
- 2:25of doing that, embrace the things that I have in my
- 2:29life which are far more important, things like
- 2:32family, friends, all the people that I love and all
- 2:37the things in our lives which can leave a lasting
- 2:42legacy rather than the temporary pleasures which
- 2:47quickly are fading away. Just
- 2:52recently I've had the pleasure of singing with my
- 2:57cousin, Aletheia, who I hadn't seen for a long
- 2:59time. And Aletheia actually wrote and
- 3:03featured on a song that I recorded way, way back on
- 3:08my first album which is called Closer and I
- 3:11recorded that released it in the year 2000. So
- 3:15long time ago, 24 years ago. The
- 3:18song is the Bible verse Psalm 39, 4 to 6. And
- 3:26the lyrics are, Lord, make me to know my end and
- 3:31what is the measure of my days that I may know how
- 3:36frail I am. Indeed, you have made my days as
- 3:41handbreds and my age is as nothing before you.
- 3:46Certainly every man at his best
- 3:49state is but vapor. Surely every man walks about like
- 3:55a shadow, surely they busy themselves in vain. He
- 4:01heaps up riches and does not know who will gather
- 4:05them. And when I've been contemplating
- 4:08the words to this Psalm and I actually allow myself
- 4:13to think of how short my life really is, which in
- 4:19the vastness of eternity is, it is just a vapor as
- 4:23the Psalmist wrote. I was also reminded of the
- 4:26words that Jesus says in Matthew 16, verse 26. He
- 4:32says, for what profit is it to a man if he gains
- 4:36the whole world? But he loses his soul. Or
- 4:42what will a man give in exchange for his soul? And
- 4:47he also says in Matthew 16, do not lay up for
- 4:52yourself treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy
- 4:56and where thieves break in and steal. But
- 4:58lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where
- 5:01neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves
- 5:04do not break in and steal for where your treasure is.
- 5:08There your heart will be also.
- 5:12So I want to encourage you to
- 5:18go and remind myself to let go of the frivolous,
- 5:22the things in life that only bring short term
- 5:25satisfaction. Remember, our lives are fleeting. As
- 5:32we've seen, we're constantly reminded by these new news
- 5:38headlines that our life can be taken from us any time
- 5:42it is fleeting. It is but a vapor. So
- 5:47embrace the people that you love. Chase
- 5:52after the things in this life which will leave a
- 5:56good and long lasting legacy and lay up for
- 6:01yourself treasures in heaven. I'm
- 6:06Jay Fallon. Thanks for listening to The
- 6:09Slippery Slope.
