- 0:49Today we are back for the last time in the Book of the Azorian
- 0:52Folklore written down by Elsie Spicer Eels.
- 0:56In the first story, we find out the devil can't give you
- 0:59everything. In the second, we learn about
- 1:03how the church can keep you dry. In the third story, we get some
- 1:07terrible advice straight out of my grandmother's generation.
- 1:12And in the final story of this book, we learn why it's
- 1:15important not to leave death on Red.
- 1:18OK, let's begin. The friend of the Devil A story
- 1:26of the islands in the Bay of Angra.
- 1:30Once Upon a time there was a handsome Flemish youth who came
- 1:33to the island of Fayal. His name was Fernow Dehutra.
- 1:40He fell in love with a beautiful nun in the convent of Gloria and
- 1:43the city of Horta. One day the devil appeared to
- 1:48him. Since you fell in love with this
- 1:51fair nun, I see you are a friend of mine, said the devil.
- 1:57The young man had not known this, but he replied, Say rather
- 2:01that I will be your friend if you help me get possession of
- 2:04this nun I love. Very well, said the devil.
- 2:08But you will have to make a bargain with me.
- 2:12What is it asked for? Now?
- 2:13Rather anxiously give me your solemn pledge that you'll give
- 2:18me all of your children, Responded the devil agreed, Said
- 2:24Fernand. After that he saw the devil
- 2:27often. The nun, however, was as devout
- 2:31as she was beautiful. She refused to break the vows
- 2:35she had made and run away with the Flemish youth.
- 2:38She firmly resisted both him and the devil.
- 2:43You are not a true friend of me after all, said for now to the
- 2:46devil sadly. But you are my friend, said the
- 2:50devil in reply soon after. For now Dehutra left the city of
- 2:55Horta and the island of Fayal and went to join his kinsman who
- 2:59had settled in Angra in the island of Tertiera.
- 3:04Here his handsome face won many friends for him among the youth
- 3:07of the city. To some of these he confided the
- 3:10story of the relations with the devil.
- 3:14Now it happened that in the year 1666 the first bull fight was
- 3:18held in Angra. To this very day the island of
- 3:22Tricera is the only one in the Azores which has bull fights.
- 3:27For now took part in this. He was one of the chief
- 3:30organizers of the bull fight held on St.
- 3:32John's day of the following year.
- 3:36That day all the men and women and children of the city of
- 3:39Angra assembled in the public square before the Fort.
- 3:44The bull fighters, richly clad, rode forth upon prancing steeds,
- 3:49decked in costly velvets with streamers and ribbons of gold
- 3:52and silver, which sparkled in the bright sunlight.
- 3:57The youths were resplendent in their garments of Crimson
- 4:00velvet, richly embroidered, for now the hutra was radiant in his
- 4:05jacket of blue, decked with pearls, with a plumed hat.
- 4:08Upon his handsome head he carried a yellow banner
- 4:11embroidered with the arms of his family.
- 4:14Gay music sounded, the bulls were brought into the ring, the
- 4:18bull fighters saluted, and the fight began.
- 4:22In the windows of the castle the daughters of the chief
- 4:25magistrate of the city of Angra were seated among their friends.
- 4:30Their eldest daughter, Sophia, was the most beautiful maid of
- 4:34the whole city. The magistrate watched her
- 4:37anxiously as her fair cheek alternately paled and flushed as
- 4:41the struggle went on. There could be no doubt about
- 4:45the fact that there was love in her eyes as they rested upon the
- 4:49handsome young Flemish cavalier. For now the hutra she was
- 4:53wearing his colors, and in her hand she carefully held his
- 4:57bouquet of flowers. The ribbon which tied them
- 5:01secured also a piece of paper, upon which were written these
- 5:04words. O beautiful, made of my heart's
- 5:07desire. For your dear sake I go through
- 5:11fire. The magistrate withdrew from the
- 5:16gay scene into the silence of the Great Hall of the castle.
- 5:20He bowed his head upon his hands.
- 5:23This youth is a friend of the Devil.
- 5:24He groaned. I cannot consent to my
- 5:26daughter's marriage to him. He has promised to give all his
- 5:30children to the devil. They say I cannot allow my own
- 5:33grandchildren to be given to the devil.
- 5:36That very day he began a plot how to get rid of the handsome
- 5:39young For now. Now in the Bay before the city
- 5:44of Angra there are two rocky islands called today, just as
- 5:48they were back then, the Ilios de Cabras, the islands of goats.
- 5:55The brother-in-law of the magistrate was the owner of
- 5:57these barren islands. There were few goats there, a
- 6:00few Mulberry bushes and a tiny spring of fresh water.
- 6:05The magistrate called his brother-in-law to him as soon as
- 6:08the bull fight was over. He told him all his fears and
- 6:12asked him if he might use the islands as a place of banishment
- 6:15for the young Flemish cavalier who was the friend of the devil.
- 6:20You are quite welcome to use these islands for such a worthy
- 6:23purpose, replied his brother-in-law.
- 6:26Indeed, I have often thought that the deep cave on the island
- 6:30led to an inferno. It is the most fitting spot for
- 6:34the habitation of the Devil's friend.
- 6:38Thus it happened that the handsome young Flemish cavalier
- 6:40was seized and borne away to the barren, rocky islands in the Bay
- 6:44of Angra. When he was received there, a
- 6:48great earthquake shook the whole island of Terciera.
- 6:52When at last the people of the city of Angra were through
- 6:54contemplating all the destruction which had been
- 6:56wrought, somebody looked in the direction of the Island of the
- 7:00Goats. They saw that a great peace had
- 7:04broken away from one of the islands.
- 7:07Thus it was that the devil received his friend.
- 7:11The end. OK and story #2 The Miller's
- 7:42cloak, The story of a man who tried to stay home from church.
- 7:48Once there was a pious Miller. He was always found in the
- 7:51church praying. He prayed for the dead.
- 7:55He prayed for those who were alive.
- 7:57He prayed for all those who suffered, for the homeless ones,
- 8:00for the hungry ones. He prayed for those upon the sea
- 8:04and those upon the land. Now it happened that a terrible
- 8:09storm smote the island. The sea beat.
- 8:12High against the rocky coast, lightning flash, Thunder roared,
- 8:15the wind howled, the rain fell in Torrance as if it were a
- 8:19flood. Don't go out into the storm
- 8:22tonight, counseled his wife. It is not a suitable night for
- 8:26one to go to church. I agree with you, replied the
- 8:29Miller. I do not need to go to the
- 8:31church in this fierce storm. Surely my days and nights of
- 8:35praying have been so many that tonight I have earned a rest in
- 8:38my own dry house. The good God will pardon me.
- 8:43The Miller dropped his heavy brown cloak about him and lay
- 8:46down in his bed. The wind shrieked.
- 8:50Thunder shook the earth. Unseen hands pulled the Miller's
- 8:54cloak off his bed. The wind has blown out the
- 8:57candle light. Another cried the Miller to his
- 8:59wife. By the dim light of the candle,
- 9:02the good Miller again arranged his bed.
- 9:05He wrapped his heavy mantle about him and once more tried to
- 9:08sleep. Again his cloak was pulled off
- 9:10from his bed as if by unseen hands.
- 9:15There was no rest for the Miller that night.
- 9:18His cloak could not be made to cover him as he lay upon his
- 9:20bed. I might as well go to church and
- 9:25pray, he told his wife. I can't rest here.
- 9:29He wrapped himself in the brown cloak and went to the church
- 9:31through the fierce, blinding storm.
- 9:34He prayed for the dead. He prayed for those who were
- 9:37alive. He prayed for all those who
- 9:38suffered, for the homeless ones, the hungry ones.
- 9:41He prayed for those upon the sea and for those upon the land.
- 9:45Surely the prayers of the pious are needed to night, said the
- 9:48Miller to his wife. When he came out from the fierce
- 9:50storm, lightning flashed, Thunder roared, rain fell in
- 9:56torrents, the wind howled and drove the pouring rain against
- 10:00the windows. It blew in sheets through the
- 10:03door before the Miller had time to close it.
- 10:04Behind him the storm beat upon the thatched roof as if it would
- 10:09carry it away quick. Your cloak, cried the Miller's
- 10:14wife. Take it off so that I may drive
- 10:15by the fire. The good man started to obey.
- 10:20As he touched his cloak, however, his eyes open wide in
- 10:24amazement. It was entirely dry.
- 10:30Feel it yourself, he said to his wife.
- 10:32There's not a drop of rain upon it.
- 10:35The Miller's wife discovered that his words were true.
- 10:38It is a miracle of God, she cried as she crossed herself.
- 10:42The end. OK and story #3 The magic
- 11:13Mouthful, The story of a woman who quarreled.
- 11:17Once Upon a time there was a woman who lived a most unhappy
- 11:20life. She and her husband were always
- 11:23quarreling. Every day when he came home from
- 11:27work he was cross and he spoke harshly to her.
- 11:30She would respond with bitter words and things would go from
- 11:33bad to worse until at last they would fight.
- 11:37One day the woman took her water jar and went to the fountain to
- 11:40fill it. As usual.
- 11:42She was so unhappy the great tears were rolling down her
- 11:44cheeks. There was a little old woman
- 11:47standing by the fountain. What is the matter, my daughter?
- 11:51She asked as she saw the tears upon the poor woman's cheeks.
- 11:56When she had heard all the story, the little old woman took
- 11:58the water jar and filled it at the fountain.
- 12:02Go home, my daughter, she said. Keep this water in a jar.
- 12:07The moment your husband says a crossword to you, fill your
- 12:10mouth with the water. The sad woman thanked her and
- 12:14went to her own house. The next day when her husband
- 12:18came home, he began to scold her as usual.
- 12:22She was about to reply when she suddenly remembered the old
- 12:24woman's advice. She ran to the water jar and
- 12:27filled her mouth with water. To her great amazement, her
- 12:32husband soon stopped scolding. That night, for the first time
- 12:36in many weeks, they went to sleep without a fight.
- 12:40Things kept on going well for several days.
- 12:43Just as soon as her husband came home Cross and said unpleasant
- 12:45things, she would fill her mouth with water from the jar.
- 12:49Then he would get over being Cross.
- 12:52Now there were smiles instead of tears on the woman's face.
- 12:55At last, however, the water jar grew empty once more.
- 13:00The woman went up the fountain, hoping she would again find the
- 13:02little woman who had given her the magic water.
- 13:06She found her waiting at the fountain.
- 13:09How did my prescription succeed, dear daughter?
- 13:12She asked as soon as she saw her.
- 13:15How can I ever thank you for all you have done for me?
- 13:17Cried the woman. Now I am happy once more.
- 13:20My husband no longer fights me. I did not dream of my life could
- 13:24ever be so full of joy. Give me, I pray, some more of
- 13:27that magic water. The little old woman smiled
- 13:31gently. Dear daughter, she said, the
- 13:35water which I put in your jar is nothing but water from this
- 13:39fountain. It is the very same which you
- 13:42always carry home. This is the secret.
- 13:47When your mouth is full of water, you cannot reply.
- 13:50When your husband says crosswords to you, if you do not
- 13:53keep up the quarrel, it soon ends.
- 13:56That is why your life is happy now instead of sad.
- 14:00Go home and whenever your husband says an unkind word,
- 14:04pretend that your mouth is full of water and do not reply.
- 14:08Go in peace, my child. The woman always remembered this
- 14:11good advice and never again quarrelled with her husband.
- 14:15When she had children of her own, she passed on to them the
- 14:18secret. Now it is generally known in the
- 14:21Azores that if one does not want to keep up a quarrel, it is best
- 14:24to pretend that his mouth is full of water.
- 14:28This is the reason why the people of the islands are so
- 14:30peaceful and happy. The End.
- 15:01OK, And the final story, the messengers, the story of a youth
- 15:08who met death. Once Upon a time, on the island
- 15:13of Tersiara, there lived a youth whose name was Vladimiro.
- 15:17He had come from Flanders, a cavalier of the Order of St.
- 15:20John's. He was betrothed to the fair
- 15:23maiden on the island. One day he was hunting in the
- 15:28forest of Cedars when he suddenly saw Death standing
- 15:31before him. He fell upon his knees and sent
- 15:35up a fervent prayer to the Holy Virgin.
- 15:38Then he said to Death, Oh, Death, why is it that you have
- 15:42come in search of me so soon? I am young, rich and happy.
- 15:46I am betrothed to a maid who loves me.
- 15:48Life looks very bright and fair. Death step back apace.
- 15:55Your prayer to the Holy Mother has saved you.
- 15:58He said I had indeed come in search of you.
- 16:03You were about to die from an accident with your hunting arms.
- 16:07See, I've already retreated apace.
- 16:11I've decided not to take you with me this time.
- 16:16Let Amira return the prayer of Thanksgiving.
- 16:19Then he said, Oh, death, I'm going to make a request of you.
- 16:24Please do not come up to me so suddenly again.
- 16:28It gives me a fright. Next time you come for me, will
- 16:32you please be so kind as to send messengers in advance to give me
- 16:35a little warning? Yes, young Cavalier, responded
- 16:42Death, I will gladly do what you ask.
- 16:47I give you my promise that the next time I will send my
- 16:50messengers ahead of me to warn you that I am approaching.
- 16:57With these words, Death withdrew and went on alone through the
- 17:00forest of Cedars. The spring of that very year,
- 17:05the young Cavalier married the fair maid who loved him.
- 17:09Life was full of joy. Many children were born to the
- 17:13worthy couple. Riches and honors came too.
- 17:16The years speed by as if they flew on wings.
- 17:20At last 1/2 century had passed. Vladimiro held his grandchildren
- 17:25upon his knees and told them the story of the day he met Death in
- 17:28the forest of Cedars. We are glad that Death passed on
- 17:32and left you, said the children. If he hadn't, we couldn't have
- 17:36had you for our grandfather, said the namesake grandson of
- 17:39Vladimiro, snuggling closer in his arms.
- 17:43You do not have to fear death now, grandfather, do you?
- 17:46Asked little Maria. He will keep his promise and
- 17:49send his messengers, don't you think so?
- 17:52Yes, Death is a good Christian and will keep his word, replied
- 17:55the aged cavalier. The next morning he set sail for
- 18:00the island of Phial, where there were other grandchildren to
- 18:03visit in the home of his married daughter Francesca.
- 18:07On the voyage A fierce storm arose.
- 18:10The small boat was buffeted about by the gales.
- 18:14Suddenly Vladimira was startled to see Death standing beside
- 18:18him, just as in the forest years ago, when he had been young.
- 18:23Why have you come today? He cried an alarm.
- 18:27Why is it that you have not kept your word?
- 18:30You gave me your promises that you would send your messengers
- 18:33next time you came to warn me of your approach.
- 18:37I have kept my word, said Death. I have sent my messengers.
- 18:44Where are they? Asked the old man in amazement.
- 18:48Death pointed to Vladimiro's snowy hair.
- 18:53I've sent my messengers in your white locks, your failing
- 18:56eyesight and hearing the wrinkles on your cheeks.
- 19:01Can it be that you have failed to recognize them?
- 19:06Vladimiro bowed his head in silence and without a murmur
- 19:08went with Death and Truth. Death had been a good Christian,
- 19:14and then kept his word. The end.
- 19:44I really like that first one, the dude tried to get the devil
- 19:46on his side but everyone else is like eh no thank you devil
- 19:49friend. And the second story was nice.
- 19:53I thought that the Miller had earned staying at home in the
- 19:55bad storm but the dry cloak at the end was a good ending.
- 20:00I didn't like the third story as it was the husband always coming
- 20:03home and starting things. This one has the flavour of
- 20:07don't talk back and you won't get beat, you just.
- 20:11You and the final story was a good look at death.
- 20:15As my own parents get older I can see little parts of them
- 20:17aging and it breaks my heart. Please love on your family and
- 20:21friends as we don't always know when death will come and that is
- 20:25the end of this book. I will look for a new book to
- 20:27fill this space. Please write a comment below if
- 20:30you have a country's folklore that you want me to cover.
- 20:33And the podcast shout out is to talk to me in Korean podcast.
- 20:38If you, like me, are learning Korean, then this is an awesome
- 20:42podcast for you. They have good short.
- 20:45Episodes so that you don't get overwhelmed also.
- 20:48They have a list of vocab. Covered in each episode and if
- 20:51you like learning Korean like I do, go and give them a like a
- 20:55rating and a review. And the listener shout out is to
- 21:00Sana, Yemen, first mentioned in the 5th century.
- 21:03The city's name comes from the Sabian language, meaning
- 21:06something like fortified. The country's capital moved to
- 21:09Aden during the civil war, but Sana is still considered the du
- 21:11jour capital with over 3 million people there.
- 21:16I had the. Pleasure of eating some really
- 21:17good Yemeni food in Jeju in Korea, where there's some Yemeni
- 21:21refugees from the civil war and I hope to visit there someday
- 21:24when the fighting goes down. My friend's younger brother
- 21:27Devin got to visit there and. It looks beautiful.
- 21:31And so I say to my listener in Sana.
- 21:34Aleph Shukran What this? Thank you.
- 21:38And good night.
